President’s Message As winter hit with a fury, the dental world never lost the heat and enveloped us in a cloak of continued achievement and unrelenting energy.

These past few months were anything but a period of hibernation; instead, we kept up the pace with a strong sense of fervor and a steady focus on our goals.

A constant theme of my addresses towards the membership has been the push for increased engagement in the work of the Society but also as individuals in our communities. For those who heeded my advice and have become engaged, active and vocal over issues that concern our profession, I would like to graciously thank you for your involvement and persistent participation. Your support and voice in our profession is no longer an option but a necessity. It is due time that fighting for our rights and standing up for our beliefs become not just a fleeting thought but our modus operandi.

In the past, we have worked hard to help educate and inform members and non-members alike about various workforce issues, including the potential creation of a new dental provider; I hope now that you remain involved as this fight moves to a different arena. I write this article a few weeks before Dental Action Day with the expectation that, as you read this, I will be confident in reporting the success of our mission to help protect the public’s ability to access quality dental care by ensuring we retain the dentist’s role as the sole person responsible for dental diagnosis and subsequent surgical treatment. Having gone through years of lectures and detailed instruction supplemented by countless hours of practical training, dentists are appropriately armed with a wealth of knowledge and technique that stands unsurpassed by the undeniably limited skills of those who have not graduated from such programs.

together as a collective and well-organized group of professionals, those with the power to affect tangible change will have no other option but to listen to our concerns and implement the proper policies.

Give Kids a Smile Day to provide dental treatments for those who are unable to access such care at our private clinics due to a variety of socioeconomic barriers. I urge you all to become involved in this effort not only because we are infinitely blessed to have the skills necessary to make a fundamental change in a child’s life, but because what we offer extends beyond the clinical and into the personal lives of these young boys and girls. Perhaps the most intrinsically life-changing days I have ever been able to experience were those I spent this past year providing dental care to the disproportionately underserved men, women and children of El Salvador. Dentistry is fulfilling and the daily interactions we have with our patients are satisfying, but even the few moments I spent with each hopeful patient in the villages of Central America were nothing short of inspiring. It is a sad state of affairs when along with forgetting to be eternally grateful for our incredible good fortune, we fail to offer our time and services to those who would benefit the most. It is not just my hope but my utter belief that you will join me and fellow members in donating all we can to various other similarly admirable volunteer projects.

While we press forward in our efforts to improve the state of dental care in our immediate and greater community, I find that taking a moment to reflect on the power of perspective is fairly eye-opening.

Apart from the issue of mid-level providers and in light of current debate regarding healthcare reform in the shadow of budget constraints, the topic of the dental impact on rising healthcare costs has crept into our national dialogue. If I presented to you the numerical data of 830,000 visits to the ER being dental-related (per available 2011 data), we would all be similarly disquieted by what seems to be a staggering number; equally staggering, however, is the shift in perspective you will likely experience upon realizing that this statistic shrinks significantly when juxtaposed with the total number of ER visits equaling 136,100,000 annually (per available 2009 data), making dental visits account for approximately only 0.6% of the national encounters. 2013 ADA Humanitarian Award While there is a significant and ongoing effort by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to encourage use of new healthcare information technology, particularly by Medicare and Medicaid providers, it is often misunderstood and misrepresented.

It’s well know that dental EHR systems are a major investment for paper-based or hybrid (paper and electronic) dental offices, requiring significant amounts of money, time, training and adjustment to new way of doing things in order to maximize return on investment.

To avoid unnecessary, premature and costly expenditures on dental EHR systems, the ADA has developed the “ARRA, HITECH, and EHRS Data Sheet” for dentists and their employees to review. Members who think they may be eligible for either the Medicare or Medicaid incentives program can find out more about these programs at the ONC providers site.

At home in Washington State, he served as the dental director and is now a staff dentist for Lindquist Dental Clinic for Children, a community-based, private non-profit clinic that sees over 30,000 patient visits each year by children from low-income families. “I would like to sincerely thank Dr. Shinn for his contributions to the dental profession, and congratulate him on being the 2013 recipient of the ADA Humanitarian Award,” said Dr. Robert A. Faiella, ADA president. “This prestigious award is designed to recognize an ADA member who has made a lasting impact on the oral health of their fellow human beings. It is clear that Dr. Shinn has changed the lives of individuals, and motivated other health care professionals to get involved and to give their time and resources to those in need.” Dr. Shinn has received many accolades for his work, including the Washington State Dental Association 2003 Citizen of the Year and the 2003 National Jefferson Award, the nation’s highest honor for public service.

Our dream was simple: provide free complex oral extractions for those patients that our dental safety net clinics could not treat. In its first year, the Clinic has seen over 570 patients, treated 2,163 teeth and provided over $731,000 in free care.

We have funded site visits for Medical Team International dental vans which provide access to dental care at homeless shelters, food banks and senior centers—truly reaching the most vulnerable and marginalized among us. Our Foundation funded care for 297 people in 29 sites around the County. Your generosity helps us eliminate dental pain and infection among King County residents.

Consider the Monthly Dues Payment Option In 2012, the WSDA initiated a new policy, approved by the House of Delegates, to allow members to pay their dues on a monthly basis. In the first year, only about 28% of our membership took advantage of this option. Whether you are young in your practice of dentistry, in mid-life and raising a family or looking toward retirement, budgeting is an essential tool for long-term financial growth. Paying your dues on a monthly basis may be just the thing you need to make membership more manageable. If you have not yet renewed your membership for 2013, think about if monthly payments might be right for you. The plan is operated through the WSDA office.

Your monthly dues amount is divided into 12 equal payments. You give your credit card number and each month that amount is deducted from your credit card account. There is a $72 service charge added on to sign up for the plan, and it needs to be paid up-front. The WSDA requests that all those interested sign up by February 28th, if possible. Geezer Golf

By Al Munk DDS I am 62 years old now so I think I qualify as at least a “junior” geezer. The guys I play golf with vary in age from late fifties to early 80’s. So some are genuine geezer material and I am trying to learn from them as I begin my entrance into the “golden” years.

There are pluses and minuses to life in the geezer stage. When it comes to golf, a big plus is your wife doesn’t miss you anymore when you are gone.

“Honey, I’m leaving for golf now and I’ll be back in 6 hours”. Fine, she says, stay for 6 days if you want. In fact, just come back by spring when the lawn starts growing again and has to be mowed. There is certain lack of intimacy in geezerhood that is both humiliating and refreshing. Nothing is more pathetic than the newlywed who has to race back home from the golf course to be with his sweetie. Gag me with a spoon. There are unfortunately geezers who must play golf with their spouses. A pity, or perhaps a tragedy--worthy of a Shakespearian play. Grown men need the company of their own species (male) and when the spouse requires their presence on the sacred grounds of the links, serious detriment occurs. Thank the lord that my own wife thinks golf is a ridiculous waste of time and energy.

Conversation during geezer golf has its own parameters. It is a good substitute for medical school in terms of general disease processes. I probably know more about prostate cancer than a urologist and I haven’t even suffered from that malady yet. There is always cause for celebration in one’s golfing group following a hole-in-one or an erection following robotic prostate-ectomy.

All geezer golfers must take an orthopedic inventory prior to the morning’s round. There are always a few sore backs, shoulders, feet and necks. Ibuprofen is carried in lockers and golf bags. Everyone is on a first name basis with their orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist.

I am learning the techniques of becoming a dirty old man. I have watched and listened carefully to my elders and have a fair idea of what behavior is expected of me as I gracefully age. The conversation on the course has only three permitted topics—golf, other sports, and dirty jokes. One may speak of one’s family or spouse, but only to complain about said subjects. For example: “My wife had the nerve to yell at me about spending $500 on a new

driver”. They just don’t understand. Discussing women’s sports is permitted though only in the context of how they look while wearing shorts. Any dirty joke is permissible though one is unlikely to hear one lasting more than 15 seconds as geezers cannot remember a joke with more than 30 words. They also cannot remember or see where they just hit their drive which leads to problems along the way. Future golf will feature GPS embedded into golf balls which will take care of this annoying problem. Lunchtime is particularly instructive in geezer golf. It is important to flirt with the waitresses at lunch. At our age, despite Viagra, we are considered harmless by all youthful female humans so we can flagrantly disregard common social mores. Geezers want to have onion rings for lunch but must suffer through salad to keep their cholesterol count below 1000.

A really annoying aspect of geezer golf which my own father complained about is that your golf companions keep dying. He made it to 85 before kicking the bucket and had to constantly recruit new playing partners. Geezers are pretty set in their ways and do not easily adjust to new personalities.

If one of your playing partners croak during the round, the custom is to hit the ball and drag Harry, hit the ball and drag Harry. The round is not to be stopped for something as trivial as a massive coronary. Besides, geezers are not good with cell phones and would likely have forgotten the three digit Medic One phone number. As well, how can one know if Harry was just taking a nap, which we all occasionally need during a strenuous round of golf?

As you can see, the road to geezer golf is a complex one, requiring years of study and preparation. I am confident that with my good start, I will glide into geezerdom with all the necessary skills to do our gender proud. That’s all for now from Ballard.
