OUTSIDE PRECEDENTS:
Curtis Street in Denver, from Fourteenth to Nineteenth Street, was known as the “Great White Way” in the early part of the Eighteenth Century. Dozens of theaters stood on both sides of the street, each having its own unique flamboyant architectural style. In a reverential attempt to preserve and respect heritage and history, many aspects of the old theaters were incorporated into the new theater and supporting development. The corner of Fifteenth and Champa owes the influence of its tower to the famed Tabor Grand Theater. The new theater takes cues from various old designs that used an apse as a centerpiece for the front facade.
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MACRO) in Rome deals with the incorporation of new into old in an interesting way. The old walls of the previous occupant (a brewing company) were insightfully connected via glass curtain wall at the corner and running over the top of the existing walls. This method was used in the Denver project where the old materials of the plaza are met and cut into by a glass wall from the tower above. A colonnade in Mariánské Lázně, Czech Republic, was the inspiration for the main entrance to the plaza from Champa street. High, fixed glass doors and a groin-vaulted canopy provide acoustics for performances.
