Boca’s Gov Campus Open House Results

Hundreds of residents turned out for the city’s open house Wednesday evening to introduce Boca Raton residents to the Terra Frisbie Group partner that council chose last week among four contenders for a new government campus downtown.

Renderings of proposed facilities like a Racket Center and Gym, and layouts with open and green space were on easels around the reception area in the city’s The Studio at Mizner Park. But most of the crowd and questions were centered around a large table with a model of the suggested layout for the campus, relocating city hall, the community center and police headquarters among other city facilities. “It’s real and its 3D. It orients them and you can see where you live and you can see the streets,” said the Frisbie Group’s Tina Thomson.

Eight Seniors (Ages 83 to 94) Prepare for B’nai Mitzvahs in Boca Raton

Eight seniors – ranging in age from 83 to 94 – spent the morning at B’nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton packing backpacks for homeless children in Palm Beach County. It is part of the seniors’ Mitzvah Projects, which are completed in advance of their B’nai Mitzvahs, or coming-of-age rituals.

In the Jewish religion, boys and girls traditionally become B’nai Mitzvahs at age 12 or 13; however, these

eight seniors are celebrating their B’nai Mitzvahs for the second (and for a few, the first) time…at age 83 (or older)!

The eight seniors are all members of B’nai Torah Congregation, which launched the “Eight-Three Club” three years ago. The program provides seniors the chance to become B’nai Mitzvahs for the first or second time. They will celebrate their B’nai Mitzvahs in late March.

Date Set For Master Plan on Boca’s Rec Needs

Expect a recreational master plan within 90 days to coordinate those needs with the city of Boca Raton’s planned downtown government campus.

“It may take a little longer,” Briann Harms, executive director told commissioners of the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District at their Feb. 18 meeting.

The city partners with the B&P on some recreational fields and facilities, and just chose Terra & Frisbe Group to develop their new government campus downtown. https://myboca.us/1431/ Government-Campus At their own public meetings, city staff and council have talked about relocating the field at Meadows Park and other rec facilities on Crawford Boulevard, and the Boca Raton Tennis Center across from city hall, and has asked the B&P for an assessment of recreational needs.

“We’re deciding what’s going where, and may have to look at residents vs. non-residents,” said Erin Wright, commissioner chair. Non-residents pay a higher fee for use of Boca’s public recreational facilities, including sports fields. “That was my concern,” said Commissioner Bob Rollins, adding it now costs non-residents $65 per child per sport to play in Boca Raton.

“It gets to the point where they may be forced out or priced out,” he said.

Commissioners also approved adding the cost for security cameras in the new inclusive playground in Patch Reef Park, one of the parks the Beach & Park District oversees. The city oversees the other parks in city limits.

“Broadcast Systems, the company responsible for security plans in our other parks and a trusted partner of the City of Boca Raton Police Department, has reviewed the playground plans and provided input on camera placement. They have marked up the site plan to ensure the installation meets our security needs,” according to the district’s agenda. “Installing the conduit now, before the playground is completed, will prevent the need for costly directional drilling and disruption to the site later. The total cost for this change order is $31,050, which includes conduit installation, pull strings, and contractor overhead and profit. This will be added to the existing contract with Shiff Construction & Development for the Patch Reef Park playground project.”

Make Up Your Mind to Manage Your Mind

“I have made up my mind to obey your laws forever, no matter what.” Psalm 119:112 (CEV)

People who learn how to fight the battle in their minds live more effective lives.

If you want to learn to manage your mind, you have to be delivered from destructive thoughts. That isn’t easy because you are in a battle with three enemies trying to control your thoughts.

The first enemy is your old nature. Paul says in Romans 7:23, “There is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me” (NLT).

Do you ever find yourself doing things you don’t really want to do? That’s

the battle in your mind between your old, sinful nature and your good intentions.

The second enemy is Satan. Satan cannot force you to do anything, but he can make suggestions. Those suggestions are incredibly powerful. He is constantly planting negative thoughts in your mind. He’ll use other people or what you watch on TV, or he’ll just throw a thought in your mind.

The third enemy is the world’s value system. Modern society rarely encourages self-discipline. Advertisements tell you things like, “You deserve a break today,” “Have it your way,” and “We do it all for you.” The Bible says in 1 John 2:16, “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from

the Father but from the world” (NIV). With enemies like that, no wonder people struggle with discouragement, despair, and failure!

So how do you fight this battle?

Look at what 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 says: “Though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (NIV).

You have a choice. God didn’t give you just a mind. He gave you a will too! Your mind has to listen to you. The Bible says, “I have made up my mind to

obey your laws forever, no matter what” (Psalm 119:112 CEV).PLAY today’s audio teaching from Pastor Rick

Satan knows that we all are tempted by different things. What does Satan most often use in your life to keep you focused on destructive thoughts and behaviors?

When have you experienced freedom and joy from choosing to follow God’s rules and instructions rather than giving in to temptation?

What steps can you take to memorize Scripture so that you can more effectively battle temptation?

What ‘Morning Joe’s’ Scarborough Said at FAU

Joe Scarborough was back on TV as co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday morning after his take on the start of President Trump’s second term at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Thursday afternoon.

More than 1,800 people, a record for the Larkin lecture series, turned out to hear his talk on “The Presidency After the 2024 Election: The Story So Far and What Comes Next.” A self-described conservative as a former Florida Republican congressman, he referenced historical figures the audience would know, from President Ronald Reagan and Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill, and how well they worked together despite political differences.

“These are unsettling times, but throughout history provides insight and where we’re going,” he said, quoting Winston Churchill: “The farther back you look, the farther forward you can see.” “We’ve lost something now, but we can get it back,” he said, kidding that his wife and co-host Mika Brzezinski “would say, Joe, you’re being too optimistic.”

“President Trump is pushing the boundaries of president authority..,” Scarborough continued, listing what Trump has done so far. “It’s by de -

sign and meant to be overwhelming and confusing,” he said, jokingly calling himself “your grief counselor.”

“What is meant to provoke you? What is the signal? What are the ground rules? Don’t overgeneralize,” he advised.

He cited historical examples of Republican victories in the same year as Democratic wins. “Arizona voted for Trump but elected Ruben Galle -

go as the state’s first Latin senator on the same day,” he said. “We are a plaid American. Don’t count the votes, always the balances of the American voter.”

Quoting the financial guru Warren Buffett, “Only a fool about vote again America,” he said to address U.S. security concerns.

In a Q&A with associate history professor and the symposium’s direc-

tor Nicole Anslover, Scarborough said Trump may not be a planner personally, but his actions are “all planned. Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation describe it perfectly…and will push the boundaries of presidential power as much as they can.”

“We’ve got to find a way to bring this country together,” he concluded.

Scarborough got scattered applause sporadically and kidded about “this audience is completely silent when I talk about Republicans.” The audience left quickly after he finished, and he shook a few hands from the stage before leaving. He did a one-hour meet-and-greet for VIPs before his speech.

David Larkin, the son of the late Alan B. Larkin, spoke, adding his mother’s name to the Charna & Alan B. Larkin Symposium on the American Presidency. Interim FAU president Dr. Stacy Volnick announced that FAU had awarded an honorary degree to Charna Larkin, who is 96.

Also on Thursday, an attorney and former Florida House Majority leader Adam Hasner was approved by the state as the new president of FAU. He was elected among three finalists by the university’s trustees.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow plasma cells—white blood cells that make antibodies. A cancerous or malignant plasma cell is called a myeloma cell. Myeloma is called “multiple” because there are frequently multiple patches or areas in bone where it grows. It can appear as both a tumor and/or an area of bone loss, and it affects the places where bone marrow is active in an adult: the hollow area within the bones of the spine, skull, pelvis, rib cage, and the areas around the shoulders and hips.

Founded in 1990, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is the first and largest global foundation focusing specifically on multiple myeloma. The Foundation’s reach extends to more than 525,000 members in 140 countries worldwide. The IMF is dedicated to improving the quality of life of myeloma patients while working toward prevention and a cure by focusing on four key areas: research, education, support, and advocacy. The IMF has conducted more than 250 educational seminars worldwide, maintains a world-renowned InfoLine, and in 2001, established the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG), a collaborative research initiative focused on improving myeloma treatment options for patients. How to Pick the Right Plants for Your Location

(StatePoint) When planning your yard or garden, you likely focus on the what and the where. After all, a beautiful plant in a prime location enhances curb appeal and even bragging rights.

You may pay less attention though to understanding how your location, or plant hardiness zone, impacts your garden’s success. To help ensure your plants don’t just survive, but thrive, the experts at lawn care equipment manufacturer Exmark are sharing the following insights about plant hardiness:

What is Plant Hardiness?

Plant hardiness is the secret sauce of any healthy outdoor space. Plant

hardiness is the ability of a plant to survive adverse growing conditions such as drought, flooding, heat and cold. Have you ever watched with frustration as a late-season temperature dip leaves your beautiful buds with a serious case of frostbite? Plant hardiness zones were developed to help landscapers, gardeners and lawn care enthusiasts avoid this heartache.

American farming contributes billions of dollars to the gross national product annually, which is one reason why the USDA has long monitored weather data. If determining when the average final frost may occur for every region in the country is worth billions, what could that same knowledge mean for your garden? Well, choosing plants with hardiness levels appropriate to specific planting zones gives you the best chance of cultivating healthy, beautiful plants.

What is My Growing Zone?

The United States is divided into 13 zones. Zones 1-6 being the coldest, and 7-13 the warmest. Zone 1 averages -60

degrees F while zone 13 never drops below 70 degrees F. A general guideline is to plant anything designated for your zone or lower, but never higher. Know what zone you live in and make a point of checking the tag on the back of the plant or seed pack before planting.

Perennials Versus Annuals

There’s a reason you see palm trees in Sarasota, Florida, not Saginaw, Michigan. When it comes to perennials, it’s not about when the first frost is, but how cold it gets, and whether that plant can survive and thrive through winter.

Plant hardiness zones are less important however when it comes to annuals. Because these plants are only meant to last one growing season; waiting until after the average first frost date will save you from having to re-plant. Know that even if your plant survives the frost, it may never match the photo you saw advertised at the nursery.

Planting Zone Rule of Thumb

Plant hardiness zone maps are, well,

all over the map. Consider the number assigned to your zip code as a starting point. You may live right at the break between one zone and the other. When in doubt, guess too low, rather than too high. In the South, the heat stress a plant not made for the conditions. Your particular geography can also affect your hardiness zone, like if you live on a hill or in a valley.

For more insights, check out the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, and watch “Find Your Plant Hardiness Zone,” an episode of “Backyard Smart,” an original series from lawn care equipment manufacturer, Exmark. To watch the video, visit Backyard Life, which is part of a unique multimedia destination with a focus on helping homeowners improve their outdoor living spaces. There you can also download additional tips and view other Exmark Original Series videos.

Understanding what plants will thrive in your climate is essential to a healthy landscape. Fortunately, free resources abound to help you plant successfully.

The Terra Frisbie Group also had a QR code table for feedback later. And the city had signs for the government campus screens on the city website https://myboca.us/1431/Government-Campus and comment cards on tables.

This was a real open house with no speeches, although Deputy City Manager Chrissy Gibson, other city staff and city council members Marc Wigder and Fran Nachlas were there. So were longtime local architects in Boca Raton, among them Juan Caycedo, Derrick Vander Ploeg and George Garcia. City residents who may or not be directly affected by final plans and construction attended in droves. Judith Teller Kaye brought 16 questions, among them plans for more parking and traffic lights. One member of the city’s Tennis Center across from City Hall carried a sign. Speakers at city meetings now held in the 6500 Congress Ave. building, not city hall, have expressed concerns about relocating recreational facilities like the tennis center and sports fields like Meadows Field behind city hall.

City council has made it clear that nothing has been agreed on, and public comment sessions are included in three city meetings on Feb. 24, 25, and a fourth on March 17. The next step in the process is an interim agreement with the Terra Frisbie Group scheduled for March 18.

Coming This Weekend: Arts Garage in Delray Beach is Presenting axes, herbs and satchels

(Delray Beach, FL – February 20, 2025) Marjorie Waldo, President & CEO of Arts Garage, today reminded theater fans that the nonprofit organization is presenting a world premiere production this weekend as part of its ongoing Artists-in-Residence (AiR) series, which is underwritten by a grant from the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County’s Cultural Arts & Education Fund.

The production—axes, herbs and satchels—was developed and performed by The Anthropologists, one of New York City’s leading devised theatre companies, which is dedicated to “the

collaborative creation of investigative theatre that inspires action.” According to its Mission Statement, the group fuses “research, expressive movement, and rigorous dramaturgy (to) create dynamic plays rooted in social inquiry.”

“Ever since it was founded in 2008, The Anthropologists have used theatre to engage with challenging questions, to re-contextualize the present and reimagine our collective future— and that’s exactly what this dynamic group will be doing at Arts Garage,” says Waldo.

February 23 (Sunday) at 7 pm

AXES, HERBS AND SATCHELS

Performed by The Anthropologists

Black and brown birthing bodies are in danger. Can the silenced traditions of Black midwives hold the key to saving them? With a company of six Black women and femme performers, axes, herbs and satchels travels across generations with storytelling, movement, and ritual. Developed through extensive ethnographic research and personal accounts, this stunning new

play opens a space for collective learning and profound healing.

Rooted in the history and embodied wisdom of doulas and midwives, axes, herbs and satchels is a celebration of traditional knowledge held in the Black birth worker community and a potent examination of maternal mortality.

The United States has a maternal mortality rate that is three times higher than any other high-income country. Black and Indigenous birthing people are particularly at risk, with death rates up to three times more likely than their white counterparts. Modern medicine may be at our fingertips, but did it come at the cost of losing the ancient practices of doulas and midwives?

The play is being devised from an array of research materials; first-hand accounts, medical textbooks, ethnological research, and primary sources documenting grand midwives and the history of midwifery.

The team behind and starring in axes, herbs and satchels include Co-Director/Co-Writer Melissa Moschitto, Co-Director/Performer Sandie Luna,

and Performer/Devisers Jalissa Fulton, Asha John, and Brianna Johnson, Performer Shakerria Breonie Henderson, and Deviser/Contributing Writer Devynity Wray.

Pre-Show Open Rehearsal & Talkback:

“Arts Garage will present a unique opportunity to engage with axes, herbs and satchels by featuring an open rehearsal and talkback session,” adds Waldo. “We are extending this invitation to local high school and college students, with a special opportunity for participants in Acting for Adults, a long-time adult arts education course, to gain insight into the artistic process. This is an enriching experience designed to foster creativity and dialogue among aspiring young artists.”

How to Purchase Tickets to axes, herbs and satchels:

Tickets are $50 each (including fees) and can be purchased by calling Arts Garage at 561.450.6357 or by going online to www.ArtsGarage.org.

OBITUARY

Frances Lily Steiner

October 2, 1941 – February 11, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Frances Lily Steiner, the loving wife of Sydney J. Steiner (deceased), the caring sister of Jack Kimel (deceased) and Dori (and Derek) Finn, and the cherished mother of Honey Steiner (deceased), David Steiner, and Janine (and Sasha) Jovanovic. She was a proud and adoring grandmother to Franky Bernstein, Sami (and Andrew) Spalter, Noah (and Shelby) Steiner, Max Jovanovic, and Roman Jovanovic, and the great-grandmother of Ivy Jean.

Frances passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. A long-time resident of Dallas, Texas, Frances was born in Siberia,

Russia, on October 2, 1941. As a young child, she survived the Holocaust. Her remarkable resilience, courage and devotion to her family were forged in those early, defining years. At the age of five, she moved with her family to Toronto, Canada, where she would later build a beautiful life of her own.

For sixty years, Frances was completely devoted to her beloved husband, Sydney. Together, they built not only a family but a legacy, rooted in love, strength, and unwavering commitment to their bond. Their union inspired all who were fortunate to know them.

Frances took immense pride in her family. A devoted homemaker, she had a deep and abiding love for gardening, cooking, and baking, all of which she ap-

proached with grace, creativity, and joy. Throughout her life, she prioritized upholding Jewish traditions and instilling them in her family.

Frances was a woman of beauty, intelligence, and worldly charm. Her love for fine art, antiques, and wine was matched only by her generosity and passion for the arts in both Dallas and Toronto. Through her support and involvement, she touched the hearts of many, leaving an indelible mark on the communities she held dear.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, funeral services were held privately. Frances’s legacy of love, grace, and dedication to her family will continue to inspire and live on in all who had the privilege of knowing her.
