The original motor is retained, but the blades are removed for safety. The sport attracts all ages and is usually entered into in a spirit of fun rather than extreme competitiveness, though many do take it quite seriously. 2016 Citizens of the Year “The Angels of Amboy”

Terri Dyer, Diane Harmon, Marcella Langford, Inez Dixon and Dianne Armstrong The Angels of Amboy don’t fly: they walk—and serve Amboy while they’re doing it. Most every morning Terri Dyer, Diane Harmon, Marcella Langford, Inez Dixon and Dianne Armstrong are at it. Starting at Amboy Market, they circle Territorial Park and follow the yellow line through Amboy to the stop sign at Cedar Creek Road—about two miles round trip. Wednesdays on the way back they stop at RJ’s Espresso and Ice Cream shop for tea. Usually it’s for tea.

These five women also go to Curves in Battle Ground four times a week. In fact, it was at the Curves here in Amboy that the ladies first met, and it was in response to a walking contest that they began. That was ten years ago.

Heading for RJ’s Coffee Shop

An important friendship has developed among the women, and this has been one of the greatest benefits. They do other things together, such as shopping. How many people wish they had someone to do things with, someone to listen, someone to be there for them. Finding a walking partner might be the answer.

Along the road—Fritz and crew

They don’t walk alone; Fritz, their small white companion, trips along beside. Although Fritz is eight years old, he is slim, energetic and youthful looking. Walking does him good, just like it does for his human walking partners. All but one of these youthful women is over seventy. Terri says that her bone density has improved. But it may not be just the walking that does it.

The Angels of Amboy* have found other angels along the way. There are the people who wave at them. Others watch out for their safety. One man suggested that they get a flasher for those dim winter mornings— which advice they appreciated and followed. There are the people that thank them for the service they render. And what is that service? Keeping the Park and the roadway clean by picking up litter. The walkers are always equipped with plastic bags.

L to R: Inez, Marcella, Terri, Dianne, Diane

Picking up litter has its perks—the fun of finding things—once a wallet and once a trail of thirteen pennies. There are also plenty of beer cans which they take to recycle—blue cans in the spring and orange ones in the fall. The Amboy Angels are reluctant to accuse the Amboy community of littering. They think it’s more the weekend visitors and vacationers who do it. The walkers took responsibility for asking that the donation bins to be removed from Amboy since they had become trash dumping places. Amboy benefits from a cleaner look. The walkers expressed two wishes. One, that people take their trash home with them. Two, that a community exercise class be established at the Grange. Anyone want to take that on?

2016 BULL OF THE WOODS

Ray Waser

The 2016 Bull of the Woods is Ray Waser of Amboy. Ray was born to Ramey and Ida Waser in Kelso Washington in 1929. The family moved to Amboy in 1940 and eventually grew to a family of ten, consisting of five sons and three daughters, Dorothy, Ray, Albert, Eddie, June, Jane, John and Bobby Like many young men in that era Ray went right to work in the woods ,in the Amboy area. Ray married Lorraine Fasset of Amboy in 1949. He worked for Maranacus who built the Canyon Creek road also known as the USFS#54. Due to the terrain in the Canyon Creek drainage Ray learned a lot about drilling and blasting rock, skills that he used throughout his work years. After that job was completed Ray went to work for the Columbia Veneer Company on the road crew. He also worked on the rig up crew rigging spar trees in new units. Ray applied his experience in blasting while working on the rig up crew he devised a way to load bicycle tubes with just the right amount of explosives and place it in the perfect place in the tree where it needed to be topped to top the tree without damaging it. This was a much safer and labor saving method than the traditional method of sawing the top of the tree out with a short crosscut saw. Ray spent 10 years with Columbia Veneer before going to work for Nick Witt running rock drill and blasting right of way and rock pits. Ray also worked in all of the other phases of road construction for Nick when the drill wasn’t needed building road mostly up the east fork of the Lewis River. Ray then went to Work for Ben A. Thomas of Woodland Washington on the cutting crew around 1960. He was partnered up with Dick Gruber also of Amboy. The photo in this article of the huge old growth log with Ray and daughter Terrie standing alongside was taken in the Jack Creek area in the Kalama river drainage after the Columbus Day storm of 1962. This tree was one of the few that was still standing in and amongst the blow down that almost all logging crews were working in at that time. Cutting the tree was a real challenge being the longest bar the pair had was only fifty inches long. With some ingenuity and a lot of work the tree was successfully fallen and saved out quite nicely. The next obstacle was bucking the first two logs out of the tree, Ray and Dick bored in from all directions on the first two logs hoping that that would be enough for the cuts to break free. Bud Koplan, side rod for Ben Thomas, made his way out into the unit with a D-7 Cat to see if the cuts would indeed break free. After several hours of maneuvering, shoving and most likely swearing, the first two cuts of the giant tree refused to give up, the amount of wood reaming in the center of the tree that the fifty in bar couldn’t reach, deemed too much to break free. What now might you ask? Ray made his way to Grandpas barn that evening and pulled his 14 foot crosscut saw off the wall and blew the dust off of it. Then he and Dick finished the bucking of that tee the old fashioned way! In the late sixties Ray purchased a small Cat 22 for logging small private jobs on the weekends. Finding this to be a good opportunity, Ray left Ben Thomas in 1975. He began logging small salvage sales and doing small road construction jobs. By 1979 Ray had become busy enough to need some help so he partnered up with son in law Dave Roberts, and Waser and Roberts logging was formed. Later on Ray’s son Ramey would come to work for the company running cat and skidder. They logged state and federal salvage sales and did a good bunch of work for Ray’s former employer, Ben Thomas .Building road and salvaging blow down. Ray and Dave remained partners until 2008 when Ray decided to retire from full time logging. Ray and Lorraine have two children, son Ramey and daughter Terrie as well as two grandchildren Ryan and Greg, and many nieces and nephews. Ray sill helps Ramey with his firewood business and enjoys visiting with friends at the Chelatchie Store.

My Last Camp Eathyl Rotschy

I’m a broken down logger, I’m old and I’m gray, As for bushelin’ or riggin’ I’ve seen my last day, And for chokers and chainsaws, and the whistle’s shrill blast, They are only a memory, a ghost from the past.

But one thing’s for sure, I am brave and I’m tough, I don’t fear loose bark, rotten snags or that stuff. It’s easy to see, I have nothing to fear, As I nap after noon in my overstuffed chair!

Now I look out my window at second growth wood, And I look to the ridge where the spartree once stood, A haulback all rusty, laying out through the fern. Moss covering charcoal that was left from the burn.

But I still hear the echo of the riggin man’s cry, In my mind I see steam billow up in the sky, And the screech and the squawk of the sliver pull wood, As the tree leaves the stump, and the memory is good.

Old calkshoes hang down from a peg on the wall, My hard hat hangs by them, don’t need it at all, There’s no use for hard hats in overstuffed chairs. There’s a new safety catch word, “Don’t fall down the stairs!”

I knew I was whipped when I gave up my snoose, I thought I’d get younger, but it wasn’t much use. It did help my eyes, for it’s easy to see, It’s the years, not the owl, that has finally got me!

I used to drink whiskey, but now I drink tea, Can’t dance anymore, for I’ve got a trick knee. The girls used to smile as I passed them by, No they take a quick glance and they laugh ‘til they cry!

Oh, I’m a broken down logger, I’m old and I’m gray, As for yarders and skidders, I’ve seen my last day, I’ve hung my last block and I’ve felled my last tree, But from dreams of the past I shall never be free.

Ah the echoes and memories as I go on my way! I tried to give blood when the blood drive came through. ‘Tho I’m two sections short in my layout, they say, The nurse said, “Hey Pops, we should give some to you!” I’m all settled in, and I’m happy I swear, I thought I was tired of playing the tramp, In my last logging camp, my old overstuffed chair! But AGE kicked me out of my last logging camp.

To get an entry go to the local area businesses & pick one up or you can go to —the Territorial Days Park page at tdays.org or to lewisriver.com to download this year’s form. Entries will be judged on: Theme, Effort, Originality, & Overall Appeal. Our thanks goes out to The Reflector for their donation to the parade also. So come to Amboy and make some new memories!!!

This year’s parade will be Fantastic because of all of you!!
