“We are seeing a trend in the industry,” says gym owner Julie Willmott, who packed up her Rising Stars Gymnastics troupe a few blocks away on East Rogers Circle, enhanced the name and moved to the 6500 West Rogers Circle location a few months ago. “The new wave of the future is offering family choices.” Willmott, who was a competitive gymnast, has been a coach for nearly 20 years and a gym owner for more than half that time. She’s known industry wide for focusing on character building, self-esteem, and mental and physical strength. Willmott, who has three competitive gymnast daughters, wanted an allaround- gym for many years, and once a large enough facility came about, seized it. The new facility houses Rising
Stars Gymnastics, Villari’s Martial Arts, Star Power Cheer, Dance Starz Dance Academy, Mini Stars Gym & Learn Preschool, Premier Gymnastics-Rhythmic Gymnastics, and Optimum Personal Training. It also features a daily indoor “playground” for tots, seasonal camps, birthday parties and Parents Night Out on Saturdays. Sierra, for example, says she may take advantage of having a dance program in the building. At 14, she is a Level 8 gymnast and feels taking dance will help with many of her gymnastic events. Sierra and many of her teammates placed within the Top 10 at Nationals held in Orlando this summer. She’s been part of the gym family for five years. It was ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) that brought her there. “My pediatrician recommended it and said it would be the best way to get my energy out,” says Sierra, who is enrolled in Honors classes at Boynton Beach Community High School. “It helps me focus. It’s really fun.” Sierra got a taste of martial arts and rhythmic gymnastics while working as a counselor in the gym’s summer camp. For her mom, Donna Sierra, an accountant, it’s been gratifying to see her daughter focus and set her own goals. Sierra says the sports being offered at the gym can help children with time management skills as it has her daughter. Her youngest daughter, Alexandra, 7, earned a yellow belt in karate during summer camp there. “I think the self-esteem these sports promote is probably the most important,” says Sierra, noting the similarity in motivating children most of the disciplines offered at the gym promote. That’s why Mark Pearson brought his Shao Lin Kempo karate there. The owner of Villari’s Martial Arts is an eighth-degree Black Belt and has been an instructor for 30 years. “For years we have been trying to combine martial arts with gymnastics and dance and other athletics to offer a place that would satisfy many different interests,” he says. He’s already seeing kids come over from gymnastics and with siblings interested in karate. He

teaches children and adults. Willmott and Pearson both have a special interest in children with exceptionalities, both noting how the sports offered in the gym pay particular attention to focus and control. Willmott is looking into getting certified for Special Needs. Closer on the horizon, however, is the gym’s VPK certification. There’s already the aforementioned preschool program, but getting certified VPK will let the four and five year olds develop better coordination and focus while learning. “This has been a dream of mine for years. I’m so happy that we are now able to serve the whole family, as we continue to grow as a major fitness facility.” Back in the gym, coach Amy Ducy smiles with pride as she watches Dianna do giants- a series of rotational full-stretched swings on the high bar. Ducy, who also is the Department Director of TOPS (Talented Opportunity Program), has been coaching for nearly a decade. The larger gym gives the gymnast in TOPS more room –even a place to run stairs. The national program, which works on strength and flexibility, is a new program to the gym and offered to competitive gymnasts. Dianna is one of them. “Go, go, Dianna!” she shouts as the teen swings fully stretched from her encouragement. It’s obvious the TOPS training helped Dianna. As for the multi-sport gym: “Just look around,” she says. “There is something here for everyone.” August 23, through August 29, 2013

Fire Kills Man and His Cat By Stephanie Neeley DELRAY BEACH - Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that killed an 86-year-old man and his cat early Monday morning in a Delray Beach house fire. Firefighters found the man’s body in the master bedroom after the fire was extinguished around 1:30 a.m., said Cpt. Kevin Saxton, Delray Beach Fire-Rescue public information officer. Investigators have withheld the name of the man until they can notify his next of kin. The dead cat was also found inside the residence, Saxton said.
Firefighters responded to a call to the house on Riviera Drive in Rainberry Estates shortly before 12:45 a.m. after a smoke detector triggered a call to authorities, Saxton said. Crews found an extensive blaze with flames burning through the home's roof, officials said. Firefighters couldn’t enter the home until the fire was brought under control about 1:30 a.m., Saxton said. The victim was the only one in the structure at the time of the fire, said Saxton. The roof of the home was partially collapsed, making the house unlivable.

Little kid, big car That combination can lead to serious accidents if children and motorists aren’t careful. And as students head back to school - some walking or riding their bicycles – I join our local law enforcement officials in urging drivers to watch the road even more carefully. Starting a new school year can be an overwhelming experience for a child, especially in a brand new school with new class mates and teachers to cope with. If starting middle school, many children will also have to make a longer journey that they are less familiar with and may walk or cycle on busier roads or use buses on their own for the first time. Young people tend to think that road accidents will never happen to them, so road safety often seems a low priority compared with the other pressures of starting a new school year. Parents, please talk to your children about the safest route to school and warn them of any potential hazards. Please ensure they can be seen, give them brightly colored, fluorescent or reflective clothing to wear, and if riding a bike, have a helmet on. If you need a helmet, let me know. Take a moment to explain other road safety issues such as how to behave on a bus, where to cross the road and to always wear seatbelts in cars. Let me offer these advices to you: Motorists: hang up that darn cell phone. Distracted drivers can impair the critical skills essential for safe driving. Be aware that there will be an increase in children in the area of all our schools when the new school term begins. These children may be unfamiliar with their route so please take extra precaution. In fact, slow down and obey all traffic laws. Be on the lookout for children at and near bus stops, and always stop for a school bus that is picking up or dropping off children. As a reminder, motorists must stop in both directions for school buses while they are picking up or dropping off children. Traffic must also stop in both directions on a four-lane undivided highway when the buses display red

flashing lights. Drivers on a divided four-lane highway travelling the same direction as the bus must stop and wait until the flashers are off before continuing. Passing a stopped school bus is considered reckless driving. Children: watch the road. Don’t dart out into traffic from between parked cars or walk behind buses, because drivers may not see you, even if you are wearing a Hannah Montana backpack that’s bigger than both your parents combined. You should never cross a street unless you’re at an intersection. If you’re walking to and from school, you should rely on crossing guards for help crossing the street safely. If there is no crossing guard, use the walk-light button and wait to cross the street at marked crosswalks.

Crossing guards: That Glo guard’s vest is a very pretty vest, but it is not bulletproof. Even with the vest on and a stop sign held high, they will often seem invisible to motorists. I have written stories of school crossing guards being run over by errant drivers. Never argue with a child. Most children are well-behaved, but we all have a few bad apples. By the time a child gets home and tells his or her parents what the mean crossing guard said, Mom and Dad go to the police, and you have a whole mess that nobody needs. Be fair, friendly but not familiar, with children. No hugging, especially in the age of cell phones. I recalled the case at one of our elementary school where a motorist saw a guard hugging a child and got on the cell phone to police to report witnessing inappropriate behavior. It turned out the guard was the child’s grandmother, but police still had to investigate. Our children are our future and we need to do everything to make sure they are safe as they strive for the education they need to prosper in life. We want everyone to arrive and leave school safely. Please drive carefully. Until next week…. www.bocaratontribune.com

THOUGHTS FROM THE PUBLISHER By Douglas Heizer
A Prayer For Leaders By: John O’Donohue May you have the grace and wisdom To act kindly, learning To distinguish between what is Personal and what is not. May you be hospitable to criticism. May you never put yourself at the center of things. May you act not from arrogance but out of service. May you work on yourself Building up and refining the ways of your mind.
May you learn to cultivate the art of presence In order to engage with those who meet you. When someone fails or disappoints you May the graciousness with which you engage Be their stairway to renewal and refinement. May you treasure the gifts of the mind Through reading and creative thinking So that you continue to be a servant of the frontier Where the new will draw its
enrichment from the old, And you never become functionary.
a
May you know the wisdom of deep listening, The healing of wholesome words, The encouragement of the appreciative gaze, The decorum of held dignity, The springtime of the bleak question. May you have a mind that loves frontiers So that you can evoke the bright fields That lie beyond the view of the regular eye.
May you have good friends To mirror your blind spots. May leadership be for you A true adventure of growth. The Bible, in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, instructs, “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” This poem could be a good guide for following that directive.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Learn To Be Flexible! It’s sad, but true, that some people prefer to go without some service they need, or some item they lack, simply because they are slaves to a time frame, or to the only way they are capable of doing anything. If something can’t be done at their exact appointed time, they choose not to have it! Unless what they want cannot be delivered or accomplished at the time they designate, they give the entire experience up! Instead of adjusting their own schedule to those of service providers, they obstinately forfeit what
they could still have, even if at a different moment of any day! Yet, if something is truly important, one should be flexible enough to get it when it coincides with the provider’s schedule. Rigidity can be deadly, and seldom makes a significant difference in any endeavor, except in cases of health and safety. Learn to compromise, and to recognize the difference between an indefensible rigidity and the flexibility which is legitimate, spontaneous, and will still accomplish the same task or
function without unnecessary distress to you and others around you! Living on earth should be sufficient to establish the fact that nothing is, nor shall ever be, perfect among humans. Although we should strive for the best, be punctual in all our activities, plan ahead for every event, times will come when compromises have to be made, in spite of whatever disappointment a chance may cause. When things don’t go your way, it’s better to suspend judgment of others until you can fully determine the causes
for what has disappointed or enraged you. Remember always that in your own experience, there are unexpected mishaps which completely change the nature of what is being done, or planned! Learn to stretch your mind, and also extend your target date for any realization, beyond the time you had planned for and projected to see a given experience finalized. Flexibility retains your joy, while rigidity can rob you of that and many other positive factors which animate your efforts and bring them to completion!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Police say Man Arrested After Striking son With Vase
By Jason Schwartz Police arrested and charged a Boca Raton man who they said struck his 16-year-old son with a glass vase during an argument. Jeffrey Jay Gerstel, 45, was charged Friday night with one count of aggravated child abuse — cruelty
to a child — and aggravated battery. He was released from the Palm Beach County Jail the following day on $10,000 bond. According to the police report, Gerstel and the boy argued about 10:30 a.m. Friday at a home on Northwest 42nd Way. Witnesses told police Gerstel and the boy were pushing each other when Gerstel grabbed a large glass vase and struck the child in the head. The boy had a scrape and blood on the back of his head, but the injury did not require either stitches or hospital treatment, according to the report. Gerstel declined to give his account of what happened. He however told police the boy punched him on the left side of his face. One person told police Gerstel was the primary aggressor and was responsible for starting the fight.
Bicyclist killed in crash Boca Raton, FL – On Saturday, August 24 at 2:25 a.m., officers with the Boca Raton Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to a fatal crash, which occurred in the 6700 block of North Federal Highway. The investigation revealed that a 2007 Honda was traveling southbound on North Federal
Highway when it collided with a bicyclist riding southbound in the bike lane. The bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene. If anyone has information regarding this crash, they are asked to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator Fred Laurie at (561) 620-6181.
New version of old scam surfaces Boca Raton, FL – Over the past week Boca Raton Police officers have documented reports of a similar scam where the potential victims received a phone call from a male with a Spanish accent, who told them that a family member was involved in a traffic crash and was being held for ransom by the caller. The victim was instructed to go to a Publix and wire a $1,200 ransom payment through Western Union and the loved one would then be released. In both cases, the family member was never in any danger and no ransom was sent.
If you receive a phone call like this, it is most likely a scam. If at all possible, have someone else call your family member and notify police while you are on the phone with the caller. When speaking with the caller, never add any information about yourself or the family member. Be aware that criminals are always looking for new ways to take your money, property or identity. Never send money through Western Union to anyone you do not know. Kidnappers don’t use Western Union. Be alert, vigilant and report all suspicious activity.
Two busted for using fake credit card at Apple Store Boca Raton, FL – On Friday, August 9, at 5:05 p.m., Boca Raton Police responded to a fraudulent credit card transaction at the Apple Store, 6000 West Glades Road. Officers met with an Apple Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) who told them that he was alerted to a suspicious transaction when a male, later identified as Anthony Baker, tried to purchase four 5s iPhones and two 128GB iPads, but the credit card was declined. Baker also presented a fraudulent Pennsylvania driver’s license. As the LPO watched the transaction, he noticed another male, later identified as Cordarell Senatus, continuously looking around the store and standing near Baker. When the credit card was declined, Baker asked the sales clerk where the nearest Wells Fargo Bank was so he could get cash. Baker left the items on the counter as he and Senatus left the store, with the LPO following. Officers approached Baker and Senatus a short distance from the Apple Store. Senatus told officers Baker and he drove a rented Dodge to the mall and allowed officers to search it. Inside the vehicle,
they found an American Express activation form addressed to a female named Susana. Baker told officers when he checked the mail at his brother’s house on Wednesday he found a letter from Wells Fargo Bank addressed to Pedro Ramos which contained a Visa card. Not knowing anyone named Pedro Ramos, he decided to keep the Visa card and make a driver’s license using the same name. On Friday afternoon, he saw Senatus at a friend’s house and asked him to drive him to Boca Raton. Senatus told officers he agreed to drive Baker to Boca Raton in exchange for gas money. Senatus denied knowing what Baker was doing and any knowledge of the American Express document found in the car. Officers charged Baker and Senatus with organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and credit card forgery. Baker was also charged with possession of a counterfeit driver’s license; Senatus was also charged with principle in the first degree since he drove Baker to the mall to commit the crimes.
Teenager arrested for the third time this month Boca Raton, FL – On Thursday, July 25, Boca Raton Police officers responded to a burglary of an automobile at 3939 NE 5th Avenue. The crime was called in by a witness. The witness told police he was taking out the trash when he noticed that the interior light of his neighbor’s blue Dodge van was illuminated. As he looked closer, the witness saw a male walk away from the van, light a cigarette and walk between several cars. As the witness continued to watch, he observed the suspect open the driver’s door and go inside the Dodge. The witness called 911 and watched as the suspect got out of the van and entered a white Jeep. The suspect got out of the Jeep as

police arrived on scene. Officers approached the suspect, identified as Logan Yannie. The witness identified Yannie as the male he saw in the cars. Officers located the owners of the two vehicles and determined that coins were taken. Yannie, who was holding a Styrofoam containing coins, told officers he was cutting through the parking lot on his way home. Yannie denied going inside any cars, but couldn’t explain why he was carrying so many coins. Officers also found three pairs of headphones and an 80 GB iPod in his possession. Officers arrested Yannie and charged him with two counts of burglary to a conveyance.

Miami City Ballet Announces its 2013/14 Season
Miami City Ballet, hailed by The New York Times as “one of America’s most beloved dance companies” proudly announces its 2013-2014 season, featuring four Company premieres by four of the world’s greatest ballet and contemporary dance choreographers. This exciting season of dance marks the debut season of Miami City Ballet’s new Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez. “I am thrilled to be back in the community where I grew up and can’t wait to share with South Florida, the nation and the worldwide stage, a Miami City Ballet that celebrates our culture and its connection to the people of this special city and neighbors,” said Lopez. “I am hoping that you will be with us to witness once again live music, the athleticism and grace of our dancers and the stories of this exhilarating news season Boca Life & Arts
Program I: First Ve n t u r e s, o p e n s F r i d a y, October 18, 2013 at the Adrienne A r s h t C e n t e r for the Performing Arts in Miami and continues at the Broward C e n t e r for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale and the K r a v i s C e n t e r for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. It features the Company premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s breakthrough contemporary work, Polyphonia. The work, which features geometric-patterned movements and punctuated rhythms, was deemed by The New York Times as “the point at which Mr. Wheeldon moved from being a promising choreographer to a celebrated one.” The program also features two ballets by George Balanchine: Serenade, the first masterpiece Balanchine created in America and Ballo della Regina, hailed by The New York Times as a “bounding test of technique and endurance.” Program II: See the Music, which opens January 10, 2014 in Miami before continuing in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, features the Company premiere of the lyrical and soulful Jardí Tancat, Miami City Ballet’s first work by Spanish
contemporary dance choreographer Nacho Duato. Based on Catalan folk songs, the work is the story of strongspirited people who pray to God for rain that never comes. Also featured is Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco, a signature work set to Bach’s Double Violin Concerto in D Minor. And back by popular demand, we feature the dramatic and fast-paced Symphonic Dances, a ballet created for Miami City Ballet by choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, who The New Yorker proclaimed as “the man who is remaking ballet.” The music Ratmansky chose to work with is Sergei Rachmaninoff ’s final important work, his large-scale Symphonic Dances of 1941 – a work whose turbulent energy and deep emotion perfectly complement the dance qualities for which the company is famous. Program III: Triple Threat -features the company premiere of two works: Jerome Robbins’s West Side Story Suite, the song and dance distillation of the world-famous Broadway classic (which debuts the vocal talents of Miami City Ballet’s dancers) and George Balanchine’s boldly modern Episodes, a dynamic work that is rarely ever performed. Another Balanchine work, the thrilling Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, completes the program. Set to the “lost music” from Swan Lake, Act III, features eight and a half minutes of Balanchine’s signature traits: his surprises, his complexities, his challenging quirks and combinations. Opening night is on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2014 in Miami and continues in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Program IV: Don Quixote, is the joyous and entertaining full-length ballet that brings the audience into a Spain of so long ago where love and adventure were the rule of the day. It features macho bullfighters and sensual gypsies all performing to the world-famous Minkus score. Choreography is by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky. The Opus One Orchestra, under the direction of Principal Conductor Gary Sheldon, returns once again, thanks to a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knight Arts Challenge. “From Nacho Duato to George Balanchine, Lourdes’s debut season offers a mix of contemporary and classic works that reflect the spirit of Miami and the pulse of the dance world,” said Miami City Ballet’s Executive Director Dan Hagerty. “It’s an exciting season that offers so much to devoted ballet lovers and to new audiences alike.” George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ and Program I: See the Music will also be presented at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts in Naples, Florida. Palm Beach Pops Founder Bob Lappin Dies
By Skip Sheffield Palm Beach Pops founder, conductor piano soloist and benefactor Bob Lappin died Aug. 19 in Boston. He was 78. I met Mr. Lappin (“Call me Bob,” he would insist) before he founded Palm Beach Pops in 1991. He invited me to his lakefront mansion in Palm Beach. We hit it off immediately. Not only did he love “The Great American Songbook,” he started out as a professional touring musician with a promising future, which he put on hold to pursue a very successful and lucrative business career with Pepsi-Cola and broadcasting (he owned three radio stations) in New England. He sold his business in 1984 and moved to Florida, but not to retire. Sure Bob Lappin was a showman and he enjoyed the attention and applause. That’s what show business is about. Even if it’s the highestbrow classical music, it’s still show business. More importantly, Mr. Lappin put his money where his mouth is, as we musicians like to say. Mr. Lappin hired the best musicians and paid big bucks for stars like Met Torme, Lena Horne, Steve Allen, Judy Collins
and many more. When the Boca Raton Symphonic Pops went out of business in 2001, Mr. Lappin made sure its 3,000 subscribers were not left in the lurch. He honored Pop Pops tickets at Palm Beach Pops concerts. Even more important to Mr. Lappin was the Palm Beach Pops Music and Education Programs, which to date have benefited more than 90,000 low-income school children. As for the Palm Beach Pops’ 20132014 Boca Raton series at FAU, the orchestra’s board will be meeting to determine the fate of that series and the one at Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. Also to be determined will be a memorial tribute to Bob Lappin. In the meantime, donations in his name may be made to American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation and/or the Palm Beach Pops Music and Education Programs. The telephone number for Palm Beach Pops is 561-832-7677 and the web site is www.palmbeachpops.org. “Spectacular Now” No Ordinary Teen Flick Tired
of
mindless,
shallow,
puerile teenage high school movies? “The Spectacular Now” provides a thought-provoking alternative message about responsibility and the consequences of irresponsibility while still being funny. Directed by James Ponsoldt, “The Spectacular Now” is based on the novel by Tim Tharp, with screenplay by Scott Neustadter. The two main characters are played by two relatively unknown actors who look more like real kids than movie stars. Miles Teller is the lead character, Sutter Keely, a likeable high school senior and directionless slacker who is becoming increasingly fond of nipping from the flask he always carries with him. We meet Sutter in mid-dumping by his pretty girlfriend Cassidy (Brie Larson). Sutter tries not to let it get him down, so he starts hitting on other girls at a party. The next thing he knows he is shaken awake by Aimee Finecky (Shailene Woodley), a mousy smart-girl classmate, who has found him passed out on her front lawn. “Where is my car?” asks the dazed Sutter, who asks Aimee to help him find it. Both Sutter and Aimee have issues
with parents. Neither has a father figure and both feel oppressed by their mother. The two each help the other. Sutter encourages Aimee to be more confident and independent. He also introduces her to booze. Aimee tutors Sutter in math and encourages him to be more serious about school and a goal in life. Romance blossoms, but there is a 500-pound gorilla obstacle that prevents the couple from realizing either one’s short-term dreams. Directed James Ponsoldt had an earlier film with a heavier and more obvious message called “Smashed.” Screenwriter Neustadter explored the fleeting vagaries of young romance in “500 Days of Summer.” The two elements are combined beautifully thanks to the wonderfully natural performances of Miles Teller, an actor who is scarred figuratively and literally, and Shailene Woodley in her first grown-up role since she played George Clooney’s daughter in “The Descendants.” “The Spectacular Now” is no ordinary teen flick. That’s why young people should see it. Three and a half stars

Euro Fusion Offers Tasty Eclectic/Exotic Foods Located at Wharfside, 6899 SW 18th Street in Boca Raton (561395-6109) this creative restaurant presents breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 8AM to 10PM, Friday 8AM to 3:30PM, Saturday 8PM to 2AM-being ORB certified. There is a beautiful water view to enjoy. Lorraine, Bob, Roz and this reviewer sampled an exotic sushi menu and a standard dinner menu. There are 11 sushi appetizers listed – we had Euro Sashimi- fresh cut tuna, salmon and white fish, a cool Ceviche of white fish, faux crab, red onion, cilantro, cherry tomato, scallops served in a kimchee/lime vinaigrette- delicious! Their sushi spring roll was crisp but was rather bland. Under the heading of Salads, we tried Seaweed salad with granny smith apple and carrots with a smooth garlic/chili vinaigrette, followed by Kani salad with its faux crab, masago, cucumber and avocado served with sweet rice vinegar…nothing special. There was a veggie wrap – assorted vegetables wrapped in cucumber that was a nice treat. Of the 36 Classic and Signature rolls, we sampled tasty California, Alaskan, Cucumber rolls –all ample servings of crisp rolls…with dips of low sodium soy sauce, mildly spicy mayonnaise and eel sauce. Sushi sashimi combinations can be had in three versions – totaling 20, 28 or 36 pieces in a beautiful display…as are all dishes served. Turning to the main standard dinner menu, we noted 9 appetizers including a great eggplant stack of layered crispy eggplant laden with mozzarella and ricotta cheese topped with a grilled portabella and tangy marinara sauce. This
Boca Life & Arts
was followed by the Mediterranean platter of hummus, babganoush, eggplant and Moroccan tomato sauce, served with warm pita bread. A beautiful presentation of delicious choices! There are daily soup choices – we had today’s special split peagrainy texture and fine taste! Unfortunately, the standard French onion soup was very thin of taste and texture-it needs rethinking. 7 salads are listed – we tried the Caesar-found it to be bland and not to our liking…try another! Of the 6 pastas presented, we had a not-tospicy Pad Thai that was quite tasty. The Fettuccine Alfredo tossed in a creamy parmesan-garlic sauce was flavorless as the sauce was weak and quite thin. 7 fish offerings are quite varied –we’ll try another day! We did not sample any of the Italian dishes…the 8 Pizzas, 3 Calzones, 3 Strombolis as we wanted to test some of the 9 desserts listed. The dessert list was creative and varied but, limited this evening to only tasting their tiramisu which was lovely – lady fingers dipped in coffee layered with flavored whipped cream and cocoa. Then decaf and regular cappuccinos were served. Our waiter, Mark, mentioned that the regular standard menu is in force for luncheon –though not their fish offerings but with added sandwiches (13 in number) plus 5 Mediterranean specialties –all at reduced pricing. Seating 100 inside and 50 on their waterfront patio, there is a full bar and wine selection as well as a creative kids menu. We enjoyed our testing…and we suggest that you…Go and enjoy!

Facing and Overcoming Failure No one’s life is an unbroken chain of victories. We all experience setbacks, defeat, losses and failures. Even great hitters in baseball hit safely 30 percent of the time. We all make mistakes. Since failure is common to all of us, one of the most important lifeskills you can learn is how to respond to it. Successful people know how to turn every failure into a learning experience – a stepping-stone to success. Although reasons for failure are numerous, there are five common causes: 1. WHEN WE DON’T PLAN AHEAD: As an old saying goes, “if you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.” Proverbs 27:12 says, “A sensible man watches for problems ahead and prepares to meet them.” According to the Bible, Noah had to start building the ark long before it started raining. 2. WHEN WE THINK WE HAVE “ARRIVED”: Remember the lesson of the whale: Just when you get to the top and start to blow, that’s when you get harpooned! Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride leads to destruction and arrogance to downfall.” 3. WHEN WE ARE AFRAID TO TAKE NECESSARY RISKS: The fear of failure can cause failure. We worry about what others will think of
us if we fail, so we do not even try. Former star professional athlete Fran Tarkenton says, “Fear sets you up to be a loser.” We fail when we refuse to take advantage of golden opportunities. “The fear of man is a dangerous trap” (Proverbs 29:25). 4. WHEN WE GIVE UP TOO SOON: Many times success is just around the corner. Remember that an athletic contest is often won in the final seconds. If at first you do not succeed, you are normal. Keep on going. The value of a postage stamp is found in its ability to stick to one thing until it gets to its intended destination. “A lazy fellow has trouble all through life” (Proverbs 15:19). 5. WHEN WE IGNORE GOD’S ADVICE: The Bible is the manual for life from our Owner and Creator. It is filled with practical instructions and guidelines for work, home, finances, relationships and health. When we fail to follow these, we’re asking for trouble. “There is a way that SEEMS right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12). Here is an important truth about failure that is worth remembering: ailure is never final unless you let it be final. You are never a failure until you give up.

Common Core Educational Program The truth hurts. Children in many of the world’s countries are better educated than those in many, if not all, states in the United States. Our systems lack in some of the most important educational disciplines such as mathematics and science. As usual the most heinous enemy to the better education of our children is demagoguery. Politicians on the left and the right, attempt to control a rational approach to erect a universal, nationwide method of educating our young entitled “Common Core” under the false flag of “state’s rights.” The proponents of the “Common Core” educational program propose and support a universal system of education on a national platform. The platform strives for equaling and exceeding the world’s top educational standards in every state of our union. President Barak Obama supports Common Core as the path to universally improve the country’s education system to become competitive in the world, thereby giving our emerging generation an opportunity to compete on the world’s stage. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush once again defended the Core education Common standards in front the American Legislative Exchange Council’s highly-protested annual recent meeting in Chicago. “There are critics of Common Core Standards from both ends of the ideological spectrum. I know there are some in this room,” Bush said, according to prepared remarks provided to The Huffington Post.
“I respect those who don’t share my views. What I can’t accept are the dumbed-down standards and expectations that exist in almost all of our schools today,” Bush continued, echoing language often used by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Both the political far left and the right appear to oppose this saving grace as they vie for control of your children’s education for their own political gain. The Glenn Becks of this world would have us to continue supporting religious supported bible stories as part of our educational process. They claim that State’s Rights should defeat the President’s efforts. Others on the left seem to fear that their supporters and their children cannot face the challenge of higher standards and the modern educational process emerging throughout the world leaving their constituents further behind. Perhaps the left also fears that Common Core Education will mandate the weeding out of ineffective teachers, emasculating the power of their unions, staunch supporters of the left. Clearly neither Obama nor Jeb Bush wants to thrown any child under the bus of a failed educational system. Both have searched for a better plan, and both have found a single, logical, and hopeful educational system which will benefit our children and grandchildren. For once the politically selfish should shut their mouths and jump on board for the betterment of the majority in the middle.

Digital Risk to lay off 100 Workers Office Depot-OfficeMax CEO Hunt at Month end Narrows to 5 By Jason Schwartz
Pink slips will be issued to 112 employees at the Boca Raton offices of Digital Risk, the nation’s largest provider of mortgage risk, compliance, and transaction management solutions, later this month, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned. Fifty-six of those employees are fulltime and the rest are either part-time or have not been with the company for six months. The layoff is "market-driven" said Digital Risk spokeswoman Brandie Young. "One of the clients pulled their business indoors," she said, following the recent rise in interest rates that reduced new consumer loans. The Maitland-based company, which now has 135 employees in Boca Raton, added the most jobs in the state in 2012. The workers who are being let go have been told - a number of processors, analysts and underwriters - and their last day is Aug. 30. All layoffs at the 5201 Congress Ave., Suite 250, facility will be permanent. No bumping or seniority rights exist, and no employees are represented by a union, according to a notice. In June, Gov. Rick Scott celebrated Digital Risk's job creation and highlighted the Florida
Families First Budget, which doubles the annual funding available for the nationally recognized Quick Response Training program to $12 million. Funding for the Quick Response Training program helped Digital Risk hire and train nearly 700 employees at its locations throughout Florida last year, said Peter Kassabov, CEO of Digital Risk. “We are committed to building careers, not just jobs, which is why we invest more than $10,000 in training for each employee we hire, including the recent college graduates who are accepted into our FASTLANE accelerated training program,” Kassabov said. “Given the investment, the partial reimbursement offered through Quick Response Training is extremely valuable to us as an employer.” Digital Risk expanded its Florida presence in 2009, adding more staff to its headquarters operations. Since then, the company also set up operations in Jacksonville. In total, Digital Risk has created more than 1,300 new jobs in Florida since 2009, according to the company’s website. The projected growth that prompted Digital Risk’s continued expansion was driven by the mortgage market’s focus on making loans safe for borrowers, banks and taxpayers.

BOCA RATON - Boca Ratonbased Office Depot Inc. and peer OfficeMax Inc. said that the field of candidates for a chief executive officer to lead the combined officesupply companies has been narrowed to five and they plan to pick one by September. However, the companies warned that a proxy campaign being led by dissident Starboard Value LP, which owns about 14.6 percent in Office Depot's stock, could prove counterproductive to the CEO selection process. Office Depot board member Nigel Travis said in a statement that “it is critical” for the CEO selection committee to “maintain its momentum.” “We are very concerned that the disruptive proxy campaign currently being led by Starboard to replace four Office Depot board members, including two that currently sit on the CEO Selection Committee, if successful, will prove counterproductive to the CEO selection process,” said Travis, who is also Chairman and CEO of Dunkin’ Brands . Starboard is seeking four seats on Office Depot’s board ahead of the merger, urging the retailer to first improve is standalone performance. Proxy advisers ISS and Glass Lewis each backed three of Starboard’s

four board nominees. Both companies hired executive search firm Korn/Ferry International in June to assist the CEO search committee, made up of an equal number of members from Office Depot and OfficeMax's boards. Korn/Ferry and the search committee, co-chaired by OfficeMax director Jim Marino and Travis, reviewed and vetted the pool of more than 100 candidates. The top eight were interviewed from which the "five exceptional candidates", whose names were not disclosed, were selected. Office Depot and Naperville, Ill.-based OfficeMax, the secondand third-largest U.S. office-supply chains, agreed to combine in a $1.17 billion deal after losing sales to larger rival Staples Inc. and online competitors. The retailers said at the time that they would create a board with equal representation from each company while searching for a new CEO. The companies, in February, said Neil Austrian, Office Depot’s 73-year-old chairman and CEO, and Ravi Saligram, OfficeMax’s 57-yearold president and CEO, both would be considered as candidates. Austrian however has said he will retire if another candidate is found. The merger, which the companies hope to close by year-end, is under review by the Federal Trade Commission.

Holder’s Comment hits Shares of Boca’s GEO Group By Kevin Gale Shares of detention center operator GEO Group are down $2.65, excluding the affects of a dividend payout, since the U.S. Attorney General made remarks that fewer non-violent drug offenders should be sent to prison. Boca Raton-based GEO is one of the nation’s largest operators of prisons and other detention centers. Shares closed at $35.66 on Aug. 9 and were trading at $32.51 at 10:10 a.m. on Monday. The stock went ex-dividend on a 50 cent quarterly payment on Aug. 15, so that added to the overall $3.15 drop, or 8.8 percent drop. There’s some skepticism that Holder’s comments will turn into reality, which would mean GEO shares may have been oversold. A Forbes contributor points out that prisons are big business, often in rural areas where they are a major provider of jobs. He also mentioned that GEO reported strong quarterly earnings. An article in the Miami Herald on Monday said leniency for drug sentences is a hard sell in Florida.
A bipartisan legislative coalition is supporting ending minimum mandatory sentences for certain drug crimes, the Herald notes. Convictions have boomed amid abuse of prescription drugs. However, prosecutors, the Florida Sheriff ’s Association, prison officials and lobbyists oppose loosening the standards, the newspaper notes. Gov. Rick Scott and the Senate have both opposed loosening measures. On Aug. 16, the Street.com said GEO was one of three buy-rated dividend stocks. One reason is that GEO Group has a 5.8 percent dividend yield. As of Aug. 15, GEO shares were up 43.5 percent over the past year and earnings were up 41.17 percent, surpassing the S&P 500. GEO Group has had some controversy in its backyard. The company struck a naming rights deal for the Florida Atlantic University football stadium, which caused protests on campus. The deal was subsequently rescinded and university President Mary Jane Saunders stepped down in the wake of the naming rights deal and other controversies.

Lynn Men’s Soccer Picked Second in SSC Preseason Poll By Chad Beattie Winter Park, Fla. – Lynn University’s top-ranked men’s soccer team was edged out by Rollins by one point to sit atop the Sunshine State Conference men’s soccer preseason poll, it was announced Wednesday. The Fighting Knights and Tars each collected four first-place votes but Rollins earned 60 points overall to Lynn’s 59 in a vote conducted among the conference head men’s soccer coaches. Rollins, ranked No. 9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll, claimed the 2012 SSC Tournament championship while LU took the regular season title. Lynn returns 10 letter winners, including All-Americans Jason Sangha and Jack Winter along
with NCAA Division II National Championship Most Outstanding Offensive Player Anthony Desperito. But the Blue & White graduated 13 seniors, eight of which were starters. Tampa rounded out the topthree in the league preseason poll as the Spartans earned 52 points with one first-place vote. Florida Tech (37), Saint Leo (33) and Eckerd (32) were closely contested in fourth, fifth and sixth while Barry, Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern completed the lower third. The Blue & White begin their title defense Friday, September 6, in Cleveland, Tenn., when they battle Shorter University. Fans can catch the action live through live audio and stats at LynnFightingKnights. com.
57 Lynn Student-Athletes Recognized by the Division 2 ADA By Olivia Coiro CLEVELAND- The Division 2 Athletics Directors Association announced the 2012-13 recipients of the D2ADA Achievement Awards with 57 Lynn University student-athletes making the list. A record number of institutions (171) across the NCAA Division II level were represented on this list of 6,881 student-athletes. “Lynn University has a longstanding tradition of studentathletes who excel both athletically and academically,” said Lynn University director of athletics Dr. Kristen Migliano. “The 2013 Academic Achievement Award bestowed on 57 of Lynn’s athletes from the D2ADA is a wonderful opportunity to recognize excellence that epitomizes the NCAA Division II philosophy of balancing athletics and academics. Lynn University is proud to have so many studentathletes be recognized for their scholarly commitment.” Of LU’s 13 varsity programs from the 2012-13 academic year, 12 had at least one student-athlete received the Academic Achievement Award while the NCAA Division II National Champions men’s soccer team topped Lynn’s teams having a total of 13 athletes acknowledged.
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference led the nation with 759 recipients for this past academic year. Lynn University represented one of the nine Sunshine State Conference schools, while Florida Southern led the SSC in studentathletes awarded. In order to be selected for the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, attended a minimum of two years of college level work and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during this past academic year. “The D2ADA would like to thank and congratulate the institutions that took part in honoring the record-number of 6,854 student-athletes with 2012-13 Academic Achievement Awards,” said D2ADA President Anita Barker, director of athletics at Chico State University. “We continuously strive to recognize and honor deserving Division 2 student-athletes. This award gives us the platform to showcase these individuals and their efforts in the classroom, as well as on the playing field.”
Lynn Women’s Basketball Announces Final Two Additions for 2013-14
By Dani Rivera BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University’s women’s basketball head coach Niki Washington announced the addition of two junior college players, Isidora Madzaveric and Sharneka McCatty on Monday afternoon. The duo join Fredinna Guillaume to round out the 2013-14 recruiting class. “This is group we are extremely excited about,” said Washington. “I think collectively they will help us maintain our position as a top contender in the region and help us advance in postseason play.” Madzaveric is a 6-foot-3 transfer from Northern Oklahoma College who was also a member of the Serbian U16 National Team. The Novi Sad, Serbia, native started 28 games at Northern Oklahoma averaging 8.3 points per game and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 30 percent from three-point range.
She spent her freshman season at New Mexico Junior College where she helped lead the Thunderbirds to a 28-5 record, a Western Junior College Athletic Conference title and a NJCAA National Tournament appearance. McCatty is a 6-foot forward from Palm Beach State College. While at PBSC, she garnered Second Team All-Southern Conference accolades and was instrumental in leading her team to a pair of FCSAA Region 8 State Tournament appearances and a Southern Conference Championship title. She averaged 8.8 points per game and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the field. The Fighting Knights return eight letterwinners after finishing 18-10 last season and winning the first Sunshine State Conference regular season title in program history.
FC Dallas Loans Shine as Strikers Defeat Spring Champions 1-0 The Fort Lauderdale Strikers had a big night from their two FC Dallas loans Bradlee Baladez and Richard Sanchez, as they win their second match on the road, beating the Atlanta Silverbacks 1-0 in Atlanta. After no real threats from either team for the first 34 minutes, the Strikers found the back of the net when a cross from Honduran Defender Iván Guerrero was headed into the net by Bradlee Baladez for his first goal. “We scored with the first big chance we had,” said Strikers head coach Günter Kronsteiner. “I think we deserved this game I think we had a lot of chances to close this game.” Richard Sanchez held on to the shutout with several key saves in the match, including a final few minutes that kept both the fans at the stadium and those watching over the webcast
on the edge of their seats. Sanchez made an almost costly mistake when in the 90th minute it seemed he picked up the ball after having kicked it and the Silverbakcs received a free kick from just a few yards out. The Strikers put almost all their men on the goal and Sanchez deflected the kick, Atlanta’s Pablo Cruz found the rebound but his shot hit the crossbar and the Strikers were able to hold on to the shutout. Sanchez made several key saves throughout the match, including a stop on a strike by Borfor Carr in the 90th and later diving stop on a kick by Atlanta’s Brad Strisser in the closing minutes of extra time. The Silverbacks went a man down in the 45th minute when Atlanta’s Danny Barrera hit Manny Gonzalez with an elbow and was shown a red card.
