Tea Pavilion for Civic Center Park Denver, Colorado

T

he Tea Pavilion design project is a classical structure intended for Civic Center Park. It references the existing architecture, including the Capitol, City & County Building, and the other two pavilions on the North and South ends of the park. The pavilion is designed to enliven the park by offering a destination for refreshment, socializing, and respite. In harmony with the surrounding structures, references to the American West are integrated into the design. Additionally,

decorative and delicate cast-iron details balance the heavier feel of the stone columns and entablature. Twin domes in the wings echo the iron decoration from the underside. Emotional characteristics of the pavilion include grand, airy, elegant, and intimate. The pavilion has a center loggia, consisting of an entry/reception space in front of a cellaenclosed order counter, and two wings -- one having lounge chairs and side tables and the other furnished with bistro tables and chairs.

1 - Process Sketches. Experiential, emotional, and proportion sketches inspired by Richard Cameron of the Beaux-Arts Atelier.

2 - Site Plan. The location of the proposed pavilion draws people into the center of the park.

3 - Floor Plan. Curved wings match the embracing shape of the existing pavilions and the City & County Building.

4 - Front (East) Elevation. A Roman-inspired temple loggia stands elevated and distinct from the wings, but plays the central role in the tripartite composition. Three statues stand atop the pediment representing Denver’s principal founders: a miner, a rancher, and a mountain man trapper.

5 - Wing Cap Elevation. Each wing cap combines stone column solidity and a paper-thin ironwork screen and balustrade. Bas-reliefs depict a western icon stamped on each wing cap. In this case, a rodeo cowboy.

6 - Wing & Dome Section. The domes rest on short drums, banded with an architrave and cornice on the interior. Cast-iron spokes extend from the cornice, converging at the apex of each dome.

7 - Presentation Board. The composed assembly of drawings as presented in analog.
