T RANSITING T HE S HINNECOCK C ANAL

By Capt. John N. Raguso The Shinnecock Canal is a narrow, man-made waterway that cuts across the South Fork of Long Island at Hampton Bays, New York. Measuring approximately 4,700 feet long and 100-to-150 feet wide, it connects Great Peconic Bay and the north fork of Long Island with Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean via Shinnecock Inlet, situated approximately 2-1/2 nautical miles SSW of the canal’s southern terminus. The canal is a huge time-saver when trying to get from the Peconics to the Atlantic and south shore areas and it’s a great scenic trip on your boat for you and the family. During a summertime weekend, the Shinnecock Canal can remind you of the LIE during weekday rush hour, so be advised and travel early in the day when possible.

History Lesson According to the good folks at Wikipedia, the original Shinnecock Canal project started way back in 1892. Its purpose at that time was to alleviate tidal differences of 3-feet or more between Peconic Bay to the north (where it was higher) and Shinnecock Bay to the south (where it was lower).

Construction of "tide gates" and bulkheading began in 1918 and the lock system was done in 1919. This did not alleviate the difference in elevation between the canal's two ends but sought to mitigate it. Two byproducts of the canal’s creation were that the water level of Shinnecock Bay was raised by one foot and its salinity was greatly improved, making a positive impact on the shellfish population.

The canal varies in width from 100 to 180-feet. The lock is 41-feet wide and 250-feet long and will accommodate just about any type of vessel that will fit in its rectangular box. The lowest bridge is the fixed LIRR railroad bridge south of the lock, with a height of 22-feet vertical clearance above the water. The highway bridges (Sunrise Highway to the north of the lock and Montauk highway to the south) have 25-feet and 23-feet of vertical clearance respectively. The Shinnecock Canal lock system is the only navigation lock operating on Long Island. The lock increased the salinity levels in Shinnecock Bay, which had nearly assumed fresh water proportions and resulted in reducing its shellfish population, even though it was separated from the Atlantic by a narrow barrier island. Shinnecock Bay's salinity levels were solidified during Great Hurricane of 1938, which broke through the barrier island to form Shinnecock Inlet almost due south of the canal. The new inlet has created a short cut to the Atlantic from the north fork and Peconic Bay that is now used by over 27,000 boats per year.

Making the Journey There are times when Making the relatively short journey through the Shinnecock Canal can be like a mindless stroll in the park…and there are those times when it’s both hands on the wheel and hold on tight for a white knuckle ride that will rival a white water rapids experience. You’ll know that you are in for a wild ride when approaching the canal from south-to-north near the Southampton Prime Marina (the old Jackson’s Marina) and it feels like you are going upstream into a steady flow, going nowhere. As you approach the Montauk Highway and LIRR railroad bridges, you will experience a series of vortexes and whirlpools that will literally grab your boat and shift it sideways without warning, so keep a safe maneuvering space between you and the boats around you. When heading north-to-south, you are going with the flow and may not have as much control over your vessel as you think.

Lock Open/Lock Closed A good rule of thumb for determining when the lock and tidal gates will be open or closed can be based on the tide tables. The driving force of nature that controls the opening and closing of the trio of tidal gates is the high tide and ebb flow in both Shinnecock and Peconic Bays. As the water builds up on a rising/incoming flow in Shinnecock Bay, it forces the tidal gates shut for a period of approximately six hours. It is during this period of closure that the lock will allow boat passage through the canal by raising or lowering the water level inside its sealed rectangular box by 3-to-4 feet. On the flip side, when Peconic Bay reaches its high tide and the water starts to ebb, it forces the three tidal gates to open for an equal amount of time(6-hours) and the lock will remain in the open position. Passage southbound from Peconic Bay to Shinnecock Bay is via the three narrow gates, located on the center and west side of the ditch. Passage north into the current flow is via the open lock on the east side of the canal and it can be a total hoot driving your vessel into a raging 4-to-6 knot current through that “extremely tight” 41-foot wide passageway, with 2-to-3 foot waves bouncing back and forth across the sidewalls creating a confused mess of water that has no pattern.

The flow of water when the gates are open is always north-to-south.

To calculate the time that the gates will be open or closed, access a tide table for that day and select the high tide time under the Sandy Hook portion of the graph. Subtract 3-1/2 hours from the time that is indicated for high tide and you should have the time that the gates will be closed. To determine when the gates will reopen, add 2-1/2 hours to the high tide time for that day. The tidal gates should be open from this moment and going forward for about six-hours.

Rules of the Road Like any other body of water or high-traffic area, there are certain protocols or “rules of the road” to follow when transiting the Shinnecock Canal. Here’s a brief summary: • When approaching the lock, boaters should stop at a safe distance and follow specified traffic signals (red/green) • Red Light- vessel must hold position and wait • Green Light- lock is ready and vessel may advance • No Light- vessel must not proceed and wait for signal • When entering the lock chamber, your vessel must proceed under control at a safe reduced speed • When inside of the lock, follow directions of the lock operator and tie off with the appropriate fenders and mooring lines • When exiting the lock, proceed at a safe speed and observe local posted speed limits

Shinnecock Canal- Fast Facts & Specs Summary The lock is open 24 hours a day. However, based on prevailing tide conditions, the lock and three tidal gates may either be open for up to six hours, or closed for an equal time period. The single lock can be mechanically opened by the lock operator via lock system in either direction for intervals of 10-15 minutes at a time. The lock operator controls all movement of boats through the lock by light signals or horn devices.
