market and since then, has been supplied from our dealership on the Gold Coast.

The birth of the Allegro Breeze in 2011 opened the door for a luxury Class A diesel pusher coach narrow enough for Australian regulations. Sure, Tiffin had been producing beautiful, bigger coaches for several decades at this stage but the narrow size of the Breeze made it a perfect candidate for the Australian

Powering the Breeze is an assertive Cummins ISV5.0 V8, the result of a three-year collaboration between Tiffin and Cummins. Designed, developed, and tested on the Breeze PowerGlide chassis, the ISV5.0 exceeds traditional diesel engines in durability, reliability, and performance. With an all new floor plan featuring 3 slide outs, these coaches are sure to impress! The Allegro Breeze comes in a variety of paint schemes outside opening up to a range

of cabinetry and decor options inside. At Tiffin Motorhomes, we build for quality first and foremost, limiting our production to ensure meticulous craftsmanship. It may not be the most business-savvy way to run a company but it is the best way. By investing the time and effort to do things right, we want you, as a Tiffin owner, to have the utmost confidence in your coach, as well as a peace of mind you won’t find with other manufacturers. You see, not only do we stand proudly behind our product, we stand behind you as well.

WINTER WARMER TIPS

After months of searing temperatures, there’s nothing better than nestling on the couch with your feet tucked up under a warm blanket, cradling a steaming and aromatic cup of tea or coffee during the chilly winter months. Being foodies, we always find winter exciting at Gourmet Meals, as it beckons in a new season of fragrant, hearty and nutritious dishes for all the family to enjoy. In our brand new Winter Menu we’ve introduced a range of delicious winter warmers, including a wholesome and comforting Beef Goulash, a decadent and creamy Salmon in Chive Sauce and an exotically fragrant Tandoori Chicken dish. We’ve also added a new dessert to our menu, which is a melt in the mouth Raspberry Panna Cotta, along with an old favourite, our popular Rhubarb and Apple Crumble. While Gourmet Meals offer a wide selection of nutritious and delicious soups and hearty meal options to keep you content through the winter months, here are some great cooking tips for you to try when you find time to whip up something new in the kitchen.

Wander to Wonder Oz

www.wandertowonderoz.com | www.instagram.com/wandertowonderoz www.facebook.com/wandertowonderoz Burdekin is the sugar capital of Australia with about 80,000 hectares dedicated to producing the sweet stuff! Located just an hour south of Townsville, the perfect time to visit is during the harvest season between June-December. The Buderkin is one of the last remaining areas in Australia where you can witness the roaring heat, thunderous crackles and huge orange flames of a traditional cane fire. We arrived on the first day of theSweet Days, Hot Nights Festival in Home Hill where they lit the first cane fire of the season which was awesome, but visit any time during harvest season and you’re bound to witness one! A fantastic outing for the little wanderers was the Ayr Nature Display. Lovingly collected and displayed by the Ay Family over 60 years, this quaint display features more than 60,000 native fauna, butterflies, shells and rocks. Daughter Lorraine now runs the show and was terrific in guiding us through the display. There was even a map of Australia made up of 3860 perfectly arranged beetles! We spent about an hour wandering around for the bargain entry price of $5 per adult and $1 per child. We stayed at Burdekin Cane Farm, a working cane farm belonging to Greg and his family who are third generation farmers. Greg was amazing, taking us on a farm tour to see cane harvesting and planting, teaching the kids about irrigation and cultivation, and sharing some sugar cane cut straight from the field! A site with power and water was just $12.50 per night. Be sure to check them out on WikiCamps.

BURDEKIN

MAGNETIC ISLAND This beautiful island affectionately known as Maggie is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and was named by Captain Cook after his ships magnetic compass that was playing up whilst near the island. We caught the Sealink ferry across from Townsville which was a comfortable 25 minute journey and cost $76 return for a family. Ferry’s run regularly from 5.30am til 11pm, meaning you have the whole day to explore. Once on the island we picked up a mean set of wheels that the little wanderers referred to as our ‘Barbie Car’. It was a novel and convenient way to travel around the island and cost $88 for the day. It’s worth noting that the hire cars can only go on sealed roads though. There are 23 pristine bays and beaches to explore on Maggie, however you’d need a boat and 4wd to access many of them. If you’re sticking to the main roads then be sure to check out Picnic Bay, Nelly Bay, Arcadia and enjoy a sunset over Horseshoe Bay. The highlight for us on this trip was The Forts Walk. The 4km walk takes you through some preserved WWII fortifications and gun emplacements and is a reminder of how close Australia came to being invaded. There are spectacular 360 degree views of the coast from the top and the chance to spot a koala!

PARONELLA PARK Josè Paronella single-handedly built his dream Spanish inspired castle from 1929-1935, spread over 5 hectares of lush tropical land beside Mena Creek Falls. It was opened to the public in 1935 and is just as magical today as it was back then. Visitors can either take a self guided walk or a 45min guided tour of the grounds where guides showcase the historic ruins and points of interest, as well as sharing Josè’s story.

As nighttime falls, Paronella Park comes alive with beautiful illumination and nocturnal natives. Be sure to jump on the hour long guided tour and witness the ruins bathed in moonlight. The little wanderers were captivated by the abundance of turtles, eels and fish in the creek and thoroughly enjoyed feeding them, so don’t forget to grab your free fish food! Admission cost for our family was $132 and is valid for 2 years. It also included a night’s powered accommodation a mere 2min stroll away which we extended for an addition night for just $20. Caravans do need to be self-contained though as there are no facilities.

Be sure to follow our adventures on Facebook, Instagram and on our website!

mobile rving For many people, making an epic road trip around the “Land Down Under” occupies a prominent spot on their bucket list. RVers, in particular, look at maps of Australia’s miles and miles of terrain, and begin to dream of hiring/renting a campervan or trailer to explore it all. Wes , founder and managing director of Caravan and Camping Hire Australia, is dedicated to making those dreams come true. The company was born on Australia Day, January 26, 2014, Wes says, and right away “went bonkers” with popularity. His company is now the country’s number one peer-to-peer caravan, camper and RV hiring community, with over 300 privately owned vehicles for hire in all of Australia’s states. “We are booking approximately 15,000 days of hires each year and this number grows all the time,” Wes says. “We project that we’ll have 1,000 owners signed up and hiring out their RVs by the end of 2019. There are enormous amounts of money to be made in the sharing economy for the Caravan/RV industry in Australia but the education process is still something that is a problem because many

owners don’t realize how safe and secure our systems are, how much work we do for them to protect them, and also how much money our existing owners are already making each year.” Wes estimates that most RVs sit unused in their owner’s driveway 90% of the time. Some members of his community are reportedly clearing up to $20,000 a year hiring out their vehicles. “We even have people buying brand new RVs just to hire them out,” he says. As a visitor to Australia, it’s easy to hop in a caravan and start cruising as if you’re back home. From coastal journeys to Outback adventures cutting through the heart of the country, a classic road trip is one of the best ways to experience the wide-open terrain and magnificent scenery of Australia. Conveniently, Caravan and Camping Hire AUS accepts international travelers from all over the world. Most have come from Europe, with just a few from the U.S. so far. Americans can use their U.S. driver's license for up to three months while

driving in Australia, and need to meet the minimum age requirement of 25 for vehicle rental. However keep in mind, you can only drive vehicles which your overseas license authorizes you to drive and you must drive in accordance with any conditions listed on your overseas license, and some states may require you to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). “All bookings go through our website and we assist the hirers all the way,” Wes says. “Hirers (YOU) pick up the vehicles from the owners’ homes or arrangements can be made to meet at airports if required. All vehicles are kitted out with everything needed. Just BYO clothing, food and money!”

Despite the country’s relatively sparse population, 25 million people in roughly 7.6 million square kilometers, Wes reports that Australia’s RV industry is massive and growing rapidly. “Australia is the sixth largest country by size in the world,” he explains. “You can spend months exploring this beautiful country and never get bored. And a motorhome is by far the best way to explore.” Traveling around their country is a favorite activity for many Australians, Wes says, and spots to camp abound. “There are caravan parks all around, plus a lot of spots where you can camp for free. Aussies like to get off the grid - get back in touch with nature.” Wes says that campgrounds, typically called holiday parks in Australia, cost anywhere from $5 to $40 per night, with each offering different amenities. The country also has more than 225 national parks dotted around the country, and many offer spots to camp. In addition, Wes’s company partners with Discovery Parks/Top Parks - Australia's largest chain of family holiday/caravan parks with 200 campgrounds and great deals all over the country. Other partners include Australia's largest and best known caravan/RV industry media and TV production company called What's Up Downunder and Parable Productions, a media and TV production company which produces four outdoor/RV lifestyle TV shows.driving in Australia, and need to meet the minimum age requirement of 25 for vehicle rental. However keep in mind, you can only drive vehicles which your overseas license authorizes you to drive and you must drive in accordance with any conditions listed on your overseas license, and some states may require you to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP).

un-spoiled Cape York at the northernmost tip of Australia; and Kakadu, known for its waterfalls - and crocodiles. Foodies can plan a trip to the Eyre Peninsula, known as Australia’s Seafood Frontier, or follow a wine trail in the Grampians. Beach lovers can drive the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, where whales can be sighted from your camper, while mountain lovers can hike the Blue Mountains, Australia’s most accessible World Heritage wilderness. Most importantly, Wes says, “do your homework. It’s important to keep in mind that it will take a little more planning than simply booking your vehicle. You’ll need to consider when you want to visit, how long you want to stay, how you’ll go driving on Australian roads, and where you’ll park your Australia campervan hire each night. Check out your route to discover what’s available for overnight stays.” Some national parks, for instance Wilsons Promontory National Park, affectionately known as “The Prom,” are so popular that campsites are distributed through a lottery system. Ask Wes where he likes to go camping himself and you’ll be inundated with suggestions. He’s owned “three or four” RVs over the years and has toured throughout the continent. Some of his favorites are familiar worldwide, such as the famous natural wonder Ayers Rock, now known by its Aboriginal name Uluru. Others are less well-known, such as the Cassowary Coast, the closest mainland point to the Great Barrier Reef; Lightning Ridge, home of the unique Black Opal;

“There’s

something for everyone here,” Wes says. “That’s my passion: Helping families explore our wonderful country.”

We founded Wilkos Marine back in 2003 after I had spent many years working for our local marine dealerships. Initially we were servicing and maintaining client’s vessels up and down the Queensland coast which kept us quite busy. We also had contracts fitting out vessels for a few local boat builders as well. During 2012 We decided to start marketing marine parts & products online. What we quickly noticed was that there was a lot of boaties that preferred to perform their own service and repair work. They were also having trouble sourcing the right parts at reasonable prices, along with a getting a little expert advice along the way. We started marketing SEI products first in 2012 and then visited SEI in the USA and took on a distributorship in early 2015. Not long after we also added API Marine Products to our line

up as well. We were attracted to both SEI & API Products as they were of excellent quality, value for money and backed by an industry leading warranty. We started with marketing their Mercruiser Stern Drive replacements and now offer a full range of alternators and starter motors along with many replacement parts for Sterndrives, Inboards and Outboards. Our product range for SEI & API is constantly expanding every month and we also have fortnightly shipments to maintain our stock levels, offer new product lines and for special orders. Steyr Engines has been one of our favourite brands since early 2006 and we have worked closely with the Steyr team on many different projects across this time. The engines are manufactured in Austria and are designed specifically for the marine

environment. Steyr was the first marine engine to ever offer a “Hybrid” propulsion system for their engine range. Steyr engines are designed to be coupled to Mercruiser & Volvo Drives along with Shaft and Jet Drives. The Australian Navy also use these engines in their ridged inflatable boats, they can also be found in many rescue boats on ships and cruise liners. They are a great option for repowering a vessel that currently have petrol or diesel engine as they have an excellent power to weight ratio, compact engines size and will couple up to most propulsion systems with ease. Not to mention their smooth quiet running and fuel efficiency. At Wilkos Marine we are here to help you get back on the water. Have a browse through our web store or if you can’t find what you need, simply give us a call or send an email.

Bait to Plate A Dogs' Life in the Winter-sundays

Winter is here, and those of us who live in the Whitsunday’s get a smug sense of self satisfaction as we watch the nightly weather reports of the freezing conditions in Southern states. Just another day in the life of a dog, and a dog like ours, who is a boaty through and through, loves this time of year, cool evenings for snuggling up and not so hot during the day that she gets stressed about needing a haircut; just great weather for lazin” around or for a good run on any beach we can get her too as well as loving taking liberties at the dinner table she does not get to at home.

If we are boaties we also keep a “weather eye” on the formation of East Coast lows off NSW or Victoria. These bring the worst of conditions to those areas but act as a block for the traditional SE trade winds which prevail over the North during these months. SE trades can blow for weeks on end, making boating uncomfortable, or at the very least restricting it to inshore areas and the lee of the Islands (which the Whitsundays are blessed with 74 of and multiple calm anchorages). One thing boaties and fisherman learn early is how to ready a synoptic chart. Those funny maps the weather

forecasters produce each night with lots of lines. While to most people these don’t mean much, to any student of the weather they are absolutely invaluable in reading future wind trends and as low-pressure systems form or sweep across South Australia heading for the East Coast we get very excited along the North Queensland Coast about some glorious winter weather on the way. So, it was last weekend, just a 2 day “window” of calm weather (while it rained and blew its head off in Melbourne).

Winter time is Mackerel time up here. It is also the last of the great mud crab season before they all head to sea to breed in August so I was a bit torn; Mackerel or crabs. We have a small boat which has already featured in recent blogs which is kind of my creek fishing/crabbing boat and a much larger centre console vessel which I fish the reefs and oceans with. It is a pretty big boat to tow and way to big to get up into the creeks I like to crab in but the little inflatable tender is always an option for this so we took the reef boat in tow, managed a couple of lovely Spanish mackerel and got some fantastic big buck mud crabs from a favourite little crabbing creek in double bay, just to the north of Airlie Beach. Any of the islands to the north fish well for mackerel this time of year and concentrate on the current lines and rips. Live baits like fusiliers are great but trolling wolf herrings (Ribbon Fish) or gar will also work. Any of the local tackle shops will give you tips on rigs, baits and best spots with all of them run by top blokes and keen fishos. After knocking up a pizza for dinner on the boat it is home time now with the SE trades blowing 20 knots plus and either some Cajun spiced mackerel of black pepper crab for dinner. Decisions, decisions.

Common Solar and Battery Myths Busted An article from Australia’s leading supplier of 12V batteries and solar products Myths have always been around, ranging from sacred cultural narratives to traditional stories and popular misunderstandings. Even in the world of solar and batteries, myths still exist and are believed to be true. Let’s bust some of the most common solar and battery myths today.

Batteries Myth: Batteries will discharge when placed or stored on a concrete floor This common belief results from an ancient fact. The first batteries were made of glass cells enclosed in wooden boxes, and placing them on a concrete floor would cause the wood to swell and damage the battery cells. Later, those boxes were replaced by porous rubber consisting of carbon. When these batteries were stored on a concrete floor, the combination of the carbon and concrete could create an electrical current between the cells causing the battery to discharge. However, modern batteries are made from harder materials, such as polypropylene, and seal better. Therefore, you do not need to worry about placing your batteries on a concrete floor. In fact, these days it is recommended to store them as such. Not only are ground temperatures cooler, concrete also provides an extra thermal mass protecting them against any temperature shifts in the battery.

Myth: Storing my deep cycle batteries for a short time will discharge them All batteries self-discharge, however storing deep cycle batteries for a short time will only lead to a small discharge amount (eg. an AGM might lose 1-3 percent over a month). The rate of their self-discharge depends on the temperature they’re exposed to: the higher the temperature, the faster your battery will selfdischarge. When storing your AGM batteries at 25°C, a freshening charge is recommended after approximately six months.

Myth: AGM deep cycle batteries need to be drained before charging them This belief results from the battery memory effect which occurs in nickel cadmium (NiCd) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries. The term ‘battery memory’ refers to the steady loss of maximum energy capacity whenever a battery is being charged after a partial discharge; the battery only remembers the smaller capacity. In other words, batteries with a battery memory should be drained completely on a regular basis to maintain their full capacity. However, AGM batteries do not have a battery memory and as such it is not necessary to drain them. In fact, the less you drain the battery each time before recharging, the longer the battery will last.

Solar Panels Myth: Solar panels don’t work on partly cloudy days Although typically solar panels generate more electricity on sunny days and with direct sunlight, they still operate efficiently when the weather is less fortunate. Generally, solar panels can produce approximately 10 to 25 percent of their normal capacity on cloudy days, depending on the type of solar. On partly cloudy days, solar can be affected by a phenomenon known as ‘the edge of cloud effect’. This term refers to the sunlight being magnified by the edges of the clouds which can result in a temporary boost of the solar system’s power output, busting this myth. In case you’re still not convinced, have you ever spent a day outside on partly cloudy weather thinking you wouldn’t get sunburned? This ultraviolet light – which solar panels can use to produce electricity – is still able to reach us through the clouds.

Myth: Solar panels require high maintenance Generally, it is suggested to hose off the panels approximately once a year, and to ensure surrounding trees are cut back to prevent the solar panels from being overshadowed. Also, check there are no leaves, or bird droppings covering the panels as these may impact the amount of sunlight reaching your panels. Solar panels mounted to the ground may accumulate more dirt and dust, and may need more maintenance than other panels. To clean your panels, you can use: warm water, some non-abrasive liquid, Windex, a brush, or a high pressure hose. Basically, it’s the same method as cleaning your windows. If you prefer, you can also contact specialist window cleaning companies to clean your panels for you.

Myth: Monocrystalline solar cells are better than polycrystalline solar cells Monocrystalline solar cells have been superior for many years due to their higher peak efficiency and their availability. However, stating monocrystalline solar cells are better than polycrystalline is incorrect. Let’s briefly compare both types of cells. According to some, monocrystalline solar cells have a more aesthetic appearance due to their black cells. Typically, one square meter will generate approximately 190W which makes the panels slightly smaller than polycrystalline panels. Monocrystalline cells operate well (and often better than polycrystalline cells) under perfect weather conditions: during clear, sunny days. Polycrystalline solar cells have a blue colour with some patches that are lighter than others (due to multiple crystals). They also have better performance on days with less sunlight and higher temperatures. With their multiple crystals, polycrystalline cells can produce more electricity as sunlight is reflected within the crystals. One square meter of polycrystalline cells generates about 180W which results in a slightly bigger panel compared to monocrystalline cells.

TEAM TAYLOR AND THEIR FIN

KE DESERT RA CE PURSUIT

The Finke Desert Race is an iconic Off Road two day race that spans over some of the most rugged country in the Northern Territory. A series of Off Road Buggies, trucks, UTV, cars and bikes race at top speeds on one of the most difficult terrains to the small aboriginal community called "Finke". All fighting for a place whilst others just aim to finish. Team Taylor have been competing in this Race for over 15 years and this year Ryan Taylor, competed for his 7th Year in a Pro Class Buggy called "The Tatum #2", while Dad Nev and brother Michael were in charge of the pit crew. We set out on an adventure one Saturday afternoon to take the drive from the Sunshine Coast to Alice Springs for this race. Bags packed and the Kimberley Kamper all decked out, the skies were our limit. We made several stops on the way, pulling up where ever we wanted due to the "KK" being 100% Off Road. With Nev and Annette travelling with us in their full self-contained motorhome.

We arrived in Alice Springs on Thursday afternoon and headed straight out to a friend's property to test the Buggy one final time before prologue on Saturday morning. Unfortunately the test drive, proved to be effective as we discovered a leak in the radiator. Friday was spent repairing the radiator with the combined help of the race team and local business's in Alice Springs. At these races there is never a shortage of community help from competitors as well as other families involved in the sport.

Saturday morning brings promise as Team Taylor, Buggy #24 rolls up to the start line for prologue. Out of the 120+ car entries Ryan will start the Race down to Finke in 32nd Position. Sunday is Race day and the line-up of cars are nothing short of extraordinary. As the cars speed off from the start line, Team Taylor makes it way closer to beginning its 7th year of the Tattes Finke Desert Race 2018.

Go! Team Taylor are away and make a fast and calculated race down. With passing several cars and fighting the dust all the way to Finke, Ryan and navigator Foz make it to each check point and the final check point they have had a fast clean run and are currently positioned in 8th Position.

Team Taylor managed to gain 24 positions in the race down to Finke, a great success for the first day. Monday - Rise and Shine it is race day again and an early start it is, leaving the start line for the leg home in 8th position. As we get reports of check points, it's the last final check point that the crew from Team Taylor hear the hard news of a broken bolt to the front steering arm resulting unfortunately in a DNF for the boys.

Approximately 80km from the finish line and an estimated position of 5th overall, it's a disappointing result for all involved in Team Taylor. However with many races and years racing under their belt they are all too familiar with the ups and downs of motorsport.

Racing Finke, heading away on a road trip with family, seeing many sites including Uluru, having a fantastic time away, an epic adventure, amazing memories and friendships made, how does that one not go down to being a big win in life and another tick off the bucket list.

CARAVAN ELECTRICAL SAFETY As a NSW licensed sparky, I get quite concerned when inexperience and electricity is allowed to mix. Electricity is our friend, it keeps our beers cold, out bodies warm, and allows us to see when it would otherwise be dark! But electricity has a very nasty split personality, and can kill indiscriminately within milliseconds. The most common post I see in most facebook groups and forums is someone asking how to plug their caravan in at home, which is often followed up by inappropriate and illegal suggestions. I'd like to set a few things straight, and offer some options in this article !

If your not sure then get professional advice from a reputable and licenced electrician

Intent

The most common justification for illegally modifying an extension lead or having one made is that the owner only intends to run small loads. The rules and regulations don't care about the intent of one individual, they deal with what something can be used for. There is nothing to stop someone using that lead to plug a high current device into a standard outlet. The best case result could be nuisance tripping, worst case fire. 10A outlets are rated for 10A appliances, anything more is simply playing russian roulette.

Plug & socket system We have a pretty good system in Australia of matching the potential current draw of an appliance to the supply capability, including a wide range of plugs (10A, 15A, 20A, 25A, 32A). Any plug will fit into any socket of an identical or higher rating, but not vice versa. Caravans use a 15A outlet to comply with a lesser known standard, AS/NZS-3001, which deals with portable and relocatable premises and their associated supplies. Caravan parks are required to comply with this standard as well, which is why their pillars should all have 15A sockets on them. Never vans have a 16A circuit breaker on their internal switchboard to match the rating of the inlet. This is not suitable when drawing off a 10A supply.

10A to 15A adapters There are now a few legal adapters on the market, and they all share one thing in common. They all have internal 10A overload and 30mA safety protection. The overload protection will prevent your 15A capable equipment from drawing more power than the 10A outlet can safely deliver. The 30mA safety protection will protect you and other persons in the event of a fault that could kill or injure. This is particularly important with older vans that may not have it built in, or older houses that may still be using rewireable fuses. They do vary in prices and IP rating.IP rating - Also known as Ingress Protection is a system of classifying how resistant a device is to water and dust ingress. Essentially the higher the numbers the better the rating. A device with a lower number (eg IP33) is suitable for indoor use only. A device with a higher number (eg IP67) is suitable for outdoor use. The devices will generally be constructed from a UV stabalised polycarbonate plastic, which means they can withstand exposure to the sun.

Ampfibian Indoor model, IP33 http://www.campsmart.net.au/ampfibian-mini-15a-to-10a-rcd-adapt er This is the cheaper Ampfibian, it is suitable for indoor use only and I imagine the most popular due to it's relatively low price. Plug this into a powerpoint in your garage then run your regular 15A lead to your van.

Outdoor model, IP55 http://www.campsmart.net.au/ampfibian-rv02-max-15a-to-10a-ada pter-with-rcd-pro This is the premium model with weather resistance on the outlet side as well. Ideal if you have an external power point near your van. This model is rated for commercial use, so you know it will take some abuse. Ampfibian also have a new model on the way designed especially for caravaning applications that will be around the $140 mark.

Getting a 15A circuit installed If you're van is normally parked near your switchboard, getting a sparky to install a 15A outlet is a good option. You will have a safe, reliable supply that will match that provided by a caravan park. Cost of installation should typically be $120-150, or even less if you can bundle other electrical work with them. Of course a sparky can put a 15A outlet virtually anywhere, but the cost may be higher. As with any trade get a few quotes and go with the one you are happiest with. Some final notes If you use a generator or inverter with a 10A outlet to supply your van, the legal adapters can still be used, and the overload will still operate when necessary. However the safety switch will likely not work. This is no cause for concern as the nature of these supplies has its own inherent safety in the form of having no earth reference.

Tagging of leads It is a WorkCover requirement of caravan parks that all equipment they own must be regularly tested and tagged. This requirement doesn't specifically extend to customers' leads, however some parks do have it as a condition of entry. Tagging is relatively cheap, and offers peace of mind that your equipment won't be a hazard to other campers. No one wants an electrocution to be a conversation starter! So if the park requests it, and you could ask this when booking, it may save you being plunged into darkness one night

COULD BLOCKCHAIN SMART CONTRACTS SPELL THE END OF CONTRACT LAWYERS AND WRITERS? What are smart contracts and how do they work? Smart contracts are self-executing agreements. Using codes, the terms and conditions of an agreement are input so that a smart contract automatically executes the action of “when this happens do this”. Coding simplifies a lot of the jargon found in long contracts, where language, interpretation and clauses can be at the center of controversy between two parties. It cuts through the fluff to the source of an agreement.

information. In the healthcare sector for example your medical records can be encoded and stored on the blockchain with a key that only enables select individuals to access them. If you need to undergo surgery or if insurance companies require proof of receipt or your medical data, then that can be sent verifiably directly to them. The transfer of information can be used in a range of compliance, management, security and even government record-maintenance applications. Advantages: Autonomy: No need for a middleman and no risk of third-party manipulation or bias. You are in control of what terms you agree to. Cheap: Removing the middleman, especially in the fields of law and banking means you save a lot of money. The transfer of digital assets may incur small mining fees, but these are only a few dollars in comparison to potentially tens of thousands charged by other types of middlemen.

Source:https://coin5s.com/content/how-smart-contracts-work-0

What are the main applications? The exchange of goods: As shown in the diagram above, the exchange of goods can be made seamless with smart contracts. This effects dozens of sectors including real-estate, retail and automobile. The exchange of information: Smart contracts are also not limited to physical goods or digital assets, they can also be used to store and send

Transparency: Due to the decentralised nature of smart contracts, information is encoded on the blockchain and thus shared on a public ledger. Neither party can “lose” the contract, nor attempt to blur or lie

Facebook.com/letsdisrupttheworldrogether Twitter @getplaakingnow

about the terms of agreement. Security: Blockchain data cannot be corrupted or manipulated, so the smart contract information is safe. Timesaving: Not only does the contract take very little time to initiate, but because it is self-executing you don’t have to sit around making sure that actions are being completed. Reach: Anywhere there is access to the internet means a smart contract can be coded up. Are there any downsides? Even though simplicity is great, sometimes it isn’t preferable or feasible. Some agreements can be complex and reflecting that in code is hard. There is also the issue of enforcement. Since the automatic execution of the contract relies on the two parties to meet the obligations of the contract, if disputes did occur there is currently no sufficient “intermediary” assistance. Could this spell the end of contract lawyers and writers? Smart contracts are not perfect, but for many basic contract needs, they could largely replace the need for a formal (and usually expensive) middleman. While it won’t take away all jobs in the contract sector, there will be a gradual decline in the need to hire “conventional” lawyers and contract writers. Their job specs may even shift to include the intermediary assistance, drafting, and future law enforcement of smart contracts.

You’ve got a friend in me Doing a lap, a road trip, taking a few months, weeks or just a bit of a break to explore this amazing country is an incredible opportunity. There are so many places to explore and amazing experiences to have, you could keep going your entire life and still not see everything. However, there is something else that has been completely unexpected for me. Something that, I think, has that has been one of the best things about the lifestyle as a ‘travelling family’, or collectively known as ‘TAWK’ families (travelling Australia with kids), and that’s the incredible friends and bonds that are formed. There are now huge numbers of families who have packed up their lives for a nomadic lifestyle. You just have to jump onto any social media platform to see all the incredible photographic evidence. And its through these platforms too that many people connect.

It’s not unusual to pull into a town or region and already know of several families who are camped nearby, and those you don’t already know, your children will ensure you know by nightfall. There is a theory that as an adult its difficult to make new friends, not so when you are on the road. Most people are out for the same reason, to explore and to make memories. But its not just other families that we, and most other families connect with. The other over represented travelers around the country are of course, the grey nomads. In the two and a half years that we have been ‘on the road’ our children have collected multiple set of pseudo grandparents who adore our children and continue to keep in touch with them. I have loved watching these relationships develop over simple things like feeding birds, or watching a sunset together. And of course the time we spend on work stops in various places means that we also have opportunities to connect with locals. I can honestly say that some of my now closest friends are those that I have met since we’ve been travelling. The single hardest thing about forming these bonds, is the inevitable good-byes as someone moves on with their travels.

But then its never really good-bye, it’s just see ya later.

F.A.Q'S about the Trail-A-Mate

1

Can Trail-A-Mate be fitted to my caravan? Yes, Trail-A-Mate has been designed specifically to fit caravans, trailers and horse floats into the existing jockey wheel clamp.

2

Can the brackets for the jacking point be fitted to my caravan or trailer? Yes, almost all caravans built over recent years have a cross- member at the rear of the axles strong enough to accommodate the brackets, which must be welded on. However, over the last couple of years, the majority of caravan manufacturers have fitted the brackets which create the jacking points for Trail-A-Mate as standard equipment.

3

If I purchase a Trail-A-Mate, do I need to buy a separate jack? No, the Trail-A-Mate is designed to be used as both a jockey-wheel and a jack, minimizing the need to carry unnecessary equipment on holidays with you.

4

Will Trail-A-Mate lift my six metre caravan? Yes, Trail-A-Mate will lift a six metre caravan high enough so you change both wheels on one side of the caravan at once should you have to. However, it is recommended should you have to change both wheels together, the caravan should be supported using appropriate vehicle support stands.

233 Shepherds Hill Road Eden Hills SA 5050

5 6

My six metre caravan has an aggregated mass (ATM) of 2,900kg, can I still use the Trail-A-Mate? Yes, Trail-A-Mate has a Working Load Limit of 1000kg. When you are jacking the caravan using the Trail-A-Mate, you are not lifting the entire weight of the caravan, you are lifting approximately 1/3 or less of the vehicle weight at each of the jacking points. If your trailer has an ATM greater than 2,900kg you will need the Trail-A-Mate MkII. If I get a flat tyre, will I still have to climb underneath the caravan to jack it up? No, Trail-A-Mate is designed so that it is operated from a standing position, using a minimum amount of effort, preventing you from having to climb underneath your van, making it not only easier, but a much safer option.

7

How high will my Trail-A-Mate lift fully extended? The Trail-A-Mate has the capacity with the base plate fitted, to lift from as low 6 inches (150mm) above the ground to a height of 20 inches (500mm) in one straight lift.

8

I have limited mechanical knowledge, what happens if something goes wrong with my Trail-A-Mate? Trail-A-Mate has been designed so that even a person with a very limited knowledge of hydraulics could repair the unit by following some very basic instructions,

Can I Attach Guttering? Every Shade Shed is designed with a 75mm overhanging roof, so it’s simple and straight forward to attach a guttering kit. The ridges on the roof run from front to back, so the rain will run either off the front or the back of the Shed (depending on construction method). Can I Enclose it? Shade Sheds are engineered to only have 2 sides enclosed to maintain the appropriate wind or cyclone rating. If you require the sides of the shade shed to be enclosed inform your sales representative and you can be quoted for additional wall sheeting. Do I Need Council Approval? All Transportable Shade Shed products come complete with an engineered set of plans which can be used for council approval. Our products are designed with the features to allow the sheds to be a transportable unit, however it is the customer’s responsibility to apply for council approval. Do we deliver Australia Wide? Transportable Shade Sheds have stock depots throughout Australia. We transport our sheds to most areas ensuring our product arrives to the customer in the same condition as leaving the depot. We also provide very competitive freight cost along our delivery route. Call 1300 667 433 to discuss freight timeframes and cost. Does it Come with a Warranty? Transportable Shade Sheds is a registered Queensland Building Services Authority (BSA) member. Every product manufactured by Transportable Shade Sheds comes with a 10 year structural warranty and a 10 year warranty on the Colorbond Steel.

Whether you've got a shiny new caravan fresh from the showroom floor or a "new to you" version from a previously loving owner, one of the first joys of caravan ownership is to stuff it full of your stuff in preparation to hit to open road. This is what we did with our new to us 21ft Crusader and that unstructured, unthought out approach to packing caused us more than a few headaches. You see most modern-ish caravans have tonnes of space; they are filled with tonnes of nooks, crannies and hidey-holes where you can stick your stuff. The problem arises when you either don't take notice of how much stuff you're putting into these spaces or you just don't care. That's what we did before our "big lap" starting in late 2015; every time we found a new nook or cranny, we'd rejoice that we could take something else and we'd fill it.

By the time we were through, we'd managed to find enough nooks and crannies to overpack our caravan by 700kgs. No this isn't a misprint, that last zero is legimate. The day we left for our trip and went across a weighbridge "just as a precaution" and found that we were a little over 700kgs beyond our caravan's legal payload or ATM. If this term isn't familiar to you a brief explanation and of this and other weight related terms is below. Exceeding your payload is bad for a few reasons. Firstly, while I can't vouch for this firsthand, you do hear that in the event of an accident an insurance company could refuse to payout a claim if they can prove

you had exceeded your payload. Thinking about this, it's probably a fair call given the excess weight may have contributed to the accident in some part anyway. Another reason is that you'd be breaking the law. Again it's probably an urban legend, but you do hear of Police targetting caravanners with mobile weighbridges and if you get caught a hefty fine is likely to ensue. With a typical payload on a new caravan being around 400kg, it's likely that many of us are overweight. In a modern van it's not uncommon to have 2 x 85 - 100 litre water tanks onboard and if they're full, that's the better part of 200kgs or half your legal payload!

Another common oversight is any after-market purchases or add-ons you buy. Think solar panels, inverter, extra/bigger batteries, extra gas tank, TV, microwave, heater, satellite dish, slide out kitchen/BBQ, bike racks, toolbox, generator, the list goes on. If you haven't purchased these from the manufacturer they are likely to be eating into your legal payload. Sometimes they eat into your payload even if you did get them from the manufacturer! Finally, and this really should be the first reason, it's probably dangerous. If you over pack your caravan you could effect it's suspension capabiliities, the way it travels on the road, how your car tows it and even whether your car can legally tow it. All this being said, I think we'd all agree it's best to abide by what the manafacturer's specify as safe. That's all contained on your caravan's compliance plate and a list of commonly found terms/acronyms you'll find on that plate are listed below. TARE This is the mass of your caravan or car as specified by the manufacturer, with no payload. GTM (GROSS TRAILER MASS) GTM is the weight of the fully loaded trailer imposed on the trailer’s axle when it is coupled to the tow vehicle.

ATM (AGGREGATE TRAILER MASS) ATM is the combined weight of the trailer and its full load when it is not coupled to a tow vehicle ACM (AGGREGATE COMBINED MASS) GCM is the maximum allowable weight of the trailer, tow vehicle and the load (including passengers) in the tow vehicle and trailer. TBM (TOW BALL MASS) TBM is the mass exerted on the tow ball by your fully packed caravan. When your caravan is hitched, this mass is included in your tow vehicle’s payload. So now you know the risks of overpacking, there are a couple of simple, pain-free ways to avoid it.

Pack Well/Smart - I'd personally get a pre-pack weight whether the caravan is new or secondhand, but that's your choice. I'd most certainly get a pre-pack weight if the van is secondhand though as it gives you a legally-binding starting point. From there you need to weigh everything that you pack right down to your socks and jocks. It's pretty simple, but it can be disheartening too. Stuff you love and think you need seems to weigh way more than you think. You will need to be realistic about what you will actually need and consider alternatives if your must-have item is heavy or it's marginal as to whether you'll use it or not. Replate Your Van: At 400 odd kilos, payloads on modern caravans are pretty lean in my opinion, especially if you're travelling with more than two people. We're a sporty, outdoorsy family of 4 and we genuinely struggled to accomodate our lifestyle choices on the trip, well legally anyway. There is hope though. If there is a gap between your caravan's suspension rating and ATM, you could get the compliance plate changed to reflect the suspension rating as your ATM. Contact your caravan's manufacturer or an independant certifiier to discuss. Incidentally, we did get our caravan replated

by the manufacturer and it made a huge difference. It was a simple process and we instantly gained 250kg of payload, which made travelling with 2 active school-age children much easier. Even if you only got an extra 100kg, it's the difference between being able to fill a water tank and not and that's worth it in my opinion, especially for remote/off-the-beaten-track/free-camping types that many of us seem to be these days. DISCLAIMER - these are personal thoughts and recollections of a caravan owner and not of a professional in any of the topics covered. Any concepts discussed within the article are an opinion only and should be thoroughly researched and professional consultation be sort, especially where the impact of not doing so could result in a negative outcome for yourself or a 3rd party.
