Our vision for the industry

Our vision for the packaging industry is a fully connected, digitalized, automated packaging world – contributing to sustainability worldwide.

As one of the technology leaders, we actively drive the industry transformation: from mechanical to digital, and from manufacturing machines to process solutions along the entire workflow.

The four pillars of our industry vision are the cornerstone of the industry transformation.

Connectivity

BOBST is driving connectivity: in a fully connected packaging production, all machines, tooling and systems will “talk” to each other. Stakeholders can access and share data, through a cloud-based platform.

Digitalization & automation

Through digitalization and automation, BOBST is changing the way packaging is produced. End-to-end digitalized solutions are being developed offering a seamless quality of production to converters, enabling more productivity, reducing waste and an ever-increasing quality.

Sustainability

Through its sustainability strategy under three work streams – operations, equipment, and packaging use & endof-life – BOBST is committed to make progress with relevant business indicators and build important partnerships.

Our strategic sustainability streams

BOBST operations

We create ethical, supportive, and environmentally respectful work and life conditions within the company and all along the supply chain.

BOBST equipment

We reduce the environmental and social impact of future and existing packaging machines at the customers’ site with improvements on machine performance and new services.

Packaging use & end-of-life

We contribute with solutions in the value chain that generalize sustainable packaging with minimal environmental impact and a well managed end-of-life.

Embracing global initiatives

In 2023, BOBST officially adhered to the United Nations Global Compact.

Our commitment

We received an EcoVadis score of 63. This rating, now in its third consecutive year of improvement, positions BOBST in the top 20% of companies rated for sustainability.

Committed to reducing emissions

> Discover more

At BOBST, we will reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our direct operations by 42% by 2030, compared to the 2022 base year.

We also commit to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from our procurement, machine use, and transport by 25% compared to the 2022 base year.

Anticipating risks and opportunities

In 2023, we began embedding climate-related risks and opportunities into our existing risk-management framework, based on Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

New policies could have an impact on future revenues, as well as adapting/developing new equipment and transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Physical risks show a need to further strengthen our ability to withstand extreme climate events. Opportunities can be found in new service offerings and higher demand for barrier and recyclable substrates, while we can reduce operating costs by improving energy consumption.

Reducing water consumption

At BOBST, we are committed to minimizing our water consumption and continuously improving our operational efficiency. This commitment is reflected in the general trend of reduced water consumption per employee (measured in m³) over recent years. Between 2022 and 2023, we achieved an absolute reduction of 4 259 m³ (or 4.41%) in water consumption across all areas.

* The significant decrease observed between 2021 and 2022 is partially due to a change in the scope of report including, in addition to our factories, all service entities.

Inspire, engage, connect

Our communities are part of a Group-wide program, inspiring and motivating engaged employees to grow and learn, while promoting sustainability and forging friendships across the organization.

The Experienced Community

By enabling experienced employees to share their valuable insights and knowledge, this community fosters a culture of learning and mentorship for the next generation at BOBST.

BOBST communities

The Youth Community

Young, motivated individuals are provided opportunities to connect, innovate, and shape their future through growth and collaboration within the Youth Community. They also gain exposure and learn how to become key players in the future of BOBST.

The Bees Community

This is a fantastic initiative where members actively contribute to environmental conservation by supporting bees, who are crucial pollinators in our ecosystem.

In 2023, 53% of existing suppliers were subjected to due diligence, surpassing our target of 50%.

Driving change

In 2023, BOBST launched its sustainable procurement vision. This means that sustainability compliance is now fundamental to BOBST’s supplier evaluations –alongside risk management, quality, cost, and delivery. The procurement process consists of four steps that ensure a 360-degree evaluation of our suppliers. Suppliers who fail to comply will be phased out or downgraded.

ˍCreating value

When BOBST extends the life of equipment through spare parts and repairs, we avoid the environmental impact of producing new machinery. At the same time, we reduce customer operating costs through higher efficiency.

Innovating for a sustainable future

We collaborate with partners to develop innovative sustainable solutions, such as the recycle-ready packaging oneBARRIER, sustainable banding, energy-saving automated machine setups, and material-reducing 3D-printed scorers.

We are partnering with a variety of partners, and developing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to validate the solutions we develop.

ˍPioneering packaging

Reducing packaging waste and supporting circularity within the field of packaging are essential to BOBST.

That is why, in collaboration with industry partners, we have developed our oneBARRIER family of recyclable, mono-material, high and ultra-high barrier substrates.

Since 2021, BOBST has won several international awards for our sustainable solutions, including the ERA, FISPA, IFCA, and Packaging Europe awards in 2023.

Moving forward

At BOBST, we are working toward our 2024 sustainability report, which we will make available in early 2025.

Some of the important steps we are prioritizing include:

‒ A Group-wide decarbonization project, supporting our goal to reduce emissions by 42%.

‒ A double materiality assessment, enabling the Group to adopt the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Report Directive) in 2025.

‒ Full implementation of recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

‒ In 2023, BOBST developed several innovations focused on automation and sustainability, which were showcased at drupa 2024. These initiatives aim to improve efficiency and reduce waste in packaging production.

‒ Roll-out of three communities worldwide: Experienced, Youth, and Bees.

‒ Our first United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) report, expected in July 2024.

‒ 60% of our suppliers will undergo due diligence as part of our sustainable procurement vision.
