After choosing the different prototypes that our studio would be exploring, our group delved into the idea of a Bob Evans on a college campus. We started by brainstorming what the store’s identity would be, considering the area and demographic. We decided that it definitely had to be a party, no matter what. We put together a list of critiques millennials have, as a whole, about the current Bob Evans. Our age group is not attracted to Bob’s because the environment is not stimulating. The windows seem dark from the outside, not revealing what is going on inside. The menu is very overwhelming, with too many choices and pictures. Lastly, the entry way is very confusing, with too many unclear directions and too many people to come into contact with. We then set out to put a positive spin on our research. Bob Evans is obviously doing something right if they have lasted for so many years. We decided to keep the keyhole, the color red, the biscuit cutter shape, and breakfast (by far, millennials favorite BE meal). Instead of keeping everything the same, we intensified each element to a new level. This intensification takes form inside and out. On the façade, we made a border of simplified and inverted keyholes that wrap the building. The entry is a layering of many different styles of keyholes stacked one on top of the other. The biscuit cutter manifests itself also, become layers of the façade and punch windows. The primary color Bob Evans has always used was modernized as well. We chose fluorescent red, as it is more stimulating, but it still is recognized as red. The modernized archways carry guests into the restaurant where they instantly experience the bar hub. It also is fluorescent red, and its curves carry people through to the seating area. The last element of Bob Evans that we intensified is breakfast. Our restaurant, simply phrased, is a breakfast party. We serve only breakfast and we do it better than anyone! At the bar, there is an omelet grill, where guests can watch their breakfast being made with the freshest ingredients. While the focal point is the bar hub, guests have other seating options besides the bar, such as large party tables, booths, a lounge, or the beer garden. Wherever they find themselves, the image of the bar is always present. While we offer a plethora of options, guests will still find this restaurant fun, stimulating and easy to navigate.
