SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIPS

THE IOLA STOOPS JUAREZ ENDOWED JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP Created to assist in the education of an undergraduate journalism student who is employed at the Vidette. Strength, dignity, beauty and grace are words that have been used to describe Iola. Her family wishes to remember the university she so dearly loved, and which helped foster these characteristics in Iola. Her service to her family, neighbors, country and to God will always be remembered by those who loved her. It is the hope of her family that all who benefit from this scholarship will also lead rich and full lives of service to others. THE PANTAGRAPH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP This Journalism scholarship provides educational support to students preparing for professional work as journalists or in the area of mass communication. Jesse Fell founded the Pantagraph on January 14, 1837, a full 10 years before the Chicago Tribune was conceived. Originally called The Bloomington Observer and McLean County Advocate, the newspaper went through seven names that led to the final change in 1985 to the Pantagraph. The editorial motto, “Independent in Everything, Neutral in Nothing,” has helped the Pantagraph weather more than a century and a half and remain the sole survivor of more than 150 papers that had at some time or another started publication in Bloomington.

THE MARTIN F. DUFFY SCHOLARSHIP To memorialize their friend and colleague, employees at USG Corporation, along with members of Marty’s family, established this journalism scholarship to aide a student in the School of Communication. “Marty was a key member of our communications team and friend to many. He was well respected not only for his communication skills, but as somebody who always made time for others. We will miss his enthusiasm for life, his laughter, and his positive spirit,” said Marci Kaminsky, USG’s Vice President, Communications. THE RANDY SALERNO ENDOWED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This Broadcast Journalism scholarship was made possible by a gift from the Randy Salerno Foundation and alumni, faculty, and friends who knew and appreciated Randy’s dedication to excellence in broadcast journalism. Randy was an award-winning reporter and anchor at WGN-TV and CBS2 in Chicago. He was smart and sarcastic and wickedly funny. He always drew a crowd; wherever he went, people wanted to be near him. THE MAYOR JUDY SCHOLARSHIP In 1986, Judy Markowitz made a major financial commitment to ISU to establish a fund to assist students in the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Communication who major in public relations. Markowitz is the former mayor of Bloomington, as well as the former community relations director at Radio Bloomington. Income from the endowment fund is to be used toward tuition and academic expenses. THE VICKI LYNN KELLEY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP The Vicki Lynn Kelley Endowed Scholarship supports undergraduate students in the School of Communication studying communication with a preference given to those pursuing careers in radio Journalism. Vicki’s infectious laugh and comic perspectives on life were embraced by thousands of people around the country who listened to her daily broadcasts from the Wall Street Journal radio in the Big Apple. Stories about her adventures in New York and growing up on the family farm in Central Illinois forged an affectionate bond that was revealed through an outpouring of cards and well wishes following the news of her illness. It was a bond best understood by Vicki’s family and friends. Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, she always said, “there’s no place like home,” and home was where her heart was. THE DORIS DUNGEY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship supports undergraduate students in the School of Communication studying in Journalism. Doris Dungey, was known as “Tanta” to her family, friends, and readers. Tanta spent most of her life working as a mortgage banker, while her true passion was writing. She always did so with humor, a passion for delving into the details, an understanding of people, a strong sense of human decency and an instantly recognizable style filled with spirit, insight, and literary allusions, which continues to attract, inform and entertain readers from a wide variety of backgrounds. She enjoyed interacting with her readers and was a generous teacher, touching many lives through her work.

THE EDWARDS MEDAL SPEECH CONTEST Based on a gift from Richard Edwards, this scholarship assists students in the School of Communication who have made a large contribution as a participant and a leader to the forensic program. THE LLOYD & MARY WATKINS ENDOWED COMMUNICATION STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP The Lloyd and Mary Watkins fund was originally established in 1988 by a gift from Champion Federal Savings and Loan, headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois to honor former President and First Lady, Lloyd and Mary Watkins. At the request of Dr. Watkins, the purpose of the fund was changed to support scholarships in the School of Communication. THE ILLINOIS BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was created by the Illinois Broadcasters Association in recognition of the excellent education offered by the School of Communication at Illinois State University. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize those students who seek a career in media management, sales and promotion broadcasting. THE MARVIN D. KLEINAU ENDOWMENT IN FORENSICS The Marvin D. Kleinau Endowment in Forensics supports students involved with forensics. Dr. Marvin D. Kleinau recognized the need for forensics teams to receive more sufficient funding for travel and tournament hosting and this scholarship is to be put towards those needs. The award was created by Dr. Kleinau in 2006, in gratitude for the life changing instruction given at the time of his undergraduate experience, by the department chair and debate coach, Dr. Ralph A. Micken, and the generous support of the Department of Communication speech faculty for forensic activity. The purpose of the fund is to provide financial support for students engaged in nationally competitive speech and debate activities as representatives of Illinois Sate University. Income available may be used to defray expenses related to education, travel, and/or other costs associated with participation in the Forensics Program at Illinois State University. THE DR. JOHN BALDWIN LEADERSHIP ENDOWED AWARD The Dr. John Baldwin Leadership Award celebrates the faculty of Illinois State University and specifically, the School of Communication. The award honors Dr. John Baldwin, a professor in the School of Communication, who like many of his colleagues, teaches students the value of scholarship and charity in service to the university community. The award recognizes student leaders who demonstrate a similar commitment to the university, their peers, and their own education. THE HARRY & JO THIEL “RED LINE” SCHOLARSHIP The Harry and Jo Thiel “Red Line” Scholarship is in honor of Harry Thiel, The Vidette general manager from 1976 to 1996, and his wife Jo, who together guided countless Vidette staffers in journalism and life. Harry and Jo both passed away in 2014. The “Red Line” refers to the enduring and endearing red pen Harry used to provide journalistic tutelage to all Vidette staffers who served during his extremely influential ISU career. Harry’s red pen was a teaching tool as valuable as any other to Vidette journalists. This scholarship is awarded annually to a current Vidette staff member in good financial and academic standing with ISU.
