This custom spotlight for the summer edition focuses on a great loyal Powerline Genetics customer, the Bortner Ranch. Heath and Jessica Bortner, along with their son Charie run a diversified farm and ranching operation northwest of McCook, Neb. where they are heavily involved in the local community and avid cow horse competitors.

The Bortners have been staunch bull customers over the past decade. They have an impressive bull battery that is focused on added growth and strong API’s and TI’s to amp up a stellar herd of Angus based cows. Additionally, the Bornters feed out their calves at NA Timmerman, gaining insight to the full genetic potential of their herd. The top end of low percent SimAngus females are retained.

“We have found Powerline’s Simmental cross bulls have enhanced our feed efficiency, quality and overall power/marketability of our calves. In addition to the bulls and genetics, the Powerline Team’s commitment in assisting in all areas, from bull selection to marketing decisions are a valued resource. They truly commit “From Pasture to Plate”. We trust the Powerline Program.”

One of the fastest ways for seedstock producers to make genetic change is through the utilization of an embryo program. It enables the breeder to not only sample curve bending sires, but also generate numberous offspring from elite females who in a normal setting would only produce one calf a year.

As we continue to grow and strengthen the program, there will be an increase in the number of embryo transfer bulls being offered. Our multipliers have been working diligently to identify superior cows within their herds to place in the “donor pen.” Noteable females include JHW 802U, the mother of our all time high selling bull, Power Ball 228, and “Ruby” the young donor in the Meyring/ SS partnership who is the mother of Kingpin, pictured on the opposite page. This coming sale season will also feature the first sons of some exciting new donors including Art Lienemann’s Jodie cow that is an S A V Resource daughter. Look for her half blood progeny to sell on the 2024 January sale!

We will continue building the maternal side for our bulls because behind every great herd sire is an exceptional female.

Our customers say it best.

“We have been purchasing Powerline Genetics for over 10 years, and we keep coming back. PLG bulls are mild mannered and easy to handle both horseback and on the ground. They throw calves that gain! We are pleased with the calves from the moment they hit the ground to the moment they step on the truck and once they hit the bunk...they never look back.”

“We don’t pamper the yearling bulls. They have come through the first winter in good shape and have had excellent fertility checks...I like the way the numbers are presented in the catalog so I can sort bulls with the traits I am looking for.”

“We have used Powerline bulls almost as long as J.D. has been in the business. They calve easy and do a great job growing.”

-

“When we buy bulls we look at birthweight, weaning weight, feet, and fertility. We keep our own replacements so the bulls we select have a lasting impact on our herd. Our cows run at 10,000 feet. Their advantages through hybrid vigor make them adaptable, all the while raising calves that grow and perform in tough environments.”
