dinner and two CE credits for members. Topics include airway development, MRONJ, restorative work on “black triangles”, and a WSDA update. You will find more detailed programming information on page 10, and we look forward to seeing you at meetings throughout the year. Happy Hour events have also returned to SKCDS. The Executive Council has renewed its commitment to providing opportunities for professional camaraderie and the Membership and New Dentist Committees have made plans for dentists and dental students to meet in venues around the county for fellowship and refreshment. Another unexpected situation SKCDS faced this fall was the inability of several elected delegates to attend the WSDA House of Delegates. The great news is that when other members were asked to volunteer, there were far more volunteers than positions available. Multiple new volunteers will bring fresh ideas to the society as they are placed into committees and leadership positions. It is inspiring that so many dentists are willing to give back to our profession.

Dr. Lisa Egbert

From Challenges, Opportunities Arise

Thank you to the scores of SKCDS volunteers who have contributed to the success of our society. Much has been accomplished. After working, through adversity, we have become more knowledgeable, nimble and focused. Most of all, thanks to every member for choosing to belong. Together, we turn challenges into opportunities.

As an employer, I watched my staff members face many challenges. In general, I knew that they would learn from difficult situations and come away Sincerely, stronger and more resourceful. In my role last year as SKCDS president-elect and now as president, I have witnessed similar tests and triumphs for our society. Dr. Lisa Egbert

Very few organizations can last over 100 years without facing a few bumps in the road. As a result of facing issues together, our Executive Council and leadership have grown stronger. The ADA provided an excellent governance and leadership training to help us prepare to on-board a new Executive Director. The board is clear about our goals for the next year, the most important of which is to hire a qualified Executive Director who can work with SKCDS leadership to provide outstanding service to our members and community. In the interest of transparency and reducing bias in locating and hiring a capable Executive Director, SKCDS engaged a professional search firm that specializes in non-profit placements. An Interim Executive Director, Barry McConnell, was identified and joined us full-time. Mr. McConnell successfully led the Make-A-Wish Foundation for 27 years. He has used his experience to assess the needs of our society and apply that information toward searching for a legacy leader for SKCDS. He has also enlisted the expertise of Ms. Sandra Anderson in supporting our membership services. We are happy to have them both on our team. You can read more about Barry on page 5. The Program Committee has once again secured four excellent speakers and venues for our 2019-2020 membership meetings. Each meeting will offer complimentary 4 l 2019 SKCDS FALL QUARTERLY

Meet Interim Executive Director Barry McConnell In the midst of a challenging year, SKCDS has been very fortunate to retain the services, and expertise, of Barry McConnell, as the Interim Executive Director. Barry McConnell recently retired as President & CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska & Washington. His career at the Foundation began in February 1991 as Executive Director. He has served in the not-for-profit sector his entire professional career. In his role with Make-A-Wish, Mr. McConnell had overall responsibility for planning, managing, and directing a comprehensive effort to attract volunteers and private financial support for the benefit of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Mr. McConnell is a graduate of the University of Washington. He is a certified fundraising executive (CFRE), a member of the Association

of Fund Raising Professionals (AFP), and past president of the Northwest Development Officers Association (NDOA). In 2003 he was the recipient of NDOA’s Professional Achievement Award. Additionally, he is a past chair of the board of visitors for Seattle University’s Executive Master of Not-for-Profit Leadership program, and currently serves on the University of Washington’s Fundraising Certificate Program Advisory Committee. Mr. McConnell is currently working as a consultant and advises nonprofit organizations and executives on strategic leadership related to the not for profit sector. With focused experience in Non-Profit Management, Strategic Planning, Staff/Volunteer Motivation, and New Business Development his skill set is ideally suited to the current needs of the SKCDS.

SKCDS and the 2019 WSDA House of Delegates Meeting The WSDA House of Delegates was held in late September at the historic Davenport Hotel in Spokane. Dr. Ashley Ulmer, of Spokane, welcomed the WSDA board, delegates and guests to the three-day event. She shared a historic perspective of the Spokane area, including Expo ’74 and development of the Spokane River Walk. WSDA President, Dr. Chris Delecki, and 11th District ADA Trustee, Dr. Linda Edgar, both members of SKCDS, informed the Delegates about the current events in the organizations they lead. Dr. Chad Gehani, president of the ADA, spoke about inclusion and strength through uniting all dentists together with one voice. He was joined by his wife, Dr. Rekha Gehani, an orthodontist and active participant in the ADA. Dr. Gehani was installed as the 156th president of the ADA on September 9 in ceremonies at the 2019 House of Delegates in San Francisco. He is the first internationally trained dentist and naturalized American citizen to become the president of the ADA. Together, he and his wife are eloquent ambassadors and strong leaders for our profession. It was special to have them in attendance at our State gathering. Dr. Bea Gandara, UW Oral Medicine faculty member, was honored at the WSDA Citizen of the Year Dinner. For many years, Dr. Gandara has served the homeless and others who have difficulty attaining dental care. She has also encouraged many youth from underserved communities to become dentists by showing them that it is possible to rise above difficult circumstance. Two of our Seattle-King County Dental Society members were elected to leadership roles. Dr. Amy Cook was chosen to serve on the WSDA Board of Directors, and Dr. Greg Ogata was elected to be a Delegate to the ADA House representing Washington State. There was lively, respectful debate and resolutions were passed on topics such as drug take-back programs, access to electronic medical records, and the scope of duties for the dental team. The overarching tone was one of dentists from across the State working together for the betterment of the profession and patient care. Thank you to our elected delegates who gave of their time and expertise to serve in the WSDA House. They are Drs. Lisa Egbert, Kirk King, Austin Baruffi, Christine Kirchner, Greg Ogata, Jeff Schur, Christine Shigaki, Randy Ogata, Negar Sherkat, Danny Tremblay, Chapin Densmore, Adam Kennedy, Mikaeyli Moore Fujita, Sam Sage and Lee Zamos. Special thanks to the alternate delegates who agreed to participate and vote in the House on short notice. They are Drs. Princy Rekhi, Amy Cook, Sarah Fraker, Jay Deiglmeier, Harlyn Susarla, Rolf Christensen and Brian Cave.

The Safety Net You Never Knew You Had! Everyone struggles with hard times at some point in his or her life. Maybe it is a divorce or a death in the family. Maybe health issues are complicating your practice and your finances. Financial challenges create stress, which then makes the situation even worse. When you are independently employed this is even harder to deal with. For this reason, the ADA Foundation instituted a Relief Grant program more than 100 years ago; and, it carries on today. Until about 10 years ago, the fund was linked to each individual Society and the Societies were requested to identify and evaluate the applicants. Today, the process is handled directly through ADA Foundation headquarters in Chicago. While this method is much more efficient, it has resulted in fewer and fewer members being aware of this valuable program. This member benefit can have a significant positive impact on a dentist who is facing challenging times. The ADA Foundation discretionally awards relief grants to assist with temporary daily living expenses. The relief grants are a short-term option to help a member in dire circumstances. Relief grants are subject to renewal based on the availability of funds and the discretion of the ADA Foundation. The funding is made available to the member in monthly installments, not to exceed twelve months. Additionally, a member has the option of a one-time request for emergency assistance. If you are interested in learning more about this benefit, or to submit application, please go to the ADA Foundation webpage. The application form is also available through SKCDS. If you have questions about the ADA Foundation Relief Grant application process, contact Tracey Schilligo, Grants Manager at 312.440.2763 or schilligot@ada.org.

The City by the Bay Hosts the ADA The 2019 ADA Annual Meeting, held in San Francisco, was extra special as it was held in conjunction with the FDI World Dental Congress. The opening ceremonies kicked off with a traditional flag ceremony, announcing each country present and attendees wildly cheering and waving their country’s flag. Like the Olympic Games, the countries were presented in alphabetical order with the host country at the end. The Canadian and Chinese dentists deserve recognition for their enthusiasm. Continuing Education offerings are a staple of every Annual Meeting. Featured topics included sleep medicine, headlined by SKCDS member Dr. Steve Carstensen, as well as classes for staff members, team-building and wellness and programming specifically for New Dentists. Each course was filled with eager-to-learn attendees from all over the globe. Washington State was well represented by presenters as well as attendees. In addition to Dr. Carstensen, other local presenters included Drs. Jon and Kevin Suzuki from Bellevue. Additional local speakers included Leon Hermanides, Christine Revitte, Tom Seery and Phillip Weinstein. The ADA House of Delegates met to conduct the business of the organization. Dr. Chad Gehani, of New York, was sworn in as the president of the ADA, representing roughly 163,000 members. The following dentists represented the state of Washington. Dr. Theodore Baer; Dr. Austin Baruffi; Dr. Marissa Bender; Dr. Dennis Bradshaw; Dr. Amy Cook; Dr. Christopher Delecki; Dr. Linda Edgar; Dr. Bryan Edgar; Dr. Ronald Dahl; Dr. Bernard Larson; Dr. Gregory Ogata; Dr. Cindy Pauley; Dr. Princy Rekhi; Dr. Nathan Russell; and Dr. Mary Smith. Of these, eight are from SKCDS. Connecting with other dentists is a highlight of every ADA meeting. With thousands of dentists in attendance and receptions for every specialty and dental school, there was ample opportunity for camaraderie. Lastly, San Francisco offered great opportunities for sight-seeing, shopping, and enjoying culinary delights. Many attendees extended their stays to visit the nearby wine country. SKCDS was well-represented at this year’s meeting and we hope to see you next year in Orlando, October 15 – 18, 2020! Dr. Mark Egbert

Obituary:

Dr. Robert E. Drury, DDS November 10, 1932 - September 12, 2019 Robert E. Drury (Bob) was born in Carlinville, IL. He attended Backburn College there and majored in pre-med and math, then attending St. Louis University and graduated in 1957 with a DDS degree. The United States Public Health Service (USPHS) offered him a one year internship at their Hospital in Baltimore, Md. After presenting a research paper on Hypnosis in Dentistry, the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD offered him a position as research dentist. He worked 5 years at NIH, doing research there, but also in several South American countries. The office of the Surgeon General, Luther Terry at that time, sent him to Geneva, Switzerland, representing the USA in dental matters at the World Health Organization (WHO). The USPHS Hospital on Staten Island, NY was his next assignment. There he met his wife, Karin. They were married in Germany before heading for his next assignment to Seattle. WA. Their 2 daughters were born there. They fell in love with the beautiful Pacific North West and decided to raise their family in the small town of North Bend, 30 miles east of Seattle. They opened a dental practice in town and lived there till 1998 when they moved to Englewood, FL. Bob loved the outdoors, bird hunting, fishing, canoeing, hiking and camping always accompanied by the family dogs or his wife and daughters. One of his favorite hobbies was magic and he enchanted many young patients chair side with magic tricks and funny stories. He was passionate about treating every patient gently, without pain and with dignity, taking lots of time to alleviate fear and anxiety. He called dentistry his hobby that he enjoyed very much. Bob was a life member of the American Dental Society (ADA) and the local Seattle/King County Chapter, as well as VFW and DAV. After his retirement the Drury’s travelled to the Europe, Australia and New Zealand, attending magic conventions and enjoyed meeting other magicians. Bob was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) and a member of the Order of Merlin, and exclusive fraternity of the IBM. In 1996, after presenting a magic act, one of his inventions, the prestigious Magic Circle of London, initiated him into their society. The Drury family often performed magic for some dental groups, including a show at the annual SKCDS banquet in 1984. Dr. Drury ended the show with the following poem that he wrote: For those of you who have learned to prowl, to move lightly about the mouth with nary a howl, for those who perceive that person in our chair, deserves to be treated with our best flair, for we that can conjure a smile to the face, of a previously scared member of the human race, then it would be in recall, dentists are the greatest magicians of all! The warm climate of Florida healed his aching joints and back enough so that he was able to return to his favorite sport, tennis, for a number of years. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karin, and daughters Anne (Rob) and Catherine. A Celebration of Life and funeral at the Sarasota National Cemetery are planned for a later date. Memorial Donations may be made in Bob’s honor to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), PO Box 14301 Cincinnati, Ohio 45250.

Walking for a Great Cause There is no place more beautiful than Seattle in the fall. The blue skies

and fall colors were the perfect backdrop to a brisk walk around Juanita Beach Park in Kirkland for the annual Washington Oral Cancer Foundation run/walk. The event was held on Saturday, October 12th. This yearly event raises much-needed funds for research and advocacy to fight the growing problem of oral cancer. As those in the dental community know, oral cancer is on the increase. The Oral Cancer Foundation’s core mission is to reduce the incidence of oral cancer in the U.S. population, and support those who are currently or have been impacted by the disease. They do this through increased public and professional awareness. The annual run/walk not only raised money but also awareness in the medical and dental communities. Early detection is critical to increasing survival rates and limiting physical impact. The run/walk featured sponsors’ booths along with food, music, activities, information and free oral cancer screenings. Teams were formed to honor those who have experienced oral cancer, as well as teams like the UW Dental Students. The run/walk provides opportunities for members to come together outside of the usual dental office, or class setting, and socialize with their peers. SKCDS was proud to sponsor this event for the third time in support of our members and their patients.

Travel By Al Munk DDS My dad liked to travel, my mom liked to stay home. Dad usually won. In 1960, we rented a Mercury Monterrey and drove from western Washington to New York City with two parents and four kids. Parents must have been tougher in those days as I would be hesitant to drive to Tacoma with my kids at a similar age. Once an hour we would rotate positions. The favored position was in front with the parents. Once every four hours, you had to spend in the middle of the back seat, the dungeon level of the Mercury Monterrey. After interminable driving, we would stop at a Travel Lodge and jump in the pool. I suppose this memory conditioned me to take a few driving vacations with my two kids later on in my life. This worked well when they were pint-sized, but ever deteriorated as they grew older. By junior high they became so ornery, that I abandoned all hope of a family vacation. I have stuck to this principle ever since, avoiding certain mayhem and bloodshed. My children are now in their later thirties, and we have not taken a family vacation in the last 20 years. This assured the survival of parents and children in the Munk brigade.

On graduating from dental school, I did a bit of travelling. I took a job with the British Columbia Public Health service, running a mobile van around B.C. fixing teeth. I brought along my girlfriend at the time and we travelled all over B.C. for a year, filling cavities in loggers and farmers in the wilds of Canada. This was a fun year, giving new meaning to “geographic success”, as every few weeks we left town, moving on to the next venue. I learned to fix dental equipment that year, as there were no repairmen to call in Horsefly, B.C. After a return to civilization in Seattle, I joined a few study clubs. I have no particular talent at dentistry, but I did find that after hanging around study clubs for 20 years or so, they want you When I was in college, I got the itch to travel once again. With no money to teach other study clubs. This generated more travel which continues to to speak of, hitch-hiking was my transportation of choice. Freightcar-hopping this day. Europe, Hawaii, Montana, the works. No more hitchhiking for this was long out of fashion, though I enjoyed the tales my father would tell of his kid—I fly now. youthful life on the tracks and rail yards. I hitched from Seattle to southern California several times in the seventies. Even then, this was throwing your life Flying in airplanes regularly introduces a whole new set of skills. to the random events of the universe, and you never knew what would happen You have to learn how to negotiate airports, what to eat, and where to in the next hour. The next ride could be a bus load of dope-smoking hippies, sit on the planes. After hundreds of flights, I have come to enjoy certain or a serial killer. I suppose this was the exciting part of budget travel. When rhythms of the process. I like the moving sidewalks, the constant eating you are 21 years old, you are invulnerable and relish whatever adventure is just and drinking, and the people all in a rush to get somewhere and have around the next corner. I survived these years with tales to tell and there was fun. I am not a religious man, but when I am seated on a plane, and always a girl to visit far away. an offensive lineman for the Seattle Seahawks is coming down the aisle, I do say a prayer that he does not have the seat next to me. I was even more pray for the skinny college girl behind the football player instead. broke than during college, and we all remember how busy dental school kept us day and night. I did hitch to California once with a dental school chum. At That’s all for now from Ballard. one point, the state patrol checked up on us. I had my student ID from the UW, but all my pal had was his membership card for the Puget Sound Mycological Society—the mushroom club. This confounded the state patrolman sufficiently that he let us go without penalty.
