YOU ARE TRUE CHAMPIONS!

Harold & Arlene Schnitzer Family Fund of OJCF Arlene Schnitzer & Jordan Schnitzer

Welcome Thank you for joining us for the Friends of the Center Brunch! This yearly event gives us an opportunity to bring together the MJCC community— members, friends and guests—to show our support for the J. Our membership continues to grow, as we expand our programs and services to meet the needs of more and more members of our community. If you are not yet a member, please pick up a membership packet and request a tour at the Member Services Desk before leaving today. For over a century, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center has been the “living room” of Portland’s Jewish community providing offerings that meet a broad range of interests. Our innovative programs are constantly updated to better serve our diverse community. Last summer, we hosted the Maccabeats to a sold out crowd, and we expect attendance at this year’s Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration to, once again, top 1000! We hope you’ll join us for our engaging array of films, concerts, gallery exhibitions, lectures, and classes in the coming months. We’re also excited about our expanded offerings in the areas of recreation and fitness. Finally, be sure to review our Day Camp brochure to learn more about our exciting summer programs for children from 3 to 15! The MJCC’s community includes people of all faiths and backgrounds. We provide financial aid to members who need assistance, and your generous contribution today will enable us to continue to do so. Your donation also supports specialized programs to care for individuals with health concerns such as Parkinson’s disease, physical disabilities, chronic pain, and many other challenges. The MJCC is a special place because of the efforts of many people over many years. We want to thank the board members, staff, donors, members, and volunteers—past and present—who have dedicated themselves to ensuring that the MJCC continues to serve our growing Jewish community. This morning is a celebration of community spirit, Jewish values and individual achievement. We will be awarding The Harry Glickman Scholar Athlete Award to two impressive high school students, and we will also be honoring new inductees into the Oregon Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Our keynote speaker, Susan Stamberg will share inspiring stories from the perspective of a Jewish mother and professional journalist. Thank you for being here this morning, and thank you for supporting our MJCC!

The MJCC Story Founded in 1914, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center began its life in the B’nai B’rith Building on SW 13th Avenue and Mill Street, quickly becoming the hub of Jewish living for Portland’s growing Jewish population. From its beginning, the Center has always served all families without regard to religion, background or ability to pay. For many local families, the JCC has been a tradition for generations. Many recall learning to swim from the legendary Mickey Hirschberg (who taught swim lessons for 49 years), or playing basketball with Harry “Polly” Policar (who spent 45 years at the Center). More than one family can trace their roots to the Center since many married couples tell stories of meeting at the Center. In 1971, the Center moved to its current location on SW Capitol Highway and has expanded immensely over the years. During this period, before they had their own facility, the Portland Trailblazers held their practices in the MJCC gymnasium. The building’s name was changed to the Mittleman Jewish Community Center in 1976 to honor Helen Rena Mittleman following a significant donation from member Harry Mittleman. In 1987 and in 1996, the Min Zidell Education Building and the Miriam Abrams Wing were added to accommodate Portland Jewish Academy. In 2003, the Sportsplex was erected for indoor soccer and gymnastics. In 2004, the Center faced a challenging period. Due to the commitment of the emergency board chaired by Jordan Schnitzer, the MJCC embarked on a major capital campaign to renovate the building and thrive in a new era. The MJCC’s subsequent capital campaign—Roots & Rafters—has enabled the Center to make much-needed upgrades to the aging building, while providing an endowment to address future capital needs. Thanks to these major facility improvements, the MJCC is now a thriving community center, with over 1,750 member units, representing recently 4,000 individuals. Several monumental events and activities take place at the J including Israeli Independence Day celebrations, Purim carnivals, Jewish Community Orchestra concerts, b’nai mitzvot, weddings, quinceañeras and more. The Center welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds for cultural, arts, and educational events, sports classes and leagues, a state-of-the-art fitness facility, afterschool activities for kids and drop-in childcare. Over 1,000 people come through the doors daily.

Summer is a particularly busy time on campus when MJCC summer day camp—one of the oldest camping traditions in Portland—is in session, offering an exciting array of options for children ages 3-15, and a variety of activities including arts and crafts, swimming, sports, theater, cooking, and more. Since 1947, kids love their summers at the J and return year after year. For over a century, the MJCC has served as the living room for the Jewish community as well as Southwest Portland. With your help, the MJCC will continue to meet the needs of our community for generations to come.

MJCC through the years 1914: The B’nai B’rith Building Association was founded on SW 13th Avenue and Mill Street. 1921: The Center’s Camping program began (B’nai B’rith Camp). 1923: The name changed to B’nai B’rith Center. 1924: Mickey Hirschberg joined the staff developing an award-winning swimming/water therapy program. 1938: The name changed to Jewish Community Center. 1947: Preschool opened and day camp program started. 1954: Celia Lesman served as the Center’s first female board president. 1971: Jewish Community Center moved to 6651 SW Capitol Hwy. and was later renamed the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. 1978: Harry “Polly” Policar retired after working at the JCC for 45 years. 1986: Hillel Academy merged with the Jewish Education Association and became Portland Jewish Academy (PJA). PJA occupies the Min Zidell Education Building on the MJCC Campus. 1996: The Marian Abrams Children’s Wing opened. 2003: The Sportsplex opened on the MJCC campus. 2005: The MJCC began a major renovation. 2007: The property was renamed the The Schnitzer Family Campus. 2014: The MJCC celebrated its 100th Anniversary.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland is proud to support the Mittleman Jewish Community Center as they inspire and empower all in our Jewish Community to be their very best.

Oregon Jewish Sports Hall of Fame The Oregon Jewish Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2012 to honor Jewish men and women who have accomplished extraordinary achievements in sports and have a deep connection to the State of Oregon. The goal is to inspire and educate the Jewish community, and the community at large, that sports play a major role in our Jewish culture. For 2018, we have two new inductees:

Tom Goldman

Tom Goldman is NPR’s sports correspondent. His reports can be heard throughout NPR’s news programming, including Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and NPR.org. With a beat covering the entire world of professional sports, both in and outside of the United States, Goldman’s reporting covers the broad spectrum of athletics from the people to the business of athletics. During his more than 20 years with NPR, Goldman has covered every major athletic competition including the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals, golf and tennis championships, and the Olympic Games, including the recently completed Winter Olympics. His pieces are diverse and include both perspective and context. Goldman often explores people’s motivations for doing what they do, whether it’s solo sailing around the world or pursuing a gold medal. In his reporting, Goldman searches for the stories about the inspirational and relatable amateur and professional athletes. Goldman contributed to NPR’s 2009 Edward R. Murrow award for his coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and to a 2010 Murrow award for contribution to a series on high school football, “Friday Night Lights.” Tom moved to Oregon in 1963 but left for Washington D.C. when he first joined NPR. He moved back to Portland in 2000. Earlier in his career, Goldman’s piece about Native American basketball players earned a 2004 Dick Schaap Excellence in Sports Journalism Award from the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University and a 2004 Unity Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.
