and Idaho. Prior to entering the Legislature, she was elected to her local school board where she served two terms as Board President and led several levy campaigns. She brings a wealth of experience and numerous skills to her new position with the Society. Cathy Dahlquist will begin her job with us on April 9, 2018. After a short overlap with our retiring executive director, Jennifer Freimund, we know she will hit the ground running. She has several exciting ideas about ways in which the Society can increase the value of your membership. She plans to leverage her grassroots networking and tremendous communication skills to involve more of the membership in the Society’s efforts. Stay tuned for opportunities to meet her in person. In the meantime, please join me and the Executive Council in extending a warm welcome to Cathy Dahlquist.
Dr. Craig Neal
HELLO AND FAREWELL! It is hard to believe that this is my last column as your president. On April 24th at our officer installation general membership meeting, I will turn over the reins to Dr. Kirk King, our incoming president, and become immediate past president. It has been a busy and rewarding year for me, and I am deeply grateful for all the support from the Society’s Executive Council and various Committee chairs have provided me. Perhaps the most significant accomplishment of my presidency has been to hire our new Executive Director, Ms. Cathy Dahlquist. With the help of fellow task force members, we reviewed many applications; and, after interviews, Cathy Dahlquist was our clear first choice. Many of you may recognize her name from her years as a State Representative in Olympia. While there, she was a tremendous friend of dentistry and was active in our fight against midlevel providers. She sponsored the reinstatement of adult dental Medicaid, successfully obtained capital funding for our Dental School and averted an attempt to quadruple the private practice dentist tax rate. She received numerous awards while serving. Since leaving the Legislature, she has been leading the government and external affairs department for Frontier Communications where she communicates and advocates for the company in Washington, Oregon, Montana 4 l 2018 SKCDS SPRING QUARTERLY
In other news, we continue our efforts to make Delta Dental more transparent and accountable to patients. Thanks to many of you, Dr. Pauley delivered over 1,500 signed no confidence petitions calling for Mr. Jim Dwyer’s immediate resignation. While Mr. Dwyer has announced his retirement in early 2019, the petition requests that Delta Dental immediately name a successor who will focus on core values of patient care, responsive governance and transparency. We encourage you to read our weekly e-newsletter (usually sent on Tuesdays) to keep informed. In closing, it has been my honor to serve as SKCDS president over the past year. I have enjoyed working on the many initiatives being undertaken by the Society and the WSDA. There is a lot of great work being done in a number of arenas important to us as dentists, and I know I speak for Cathy and Kirk in saying they would welcome your assistance. Get informed and get involved! If you have any questions or ideas, shoot me an email at drcraig@nealoms.com. I would love to hear from you.

From Where I Sit For 4,511 days it will have been my honor to serve as the executive director of your Dental Society and Dental Foundation. When I started on December 15, 2005, I had no idea of what lay ahead and how long I would stay. My longest previous job tenure was nine years and here I am 12 years and some months later—getting ready to retire. Why I have stayed? The answer is really one word: YOU. I can honestly say that I have yet to meet a member with whom I have not enjoyed talking and/or working with over these many years. I continue to be impressed by the intellect and sheer passion that so many of you bring to the practice of dentistry. Your drive to protect your patients and the integrity of your profession has brought on my “A game.” You have challenged me (sometimes uncomfortably) to work hard and continually push us to the next level. Working with your leadership over the years, we have created a culture where all are welcome and all are invited to speak their minds—even if it gets bumpy or challenges the status quo. This is YOUR organization, and I have never lost sight of that fact. I have enjoyed helping guide the Society and Foundation but YOU have done the heavy lifting—or at least ensured your peers did it on your behalf by encouraging and supporting your leaders. I’d like to believe we have increased participation and a sense of belonging as a result. As I look back over the years, there is so much of which to be proud. We are as financially strong as we have ever been. Our processes are open and transparent. We have modernized our communication with you (although there is much to be done). We answer our members’ only line and try to respond to member queries as soon as possible. We have built some tremendous programs like our award winning complex extraction clinic at the Swedish Medical Center. Our Forensic Committee helped identify bodies during the Oso mudslide. We have figured out a way to provide 4 free general membership meetings a year that award 8 continuing dental education credits as a membership benefit—all without raising your dues. The Foundation has raised millions of dollars and has given away over $1.3 million in an effort to proactively eliminate dental infection and pain. We have strengthened our relationships with other dental organizations like the WAGD. The list of achievements is lengthy and much of the effort has been done working with the leadership you elect. Perhaps the thing I am proudest of in my time here has been the work we’ve done in growing leaders in organized dentistry. For many, volunteering at the Society or Foundation is a first step in leadership and participation. I have watched—with a dental den mother’s pride—so many of you grow your skills in negotiating, communicating and advocating and then move on to new positions in organized dentistry, your practices or your community. I can think of no finer legacy than knowing I had some small part in that growth. These initiatives will not only continue but grow. There is a great team here at Central Office in Sandra Anderson and Abid Bhatti who will carry on these efforts, and I have every confidence that your new executive director, Cathy Dahlquist, will add her own important contributions. Your leaders are engaged and are challenging themselves to improve and enhance your membership benefits so that YOU know you are getting value for your dues and the support you need in the practice of dentistry. In closing, I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Edward Everett Hale, “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” SO, if you could do one thing for me as a parting gift, get involved with the Society or the Foundation. Trust me: it will give you gifts you never anticipated just as it has for me. All the best,
Jennifer L Freimund

The
Director’s Message
Perseverance came into play during the 2014 Legislative Session when drafting a bill in 2014 that passed in 2015. HB 1002 holds insurance carriers to transparency standards and was a victory for patients and providers alike. Thanks to Dr. Amy Cook and Dr. Cynthia Pauley who continued to pursue passage of the final bill, there is now a mechanism for insurance carrier transparency.
Over the last three years, I have had the privilege of managing the government and external affairs for a large technology company, covering Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. I was responsible for both regulatory and statutory regulations and requirements. My diversified experience understanding legislation, negotiating state rulemaking, while setting strategic corporate priorities has given me a deep understanding of how to develop goals and see them into action. I believe the SKCDS and theSKCDF has the ability to be generous philanthropists, advocate for priorities that put patients Ms. Cathy Dahlquist first and deliver exceptional benefits to the members. On June 3, I believe not much happens by chance. The journey that lead 2018, the Dental Society will be hosting a “Board Retreat” to enable me to the Seattle-King County Dental Society has been a filled leadership members to set 12 month, 24 month and 5 year goals. with politics, perseverance and passion. I became passionate about dental issues while serving in the Washington State Legislature. During my tenure as a State Representative, it became apparent that small business dental practitioners did not have a seat at the table when it came to ensuring their patients received the highest quality care they deserve. I rallied a few dentists to meet with myself and another Representative to draft a strategy to meet these goals moving forward. This is the time I became passionate about ensuring all patients in Washington State deserved to being treated fairly. Many politicians define “fairly” differently. This is when the politics came into play. I battled to ensure that patients received the highest level of patient care from the dental provider by blocking multiple mid level provider bills. These bills would have allowed those without the necessary training to perform irreversible procedures on the most vulnerable population. Politics takes constant education and time and with that comes successful results. I thrive by taking complex issues and reducing them into understandable facts that provide legislators an opportunity to take knowledge based votes, something all constituents expect from their elected representatives. 6 l 2018 SKCDS SPRING QUARTERLY
Over the last week, I have had the pleasure to work with Jennifer Freimund who kindly agreed to help transition the Executive Director position prior to her retirement. I appreciate your extremely kind welcome and thank you for the trust you have placed in me to guide your organization into the future. The future of the Seattle-King County Dental Society holds many exciting opportunities and I am absolutely thrilled to be part of your team.

Our Own Goodwill Ambassadors Most new members know that when they first join the Society they receive a welcoming phone call from an established member. SKCDS is fortunate to have a cadre of faithful volunteers: Ambassadors, who reach out to new members when they join our organization. The Ambassadors have had a marked impact on member retention over the years. Ambassadors connect with new members allowing both the new member and the Ambassador to broaden their referral circles, as well as meeting potential associates. Most significantly, Ambassadors make new members feel welcome and connected.
Dr. Camille VanDevanter recently said, “I’ve developed a friendship with new DDS, Susan Cha, and have been able to introduce her to many dentists in
Federal Way.” If you are interested in volunteering as an Ambassador, it is a minimal time commitment and it can be done from the convenience of your home or office. The advantages to volunteering are many. Former Chair of the Ambassador program, Dr. Peanut Hattaway, created a short, online training video that prospective volunteers can watch on YouTube. If you are looking for a way to give back to organized dentistry, this is a great option to consider. For more information, contact Sandra Anderson, Director of Membership Services, at sandra@skcds.com or by calling the office at 206.448.6620.

Reboot: Annual Boot Camp is a Success! New Dentist Boot Camp has become an SKCDS tradition over the past seven years. On March 24, the tradition continued as 23 young dentists gathered to learn the basics of starting a practice. Building on the changes we made in 2017, Boot Camp was more concise this year. We brought in some new presenters and used a new venue for holding the event. Our presenters included: • Rod Johnston of the Omni Practice Group, speaking about finding a practice to buy. • CJ Williams from Bank of America Practice Solutions followed with information on how to finance your practice. • Paul Constantine, of Constantine Builders, Inc., addressed building a practice space. • Interior Designer, Lori Saleba spoke about designing your space for aesthetics and function. Lori is Director of Interior Design at Freiheit Architecture. • Paul Schaber, of The Management Trust, followed with information on staffing for success. • Lastly, we had Robert Brown, owner of Max Technoloiges; speak about technology for your practice. Each presenters spoke for about 20 minutes and we concluded with a time for questions and answers. This year the event was held near the SKCDS office, in the community room of the Seattle First Baptist Church. The church has a large, well-equipped space and convenient parking. The seminar also included breakfast and lunch. Our food sponsors were WEO Media and Shikosha Dental Labs. Bank of America Practice Solutions also supported the event by printing booklets for each attendee. The booklets included notes from each presentation and contact information. Following the formal program, the attendees had time to meet the presenters, ask questions and eat lunch. The original concept of the seminar was to give young practitioners a “crash course” in starting a practice. By bringing all the necessary vendors in one place, a young dentist can get a good idea of what is involved in the process. Whether participants plan to build a new facility, transition an existing practice or simply learn about the players involved, there is something for everyone at Boot Camp. In addition to Boot Camp, the Seattle-King County Dental Society’s New Dentist Committee plans events such as the New Dentist program from January to May and regularly scheduled Happy Hours for young dentists and UW SOD students. For information on our programs for young dentists, please contact Sandra Anderson at sandra@skcds.com.

COLLECTIVE BIOGRAPHIES Dr Steven J Albright This proud Badger has been recognized with multiple honors including St. Catherine High School Alumni Hall of Fame, Marquette USOD 2007 Distinguished Alumni, WSDA Citizen of the Year 1999, and President SKCDS 2004-5. More than accolades though is the “love, honor, trust, and respect” one gets in places like Guatemala. Dental humanitarian work started selfishly. When asked to go to Haiti in 1980, he replied “when?” February in the Caribbean! ‘Sign me up’!! Steve’s volunteering currently totals 40+ teams in a dozen different countries, most with Paula who shares the same passion. What a blessing! He’s also thankful for outstanding mentors -- at Catholic school, in residency at Northwestern, and the past 20+ years at UWSOD in restorative and oral medicine. Steve claims to be a feminist since the ‘70’s having been influenced by many smart, strong women – his mother, dental assistants and hygienists, friends, mother-in-law, and wife of 30 years. Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s Steve missed being a hippie, but felt greatly influenced by “peace and love” which he shares abundantly. The Young Dentists are glad he’s finally a life member, having tried unsuccessfully to kick him out of their committee for almost three decades. Dr. Scott T Andrews Dr. Scott T. GIVE KIDS A SMILE!
This February the ADA’s Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program celebrated 16 years of providing dental care to underserved kids in our community. Give Kids a Smile is the largest children’s oral health charitable program in the country. Because of this program, 5.5 million children have been given free dental care since 2003. In addition, this year, the 3M Company donated 400,000 sealants, valued at $250,000, to be placed by participating volunteers. What began as an singular event held by Drs. Jeff Dalin and B. Ray Storm, in 2002, has served more than 5.5 million of those in need of dental care. When Drs. Dalin and Storm started GKAS they provided dental care to 400 children in St. Louis. Since 2003, when the ADA, Henry Schein, Proctor & Gamble, and DEXIS adapted the program nationally, over half a million volunteers have participated. Give Kids A Smile remains a critical piece of the ADA’s Action for Dental Health, a nationwide, community-based movement aimed at ending the dental health crisis facing America today. It is designed to address the dental health crisis in three distinct areas: 1. Provide care now to people who are suffering from untreated disease; 2. Strengthen and expand the public/private safety net; and 3. Bring disease prevention and education into communities. As every year, Seattle-King County Dental Society showed full support for the Give Kids A Smile program. Our volunteer doctors and their staff took time from their busy schedules to go out in the community and talk to kids about oral health, as well as providing oral health check-ups. Dr. Stephanie Su lead the Women In Dentistry event in January which generated interest among the attendees to hold educational and dental service events in their communities. Dr. Judson Werner, as every year, provided dental services to children in need of dental care. At the Central Office, SKCDS staff assembled, and delivered approximately 500 goodie bags that included toothbrushes, toothbrush covers, toothpastes, toothpaste tube squeezers and floss. Thank you for all your participation and support.

MEMBERSHIP ELECTION RESULTS Congratulations to the winners of the Seattle-King County Dental Society’s most recent election. We appreciate all the members who ran for elected office. Their dedication to organized dentistry is both vital to our success and deeply appreciated. Our new president is Dr. Kirk King. Dr. King obtained his dental degree from the University of Washington after growing up on Mercer Island and receiving his undergraduate degree from the UW. He has a general practice in Renton. Dr. King is a current Executive Council member and has served as Treasurer of the Seattle-King County Dental Society and as a delegate from SKCDS to the WSDA. He has served on the Board of Directors of WDIA and also serves on the Board of Directors of DentPAC. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling and scuba diving as well as learning any new ‘techie’ things that come along. Our new president elect is Dr. Lisa Egbert. A Pacific Northwest native, Dr. Lisa Egbert earned a Biology degree from the University of Washington. She then attended the UW School of Dentistry. After owning a dental practice for 22 years, Dr. Egbert went into semi-retirement, deciding to spend more time with her two high-school-aged sons and supporting her husband, Dr. Mark Egbert. Dr. Lisa is currently the Treasurer for the Seattle-King County Dental Society. She also serves as a member of the UW Bothell School of STEM Advisory Board. Dr. Egbert loves dentistry, but limits her practice to helping friends. In her free time, Dr. Lisa can be found at the gym, on the water, walking or reading. She is an avid sports fan, especially Husky football, Seattle Mariners and Seahawks. Involved with her sons, she often keeps the scorebook for Little League, bakes cookies for soccer teams and volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America. We have three new members of the Executive Council. Dr. Elizabeth A. Kutcipal is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon who practices in the Ballard neighborhood. She currently serves on the SKCDS Budget and Finance Committee and Leadership Committee. She has been very involved in the Washington Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Western Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and is active with AAOMS (American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons). She served a five-year term on the Board for the Seattle Floating Homes Association, and enjoys tinkering on her Lake Union floating home, or playing with her dogs in the mountains. Dr. Amanda Spivey has been re-elected to another three year term on the Executive Council. She completed her GPR training at Swedish Medical Center, and currently works in both a private practice in Kirkland and as an attending with the residents at the Swedish Community Specialty Clinic. When not working, Dr. Spivey enjoys spending time with her husband and her dogs. Dr. Joe Vaughn currently works in private practice in Wallingford. He did his residency at the University of Washington and worked for Neighborcare Community Health. He recently took over as Chair of the SKCDS Membership Committee. He also serves on the WSDA New Dentist Think Tank, WSDA Editorial Advisory Board, and writes regularly for the ADA New Dentist Blog and occasionally for the WSDA News. Joe is originally from Alabama, but enjoys living in the Pacific Northwest. In his free time, he likes to watch sports and movies, drink coffee, go for hikes and explore Seattle. Several Seattle-King County Dental Society members were elected to serve as delegates to the Washington State Dental Association’s governing body, the House of Delegates. Each member will serve a three year term. The Class of 2020 includes Dr. Lisa M. Egbert, president-elect, and Drs. Ryan M. Fox, Rica Mackert, Randall H. Ogata, Negar Sherkat, Timothy A. Hess and Danny Tremblay. Last but not least, the Society thanks our outgoing Executive Council members and delegates for their dedication over the years. Please join us in thanking Dr. Tim Hess, past president, Dr. Joe Vaughn, our secretary and Dr. Ryan Fox of the Executive Council. We also wish to recognize all of our ‘Class of 2017’ SKCDS delegates to the WSDA House: Drs. Jeff S. Abolofia, CR Anderegg, Amy J. Cook, Ryan M. Fox, Timothy A. Hess, Randall H. Ogata and Daniel M. Tremblay. We also wish to thank this year’s alternate delegates: Drs. Noah Letwin, Oleg Shvartsur and Mark Walker. Thank you to all of the members who work so hard on behalf of our membership!

Protecting your MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Accounts Receivable Key Arena Clinic 2018:
The Seattle Center announced that they have decided to change the dates for the annual free, community clinic. The clinic is now schedule for Thursday, September 20 through Sunday, September 23 in Key Arena. Since 2014, the responses from partners, volunteers, patients and the communityat-large to the have been universally positive, and the outcomes were greater than they imagined. Over the past four years, with your help, this clinic has provided millions of dollar worth of care to over 10,000 patients from western Washington. In 2017, the Seattle/King County Clinic welcomed over 4,200 volunteers. They exceeded their goal of treating over 4,000 patients, and providing $3.7million dollars worth of care. Please join us in serving our neighbors. If you have participated in any of the past Clinics, you know how rewarding it can be. Past participants have spoken highly of the wonderful experience they had and how easy it was to volunteer. Registration for volunteers is now open. Go to seattlecenter.org/skcclinic to register now and find more information about the event. This year, there will be 100 dental chairs on the Key Arena floor offering a variety of dental services. We need several hundred dental volunteers for the four days of the Clinic. The dates for 2018 happen to conflict with our annual WSDA House of Delegates meeting. Since many of our leaders will be attending the WSDA meeting, we encourage others to fill the gap and participate at the clinic. You can volunteer for one day or several days - it is your choice. Please consider volunteering AND bringing your entire dental team along to participate. Use it as a team building exercise and bring your staff. We welcome dental assistants and dental hygienists as well! Please join us for this highly visible (the dental treatment floor made the front page of the Seattle Times for three years in a row) and important event. It is considered to be one of the largest free clinics offered in the country.
Information is your strongest tool in protecting your accounts receivable. Building upon the documents provided by Nordic Insurance, Physicians and Dentists Credit Bureau has created new patient registration and financial obligation forms to help you secure payment for the services provided to the patient. These forms are designed to acquire the pertinent information but done in a streamlined fashion to obtain the necessary information relating to contact information, employment information, insurance and marketing, but consolidated into a single page so as to not overwhelm the new patient. Obtaining the information at the outset of the relationship with the patient provides several critical pieces in preserving the ability to be fully compensated for the services rendered. First, it is a formal request for the patient to buy-in to the treatment plan in the same way that you are providing time during your day to provide these services. Second, it allows you to understand the background of this patient (are they married? are the employed? did my Facebook ad work?). Lastly, in the event an outstanding balance needs to be referred for collections, we at Physicians and Dentists Credit Bureau have talking points we can use and a financial agreement that makes the patient contractually obligated to pay for the services and potential assets to levy in the event legal action needs to be taken. Ultimately, information is the cornerstone and the more facts about the patient you have, the more you have the ability to understand how the patient may approach the treatment that is proposed and the associated costs that go along with such a plan. Further, implementing these practices for each patient and then following up at each appointment to verify the continued accuracy of the information will help to preserve your accounts receivable and allow for a more individualized connection to the patient. To receive a free copy of these templates, please contact our office at 253-246-0300 or info@physndent.com.
