YOUR VISION, DELIVERED.
“Having been through the remodeling and construction project multiple times, we have never had an experience like the one we have with Constatine Builders. They were organized, reliable, on time and professional throughout. The communication was fantastic. They understood our goals and kept our best interests in mind. Including finding ways to help us save money with materials, permitting and design. The final results were outstanding. They truly are the best at what they do.” — BRANDON COOLEY

The Foundation
President’s Message
Dr. Princy Rekhi, Foundation Board President
Thank you for being part of your local Dental Community! It’s been many years since I served as President of SKCDS, so it
is quite an honor to be able to once again write an article for the quarterly, but this time as your Foundation President. I’ve been fortunate to have served in organized dentistry in many capacities from local to the National level with the ADA. The most rewarding is by far the local component (SKCDS) as you are in touch with your colleagues on a regular basis. Most of us in private practice or solo practice seldom have an opportunity to really communicate or share our thoughts or bounce ideas off one another. The Dental Society provides resources, meetings, CE, happy hours, volunteer opportunities and other social events to help create environments for just that. Thank you for being here, we are all a TEAM and together everyone achieves more. The Society and Foundation have had many exciting changes and advances over the past few months. We 4 l 2019 SKCDS WINTER QUARTERLY
are fortunate to have Cathy Dahlquist serve as our executive director for both the Society and Foundation creating a nice overlap of both entities. This year we also held a joint meeting of the boards of both the Society and Foundation in order to create a more synonymous relationship to ensure greater success and support for the efforts of both boards. After all, the Seattle King County Dental Foundation is the charitable arm of SKCDS, hence we are basically one and the same. The mission of the Foundation has been to work towards eliminating pain and infection in the residents of Seattle and King County. The Foundation holds one major event to raise funds to fulfill this mission, it’s annual gala which is coming up on March 8, 2019 at the Fairmont Hotel in Downtown Seattle. This event helps fund all the activities we support through either our members or alliances. The last few years, we have been able to secure donations for the Foundation to acquire a mobile dental van. With the help of Cathy, we’ve made great progress toward that goal. We’re currently working on a potential partnership with another local charity group who may be able to help us with our goal. More information will be forthcoming in the weeks and months ahead. Personally, I want to say THANK YOU to each of you who has supported us by either attending, donating, or volunteering at any of our Foundation events, we appreciate everything you do and hope to see you all on March 8!
Dr. Princy Rekhi
The
President’s Message
Dr. Kirk E. King
One of the things I am truly grateful to the Society for is meeting new friends over the years. It is so easy to sit in our offices and practice in a “silo” where we don’t interact with others very often. The Society and the various meetings and events have allowed me to make deep and long-lasting friendships with more than a few of my colleagues that I would not have met otherwise. I cherish these friendships and know that I can call on any of them for advice, support, or simply to grab dinner or see a show. While it may not seem like a “fun” idea to attend a dental meeting after a long day at work, it can be exciting to meet new friends and develop life-long friendships over a meal or a beverage. These are people that you may decide to travel with and explore the world, socialize with at holiday events, or family dinners. Why not attend a meeting and make some new lasting friendships this Spring and Summer!
Spring is nearly here, believe it or not. Spring is a time for renewal. We celebrate it in so many ways, Spring Cleaning, Spring Break, Spring Forward. It seems to propel us forward after the renewal of a New Year and launch us into Summer. We also appreciate your renewal of your membership. Being a member dentist of your Dental Society is more than just sending a check or charging your dues to your credit card. It represents an affiliation and bond with others in your profession, all working towards common goals of oral health, serving our patients, and life-time learning. Professionally, there are many ways to take part in this spirit of Here is to Spring and the many opportunities for renewal it renewal, we have many activities, courses, and opportunities to presents! connect with your peers and colleagues. You can also make new connections at dental society events or explore new concepts. I would encourage you to explore our website and this Quarterly to see what options there are for you to embrace Spring and further your professional career.
Dr. Kirk E. King
But there is so much more, let’s talk about the fun stuff.

The
Director’s Message
Can we dedicate ourselves fully to all of these focuses at the same time? Whether searching for wealth, relationships, freedom, or meaningful impact, it comes down to how we spend and value our time and resources. One of the many benefits of membership at SKCDS includes free membership meetings. Collegial friendships are created and sustained over dinner and learning. The educational component of the meeting is targeted toward what you value in your practice of dentistry. You probably want all the positive attributes listed above (wealth, friendship, freedom, meaning) in your life. SKCDS brings in speakers to help you focus on how to effectively manage your time and money and assist your efforts to reach these goals.
The Seattle-King County Foundation’s mission is to eliminate dental pain and infection in King County. One way to help achieve this mission is by attending the 2019 Gala and Auction on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the luxurious Fairmont Olympic Hotel. You might have caught that I specifically stated that my husband bought the time share in Puerto Vallarta. Had I been with him on this visit there is no way we would own this little week of heaven. I would not have had the time or patience to visit the time share and listen to a sales pitch for half a day of our vacation in return for a free voucher. As a retired judge, he is patient and prioritizes time and people differently than I do. It is one of the things I admire most about him. Learning to value the important things is a tremendous gift.
How can we have it all? List your goals. Be creative. Rethink a situation. Educate yourself. Build friendships. Give freely. Follow your bliss. How are your utilizing your time and resources? By taking advantage of my time share in Mexico during the winter with friends and making plans to rent a vacation home during the summer in Montana is my solution toward finding freedom. And of course, I am excited to give to the greater good at the Foundation Gala on Friday, March 8th.

Structuring a Strong Team when Building a Practice By Big Sky Northwest
Building a practice is a pivotal point in every doctor’s career. Even the most prepared individuals should have a strong team around them while planning to bring their vision into reality. The components of that team; the General Contractor specializing in dentistry, the real estate Broker, the Designer, the Banker, the Equipment Representative, and the Technology specialist, all play important roles that complement each other and are crucial to the success of a project. Relying on the expertise of others in the earliest stages allows a doctor more time to focus on building a new business, while also helping that business flourish in the best foundation possible. Within the General Contractors scope is the largest fiscal portion of building a practice, which is why having a contractor that specializes in dental projects is so important. Producing a budget that is all inclusive requires knowledge of the very unique infrastructure demands of a dental practice. These details, such as water solenoid valves and purity inspections of medical gas lines, can affect the budget, but more practical problems can also arise in the layout of chairs, operatory lights and televisions, creating very low tolerances and requiring precise, experienced builders. Choosing a general contractor that understands what is required at the offset can also help foster trust, minimizing changes and challenges during the project.
Almost as important as trust within a contractorclient relationship is communication. A contractor that is willing to challenge outside forces in order to support their client throughout a project, and address issues that arise in a timely manner is essential to keeping a project on track. Coordination between the entities, within the team and outside of it, such as with the city and material suppliers, should be a regular activity of the contractor. As well as updating the team as to where the project is and where it is going. Construction is challenging, so having a team captain that is willing to take charge and lead a project in a positive direction is key to that project’s success. Knowing if an empty space has the infrastructure necessary for a dental practice can be difficult to ascertain, which is why having a knowledgeable Broker on your team from the onset is imperative. Figuring out what is critical to a client or practice as it pertains to the geographical, marketing, and other aspects, can screen out spaces, saving a significant amount of time. An experienced broker should also understand the need to negotiate with the landlord in order to get additional tenant improvement allowances and free rent periods.
Deciding on equipment may not be the first decision a doctor needs to make when building a practice but having an Equipment Representative’s support in the planning stages to identify the style of dentistry and the needs of the practice will help produce a budget that is accurate and still provides the necessities for the practice. Identifying things like left handedness and additional procedures performed can allow designers to more accurately plan the flow and allocate adequate space for the doctor’s specific style of dentistry. Many doctor’s do not choose their Technology Specialist in the beginning of a project, but their pre-planning can help define the system operations of the business. Systems vary greatly in their depth as well as cost, and a specialist can create a perfect custom set-up. They can also work with the equipment rep and general contractor in order to plan for the in-wall infotech infrastructure necessary for the practice.
At Big Sky Northwest we’ve built our team, network, and community on a strong foundation of trust, communication, and positive energy. If you’re interested in bringing that positive energy to your futureor existing practice, please contact us anytime Extracting design details from the mind of a client at 206-259-0936 or info@BigSkyNorthwest.com. is not the only role of a Designer in the early stages of a practice. A designer with dental knowledge will be able to deliver plans that are efficient in their design as well as follow legal requirements such as code compliance and patient privacy laws. Setting up the flow of an office during the design phase can also support physical operations once the practice is running. Understanding the fiscal parameters of where a project initiates is the basic role of the Banker in a dental project. A banker who also plays an active role not just at loan signing, but also during construction will help to protect the investment and keep the momentum of the project flowing forward. Finding the right type of loan program that is most suited to a Doctor now and into the practice’s growth projections, will benefit the practice well after construction is over.

Dental Student Feature: Ryan Tam Ryan Tam graduated from UW in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology. He is currently a student at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and expected to graduate June 2020. Ryan has been an active ASDA leader in both local and district chapters this past year. He hopes to participate in more dental outreach and volunteering events in 2019. • What year are you in dental school? • Third year dental student • What made you decide to study dentistry? • I thought dentistry was the perfect combination of art, business and science - three different majors that I was considering during undergrad. The type of thinking that being a successful dentist requires provides a career where my brain to be stimulated in a variety of different ways. • Are you studying to practice general dentistry or a specialty? And why? • I have a strong interest in pursuing prosthodontics whether it be in residency or a GPR. As a general dentist we are trained to focus on a singular problem or chief complaint that the patient presents with. I find pride and accomplishment in being able to analyze, anticipate and prevent future problems for my patients. I will also apply for associate positions and ultimately choose what will offer me the best mentorship. • Where would you like to practice when you graduate? • I would be looking for opportunities on the Eastside (Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah) or on the Southside (Beacon Hill, Kent, Burien, Puyallup). I want to be placed in an area where I have the most impact. I am bilingual in English and Cantonese and I hope to be able to support the dental needs of individuals in the Chinese community. • What made you decide to become an ASDA member? • My first year at Dental Action Day showed me the effectiveness of organized dentistry. This most recent DAD our group received compliments from legislators on the Summary sheets (prepared excellently every year by WSDA) we left behind and how it helps them easily discuss it with other representatives to rally “Yes”s and “No”s for the specific bills we care about as dentists. This really highlights the power of organized dentistry. I saw ASDA as a great way to get involved and encourage more participation in organized dentistry. • What are some of your hobbies? • Video games, working out, snowboarding, golfing, Netflix. • What is an item on your bucket list? • Parachuting out of a plane • Favorite movie? • Monster’s Inc. I can quote the entire movie. • Favorite book? • I can’t remember the last time I read a book for non-academic reasons. I do remember absolutely loving the Sci-Fi Artemis Fowl book series. • What is your most treasured possession? • As of right now, probably my surgical loupes. While I can most certainly have a successful appointment with a patient without them, my back and neck will probably wish I had them on. • Somewhere you’d like to travel to? • I have been to Hong Kong multiple times in my life but hoping to soon explore Japan, Vietnam and Australia. • What is your proudest moment? • Proudest moment I had was during my prosthodontic rotation. It was the clinical try in appointment for a CD/CD patient. I walked away from my operatory to grab my attending. As I walked back to my station, I noticed my patient checking himself and his new smile out in the mirror
with the largest grin I have ever seen him make. 16 l 2019 SKCDS WINTER QUARTERLY

Change a Life through Donated Dental Services (DDS) Please join the 268 dentists and 126 laboratories who volunteer through the Dental Lifeline Network • Washington’s Donated Dental Services (DDS) program. The DDS program was established in partnership with the Seattle-King County Dental Society nearly 20 years ago. Through the program, volunteers provide comprehensive dental care to people with disabilities, are elderly, or medically fragile and don’t have the ability to pay for vital dental care. Volunteers help people like Jerry: Jerry was born and raised in Washington and is very close with his brother. Jerry proudly served as a combat medic in the US Army from 1964-67. In early 2018, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer that metastasized into his bones. Jerry is maintaining a positive attitude and is ready for this fight. In order for Jerry to commence cancer treatment his physician needed him to address issues with his oral health. Several of his teeth were broken and had become infected. While he has seen a dentist within the last few years – he was unable to afford the recommended dental treatment. Jerry survives on a small social security benefit that just covers his expenses. He has VA healthcare but that does not include dental benefits. It seemed he had nowhere to turn for help. Fortunately, Jerry was referred to the Donated Dental Services (DDS) program and he was linked with a team of volunteers, Oral Surgeon Dr. Dhaliwal Sukhdeep extracted 4 teeth, Dr. Duane Jones donated upper denture and lower partial denture and Nakanishi Dental Lab fabricated both dentures at no cost. Thanks to this team, Jerry’s dental health has been restored and he is one step closer to winning his cancer battle. Dentists, specialists, and labs are encouraged to register as a volunteer at WillYouSeeOne.org. After volunteers fill out a short form, the DDS coordinator screens patients to confirm eligibility, helps ensure that they show up to appointments and coordinates lab work and any needed specialty care. Since 2000, Washington DDS volunteer dentists and labs have provided more than $7.3 million in treatment to over 1,200 people. Washington DDS funders include Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, which has awarded a $125,000 grant to DLN that will address a long list of cases and treat more Washingtonians over two years. DLN needs more Washington dentists and laboratories to volunteer to make a difference in someone’s life. Please contact the DDS coordinator at 866.214.5066 or visit WillYouSeeOne.org.

The Society for New Dentists:

I just got my bill for the “3rd Year Out” dues and it was a very difficult $714 to spend. (Did you know you can make monthly payments instead? $66 per month may be easier for those like me who hate dropping hundreds of dollars in a single transaction.)
