Boca Airport Opens Public Observation Area

Want to see corporate jets and private aircraft take off and land right here in Boca? Now’s your chance.

Boca Raton Airport officially opened a free observation platform overlooking the runway. Available to the public from dawn to dusk, flight observers will find a flying wing covering a circular open-air platform. Handrails along a paved ramp lead to a 4-foothigh deck with four long benches. “We wanted this to be accessible on both sides, even if you use a walker, wheelchair or stroller,” said designer Sharon Kay Hauber.

There’s a speaker to hear what the FAA Contract Tower located on the field is saying to pilots. In front is a green directional pole with airport names including Key West and a marker for the Grand Bahamas and other airports pilots come and go from. Four signs strategically placed along the platform railing explain the airport’s origins as a WWII Army Airfield, its current

navigational aids, a list of aircraft and endangered species that share the space.

The groundbreaking was in July, and by now the deck was already at -

tracting observers. On Tuesday, local VIPs and the airport’s partners on this venture gathered for the official opening and ribbon cutting. But this one was different. Airport Authority chairman

Bob Tucker, who originated the observation area idea, interviewed Anthony Greco Jr., 12, a seventh-grader with pilot aspirations. He represents the future of young people who plan to go into aviation, Tucker told the crowd. “We aim to inspire youngsters with the magic of flight.”

“This was an opportunity for us to give back to the community that has supported us for 75 years,” airport executive director Clara Bennett said in her welcome, as she and other speakers were temporarily drowned out by incoming and outgoing aircraft. Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer spoke about the airport’s economic development for the city, and FAU Research Park president Andrew Duffel praised the project as the airport’s landlord.

After the ribbon-cutting the crowd dispersed, but Anthony stood alone at the railing on top, quietly watching the airplanes take off and land.

Should Boca Cover Mizner Park Amphitheater?

Should the city’s open-air Mizner Park Amphitheater have a retractable roof to protect spectators from the weather after all these years?

That’s back on city council’s drawingboard now that plans for a new downtown performing arts center were terminated by the planner in January.

“What to do next? Is there an appetite for capital improvements?” downtown district chair Fran Nachlas asked her fellow council members sitting as CRA commissioners at Monday’s regular meeting. The answer was a resounding ‘yes.’

“We should take a serious look at the aging infrastructure,” including backstage dressing rooms and other areas to attract more vendors who want to use the amphitheater as a ticketed rental venue, City Manager George S. Brown said, adding the city needs a consultant to explore its options.

er proposed “something moderate like seven figures” cost to the city finan cially.

sioner/Deputy Mayor Yvette Drucker agreed, adding roof fixes already cost the city money every year. “You need to be protected from the elements.”

a longer vision for the next 15 years,” said commissioner/councilman Marc Wigder.

needed. “Mr. Brown has consensus to move forward,” said commissioner/ councilman Andy Thomson.

It’s temporarily tented for Festival of the Arts BOCA every year, and some years remained tented for other events. This year’s Festival is Feb. 28 through March 9.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Many people misunderstand the term “destiny.” They think it means unalterable conclusion—that it is fate or karma or that you can’t change it. Some people think that God determines your destiny, and it’s going to happen no matter what you do.

In fact, that’s not what God says. The Bible teaches two very important truths about your destiny.

One is that God’s destiny for your life is good. A lot of people think their destiny is bad or negative. But the Bible says in Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans

KARTIK

Your Destiny is Your Choice

to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (NIV). God says his plan—his destiny—for your life is a good plan.

You may have had a terrible or painful past. But the truth is, the story isn’t over.

The second truth about your destiny is this: You get to choose it. Did you know that? The Bible says that God gives you a choice. You can reject the good destiny God has planned for you. It’s not automatic.

Joshua learned this lesson as he was about to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering in the desert. In Deuteronomy 30:15-16 God says, “Today I offer you life and prosperity or death and destruction. This is what I’m commanding you

today: Love the LORD your God, follow his directions, and obey his commands, laws, and rules. Then you will live, your population will increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you’re about to enter and take possession of” (GW).

Notice two things about Joshua’s experience. First, God had prepared a destiny for the children of Israel. He told them he’d already chosen that land for them and was going to give it to them. It was the Promised Land after all! But second, he said, you’re going to have to possess it. I’m not just going to hand it to you on a platter. You have to make the choice.

God wants you to succeed in life with the good destiny he’s planned for you. Here’s my question: Would you like to live life being who God made you to be, do-

ing what he made you to do, and having what he made you to have? It’s not automatic. God says it’s your choice.

Talk It Over

Can you look back on your life and see times when God’s blessings came after you made a choice to move forward in faith?

What barriers have you seen that keep people from choosing to live the life God wants them to live?

What might God be asking you to do today in order to choose the destiny he has planned for you?

Spady Museum Honors Founder Vera Farrington at Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch

Delray Beach, FL – The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum welcomed more than 350 guests to celebrate the legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Vera Rolle Farrington at its signature Dr. King Brunch.

Held January 20 at Indian Spring Country Club, the event featured uplifting musical performances by the St. John Primitive Baptist Church Praise Team and a dramatic performance by actor Tiffany Terrell, who portrayed voting rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer.

Guest speaker Don Mizell, Esq. regaled the audience with the behind-thescenes stories of how famed musician Stevie Wonder spearhead the creation of the Dr. King, Jr. national holiday. Mizell had a close relationship with the international artist, recalling with humor and sharpness how they pulled off one of the greatest marketing campaigns in American history.

But at the heart of the event was a remembrance of Spady Museum Founder, the late Vera Farrington, who passed away on Sunday, January 12,

2025. She was 95 years old. Farrington’s daughter, Charlene Farrington, serves as the museum’s Executive Director.

“In honor of my mother, we will continue to bring people together around Black history,” Charlene said. The Spady House will celebrate its

100th anniversary in 2026; the museum staff has plans for a series of private and public fundraisers in 2025 to ensure that the “House Still Stands” in Delray Beach.

Is It Recyclable? Food and Beverage Cans

Boca Raton, FL – Today, many things are recyclable, but not everything. Palm Beach County’s dual-stream recycling program only accepts certain items for recycling. Food and beverage cans are two of them. They, along with pet food cans, go into the blue recycling bin.

It doesn’t matter if the metal cans are made from aluminum or steel. The different metals are separated by type at different points along the blue recycling processing line. Once sorted from the other blue recycling bin materials, food and beverage cans are delivered to manufacturers to make new products. You can watch the sorting online.

The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County encourages you to empty the cans. But you don’t have to clean them or remove the labels.

Recycled aluminum cans can be processed and put back into use within 60 days.

In 2023, more than 11,000 tons of aluminum and steel cans were recycled.

If you have more food and beverage cans than can fit into your blue recycling bin, you can take them to one of seven Home Chemical & Recycling Centers (HCRC). Here are the SWA’s seven HCRC locations from north county to south county:

Expanding Paid Family Medical Leave Positions Moms and Babies to Thrive

(StatePoint) Paid leave prevents workers and their families from falling down a financial rabbit hole when breadwinners need time away from their jobs to care for a loved one, a newborn child or to address their own serious health issue. For new moms, infants

and toddlers, these programs are vital.

As of January 2025, only 13 states and Washington D.C. have or will soon have statewide paid family and medical leave programs in place. Expanding paid family and medical leave programs nationwide is an important matter of equity and security. This is because just 27% of workers have paid family leave through their jobs absent a state policy, and low-wage workers are 10 times less likely to have access than the highest-paid workers.

“For all too many families, caring for a newborn child means being at risk for falling behind on rent, groceries, gas and other day-to-day essentials,” says Katie Bishop Kendrick, national senior advocacy consultant, National Collaborative for Infants and Toddlers. “During these critical months after the birth of a

new child, new parents should have the time needed to bond with and properly care for their newborns, and to rest and heal after giving birth.”

A growing body of research shows that paid family and medical leave not only helps individuals and families, it benefits communities and is good for business. These programs are associated with greater workforce retention, are estimated to reduce the share of workers who are poor, and are found to reduce the use of other public benefit programs, according to Urban Institute research for the U.S. Department of Labor. While there are concerns that state leave programs will lead to overuse, or unmanageable hits to a state’s workforce, program data shows that only a small share of workers (about 3-7%) use state paid leave programs each year.

Some states use a fixed percentage approach to wage replacement while others follow a sliding-scale. States also fund their programs differently. Advocates say that no matter what model is followed, one thing is clear: comprehensive, universal state paid leave provides financial security to working people at minimal individual cost.

For more information about paid family and medical leave programs, visit ncit.org.

“Paid family and medical leave positions families and babies to thrive,” says Bishop Kendrick. “Federal lawmakers should use comprehensive state programs as examples to design a national program. Doing so will ensure more American families have the resources they need during this foundational period in a child’s life.”

• 1/2 can Amy’s Organic 3 Bean Vegetable Chili

• 1 1/2 ounce mature cheddar, grated

• 1 teaspoon nigella seeds

Directions:

1. Place a large frying pan over high heat and char the whole corn on all sides for 10 minutes, turning regularly until slightly blackened. Remove to a board and cut off all the kernels into a bowl.

2. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and line a 10-inch ovenproof skillet pan.

3. Tip the flour, baking powder, cayenne pepper and 1 teaspoon salt into a bowl and whisk together.

4. In another bowl, mix together the yogurt, oil, polenta, maple syrup and vinegar; whisk until combined.

5. Pour the wet mix into the dry ingredients and fold to combine. Add the green onions, feta and charred corn and stir again.

6. Pour the cornbread mix into the prepared skillet. Add small spoonfuls of Amy’s Organic Spicy Chili on top. Top with grated cheddar and nigella seeds. Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until risen and a skewer comes out clean.

7. Enjoy while warm or serve at room temperature. Best eaten that day.

Pro tip: Serve alongside smashed avocado or fresh tomato salsa. Slice the cornbread up, pop into the freezer and when you fancy a slice, simply defrost and reheat in the toaster.

UF/IFAS Guide Empowers Communities of All Ages to Explore Tiny but Mighty Hoppers

Boca Raton, FL – Spotted a tiny, colorful critter hopping on a leaf and wondered what it was up to? Meet the hoppers — leafhoppers, planthoppers and treehoppers.

These tiny acrobatic insects aren’t just charming to watch; they are economically important, and scientists need to know more about them. Thanks to a recently published Ask IFAS guide from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, anyone at any age with a curious eye and a smartphone can become a “hopper hero,” uncovering the secrets of these unassuming insects and helping science leap forward with much-needed data.

“Hoppers are one of the more diverse groups of insects, but most people don’t even know they exist because of their size and habitat,” said Brian Bahder, lead author of the peer-reviewed document and associate professor of insect vector ecology at UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center.

Leafhoppers, planthoppers and treehoppers are more than just backyard curiosities. Some species are pests of important agricultural crops, underscoring the need to understand their behaviors and distributions better, said Bahder.

To expand understanding of these fascinating insects, the guide encourages citizen scientists to participate by identifying and documenting hoppers using iNaturalist, a free and user-friendly platform that turns a smartphone or computer into a nature detective’s toolkit. By capturing photos of hoppers and sharing them online, participants add valuable data to a global biodiversity database.

The guide provides easy step-by-step instructions to identify hoppers and upload observations. Participants join a global community, helping researchers and conservationists protect our planet — making it the ultimate sidekick for hopper-hunting adventures.

“Hoppers are often under-reported compared to other, easier-to-spot groups of wildlife,” said Corey Callaghan, an author of the document and assistant professor of global ecology, also at the Fort

Lauderdale research center. “Uploading these observations can be very valuable to understand basic patterns of where hoppers are and when they are there.”

Hoppers are not only diverse in their roles but also in their appearance. From leafhoppers adorned with vibrant colors to treehoppers sporting spiny or thornlike structures, these insects are masters of adaptation. Some species camouflage into their surroundings, making spotting them a fun challenge for nature enthusiasts. The guide includes photos and tips to help users identify species and appreciate the remarkable variety within these insect groups.

Equipped with piercing-sucking mouthparts, many hoppers feed on plant sap, a behavior that connects them to plant health and disease. Some species, like planthoppers, are known carriers of plant pathogens, making their documentation even more critical for agriculture and conservation efforts. The guide sheds light on these feeding behaviors and their broader implications for ecosystems.

The guide emphasizes both the joy of discovery and the importance of accuracy. By documenting species identification, precise locations and seasonal patterns, citizen scientists help researchers analyze trends, monitor environmental changes and address emerging issues like invasive species and climate shifts, said Callaghan.

Citizen participation in science across all age groups is increasingly vital for addressing various research topics, environmental challenges and stewardship needs. A recent study by Callaghan highlights the growing influence of citizen science data in the United States, showing how public involvement is shaping policy and decision-making. By contributing observations, such as identifying hoppers, participants engage with nature and contribute to a broader network of data that informs conservation strategies and research development.

Free Community Walk Event will Raise $150K for Special Needs & Disability Programs in Palm Beach County

Boca Raton, FL — On Sunday, March 2nd, over 1,000 participants and guests will attend Boca Raton’s third annual “Walk4Friendship”, a fundraising event put on by Friendship House Boca to support programs for individuals of all ages with special needs in South Florida. Free and open to the public, this family-friendly event promises a day full of fun, excitement, and heartwarming meaningful activities designed to bring our community together.

“”In our fast-paced world, Walk4Friendship reminds us to slow down and appreciate the unique gifts each person brings to our community,” said Rabbi Sholom Ber Kessler, director of Friendship House and organizer of the event. “Each year, this walk grows bigger, but our message stays the same: Here in South Florida, no one should walk alone.”

Founded in 2020, the Friendship House of Boca Raton is devoted to enriching the lives of young people with disabilities in Palm Beach County. They run monthly, inclusive programs for children, teens and adults with disabilities, partnering them with volunteers from high schools and the community to build bridges of friendship and understanding between people of all abilities.

“We’ve been very impressed with the Friendship House’s events. Our son, Josh, has been attending activities for the past 2 years, and especially loves seeing his friends at the sports and Sunday circles,” said Nancy Koiles, a local mom. “As a family, we have begun attending a number of events and programs which have helped us build connections with other families.”

The walk will commence with registration and an opening ceremony at 10:00 am, followed by the one-mile walk. Walk T-shirts will be provided for all participants and a carnival will be held from 12 to 2 pm. Exciting entertainment will include carnival rides, moon bounces, a rock-climbing wall,

and an acrobatic performance by the ChicagoBoyz, made famous from their appearance on America’s Got Talent. Delicious Kosher Hot dogs, burgers, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase.

“Friendship House draws inspiration from the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, who taught that while each individual has different talents and abilities, every individual who fulfills his or her obligations to the extent of their G - d-given capacities shares in the totality of the effort and accomplishment,” added Kessler.

FRIENDSHIP HOUSE OF BO -

CA RATON: Established in 2020, The Friendship House pairs volunteers with children, teens, and young adults with disabilities, building an inclusive community through a variety of social and educational programs in the greater Boca Raton area. Our vision is a community where people with special needs are included in every aspect and are provided with the support and opportunities to live happy & productive lives. For more information visit www.bocafriendship.com

BOCA RATON SPECIAL NEEDS STATS: The Boca Raton community has a rapidly growing population of children with special needs. According to the CDC research reports for 2015-17, 17% of children aged 3-17 years had a developmental disability, and even more importantly, the percentage is increasing each year. This segment of our society is falling through the cracks and in tremendous need of resources and support. Without programs like Friendship House, children and youth with special needs often find themselves isolated from everyday activities and socialization opportunities, lack friends, and feel lonesome and forgotten.
