FROM THE SATSANGS OF SAIBANISA JI Patience : Follow the path of Shri Sai Fear is one of the qualities that could drive a person to the level of insanity. Fear manifests in different ways and forms and may lead to other traits such as anger, greed, lust, envy, etc.. Fear of the unknown is the biggest cause of misery. Fear can be fought with Faith and Patience. With Faith all that will happen will be for ones own good and patience and that it will happen when the time comes for the event to happen, will go a long way to lessen the agony and pain that one harbors in their lives. Patience is merely not just waiting but also actively believing that God is with them and will help them against all odds. Keeping faith alive against all odds in prayer and experiencing all difficulties that may come is Patience. So there is no point in arguing why difficulties or unhappiness comes, it is a fact of life as any other fact. Dealing with it in the way prescribed by Sri Sai is the key to burden and live it when sorrow knocks on the door. How hard it is to be patient... Sometimes we are impatient for something to end, and sometimes for something to begin. But always, impatience denotes a lack of acceptance of what is "the now". We are impatient for tomorrow to come, we are impatient for the weekend, we are impatient for a promotion, for a raise, for a new job, for our date to arrive, for our date to leave... It seems that there are always reasons to be impatient... Yet, if we look at the reasons for our impatience, they always show dissatisfaction with the present. We want something other than that we have now. While that is good to have a vision of a better life for ourselves -- but to do so at the "cost" of not living and loving the life we now have is a great loss. We ignore our "now" because we have a vision of how things could or "should" be in future.
On this Thursday let us extend our patience more towards Shri Sai and grow positively.

SAI’S NEWS FROM TIME MACHINE Baba always has faith on his devotees. He constantly makes sure that "Its not people who comes to see Him and follow Him by being a devotee, Its Him who choose good souls and pulls them like a sparrow tied to thread. ~ Sai Satcharita
November 2,1909: Hari Sitaram alias Kakasaheb Dixit (45 years), a prominent solicitor and M.L.C. first arrived at Shirdi. Baba used to call him affectionately Langda Kaka and removed fear complex from his mind. Kaka Dixit was known for his obedience and faith to Baba's orders.
NAVAVIDHA BHAKTI (Source: Sai Leela Magazine July-Aug 2004)
Eighth Step – Sakhya Bhakti Tatya Ganpat Patil Kote Tatya addressed Baba as ‗Mama‘ (mother‘s brother or maternal uncle). Such was their reciprocal love and affinity. It was beyond compare. Though Baba was ready, until Tatya arrived He would remain seated in His own place, waiting for Tatya‘s arrival. Until Tatya Patil made Baba stand up, putting his hand under Baba‘s arm, then only Baba made ready to go to the Chavadi from there. When Tatyaba took Baba‘s permission to leave for his home, after offering chillum, attar and rose water, Baba used to say. ―Take care of Me.‖ ―Go if you are going. But, during the night from time to time, inquire about Me.‘‘ Saying, ―very well‖, Tatyaji would leave the Chavadi and go home. People say that Baba averted Tatya‘s death by giving His own life. He alone knows the truth. Lakshmibai Shinde The same Lakshmi, with great love, daily sent vegetables and bhakaris for Baba, at the right time. How can this service be adequately praised ! If there was a delay in getting the bhakar from Lakshmi, though it was past meal time, He would not put a morsel in the mouth. The food served in the plates would get cold. He would wait though hungry; but till Lakshmi‘s bhakar came, he would not eat any food. From that time onwards, according to the advice, started Lakshmi‘s bhakari, crushed into milk and offered with love daily. Later Baba began to eat that bhakar offered with love and devotion, daily. When there was a delay, He was uneasy and He did not feel like eating. Will be continued…

SHRI SAI NATH STAVAN MANJARI (A Humble Tribute of praise by Dasganu Maharaj)
(Translated from the marathi by Smt.Zarine Taraporevala and edited by Dr. Smt.Indira Kher, Ex.Executive Editor, Shri Sai Leela Magazine)
A HUMBLE TRIBUTE OF PRAISE TO SHRI SAINATH To spring up and to dry up and disappear, This is not the nature of water: Because the water of the spring Has no importance for the hallow it fills.
....22
It is only the hallow that is mistakenly proud Of itself, rather than the water that filled it. Therefore, when the water dries up The hollow becomes impoverished.
....23
The human body is really like the hallow water bed; The spirit (pure energy) is like the pure clean water of the spring; Although there are innumerable such hallows The essence is the same in everyone. ....24 Therefore, you, who are without a beginning, I say to you, merciful one, To destroy the mountain of ignorance Please become the thunderbolt of Indra
....25
Until now, such hollows (beings) Have existed in large numbers, on this earth. Many more exist even now, And, in the future, as the goes by, many more will come
...26
Each such hollow (being) Is given a separate and different name and appearance; That is how in this world, They are identified.
...27
Therefore, to distinguish that spirit In terms of "you and me" is not proper; Because. as there is no duality That itself is most surely, the Spirit

DEVOTEES CORNER DEVOTEES EXPERIENCE Dear Sai Devotees, When we see Baba holding on to his Bhaktas standing straight on his way to the chavadi - in the black and white photo where Mahalspathi is holding the umbrella. It seems that he is old, tired, and holding on to his devotees for support. But the truth is that the three Bhaktas in the photo are the ones who need Sai's support. He who supports the entire' worlds weight in himself appears so weak but it is from him that we all derive our strength. So am I a devotee like that. I derive my everyday energy to live, my hope, my light's light from my dear God, Sai. I had been his devotee right from my childhood. Bad times fell on me after I fell into wrong ways during my Teenage. For few years, I had lost touch with him...those were the worst years of my life. I had undergone a lot of torture at the hands of my in-laws. At a point of time, I had even decided to end my life. But then came Sai. My in-laws tease Him and don't believe in his Worship, but today, within 6 months, beginning from the day when I went to a Sai temple with my parents in South India (after 3 long years), because I cant go to Shirdi, I finally got peace of mind. My hubby's mind changed. We shifted out to our own home, which is rented and I believe that though I do not have a job nor is my husband in a stable financial position, we are able to pull on the expenses as Sai is taking care of it. I hope Sai will take care of my family and me forever. Today when I close my eyes, I see a bright light in front. I practice meditation on Sai, and he is such a tremendous source of energy, within minutes I lose sense of my body and join the light, which is nothing but pure happi-

ness. I didn't need any Tapas, just deep concentration and Sai Naam Jaap pulls me to reach the Trance state. Try it dear friends and it is so wonderful, you will not feel to come back to this real world. I do have to because I have small kids and have to finish my role of a mother and wife and daughter, until I get free from all bondage to be His only at the end of this worldly life. Although I cannot express what these words mean, I have experienced seeing him in his formless light. And truly, he is equal to the light and energy of (Anantha Koti) multi crores of Suns which is the soul (Brahma) of all souls of the entire world which purely is The Truth, The Knowledge and Unending Happiness (Sat- Chit - Anandam). I have only had a minute glimpse of the energy, and I am so affected I cannot imagine the state of those who have reached the state of Self - Realization! Blessed indeed are they! ARTICLES FROM DEVOTEES BABA'S MIRACLE - 12 ~ (A RECORD OF THRILLING EXPERIENCES OF (LATE) DR.P.S.RAMASWAMI ~ (AN ARDENT DEVOTEE OF SHRI SHIRDI SAI BABA)
A Breath can make them, as a breath has made — Goldsmith
If one sees me and me alone and listens to my Leelas and is devoted to me alone, he will reach God. ~ Baba
THE
How my tense confession and readiness to take the whole blame upon me for the technical blunder jointly committed by my boss Lt.Cdr.Todd and myself won for me the spontaneous approbation of Cdr Rao has been narrated in a previous article. More pleasant surprises yet were to follow. After the visitor had left, my boss called me and said with feeling that I need not have taken the full brunt upon me. I replied that it would be less than honest if I had not. However, the reason for calling me was different. It was to tell me that Cdr. MRA Rao, (who had visited us) was greatly impressed with me and would like to take me on this staff on promotion., if I could be spared. He was however, informed that this matter should be put up to me since nothing could be anticipated about my action. The fact was I had willy-nilly established a reputation for having my own way by first refusing to be deputed to the U.K. and later turning down an offer of promotion elsewhere. Before long, the Cdr. paid an unscheduled visit to our unit and was to leave the next day. no reference was made to my intended promotion. At about seven next morning as I was scurrying to get ready, there was a knock, Imagine my surprise and embarrassment for being disheveled when contrary to all expectations, I found the Cdr. In full Navy-blue uniform with golden strips denoting his rank on the shoulders and around the sleeves standing full six feet murmuring an apology. Welcoming him in, I hurriedly dressed myself and came with coffee for both. It was December,1956. We were standing in the front room before Baba's portrait in standing posture with the 'biksha-patra' (in which pose he appeared to revive my dead son and accept 'biksha') Broaching the subject in a gingerly manner, he said he had not actually planned the visit but came on an impulse to talk in private on a personal matter concerning me in which he too was interested. Incidentally, he wondered how I managed to carry on without a scooter. If I liked, he would see I got one allotted from the defense quota on priority basis and sanction the necessary loan for it too, a coveted possession in the '50s. I realized how when Baba wants to give, He does so with many hands from many unknown channels. At the same time there rang a bell in my mind reminding me this could be Baba's subtle method of testing me. Also, I am by nature averse to sudden luck out of tune with my standards. I just thanked him and said I was born to be a plebeian and pedestrian. Reverting to the purpose of his visit, he said it was to know my reaction to his proposal to take me on his staff on promotion in the Senior inspectorate of Naval Armaments, Cossipore, Calcutta. I was overwhelmed by the gesture and the realization that Baba was behind it all. It was extraordinary that a high ranking officer elects to go and see quite a junior member of the service to ascertain his action about something of positive benefit to the latter. It would be too good to be true, were it not for Baba again and again making the incredible come to pass. It is these thoughts that overwhelmed me and tears began running down my cheeks. Of course, I must confess that my attitude to life is feminine besides.

The officer was taken aback. "I am sorry if I have hurt your feelings, Mr. Ramaswami", he said with obvious concern, adding "don't you want promotion?" "No sir, you have not hurt me. I am overwhelmed by your gesture and the infinite mercy of Baba," I replied "As regards my wanting promotion or anything else for that matter, I really don't know what I want. It is up to Baba to give me what he deems fit. Hence, I would rather don't like you to go out of the way to-do me a good turn. I don't wish to be the cause of some one else thus losing his change either." Baba generally enables me to decide on intuition in such circumstances. I also felt that Calcutta was not for me, promotion or no promotion. "It would not be like that," he rejoined. "The reason why I wish to have your consent in advance is to enable me to fix up a bungalow for you. You know how difficult it's to get a good accommodation." "I beg of you to leave things as they are," I said. The reason is my conviction born of firm faith in Baba and sustained by continuous experience that he is ever watchful of my needs and know WHEN as well as WHAT to give. What is due to me, no power on earth can hold back. All I need to have is patience. I am quite content to remain where and what I am according to His will". It was the officer's turn now to be overwhelmed. Taking my hands in his and speaking with feeling and a new born conviction, as it were, he said, "I think you are right. Let us leave it to your Baba to decide. I thought I had known you for what you are. But I now see I was wrong. I am just beginning to know you. I only wish I had your attitude to life. You don't know how miserable I am, Mr. Ramaswami", and stopped, overcome with emotion. Forgetting the wide gulf separating our ranks not only officially but socially too, (for I had come to know he was a scion of Serboji Maharajah of Thanjavur) I hugged him, throwing discretion to the winds and drawn to him by sheer brotherly love and sympathy. He had wealth, rank and position and yet happiness eluded him. I had heard he was involved in legal proceedings for separation from his English wife whom he had married in England nor was he left at peace in the service by jealous superiors determined to score him off. Such is life that we have to learn to be happy by counting our own blessings vouchsafed to us by Baba. My heart went out to him and I made bold to say, "Sir, I feel that from today Baba has come into your life. Please, do learn to have faith in Him and let Him take over your burdens. All will be well". Being much older, I blessed him heartily. He thanked me with feeling and rather startled me by saying he would soon be leaving the Navy and that was the reason why he wanted to ensure my promotion in good time. However, he had no qualms about it now, with Baba to look after me. As for me I was least concerned about it. My heart sang Baba's praise for bringing me close to a person worth his weight in gold. Before taking leave, he very considerately added, "I shall be in touch with you. My help will always be available for finding a good berth for you if your service is not extended. Don's hesitate to write to me". As is to be expected with Baba, He saw to it that Cdr Rao became a happy man. He found connubial bliss afresh, with a Maharashtra lady and was picked by the Oerlikons, a Swedish firm, as their Technical advisor on a five figure salary at Delhi. Promotion came seeking me unasked and in the same manner my service was spontaneously extended for five years. All I did was "to work and to wait", not caring for the morrow, " heart within and God over head."

Story for this Week: ― Stories of Shiva‖ Om Namah Shivaya Ganga Comes Down to Earth: A legend from the Ramayana speaks of King Bhagirath who once meditated before Lord Brahma for a thousand years for the salvation of the souls of his ancestors. Pleased with his devotion Brahma granted him a wish. He requested the Lord to send the river Ganges down to earth from heaven so that she could flow over his ancestors' ashes and wash their curse away and allow them to go to heaven. Brahma granted his wish but asked him to pray to Shiva, for he alone could support the weight of her descent. Accordingly he prayed to Shiva and he allowed the Ganges to descend on his head, and after meandering through his thick matted locks, the holy river reached the earth. This story is re-enacted by bathing the 'linga'.
The hunter and the Bilva tree The Shiva Purana also relates the following story or myth. Once there was a cruel-hearted hunter by the name of Gurudruh who lived in the lonely forest. On the auspicious day of Maha Shivaratri he had to go out hunting because his family had nothing to eat. Maha Shivaratri (the great night of Shiva) is the most sacred time for fasts, prayers and offerings, when even the most involuntary acts, if pleasing to Lord Shiva, are made holy. By sunset Gurudruh had not been successful in the hunt. Coming to a lake, he climbed a tree and waited for some unsuspecting animal to come and drink. He did not notice that the tree he had climbed was the Bilva tree. Neither did he notice the shivalingam beneath it, nor the water pot hanging in the branch just above it. After some time a gentle deer came to quench her thirst, and Gurudruh prepared to shoot. As he drew his bow, he accidentally knocked the water pot hanging in the tree and some water fell down on the shivalingam beneath, along with a few Bilva leaves. Thus, unknowingly and unwittingly, Gurudruh had worshipped Shiva in the first quarter of the night. As a result his heart was a little purified by this act performed on such an auspicious night. Meanwhile the deer, startled by the movement in the tree, looked up and saw the hunter about to release his arrow. ―Please do not kill me just yet,‖ pleaded the deer. ―I must first take care of my children, and then I will return to be food for your family.‖ The hunter, whose heart had been softened a little by the accidental worship, on noticing the beauty of the deer, let her go on condition that she would return on the morrow to give her body as food for his family. Later that same night, the sister of the deer came looking for her. Once more the hunter took aim and THE

once more, without his being aware, the water and the Bilva leaves fell down upon the shivalingam. Again, unknowingly, the hunter had worshipped Shiva in the second quarter of the night. The effect of this was that Gurudruh‘s heart was further purified. His pranas softened a little more, and he allowed this animal to also go and tend to its young, provided it returned the next day to provide him and his family with food. In the third quarter of the night, the mate of the first deer came in search of her, and again the strange worship took place as the hunter took aim for the third time. But the hunter‘s heart was beginning to melt due to the worship, and he let the deer‘s mate go also for the same reason and under the same conditions. Later when the three deer met together, they discussed who should go and offer themselves for the hunter‘s food. Even the children offered to give their lives. Finally the whole family decided to surrender to the hunter together, for none of them could bear to live without the others. Thus they set off towards the lake with heavy hearts. When they arrived at the Bilva tree, Gurudruh was very pleased and relieved to see them, and he immediately prepared for the kill. He took aim for the fourth time, but in the same accidental manner as before, worship in the fourth quarter of the night took place unknown to him. This final action of Gurudruh brought about a complete change of heart and, as he was about to release the first arrow, his heart overflowed with pity for the innocent deer. Tears filled his eyes at the thought of all the animals he had killed in the past, and slowly he lowered his bow. Greatly moved by the selfless action of these animals, he felt ashamed and allowed the whole family of deer to leave unharmed. Such is the purity and spiritual power of the Bilva tree that, even without his knowledge or conscious effort, the cruel-hearted hunter had been transformed into a man of compassion and understanding, and was delivered from his past bad karma by the grace of Shiva and the Bilva tree.

Hemadpant's Shimga Dinner Now let us take another story which shows how Baba appeared in the form of His picture and fulfilled the desire of His devotee. I get angry with none. Will a mother get angry with her children? Will the ocean send back the waters to the several rivers? ~ Baba
In 1917 on the full-moon morning, Hemadpant had a vision. Baba appeared to him in his dream in the form of a well-dressed Sanyasi, woke him up, and said that He would come to him for meals that day. This awakening constituted a part of the dream. When he fully awoke, he saw no Sai nor any Sanyasi. But when he began to recollect the dream, he remembered each and every word the Sanyasi uttered in his dream. Though he was in contact with Baba for seven years and though he always meditated on Baba, he never expected that Baba would come to his house for meals. However, being much pleased with Baba's words, he went to his wife and informed her that being the Holiday, a Sanyasi guest was coming for meals and that some more rice should be prepared. She enquired about the guest, who he was and whence he was coming. Then not to lead her astray and not to cause any misunderstanding he gave her the truth, i.e., told her about the dream. She doubtingly asked whether it was possible that Baba should come there (Bandra) from Shirdi, leaving the dainty dishes there for accepting their coarse food. Hemadpant then assured her that Baba might not come in person but He might attend in the form of a guest and that they would lose nothing if they cooked some more rice. Sai Ram. Again, the intellect works well due to the grace of Guru. But the same may not be sustained unless He wills it and bestows His grace! Sai Ram. Will be continued‌.

Quintessence from Shri Sai Baba’s Philosophy (By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao) ~ Contribution by "Shashank"crazydiode@gmail.com, Mrs and Mr Anand
Chapter 35: The Wheel of Time and the Pangs of sorrow and Death Continued from last issue... Time is the interval between the observer and the observed. That is, the observer, will be afraid to meet the thing called death. We don‘t know what it means. We have all kinds of hope and theories about it; we believe in rebirth or something, or in something called the Soul, the Atman, a spiritual entity which is timeless and which we call by different names. Now we have to find out for ourselves whether there is a soul? Or is it an idea that has been handed down to us? is there something permanent, continuous, which is beyond thought? If thought we think about it, it is within the field of thought and therefore it cannot be permanent within the field of thought. To discover that nothing is permanent is of tremendous importance. Then only is the mind free, then we can look, and in that there is great joy. We cannot be frightened of the unknown because we do not know what the unknown is and so there is nothing to be frightened of. Death is a word, and it is in this word, the image that creates fear. So we look at death without the image of death. As long as the image exists from which springs thought, it must always create fear. Then we both rationalize our fear of death and build a resistance against the inevitable or we invent innumerable beliefs to protect us from the fear of death. Hence there is a gap between us and the thing of which we are afraid of. In this time space interval there must be conflict which is fear, anxiety and self-pity. Thought, which breeds the fear of death says ‗Let us postpone it, let us avoid it, keep it as far as possible, let us not think about it‘ – but we are thinking about it. When we say, ‗I wont think about it‘ – we have already thought out how to avoid it. We are frightened about death because we have postponed it. We have separated living from dying and the interval between the living and dying is fear. That interval, that time, is created by fear. Living is our daily torture, daily insult, sorrow and confusion, with occasional opening of a window over enchanted seas. That is what we call living, and we are afraid to die, which is an end to this misery. We would rather cling to the known than face the unknown – the known being our house, our furniture, our family, our character, our business, our knowledge, our fame, our loneliness, our Gods – that little thing that moves around incessantly within itself with its own limited pattern of embittered existence. We think that living is always in the present and that dying is something that awaits us in the distance future. But we have never questioned whether this battle of everyday life is living at all. We want to know the truth about rebirth. We want proof of the survival of the Soul, we listen to the assertion of clairvoyants and the conclusion of physical research, but we never ask, never, how to live – to live with delight, with enchantment, with beauty everyday. We have accepted life as it is with all its agony and despair and got used to it, and think of death as something to be carefully avoided. But death is extraordinarily like life when we know how to live. We cannot live without dying. We cannot live if we don‘t

die psychologically every minute. This is not an intellectual paradox. To live completely, wholly, every day as if it were a new loveliness, there must be dying to everything of yesterday, otherwise we live mechanically, and a mechanical mind can never know what love is or what freedom is. Most of us are frightened of dying because we do not know what it means to live. We don‘t know how to live; therefore we don‘t know how to die. As long as we are frightened of life we shall be frightened of death. The man who is frightened of life is not frightened of being completely insecure for he understands that inwardly, psychologically there is no security. When there is no security, there is an endless movement and then life and death are the same. The man who lives without conflict, who lives with beauty and love, is not frightened of death because to love is to die. If we die to everything, we know, including family, our memory, everything we have felt, then death is purification, a rejuvenating process; then death brings innocence and it is only the innocent who are passionate, not the people who believe or who want to find out what happens after death. To find out actually what takes place when we die we must die. We must die – not physically, but psychologically, inwardly, die to the things we have cherished and things we are bitter about. If we have died to one of our pleasures, the smallest or the greatest, naturally, without any enforcement or argument, then we will know what it means to die. To die is to have a mind that is completely empty of itself, empty of its daily longings, pleasures and agonies. Death is renewal, a mutation, in which thought does not function at all because thought is old. When there is death, there is something totally new. Freedom from the known is death, and then we are living. Speaking to the wife of one Kulkarni, who was on death bed, Sri Sai Baba said: ―Death and life are manifestations of God‘s activity and that cannot be separated. God permeates all. However, in fact, none is born nor dies. See with your inner eye. Then you realize that you are God and not different from God. When death arrives do not grieve. Then it gets back to the earth. Don‘t feel unhappy‖. In this way Baba consoled the wife of Kulkarni. When Damodar B. Rampoorkar, who had lost two children and had a son ailing at that time, approached Sai Bab, Baba consoled him by saying ―Why are you fearing? Those who are gone are gone. Be consoled with those who survive, fear not. Am I not near you? What then?‖. Will be continued….
