SMALL BAND PUTS ON ELECTRIC PERFORMANCES The first thing you’re sure to notice is the costumes. But after awhile, you realize: Chasca is a damned good band. There are countless words that could describe Chasca. Their website is headlined as “Glam rock meets Rocky Horror.” Their shows and their sound are bombastic, their costumes are outlandish and even garish, but the best description of their unique mix of pageantry and rock ‘n’ roll is short and to the point: fearless. These Texas natives have made it their business to make sure that when you leave their show, not only have you been rocked, you’ve been entertained in a way that few bands even attempt. Lead singer JT

Martin’s energy is infectious as he struts around the stage, taking flute solos where appropriate, and making performances at local venues feel more like a packed stadium than the stage of a nearby bar. Martin gets to the heart of what makes Chasca unique: “I think it’s important to give people a show”. That’s what you’re signing up for, an all-out theatrical performance, costume changes included. Mixed with well-written and hard-rocking music, they see no reason for their shows not to be both a fun time and a chance to hear truly talented musicianship. The band initially formed with lead singer JT Martin and

guitarist Sean Hannon in 2006, though they were not known as Chasca until 2010. After acquiring bassist Junior Scott, keyboardist Brittany Paris, and drummer Wiley Koepp, the band was complete. Since then, they have been hard at work honing both their sound and their high-energy performances, not to mention recording the two EPs available on their website, www.chascamusic.com. Martin says of their unique appeal, “We have a lot of fun when we play, and I think people see that, and it is silly, and over the top, and irreverent. But it’s also passionate.” Drawing from influences such as Genesis, Queen, Meat Loaf and Frank Zappa, their tight sound and cue-driven songs are both fun and interesting enough to demand further listening. Arriving at the venue three hours before they’re set to perform, Chasca is a hard-working band. Not only in terms of their music or their showmanship, but simply in making sure that when they do take the stage, conditions are right for them to put on one of the best and most involved shows by a local band you’re likely to see.

Emani Gant traded in the mean streets of L.A. for the hardwood of Texas State. Now he aspires for more. Emani Gant, a Senior Forward for the Texas State Basketball walks in after a busy student-athlete morning. Gant takes a seat as he discusses the adjustment moving to Texas and his early days as a child in Los Angeles. “It’s a big adjustment, it’s a lot different than what I expected! Really….when I came to Texas I was expecting a whole bunch of cows, farms and stuff. But I actually came to like it here a lot. The weather is different but I love the people here. The southern hospitality is real.”

Gant’s joking manner is in direct opposition to his tenacity and aggression on the court, but he comes by it honestly. “Growing up in LA, I went to a few different schools around the area. Everywhere I went I was just a happy guy. I’ve been playing sports my whole life. I started off playing football, which was my first love. And basketball out of nowhere became the love of my life and just something I became passionate about.” “I lived in a bad neighborhood growing up and I just stayed away from all that. My mom wouldn’t let me get anywhere close to trouble. I took the high road and stuck with it and luckily it worked out for me.” Gant went on to say how his mom was everything for him. She was strict with him, his biggest motivation to reach his full potential, a strong minded individual, and a resilient woman. As Gant characterized her, “She taught me how to be a man and she’s not even a man. That’s the amazing part for me.” The little kid who used to run around the park, play in youth city league double-overtime championship games, and listening to his mother’s every single word in LA now finds himself in the Hill Country of Texas pursuing his own legacy and dreams. Gant enters his senior season looking to help bring Texas State its first winning season in 17 years under Coach Danny Kaspar.

Gant enters the 2015-2016 season with his 12.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game averages that have garnered him All-Sun Belt Conference First-Team Honors. Gant fully believes that his teammates and coaching staff have amassed the talent and put in the dedication to be contenders this year. Gant hopes to lead this squad to a winning season and finish his Texas State career in the right fashion. When asked what happens the day after his basketball career at Texas State is finished, he boldly states, “I’m kissing my championship ring and probably heading to another basketball court to put more work in.” TXStateBobcats txstatebobcats.com

A Texas State education leads to big things at BET Network After attending three universities, going through five majors, and being in her sixth year of college, Trisha Espinoza realized she was at a critical point in her college career when she transferred to Texas State. “My experience at Texas State was phenomenal,” Espinoza said. “Because I had been [at] a few other places, and my journey was a struggle. Coming to Texas State I was exhausted and I just wanted a degree already. I walked in and met with the advisor and right there and then they said ‘What do you want to do?’ and it was the most welcoming experience.” At Texas State Espinoza participated in several organizations, most memorably with KTSW, the university radio station. Espinoza says that helped her narrow down her career choices. “I early on figured out what I was good at and what I

wasn’t good at within the media. I think also just getting that hands on experience here at Texas State set me apart from other students or other recent grads, being able to say ‘Here’s what I’ve made, here’s what I did, and these are the projects I’ve managed.’”

get through it.” This attitude allowed Espinoza to persevere, initially working in program planning at MTV, moving over to NBC Universal, and finally to her current position as Vice President of Programming at BET Networks.

After discovering her passion for mass media, Espinoza began the slow and challenging process of maneuvering through the ranks. Starting as an intern at Viacom, Espinoza found that doing the most challenging thing about the world of television was finding the patience to wait for an opportunity to shine. “You have to be able to look at the light at the end of the tunnel,” Espinoza said. “And for me that was always looking at my boss’ position and saying ‘Do I want to do that?’ and as long as the answer was always ‘Yes’ then I knew I had to put my head down, stop complaining, and just

Espinoza’s role is to look at the long term plan and determine where BET will be in the next year or two and monitor the ratings, which are the “here and now” of the television industry. She has reached a “comfortable” position in her career and hopes to stay for a while until she decides her next career move, which she hopes will be more leadership oriented. As Espinoza has progressed through her career she’s held true to her own advice for current college students. “Use every experience you have

as a foundation to set you up for the next one.” Espinoza says that every experience is valuable and you should never discredit small roles and part time jobs that seem miniscule now but could prove very valuable to future employers. As she puts it, “It doesn’t matter if it’s serving at Chili’s, every single experience is crucial to who you are and to getting you to the next level. A lot of students that I’ve seen, they really want to hype up some things that they touched upon in an internship or a class but there’s not really any meat there. I would much rather see three amazing bullets under Chili’s than five made up ones under HBO.”

”It was the first time we were able to share the film with more audiences, and to see how much it inspired them filled my heart with joy,” Velasquez said. Velasquez has a rare congenital condition that prevents her from gaining weight. After being bullied throughout her childhood and teenage years, Velasquez became an anti-bullying advocate and began sharing her story and her message, which has been well-received far and wide. ”I definitely did not even dream about having my story be known around the world,” Velasquez said. ”It’s very surreal to travel to new places and run into people who know my name and want to hug me!” Not only has the documentary earned acclaim, but also a federal anti-bullying law Velasquez has lobbied for. The Safe Schools Improvement Act was formally introduced in the Senate in January. The bill, which has 40 cosponsors, is still in committee.

Anti-Bullying Advocate Gets New Platform Documentary about Texas State University graduate collects awards and praise. 2015 was a big year for Lizzie Velasquez. The Texas State University alumna, who became a motivational speaker and powerful voice against bullying, is the subject of an award-winning documentary that has drawn more attention to her story and message. ”A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story,” directed by Austinite Sara Hirsh Bordo, debuted at the SXSW Film Festival in March and won an Audience Award.

The trend took a sharp downturn in 2015 amidst societal concerns with narcissism and self-absorption. The term ”Narcisstick” was coined and amusements parks such as Six Flags and Disney banned selfie sticks citing concerns with safety on rides.

“Straight Outta” The film Straight Outta Compton, based on the rise of rapper Dr. Dre and N.W.A., was released in theaters in August The Beats by Dre brand hosted straightouttasomewhere.com where users could upload a photo and enter their hometown and a custom image would be created for them to download or share. This spurred custom “Straight Outta” slogans popping up on social media and even T-shirts.

The American Sign Language Entertainer Texas State football defensive end Brian Guendling grew up with an understanding of those who live with handicaps. His father was a second round NFL Draft Pick, but he had two brothers who were blind and mentally handicapped. Guendling himself didn’t speak until age 4 and acquired a passion for sign language and the deaf community at an early age. After learning most of his deaf friends had never been to a concert but wanted to go to one, Guendling got the idea to perform sign language during concerts with costumes and fun entertainment. His first performance was in July at Nephews with a performance of Mark Ronson’s ”Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars. The video went viral within days. He has continued his sign language performances including a performance at a deaf couple’s wedding. Find this new passion in life, Guendling ended his Texas State football career voluntarily.

FREE COLLEGE BOOM! 2015 was the 18th consecutive year Texas State set a new record for total enrollment. Moreover, in September Texas State announced it will be participating in the ‘Freshman Year for Free’ program, the first public Texas university to do so. The program will start in fall 2016 and allows students to take up to 30 hours of online courses for free to earn college credit. This makes the burgeoning university one of the best values in the state, increasing enrollment applications by 50%.

Barbie Jeep Girl

Some people ride bikes or public transit when their licenses are suspended, but one battery-powered Barbie Jeep-riding Texas State student did not allow a DWI arrest stop her from getting around on her own four wheels. Tara Monroe went viral in September after many Instagram and Snapchat sightings of her 5 mph ride around campus and the Square made her an Internet sensation that quickly turned into a topic of debate. From USA Today to Texas Monthly to TMZ, Monroe was surprised by the attention. @tarap_queen

Naked Alkek Girl Monika Rostvold, fine arts major, sat semi-naked in only a red blindfold, pasties, a nude thong and headphones in front of Alkek Library for 45 minutes this past April. Rather than aiming to get negative attention, Rostvold created the performance art piece to bring awareness to sexual assault. ”I wanted people to view my body as beauty and power and not a sexual object. The fact that it is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I wanted to create a piece about the standards that exist in our society,” Rostvold told the San Antonio Express-News. “Being a victim and having friends who are victims of sexual assault I wanted to take control of my body by eliminating my presence and exposing myself.” Campus police received several complaints of indecency, but they let Rostvold carry on with her project after they determined she was not breaking the law. CAMPUS GUN STORE In August 2016 “campus carry” goes into effect at TXST and other public institutions of higher education. Though it has been legal for a license holder to carry a concealed handgun on campus since 1995, taking that weapon into buildings was prohibited. With the new law, weapons may be allowed inside campus buildings including dormitories, depending on what each university decides. In preparation, the TXST student gun club organization, Shoot’em Up Cats, aims to fund a university feasibility study advocating the opening of a firearm storage facility on campus. “Cat Gat Storage” is a temporary gun locker rental service for those visiting areas of campus deemed off limits. Proposed to open inside the Paws & Go Market close to the quad, the location is thought to be ideal since it is centrally located close to bus stops and the campus police station.

The Other Side Of Radio

What goes on the air is determined by this woman off the air. Texas State senior Tara Pohlmeyer has left her mark on San Marcos radio. As station manager for Texas State’s student radio station, KTSW 89.9, Pohlmeyer serves not just the university’s student population, but the San Marcos area as a whole. “We want to be here for San Marcos,” Pohlmeyer said. ”During the recent floods, our goal has been to be here for San Marcos. I just hope that we’re continuously able to improve and do more for San Marcos.” When the Memorial Day floods struck, KTSW’s summer staff wasn’t trained yet so the coverage wasn’t as good as it could have been. Pohlmeyer started working for the station as a freshman and ran their social media before being promoted to station manager this year. She oversees 13 different departments and more than 160 employees. “It’s been such a huge opportunity and such a big learning experience,” Pohlmeyer said. ”I learn something new every day, and I truly don’t know what’s going to happen when I walk in the office.”

Rhea’s Ice Cream Changes Owners, Not Flavors

“We are the middle man between the athletic world and the academic world. We deal with both professors and coaches so that they don’t have to deal with each other.”

Rhea’s Ice Cream is a San Marcos staple. But when owner Rhea Ortamond decided to move to Chicago this year, it looked like the end for the homemade ice cream shop known for its unique and rotating flavors. When Ortamond’s friend Lindsey Belk and partner Kyle Mylius (who also owns Root Cellar Café) offered to buy the business, Ortamond agreed. With the Root Cellar partnership Rhea’s now serves fresh-baked brownies, cookies, milkshakes, tea, and sodas along with ice cream and fresh waffle cones. Belk says he hopes to one day expand Rhea’s to include more locations along the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio. The most popular ice cream flavor is avocado coconut. Other unique flavors at the shop include caramel sea salt and s’mores.

One woman takes on the responsibility of keeping the entire TXST football team academically eligible.

In July the San Marcos City Council approved the arrival of Uber. Local tubers have used the service as a personal shuttle and many use Uber as a safe and responsible commute home from bars in San Marcos and Austin.

Growing up in San Marcos, Laurie Hindson didn’t see herself returning anytime soon when she left for LSU. Working for Texas State University and serving as an almost motherly figure for about 120 football players has given her a new appreciation for San Marcos.

Hindson works as the Director of the Athletic Academic Center as the “middle man between the athletic world and the academic world.” She began tutoring athletes as an undergraduate student at LSU and has always enjoyed sports. She has now served in her position for 5 years, working specifically with Bobcat football players while also overseeing the office of Athletic Academics. Hindson meets with approximately 50 football players per week, going over their academic progress and getting them the resources needed to

stay on track. She also meets once a week with the coaches to make sure they have a clear understanding of where their players stand academically. Hindson has a very close relationship to her student athletes. In helping them achieve their goals, she says, “I’m kind of a mom for them [TXST football players]. Sometimes they like me, sometimes they don’t.” Hindson says the hardest part of her job is to motivate the players and make them aware that they have the skills to succeed academically, and she finds it rewarding to see them succeed in areas that they thought they could not. “I think sometimes they get frustrated… and it’s my job to make sure they are aware that they can do it. They just have to put their mind to it.” Hindson has a passion for athletics here that is displayed in the intensive amount of work and effort she puts into her job “I think that president Trauth puts it best- sports are kind of the front porch of the university and whether you like it or not, that’s how your name gets out there… so you want to make sure that your athletes are representing the university to the best of their abilities.”

University Disabilities Policies Not In Line With the ADA This fall a student veteran suffering from PTSD was told documentation was needed to prove his dog was a service animal before he could return with her to class at Texas State. Although he complied, it sparked an investigation into the school’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to the ADA, if a dog is a registered service dog, it’s against the law to ask for such documentation. It was also found that other rules in the university’s disabilities policy were not in compliance. After the incident, the Office of Disabilities updated their policies to be in line with the ADA.

Watering Lawns OK Again As they say, dark clouds have silver linings. Two floods in a year caused a lot of property damage in the area, but the Halloween weekend storms also refilled the Edwards Aquifer. As a result, the city of San Marcos lifted drought restrictions on November 15th, allowing homeowners to use sprinklers on their lawns again and to wash their cars with a bucket and automatic shut-off hose.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

The beloved holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, is the next installment in the EmilyAnn Theatre’s interactive children’s series. With a few twists on Charles Dickens’ classic tale, this interactive play was adapted by D. Heath Thompson for young audiences with original music and songs by Michael McKelvey. The performance teaches the values of kindness and sharing. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge sits alone counting his cash and is visited by friendlier, funnier versions of the ghosts of Christmas Present, Past and Future. The ghosts show Scrooge the errors of his crotchety ways and help him make an overnight transformation from grouchy to grateful! This 40-minute show promises fun for audience members of all ages. SANTA’S RANCH

More than 1.5 million twinkling lights illuminate 12 acres at this drive-through Christmas Light Park. Attractions include a 50-foot Christmas tree, drivethrough tunnels, hundreds of lighted characters, and more than 50 major scenes. A drive through snack bar oﬀers kettle corn, hot cocoa, and other treats. “Every year I look for something new to add,” says Frank Bass who started Santa’s Ranch with his wife, Melanie, in 2003. This year, Bass has added more than a dozen new scenes, including Mount Rushmore, a new 120-foot tunnel of lights that visitors drive through and a “Lord’s Supper” display. In addition to the new displays, the park is filled with many of the popular exhibits from past years including Santa’s Workshop, Texas-themed displays, lots of reindeer and even giant dinosaurs. Former Robert Earl Keen band member flourishes with his own violin shop. The bow screeched across the violin’s strings as a young Bryan Duckworth drew it back and forth. Duckworth had taken his childhood friend’s violin and repeatedly played the instrument until his friend wanted it back – but that didn’t stop him from playing. Decades later, Duckworth’s still armed with a violin, and he’s not afraid to use it. Through trial-and-error, the Seguin-based Duckworth learned to play the violin, the instrument used to play fiddle-style music. The terms violin and fiddle are used interchangeably among players and dealers.

To save the eardrums of future generations, Duckworth offers violin and fiddle lessons on a limited basis to adults and youth. Duckworth’s own youthful memories, including a mix of formal and informal fiddle lessons, seem plucked from the plot of a Larry McMurtry novel. At 18 years old, he began seriously playing the fiddle, a hobby-turned-passion that grew from his interest in Western Swing and Bluegrass music. Duckworth took his fiddle with him to Texas A&M University and “almost immediately” found others who shared his interest, including country musician Robert Earl Keen, his “musical partnerin-crime” and a friend since 3rd grade. The remnants of the sixties and early seventies’ coffeehouse scene still lingered in the air in College Station. This environment encouraged singer-songwriters and folk music enthusiasts, drifting down Church Street to the house Duckworth

Duckworth’s fondest college memories are centered on this house, which became a meeting place for musicians and singers of all stripes. “We might start playing on Saturday [at] noon and continue...‘til three in the morning,” Duckworth said. His first fiddle gig was entertaining the Texas A&M Future Farmers of America in an on-campus classroom. After graduating from A&M in 1978 with an agriculture degree Duckworth moved to Houston to play fiddle full-time. There he learned that he wasn’t very good. So, he found a teacher willing to work with him if he agreed to relearn the instrument. He hung around Winters Violin Shop and distracted the employees to the point where he was given a bench to work on instruments. Since then, Duckworth has released his own music and played fiddle on numerous Keen albums. When Duckworth left Keen’s band in 2000, he didn’t have a plan, just some experience working in a violin shop and a now-or-never attitude. Duckworth turned that experience into Duckworth Violin Shop, where he’s been repairing and teaching violin for more than a decade now.

One of San Marcos’ major roads, Wonder World Drive is a growing area. “Home to popular restaurant. Making Art Out Of Nothing At All Words and photos by Eric Morales

Local artist never has a plan but still gets results. Grace Marlow’s art is like a spontaneous movement against stillness. It is neither violent nor gentle. It is exactly what it needs to be. Her art represents itself as it comes from nothing. “Nothing” is meant to say that the art is a process of revelation and uncovering. She doesn’t create it so much as she reveals it. Marlow describes her process as something that happens. She observes it as it’s happening, and takes time to pause, to monitor its path or its changes as the art emerges. It begins as an abstraction and slowly begins to take shape over the course of its multi-step process. Everything begins without a concept in mind. The next few days of progress depend on everything the artist is experiencing at the time. Finally, as the life in the art surfaces the names are given to the pieces. The name comes last, and whatever she sees or feels is what it is called. Almost as if the name comes from the piece, it’s a reference to what the piece is, not the center or genesis of the creation.

Her main body of work, to date, has been black and white. “It’s just how I make sense of the world. Understanding the shadow side of myself and people. The darker things that most people will hide from, including myself. Things like heartache, loss, grief, anger.” As it is for many artists, the work is simply an outlet for expression. There is no right or wrong. “I’m also still trying to figure it out,” said Marlow. “I’m basically going to art school by myself. I look at art books and I look at nature, and read.” Grace Marlow was born and raised in San Marcos. She earned her BFA in Acting at Texas State. She still performs Shakespeare, and you might have seen her on a TV commercial or two. She spent 2014 in New York finding herself, and refining the artistic process that is relatively unique. Though an autodidact, Marlow does come from an artistic family, so it’s in her blood. Marlow’s grandfather, Dr. Foster Leroy Marlow had great involvement with the local art scene, specifically the university. Dr. Marlow was the Art Department Chair from 1968 until 1991 when he retired, and remained emeritus professor. Dr. Marlow was mainly a sculptor, but he

also painted, made functional art rugs, welded, made ceramic pottery, and was a designer. He designed the San Marcos Airport sign in 1979 and the Quail Creek Country Club entrance sign in 1975. At 58, Mike Davis holds on to an almost lifelong racing passion that grew from one simple thought: “Don’t you like to go fast?” Davis began his competitive racing career at a very young age. “I started racing motorcycles when I was twelve and I just gradually progressed and went from motocross in the 70s to cross country and desert racing,” he said. Davis is a consistent and active member of the racing community, but utilizes his practical skills and business savvy running seven 3D Welding stores from his San Marcos headquarters. For him the racing is a passion. “It’s only a hobby, but it’s a passionate hobby. There is no greater feeling than being one with the automobile.” Davis admits that being one with the automobile has its consequences, saying, “My body has paid the price,” and comparing his body to that of an athlete who is gradually worn down after years of intense physical activity. Although he has been in countless races and broken a plethora of records, just a few resonate with him. “My biggest racing accomplishment was in 1987. I was second overall in a Dirt Bike Club of San Antonio Series. Also in 1987, I not only raced the Barstow to Vegas race but I finished, which is 168 miles through the desert and it’s brutal.” He also mentioned one of his most noteworthy racing moments. “Running In 2010 at the Texas Mile in a stock 06 I ran 175.00 miles an hour and then I turned around and ran 175.00 miles an hour again back to back, and on a stock 06 that was unheard of at the time.” Mike Davis has truly mastered one of the greatest dilemmas of all time: how to accomplish practical goals and still follow your passion.

In September, Davis won the 135 mph division of the Silver State Classic Road Race in Las Vegas for the second year in a row.

With its proximity to the established film community of Austin, small town charm, and recent designation as a “Film Friendly Community” by the Texas Film Commission, Matt Damon lands in San Marcos along with a few other Hollywood stars. Due to the popularity of the HBO series The Leftovers, which films principally in nearby Lockhart, Damon will scout San Marcos to film his HBO series Project Green Light. The similar recurring filming agreement for San Marcos brings positive growth in terms of job creation and recognition.

As the fastest-growing city in the nation there are growing pains and road construction tops that list. It is a headache for drivers when construction increases traffic and closes roads but it can be a menace to small businesses that have decreased sales due to traffic and parking issues (not to mention construction unsightliness at their storefront). Nonetheless, when the dust clears the pain is almost certainly worth the trouble.

With the rising living costs of surrounding cities, the affordability and offbeat culture of San Marcos is making the town a hotbed for artists. Artists and property owners have been self-funding murals and now the City of San Marcos has embraced the trend with a mural arts program. In September, the $7 million North LBJ Drive Improvements project that lasted almost 2 years was completed. The project included a widened roadway, new dedicated bike lanes and sidewalks, upgraded water and wastewater utilities, and improved drainage. Also in September, the 18 month project to widen Hunter Road was completed. The $10 million project increased Hunter Road to 5 lanes, improved drainage, added a bridge over Purgatory Creek, and added bike lanes. In March, construction began on a four-lane overpass at Hwy. 123 and Wonder World Drive. Construction on the $13.19 million project is expected to last until spring of 2017. Construction to build an overpass at Aquarena Springs broke ground in September. The $20.73 million construction of Loop 82 will give drivers the option of bypassing the railroad tracks and is set to be completed in winter 2017.

Save Our Wells It started in January when Electro Purification proposed to pull 5.3 million gallons of water per day from the Middle Trinity Aquifer through wellfields it owned. The water would be sold to fast-growing Austin suburbs such as Buda. Concerns included possible impacts to area water wells and possibly Jacob’s Well, which has its source in the Middle Trinity. The springs fed by the Trinity Aquifer travel to the Blanco River and then to the San Marcos River.

house owner and Texas songwriters’ mentor, passed away March 2nd at age 77. Cheatham Street Warehouse is known as the place where George Strait and many others got their start. Finlay’s songwriter’s night, an open mike for original songs he hosted nearly every Wednesday for over forty years, nurtured songwriters and storytellers. A memorial and tribute concert was held at Evans Auditorium at Texas State University.

Daniel Hannon died in a drowning accident in the San Marcos River on July 22nd. Dr. Hannon was tubing near Children’s Park with his sister-in-law when she began having trouble and fell out of her tube. Dr. Hannon left his tube to assist her. The 80-year-old Dr. Hannon was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Theatre at Texas State University in 2008 and was a mentor to generations of set designers. His memorial was held at the Department of Theater and Dance. Guy Trimble was a former publisher of the San Marcos Daily Record. He

passed on July 10 at age 63 after a long fight with cancer. A memorial was held at Cheatham Street Warehouse. Beloved San Marcos High School swim coach Skip Gilkerson died on October 25 from injuries from a motorcycle accident at age 74. A member of the Water Ski Hall of Fame, Gilkerson won the award for the most outstanding male show skier in the country. Gilkerson taught in San Marcos for 12 years and led San Marcos High School to its first swimming district title in 2013 and his team defended that title in 2014. A memorial was held at San Marcos High School Performing Arts Center. For close to four decades Eddie Mack Edwards managed The Showdown, a bar Mack described as the “Cheers” of San Marcos. Edwards opened The Showdown in 1977, later managing for about 16 years its now-defunct sister location in Austin. On the eve of that bar’s closure, he told one reporter: “I’ve put a lot of blood and guts into this place.” The same can be said of his San Marcos leadership. Edwards passed on May 5 at the age of 64.

Hill Country roads were soon plastered with “Save Our Wells” signs and State Representative Jason Isaac introduced HB 3405 to expand the jurisdiction of the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Groundwater Conservation District to include water wellfields owned by Electro Purification. Under the bill Electro Purification would have to report to the Barton Springs/ Edwards Aquifer district how much water it withdraws from the Trinity Aquifer and potentially be subject to pumping limits. HB 3405 passed in March but it is not a guarantee to stop or even curtail Electro Purification’s project. The company is currently pumping water through the use of a temporary permits issued as a part of the legislation. The temporary permits require an aquifer test to be conducted in order to determine how much groundwater can be pumped within six months without harming the overall supply of the surrounding area. If the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District does impose limits on the company’s pumping, it’s likely to end up in court, where there is no guarantee of victory.

Fluoride Fight After years of opposition, the issue of whether San Marcos should continue to add a fluoride compound to the city’s water supply came to a head. In response to a petition to place the amendment on the ballot for voters, the city filed a lawsuit. A judge ruled the petition was valid and the issue was voted on in November where it passed with 60% of the vote. The amendment will “prohibit the city and its agents from adding fluoride to the San Marcos municipal water supply.”

Flood Disasters 2015 was a devastating year for the San Marcos area. During the Memorial Weekend floods, rain falling from Saturday afternoon into the overnight hours of early Sunday morning led to a rapid rise in the Blanco and San Marcos Rivers. The Blanco River at Wimberley rose from near 5 feet at 9pm to almost 41 feet by 1am, 7 feet higher than the previous record set in 1929. One staggering statistic is that the river rose 5 feet every 15 minutes from 10:45pm to 11:45pm. Tree rings suggest some of the Cypress trees wiped out in the flood were 500 to 600 years old; meaning, this is likely the worst flood on the Blanco in hundreds of years. Numerous high water rescues occurred along the banks of the Blanco and eventually the San Marcos Rivers. To date, 11 fatalities have been confirmed.

WORKING TOWARDS AN M-BEE-A LOCAL ATTORNEY JUGGLES WORK, GRAD SCHOOL AND BEEKEEPING RESPONSIBILITIES. Montgomery arrived in San Marcos in November 2012. He works as a prosecutor for the city dealing with Class C misdemeanors and has his own private practice focusing on criminal defense outside of Hays County. Montgomery is also a master’s student working on a degree in Public Administration at Texas State University. When he’s not focusing on his legal practices or in class, he manages four bee hives in the area; two near San Marcos and two in Zorn. “I have friends that have some property here and I just put them [hives] on their land. They like it because it’s beneficial to their property and the farming in the area. It helps the crops and with flowering plants in general.” When asked how he finds the balance in all this he said, “I have a lot of sticky notes.” He has to have immaculate time management skills to handle the workload. After Law School Montgomery noticed that the job industry wasn’t in a good place, so he diversified himself and his career plans in order to create stability. As Mont-

gomery put it, “You’ve got to have your hands in different areas. Otherwise, you’re not going to make it.” Montgomery had law connections in the area and decided to move to San Marcos, where he started his honey business, which has gained immense support from the community. Selling honey at $1.00 per ounce has gained him a loyal customer base. “I have a lot of demand for honey,” he says, ”but only having four hives I can’t produce enough to meet the demand sometimes.” According to Montgomery there are lots of benefits to consuming locally produced honey. “There’s a notion that local honey is good for your allergies, when it’s raw and not pasteurized and heated to get rid of the medical benefits. Also, I think our culture is going back to wanting to help out the local folks.” Though he obtained his skills and knowledge of beekeeping from his father, Montgomery feels there’s such a substantial base of knowledge on the internet that anyone interested in learning the craft could find everything they need to know online.

5 short months later, the morning before Halloween, another flood came. Many of the same homes and businesses were hit, along with newly affected areas across the state. The Blanco River crested at 42.5 feet, just six inches below the Memorial Day flood. The tragedy brought the community together with multitudes of volunteers and charities offering supplies and manpower to assist in the clean-up, but there is still much to be done.

Growth

The numbers are staggering. When new census statistics were released in May they showed the city’s population increased by 7.9 percent between 2013 and 2014 to 55,892. That made San Marcos the fastest-growing city in the nation for the t hird year in a row. Hays County as a whole grew by 4.8 percent, making it the fifth fastest-growing county in the nation. Also in 2015, Forbes named San Marcos one of the top “25 Best Places to Retire”.

The fastest growing city in the nation for three years running continues to get better. A planning technician for the city of San Marcos, Andrea Villalobos’ knowledge of developmental services has led to local projects such as the Sidewalk Café and Parklet ordinance. “What steered me towards planning was the desire to work with the community. In the planning profession a lot of it is focused on the community- interacting, talking with them, and getting their input, because we are designing not just for one client but for everyone.” From her childhood days as an avid Zoo Tycoon player, Villalobos’ early passion for architecture and design have brought her to the forefront of planning development for

the diverse community of San Marcos. Daily job requirements, from reviewing residential permits that are compliant with the land development code to current planning of city projects are all in a day’s work. Villalobos’ tireless work efforts were recognized recently by the American Planning Association. The city of San Marcos won the 2015 Current Planning Award for the Sidewalk Cafes and the Similar Special Uses of Public Right-of-Way Ordinance and Pilot program. The small parks being built take unused portions of land to create a serene atmosphere for workers, students and locals to enjoy. It promotes the growth of the city and entices new businesses. A pedestrian friendly environment is one of the main goals for these small parks. As Villalobos continues to flourish in her career, so too will the city of San Marcos.

’Piizzzzzzaaaaaaa! Lady’ Breaks H-E-B Sales Record Sherlon Jackson, the self-proclaimed “pizza lady” of San Marcos, broke a personal record in March for selling the most pizzas in a day. At the end of the day Jackson had sold 366 pizzas, breaking her goal of 300 and her previous record of 278. According to Jackson, when pizza was first introduced at the “big” H-E-B on East Hopkins in San Marcos, sales were low. One day Jackson was asked to hand out samples

and sold about 75 pizzas in a single day, starting her drive to sell more. News spread of her goal to break 300 and with the help of media outlets, local businesses and local supporters, people marked their calendars for the big day. The event was a huge success with pizzas sold out by 6 pm. Jackson’s 2016 goal is to sell 450 pizzas in one day.

Springtown Shopping Center was just 10.5 percent occupied when Endeavor Real Estate purchased it in November. Now under new ownership, exciting changes are coming to Thorpe Lane. The 18+ entertainment complex “The Spot” will feature a six-screen dine-in cinema with luxury recliner seating. Gold’s Gym signed a lease in the largest space of the center at 42,000 sq ft. But it’s the larger than life haunted house opening in October that has locals terrified. The almost too much to take Scare House brings torment to life with over 20 actors making your skin crawl. Patrons have to sign a waiver before entering that absolves the ownership group from claims of mental anguish. EVO Entertainment Group is the company behind The Spot. It has a similar facility in Kyle.

Texas State Football “Blackouts” Season Tickets In October, Texas State Athletics took the first step in solving the “problem” of unprecedented access to viewing Bobcat Football on TV. WatchESPN, the main culprit, is one of the most downloaded apps on Roko, Amazon Fire, Apple TV and smart TVs. Because the Sunbelt Conference has a deal with ESPN, all football games are now at least broadcast on ESPN 3, the sports giant’s steaming HD station, providing accessibility to just about anyone with a subscription to a cable or satellite provider. Even the “cordcutters” favorite, Sling TV provides access to Watch ESPN. It was becoming too easy for Texas State Football fans to watch games, something they were not used to only a couple of years ago. In an effort to bring the boutique-ness back to Bobcat football, a broadcast rights deal was struck with Time Warner Cable (TWC) to air games only to subscribers of their top tier sports package, blacking out the games to all other cable and satellite providers in the greater Central Texas area. With a deal this lucrative, experts believe the exclusivity to watch games will go one step further next year when Texas State Athletics announces 2016 football season tickets will be sold only to Time Warner Cable subscribers. For fans who live outside of TWC’s service area or don’t want to switch TV providers, waivers will be granted with an additional $200 donation to the Bobcat Club per season ticket seat. Single game tickets can be purchased by the public at a 50% markup, but only the week prior to each home game.

Drone Delivery Test Site

In July AMAZON announced a fulfillment center will be opening in San Marcos behind Embassy Suites. The facility will create at least 350 new jobs, more if Amazon wants to take full advantage of potential tax breaks. But what C.E.O Jeff Bezos has yet to reveal is the impending deal between the San Marcos Airport Commission and the FAA to launch the age of drone delivery. Per the agreement, Amazon staffs extra air traffic controllers and rents airport hangar space to set up a mini distribution center, testing drone delivery in San Marcos and Kyle, capping deliveries at 1000 per day.

Flood relief needs were massive in 2015 and there is still much to be done. The community pulled together to lend a helping hand physically and financially. Numerous businesses did their part donating supplies, volunteers, and a great deal of money. It was extraordinary witnessing what elbow grease, determination and compassion can accomplish.

SERVING SAN MARCOS LOCAL PASTOR AND FORMER SOFTWARE DEVELOPER USES HIS SKILLS TO SERVE HIS COMMUNITY. No matter how lucrative the software was, Todd Salmi heard a calling bigger than the computer industry. After co-founding a successful software company in Austin, Salmi and his wife (a molecular scientist) followed their calling and went from computer codes to decoding scriptures. After receiving his Master of Divinity at Emory University, Salmi served as a chaplain at a women’s prison, then led a church in Mexico, and worked with a substance recovery program. In 2012 the family was called to return to Central Texas, where Reverend Salmi now serves as an associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in San Marcos. “My faith calls me to civic engagement,” he says. Reverend Salmi met with local groups and charities to “find gaps and start addressing them.” That’s where the idea of Serve San Marcos was

born. As a Methodist pastor, Reverend Salmi will likely be called to move to another community at some point. His goal, therefore, was to create an entity that would serve the community even after he left. Using his computer programming knowledge, Reverend Salmi created Serve San Marcos, a website where charities and volunteers can each log in and connect to each other. Community members and groups can easily sign up to volunteer and charities now have a central location for finding much needed volunteers. Serve San Marcos was planned to launch in the Fall of 2015, but when the Memorial Weekend floods hit, Reverend Salmi and church members sprang into action. The volunteer coordinator station at Half Price Books was Serve San Marcos’ first community event. The group was able to track over $175,000 of in-kind volunteer hours for the city to use towards their portion of FEMA contributions. SMTXMAGAZINE.COM

When the Memorial weekend flood hit, Serve San Marcos accelerated their launch and coordinated volunteer efforts, tracking $175,000 worth of volunteer hours. Those were hours in which victims were directly helped but also assisted towards the city’s financial obligation to FEMA. In addition to donating money to area charities, the United Way of Hays County sponsored a benefit concert featuring Blue October and raised over $200,000. When another flood hit again the day before Halloween, it was heartbreaking. But the community once again picked up the pieces, pitched in, and united to become “Stronger Together”.
