100 The Original Readers’ Choice Awards Now in its eighth year, NAILS Readers’ Choice Awards honor the nail professionals’ favorite products in a myriad of categories. 108 Nail Art Thinks Different This one is for the dried flowers, the rhinestones, the pieces of mylar who dare to stand out and be noticed, who push nail art forward to the next generation of inspired nail techs who are destined to create nail masterpieces that will amaze and astound. For the techs who are ready for the next level of 3-D nail art design, here is what’s available to help.

116 It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like the Holidays The winter holidays are a great time to bring joy and cheer to your salon. Clients appreciate the little decorative touches as much as they do the special holiday services or the gift bags. Just a little effort can quickly turn a first-year client into a life-long loyal. 122 Making the Move to Mobile It’s easy to be a mobile tech when the only challenge is packing your supplies and driving to a client’s home, but what if you want a multi-service mobile spa? We spoke to mobile owners to find out how they got started.

122 128

128 Holiday Red-dy Festive red is a terrific holiday color for your clients’ nails. We challenged nail artists with creating monochromatic nails, using only shades of red, to inspire you.

{on my mind} Think Different

As a creative person in a creative job in a creative industry, I’d like to take a moment to remember Steve Jobs. The founder of Apple,

Congrats to Jane Aquino, an instructor of nails and cosmetology at PJ’s College of Cosmetology and a booth renter at Platinum Salon in Louisville, Ky. She was chosen at random from everyone who filled out our Readers’ Choice Awards survey, and she’s the winner of a brand new Apple iPad 2. Turn to page 100 to see which products came out on top as nail techs’ faves.

Jobs encouraged not only employees of his company to think differently, he also encouraged the world at large to think differently. He elevated our expectations for personal computers, music, communications, and even animation. Even if you aren’t an Apple fanatic (like I am), you probably still are benefiting from Jobs’ genius. Because not only did he push his own company to take risks and push boundaries, he also pushed his competitors to do the same. When Apple launched its “Think Different” campaign in 1997, the ads were unique and inspiring. They included imagery of creative geniuses such as Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Mahatma Gandhi, Bob Dylan, Jim Henson, Pablo Picasso, and Miles Davis. With Jobs’ death and all of the subsequent pop-up memorials for him, I’ve been reminded of the text of these ads. And I actually think they relate to you — nail artists and others in the beauty industry — so I’d like to share those words here: “Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfi ts. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? We make tools for these kinds of people. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” In our nail microcosm, you are the crazy ones. You see things differently. You create art on tiny canvases. You figure out ways to use products in unique and interesting ways. You challenge the status quo. You explore and invent. And while some people might not understand your passion or your art, I see strokes of genius. I am inspired by you all. I urge you to continue to push the boundaries. Remember to “think different.” And never, ever be afraid to be one of the crazy ones.

Challenge #6: Suggest a service your client doesn’t normally get. I purchased a chemical heel peel product and when I see I won’t be able to remove a client’s heal callus “almost” completely, I suggest the peel. I apply it and it works while I’m doing her toenails. I’ve priced the add-on service at $10 and everyone has been happy with the results. Challenge #11: Cross-promote with one of your business neighbors. I’ve been crosspromoting with the hair salon I rent space with. For a couple of months we advertised Log on to www.nailsmag.com to answer together in the local paper. That campaign wasn’t beneficial to either of us. Now we are this month’s question and check back here going together for an in the Yellow Pages, which is good for me because I’m not listed to in see what other nailad techs have to say. there currently. Challenge #20: Overcome your fear of retail. I have overcome my fear of retail. But I’ve been really careful with what I carry. My biggest sellers are CND Solar Oil and CND Cuticle Eraser. I use them with every single mani and pedi in the salon. I use them myself. I think when you use them on clients and yourself they are easy to sell because you really believe in them. Challenge #24: Pick a NAILS client handout (or create your own) to distribute to interested clients. I created a handout for all my Shellac customers (about half of my business) called Shellac Homecare to give them when they get their first application. I also give them a mini bottle of Solar Oil. Most everyone said what a great idea that was and they’ve never seen a tech give them something like that. I did it because there’s so much to tell them about Shellac and a person can only absorb so much info. Challenge #25: Work smarter, not harder. Every afternoon or evening, I send one group text to my customers for the next day and list their first name and appointment time. It has cut down my no shows to almost zero! Challenge #28: Take control of your schedule. Almost all of my customers pre-book and right now most are booked up through Thanksgiving and Christmas. Challenge #40: Network with your peers. A local tech who has 10 years of experience including teaching nails (I’ll have one year as of 12/1/11.) started coming to me for pedicures. Then we started trading pedicures. Now she’s offered to teach me more about gel nails and let me practice on her! This is priceless! Challenge #42: Use social networking to market your business. I’ve had a Facebook page ever since I was in school for my business. I continue to update it frequently. I also have a web page as well. Challenge #45: Give yourself a raise. I’m in the process of giving myself a raise right now.

I have educated for companies, I have educated for associations, I have owned salons/spas and worked in other salons. I know how hard it is to find professionals to work and to find work. I decided to start this company to help professionals fi nd jobs and salons, spas, schools, associations, manufacturers, and distributors find professionals to fi ll spots for their companies. I am also going to be educating professionals to help them discover why this industry is so great and to get back to the basics of why we started working. I am very excited about this and have more information on Facebook, (www.facebook.com/nemcea). I am starting in my home state of South Carolina with my agency and putting a goal of one year to branch out to the rest of the U.S. So please if you know anyone that needs help and would like to register with NEMCEA so that I am able to assist them in reaching their goals; I would appreciate the referrals.

Thank you so much for a great magazine! When I graduated from nail tech school in 2009, I had no idea how to do gels or how to run a business. (The school I went to didn’t teach these important things.) Your magazine has taught me more than my own school did!

Editor’s Note: We’re so glad that NAILS has helped you continue your education. Hopefully you’ll continue to read learn from our magazine, our website (www.nailsmag.com), from attending trade shows and other classes, and from networking with other professionals. It’s a great industry and your hunger for more knowledge will help to further your career. Good luck.

{nails file} Tapping Your Inner Entrepreneur Do you think of yourself as an entrepreneur? If your answer is no, you might want to think again. If you have the courage, determination, and resolve to open your own business you definitely possess an entrepreneurial mindset, says nail industry success coach Trish Rock (www.nailsalonsuccesscoach.com). Rock offers the following list of qualities of an entrepreneurial mindset: > Entrepreneurs are careful, meticulous planners of success. > Entrepreneurs see obstacles and problems that arise in the pursuit of a goal as normal experiences in life. They are there to be solved. > Entrepreneurs dream up adventures and ideas, which they proceed to live out. This is the “what if” mentality. > Entrepreneurs realize their natural abilities and use them to the fullest. > Entrepreneurs act rationally, not emotionally, and constantly develop their thinking skills. > Entrepreneurs break conventions, go beyond the accepted and work through their fears. > Entrepreneurs create their own businesses and see them as incomegenerating mechanisms, not extensions of their identity or an opportunity to express their neuroses. > Entrepreneurs use their imagining skills to delve into their creative powers and come up with new insights and discoveries. > Entrepreneurs pay enormous attention to detail and self-discipline. > Entrepreneurs develop their inner life (their conscious awareness through meditation, etc.) because they realize that abundance and the richest experiences come from within themselves. > Entrepreneurs have an adventurous, creative, interesting, stimulating, and restful life outside of their business.

Get Insured FastBusinessInsurance.com, a web portal owned by Sadler & Company and specializing in small business insurance, now offers nail salon insurance policies in all 50 states. The types of policies available include general liability, workers’ compensation, crime, and property. Nail salons can complete an online application and get a quote from an A-rated carrier. “Nail salons face a variety of risks,” says John Sadler, president of Sadler & Company. “For example, customers could become injured on the salon’s premises due to slips and falls; customers could also become victims of infections or chemical injuries due to improper nail care services, exposing the nail salon to liability. The nail salon employees themselves could be injured while providing services, exposing the company to workers’ compensation liability. There are also possibilities of fraud, vandalism, robbery, and burglary at nail salons and it’s important that these providers are covered with the right type of policy.” For more information, go to www.fastbusinessinsurance.com/ types/nail-salon or contact John Sadler at (803) 254-6311.

British Beauty App Pinpoints Nearest by English chain salon owner Tony Teano, a new iPhone app, titled Salon Created The Daily Nail, offers tourists visiting England a quick and convenient way to find the nail salon nearest to their exact location. This means consumers all across the country can trigger their phones’ GPS to locate the nearest salons to them, book emergency appointments, and even get directions. The app currently stores the details of 1,200 nail salons. It will soon be available for the Blackberry and Android markets. >>>

{nails file} in memoriam Kenneth Reiner

Kenneth Reiner who, with his wife Dottie, co-founded salon furnishings and accessories manufacturer Kayline Enterprises, died on September 21, 2011, at the age of 95. Reiner, with a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s to work in the aerospace industry. He had a lot of innovative ideas that leave a legacy even through the present day, including Lady Ellen Klippies hair-styling tool and his founding of a nonprofit school called The Midtown School in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood. He co-founded Kayline when he was 58. Kayline’s products, which include pedicure storage furnishings, manicure tables, and rollabouts, are designed and manufactured within the United States. He will be missed.

Ken Cassidy

Jim George

Back in the mid-1980s Jim George’s W.I.N.B.A. Show in Anaheim, Calif., set the standard for trade shows in the industry, and the competitions attracted hundreds from all over the country — including me. Boasting huge fi ve-foot competition trophies and exciting awards presentations with Tammy Taylor, to name just one, competitors such as Tom Holcomb competed at W.I.N.B.A for many years. Long after most independent trade shows ran their course, Bob Upshaw, the owner of Kupa, and I would visit Jim at his office on Friday afternoons from time to time and talk about the old days when Jim was a cop in Las Vegas back when the mafia was in control. Jim was one of the last real founders of the nail business, and for those who have been around since that time, we’ll fondly remember Jim and the good old days. You will be missed, Jim George. — Vicki Peters

A salon owner, licensed cosmetology instructor, industry advocate, and president of Kassidy’s Salon Management Consulting Company, Ken Cassidy passed away in October. He was a frequent contributor to NAILS on the topic of employees/booth rental/ contract labor issues — a subject about which he was passionate. Salon owner Reneé Borowy of VIP Salon & Spa in Riverview, Mich., wrote this remembrance of him. “I met Ken Cassidy more than 17 years ago. I was going through a very hard time with my salon, which had been incorrectly classifi ed as having independent contractors by a CPA firm. The government had gotten involved and it was way over my head. I was introduced to him through NAILS Magazine. Ken was in the middle of a project but made time to help in any way that he could. He spent hours with me helping to create a plan for survival of my company. He was always gracious and always there for others. He himself was a very successful businessman. I was shocked and upset to hear the news that he passed. Ken was ‘cutting edge’ and way before his time with salon industry regulation. Ken and his legacy will be valued now and in the future.” — Reneé Marie Borowy

2 top5 NAIL COMPETITORS

Taking part in a competition takes courage and determination. Just waiting for the results is nerve-wracking in itself, but in the end, competing is worthwhile — for many reasons. That’s why we encourage all nail technicians to compete. You may even see your name on our Top 25 list. Each month, winners from participating shows are added to NAILS’ Top 25 ranking. First place earns 6 points, second earns 5 points, and third earns 4 points. For SuperPoints competitions, point scores are doubled (for veteran or master divisions) and fourth place earns 6 points. If you have questions regarding your points, call (310) 533-2457 or e-mail judy.lessin@bobit.com. All placements must be verified by show sponsors. SuperPoints Competitions for the 2010-2011 competition year are as follows: > Beauty Expo – Long Beach, October 23-24 > ISSE Long Beach, January 28-30 > Premiere Orlando, June 2-4 > IBS Las Vegas, June 9-12

{on the road}

Nail techs Tara Cook (left) and Sierra Mills (right) treated us to pedicures and owner Neva Spurgeon (second from right) welcomed us in to her salon. [inset] Associate publisher Michelle Mullen (right) and I hiked to the top of Smith Rock (it was a solid three-hour hike) the day before our pedicures. So the pampering was appreciated more than usual.

Hip Chicks Salon In the small town of Redmond, Ore., this cozy salon in a converted house makes you feel like a neighbor just popping in to chat over some coffee. BY HANNAH LEE

WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? Located in Redmond, Ore., population 18,000, Hip Chicks Salon caters mostly to local clients, but they also see out-of-towners visiting the nearby golf resorts, national forest, and state parks. The quaint area reflects a close-knit community where people know their neighbors. The salon, a few streets over from “downtown” Redmond in a more residential area, is no different. Surrounded by houses and other boutique businesses, everyone seems to know everyone else. A full-service hair, nail, and waxing salon, Hip Chicks has been open for five years.

SEPARATE, BUT TOGETHER There are three nail techs at the salon, all of whom are booth renters. Two of them, including my tech Sierra Mills, also do hair. As booth renters, the techs set their own hours and prices (which they come up with collectively) and purchase their own products. Mills and Tara Cook, who gave associate publisher Michelle Mullen her pedicure, use a variety of products but seem to favor mostly CND products, including Shellac. The techs offer acrylics and gels in addition to natural nails. Cook has a solid pink-and-white business, with many regulars opting for the classic French.

BUILDING A BUSINESS Newbies at this salon, Mills and Cook are building their clientele by word of mouth, through Facebook marketing, and by networking with existing hair clients. The entire team has meetings where they share ideas to help bring clients in. Our pedicures were offered in this cute, custom-built area. Owner Neva Spurgeon says nail services make up about a third of the salon’s business. While she lets the nail techs run their own business, she does ask that they ask clients to book their next appointments when they check out.

FUN FACTS >

Hip Chicks’ website boasts that the salon is about “luxury without ego” and they strive for exceptional customer service in a non-pretentious environment. The salon’s home-like exterior makes you feel like you’re just popping in to see a neighbor. > The owner of the coffee shop next door makes frequent stops in the salon to take orders for specialty tea and coff ee drinks. He even brought over some tasty crackers and locally made jam for us to try when we were getting our pedicures. > Owner Neva Spurgeon spent three years waiting for something to become available on the street where the salon is located. Originally, they were going to remodel the original house, but because of structural issues they ended up having to destroy the building and apply for a new construction permit.

The Butterfly Effect 1

2

3

Angie Roman of Chicago shows how she makes these marbleized butterfly designs that have fluttered their way into becoming a client favorite. The key to creating this perfect marble effect is to make sure the coat of polish is wet while dragging the colors to create the wings. You will need a striper nail art brush and some polish to complete this look. When choosing colors, allow your imagination to run wild, but Roman offers these words of advice: Choose two colors for your butterfly, and then choose a background color. Make sure all three colors will complement one another. Roman chose a light transparent pink for her background and purple and pink shades for the wings. Before starting, make sure the two colors for the wings are already open because you will need to work quickly before the polish begins to dry. 1. Apply two coats of background polish on all 10 nails. Apply your first wingcolor choice in the form of a curved line. Apply your second wing-color choice right next to it, and leave a space so you can repeat the curved lines as a mirror image. 2. Take your striper brush and very lightly pull your brush through both colors, stopping in the middle of the empty space. Repeat this to fill out the wing design, and make sure to angle the lines toward the middle so they meet in the center. The lines should all meet in the center of the empty space you left. 3. Once your wings are marbleized on all the nails, create the detail for your butterfly by painting the body and outlining the butterfly for a better look. >>> DECEMBER 2011

Will the new LED lamps work with regular UV gels such as IBD, CND, or Star Nail, or does it only cure hybrid gels such as Gelish, Shellac, Gellac and other soak-off gels? There are a wide variety of UV LED lights on the market at the moment and the differences between each of these lights is signifi cant. This great variety of UV LED’s makes it impossible to answer this question adequately, but the fastest and most secure answer is that they will not cure all of the soft and hard gels on the market. Each manufacturer sells a light unit and a gel for that light unit. It is best advised that at this time, please use the light that is recommended for that gel. You can always call the gel manufacturer to ask if their gel will cure in a specific UV LED light. They may have already tested their gel with that specifi c light and be able to give you a suitable answer. — Jim McConnell is the president of Light Elegance.

nails for almost two weeks. Clients will love the high-gloss finish, and Gel Art also comes in a range of other colors. 1. Prep the nails by sanitizing hands, pushing back cuticles, shaping the nails, buffing with a buffing band, and wiping the nail with cotton and alcohol. 2. Apply Gel Art Base and cure for 30 seconds under a UV light. 3. Apply White onto the nail tip and seal the edges. Do not cure. 4. Hold a gel brush at a 90° angle and draw the smile line. Clean the brush with lint-free wipes and repeat if the smile line is not perfect. Cure for 60 seconds under a UV light. 5. Apply Gel Art New Again #14 on the entire nail. Do not cure. 6. Use a short hair gel brush to remove the pink gel only on the white tip area. This will make the white appear whiter and help you achieve a uniform thickness. Cure for 60 seconds under a UV light. 7. Apply Top Gel and cure for 30 seconds under a UV light. Wipe off the tacky residue with alcohol and a lint-free wipe. 8. To soak off, use Gel Art’s new Gel-Off clips. The clips fit snugly around the nail tip and hold the acetone only on the nail bed to remove the gel polish without foil. One size fits all, and the clips are acetone-resistant and can be washed thoroughly.

That’s what happened when Jennifer Mather of Polished Nail Design Group in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, came in to do this month’s cover. Mather has been a CND education ambassador since 1999 and when we first contacted her, she sent us a bunch of really cool designs. We were intent on having her use CND’s new Additives — a collection of 12 pure pigments and lustrous effects that can be blended into any CND sculpting powder, gel, or used as a topping for Shellac to create a custom fi nish. These are cosmeticgrade pure pigments that can be blended to create an array of colors. And they are great for creating sophisticated, fashion-forward nail art designs. While we’ve never met before, Mather has plenty of experience creating unique nail styles. A nail tech for about 16 years, she’s won many nail competitions in Canada, including the Contessa Nail Enhancement Artist of the Year in 2009. She’s also listed by BE! (Beauty Entertainment Magazine) as one of the top 40 North American nail technicians. For this month’s cover, Mather came up with a fun technique combining CND Retention+ liquid and powders, CND Black Pigment, Cerulean Blue Pigment Effect, Titanium Pearl Pigment Effect, and Velcro — yes, Velcro! With textures being all the rage this fall, what a perfect way to take fashion to the nails.

Here’s how you can do these nails: 1. Prep natural nails for enhancements. Sculpt a thin layer of clear Retention+ liquid and powder. 2. File the nails to desired length and shape. 3. Apply a thin layer of custom dark gray acrylic (Retention+ White Powder and CND Additives Black Pigment mixed) to one nail. 4. Using a small piece of Velcro, imprint the nail with the spiky side of the Velcro. Repeat dark gray and Velcro to finish all nails. 4a. This is what the nail will look like after the gray acrylic has dried with the Velcro imprint. 5. & 6. Using Cerulean Blue Pigment Effect, Titanium Pearl Pigment Effect and a dry brush, burnish the solid pigments randomly over the stippled nail surface. 7. Seal with Brisa Gloss, curing for two minutes.

Cover tech and CND education ambassador Jenn Mather created this month’s cool textured nails using CND’s new Additives collection and Velcro. The Canadian tech showed us a ton of great designs, but we loved this unique texture to go with our icy cover.

TECHNIQUE} Ornament All Over Again In keeping with this holiday season, skilled nail tech and team Odyssey competitor Tammi Merritt shows how she uses pieces of broken Christmas ornaments to make shimmering and sparkling nail enhancements. Merritt warns techs though to be careful when using the small pieces of grandma’s favorite “accidentally broken” ornament, as they can be sharp and scatter easily. 1.

Prep the nail plate and apply your form. Merritt used a cover pink with the reverse method to create the illusion of a longer nail bed, but these can also be done with a traditional application technique.

1

2

2. Put on a very thin layer of transparent acrylic along with a thin layer of a black, starting at the free edge and blending down over the transparent color to create more interest. 3. Begin applying pieces of the ornament. You can pick them up with a small wet bead of acrylic or place them with tweezers onto a spot of wet acrylic. You may need to break the pieces up even smaller by using pliers or rolling something heavy over the larger ones. Just be sure to do this in a deep cardboard or plastic box to contain any small pieces. 4.

Once all of the pieces of broken ornament are applied, cover the entire enhancement with clear acrylic. Or you can try using a clear gel to cover the enhancement and encase the glass pieces. Gels allow the detail to really show through, especially if the ornament has color variations or a design.

3 4

5. File, shape, and buff the nails. 6. Apply top gel and cure under a UV lamp for two minutes, and enjoy the new life you brought to something that was once broken and otherwise headed for the trash.

Shine On

At Well Polished in Katy, Texas, clients just might decide on their pedicure color from a glimpse of the salon’s chandelier. Handcrafted by Dr. Scott Balin, DC, as a grand opening gift to salon co-owners Donna Balin (his wife) and Chalanda Hook (his sister-in-law), the ceiling fixture is made of over 70 SpaRitual lacquer bottles. “We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the chandelier from ‘Where can I get one of these?’ to ‘How did anyone ever think of that?’” Donna Balin says. “It’s been a hit, but moreover fits right in our li’l spa that’s goal is to reduce, reuse, and recycle.” Like many of the other eco-friendly items at the salon, the chandelier was a found item (from a resale shop) that was then repainted and personalized. The colors can easily be changed by simply unscrewing the bottle top and replacing with the color of choice. >>> DECEMBER 2011

In a late-night soiree at the Moon Nightclub inside the Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas, there’s an event dubbed Bang Tuesdays! Hair Wars, which is an extraordinary hair design competition. When Headliners Salon in Las Vegas was chosen to be one of six salons to compete in the August 16 war, salon owner Tzigane Osborne put together a team of experts to create a whole look — including nail tech Joy Yavenue of Nails by Joy in Henderson, Nev. Playing to the theme of “Jerseylicious,” Tzigane came up with the idea of a long braid with fake sculpted hands going up it with accessories like combs, brushes, curling irons, mirrors, and jewelry incorporated throughout. Yavenue says, “The hands were the hardest part. We used Crayola Modeling Clay to create them. It was light and could be molded into place and dried solid overnight.” The fake hands were then covered with different colors and textures of hair, and, as the Jerseylicious finishing touch, Yavenue did 15 different nail art designs (one set for each fake hand). The designs included chandelier nails (inserting a crystal-studded ring into a hole drilled into the tip), freehand zebra print, and fl ared bling French looks. On the live model’s nails, Yavenue created long nails with inlaid photos of the Jerseylicious cast in the acrylic, plus inlaid large gold glitter into the nails. The Headliners team (which also included model Chelsea Ball and make-up artist Haley Buckner) won first place, and we wish them the best of luck at the finals this month!

Birds of a Feather Who says feathers are just for hair (and, well, birds, of course)? Not resourceful nail techs, who adapt the feather hair extensions craze to nail extensions. Here’s how.

Feather extensions for hair are such a hot trend, but why should hairstylists have all the fun? Inventive nail techs have been

experimenting with using feathers on clients’ nails too — with striking and colorful results. Nail tech Abby Metallic of Paryse’s Hair Extensions N Cosmetics in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, shares her step-by-step for creating these trendy nails. “I came across the idea of feather nails by working with two of my friends who own their own business making feather hair extensions and supplying over 300 salons.” (Her friends’ company is Feather Girlz by Jammin’ Jewelry, www. jamminjewelry.ca, which is happy to sell nail techs feathers for these nails.) Metallic charges C$50 (U.S. $48) for a set of feather nails. In addition to the feathers, you’ll need clear UV gels to create these nails. Metallic uses Gel-ous brand’s Flexi and Diamond Sealer. 1. Prep the nails, either with or without tips (shown with tips). 2. Apply Gel-ous Flexi first step gel to the nails. Don’t cure yet. 3. Let the client pick out the first feather, then use a manicure stick to apply it to the nail. 4. Carefully cut the feather at the free edge. 5. Use the manicure stick to straighten out the feather. Do this for all 10 nails. (Tip: Use different colors and patterns of feather on each nail to create a fun and funky overall look.) 6. Flash cure the nails in a UV lamp for 15 seconds. Apply Gel-ous Diamond Sealer gel to the nails. Cure for two minutes. Remove the sticky residue.

BUSINESS} Assistants Handle the Soak-Offs

The explosion of gel-polish means nail techs are busier than ever — and at the upscale Red Door Spas it means nail assistants are guaranteed a full day of soak-offs. Not all Red Door techs are lucky enough to have an assistant on hand. “We only have a few throughout our spas, mostly at very busy spas that do at least 125 gel-polish applications a month,” says Alisha Botero, Red Door’s national training director for nail services. “Our Westchester, N.Y., spa averages 200 gel-polish applications a month with eight technicians and one assistant.” The assistants — who are usually nail students or under a nail apprentice program — earn their keep by making it possible for the techs to fit in more services. “We book 15 minutes for a gel-polish soak-off and it is scheduled with the nail assistant,” says Botero. “In a full day, this can allow our working technicians 10 more service opportunities by not occupying their time with soak-offs.” The nail assistants also pitch in with a number of other duties to assist the technicians allowing them more time with guests, such as cleaning manicure stations and pedicure tubs, running the autoclave, refilling products, rolling hot towels, restocking terry towels, and keeping the department and polishes clean and organized. >>>

Know the Code

You’ve probably seen them and maybe even used them. Those square barcodes designed to be read by smartphones, QR codes are really just a way to get a lot of information into a little bit of space, says Melodie Hand, owner of Tickled Pink Salon in Clayton, N.C. Hand uses a code on her promotional items, sending potential new clients to the specials page on her website. “I went to qrstuff.com and set it up on their site — it was free. I put it on Tic Tac wrappers and mini matchbook files,” says Hand. “I give them away when I go to networking meetings and vendor events like local festivals. I use Tic Tacs and matchbook files because they are more memorable than just a business card.” She adds a phrase like “Scan me to find out more about Tickled Pink Salon” or “Scan me for current specials.” “I am in the process of putting it on a pink canvas handbag along with my logo and phone number,” she adds.

Accept Credit Cards Anywhere Mobuyle enables nail techs to accept credit, debit, and gift card payments through their smartphones or mobile devices. If Stampt has its way, paper loyalty cards will soon be a thing of the past. Stampt is a smartphone-based loyalty card service that rewards frequent visitors. The app is free to download from the Apple App Store and allows clients to have their loyalty rewards cards (such as buy 10 get one free) on their smartphones rather than carrying multiple paper cards. Clients simply pull out their smartphones at the end of the service and scan the Stampt Quick Scan Card available near the register. Stampt records their visit and purchase, and stamps their digital card. Each merchant card and offer is unique and branded for that merchant. The service is free to merchants and provides them with analytics regarding their loyalty programs. For more information, go to www.stampt.com and ďŹ ll out a short registration form.

For my birthday this year, a client got me a gift card to Starbucks, but I was really touched by the handmade birthday card telling me I had become one of her best friends and that she didn’t know how to thank me enough for always making her feel “fierce and fabulous.”

Heather McDaniel Master Designs, Pensacola, Fla.

What’s the nicest thing a client has ever said to you?

on our last appointment she told me how much she loved my pedis and how gentle I was and how good her feet always felt. And then she told me what kept her coming back was my company! She thanked me for always listening and connecting with her. She was lonely and looked forward not to our appointments, but to our visits.

Natalie Borquez I had a set of sisters come in for manicures — the fi rst time for both of them. One of the ladies picked out a bright red Gelish color. The next day her husband came by the shop to tell me how beautiful his wife’s nails were and to thank me for making her feel beautiful. It flattered me since most guys don’t pay that close attention to women’s nails.

Megan Clingenpeel Sassy’s Salon, Delphi, Ind.

When I was informing a long-time client that I was relocating more than 800 miles away, she said, through tears and following some other very nice things, “Lori, you are not just a nail girl to me.” Perhaps that is the nicest thing, because none of them are ever just clients to me.

“You are, like, the ‘nail whisperer.’”

Michell Sierra Gorgeous Hair Nail Body, Johannesburg, South Africa

So many compliments to choose from but a few that stand out are: “How much for the therapy session?” “You’re like family!” And then I had two very special clients: A man called the salon and asked for pedicure prices, then asked for the cost if he only had one leg. I told him very politely that it would cost half. Later that week, he showed up and thanked me for being the only professional who didn’t laugh at his inquiry and treated

Michelle Conde Nails by Michelle, Miami

I once had a client who was dying, and one day as she was walking to the door to leave she turned to me and said, “I just want you to know how much I appreciate you.” I had a lump in my throat as it hit me this was the last time I would see her, and sure enough she passed away a couple of days later. I had done her French manicure for her funeral and didn’t even realize it.

Cindy Walston Portland, Ore.

A friend of mine overheard two women complimenting each other’s toenail art. After assuring each other that each had the best nail tech in town, they discovered they were both my clients.

Quiz:

Are You a Good Boss?

Congratulations, it’s your salon. So how do you lead your little slice of heaven? Take our quiz to see how you stack up when there is a wrinkle in the plan. BY ERIN SNYDER DIXON

2

You have a booth renter who is late on the rent — again. You … a. Complain to the other booth renters and ask around to see if anyone they know is looking for a station to rent. b. Leave a sticky note on her station to remind her and give her nasty looks to let her know you mean business. c. Have a private conversation with the booth renter to work out a solution and follow up with a professional letter.

One of your employees comes to you to complain that another technician is poaching her clients. You …

4

a. Can you get copies of your client information from your previous salon without them finding out? b. How fast can you do a pedicure? c. How would you describe the ultimate client experience?

5

3

a. Go directly to the offending nail tech and let her know Mrs. Smith doesn’t appreciate her potty mouth. b. Start fining technicians when they use foul language. c. Come up with a strategy that encourages positive exchanges in the salon. The technicians don’t really need to know who it was that complained. The important thing is to create a great experience for all patrons.

It’s staff development time. You want to hold a special inhouse training session. You … a. Design and deliver the program yourself. You are the boss and know it all, so who better? b. Use this opportunity to bring up each person’s weaknesses and address them as a group. c. Bring in an expert to help facilitate the program. Having an objective third party may help staff members open up and share the new ideas.

a. Call some of the technicians’ clients to get to the bottom of things. b. Tell the complaining tech to put on her big girl panties and deal. c. Take the opportunity to remind all employees of the booking policies during the next staff meeting. After all, you are a team.

You are interviewing potential team members or booth renters. Which would be the most revealing question to ask?

A fellow nail professional in the salon is going through a rough time personally. You … a. Tell everyone the inside scoop on what’s going on with the technician. b. Tell the technician to leave her personal problems at home — after all, you aren’t her mother. c. Have a private talk with the technician to see what adjustments can be made to lessen the impact to her job performance. Allow the technician to decide how much and when to disseminate information to peers. Reassure her that her privacy is important. >>>

Your biggest day-to-day concern is … a. Having a place for your friends to work. b. Making sure everyone likes you. c. Making sure the business is healthy and you’re being fair. It’s sometimes hard since we are friends here.

8

You are expanding the salon to include a number of new booth rental suites. The existing booth renters are concerned this will mean less business for each of them. You … a. Tell them it’s none of their business. b. Count on replacing some of the existing booth renters when they get mad and leave. c. Realize change is uncomfortable and host the rst fi annual business-building conference. You plan on inviting networking and ad pros, community leaders, and industry experts. After all, as each of the renters’ businesses grows, it attracts more traffic to your location.

9

After an unpopular announcement you are faced with the threat of a walkout. You … a. Tell them not to let the door hit them on the way out. b. Threaten booth renters with legal action and warn the employees not to use you as a reference. c. Call a salon meeting so everyone can be on the same page. Calmly explain some of the key factors and how they impact employees/booth renters, then answer questions technicians may have. Reassure them that the success of the salon is number one and take suggestions to further deal with their concerns.

10 Being “the boss” means … a. I can do whatever I want! b. If you don’t like it you can leave. c. I have many viewpoints to consider when deciding how to proceed. I know everyone won’t always be happy but at least they know I’m looking out for them.

A

MOSTLY A’S: Really? We know you didn’t really say that. OK, you are kidding. But seriously, building a strong team starts with trust and respect. Remember the days when you worked for someone else? How did you feel? Now use that as a starting point as you establish a winning team.

B

MOSTLY B’S: You may be the boss but a lesson in tact may be in order. Next time, take a deep breath and think carefully before responding. It’s OK to seek the advice of a mentor to help navigate some of the delicate areas. Ordering products and writing checks is the easy part; dealing with personnel issues as the boss — not so easy.

C

MOSTLY C’S: You’re a champ! You’ve mastered some of the tricky areas that appear as you lead a diverse group of creative people to a common goal. You realize it’s not a popularity contest … and that’s OK. You are fiercely protective of the people in your charge and your business. Go team!

With 2,200 square feet of space, the day spa off ers a variety of open sitting areas for clients to relax, receive treatments, and escape the hustle and bustle of Houston.

Affordable Luxury in Houston Houston-based Polished Day Spa keeps customer service and creativity at the top of its priority list as owner Sharia Castillo expands the emergent spa’s already diverse menu. BY BRITTNI RUBIN Polished Day Spa is already leaving its mark on Houston despite being just over a year

old. According to owner and salon veteran Sharia Castillo, maintaining customer satisfaction is the secret to its success. Castillo and her employees continually expand Polished’s service menu to wow clientele, demonstrate originality, and stay on top of current trends. The spa itself is situated in a busy location, so Castillo had to do everything she could to make Polished stand out. She chose simple yet elegant gray and white decor to fi ll the salon, giving it a modern fl are. And chic mirrored furniture lines the walls, making the spacious salon feel even roomier.

“I just wanted a different, classy space that isn’t cluttered,” Castillo says. “I wanted a place where everyone can mingle and see each other, but still have privacy for their own services.” Polished nurtures relaxation and has become a fashionable spot for locals to escape the hustle and bustle of Houston.

Some of Polished’s most popular treatments include the Citrus Polished Pedicure and the Shellac Manicure, both of which have been modified by the salon. The Citrus Pedicure, designed by Castillo, uses homemade salts and scrubs, in addition to lemon-scented soaps, essential oils, and lotions. This specialty service is completely free of

harsh chemicals. Polished also discovered a noteworthy way to perfect its Shellac Manicure. Through trial and error, Polished employees discovered an out-of-the-box, and greatly effective, heating method to get the most out of its gel-polish bottles: coffee warmers! “We place the Shellac bottle on the coffee warmers, and it thins the product enough where you can just shake it — it’s so easy,” Castillo says. Another unique manicure service, which earned Polished a cover story in the Houston Chronicle is the spa’s “Newspaper Nails.” It’s a basic manicure, but with personalized newspaper clippings imprinted on the nail surface after the drying process. While Newspaper Nails are becoming a popular trend, Polished is the only salon in the Houston area to offer it. One of Castillo’s biggest tricks to staying original and in-the-know about nail fashion is surfing the Internet. “I’m always online seeing what everyone’s doing and offering,” says Castillo. “I subscribe to so many nail blogs, and we all read about fashion shows here too — it’s how we learn about a lot of trends.” Polished itself now has a strong online presence, according to Castillo, who often posts her findings on the spa’s Facebook page to see which nail trends are a “hit” or “miss” among locals.

NEVER SAY NO More than anything, Castillo values immaculate customer service. She considers it the most important business tactic she acquired during the 10 years she spent in the salon industry prior to opening Polished.

“Once you establish a relationship with your clients — asking them about their weekend and remembering details about what they like — they’ll feel like you’re a friend and want to keep coming back,” Castillo says. “Really, it’s 70% personality and 30% skill.” Whether it’s a customer’s fifth or 15th appointment at Polished, Castillo asks her employees to treat them like it’s their fi rst time in the salon. She believes that her staff’s unfailing friendliness is both what sets Polished apart from other salons in the area and generates the relaxed spa atmosphere it’s known for. Castillo and her employees also try not to say “no” to their clients, even if it means going beyond the scope of services Polished offers. “Whatever they need, whatever they want, if I can do it, I’ll do it for them,” Castillo says. “I have no problem being there for my clients.” Each customer is offered a complimentary cup of tea or coffee and goodies (like cupcakes or M&M’s) upon entering the spa. Castillo says she has even made dinner reservations for clients. “It’s more like doing a small favor for a friend,” says Castillo, who shares this mentality with her staff. “I’ve always wanted to work somewhere really focused on customer service; somewhere that wouldn’t just say it, but actually do it. And that’s where Polished comes in.” Additionally, Polished aims to constantly expand its service list to meet customers’ needs. Per request, personalized “vajazzling” has become available at Polished to accompany bikini or Brazilian waxes. The spa

also offers sunblock lotion during manicures for clients who are worried about using UV lamps. But the majority of Polished’s business is comprised of manicures and pedicures, a full wax service menu, facials, massages, eyebrow and eyelash tinting, children’s nail services, and private parties are available as well.

A PLACE FOR EVERYONE After developing an allergy to harsh salon chemicals, Castillo decided to make Polished Day Spa a place where organic products rule. She wants everyone — including vegans and pregnant women — to be able to enjoy her spa’s services without fear. “If there’s an organic product I can fi nd that’s going to work just as well, we defi nitely will get it,” Castillo says. You also won’t find acrylics at Polished because of the fumes they emit. Instead, customers can receive a variety of gel manicures and pedicures. Polished also tries to respect individual privacy with a myriad of different room accommodations. Because it is on the more spacious side, Polished has a main salon with various nooks and crannies furnished with comfortable chairs and couches. A large round table in the center of the room is a popular spot for clients to socialize and indulge in assorted complimentary snacks. There is also a private pedicure suite in the rear of the salon complete with padded luxury chairs and flat-screen TV monitors. Clients can request to receive their treatments there at no additional cost. And of course, there are smaller

individual rooms for waxing, massages, and facials.

LUXURY WITH A SMALL PRICE TAG

Private rooms in the rear of the salon for waxing, massages, and facials have a serene ambiance.

Polished is located in Upper Kirby, a wealthier part of Houston; however, Castillo did not want to let this factor limit her clientele. While Polished does offer high-end services, Castillo has created a menu with a diverse price range to cater to clients on all different budgets. “I’ve researched a lot of my competitors and there are a lot of markets they leave out whenever they set their prices too high,” says Castillo. “I decided to come in a few dollars under them hoping to be able to offer affordable luxury for everybody.” Manicures range from $20-$50, pedicures from $25-$58, and facials start at $70. Polished started as appointmentonly, but after getting a large volume of walk-ins, the salon now caters to everyone’s busy schedules or last-minute mishaps rather than being exclusive. “Our location is on a busy main street, and we are getting two or three walk-ins a day,” says Castillo. “This caught me off guard, so I had to restructure to accommodate this business.” As the salon is just in its first year of operation, Castillo has high hopes and big plans for the future. Polished is looking to develop its retail section, which currently offers the organic products used in the salon’s treatments. Castillo is also integrating more training for her nail techs through workshops conducted by product lines, nail distributors, and even the salon’s master pedicurist, who specializes in pedicures for diabetic, geriatric, and cancer clients. Although Polished’s business model is one centered on constant expansion to meet customers’ needs, the salon is still able to maintain a laid-back atmosphere that Houston residents are drawn to. “We’re not snooty, we’re really easygoing and fun, and we try to be social with our clients,” says Castillo. “The employees enjoy that too! I think it feels like family.”

Genadur is the first FDA-approved treatment to help strengthen fragile, brittle nails. According to manufacturer Medimetriks Pharmaceuticals, Genadur helps improve the condition with a once-daily brush-on application that may start showing results in as little as 14 days. While brittle nails may be the result of exposure to solvents in nail products, they may also be the symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as psoriasis and fungal infection. “While the underlying conditions leading to brittle nails need to be treated, Genadur is the first product that can restore the nail, both improving its appearance and protecting it from further damage,” says Robert Marinaro, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist. “With studies showing a 90% improvement in nail fragility after 14 days and an 85% reduction in splitting, patients with fragile and splitting nails have a solution for managing these frustrating conditions.” Genadur is used once daily, preferably at bedtime, and can be washed offwith water in the morning.

That Fungus May Not Be Your Fault It might not be your fault if one of your clients gets a foot fungus. In an article on AOL Healthy Living titled “Is Your Salon Causing Toenail Fungus?â€? Dr. Robert A. Kornfeld, founder of the Institute for Integrative Podiatric Medicine, suggests that toenail fungus in actually the result of an internal fungal infection. Dr. Kornfeld explains that in order for a fungus to take hold, two conditions have to be present: the nail bed has to have been cut and the client would have to have a compromised immune system that’s unable to ďŹ ght off the infection. “Since it is more common than not to see multiple toenails infected with fungus, can we blame your nail salon for causing injury to multiple toenails?â€? he asks. Instead he believes that fungal infections of the nails are actually a symptom of an internal infection. “One of the ways the human body deals with these organisms is to discharge them. Since your skin (and skin structures) is the largest organ of elimination, it is not surprising that skin and toenails are frequently affected,â€? he writes. Ultimately Dr. Kornfeld concludes that toenail infections are the result of an excess of fungi in the gastrointestinal tract that leads to eventual discharge into toenails. I have a client who has “hooked nailsâ€? where they curve sharply downward in the shape of her fingers. If she has acrylics put on will it grow that way? Or grow straight? I’m not sure what she can wear for her nail condition. It sounds like you are describing pincer nails, where the nail has a transverse overcurvature and progressively pinches the nail bed toward the ďŹ nger tip. Your client should see a dermatologist as there are a lot of causes of this condition — some hereditary and some acquired — and she would beneďŹ t from a medical evaluation. Acquired pincer nails can be caused by tumors or cysts as well as many other causes. She would beneďŹ t from keeping her nails short and cutting them straight across as opposed to on a curve in order to prevent them from embedding into the nail fold. — Dana Stern, M.D. is a board-certiďŹ ed dermatologist specializing in nails. She works in private practice in New York City.

HEALTH} under the microscope

Ingrown Toenails Common but painful, ingrown nails are often the result of poor care — and infection may follow.

An ingrown nail is a condition where the nail penetrates the surrounding skin. An ingrown nail usually affects only one side of the finger or toe. Once the nail has penetrated the skin, bacteria can get into the cut and the area is at risk for infection. Clients may complain of warmth, tenderness, swelling, or redness.

What is it?

Ingrown nails can be caused by incorrect shaping or filing. Often, a part of the nail is filed, but a pointed edge remains on the outside of the nail. That edge acts as an irritant, causing the body to respond to what it perceives as an invader. The body responds first by sending blood to the area, which creates heat and swelling. Left untreated, the nail will grow into the swelled skin that surrounds it. Ingrown nails can also occur when clients are persistent nail biters. Trauma, injury, or constant pressure (such as from running or too-tight shoes) can also cause an ingrown toenail. Finally, some people are predisposed to ingrown nails because of the natural shape of their nails or due to the “fleshy” nature of their toes and fingers.

How do you get it?

If an ingrown nail is not yet infected, it may respond to at-home or salon care. However, if a person with poor circulation, a heart condition, or diabetes has an ingrown nail, she should see a doctor immediately. On a person without medical conditions, doctors recommend a foot soak to relieve some of the pain and an application of a topical antibacterial cream. While the foot is soaking, it can be beneficial to push the skin away from the nail. This can ease the pain of swelling and the pain caused from the nail cutting into the skin. If the area is infected, a doctor’s visit is required. The doctor may prescribe a topical or oral antibiotic, or in severe cases, she may need to perform surgery.

How is it treated?

If the client has diabetes, is on heart medication, or is prone to ingrown nails, send her to the doctor for treatment. If the area is infected, again refer her to a doctor. If it’s a clean, uninfected area, soak the nail in warm water mixed with antibacterial soap and gently push the skin away from the nail. Try to find the end of the nail to make sure no small point remains at the edge. If you see a small point, clip or file it away. Shape the nails to reflect the nail bed’s natural shape. If the nail has penetrated and broken the skin, apply a topical antibiotic like Neosporin and a Band-Aid. Instruct clients to avoid wearing tight or narrow shoes until the irritation resolves. Clients can soak the ingrown nails at home a couple of times a day.

What can a tech do?

Don’t believe the home-remedy myths that circulate about ingrown nail treatment. Rumors include cutting a “V” into the center of the nail and stuffing cotton under the ingrown nail. This could create larger problems if the “V” is cut incorrectly or if the cotton harbors germs that could cause infection. Instead, leave these treatments to doctors and stick with proper filing methods and warm foot baths.

HEALTH} Ergonomic Basics for Nail Techs The Nail Manufacturers’ Council offers nail professionals these basic tips to prevent or eliminate the injuries, pain, and discomfort sometimes associated with salon work. Working ergonomically can eliminate muscle strain, benefitting both your physical and psychological health.

IMPROVING BODY ERGONOMICS Posture and position are important, whether you are sitting at the nail table or in front of your client giving a pedicure. Paying attention to how you perform these tasks can prevent many injuries (e.g., lower back, neck, wrist, and shoulder pain). > Keep both the task and tools directly in front. Do not favor or lean to one side. > Avoid reaching more than 12 inches and keep forearms parallel with the floor (neutral position) at the side. > Choose a high-quality swivel chair with a seat at least one inch wider on each side than hips/thighs and properly padded so that it doesn’t create pressure points (behind the knees, for instance). > When sitting, always keep the spine in a neutral position — at a 90-degree angle, not leaning forward or backward. The head, neck, and body should face forward without twisting or hunching. The backrest should provide support for the lower back. > Avoid twisting the neck (for example, don’t cradle a cell phone with your head and shoulders). The head should be kept upright and shoulders relaxed. > Avoid leaning too far forward while performing manicures or pedicures. Do not bend the back forward more than 30 degrees or the neck more than 45 degrees. > Raise and position the client’s hands or legs and feet to prevent bending or stretching forward or supporting feet with your own body. A recliner chair works well and supports the client’s legs in the best position for servicing. > Adjust chair height so your thighs are parallel to the floor with your feet flat. If necessary, use a footrest to keep the feet flat and don’t cross the legs or sit sideways in the chair. > Wrist and hands should be kept straight, not bent or twisted sideways. > When holding a client’s hand or finger, position it so that the pressure from grasping is minimized; a relaxed, minimal hold will lessen the strain. > Gently move your client’s hand rather than tilting your head. In order to prevent neck strain, consider placing a client’s hand on a rest that elevates the hand to prevent forward tilt of the head and neck. > Minimize pressure points, avoid placing arms on the edge of the table and use a foam tube/padding on the sharp edge of the nail table or as an arm or elbow rest. >>>

PREVENTING LIFTING AND MOTION INJURY Understanding how to lift and move correctly are important keys to preventing injury. Repetitive motion or cumulative trauma disorders can be caused by using the same motions over and over, placing strain on the body, joints, muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue. Problems can also result from incorrect twisting. > To prevent back injury, salon professionals should avoid lifting anything heavy (e.g., more than 15 lbs.). > When lifting, tuck in the stomach and use the abdominal muscles and legs, instead of the back muscles. > Avoid overextending the arms, for instance when reaching over your head to put something on a shelf. Use a step stool or ladder. > Sit with the client’s foot directly in front of you and keep it close to the body when lifting. > Use an adjustable pedi -chair or place the client’s foot on a pillow raised to just above elbow level. > While performing a manicure or pedicure, minimal force should be used. If more force is needed, it should only be done for short time periods, then rest. > When using tools, minimize strong gripping or pinching and take rest breaks. Use padded files and tools to decrease the need to use a hard pinch or grip. > Equipment should properly fit the hand and be kept in optimal condition (e.g., sharpen nippers). > Keep repetitive motions like filing to a minimum and take short rest breaks to prevent a repetitive motion disorder. > Avoid repetitive flexing of the wrist by holding it straight. Bend elbows and shoulders rather than your wrist. > Avoid using electric files for extended periods without rest breaks since even this minimum vibration can contribute to injury.

OTHER IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER > Using lighting bright enough for the task, but avoiding too much glare will reduce eyestrain. > Blink frequently or use eye drops to keep eyes moist and occasionally look away from subject to prevent eye fatigue. > Take frequent breaks, change positions frequently, and don’t hold any posture or position for long periods. > Use continual flowing movements when performing massage techniques to keep your muscles from tightening and becoming sore. > When massaging, use the heel of your hand and pad of your thumb since they are stronger than your fingers and use both hands equally. > Slow down, if necessary, to avoid injury, pain, or discomfort and eliminate unnecessary steps. > Don’t over-apply artificial nail products; the more you apply, the more you have to file. > Using a new file on each client will reduce your muscle strain and save time. > If taking a break isn’t possible, do gentle stretching motions in between clients; stretch the neck, raise the arms and stretch, open the hands and stretch the fingers, stretch the back and rotate the wrists. > Hand-washing between clients is considered a necessary break and a great time to stretch. Always pay attention to discomfort. > Don’t ignore pain; take steps to alleviate it and develop a regular routine for stretching. Try stretching between clients, or change position between clients. > If pain or discomfort continues, seek the advice of a medical professional. > A regular exercise program that includes core stability exercises may reduce the risk of workplace injuries. Consult your physician before beginning an exercise program. www.nailsmag.com/fifi/23249

HEALTH} secret ingredient

wraps Wraps first came into the professional nail industry about 30 years ago to help strengthen nail enhancements, and they continue to be used by nail techs today. They are usually made of linen, silk, or fiberglass, and they can be embedded within gels, acrylics, and even on top of natural nails when sealed with resin.

1

Silk: Silk wraps offer a natural look for nails while providing strength and flexibility. They are made with traditional silk products, which have been used for centuries starting with the Chinese who first started harnessing the power of silkworms back in the 27th century B.C. Silkworms are fed bushels of mulberry leaves to gorge on; after, they spin cocoons of liquid silk that solidify upon contact with air. Silk farmers then harvest the cocoons and place them in boiling water to unwind the cocoons to produce continuous threads (thus killing the silkworms). Silk fiber is very strong and has a high absorbency property, which gives silk clothing fabrics their cooling effect in hot weather.

2

Linen: Linen wraps were the first wraps to appear in the nail industry. Legend has it that nail techs started cutting up tea bags to make the first linen-like nail wraps when they saw they could help reinforce the strength of clients with brittle nails. Linen is made from the flax plant, a tall slender plant native to the eastern Mediterranean all the way across to India. Although the term “linens” has become synonymous with most household woven fabrics of similar material like cotton, linen is produced from fibers in the flax plant stalk. As with silk, the linens are woven to varying thickness, length, and weave patterns to suit various industrial needs.

3

Fiberglass: Fiberglass wraps have become a popular choice among nail technicians as of late. The wraps work well with both acrylic and gel enhancements, as well as on natural nails with resin, and they offer the latest in technical innovation for strength and flexibility. Fiberglass is composed of a plastic polymer that is reinforced with a glass fiber. These glass fibers are very fine strips of glass that are extracted from melting glass and woven into a plastic matrix on a very small level to create fiberglass. The two materials work together to create a wrap that is strong in both compressive strength (pushing together) and tensile strength (pulling apart). Fiberglass in nails is extra thin, but larger strips of fiberglass provide important roles in a wide range of other industries, such as in gas tanks, surf boards, hockey sticks, boat hulls, and thermal insulation.

For a professional nail product manufacturer, making it on the top five list is a very validating moment in the spotlight. Ours are not “editor’s picks” or a “best of” roundup; they’re simply a snapshot in time telling us the products you and your peers love at this moment. So what are your favorite products? It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like... Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Winter Solstice, the winter holidays are a great time to bring joy and cheer to your salon. Clients appreciate the little decorative touches as much as they do the special holiday services or the gift bags. Just a little effort can quickly turn a first-year client into a life-long loyal. BY TIM CROWLEY

A

s the cold comes in during the winter months, the holidays become little moments of warmth for us to express our gratitude for everything we have in life. The feelings of love and family that exist in homes during this time can easily be carried over to the salon with the lightest of touches. From a profit standpoint, it can be an excellent way to entice customers with seasonal services like holiday-themed spa manis and pedis, gift certificate packages, and special group discounts. And on the personal level, it’s a great way for salons to show how much they appreciate their clientele and show how much pride and passion goes into their work every day. Salon business is often a close extension to the home, in that it’s a line of work where relationships easily form between clients and nail techs, and true bonds can begin to grow along with the professional connection. For many techs, their livelihood is founded on their regulars — the clients they’ve built a rapport with who come in every two

to three weeks for their mani-fill. The appreciation they each have for the other goes beyond that of a business obligation. Salon owner Vickie Foster of European Body Wraps in Olive Branch, Miss., says, “I have always felt that my salon owes its success to our clients. They could go to any salon to have their services performed, but they choose me.” And it’s with this spirit that holiday traditions have carried on in nail salons and will likely continue to thrive. Whether it is a simple decoration like a Christmas tree of nail art or a holiday-packed retail shelf that’s teeming with goodies that make registers sing, the point is to make sure your clients know you value them as people and appreciate their business. Your clients will likely be just as thankful to you for making the salon a place they’ve come to love. We asked salon professionals to tell us what makes it look a lot like Christmas at their salons. From nail art trees to custom-made goodie bags, these salons know how to celebrate the season.

European Body Wraps owner Vickie Foster (right) hands 13-year patron Brenda Carter a holiday gift bag. “I feel like I get extra special treatment during the holidays,” says Carter, “Even though I get special treatment every time I come in for a service. The extra thought really heightens my holiday spirit.”

Vickie Foster opened her quaint Mississippi salon in 1995. Her passion for nails and caring demeanor led to a surprise when her clients actually initiated her salon’s Christmas traditions in the early years by giving her gifts of thanks. “I thought I should be giving my clients gifts, for they give to me all year long — and so a tradition was born.” Foster soon began making her own gift bags to hand out to clients as a way of saying thank you for a wonderful year. The gift bags include simple travel-size skin care products and some polish, and when years are tough financially she hands out “Merry Christmas” coupons of 10% off any product or service. “I would say that is their favorite gift of all!” says Foster.

Lisa Anderson, Sparks, Nev.

The goodie bag is Anderson’s specialty. She has been giving these out for the past 18 years, making every year different with homemade skin care products she gets from a friend. Ranging from bath salts and body soaps to scrubs and lotions, Anderson has a knack for making well-presented gift bags that have become a client favorite. Each bag contains at least three items, and Anderson even includes new clients on these goodie bag giveaways. “I love my clients,” says Anderson. “They are like an extended family to me.” Clients are equally appreciative of Anderson, and she has many long-time regulars who have been with her for years. >>>

Bella Blanca Salon

Cindy Bosque Watson, Portland, Ore.

“Everyone should have a nail brush to scrub holiday overindulgence out from under their nails,” says Bosque. She gives out gift bags by placing them on a small tree she decorates, with one gift bag for each scheduled client that day. She also likes to offer free nail art, usually just the ring fingers, but she has some special clients who like to go all out for the holidays and wear full sets of Christmas-colored glitters. The gift bags typically include gift-size hand creams and a candy cane or two wrapped up in a holiday ribbon.

Cindy Bosque Watson sits in front of the gift bag tree she makes for her clients every year. Bosque also makes a nail art tree with samples of her designs and other small ornaments.

Nails Please by Janice Reams Janice Reams, Houston

Janice Reams first owned a salon in 1991, and, before selling it three years later, she learned how much she enjoyed decorating her salon for the seasons. When she became a booth renter, she wasn’t able to lock up her salon so her decorations became limited to little lights and ornaments around her booth. But now she has her own suite in a 60-room salon and spa building with her own lockable door, so she’s able to put up more decorations. She gives out gift bags starting two weeks before Christmas, which typically contain small packets of cocoa, ceramic mugs, pedicure creams, and lotions. One year Reams got adventurous and had her beer-brewing-enthusiast husband make a small batch of wine, which they bottled into gift-sized wine bottles with custom labels of “Merry Christmas from Nails Please.” Janice Reams decorates her suite with a small Christmas tree, lights, and a wreath on the door.

Valentine’s Salon & Day Spa Patti Valentine, Greencastle, Pa.

Patti Valentine is continuing a tradition she started many years ago when her salon was in her home. She made custom ornaments that she hung on a Christmas tree, and clients chose one for themselves to take home. Now the salon has eight employees, and many more clients, but the tradition is still alive and well with a large decorated tree in the reception area for clients to choose their ornament. According to Valentine’s daughter Jamie Hess, Greencastle, Pa., is a great place to live during the holiday season because of the outgoing show of spirit the town puts forth with its Christmas parade, street caroling, decorated trees, and horsedrawn carriages.

Alycia Barrett, Redding, Calif.

Alycia Barrett has always been known as a giving person, and when she opened Nail Candy a couple years ago, she fully embraced the giving spirit by not only gifting clients with $10 redeemable gift cards to any service or retail in her salon, but by also granting her staff of three booth renters free rent for the month of December. “Honestly I was shocked when Alycia told me about our Christmas gift,” says Nail Candy employee Jodi Anderson. Nail tech Regina Selig chimes in, “In my whole six years of being a nail tech, no shop owner has ever offered that.” “December in my opinion should be spent with more smiles and less stress, so as long as I am the proud owner of Nail Candy, December will be forever booth-rent free,” says Barrett.

MAKING THE MOVE TO

MOBILE

It’s easy to be a mobile tech when the only challenge is packing your supplies and driving to a client’s home, but what if you want a multi-service mobile spa? We spoke to women who made the plunge to find out how they got started. BY MICHELLE PRATT

SERVICES OFFERED: Manicures, pedicures, haircuts, waxing, facials BACKGROUND: Engineer, stage manager, nail tech REASON FOR GOING MOBILE: Simonides became concerned about job

security when she realized computers were taking over parts of her job. “I started to consider a career change and I tried to think of a way to make money doing what I love so it wouldn’t feel like work,” says Simonides. “I had loved art in school, but I knew I couldn’t go back that far. Then I thought of how much I love going into the salon. I always leave there feeling great. I wanted to make people feel like that.” Simonides went to school, earned her license, and began working. One day she asked another tech how long it took to build a clientele. “When she said five years, I decided I didn’t have time to wait for clients to come to me; I’d go to them,” she says. HOW IT WORKS: Simonides knew other mobile services were available, but no salon traveled as a self-contained business.” With some planning, investment, and hard work, Simonides opened her self-contained mobile spa. On the Go Spa is a 30-foot mobile home that has been converted into a salon with a nail table and stylist chair, plus an area for massage, waxing, and facials. Simonides works with corporations to schedule days where On the Go Spa rolls into the parking lot so employees can enjoy salon services on their breaks. “The corporations love it because it doesn’t cost them anything to bring me in, and they can tout it as a service they offer their employees,” she says. Simonides hires sub-contractors to avoid the hassle of employees, but she reverses the paradigm. “I give them the larger percentage because my overhead is low,” she says. Sub-contractors bring their own supplies when they come to work, or, in some cases, they store their own product on board. Simonides finds people to work with her both through her contacts from working in a salon and by word of mouth. She works mainly with three sub-contractors, scheduling events from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. when employees can take a break from work. “Each service is about 30 minutes, so we usually book six appointments per service provider,” explains Simonides. Most subcontractors work with her three hours a day, three days a week, plus do hair or nails outside of their work with On the Go Spa. Find out about franchise opportunities at www.onthegospa.com.

Most of Sara Tena’s clients opt for two or three services per guest. Woman can get very creative about the reasons to schedule a spa party. Here, The Pampered Self helps women celebrate a 40th birthday party and a pre-bridal party.

Sara Tena The Pampered Self Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. SERVICES OFFERED: Hair, makeup, manicures, pedicures, massage, facials, yoga BACKGROUND: Law and business REASON FOR GOING MOBILE: “I had so many gift certificates to the spa, and I had trouble finding

time to use them because I was a stay-at-home mom with young children,” says Tena. When the cards began to pile up, her husband suggested she ask the technicians to come to the house. Tena looked into it and realized there was a void in the market. “I realized many women were in my position, and I decided to start a business to bring spa services to clients,” she says. Tena was familiar with the responsibilities of an entrepreneur, because she had helped run her mother-inlaw’s business, so she took the plunge and opened the first mobile spa in Orange County. HOW IT WORKS: “I couldn’t provide services myself, because I’m not licensed,” explains Tena. “But very early on, I met a woman who did nails and hair, and she loved my idea. She talked to her friends, and they talked to their friends, and that’s how I built my network of techs.” Tena has about 35 people total who she can call, but she relies predominantly on about 12. Tena is clear about what she offers her contracted workers. She doesn’t guarantee a certain amount of work; the work is completely on-call. “I sit down for an interview before they ever work for me and I let them know how percentages are split on each service, what our guidelines are, and what it means to me to deliver the best possible experience to our clients,” says Tena. “If we decide to work together, I have them sign a contract with a confidentiality agreement.” In addition, though Tena carries liability insurance on the company, she requires each contractor to carry personal insurance. When a client calls to book an event, Tena discusses how many services the hostess would like each guest to receive (usually two or three). Once that is decided, the hostess talks to her guests to see which individual services they want to book. One may pick a pedi with a facial; another may want a mani and pedi. All appointments take 30 minutes, so from a scheduling standpoint, all services are equal. “Everyone tells the hostess, and then she calls me to give me a final count on the number of guests, and who needs manis, pedis, etc.,” says Tena. No changes can be made within 48 hours of the party. Tena’s organizational and managerial skills play out well at this point. She creates a spreadsheet of how many people are attending the event and which services are needed. Then she creates a schedule of who will receive what service with which tech at what time. This way she knows how many techs she needs. If more people choose pedicures than facials, she knows she will need more nail techs and fewer estheticians. An average party runs three to four hours and has 15 to 20 guests. On the night of the party, Tena arrives early to prepare the ambiance of the room with linens and other spa-like touches. Tena supplies items necessary to the party itself, such as towels and robes, but techs bring the supplies they need to perform the service. >>>

Because the party can be set up anywhere, guests enjoy a beautiful day outside while they are pampered.

Tena opened the Pampered Self when she realized how hard it was for mothers of small children to schedule spa appointments.

Carolyn McNairn has been in the nail industry for 25 years. Ten years ago, she opened Mobile Beauty in Ottawa, Canada. She received so many calls asking her how she did it that she developed a guide on CD titled, “How to Start a Mobile Spa Business.” The guide includes marketing tips, information on finding and retaining the right people, and business tools, such as pricing structures. The result is a superb natural oil that conditions nails and softens skin with a single drop. Our unique formula won’t promote lifting. After all, it’s from No Lift Nails, the industry leader for three decades. Available in 1/8 oz, 1 oz and 4 oz size, No Lift is a naturally rich cuticle oil for your customers and a rich source of profits for you.

be able to provide services to people who weren’t able to get to the salon: expectant mothers, people who had surgery, business travelers, etc. Plus, she wanted a way to educate little girls about nail care. What better way than a Little Ms. Priss Party? Now, about 25% of her business comes from one-onone services. Bridal and spa parties account for about 35% of bookings, and nearly 40% of her business is from corporate events. HOW IT WORKS: To book a party, a client contacts Fitts and they discuss services, rates, travel fees, and expectations. Fitts uses PayPal to generate an invoice, confirm scheduled appointments, and produce a contract including a list of services and terms and conditions. Once the client pays through PayPal, a confirmation e-mail is sent. Though payments are non-refundable, “Clients can reschedule and use funds toward services or gift certificates,” says Fitts. It’s relatively easy to find independent contractors for the parties because of the relationships Fitts has with other techs, and because of the reputation she has built through Manicures-n-Motion. “I am very specific when I call a tech for a job,” says Fitts. She lets techs know exactly what she expects and what the job pays. “Plus, I pay them right after the event, so they aren’t waiting for their money,” she says. To ensure quality products are being used, she provides all the products and supplies. “They just show up with their implements and a smile,” says Fitts. For spa parties, services are scheduled every half hour; parties last two to three hours. For corporate events Fitts may have to provide a service to 50 to 75 people, so she offers an abbreviated manicure where nails are filed, shaped, and buffed in only 15 minutes. “These are waterless manicures, but spa parties have the full service, where we use water and include a massage,” says Fitts. “The benefit of the mini-mani is that guests walk away feeling pampered and relaxed, and I need only three to four techs for two to three hours to take care of a whole conference of people.”

Amber Nicole Perez Spa Events NY Rochester, N.Y.

Guests wearing cozy spa gowns provided by Spa Events NY enjoy a laugh.

Spa Events NY has manicure tables set up for Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, 2010.

Owner Amber Nicole Perez opened Spa Events NY so people could be pampered on location.

SERVICES OFFERED: Haircuts, makeup, eyelash extensions, manicures,

pedicures, eyebrow shaping, chemical peels, facials, body treatments, airbrush tanning, and yoga BACKGROUND: Nail tech REASON FOR GOING MOBILE: “After nail school, I worked in high-end and fast-paced salons, but found my true passion was bringing high-quality salon and spa treatments to individuals and organizations so they can be pampered at their location,” says Perez. “With a nail salon on every corner, I wanted to do something different, so I decided to start a mobile spa company dedicated to children and moms.” Perez says after five years her business has grown to include men, women, corporate events, fundraisers, and even marketing events. “We now contract with 15 beauty professionals, and I’m always finding myself at a party,” she says. HOW IT WORKS: Her average residential party is five to 10 guests, and the average corporate event is anywhere from 10 to 50+. She requires the final head count two weeks in advance so she can schedule an adequate amount of staff. “We figure out how many staff members we will need to service our guests within the three- to four-hour timeframe of our events,” she explains. Perez is able to find great techs by networking and staying involved in the industry. Because most of the events take place on weekends, most of her independent contractors have fulltime jobs in salons. However, some work solely with Perez, which gives them time with their children and family during the week. Perez supplies not only the linens and spa robes, she also provides nearly all the service supplies in order to maintain consistency between techs. However, for specialty hair services or makeup, independent contractors bring their own products. www.nailsmag.com/fifi/23206 DECEMBER 2011

Red-dy

Festive red is a terrific holiday color for your clients’ nails. We challenged nail artists with creating monochromatic nails, using only shades of red, to inspire you. We love the depth of shades and the creative textures (rhinestones! feathers!) that give these designs a dynamic quality that rivals more typical multicolored designs.

Tara Deck, salon owner In her other life: home builder

Her Own Piece of Paradise

If she knew then what she knows now, she might not have done it. Tara Deck, owner of home-based Tara Lea Esthetics in Chetwynd, British Columbia, Canada, built her own 3,600-square-foot, five-

bedroom, ranch-style home on a beautiful five-acre lot. OK, her husband helped — a lot — and she received invaluable aid from her children, family, and friends. It took two years to build, but her dream house is now a reality. “Before we started this journey we had looked at real estate for three years and found nothing we loved in our price range,” says Deck. “So we started actively looking into building ourselves, and our friends very kindly sold us the lot. My hubby had worked in construction here and there and he is really good at this type of thing.” As for Deck, she grew up on a farm and learned as she helped her parents renovate their farmhouse. One of the main challenges she and her husband faced was time. “We both work during the week and built on weekends and in our spare time, so sometimes it didn’t go as quickly as we wanted it to,” she says. “The other big challenge was keeping the end result in focus and remembering why we were doing this when we were tired and working in the freezing cold.” Still, the experience was overwhelmingly positive. “I enjoyed watching the house plans I designed come to life and be something that you could truly touch and see,” she says. “The sense of accomplishment is still surreal. I imagine it will take time to really have it sink in that we have done it. People thought we were crazy taking on such a big project, but it worked for us and I think we are stronger as a couple and family because of it.”

I enjoyed watching the house plans I designed come to life.
