Concours d’Elegance Raises Millions for Chairty Millions of dollars was raised for charity this past weekend as the seventh annual Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance, which featured an exciting lineup of activities. The charity event, geared toward the luxury automobile market, was presented by Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation and Mercedes Benz USA as a benefit for the Boys & Girls
Club of Broward County. Comedic icon Bob Newhart was the headliner at a Gala Dinner Saturday. On display were more than 200 exotic, classic automobiles and motorcycles. The event generated $3 million for the non-profit one year.

A Birthday to Remember Lynn University continues the celebration of its 50th anniversary year; a year that turned out to be one of the most eventful to date as it was kicked off with a history making event, the third and final presidential debate on its campus. Lynn has come a long way from its start as an all-women’s college in 1962, issuing two-year degrees with only four buildings amid the bean fields of Boca Raton to an internationally renowned university. “We may be only 50 years young,” Lynn President Kevin M. Ross said,” but we have had a rich history and we have a promising future.” With three names along the way – Marymount College (1962), College of Boca Raton (l974) and Lynn University (1991) – Lynn has continued to grow, vastly expanding its campus and improving its profile. Lynn’s archivist, Kathleen Clunan, has seen the changes firsthand. She
was one of the nuns who was library director when Lynn first opened its doors as Marymount College. “I feel so honored to be at Lynn for this length of time. Just to watch it evolve from a small twoyear college for women into this splendid university has truly been a blessing,” Clunan said. “To watch new buildings go up and see how the campus has matured so beautifully is unbelievable. And with all this expansion and growth it has never lost it’s warm, family feeling.”

Tying a Lot of Knots By Fred Hamilton While hundreds of people filed into the South County Courthouse to answer to their traffic infractions or address other legal matters, in a quiet room in the Self Services Center, Fausto Vladimir Florentino and Cindy Antonia Camacho started the first day of their married lives on Valentine’s Day. “I thought I was going to be a wreck but surprisingly not, I don’t have any regrets,” Florentino, 31, said. “If you would have asked me a year ago, ‘Am I going to be nervous when I get married?’ I would have said, ‘Oh, sure. I’m going to be sweating bullets.’ But I know she is the one, I’m sure and I’m actually calmer than I’ve been a in a long time.” The Florentinos of Boca Raton were among 38 couples – 11 in Delray Beach - who said their vows to one another at one of the four courthouses, a popular Valentine’s Day destination for people desiring to tie the knot. The clerk performed a group wedding for another 31 lovebirds at the National Croquet Center in what’s become a tradition for the county clerk’s office. The marriage court sees an average of 7.5 couples on an average day, spokeswoman Kathy Burstein said, but days such as Valentine’s and sequential dates (as Dec.12, 2012) tend to be popular. About 7,500 brides got hitched in America – a 1,446 percent increase from the less significant 12/12/11, according to a survey conducted by US-based David’s Bridal. “We see a pretty sizeable increase on special occasions,” Burstein said. “Last Valentine’s Day, we had 38 couples married in the courthouse and in 2011, we had 47 ceremonies that day.”

Burstein said there has been more interest in group weddings. “We just had an email from someone wanting to know how they can sign up for next year and we even haven’t gotten over this year yet,” she said. A courthouse wedding cost 93.50 and couples can save $32.50 by taking a premarital course. The Florentinos are planning a bigger wedding next year, but getting married before that celebration takes some of the pressure off a single day, Florentino said. The pair met in a video store four years ago in Lynn, Mass. Florentino, who had relocated from New York with his company, saw her in an aisle, mustered the courage and approached her. “It gets even better because I gave him pointers on the movie and tips to watch, and I said nice talking to you, Cindy, 32, said, “Then I went to the other side of the store.” But Florentino grabbed another movie and found her. “What do you think of this one? Is it good?” she recalled him asking. “And I said, ‘Yes, it was good, I saw it.’” Again she walked to the other side to see if he really wanted her opinions or in fact, her. “So the third time, I knew that he really wanted to talk to me,” said Cindy, who does quality control for a Lake Worth firm. He would tap on the drums at his church after service on Sundays and at home, he often improvised - whether on the table or on whatever he found. So much was his love for drums that his dad bought him a drum set. “My baby enjoyed music. He loved to sing, play the drums, the piano, and the guitar,” Montre Bennett shared with me recently. “He was very active at school and he loved to make people happy.” So it was only appropriate that Mr. Bennett give him a home-going on Saturday befitting of an aspiring drummajor. – with a drum line -. Master Malachi was tragically struck and killed last week as he rushed into the street to greet his father. Upon learning that, I reached out to my contacts and called a few musicians who once played in bands. Some said they were too rusty or too old to walk from the church to the cemetery but offered to help me search for participants. Delray Beach Police assistant Chief Jeffrey Goldman said they would be happy to provide officers as traffic escorts. But it was Village Academy’s principal Guarn Sims and Ms. Shirley Bryant from the Achievement Center for Children who saved the day. Just when I thought we were about to strike out in finding a drum corps, Mr. Sims said although his band was in the infancy stage, some members would participate. “We would love to be a part of this,” Ms. Bryant said. “Let me make some calls … our kids would love to do this.” I am not surprised by the level of support from the residents of Delray Beach. I am however moved by their

compassion. The last time I say anything like this was some 12 years ago at a Jazz funeral in New Orleans. Jazz funerals are traditional funerals with music. They typically begin with a march of family, friends and a brass band. The music is normally somber at the beginning of the march and once the ending is near and friends say their final goodbyes, the music becomes more upbeat. While Saturday may not rise to the level of a Jazz funeral, I am sure Malachi would be proud of his final procession from this earthly life. Thanks to Samaritans like Ms. Bryant, Mr. Sims and Chief Goldman, Saturday’s will be as Mr. Bennett wanted: a celebration of Malachi’s life, not a time of mourning. Kudos to four budding actors who did a stellar performance in a Black History Month play at Mt. Olive Baptist Church recently. Their acting skills and passion spoke volumes about their commitment to the craft and discipline. The directors Christine “LeShay” Ferguson, who also wrote the play, “What you Don’t Know, Won’t Hurt You,” and Fredrina Combs also deserve special recognition. Congrats on a job well done. Letters to the Editor Gun control Column poses the wrong questions Dear Editor, I have considered for some time submitting a letter concerning gun rights but the uninformed questions in your Feb. 15 column pushed me to act. Yes there is a discrepancy in regulations, mainly attributed to “right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” (please read complete 2nd Amendment) but also concerning the example given. People do harm in automobiles and sometimes those privileges are revoked by a court but does that mean these people don’t then drive illegally causing harm again, sometimes to the result of death? Dear Editor, Trying to impose gun control regulations being discussed in Washington or elsewhere at this time deals more with people who legally own or buy them and are a line of defense against those who would do harm with stolen or otherwise illegally possessed arms. The fact is that there are evil people who don’t care what laws are on the books and they are going to find weapons to harm or kill innocent people. I am always suspect of a government who wants to diminish my right to protect myself and if you look at countries that have imposed gun confiscation or strict regulations on ownership, crime has increased exponentially. How Good Are you at Worrying? By: Robert J. Tamasy One of the great wonders of the workplace is the variety of talents and abilities we observe. Some people are natural leaders, others find it easier to follow and support those who lead. Some are especially gifted in administration, directing and delegating tasks, while others are adept at personally handling a multitude of details. Some have natural skills at sales and marketing – they could sell ice to polar bears in northern Canada. Others are talented speakers, while some do their best communicating through writing. But if there is one “skill” most of us possess in equal measure, it is the capacity for worrying. If we own a business or hold top executive responsibilities, we worry about matters ranging from how to plan for future uncertainties to how to meet next week’s payroll. We worry about deadlines, job promotions, finding a new job, or whether we will receive well-deserved (we believe) pay increases. If our business relies on a small
number of key clients, we worry about losing them. We worry about how to find new customers. We worry about our competition making changes that could have a detrimental impact on our business. We worry about the weather; the local, national and world economy; the costs of fuel; or how to keep pace with ever-changing technology and market trends. We are so accomplished at worrying that we even worry when there is absolutely nothing to worry about. We start worrying that soon there will be something to worry about. Maybe this helps us to feel we will be better prepared for when (and if) it happens. One of the reasons we worry is because it makes us feel like we are doing something when there is nothing else we can do. We feel good to be concerned about a situation – even if we are helpless to do anything about it. But what does worrying accomplish? Experts say at least 90% of the things that worry us never occur, so we have wasted considerable mental and emotional energy on nothing.
Including myself among those that find it easy to worry, I find it comforting and reassuring to regularly remind myself what the Bible has to say about worry: Instead of worrying, pray. Worrying deprives us of sleep, saps our energy, and disrupts all sense of inner peace. What if you could simply transfer those concerns to someone else with the unshakable assurance that they will be properly addressed? “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Let God do the worrying. Have you ever tried to lift something heavy and felt relief when someone stronger than you volunteered to carry the weight? That is exactly what God offers to do for us when we commit our worries to Him. “Cast all your anxiety on him (God) because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
God wants to carry the burden. Has anyone ever told you, “Do not worry. I have it under control”? This is exactly what God is telling us. We worry about things outside of our control, or things that probably will not happen. God tells us, “Relax. I will take care of it. Take a load off yourself.” Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Until next week! Robert J. Plan to Excel! Don’t look at things as they are and be satisfied. Rather, face them as they can become and do your part to bring that into reality! The same also applies to persons with whom you interact. Who they are now should not be viewed with any finality! They need your encouragement to become all they can be, to excel in all their pursuits, to maximize all their current doings! I once read of an artist that set up a studio on the first floor of a downtown building of some city. One of the first things he noticed, as he looked out of his window, was a disheveled town vagabond who daily sat on the street across from his studio, as a beggar. The artist used
that man as his first painting project. He actually drew him not as he then looked but as he, the artist, imagined him to be. Upon its completion, he invited the man in, and showed him what he had produced. Not knowing who the subject was, the homeless man inquired of the artist, and was most surprised when told that it was he, himself. His significant reaction was, “If that’s the man you see, that’s the person I’ll be!” Much that is given to us is not for immediate, personal consumption; most is provided for us to improve: sometimes, for the betterment of the tool or of the situation. Most often, however, it is for our own, personal betterment.
Making excellence your personal goal already empowers you to go after what will bring it to pass! Thus, be a greater critic of yourself rather than of others. Realize the areas where you can improve and proceed to take the necessary steps to make it so. You need to try and keep on trying whatever will enable you to be who you can be, and do what you are capable of doing! The very idea that you can accomplish it must become an inward belief and attitude with tangible efforts and visible outcomes, even if it may take time to complete, besides some barriers to overcome. As Samuel Johnson declared in his day, “the business of life is to go
forward.” Preparation for life is a daily, moment by moment activity. New challenges come all the time and we need to know how best to respond to them! As Rich de Vos recommends, “You never will discover how far you can go if you don’t start ‘doing it’.” You can confidently leave the results up to God as long as you faithfully do your part! Ultimately, it is only in the path of obedience that you will understand where you are to go, and to go next! The right doors will open for you when you find yourself in the road God designed for you to traverse under His leading and personal care!

March-Culture Jesus Loves Delray Beach That almost sounds like a bumper sticker. I am not really a bumper sticker fan, but recently I have been seeing more of the I Love Delray Beach stickers on the back of cars around town. Doubtful that Jesus would roll with a bumper sticker, but I do believe with all my heart that he is totally in love with Delray Beach. The gospel writer Matthew writes it better than any bumper sticker ever could express…Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people” (Matt. 9:35).
This is important especially for those who follow Jesus as their Redeemer, because it means we too get to love the city of Delray Beach. It means that it actually becomes an act of worship to God when we seek the welfare of the city, as he told his people to do in Jeremiah 29:7. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. Is that not awesome or what? Translation for those who live in Delray Beach… serve the city, enjoy the city, shop in the city, use your talents in the city, eat in the city, coach in the Simple, Jesus loves the city city, mentor in the city, volunteer because that is where the people in the city, learn the city, create art live…and Jesus is very much in in the city, play music in the city, love with people. Of course not act in the city, dialogue in the city, everyone lives in a city, please heal in the city, break generational do not worry… Jesus loves the curses in the city, feed the poor in suburbs and outskirts too. By natural law, created by God, there is percentage of new boy babies born in the United States each year who will be homosexual. Their natural and god-given homosexuality should under no circumstances in the United States of America be considered untrustworthy, or dis-loyal, or un-helpful, or un-friendly, or discourteous, or un-kind, or disobedient, or un-cheerful, or notthrifty, or un-brave, or un-clean, or un-reverent. Their natural condition should not be the basis for any discrimination, for any reason, by any organization or religion or any government or part of government in the United States. The time has come for all people or all races, faiths, and gender to throw away the chains of prejudice that have bound us away from one another because of our ancestors, ancient or recent were afraid of the “others”, whoever they might be at any time in our occasionally benighted history.
As a Boy Scout in my youth, Troop 37 of York, Pennsylvania, I earned my Eagle Rank without a thought of any of my friends who might have been turned away for any racial or gender issue. As an adult, observing the organization’s narrow minded, last bastion attitude, I passed over opportunities to contribute or otherwise support the Scouts, although I had learned so much by my scouting experience. I was happy to see that the organizations was about to change its ways. But then I read that its leaders had forgotten many of the tenants in “Scout Law” by trumpeting to us all that their retreat from prejudice was but a Kabuki dance. Those in scouting who wanted to remain prejudiced and unenlightened would be allowed to retain their discrimination in the proposed “new” order. Having put one toe in the Rubicon I suggest to the national leadership of the Boy Scouts of America pull out the stops, admit that the time had long since come to ban any and all discrimination among all boys and men associated with Scouting.

“West of Memphis” a Backwoods Horror Story of Injustice
“West of Memphis,” directed by Amy J. Berg and produced by Peter Jackson and Damien Echols, is a deeply disturbing documentary film at many levels. If you ever fancied yourself an outsider or a bit of a rebel in high school, you will be especially chilled by this miscarriage of justice. West Memphis is a poor suburb of Memphis, Tennessee, across the river in Arkansas. On June 4, 1993 a triple murder rocked the small town of Blytheville, Arkansas. Three 8-yearold boys were viciously murdered and mutilated. Circumstantial evidence pointed to three high school boys: Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Miskelly. Damien was portrayed as ringleader of the gang. The fact he had a “death book” and Satanic symbols and skulls and bones in his art work did not help his cause. The film goes into gruesome detail as to how the boys were murdered: hogtied, mutilated in horrific ways

and thrown into a drainage ditch. This was a time when conservative Southerners were getting whipped into a frenzy over Satanic cults and blood rituals. All three of the accused were “bottom of the barrel poor white trash.” Jessie Misskelley was doing poorly in school and came from a troubled home. Jason Baldwin was borderline retarded. The eightwoman, four-man jury found the boys guilty of murder in 1994. Damien was sentenced to death as the alleged leader. “I know he’s guilty,” said one of the jurors grimly after the trial. Jessie and Jason got life in prison. The first ray of hope for the boys came in 1996 when crusading filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinovsky aired the first of three HBO documentaries: “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills.” It wasn’t hard for the filmmakers to find contradictory and downright false testimony and evidence. I won’t
go into the gory details, but there was a reason the dead boys were so mutilated, but it had nothing to do with Satan, or even humans for that matter. As the years dragged on the imprisoned “West Memphis 3” gained supporters. A very intelligent and dedicated San Francisco lawyer named Lorri Davis began a correspondence with Damien in prison. In 1999 the couple married in prison and Lori dedicated the rest of her life to clearing the name of her husband and the other two “conspirators.” An even bigger boost came when New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh became interested in the cause. The couple had plenty of resources from Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films, but even more important was their righteous indignation and their clout

in the film community. American rock musician and poet Henry Rollins took up the Memphis Three as a personal cause. He was later joined by celebrities like Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith, Natalie Maines and others. Soon top legal experts joined the fight, pro bono. The more they learned, the weaker the state’s case looked. But all is not fair in the legal system; particularly in the rural South. This documentary is quite long- nearly three hours- and it is damning in its proof of misconduct, false witness, superstition, innuendo and hypocritical piety. You may shake your head in disbelief as to what ultimately happened to the West Memphis 3. It is beyond outrageous and a travesty of all that the US legal system is supposed to stand for. Regardless of how you feel about the case, these three young men lost nearly 20 years of their lives. Nothing can bring that back, but worse: the real killer has not been brought to justice. Benny Bee Once upon a time in a bee’s nest, a bee named Benny was practicing hauling honey. (I don’t know if you know this, but the honey haul is a very popular sport for bees.) As you can probably see, the honey haul is Benny’s favorite sport. He loved it very much. It was his favorite thing to do with his free time. He dreamt of becoming a honey haul champion! He practiced and practiced and practiced all day long. “Man, oh man do I love honey hauling,” Benny said to himself. “I hope I can become honey haul champion some day! I wonder what it would be like if I was champion,” said Benny quietly. “Hmmmm. It would be pretty cool. Everyone would love me! My name in shining lights! Benny Bee! That would be awesome!” he said. “I can’t wait! I better keep practicing though if I want to become champion. Here I go!” 45 minutes later “What time is it?” he asked himself. “Oh, wow. It’s 3:00. I started at 2:15 so I practiced for 45 minutes! Wow! I better get back to the donut shop!” he said to himself as he ran out the door to go to the donut shop. (The donut shop owned by Jerry Bee is where he works. He had to be back by 3:05.) “Oh no! I’m not going to make it in time!” he said to himself as he flew through the giant nest in a hurry, bumping into other bees. “There’s the donut shop! I can make it if I go super extra, turbo, fast! Come on, wings, don’t fail me now.” Boom! He broke the sound barrier going that fast! In a split second he was at the donut shop with 30 seconds to spare! “Wow, huff, I can’t believe, huff, I made it, huuuuufff,” he panted, as he flew into the donut shop. “Hey, you’re late!” said Jerry Bee. “No, I’m not. I have 30 seconds left, see?” Benny said. “Rah,” groaned Jerry. “You’ve got a customer,” said Jerry. “Get your apron on, and serve him!” yelled Jerry. “Ok, ok. I’m on it,” said Benny. He got his apron on and took the customer’s order. “Hello, what would you like this fine afternoon?” asked Benny. “Oh, I’ll have a honey glazed donut with a cup of coffee,” said the customer. “Oh, a number 5. Good choice,” said Benny. “That’ll be $2.28 please.” “Here you go,” said the customer. “And here’s a tip.” “Oh, thank you. Come again,” Benny added. Just then, Benny saw a flier for honey haul auditions. It said this: “Do you love to play honey haul? Do you want to become the next champion? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then come on down to Honey Stadium in Honey Central! Audition to be a honey haul star!” “Wow, I wish I could go there, but it’s in Honey Central on a Tuesday and March 1, through March 7, 2013
I have to work. Plus, I can’t afford to go that far,” he said sadly. “Wait a second, I can afford it! Today’s paycheck plus some leftover money from previous paychecks and all the money I’ve earned from tips! That nice man gave me just enough to be able to afford it! Wait another second. I would still have to get off work. Aw. Hey, um, boss, could I maybe get off on Tuesday?” said Benny. “Huh? It’s a holiday. National St. Bee’s Day,” said Jerry. “Oh, right. Heh. Sorry,” said Benny. “Just get back to work,” said Jerry. 6 days later (because it was Wednesday when he saw the flier) “I can’t believe today’s the day I go off to Honey Central! 6 days went by so quick!” he said to himself. “Taxi!” he cries out. A taxi cab pulls up, Benny gets in it, and he’s off to Honey Central! 3 and a half hours later “Wow, Honey Central. It’s amazing,” Benny says as soon as he arrives. “I can’t wait for the auditions!” 30 minutes later “Yay! Audition time!” he said. He arrived and auditioned. He thought it went pretty well. He was just waiting for the results. He got bad news. He didn’t go through. He went home very depressed. He was sad for 2 days straight, at home and at work. He didn’t even practice honey haul. One day a letter came in the mail that said it was a mistake, and that he was actually the best player that auditioned. They mistook his name Benny Bee for someone else who auditioned; Penny Bee. She wasn’t that good. He thanked God for the results being a mistake, and succeeding in his goal, and perhaps maybe even becoming the honey haul champion someday, and eventually he did. 3 years later “…And now your new honey haul champion, Benny Bee!” “Well, it took me 3 years to get here, but I did it. Thank you, Lord!” “The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know thy name put their trust in thee, for thou, O Lord, has not forsaken those who seek thee.” (Psa. 9:9-10 ESV) Never be depressed if something doesn’t work out right, even if it isn’t a misunderstanding like Benny Bee’s mishap. Open for a year or so, this bistro is still trying to become a wellrounded, well run establishment. Service is spotty at best, as is the food. We started with a taste of the soup of the day, a lobster bisque – creamy, hot and tasty then the Caesar salad consisting of greens and a few croutons; cheese shavings and a discernible Caesar dressing were absent – we then sampled the outsourced dressing and found it just ok – no credit to Caesar. The house salad – Insalata di Angelo was a nice dish in contrast, another salad.. Insalata di Eugenio… is also on the menu. Appetizers included a smooth and mild eggplant pate, a small crab cake with only faint crab taste but adorned with a nice corn relish it badly needed. Clams casino were small and very breaded, the clams in brodo had a gentle taste in their white wine sauce. Happy to say the bacon wrap scallops (3 in number) were served over polenta and were delicious. There are nine pasta dished listed covering a wide variety or types with various accompaniments – we elected to test the pastas with our entrees. Under the meat-poultry heading, we chose a too-well breaded veal parmigiana with nice sautéed spinach. We then sampled a very fine
osso buco on a bed of saffron risotto – quite delicious, but quite a tiny meat portion. As for fish – the Diver scallops were perfectly prepared with sun dried tomato and basil over tasty linguini. A portion of pan- seared salmon with apricot and roasted poblano was a nice portion of excellent fish. We note 16 additional listings as meat…poultry and 4 additional listings under the fish category. There are 4 sides available – sautéed spinach, mushroom sautée, broccoli rabe and roasted beets. Note; not all are necessarily available at one’s sitting. Chef has his choice of making 2 special desserts each evening – they may or may not include panna cotta, lemoncello cake, chocolate fudge cake, tiramisu(this creamy and wonderful). New Traffic Patterns on Palmetto Pk. Rd. in effect on March 5th On Palmetto Park Rd., just west of Boca Raton Blvd. a traffic sign states, “New Traffic Patterns, Starts 3/5”. It has been placed to inform citizens from 9:00PM-6:00AM the west bound lanes will be closed. For 2 or 3 nights FPL trucks will occupy the closed west bound lane between 4th and 5th Avenues, according to Mike Woika, Assistant City Manager. Woika said, “Driver’s safety was important in scheduling the times FPL will be working on the electric poles aligning the street. The eastbound lanes will serve as both east and west directions during the westbound lane closure.” Similar modifications were done in the same area on the east side of Palmetto Park Rd. 2 weeks ago, but no lane closures were necessary. “Since the lane changes are set late at night we do not expect there to be problems with traffic, but the sign informs citizens and residents to be aware of the change,” said Woika. John Reilly, a transportation analyst for Boca Raton said, “FPL will be removing and replacing electric poles in compliance with a federal organization the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.” Woika said that the changes to the poles are not a city requirement but one that is implemented by FPL. Next Tuesday, FPL will work through the nights to update the electric poles to their functioning capacity.

Boca Raton Names 2012 Firefighter of the Year Firefighter James Haag has been selected as our 2012 Firefighter of the Year. James Haag has been a Firefighter with the City of Boca Raton for eight years. In his short time on the Department, he has accomplished the following: • In his first year on the job, James became a State Certified Hazardous Materials Technician and has become an intricate part of our Hazardous Material Team. He took this to the next level as an instructor and has helped teach several classes training other Hazardous Material Technicians. • James joined our Advanced Life Support (ALS) Competition Team and has been competing for seven years around the country at his own expense, taking home multiple awards. In October his team placed 1st at the Flagler County EMS Competition. In June they took 2nd place at the Randy Boaz Competition in Miami, and in November, his team took 3rd place at the Temple Terrace Competition. • James assisted with the creation and running of Boca Raton Fire Rescue’s own annual ALS competition, which is going on its 7th year. • James has also participated on the Department’s Combat Challenge Team.
• In 2011, James took over the responsibility of running the Department’s annual Sweet Heart Ball at Banyan Place. This is a community outreach program held once a year for the senior citizens near the Valentine Day holiday. • Following the 2010 Boca Helping Hands structure fire, James was recognized by the Florida State Fire Marshal for finding and preserving blood stains on window blinds, which ended up being a key piece of evidence needed to solve the arson case. • Last year, James was recognized by the Palm Beach County EMS Providers Association as the “Paramedic of the Year” for all of Palm Beach County. The basis of that award was his actions at an especially challenging vehicle crash on I-95 with occupants trapped and extrication needed. For all these reasons we congratulate Firefighter James Haag as our 2012 Firefighter of the Year. FAU Baseball Hits Its Way Past No. 23 FGCU Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team tallied 12 hits in a 9-8 victory over No. 23 Florida Gulf Coast University. Senior Hugh Adams became FAU’s all-time career saves leader. The Owls scored two in the bottom of the first. Nathan Pittman led-off the game with a single. Levi Meyer followed with a hit and run to put runners on first and second. Pittman would steal third before Tyler Rocklein drew a walk. Senior catcher Mike Spano, 2-for-4 with two RBI, then dropped a hit into center to put the Owls up 2-0. FGCU grabbed one in the third and four in the fifth by capitalizing on an FAU error, three hits and two walks to take a 5-3 lead. The Owls would return the favor in the bottom of the sixth with five two-out runs. Corey Keller led-off the sixth with a single. Rocklein then reached first on an error by the FGCU third baseman. With two outs, Mitch Morales hit a double down the right field line to score Keller. Two more were added via a double to left by Sean Murrell. Nathan Pittman, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases on the night, drove in the fifth run of the inning. FAU would hold the Eagles scoreless through the next two frames while adding a run in the seventh and eighth. Keller lead-off

Strikers Preseason Schedule Highlighted by College Visits The Fort Lauderdale Strikers have scheduled no fewer than five preseason matches against local colleges and universities in South Florida. The Strikers are capitalizing on the wealth of soccer talent at these schools in order to prepare for their home opener against FC Edmonton on Saturday, April 6 at historic Lockhart Stadium. “Our home opener is just around the corner and we’re excited to be able to play against many of our local colleges and other good competition as we prepare for Edmonton,” said head coach Daryl Shore. Several of the trips will be homecomings of sorts for players on the Strikers team who played their college careers here in South Florida. Darnell King’s time at Florida Atlantic University is remembered fondly by the Strikers’ defender. “I spent some time training with them during the offseason, so it will be good to go back and give them some professional experience,” said King about the players at FAU. The Strikers will also be making the trip to Barry University, the alma mater of Strikers’ midfielder Mark
Anderson who player four seasons with the Buccaneers. “Going back to the place I played four years, and obviously had a lot of success, will be nice to play against some of my friends and old coaches,” said Anderson. “I’m really looking forward to that one and it will probably be the highlight of my preseason.” In addition to FAU and Barry, the Strikers preseason trips will also include visits to Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University and the Copa Latina AllStars.
