7th Festival of the Arts Boca March 7-16 at Mizner Park By Skip Sheffield The venerated New Orleans institution of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band kicks off the seventh annual Festival of the Arts Boca with a theme of “Bourbon Street Meets Boca” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at Mizner Park Amphitheater. This year’s Festival is a potpourri of classical and popular music, physical prowess of the Peking Acrobats, the acoustic thunder of Kodo taiko drummers and worldclass literary figures. This is by no means a stuffy festival. The “house band” this year is the very fine Boca Raton Symphonia under the baton of symphony and opera conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos. This is also the Symphonia’s seventh anniversary season. If you have ever been to New Orleans you may have visited Preservation Hall in the French Quartet. Formed in the early 1960s, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is the touring arm featuring star players from Preservation Hall. Think of it as the Harlem Globetrotters of Dixieland Jazz. The group has recorded nearly two-dozen albums since its first in 1964. In 2006, the band, which plays about 150 gigs a year, was awarded the National Medal of Arts recognition. The authentically Japanese taiko drumming corps Kodo performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8 as part of its One Earth Tour. Journalist and novelist David Ignatius is the first of the literary guest at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, speaking on “Foreign Affairs: How to Fix the World” at the Schmidt Family Cultural Arts Center at the south end of Mizner Park At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the

Award-winning writer Patricia Engel speaks on “A Writers Life” at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10 at the Cultural Arts Center, while over at the Amphitheater the agile Peking Acrobats perform gravity-defying feats at 7 p.m. Sunday. Thomas Kennally, the honored writer of “Schindler’s Ark,” which was the basis of the Film “Schindler’s List,” will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, March 11 at the Cultural Arts Center. The film will have a free 1:30 p.m. screening on a first-come, firstserved basis. Gen. George W. Casey, Jr., US Army (ret.) will speak on “A Soldier’s View of International Security at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 at the Cultural Arts Center. Harvard professor and “Justice” author Michel Sandel will address “What Do We Owe One Another as Citizens?” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Cultural Arts Center. Internet sensation organist Cameron Carpenter will be guest soloist with the Boca Symphonia at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mizner Park Amphitheater. The beautiful Russian-born pianist Valentine Lisitsa will be back for a second Festival Boca appearance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 15. And the Beat Goes on At 2, Prince Malachi enjoyed playing drums. He would tap on the drums at his church after service on Sundays and at home, he often improvised - whether on the table or on whatever he found. So much was his love for drums that his dad bought him a drum set. “My baby enjoyed music. He loved to sing, play the drums, the piano, and the guitar,” Montre Bennett shared with me recently. “He was very active at school and he loved to make people happy.” So it was only appropriate that Mr. Bennett give him a home-going on Saturday befitting of an aspiring drummajor. Master Malachi was fatally struck last week as he rushed into the street to greet his father. Upon learning that, I reached out to my contacts and called a few musicians who once played in bands. Some said they were too rusty or too old to walk from the church to the cemetery, some seven blocks away, but offered to help me search for available participants. Longtime musician Clifford German brought his horn and blew along the way. Delray Beach Police Assistant Chief Jeffrey Goldman said they would be happy to help with traffic control. But it was Ms. Shirley Bryant from the Achievement Centers for Children & Families who saved the day. Just when I thought we were about to strike out in finding a drum corps, Ms. Bryant provided my lifeline. “We would love to be a part of this,” she said over the telephone. “Let me make some calls and get back to you. Our kids would love to do this.” The center recently formed a drum line

and the students are so eager to showcase their mettle. (Let me also add that they are in need of equipment, so any help would be much appreciated). I am not surprised by the level of support from the residents of Delray Beach. I am however moved by their compassion. The last time I saw anything like this was some 12 years ago at a Jazz funeral in New Orleans. Jazz funerals are traditional funerals with music. They typically begin with a march of family, friends and a brass band. The music is normally somber at the beginning of the march and once the ending is near and friends say their final goodbyes, the music becomes more upbeat. As the drum line marched from the church on SW 10th Avenue to the Delray Beach Memorial Gardens motorists stopped and residents watched and waved from their front yards. Never has there been a time in the history of the city that a drum corps ushered someone to the cemetery. Another memorable moment was when instead of using the automatic belt to lower the Prince’s coffin, two graveyard workers climbed in the vault, cradled the white 4-foot casket and laid it in its final resting place. While Saturday’s service may not rise to the level of a Jazz funeral, I am sure Malachi would be proud of his final procession from this earthly life. Thanks to Samaritans Ms. Bryant and Chief Goldman, Saturday’s service was as Mr. Bennett wanted: a celebration of Malachi’s life, not a time of mourning.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Disappointments Are Part of Life! Each human life should operate according to a sound plan that helps produce good results. Every individual can experience a purposeful life if plans are in place for the hoped-for outcomes. The good one desires and expects never comes by the mere wish one intensely manifests! Even then, plans also fail, however good and solid they may be! What was expected to bring certain advantages can sometimes produce the very opposite. Obviously, no one ever plans a disappointment as something they
eagerly anticipate; people actually avoid such experiences as much as they can. Yet, by what is done or not done ahead of time, frustrations come, disappointments often emerge, becoming an unwelcome reality to be confronted and dealt with in the best possible fashion! The fact that disappointments always occur in a person’s earthly trajectory should not give anyone the excuse for inaction with respect to them. Some may be avoided ahead of time, while all can be dealt with creatively once they invade one’s human
experience. A mere acceptance of the inevitable unpleasantness is no sign of strength but of weakness, since obstacles most often can be overcome. There are resources which God makes available and which human intelligence can utilize! Someone has wisely stated that much that life sometimes forces on us as an unpleasant surprise, is there either to change us for the better, or for us to change it with carefully secured means to overcome the undesirable situation we encounter. Nothing should
be allowed to paralyze us in our trajectory toward something better in life! Every challenge demands a corresponding action! Some problems may arise due to our own poor choices, while others affect us adversely on account of somebody else’s human error, or evil intent. In any case, we should not focus on the barriers represented by any disappointing experiences, but lift our gaze above and beyond them where new paths open up for our continued adventure!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Seven Secrets of Success
Interim Distribution
There are many ways of defining success: status, power, promotions, money, and many other things. But one important measure of success is impact – the influence individuals have on people surrounding them, whether in the workplace, the community, or their own homes. What difference has their life had on others? Looking historically, as well as spiritually, few people have made as much of an impact with their lives as the apostle Paul, whose life and writings are presented in the Bible’s New Testament. By the end of his life, Paul had been instrumental in spreading the Christian faith across the entire Roman Empire, despite traveling mostly on foot. Imagine what he might have accomplished if he he’d had a jet, a cellular phone, and a fax machine! Even though many of us devote our lives to pursuits in the business and professional world, I believe the life of Paul offers many lessons that we could apply to our own lives. Here are keys to his successful life: SENSE OF DIRECTION: To achieve success, it is important to know where you are going – what your goals and objectives are. “I run straight toward the goal in order to win the prize...” (Philippians 3:14). UNDERSTANDING: We need to be able to deal with unexpected circumstances and rise above adversity. “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation” (Philippians 4:12). COMMITMENT: Once we embark on an important enterprise, success requires willingness to persevere in the face of difficulties and challenges. “I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me” (Acts 20:24). COMPASSION:
Just
as
the
apostle Paul remained sensitive to the needs of people around him, we also must strive to protect the best interests of those working with us. “I may have all knowledge...and the faith to move mountains...but if I don’t have love, it does me no good” (1 Corinthians 13:2-3). ENTHUSIASTIC FAITH: Successful leaders believe strongly in their mission, and their enthusiasm is contagious. “I have the strength for all things through Christ who empowers me. I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses inner strength into me” (Philippians 4:13). SERVICE TO OTHERS: Selfcentered leaders generally have short tenures. The leader devoted to serving others, helping them reach their goals, is the one that finds eager followers. “I will be glad to spend all I have, and myself as well, in order to help you” (2 Corinthians 12:15). STAYING POWER: The adage reminds us, “It is not how you start, but how you finish.” This certainly was true of Paul. “I am hard-pressed on all sides, but I’m never frustrated; I’m puzzled, but never in despair; I am persecuted, but I’m never deserted by God; I may be knocked down but I’m never knocked out!” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Try building these qualities into your own life and see what happens. © 2011, Purpose Driven Life. All rights reserved. Until recently it was very difficult if not impossible for a circuit court judge to distribute marital property and liabilities before trial. There are reasons to wait for all other issues to be determined before distribution. There is an inherent interrelationship between the distributed property and the income which might be earned through the distributed asset, especially if the asset is intangible, like a brokerage account. On the other hand there always seemed to be special circumstances when a preliminary distribution was a good idea. On rare occasion circuit judge exercised his or her discretion in making an early partial distribution. Florida statute 61.075 has recently been amended to allow a judge to make such an early distribution. A sworn motion must be filed by a party seeking such relief. The motion must point out why such relief was needed by one party or the other, or for the best interest of both, or the court’s best interest. An example might be found when both sides have filed motions for temporary support and both have alleged that the other has control of all assets. In order to obtain this relief particular assets must be
found to be marital without question and of a certain value and origin. It may become necessary to equally divide and distribute marital property early if there is no other source of funds to support the family’s daily needs, or the need for both sides to retain counsel. If either the husband or wife had clearly used self help immediately before the case was filed, leaving the other without the ability to hire counsel a distribution, equal to the removed asset might be in order. Once a motion has been filed by either side an evidentiary hearing must be held by the judge who will hear evidence backing up the allegations set out in the verified motion, and a defense responding to the arguments of the motion. Scheduling such a hearing depends on the judge’s schedule or docket. Under local rules it is unlikely that such a mater should be set on an emergency basis, but may be considered urgent by the judge. The ability of a judge to make such an early distribution might help the parties and the court avoid a string of more costly hearings and provides the judge with an additional tool.

A Finely-Tuned “Looped” at Parker Playhouse
By Skip Sheffield Playwright Matthew Lombardo has evidently been amplifying and fine-tuning his play “Looped,” continuing through March 3 at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale. A beaming Lombardo was on hand in the lobby opening night. I had met him in the play’s initial run in 2008, when it played at the Cuillo Center in West Palm Beach. I also met the star, Valerie Harper, who originated the role and played the larger-thanlife stage and screen actress Tallulah Bankhead. Due to health issues, Harper was unable to reprise her role for a second shot at Broadway. Harper’s good friend Stephanie Powers was tapped to take over as Tallulah. Take over she most definitely has. “Looped” is funnier and more affecting t h e second t i m e around. Though Harper poured her heart and soul into the role of a once-major star in decline, Powers may be better suited for the role. Physically she looks more like a stage and movie star, and in
Boca Life & Arts
reality she is probably better-known and more popular than Valerie Harper. Whatever the reason, Powers in short order has nailed the role. Her timing is impeccable, and though she stumbled a few times verbally, her confidence and sense of entitlement were unwavering. “Looped” is inspired by an actual looping or re-dubbing session for Bankhead’s last film, “Die! Die! My Darling.” It was a potboiler British horror film, with Bankhead as a religious zealot and Stephanie Powers- yes that Stephanie Powersas a young woman who becomes her target for vengeance. What should have been a 10-minute exercise in the summer of 1965 turned into a daylong endurance test for film editor Danny Miller (Brian Hutchison) and a sound technician known only as Steve (Matthew Longo). Bankhead sets the mood by being three hours late before making her very theatrical entrance in a mink coat and dark glasses. Bankhead procrastinates and mocks the two men, making unreasonable demands, which they meekly fulfill. A major demand is for booze, as Bankhead
cheerfully proclaims she is an alcoholic, and coke-head too. Bankhead is boastful of her sexuality and promiscuity with either sex. You don’t have to be a psychiatrist to know Bankhead’s outrageous personae is a mask for inner pain. Businesslike Danny has his inner turmoil as well, which is explored in detail in Act Two by Brian Hutchison, who originated the role. It is this soul-searching that elevates “Looped” above mere clever oneliner comedy. “Looped” didn’t do very well in its initial 2010 run on Broadway, closing after only 52 performances. My hunch is that the time is right for this finely-tuned revival. Catch it while you can. Tickets are $28-$66.50. Call 954462-0222. The Boca Raton resident, a 14-year-old freshman at Pinecrest School, has just released her first nationally-distributed single. It is a song she co-wrote called “Butterfly.” She visited Nashville and Los Angeles recently, all while maintaining a freshman’s full academic work load. Writings country and popflavored songs is nothing new for Lizzy. She’s been making up tunes on piano and guitar since she was a little girl. What’s different about “Butterfly” is that it is getting national radio airplay. “I’ve broken into the Top 50 on the Music Row charts,” she says proudly. “I’m number 49. We are going to Los Angeles to make more contacts there with industry peoplenot just radio but all kinds of music industry people.” Lizzie was in Los Angeles Feb. 6-13 and she returned to Nashville Feb. 14-20. On Feb. 23 she will perform for the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida at the Coral Springs Mall. “We” is Lizzie, her father Don and mother Carole. They have worked tirelessly promoting Lizzie’s musical career since she began performing professionally at age 9.
March 8, through March 14, 2013
“We are a team,” acknowledges Don Sider, a Boca Raton attorney. “We have been working for this for years. Now we really have something to promote.” “Butterfly” was cowritten with record producer Jamie O’Neal and recorded in Nashville. Lizzie has her own web site: www. LizzySider.com. Thirteen songs have been written for her first full album, to be recorded in 2013. A new single is due in the spring. All this, and school work too. “My teachers have been very good about my career,” allows Lizzy. “They let me make up work when I miss classes. I got four As and a B
this semester. It’s like working two jobs. I try my best at both of them.” “We have all been working hard as a team,” says Carole Sider. “We take it as a challenge. We are like a (record) label. That’s why the industry is taking Lizzie seriously. It has taken two years of going to Nashville to get this far.” For Lizzie Sider it goes beyond music. “I don’t want to be just a singer,” she says. “I want to be someone who does good for the world. I want to be a role model; someone they can look up to.” To this end Lizzie has become an advocate of empowerment with the Global Women’s Empowerment Network, a nonprofit organization that uses cuttingedge technology and multimedia programming to raise awareness and funs to support and heal woman and children who have suffered abuse of all

Does DESIGN MATTER? Boca Raton has become a world wide recognizable brand. We have seen our city in the spotlight recently with Dr. Kevin Ross and Lynn University’s esteemed leadership hosting the last presidential debate. Over 130 million people were exposed to BOCA RATON. Our City never shined brighter. We had “Morning Joe” televising several mornings in Mizner Park’s Rack’s Restaurant. The Allianz Golf Tournament is now a premier golf event. We now have Florida Atlantic University’s School of Medicine and Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Match all of that with an exceptionally managed government and we have created a very special community. By now it can be discerned that I am passionate about Deisgn and proving why it MATTERS in general, but most importantly in our Downtown. I grew up in this town. My family moved here in 1959 when Boca Raton was a sleepy ocean side community. The City has continually evolved with a design driven purpose. Much has changed since then, but to really understand how much and more specifically, why it changed, we must look further back in time when Boca Raton was being planned and developed. In 1925, Addison Mizner had a vision for Boca Raton to “CREATE the world’s most a r c h i t e c t u r a l ly b e a u t i f u l playground with miles of paved and landscaped streets, golf courses, polo fields, elegant shopping vias, and luxurious mansions for the crème de la crème of world society.” I think it is reasonable to believe that his vision has been realized. Although his Development Real Estate venture struggled and ultimately failed. His architectural legacy built a solid foundation for planning, architectural March 8, through March 14, 2013
design and place making has made a permanent impact on our city. “Mizneresqe
Architecture”
is
patterned after Boca Raton’s first Architect and his unique regional architectural style. Now architectural critics can easily identify the historical precedents Addison used in his creations. It can further be argued that most architecture is either precedent driven(copies a style, order or composition of existing architecture) or an interpretation of existing architecture, thereby creating a reinvention of the existing style. Other than uniquely iconic architecture like Frank Gehry or Renzo Piano, most architecture strongly references the past. So what is Mizner Architecture and Why Does It Matter in our downtown?
Douglas A. Mummaw
many, many others. They have created many of the remarkable architecture we all enjoy. They are experts in interpreting Mizner Architecture and then reinventing it with their own distinguished designs. The Boca Resort, Old Town Hall, Addison Mizner Cottages in Old Floresta and of course The Addison(His o r i g i n a l administr ation Building and Apartment) on the corner of Camino and Dixie highway are very recognizable buildings that exemplify the architecture style of Addison Mizner. Low sloping barrel tile roofs, continuous colonnades enclosing deep loggias and walkways. Broken roof lines with towers, chimneys, and other habitable rooms stretch along the blue sky in concert with the neighboring buildings.
Stone detailing, pecky cypress wood and hand framed out-lookers beneath the roofs. Mizner incorporated Renaissance architecture using symmetry, Palladian arches, gothic architectural styles and strong compositional balance. His designs also include hand painted glazed ceramic tiles and ornamental iron work. The “Mizneresque” architectural style is beautiful and its importance to Boca Raton is irrefutable. The Mummaw Studio is working on a project soon to be realized in the downtown which I have conceptualized as “Eredita”, which means legacy in Italian. It specifically refers to not only the legacy of Addison Mizner, but also the legacy of Renaissance Architecture. Friends, DESIGN MATTERS and it certainly matters in our Downtown. I look forward to seeing the surge in Multi-Family Residential Projects currently underway come to fruition and continue the Downtown’s inevitable maturation as Addison Mizner envisioned almost 100 years ago.......

Boca Realtor Goldberg Arrested for Making Child Porn Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Michael B. Steinbach, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Miami Field Office, announced yesterday that Gary Goldberg, 49, of Palm Beach County, was charged with production of child pornography in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2251. A Pre-trial detention hearing is scheduled for Goldberg today at 10:00 a.m. The complaint charges Goldberg with production of child pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 2251. If convicted, Goldberg faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of fifteen years and a maximum term of imprisonment of up to thirty years. According to the complaint, Goldberg entered into a relationship with a 17 year old girl and her 15 year old friend. Goldberg allegedly performed oral sex on the 15 year old girl in the bathroom at the BP station at Glades Road while the 17 year old waited in the car outside. Goldberg paid the minors to allow him to take nude and sexually explicit
photographs of them. Goldberg allegedly photographed the girls with a tablet. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www. projectsafechildhood.gov. Mr. Ferrer commended the investigative efforts of the FBI, Boca Raton Police Department, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and the South Florida Minor Vice Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lothrop Morris. An indictment is only an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The two victims told officers they live in the area and after running an errand at the FedEx on North Federal Highway, they walked to 2300 N. Dixie Highway. The victims were talking while sitting on a bench in front of the closed business. After about 15 minutes, they heard footsteps and saw two males walking from the south side of the building. Man Seen in Backyard Arrested for Burglary Boca Raton, FL – On Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at about 11:15 a.m., members of the Boca Raton Police Department’s Tactical Team responded to a report of an unknown person in the backyard of a home at 81 SW 15th Court. The resident called police and said they saw a male looking in the windows of their home, then saw him leave in a green Chevrolet. Members of the Tactical Team responded to the area and saw the green Chevy. As officers followed the car they saw it pull into the driveway of another home and a male, later identified as Stepfon Ross, get out of the car and walk up to the house. Several minutes later Ross got back into the car and drove away. The officer observed a traffic violation and stopped the driver. When officers questioned Ross he gave several different stories about why he was in Boca Raton, where he had been and what he was doing there. Ross eventually told officers he had come to Boca Raton to burglarize homes, but got scared off
before he could accomplish the task. The resident at 81 SW 15th Court identified Ross as the person who was in his backyard, looking in the windows. When officers searched Ross they found a window punch concealed in his shoe. Officers arrested Ross and charged him with attempted burglary to a residence, loitering and prowling and possession of burglary tools.

The suspect did not show any weapon and after receiving the cash, walked out the front door of the bank. No vehicle was seen. The suspect is described as a white male, 40 to 50 years old, 5’6” tall to 5’10’ tall, stocky build, short brown hair with a receding hairline,
wearing a navy and green zipfront jacket, khaki pants and white sneakers. No one was injured. If anyone has information about this crime, they are asked to call Detective Ron Mello at (561) 6206186 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.
Tactical Team arrests two burglars Boca Raton, FL – On Tuesday, February 26, at 12:30 p.m., members of the Boca Raton Police Department’s Tactical Team were
patrolling a residential neighborhood near 500 SW 9th Avenue, when they saw a blue Lincoln backed into a driveway. There was a black male sitting in the driver’s seat and another black male walking away from the vehicle through a gate that leads to the back of the house. A brief moment later, the officer saw the same male run from the back of the house and get into the passenger side of the Lincoln. The vehicle headed towards Camino Real with officers following.
Officers witnessed several traffic violations and stopped the car. When officers made contact with the driver, Kelsie Smith, and passenger, Braylin Buncum, they immediately smelled the odor of marijuana wafting out from the car’s interior. Officers searched Buncum and found a large screwdriver in his pants pocket. When officers searched the car, they found a backpack belonging to Smith which contained a driver’s license and credit card belonging to a 94 year old man. They also found a small bag of marijuana in the gas cap area, as well as loose marijuana scattered on the floorboards. When officers questioned Smith and Buncum, they gave conflicting stories about why they were in Boca Raton and what they were doing. Smith also gave conflicting stories about how he came to be in possession of the other driver’s license and credit card. Officers arrested Smith and Buncum and charged both with attempted burglary to a dwelling, loitering and prowling, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia. Smith was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and unauthorized possession of a credit card. Buncum was also charged with possession of burglary tools.

Delray Marketplace, a new Dining, Entertainment Destination By CRA News Service As several local malls dodder into old age, gap-toothed with vacancies, the newly opened Delray Marketplace is gearing up to be the premiere dining, entertainment and shopping destination in South Palm Beach County. Retailers and mall officials are preparing for the March 23 grand opening, which will include family oriented entertainment, kid-friendly activities, strolling entertainment, tenant samplings, and live music in the new 200- guest amphitheater. Until then, the Marketplace is offering a variety of live weekly entertainment as additional retailers continue to open. “We’re looking forward to the official grand opening celebration,” said Amy Ferguson, general manager of Delray Marketplace.
“The community has been very patient during construction, so we’re excited to be able to show our appreciation and celebrate the long-awaited opening of Delray Marketplace.” Anchored by a 258,000-squarefoot Publix Supermarket, which opened on Jan. 17, and Frank Theatres IMAX CineBowl & Grille, which opened to the public on Feb. xx, the new development is on the corner of West Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road, just west of Florida’s Turnpike. “We are very happy and welcome it,” said Robert Schulbaum, president of the Alliance of Delray Residential Associations, which represents about 120,000 residents. “I think it’s going to be a central location for us. We had nothing.” The Kite Realty Group development will include the
nation’s first Polaroid Fotobar, a 2,000-square-foot store with work stations where people can transfer their images, edit them and see how the photos will look on framed canvas, on heavy-strength aluminum, as posters or in other styles. Other retailers include Chicos, White House | Black Market, JoS. A. Bank, Charming Charlie, Apricot Lane, Burt & Max’s Grille, Republic of Couture (ROC), Xtend Barre, Bella Amici Pizzeria, It’Sugar, Japango, Orange Leaf, Terra Fiamma, The Grind Coffee and The Olive Tap. “Delray Marketplace is one of our premier properties and we’re very pleased with the design, amenities and retail variety the project offers Delray Beach and the surrounding communities,” said Tom McGowan, president and chief operating officer of the Indianapolis- based Kite
Realty Group. “The property brings much-needed dining, entertainment and shopping options to the area and we’re excited to officially open the center.” Kite Realty Group Trust is a full-service, vertically integrated real estate investment company, which acquires, builds, redevelops and develops neighborhood and community shopping centers in selected markets in the United States. Founded in 1968, the company also owns, operates, manages and leases parking garages, dining and entertainment properties. As of Dec. 31, 2012, the company owned interests in 60 operating and redevelopment properties totaling approximately 9.3 million square feet and three properties currently under development totaling 0.5 million square feet.

‘C’mon, Get Happy.” U.S. Economic Recovery Could Come in 2013 A famous song that’s been around for decades urges people to “Forget your troubles, c’mon, get happy.” It’s particularly telling that songwriters Ted Koehler and Harold Arlen penned this optimistic, pull-yourselves-upby-your-bootstraps melody back in the Depression Era – a time not unlike what we have endured for the past half-dozen years. Also, there’s a famous saying that notes: “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” A number of economists are looking past the dark days of fiscal cliffs and the uncertain Sequestration at better times in the future – perhaps as soon as later this year. Often, people with small, medium and large businesses can set an example for the entire nation by becoming responsible for their own financial “houses” in hopes that state and federal officials will follow suit. The Sequestration is an example of how federal spending can be cut, but it is not a very good example. It appears government officials will slice the fiscal pie in such a way that financial reductions will hurt people – children, seniors and the American public in general, who face a reduction in airport security officers and longer waiting lines. The full impact of the Business News
Sequestration, officials say, has not yet been felt. But most Americans have survived it with little impact. Both Republicans and Democrats – who couldn’t agree on a way to stop the Sequestration -- should learn from American businesses that there are right ways and wrong ways to cut budgets. Reducing spending responsibly is something the federal government has yet to grasp. But look what local businesses are doing. When a firm’s customer base drops off, it has to trim its budget responsibly to continue operating. Businesses don’t have the power to print money or raise taxes. And increased taxes have never been shown to pump needed revenue into government coffers. In a nutshell, the American public sees the Sequestration as a means of cutting federal spending while politicians are trying to toss it in their faces by trimming money in inappropriate ways. Businesses could not exist if they adopted the philosophy of arbitrary cutbacks. That said, let’s look at the good things that are happening in this nation, and let’s put aside—at least for the moment – some of the bad things that seem to dominate the news. The U.S. economy stands a good chance of improving this year, some
officials say. Growth, which has stalled at an average of 2.2 percent since 2010, needs a bump up 4 or 5 percent which, in America, shouldn’t be too much to ask. There’s hope in the housing market, according to the Washington Post. The number of housing units started is up 22 percent from 2011 and up a whopping 58 percent from 2010. And there is reason to think that the upswing will continue. One thing is for certain. If building activity keeps rising, construction companies will need more workers. And this could definitely help a segment of the labor market that has been hit hard. Tourism is an important factor in pumping up the economy throughout the U.S. After years of “stay-cations,” Americans and those in other nations want to see the world. Florida should be a leader in that department with its plethora of theme parks, historic spots and shopping outlets. South Florida offers extensive sunshine and sandy beaches for those looking to do a lot of nothing. Communities and counties are seeing the benefit of locating businesses and restaurants near beaches. Here in South Florida, 65 percent of customers at the Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise visited from Brazil, a country flush with cash and a
www.bocaratontribune.com
population not afraid to spend it. America is also beginning to see the new importance of trade with other nations. For too long, the U.S. was on the short end of the exportimport business. But the reality of strong new markets opened in Asia, Europe and South America – particularly Brazil – are holding out new hope for improvement. The import-export trade also stresses the need for competitive pricing. It is the only way this give-and-take industry can work effectively. Investing in the global economy can give firms access to growth in some stronger overseas markets. Extending hands across the ocean is also a good way to let non-Americans know what a great experience it is to deal with the U.S., the greatest and economically strongest nation on earth. Americans’ household budget sheets are also looking as good as they have in a decade, which means that as 2013 continues, debt overhang no longer appears like a dark cloud on the economy. People are paying off their credit card balances and opting either to use cash or debit cards. It may be a bit too early to start popping the champagne corks. But the signs say we probably won’t need rose-colored glasses any more to see economic good. March 8, through March 14, 2013

Fort Lauderdale Strikers Open Training Camp with Eyes on the Prize With many new faces and only 33 days left before the 2013 NASL Spring Championship Season begin, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers are diligently training as they get ready to host FC Edmonton at Lockhart Stadium April 6. With core players such as Matt Glaeser, Scott Gordon, Mark Anderson, Walter Restrepo and Andy Herron, and with the help of high-profile signings such as David Foley, who played for the Puerto Rico Islanders last season, and former Honduran national team veteran Ivan Guerrero, Fort Lauderdale looks like one of the favorites to win the Spring Championship Title and have their shot at the Soccer Bowl in the fall. With the addition of Foley, Fort Lauderdale looks to have a very strong front line with players like Andy Herron, Walter Restrepo, and Mark Anderson, who combined for 25 goals last season. “I think this is the best front line in the NASL,” said Foley. “This played a big part in me coming to Fort Lauderdale.” “We are very excited that Foley decided to join the Strikers,” said head coach Daryl Shore. “We feel that adding him to our group will make us an exciting team moving forward.” “We are trying to chance the mentality in the locker room,”
said Shore. “A player like Guerrero brings a competitive nature to every training session, and works hard. He’s a veteran and someone who the rest of the defense will listen to.” Also signed during the offseason were Manny Gonzalez and Gonzalo De Mujica. Gonzalez, who spent all of last season training with the team before signing his first professional contract in January, comes to the Strikers after playing in the collegiate level at Florida Gulf Coast University. De Mujica comes to the Strikers from Orlando City U-23. “Being the practice squad last season really helped me when I was signed this season,” said Gonzalez. “Gonzalez is a young attacking player who we feel still has some growing to do when it comes to figuring out how things are done but both have done well so far, and have
earned a spot on our roster” Another big part of the roster is Walter Restrepo, who was lost last season after tearing his ACL in practice. Team doctors gave him a one month timetable for him to be back at 100%. “February 22 doctors told us he would be ready in a month, so by March 22nd he’ll be able to get kicked,” joked Shore. However, Shore understands that
and ACL tear isn’t something to take lightly, “he’s in the final stages of hi ACL rehabilitation,” said the coach. “We don’t want to push him too much, if he’s not 100% April 6, we will use him as a reserve until he’s 100%.” The Fort Lauderdale Strikers open up their pre-season this week versus the Florida International University Panthers, at FIU Stadium. The Strikers will then go on to the Copa Latina, and next week will be in the Florida west coast as they take on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.

Florida Atlantic added another run in the sixth inning as freshman designated hitter Brendon Sanger scored on a single to right field by senior outfielder Nathan Pittman. Junior infielder Robert Buckley and Keller paced the Owls’ offensive attack with three hits each. In the nightcap, FAU scored four runs in the third inning and another six runs in the sixth inning to take command of the game. Senior catcherMike Spano drove in four runs and went 3-for-4. Rocklein had three runs batted in and scored two runs, while freshman outfielder Billy Endris scored three runs and junior outfielder Geoff Jimenez added three runs. The Owls had 13 hits in the victory. The offense made a winner of freshman starting pitcher Seth McGarry, who struck out six batters and allowed one unearned run in three innings. Junior left hander Alex Kojihad five strikeouts in two innings in his season debut. Freshman right hander Kyle Miller and senior right hander Gregg Bennis each tossed single scoreless innings.
