Boca Raton Regional Hospital officially broke ground today for the new Gloria Drummond Patient Tower, the facility that is the cornerstone for the hospital’s campus transformation and the $250 million Keeping the Promise capital campaign.

At the center of the day’s celebratory event was Elaine J. Wold and the Bay Branch Foundation who made a $25 million gift to Keeping the Promise and named the tower in memory of Boca Regional’s founder, Gloria Drummond.

“I believe we all have a responsibility to improve the level of health care in our area, to forge new directions, and bring new medicine to our families here,” said Mrs. Wold.

Boca Helping Hands Expands Hunger Relief Boca Helping Hands (BHH) recently expanded its food distribution schedule in Lake Worth as part of the organization’s hunger relief efforts in Palm Beach County.

COMMUNITY Two FAU Students Named 2022 Goldwater Scholars Florida Atlantic University students Kate Maier and Samantha Zaninelli have been named 2022 Goldwater Scholars. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is the most prestigious national research fellowship for undergraduate students.

Maier and Zaninelli were selected from a pool of 1,242 students from 433 institutions across the country. This is the first time in FAU history a student has been named a Goldwater Scholar.

“We could not be prouder of Samantha and Kate,” said Donna Chamely-Wiik, Ph.D., associate dean for Undergraduate Research and Prestigious Fellowships and associate scientist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “Their curiosity and passion for research, and determination for making their mark in science is refreshing. As undergraduates, they are already contributing original work to the scientific community as published authors. These scholars are setting the foundation to become successful doctoral students and the next generation of cutting-edge researchers.”

Maier, 18, is a junior, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, and a dual-enrolled FAU High School senior. Her research focuses on computer vision and computational approaches in neuroscience under the mentorship of Salil Bidaye, Ph.D., through the MaryLynn Magar Data Science Fellowship at FAU High School in partnership with Max Planck Academy.

“After obtaining a Ph.D. in computational neuroscience, my goal is to start an independent lab to investigate diverse brain functions through computational modeling,” said Maier. “My mentors have been integral in shaping my research trajectory, and I would love to take up the mantle, mentoring the next generation of scientists.”

Maier also conducted computer vision research for biomedical and neuroscience applications with Oge Marques, Ph.D., professor in FAU’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and David Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., chief executive officer and scientific director at Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience.

Her research accomplishments include first authorship on a publication with Marques,

multiple research presentations, along with an impressive academic record.

“This exceptional honor is a testament to Kate’s dedication and passion for serving the neuroscience community,” said Joel Herbst, Ed.D., superintendent of schools at FAU Lab Schools. “The intersection of investigating brain functions and computational modeling create genuine awe for anybody fortunate enough to see her work. Her body of work is furthered by her desire to give back to the research community both at FAU High School and The Max Planck Academy. Our entire school community is honored by the exceptional impact Kate’s work will have on furthering the field of neuroscience.”

Zaninelli, 19, is a first-generation college student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. Her research area focuses on behavioral neuroscience, under the guidance of her primary research mentor Erik Duboué, Ph.D. assistant professor of biology in Wilkes Honors College.

Zaninelli was selected as only one of four students to be part of the National Institute of Health (NIH)-URISE training program, an NIH funded program to promote underrepresented minority students in science and prepare them for graduate school. She is also a published author, with a manuscript in the journal Evolution.

“My goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience,” said Zaninelli. “I would also like to lead an academic research team conducting evolutionary neuroscience research examining how our brain has evolved in terms of physiology and cognition.”

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency. The scholarship program honoring U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

Maier and Zaninelli applied for the Goldwater Scholarship with assistance from FAU’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry and Prestigious Fellowships. For more information on Prestigious Fellowships, visit fau.edu/fellowships.

Starting April 16, commu n i t y m e m b e r s will be able to take home up to three packets of seeds each month, which have been donated by the Seed Savers Exchange and other seed companies. Hundreds Pay Respects to Business, Charity, Family Icon ‘Jay’ DiPietro By: Dale King Emidio Armando DiPietro, a legendary South Florida businessman, charitable donor, benefactor and mentor for needy kids, a Korean War veteran, devoted family man and renowned hospitality maven – was known by many other names: ‘Jay’ DiPietro, JD, Mr. D, Dad and his most loving and spot-on sobriquet, Papa Jay. The distinguished gentleman who dedicated 32 years to transforming Boca West Country Club from a marginal venture to a sparkling gem of world-class country club living, passed away March 6 in the loving comfort of his home.

Under his leadership, Boca West Country Club received many awards for distinguished club and platinum standings and has been ranked number one in the country for private residential country clubs. It became Number One in the state of Florida for all types of clubs, and fifth in the world.

His love affair for Boca West Country Club is where his true legacy began. BWCC continues to promote his legacy with the incredible namesake, Mr. D’s restaurant. This is also where his legendary life of charitable “giving back” became his mission. As a result, thousands of special needs and underprivileged children have become beneficiaries of his loving and caring generosity.

A memorial service held Monday morning at First Baptist Fort Lauderdale Church quickly turned into a family affair. After vocalist Dawn Marie sang “Ave Maria,” prayers were offered by host pastor, James Welch, and Pastor Larry Thompson.

Jay’s kin came to the altar to offer comments about their famed Papa: Richard DiPietro, his brother; John Gandolfo, a cousin; Nikki DiPietro, a niece; Zachary Neeld and Dillion DiPietro, grandsons and Frank DiPietro and Bryan Doughty, two of his sons.

A few miles north, and a few hours later, hundreds of friends, colleagues, relatives, admirers, Boca West residents, politicians, athletes and others from Boca’s illuminati gathered in the massive dining room of Boca West Country Club – a place where Jay had spent countless enjoyable hours – to offer homage to the man who first learned to work in the dining trade at age 11, at a restaurant in his native Boston.

Emcee Neil Saffer told the crowd that took time at mid-day to share stories and recollections of the revered hospitality maven that they had gathered “in the house that Jay built.”

Matt Linderman, who succeeded Jay as Boca West’s president, COO and general manager, continued that metaphor. “If Yankee Stadium was the house that Babe Ruth built, then Boca West is the house that DiPietro built.”

He told of losing his own dad when he was 11. “Jay truly became a father figure in my life. While we mourn the loss of Jay, we honor a life well lived. Rest in peace, Papa Jay.” Tears were profuse at the “celebration of life” that included an opulent buffet, one that would have made Jay proud.

“He made this place the top community of its kind in the world,” said John Temple, past president of Arvida Corp. which developed the country club community before it was renamed Boca West. He noted that the institution was “losing $1 to $2 million a year” until Jay was brought in as its new boss. “The first year, he made $2 million.”

Fighting off tears, Temple offered a “God bless you, Jay,” to his beloved friend.

Particularly touching were comments from Michael McCarthy, CEO of Addison Reserve Country Club in Delray Beach, reading from a letter he sent to Jay shortly before his passing.

“My life wouldn’t be what it is without Jay,” he said as tears welled up. “When a mentor be-

comes a best friend, it’s magical. This is what you are, Jay, to me.”

Growing up in Boston, the oldest of seven first-generation Americans of Italian lineage, Jay earned his first wages working at the Hampshire House restaurant. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the Korean War where he volunteered to spiff up what had been called “The Mess Hall.”

He began his career as a manager trainee and later as a manager with the Playboy organization, followed by positions at Holiday Inn hotels, Restaurant Associates New York and Boston and Longchamps of Florida. He managed and operated five high-end restaurants in Miami-Dade County before becoming the general manager at the Bal Harbour Yacht & Beach Club, which was his entry into the private club industry.

Keynote speaker at Monday’s “celebration of life,” District 5 Palm Beach County Commissioner Maria Sachs, told how Mr. DiPietro “went down every path in his life with style, whether as a leader of industry or a leader in hospitality.”

“Jay loved to have fun,” she noted. “Today, Jay is still with us. His heart beats in every child whose life he changed.”

Mr. DiPietro founded and chaired the Club Managers of America Seminole Region Chapter Charity Golf Tournament and Gala to benefit underprivileged children. Under his leadership, it raised more than $6.7 million for Special Olympics Palm Beach County, SOS Children’s Village Florida, Place of Hope, Florence Fuller Child Development Center, 4Kids, Unicorn Children’s Foundation, the George Snow Foundation, First Tee of Palm Beach Gardens and Achievement Centers for Children in Delray Beach, to name a few.

Jay’s charitable reach didn’t stop with children. He felt an immense passion for animals in need and wholeheartedly supported his wife, Sharon, in her endeavors as the chairwoman of Tri-County Animal Rescue.

He was a pillar of the community, serving on many charity boards and receiving distinguished community honors –the Rotary Club OPAL Award, Florence Fuller Man with a Caring Heart Award as well as the Man with the Biggest Heart and Lifetime Achievement Award. SOS Children’s Villages named him Florida’s Outstanding Individual of the Year.

Survivors, besides his loving and devoted wife, Sharon and their “furbabies,” Bella and Baer, are his children, Joseph & Silvia DiPietro, Sterling (Todd) & Deana Fisher, Richard & Kimber DiPietro, LeAnna Doughty, Jay & Lora DiPietro, Clay Fisher, Frank & Judi DiPietro, Bryan Doughty, Michael Jay & Cheri DiPietro, and his chosen daughter, Darlene & Billy Wright. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as sisters Angela Lombardi (Arthur), Carmella DiPietro and brothers Joseph DiPietro, Richard DiPietro, Bruce Rowe, and Janice DiPietro, surviving spouse of Robert DiPietro. Many nieces and nephews also survive their illustrious uncle.

Jay was preceded in death by his loving parents, Armando and Josephine DiPietro, his brothers, Frank DiPietro, Pasquale (Pat) DiPietro and Robert DiPietro.

It Only Takes One Dedicated Mentor to Shape a Child’s Future ‘The children are our future.’ We often say those words, but what if a child takes a wrong turn in life, becomes ensnared in crime, drug-addiction or suicide and self-destruction? If children are truly our future, then we adults owe them a helping hand in shaping it. We can do so through mentoring.

As a children’s advocate and founder of the KOP Mentoring Network here in Palm Beach County, I believe every young person needs a caring adult mentor to provide encouragement and support to succeed in school and in life. Many of us have the power to truly impact their future by simply showing up as a caring friend and mentor.

We have seen the benefits of mentoring in addressing our schools’ graduation rates, which, have been increasing in recent years here in South Florida

and across the nation. In what can only be described as good news, the Palm Beach County School District again has a graduation rate that has outperformed other large school districts in Florida.

More public-school students are graduating than ever as the district’s graduation rate rose from 90 percent in 2017 to 91.7 percent in 2018.

The improvement is due in part to adult volunteers who have come forward to help poorly performing students stay on track academically. Nationally, onethird of all high schools provide mentors to their students, which amounts to one in 10 high school students, according to an U.S. Department of Education analysis. The study showed “some significant evidence” that suggests programs that provide high school students adult volunteers may help students stay

in school.

At KOP Mentoring Network, we see the fruits of mentoring in our Oratorical, STRE2AM2, and Wealth Building and Entrepreneurship programs. Some of our students come from homes that have incarcerated parents or guardians.

Without intervention these children are more likely to follow that same path.

While our mentors help build student academic skills, the underlying theme for us is making our students see that someone cares enough to be there and expects the best from them.

Our mentors are ordinary people who serve as advisers and teachers. They are motivators and role models, who believe in the students we work with. We see the potential and work hard in helping students get to where they want to go. The youngsters participating in the

KOP Monitoring Network are less likely to use drugs and alcohol and less likely to skip school. They are more confident in their academic performance, and they are better able to get along with their families. In short, our mentors are making a difference, a real impact in the lives of the youngsters they serve.

The children are our future, but to quote another well-known adage about the harvest being plentiful but the laborers are few. There are still far too many of our young people who lack the support and the tools to succeed in school and in life. Despite the best efforts of the many men and women who serve as mentors and the agencies that support them, much more can be accomplished with the help of more dedicated volunteers. It only takes one caring mentor to shape a child’s future.

Wisdom is More Than Accumulated Information A wise person is a well-informed individual. Yet, the mere accumulation of information does not necessarily constitute wisdom. You may go to school for many years and learn all kinds of important and legitimate facts; you may devour important books and benefit from what you find in them. But wisdom is acquired differently and it entails other factors!

Throughout my years I’ve encountered several persons who had an impressive academic baggage, but by observing their life and the decisions they often made, it was most obvious that

they were devoid of true wisdom!

By the same token, I’ve also met quite a few people who had no academic credentials; some had not even finished elementary school. Nevertheless, in their dealings, in their demeanor, and by the results of many of their transactions, they demonstrated what wisdom entails.

Ultimately, wisdom is the preferred path one should follow, the most important possession for one to acquire.

It is reached through careful thinking, followed by sound choices led by that process. It entails gains as well as losses, additions but also subtractions!

One cannot accept whatever is said or written without first analyzing those ideas through a pre-established grid.

Wisdom is reached by intelligent comparisons and contrasts; it demands solid discernment between a variety of options; it can never be attained without a prior understanding of the potential consequences of every action taken!

Wisdom needs not to be limited to a small segment of the human race.

It is available to any person regardless of age, anyone who seeks it diligently throughout life, and is eager to incorporate it in all the decision-making pro-

cesses, and in every aspect of one’s daily living, in things great or small!

The Author of Life is also the Giver of Wisdom which He does not deny to anyone who diligently seeks it from Him. It enables its practitioner to view life more realistically and to arrive at conclusions never before imagined. Rotary Club of Boca Raton Making Ready for Future Stars on April 3rd The Rotary Club of Boca Raton is thrilled to welcome Grammy award winning flutist Nestor Torres for a special cameo performance at the 2022 Future Stars Performing Arts Competition on April 3rd at Mizner Park Amphitheater.

Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Nestor Torres moved to New York City, where he pursued Classical flute studies at Mannes School of Music, Jazz at Berklee College of Music and Classical and Jazz at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

During that time he also learned to improvise in the ‘Charanga’ Cuban Dance Music genre, which helped shape and develop Torres’ unique melodic and danceable style. This rhythmic and mellifluous sound evolution remains apart in a class by itself with 4 Latin Grammy nominations, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award. In addition to 18 solo recordings, Torres’ unique collaborations with diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Paquito d’Rivera, Herbie Hancock, Arturo Sandoval and Tito Puente; as well as performances with the Cleveland, Singapore, and New World Symphony Orchestras among many others, are testament to his remarkable versatility and artistry.

es for Torres; the Latin Grammy Nominated – “Jazz Flute Traditions”, a spectacular tribute to his jazz flute mentors and influences, and “del Caribe, soy!”, a collection of classical compositions by Latin American composers, including the great Puerto Rican icon Rafael Hernandez, alongside contemporary works written for Torres by Tania Leon and Miguel del Aguila.

This relentless exploration of musical possibilities without boundaries led to a recent concerto commission by Mariano Morales for a world premiere with Torres and The Lynn Philharmonic. In May 2021 Torres recorded his much-awaited second classical album.

The album was produced under the direction of the highly recognized and multi-Grammy winning Russian/Polish (Uruguayan born) classical composer and conductor Jose Serebrier. In January 2022 Torres released his most recent smooth jazz single, “Thank You Willie” with an album to follow in early fall of 2022. In addition to his achievements in the studio and on the stage, Torres is also the recipient of many awards, including two honorary doctorate degrees from Barry University and Carlos Albizu University, for his commitment to youth, education and cultural exchanges.

What Is Holding You Back?

Occasionally someone will call to talk with me about struggles in their business that puzzle them. They have a good product, possess skills needed for their business, and feel called to what they are doing, but cannot seem to prosper. They are managing to survive but have found themselves unable to thrive.

Because I have been there in my own business experience, I can point them in a direction that might feel uncomfortable, like looking in the mirror. Many businesses have the necessary ingredients for success, but something continues to hold them back.

Sometimes it is fear, reluctance to take calculated risks necessary for further growth and development. Other times it is a lack of selfconfidence, or listening to the echoes of discouraging, even demeaning words they have heard in the past.

Negative self-talk can be a formidable foe in trying to build a business. However, I think it would be safe to say that every person who has ever achieved success – whether as an inventor, innovator, visionary, or leader in any sphere – has had to overcome both fear and memories of past failures.

We have the classic examples of the Wright brothers, often ridiculed for their idea that it would be possible for humans to fly, and Thomas Edison, whose success inventing the incandescent bulb came only after failing hundreds of times. If they had listened to their detractors, or lost confidence because of past failures, they would have stopped dead in their tracks.

Just as trying to drive a car by staring in the rearview mirror, continually looking backward in life can severely affect our ability to move forward. Jesus Christ was speaking to

some of His followers about the importance of single-minded commitment to following Him. He said, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). It is hard to keep to a straight path if we are constantly looking to see what is behind us.

So, how can we turn what we know to be a good product, along with the skills we possess and our passion for what we are doing, into success? I think another passage from the Bible gives us the answer. Romans 12:2 offers this prescription, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

The world around us is very eager to tell us that we cannot succeed, that what we are trying to do is foolish and doomed to failure.

We might carry with us memories dating back to our childhood, memories of harsh, meanspirited declarations that convinced us that our hopes and dreams would always be unattainable, forever beyond our reach.

Don’t wallow in your past. We need to dispose of such mental “garbage.” And the best way for doing this is to ask God to help in renewing your mind, enabling you instead to line up with how He sees your potential. Focus on what He says about you and what He desires to do, both in you and for you.

Writing about many adversities he had to overcome, the apostle Paul stated, “I can do everything through [Christ] who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). He also wrote, “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). If you believe the Lord has called you to a particular enterprise or cause, trust Him to provide what you need to succeed

Delray’s Achievement Centers for Children & Families to Hold Golf Tournament on Palm Beach Achievement Centers for Children & Families (ACCF) will hold its 3rd Annual Swing to Achieve Golf Tournament at the world-renowned Palm Beach Par 3 Golf Course, 2345 S Ocean Blvd, Palm Beach, from 9am to 1pm, on Saturday, April 2nd 2022.

Boynton Beach Hosts U.S. Coast Guard Concert On April 9 Saturday, April 9, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., the City of Boynton Beach will host the U.S. Coast Guard Band at Centennial Park and Amphitheater located at 120 E. Ocean Avenue in Downtown Boynton. This event is part of the U.S. Coast Guards “Southern Connections” concert tour, a two-week mission traveling through Coast Guard Sectors Charlest o n , Ja ck sonville, Miami, and St. Petersburg.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Is Your Sleep Apnea Under Control?

Boca Raton Regional Hospital Breaks Ground for Gloria Drummond Patient Tower Boca Raton Regional Hospital (BRRH) officially broke ground today for the new Gloria Drummond Patient Tower, the facility that is the cornerstone for the hospital’s campus transformation and the $250 million Keeping the Promise capital campaign.

At the center of the day’s celebratory event was Elaine J. Wold and the Bay Branch Foundation who made a $25 million gift to Keeping the Promise and named the tower in memory of Boca Regional’s founder, Gloria Drummond, her close and life-long friend.

“I believe we all have a responsibility to improve the level of health care in our area, to forge new directions, and bring new medicine to our families here,” said Mrs. Wold.

“It is also important to remember and honor our origins, which is really the foundation of everything this hospital has become. Gloria Drummond’s name is synonymous with Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Her legacy and spirit remain deeply ingrained in everything we do and whatever future we create.”

Boca Helping Hands Expands Hunger Relief Services in Lake Worth and Offers Financial Assistance for Residents in Crisis Boca Helping Hands (BHH) recently expanded its food distribution schedule in Lake Worth as part of the organization’s hunger relief efforts in Palm Beach County.

For the first time, BHH is now serving weekly hot prepared to-go meals to the Lake Worth community on Friday evening from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm at Proclaim Church (2116 Lantana Rd, Lake Worth, FL 33462). This initiative is an extension of the organization’s sixday-a-week Hot Meal Program at its main facility in East Boca. This program is open to anyone and no identification is required.

This service is being added due to the growing need within the community for hunger relief assistance. According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the area north of Lantana Road and east of I-95, only a half-mile from the Lake Worth distribution

site, is considered to be low income. This means the poverty rate is 20% or greater, or the median family income is less than or equal to 80% of the statewide median family income.

Since the expansion began on Feb. 25, 572 to-go meals have been distributed to families in need in Lake Worth.

After seeing the need in the community first hand, the Rev. Dr. Andrew D. Hagen, a BHH board member who previously served as the church’s pastor, offered the church’s facilities as an expansion site for the organization’s Hot Meal Program.

With the help of a grant from his family’s foundation, the initiative was implemented last month.

“When the idea of adding a Hot Meal Program was offered to us, we were enthusiastic about continuing to assist hardworking families and financially challenged

seniors,” Hagen said.

Proclaim Church also serves as one of five distribution locations for the organization’s Pantry Bag Program. In addition to Lake Worth, qualifying Palm Beach County residents living at or below the poverty level are eligible to receive pantry bags of groceries in East Boca Raton, West Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, and Delray Beach, including non-perishable staples such as rice, pasta, beans, fresh seasonal produce, and protein. Distribution at Proclaim Church in Lake Worth occurs on Saturdays from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm and averages about 575 pantry bags distributed per month. Registration is completed in person during a client’s first visit.

“We have been able to expand the footprint of our hunger relief efforts largely through the support of our partners in the faith community, who have made their facilities available to us,” said Greg Hazle, Boca Helping Hands’ Executive Director. “Our partnership with Proclaim Church has been a critical factor in successfully serving the greater Lake Worth community since June 2020.”

Junior League of Boca Raton’s “Little Black Dress Initiative” The Junior League of Boca Raton’s third annual Little Black Dress Initiative raised funds, while also raising awareness of the challenges faced by underserved women and children. FAU Team Places First at Florida Food Future Hackathon Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science students recently competed in Florida Food Future Hackathon as part of Florida Food Waste Prevention Week.

Waste Derived Activated Carbon Initiative won the “Best Overall Idea” award led

by Ryan Thomas and Mitch Guirard, along with Sophia Bird from the Florida Institute of Technology.

The project explains how food waste has organic molecules which can be broken down and turned into activated carbon which has the propensity to adsorb toxins from various mediums.

“I am very proud of this group of FAU environmental engineering students,” said

Dan Meeroff, Ph.D., interim dean of undergraduate studies in FAU’s Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering. “They took the initiative to recognize that their graduate thesis research could be used to help solve a common everyday challenge like what to do with food waste. They created an elegant solution that turns the waste into a beneficial product that can then be used to improve air quality.”

Lox Groves campus hosts STEAM Day as part of new partnership Palm Beach State College’s Loxahatchee Groves campus hosted its inaugural STEAM Day as part of a new partnership with Loxahatchee Groves Elementary School to increase community engagement.

“This partnership is a great extension of the College’s long-standing collaboration with the Palm Beach County School District,” said Kimberly Lancaster, dean of the Loxahatchee Groves campus. “It will not only help the elementary school meet some of its STEAM goals, but it also helps expand awareness of the Lox Groves campus and our programs. It is a winwin, especially for students.”

The professional development day drew more than 50 of the elementary school’s instructors and others who took part in different STEAM activities led by PBSC faculty from the Loxahatchee Groves and Belle Glade campuses.

The activities, led by professors Gregory Maxwell, Jeanne Murcia, Dr. Vetaley Stashenko and Candace Walker, included demonstrations on a Anatomage Table, a augmented reality platform called Magic Leap and on a Syndaver, a synthetic human cadaver. Instructors also explored the Virtual Anatomy Laboratory using zSpace ® 3D technology and learned STEAM lessons designed for elementary school children that they could apply to their classrooms.

“The engaging professional development

on this day allowed our teachers to expand their toolbox of STEAM activities to help our students deepen their knowledge across curriculums,” said Juliana Bradley, assistant principal at Loxahatchee Groves Elementary School. “With state testing around the corner, our students are feeling the pressure. By collaborating with one another with the various STEAM learning opportunities, they will be able to push their students’ critical thinking skills while taking a break from the pressures of preparing for the test.”

Also in attendance was Loxahatchee Groves Elementary School Principal Richard Myerson, Instructional Superintendent of The School District of Palm Beach County Vivian Green, West Lake Education Committee member Marcia Andrews, and Mary McNicholas, the liaison for the town of Loxahatchee Groves government.

“Teaching is hard, especially now. It doesn’t matter if it’s pre-k or college, that’s one thing we can all bond over,” said Walker, an associate professor who teaches science on the Belle Glade and Loxahatchee Groves campuses. “To have opportunities to pour encouragement into each other, spark creativity, and remember why we fell in love with teaching in the first place is priceless.”

FAU Among“U.S. News & World Report” The Cleveland Orchestra Returns Best Graduate Programs in 2023 to Florida Several Florida Atlantic University graduate programs are included in the latest U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Programs” for 2023. Each year, U.S. News’ ranks professional school programs in business, education, engineering, law, medicine and nursing, including specialties in each area. The Best Graduate Schools rankings in these areas are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students.

The data for the rankings in all six disciplines came from statistical surveys of more than 2,150 programs and from reputation surveys sent to more than 23,200 academics and professionals, conducted in fall 2021 and early 2022.

Among the FAU programs listed in the 2023 “Best Graduate Programs” are overall education at No. 138 (up from No. 163 in 2022); part-time MBA at No. 92 (up from No. 115 in 2022); computer engineering at No. 103 (up from No. 122 in 2022); electrical engineering at No. 151 (up from No. 155 in 2022); nursing master’s at No. 54 (up from No. 56 in 2022); and overall public affairs at No. 81 (up from No. 83 in 2022); social work at No. 79; biology at No. 203; and computer science at No. 146.

“These rankings reaffirm the exceptional quality of Florida Atlantic’s graduate and pro-

fessional programs,” said FAU Provost Bret Danilowicz. “We are proud that the faculty and students have earned this recognition.”

The Schmidt College of Medicine’s programs are designed to bring the highest quality care to the surrounding community including underserved populations. As such, the college has been ranked No. 61 for “Most Graduates Practicing in Medically Underserved Areas;” No. 105 for “Most Graduates Practicing in Primary Care Fields;” and No. 85 for “Most Graduates Practicing in Rural Areas.”

To gather the peer assessment data, U.S. News asked deans, program directors and senior faculty to judge the academic quality of programs in their field on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). To assess academic reputation in business, education, engineering, law, nursing and medicine, U.S. News also surveyed professionals who hire or work with new graduates. In the summer of 2021, the schools supplied U.S. News with the names of those to be surveyed for peer assessment in the fall of 2021 and early 2022.

The Cleveland Orchestra announces details of the 16th year of its Miami residency in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. Spanning three weeks during the 2022-23 season, it includes concerts at the Arsht Center on January 20 and 21, and January 27 and 28, 2023 with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and performances on November 4 and 5, 2022 with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. The residency also includes education initiatives and community programming for Miami-Dade County School students.

All concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center take place at the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. The Adrienne Arsht Center has been the presenting partner of the Orchestra’s Miami concerts since the annual residency began in 2007. Details of the Arsht Center performances and programs are included below.

Franz Welser-Möst will lead four performances at the Arsht Center over two weekends in January 2023. The first weekend’s program features symphonic masterworks Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished”) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pathétique”). The second weekend’s concerts feature Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto with Lisa Batiashvili, Respighi’s Roman Festivals, and the Miami premiere of Bernd Richard Deutsch’s Intensity (which was co-commissioned by The Cleveland Orchestra).

Michael Tilson Thomas will lead performances at the Arsht Center on November 4 and 5 featuring New World Symphony Fellows performing with the Orchestra. The program will include Varèse’s Arcana, Debussy’s Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra with George Li, and Ravel’s Suite No. 2 from Daphnis and Chloé.

The Cleveland Orchestra and New World Symphony (America’s Orchestra Academy based in Miami Beach), will begin with the 2022-23 season a partnership that includes sideby-side concerts at the Arsht Center (November 4 and 5), chamber music performances, collaboration on digital content, as well as professional development and mentoring activities. The New World Symphony and The Cleveland Orchestra have had a long and productive partnership. In addition to the nine New World Symphony alumni who are current members of The Cleveland Orchestra, musicians of The Cleveland Orchestra are prominent in New World Symphony’s coaching roster each year, and the connection between the two institutions is stronger than ever. This collaboration aspires to create a meaningful and substantial impact for the Miami community and the larger orchestral field.

Hall of Famer Joan Joyce Has Passed Away

With great sadness, Florida Atlantic University Athletics announces the passing of FAU head softball coach, former head women’s golf coach and multiple Hall of Fame member Joan Joyce at the age of 81.

“This is a terribly sad loss for the FAU family. Joan was a true sports legend, and we are grateful for the 28 years she spent here, modeling the best in personal and professional behavior for our studentathletes,” said FAU President John Kelly.

“Joan’s legacy will live on at the university and across the country through the generations of young women she inspired to play – and excel at – softball and golf.”

Joyce was a part of sports from the age of eight until her recent passing. She was in her 28th season as FAU’s head coach and is the only coach the program has known. Her tenure as head women’s golf coach for the Owls spanned 18 years (1996-2014).

“We are very saddened to learn of Coach Joyce’s passing,” said FAU Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White. “Joan was one of the pillars that FAU Athletics was built upon. She was a legend in many ways and leaves a legacy at FAU and beyond that is unmatched. We

are forever grateful for her nearly three decades of service to FAU and her studentathletes.”

While at FAU, Joyce amassed a 1002674-1 record as head softball coach. She guided FAU to 11 conference championships, 11 NCAA postseason tournaments and was recognized as conference Coach of the Year eight times.

Among her numerous accomplishments, including 20 hall of fame inductions, All-America recognitions in multiple sports, and inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records, Joyce’s ability to relate and teach the sports she loved is her greatest impact. Perhaps one of her most recognizable moments was striking out Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams in front of 17,000 people.

Joan Joyce (August 18, 1940 – March 26, 2022) is survived by: sister Janis Joyce; brother Joseph Joyce and his wife Virginia (Ginny); nieces Bridget Joyce Wright and her husband Russ, and Meghan Joyce Bolesta and her husband Michael; as well as three grand-nieces, Morgan, Brooke and Teagan, and two grand-nephews in Joseph and Patrick.

Women’s Tennis Downed By Tars

The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis team suffered an SSC loss 6-1 against the Rollins Tars on Monday. The Sailfish fell to 6-8 on the season.

In doubles competition, the ‘Fish took 2/3 matches to go up 1-0. Courtney Page and Verena Weindl dropped their match 6-1. Elvira Edstrom and Anabelle Robichaud defeated Maria McKay and Kaitlynn Groves 6-3. Alessia Passerini and Jasmine Williams picked up their seventh doubles victory of the season 6-4 over Eve Wasil

and Erin Yaroshuk.

In singles action, Passerini suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat. Robichaud dropped her match 6-4, 6-1. Edstrom lost 6-4, 6-3. PBA freshman Cecilia Peroni (6-1) suffered her first singles loss of the season 6-4, 6-3.

Weindl dropped her match 6-4 in consecutive sets. Frida Alsterhem fell in three sets 6-2, 6-7, 10-8.

Up next, the Sailfish will travel to Fort Lauderdale for an SSC game against No. 1 Nova Southeastern on Thursday, Mar. 31.

Owls Head to Orlando for Midweek Meeting with UCF The Florida Atlantic University baseball team (16-9) will travel to Orlando on Tuesday night for a showdown with the UCF Knights. The Owls are coming off a series win over UTSA over the weekend and will be looking for their third straight victory.

The Owls recovered from a Friday night loss against UTSA to win the next two matchups and take the series. On Saturday, Armando Albert and Steven Loden combined to go 7-for8 at the plate with eight RBI in a 128 victory. The offense came up big again on Sunday with four home runs. Dylan Goldstein finished 3-for-4 with one of those home runs and four RBI. Jacob Josey came out of the bullpen and tossed six innings with just one run allowed as the Owls claimed an 8-4 win.

UCF is 14-10 and coming off an 11-1 win over Samford on Sunday. The Knights had lost three straight prior to Sunday. They have wins over then-No. 2 Ole Miss as well as Miami.

Panthers Win 2nd Straight Palm Beach State Baseball earns a big win over Indian River State College on Monday, breaking a 7-7 tie late to win 8-7.

After Indian River scored in the top of the 1st, PBSC roared back with 5 of their own. With two outs, a walk, hit-by-pitch, and an infield single loaded the bases for Albert Espinosa. Espinosa was then hit by the pitch, tying the game 1-1. Next batter, Skyler Schulz, doubled; that scored 2 on the play. Caden Marsters then walked to load the bases yet again. Nick Fusco, starting at second base, singled on a line drive to left field to score 2 more PBSC runs.

The bats were not done yet. After a Tristan Moore groundout to lead off the bottom of the 2nd, Sean Arnal tripled to right field and then scored on a wild pitch.

After a scoreless bottom of the 6th and top of the 7th, PBSC was able to scrape together another run, which was all that they needed. Gavin Bogdanchik and Albert Espinosa singled with 1 out, putting runners at 1st and 3rd. On the third pitch of the at bat, Skyler Schulz doubled on a line drive to center field, putting PBSC up 8-7.

Hunter Youngblood would allow one single the rest of the way en route to his 2nd win on the season.

The Knights are led offensively by redshirt junior Gephry Pena with a .330 average. Tom Josten (19 RBI) and Alex Freeland (18 RBI) are the other primary run producers.

William Saxton is expected to start on the mound but may be limited after going 5.2 innings against Samford on Friday. He allowed four hits and one run in his third start of the season.

Bobcats Down Sailfish Palm Beach Atlantic’s baseball team took on the #11 ranked NAIA team St. Thomas University earlier this evening. The Sailfish had a tough time generating offense in the game, losing 14-3.

PBA started out the game with a bang in the first inning. Jiovel Lantigua slammed a solo home run with two outs to score the first run of the game. The Bobcats would respond in the bottom half, scoring four runs off of a couple of singles and a Sailfish error.

The Sailfish would get their final run of the game off of a solo home run from Dylan Tosto. PBA had a rough go of things in this game, totaling only five hits on the game and never seemed to get anything going in the later innings.

The ‘Fish have a quick turnaround as they travel back down to Miami to take on SSC opponent Barry on Apr. 1.
