Two great programs, one great brochure!
Dear Friends,
What a fabulous summer we have in store for your children! The options almost seem limitless through the many weeks of fun, friends, and summer activities we have to offer! This summer we are happy to present you with two distinct and wonderful summer camp programs. Contained together on one campus for your convenience, summer programming has never been so easy to manage. MJCC Day Camp, one of the oldest day camp traditions in Portland, continues to provide the best in all Day Camps with fun for all ages including archery, swimming, soccer, arts, movie making and more. Designed with the needs of our parents and the desires of their children in mind, the MJCC Day Camp keeps campers coming back for more fun year after year. Each summer new surprises await and your children know they’ll be having a total blast! Dedicated summer Day Camp staff members provide the endless fun and familiarity that campers (and their parents) cherish. PJA Summer Discovery embarks on its fifth year this summer! This milestone is possible because of PJA’s talented and experienced teachers and staff. They are at the heart of the program creating their classes based on topics they are passionate about. Summer Discovery instructors strive to provide quality enrichment programming that is fun and challenging, with the goal to provide “new learning” for students. Above all else, our teachers care about the children they teach and the students can tell! This summer, we look forward to providing your children with memorable experiences. Whether they find “new learning” and meaningful project work in our Summer Discovery program, or action, adventure and great friendships in our MJCC Day Camps, we know they’ll have a summer filled with joyous fun. See you on campus this summer! Kind regards,
Anthony Markey Celinda Llanez MJCC Day Camp Manager PJA Summer Discovery Director amarkey@oregonjcc.org cllanez@pjaproud.org 503.452.3436 503.244.0126

Our school nurtures and inspires positive Jewish engagement, respect for human and religious differences, and responsibility for the world in which we live. To ensure an academically excellent environment: • Our dedicated and creative faculty members teach through hands-on experiences, to develop critical thinking skills and encourage problem solving. • Students receive personalized attention so they can reach their full potential in the classroom. • Our enhanced curriculum exceeds state guidelines. Math, science, language, and literature are only the beginning. They are complemented by art, culture, community service and much more. It takes a great staff to make a great camp. We carefully screen and interview candidates to ensure that we hire staff who are committed, hardworking, enthusiastic role models for kids. All of our staff undergo a criminal background check and are certified in First Aid and CPR. All camp staff participate in our intensive multi-day staff training. Many of our camp staff return to us year after year. Bios of our staff can be found online on our website.

Swimming
loat! Fun F JCC! r u o Enjoy d at the M foun Only
Our swimming program, led by MJCC Aquatics Manager Anthony Markey, is one of the great benefits of MJCC Day Camp! We have an outstanding aquatic facility that allows kids to enjoy the water safely under the close supervision of certified lifeguards. Water safety and teaching kids to swim are of utmost importance to our program. Classic Camp • Instructional swim will teach basic swimming skills, water safety and life-saving skills. Instructional Swim • Progressive curriculum will encourage campers to swim stronger and with more confidence. for Simcha & Kehila (To encourage participation, we will not offer an alternative activity during instructional swim time.)
10
Open Swim!
• 100% camper participation is encouraged but not required. • Alternative activity offered but please pack a swim suit daily. • Pool will be divided by skill level to ensure safety.
Swim Assessments (Required for all campers)
• Want to get your child’s swim placement done before camp starts? Come to the MJCC any Monday or Tuesday between 3:30 - 6:00 pm from March to June to get assessed. • Every Monday of camp we will offer swim assessments for those who haven’t previously received placement in our swim program. • Campers who are able to tread water for 30 seconds and swim at least 40 feet on their own will not be required to wear floatation belts. Lifejackets and floatation belts will be available for all swimmers. How many sunshines have you found so far?
Our Camps Classic Camp
At Classic Camp, campers will do a variety of activities that may include sports, swimming, cooking, dance, drama, nature/ outdoor adventure and arts & crafts. Campers participate in activities throughout the day with the same counselors because consistency is important in making sure our campers feel safe and comfortable. Each themed week we go outside for our activities as often as possible, but have the opportunity to go indoors when the weather is too hot or too cold. We encourage campers to explore, discover and learn about the world around them. Simcha and Kehila campers will get the opportunity to progress through our instructional swim program twice a week. Ruach campers will go on a weekly field trip. All Classic campers swim, participate in a daily camp gathering for song circle, and finish the week with a Shabbat celebration.
Specialty Camps
Specialty Camps focus on a particular subject and run 9 am - 1 pm. This allows kids to delve deeper into a specific activity. Come try a new hobby or sport or fine tune your skills at an MJCC Specialty Camp. See pages 12-13 for specific Specialty Camp descriptions. Campers participating in Specialty Camps do not participate in the Classic Camp swim lessons offered in the morning.
