Spanish River High School Senior Christina Philipp Wins Art Competition On Saturday, March 9, 2013, Digital Media Arts College (DMAC) in Boca held their 7th Annual one-day, two-round art competition in which the winner gets a $70,000 scholarship.

Christina Philipp, age 17, a senior at Spanish River High School was the winner. “I’m so overwhelmed with joy that I won. I’ve love art since I was a baby and have always wanted to be an animator,” said Christina.

Dogs, Wine and a Very Good Time

By Skip Sheffield Royal Palm Place is going to the dogs in a good way. On Thursday, March 21 at the Monument Plaza at the intersection of US 1 and S.E. Mizner Boulevard, Boca Raton, PROPEL is hosting its fourth annual Fine Wines & Canines fundraiser.

PROPEL (People Reaching Out to Provide Education and Leadership) was founded by Royal Palm Place owners James and Marta Batmasian as a 501 © non-profit organization to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged and at-risk youth of Palm Beach and Broward Counties.

Fine Wine and Canines was the brainchild of former PROPEL board president Andy Scott. Organizing the particulars of the past two events is board member and doglover Elizabeth Hevert, who chairs the event again this year.

“I guess I have been chairing this by default,” joked Hevert. “It is getting better each year for the vendors, committee and dog people.

It’s such a neat cause and it brings the whole community together.”

“In addition to the Westminster Dog Show judge, we have a celebrity judge too,” Hevert reveals. “Judge Reinhart, who has a home in Florida, has agreed to be our celebrity judge.”

Actor Reinhart is perhaps best remembered for his breakout role in the classic youth comedy, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and in “Beverly Hills Cop” and its sequels.

“I think we’re going to knock it out of the park this year,” declared PROPEL programs director, Drew Gaut. “My wife and I enjoy it every time. It’s just a really fun community event for some really great kids.”

Editor Notes Our readers often comment that there should be more good news in the paper.

While it’s true that there’s more than enough bad news to go around, I recently learned about some cool things that involve our local kids that I’m sure won’t get much airtime or ink.

Rest assured, the Boca Raton Tribune is trying to change that.

I recently attended a benefit for Hailey Kennedy, a 13-year-old local lady, who was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which afflicts approximately 500 children in the United States each year.

She had been losing weight and after a doctor’s visit, she got the news of her malady.

She was rushed to St. Jude’s Children’s’ Hospital in Memphis and recently had to undergo her second bone marrow aspiration.

She also began intensive chemotherapy.

More than 100 supporters attended the evening of Art and music at William Debilzen Art Gallery downtown Delray Beach.

Hailey is a gifted singer at Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach and she wants to someday be a singer. So it was only fitting that Jace Vek, a local accomplished musician, perform at her benefit.

Jay penned a tribute to Hailey and with the utmost professionalism, he performed in style.

Another girl, Emma Sara Blount, learned about Hailey’s condition and wanted to help. She sold friendship bracelets to her friends and on Facebook. And she raised a whopping $200 for the cause. Wow, for an 11-year-old, that’s a lot of work and a lot of money. Kudos to you Emma.

And there was the story of Yaz Jade, the 13-year-old debuted as a song, “Louder than Words” on Thursday as a tribute to her dad, who is hearing impaired.

Yaz will be performing four or five songs this weekend at the Boating and Beach Bash in Boca Raton.

Once a year, right here in Boca Raton, we can find a place where people with many differences can come together.

There is no mocking, there is no pity, there is only respect and acceptance. This Saturday, thousands of people with physical and intellectual challenges - many of whom have served our country and many who are too young to know the hardships of war will find a place where they can be honored.

Honored for their strength, their desire for self-reliance and their presence among us.

It is not easy to grow up in America these days. Some would say it never has been an easy place despite what those outside our nation may think. Our corporate side and many educational institutions instill the sense that "fitting in" is the most highly desired quality a person can possess to have success.

We are taught, often indirectly, that differences are not something to be cherished. That differences detract from the whole.

But wasn't our country founded on our desires to be accepted for our differences?

To praise and to live in a way that was not dictated by any one entity?

All too often disabilities are often looked upon with a taunting eye, particularly in our younger years, during the years when a person's outlook on life -- perhaps through eyes that don't see so well, or in a body that can't maneuver -- is developed.

The Boating and Beach Bash presents an all-too-rare opportunity for members of the community -- and by community I mean people from all over Florida and beyond -to enjoy at least one day of the year to be free. For one day, those who are not able to walk so well, talk so well or even hear music or see a bird fly can feel honored. For these are Very Important People.

We take for granted the gifts that we are given. Our kids play video games and express frustration when they don't have the latest app or newest phone. Frankly, I remember times in my youth when I too would be upset over not having a "cool" car or the hippest clothing.

Anyway, have a great week and until next week, Thumbs up to our kids.

How Are You Investing Your Life?

by Lane Kramer Over the last 20 years I have been around some very successful CEOs from a purely business standpoint.

Some of these people have taken very modest amounts of capital and have grown companies to a considerable size, and then sold them for millions of dollars. Others have been able to employ hundreds of people and lead very large companies. However, I wonder if these tangible business indicators alone mean they have truly been successful in life?

The answer to that, of course, depends on how a person defines success. How do you define success for your life? Do you measure success by how many dollars you earn, how big your company grows, or is it through a more relational approach, such as the quality of your relationships with God, friends and family members? How do you think God would measure success for your life?

For me, the answer to that last

question is determined by whether I am fulfilling my God-given purpose and doing what God wants me to do in my business and my family, as well as my worship community, circle of friends, the marketplace as a whole, and the Dallas, Texas, U.S.A. community where I live.

One way I measure success is through the lens of an investor.

Every day I have to determine where to maximize my investment of time, talents, treasure, relational capital, and physical energy. These are all gifts from God that He has entrusted to me. The investment choices of how and where to deploy them are not always easy, but they are important.

As it says in 1 Corinthians 4:2-5, “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful…. (the Lord) will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.” For example, do I spend more time “after hours” at The CEO

Institute trying to further grow my business, or do I invest that same hour at home having dinner with my wife? Do I spend regular time on Sunday afternoon talking with my elderly mother, or do I devote the time to investment research in the Wall Street Journal? Do I ride my bicycle on Sunday morning, or do I invest that time worshipping at my church and attending Sunday school? Do I participate in a prison ministry event, or do I play in the member-guest tournament at the country club? Decisions, decisions.

They require wisdom from God. All investors try to maximize the return on investment of capital. That is precisely what I am trying to do in my life as a whole. As we are told in the passage from 1 Corinthians 4 and elsewhere in the Bible, I know one day God will review my life and ask for an accounting of how I invested the gifts He gave to me.

So as a steward of those gifts, and not the owner, I have to think about how the Master (the true Owner)

would have me invest what He has entrusted to me.

While we should primarily seek to be a good Steward/ Investor because we love God and want to serve Him, God as our Creator also understands our human nature. He knows we all want to be recognized and rewarded for being good investors. And the Bible makes it clear that God will reward us for our faithfulness in investing/stewarding all His gifts both in this life and in Heaven.

In a future “Monday Manna,” I will present some specific ideas on how we can ensure being good investors of the resources God has entrusted to our care and use. In the meantime, take some time and consider how you are doing in “life investing.”

Approach Without Reproach!

There’s no better ingredient than tact, when seeking contact with other people. The same must be maintained if the new contact is to endure and become mutually edifying.

Best-selling author, Charles Swindoll, reminds his readers that “all of us are drawn to those whose faces invite us in and urge us on.”

Those who approach people with a “yes” face, more than likely will connect with others if a positive posture can be maintained from that moment on! Meeting others needs to be carried on in a calm, sincere way.

From the outset, a person you meet must perceive sincerity in your intentions; the interest you manifest is to be in the individual

rather than in whatever he or she can do for you. As the late Elton Trueblood had proposed, “we must let our lives speak, before our words can be heard!”

It’s far better when you talk less about yourself and more about the discernible, valuable qualities you encounter in this new acquaintance.

If you appear before anybody with a hidden agenda, your tricks will be quickly discovered and you, yourself, may be just as swiftly dismissed from a potential, ongoing relationship of mutual trust.

Once I saw a poster that illustrates these concerns very accurately. It states that, “great people talk about ideas; average people talk about things; small people talk about other people.”

A reality which cannot be denied is that the enthusiasm of some persons in calling attention to other people’s faults will in no way erase or hide the evidence of their own mistakes!

Even if you may be accurate with your fault-finding in somebody else, you are not justified in maintaining that practice since you also are not without blemish. Jesus addressed the human bent on hypocrisy, when he complained in His Sermon on the Mount, “And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3).

Author Jack Kahl comments that “the world revolves around relationships between people, and trust is at the heart of all human

relationships.” Care should be given to develop and retain high quality relationships for mutual benefits.

Be pure in your motivation and sincere in your approach to people.

Be sure that the image you wish to project to others corresponds to good intentions you purpose to bring into the relationship. Be sensitive to the peculiarities of other people!

Remember that several factors which may make you attractive to some may be void of the credibility necessary to establish solidity in your interactions with them and with others. The image you need to build must be fashioned according to solid principles, not the shifting, provisional, artificial standards too common in contemporary society!

How To Be Thankful In Tough Times

Facts About Alimony

What do you do when faced with a situation that seems beyond your control? Perhaps business is not going well, you are facing major financial difficulties, or a personal situation seems to defy resolution.

What do you do – worry about it?

The Bible offers some very interesting insight into this and suggests that instead of worrying, we simply should be thankful: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done” (Philippians 4:6). Let’s take a closer look at this advice: 1. Don’t worry about anything.

Worrying doesn’t change anything.

You could call it “stewing without doing.” There is no such thing as a born worrier; worry is a learned response. You probably learned it from your parents. If not, you learned it from your peers, or you learned it from experience. That is good news – the fact that worry is learned means it can also be unlearned. Jesus says, “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.

Today’s trouble is enough for today” (Matthew 6:34).

2. Pray about everything. Use the time you would spend worrying by praying instead. If you prayed as much as you worried, you would have a whole lot less to worry about.

Some people think God only cares about things such as how many people attend church or how much money we give to religious causes.

But God is interested in everything, even car payments and aching joints.

He is concerned with every detail of your life. That means you can take any problem that you are facing to God. 3. Thank God in all things.

Whenever you pray, you should always pray with thanksgiving.

The healthiest human emotion, psychology experts tell us, is not love, but gratitude. Being thankful actually increases your immunities; it makes you more resistant to stress and less susceptible to illness.

People who are grateful are happy.

But people who are ungrateful are miserable because nothing makes them happy. They are never satisfied; nothing is ever good enough. So if you cultivate the attitude of gratitude, learning to be thankful in everything, it reduces stress in your life.

4. Think about the right things.

If you want to reduce the level of stress in your life, you must change the way you think. The way you think determines how you feel, and the way you feel determines how you act. So if you want to change your life, you need to change what you are thinking about.

This involves a deliberate, conscious choice where you change the channels of your mind, much like you would change the channels on your TV: You can choose to think about the right things, focus on the positive and on God’s Word. Why should you do this? Because the root cause of stress is the way you choose to think. Think properly and positively and you will minimize the stress in your life.

When we no longer worry, when we pray about everything, when we give thanks, when we focus on the right things, the apostle Paul assures us the result will be, “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

For the second year the Florida Legislature has been asked by men in the Senate and House in Tallahassee to re-write the law concerning alimony by eliminating permanent alimony from Chapter 61 of the Florida Statutes which contains the dissolution of marriage laws.

A comprehensive explanation of the proposed new statute appears below, prepared by members of the Family Law Section of The Florida Bar. Will there be an alimony award?

The answer depends on the response to four questions: 1. Does the spouse requesting alimony actually need it?

The person seeking alimony must prove that he or she needs alimony, but need alone is not enough to receive an alimony award.

2. Is the spouse being asked to pay alimony (the “payor”) able to pay alimony?

Even if the requesting spouse proves that he or she needs alimony, it cannot be awarded if the other spouse does not have the ability to pay support.

3. How long should the recipient spouse receive alimony?

If the spouse asking for alimony proves he or she needs alimony AND the court finds that the other spouse is able to pay alimony, then the court will consider a number of factors to decide how long the alimony award should be. Those factors include the length of the marriage and the requesting spouse’s current income and future earning ability.

4. What types of alimony are there and how does the court decide which type is appropriate?

Florida has bridge-thegap, rehabilitative, durational, permanent, and lump sum alimony – or a combination, depending upon the facts of the case. Bridge-thegap alimony can only be awarded for up to two years. The purpose of rehabilitative alimony is to help the requesting spouse become self-sufficient through training or education and requires a detailed

training or educational plan.

Durational alimony is awarded where permanent alimony is not needed and cannot be awarded for an amount of time longer than the length of the marriage. Lump sum alimony is infrequently awarded and only where necessary for support in unusual circumstances or where necessary for use as an equalizing payment.

Florida courts do not routinely award permanent alimony. Florida courts can ONLY award permanent alimony after making findings of fact that no other form of alimony is fair and reasonable. Before awarding permanent alimony, the court must first determine that rehabilitative alimony, bridge-the-gap alimony, durational alimony, lump-sum alimony or some combination of the above will NOT provide the spouse with the ability to become self-sufficient. Permanent alimony awards are almost always ONLY made in long term marriages where the incomes of the two spouses are very disparate.

Permanent alimony can be modified. Courts may reduce or terminate a permanent alimony award based upon substantial changes in the circumstances of either the payor or the recipient spouse, including retirement, the existence of a supportive relationship, an increase in the income (and decreased need) of a recipient spouse, or a reduction in the income of the payor spouse.

Permanent alimony terminates automatically if the recipient spouse remarries.

Florida courts cannot order permanent non-modifiable alimony.

Sometimes, for a variety of reason, parties AGREE to non modifiable alimony. If they do so agree, in writing, then the court cannot modify the alimony obligation. This is the ONLY circumstance under which the courts cannot modify alimony. Furthermore, the court does NOT have the authority to order permanent non-modifiable alimony.

This Yellow Brick Road Loses Its Way

By Skip Sheffield The original 1939 MGM musical film version of “The Wizard of Oz” was a perfect storm of creativity and inspiration. Filmmakers have been trying to top this most-watched film ever since, to no avail.

“Oz the Great and Powerful” is

the latest attempt. To put it kindly, it falls short.

This is a non-musical prequel to the MGM classic, produced by the Disney conglomerate. Okay, it has incidental music by the ubiquitous Danny Elfman.

James Franco stars as the title character Oscar Diggs, a third-rate magician and serial heartbreaker also known as Oz. Like the 1939 film it starts out in Kansas in black-andwhite. Also like the original some Boca Life & Arts

actors play dual roles in Kansas and the colorful, magical Land of Oz. Screenwriters Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire make a lot of references to the 1939 film, but there are some things they could not use, such as the famous ruby slippers and the specific design of the Emerald City. Happily there are

plenty of Munchkins.

What “Oz the Great and Powerful” lacks in originality it makes up in special effects, including 3-D, computer-generated imagery, IMAX in limited release and a thundering soundtrack. Director Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man 3”) also pours on the blood and gory effects. The Wicked Witch’s flying monkeys look like they could have flown in from Raimi’s earlier horror flick, “Evil Dead.”

A basic problem with this re-

imagining is that the character of the Wizard of Oz is one of its least interesting. Sure he’s a cad, a fraud and a con man, but so what? We see a lot of them in real life.

Franco, who was the third choice to play Oz, does his level best to make his character relatable, but Oscar Diggs just is not very magnetic.

Far more interesting are the three witches, which are the best thing about the movie.

Mila Kunis makes the most arresting transformation; from the alluring, beautiful Theodora to the green-skinned, pointynosed cackling hag we remember tormenting Judy Garland.

Rachel Weisz also gets her bad girl on as Theodora’s even more evil sister, Evanora. Weisz clearly enjoys playing her unredeemable villain, and it is fun, if fleeting, for us.

Over on the goody-goody side, we have Michelle Williams, playing the virginal Annie in Kansas and “Glinda the Good” in Oz. Williams

has never looked lovelier, but that is her one dimension.

James Franco gets a computergenerated sidekick; a flying monkey called Finley, who was a human called Frank back in Kansas. Zach Braff voices both characters most sympathetically.

A real head-scratcher is the character of China Girl, a tiny porcelain doll voiced by Joey King.

I supposed the character is designed to show Oz’s compassionate side, but she is of little use otherwise.

“Oz the Great and Powerful” has a rather open ending which hints of a sequel, but I don’t think so. If you want and really involving prequel and tribute to both the 1939 movie and writer L. Frank Baum’s original 1900 tale, go see the stage musical “Wicked” when it comes to town again, or better yet, catch it at New York’s Gershwin Theatre.

As a stage musical “Flashdance”

debuted in the U.K. in 2008. It was based on the 1983 movie starring Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri.

Emily Padget stars as Alexandra “Alex” Owens, the role originated by Jennifer Beals.

Jennifer had a dance double in the movie. Padget does all her own moves, and she is most impressive.

So is her voice, which is powerful and soars to unexpected heights. Oh yes, and she is very attractive, befitting the role of an 18year old Pittsburgh iron foundry welder by day and exotic dancer by

Shipley Academy perhaps she can win a scholarship.

A big reason critics scoffed at “Flashdance” was because of its unlikely, unbelievable basic plot.

Hey, critics scoffed at “Rocky” too, and look what happened there.

Making the story unlikelier still is Alex’s love interest: Nick Hurley (a beautifully-refined tenor Matthew Hydzik), whose family owns the iron factory where Alex has her day job.

A subplot is the order to force Nick to cut jobs at the foundry. How can he do this and woo fair Alex too?

Another subplot centers on

with high-kicking choreography, high volume rock music, highlyspirited vocal performances and brilliant MTV-style graphics. The small, keyboard-heavy, electronicallyenhanced pit band has a couple of radically ripping guitarists and an ace bassist. Anthems like “Maniac,” “I Love Rock and Roll” and “Gloria” are guaranteed to get an audience off its seats. Judging by the opening night reception, “Flashdance” should enjoy standing ovations nightly.

Movie Review Skip Sheffield “Hava Nagila: The Movie”

By Skip Sheffield If you are a musician who has ever been in a band that plays weddings, anniversaries, bat or bar mitzvahs or other such festive occasions, it is inevitable that you will be asked to play “Hava Nagila.”

My brothers and I accepted this fact of life many years ago. We even learned the Hebrew words

phonetically. The English translation is “Let us Rejoice, let us rejoice!, Let us rejoice and be glad.” Who can argue with such an upbeat assertion?

In my humble opinion, if you refuse to play Hava Nagila, you don’t belong in show business.

Director Roberta Grossman and writer Sophie Sartain prove just how deeply this catchy little tune has infused itself into the world’s culture with their film with the tongue-in-cheek title “Hava Nagila: The Movie.”

If you are wondering how a feature-length film can be built around such a short, simple melody, Boca Life & Arts

wonder no more. The evolution of “Hava Nagila” is long (more than 150 years) and quite complicated.

What makes “Hava Nagila: The Movie” so entertaining is the sheer diversity of the cast of musicians, religious leaders, scholars and just plain ordinary people.

“It’s happy yet it’s Jewish,” explains one of the rabbis interviewed. “It is the kudzu of Jewish music.”

“Hava Nagila” had its origins in the 19th century shtetls of the Russian Ukraine. As Jews fled Russia because of religious oppression, the song traveled with them; to Palestine, Eastern Europe, the USA and Canada and beyond. When the Jewish State was established in 1948 the song became symbolic of freedom.

Perhaps that is why Harry Belafonte embraced the song very early in his career and had a hit with it. So did Connie Francis, Glen Campbell and even surf guitarist Dick Dale.

Comedian Allen Sherman made good-natured fun of the song with his parody “Harvey and Sheila.” Bob Dylan cheerfully mangled the song with “Talkin’ Hava Nagila Blues.”

You may learn more than you ever care to know about “Hava Nagila,” but you will laugh along for the ride.

The filmmakers acknowledge there are “Hava-haters,” but it takes a real curmudgeon to not enjoy this little movie.

A Celebration to Remember Two-time Oscar-winning singer/ songwriter Carol Connors was in town recently. She attended the birthday celebration for Yaacov Heller of Gallery 22 in Royal Palm Plaza. Connors is most famously known for co-writing the “Rocky� theme song, which earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Based in Los Angeles, Connors began her singing career as a member of the Teddy Bears, a late 50s vocal group that also featured Phil Spector in its line-up.

Teenager Arrested for Robbing Teamwork Nets Two Potential Two Men Outside Closed Business Burglars Boca Raton, FL – On Tuesday, February 26, 2013, two men were robbed at gunpoint outside a closed business at 2300 North Dixie Highway. During the robbery one victim’s iPhone was taken.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at about 9:00 a.m., Boca Raton detectives tracked the cell phone to an address in West Palm Beach.

The home was checked at about 3:30 p.m., but the phone was not found. The next day detectives tracked the phone to another location, a short distance from the first location. They found the phone in a bedroom and the homeowner told officers it belonged to her boyfriend. The boyfriend told officers he had bought the phone at about 2:30 p.m. the day before from a neighborhood kid known as “Petey.”

Boca Raton, FL – On Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Boca Raton Police detectives were in the area of 116 NE Wavecrest Way when they saw a rental van parked in the driveway and two males standing at the front door. As detectives watched, the males got into the van and drove slowly out of the area.

Detectives followed the van and as it entered I-95 from Palmetto Park Road.

Detectives arrested and charged Winn with robbery with a firearm.

Winn has an extensive criminal history. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers stopped the van and made contact with the driver, Jason Demitro, and passenger, Perry Quick. Demitro said he was in Boca Raton to look at a Corvette he had seen advertised for sale on Craig’s List. He said he met with the owner of the Corvette, who lives in the area of NE 44th Street near Dixie Highway, and he gave officers the owner’s phone number. Demitro said that after looking at the car, they left and drove down A1A to Palmetto Park Road and made no other stops.

Quick gave a similar account of their actions. Officers called the owner of the Corvette who said he lives on Wavecrest Way and that he spoke with the two subjects about the car when they showed up at his house.

Both suspects then changed their stories, but still insisted they hadn’t stopped at any other homes.

Officers continued to question the inconsistencies of Demitro’s and Quick’s ever changing stories. The resident at 116 NE Wavecrest Way identified Demitro and Quick as the two men who knocked on her door.

Officers arrested Demitro and Quick for loitering and prowling.

Candle Causes House Fire Boca Raton- At approximately 9:49AM Boca Raton Firefighters responded to a house fire located at 3160 NW 56 Street. The occupant called 911 and stated that her house was on fire. Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services personnel found upon their arrival flames and smoke coming from a second story window at the rear of the home. The occupant mentioned that she had lit an aroma candle in the room where the fire was

located. She had gone downstairs to meet with some delivery men. She noticed the fire shortly thereafter.

Thanks to the quick actions of Boca Raton Firefighters the fire was confined to just the one bedroom.

No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services Department.

Disgraceful...Simply Disgraceful 3-11-13, a date that will go down in Boca Raton’s history for it characteristic of being made up by three prime numbers. A prime number is a number that can only be divided by itself and by the number one. This numerical axiom is a reflection of what seems to be the city council’s collective prime directive of disrespect, disinterest, and dismissal towards the very citizens the body politic is elected to represent.

Sitting through almost 5 hours of testimony at the Community Redevelopment Agency’s afternoon meeting, this observer cannot help but face the reality that the elected officials of this city simply do not like the citizens they are elected to represent.

The body language, the non-attentive attitude, the bias afforded the project’s proponent and the general antagonistic mood towards the citizens was so very evident to be nothing short of disgraceful, a political embarrassment.

Over the last year now, the Archstone Palmetto Park apartment development project on East Palmetto Park road between Mizner Blvd and NE 5th Ave on the north side of the street has been the subject of great controversy. The project consists of a building mass over three football fields in length and 100 feet in height, a behemoth not matched by any other project within the downtown and one that will forever change the face of Boca Raton.

Archstone Palmetto Park has caused much controversy over the last year. It has been challenged by surrounding neighborhood groups representing hundreds, if not thousands of individual Boca Raton citizens; it has been the subject of a referendum petition, a circuit court action, a pending appeal in the appellate court, and now, with the cooperation of the majority of the city council, an end run around the citizens’ court victory allowing for a referendum vote of the people by approving an amended petition with the full cooperation and concurrence of the city’s staff and the majority of the elected body.

The voice of the people be damned.

Archstone Palmetto Park has also instigated funding by the city council of taxpayer dollars to engage lobbyists at the state level in an effort to pass legislation designed to prevent citizens in the future from having any voice in a city’s development issues through the petition process; to wit: a process reserved to the citizens by the city’s own charter. These efforts again demonstrate the council’s prime

directive to support another end run around the will of the people by those entrusted with the obligation to govern the people.

The Archstone project is being offered by a multi-billion dollar development company represented by a cadre of lawyers and lobbyists beholden to the notion of profitability and disguised as an economic development opportunity for the city.

The opposing voice, arguably, is a citizens’ group who have diligently objected to this project, hired counsel, incurred costs and acted appropriately in an effort to have their arguments heard at an impartial hearing by those elected to provide such a forum, the city council. Well, I suggest to the reader take the time and watch Channel 20’s rerun of what was anything but an impartial hearing. (www.ci.bocaraton. fl.us/city/agendas.aspx) The true opponents in this argument are not the citizens versus Archstone Palmetto Park but rather the collective city council versus its own citizens. Archstone Palmetto Park is the catalyst. The antagonist is our governing body, a collective group of elected officials that has lost patience with its citizens and is now attempting to overpower the citizens by the use of political, legal, financial and coercive force.

Citizens deserve to be heard.

Their collective voice is heart and soul of what makes Boca Raton this special place worth fighting for.

Elected officials cannot afford to lose patience with the citizens in favor of the developer. Increasing revenue be damned; process be damned.

Representative city government is charged with the obligation of listening with an open mind when the citizens’ speak. That was not the case on this one day, 3/11/13.

P.S.: As symbolism should not be overlooked. Tuesday, 3/12/13, marks 365 days from the next date for the citizens to speak…the next date when this city council can be replaced.

Election Day 2014 is expected to allow the citizens to vote for as many as four seats on the city council including the seat of mayor. A moment in time when the citizens can take back their government, take back the opportunity to be heard by a government willing to listen and effectuate the will of the people not simply their own individual will.

A mere one year from now…..the citizens’ prime directive

Delores Zager Delores Zager, 84, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in Naples, Florida. Born Delores Alice Janz on May 10, 1928, in West Bend, Wisconsin, Delores married Joseph Zager on September 11, 1950. Joe and Delores were restaurateurs for over 35 years. They owned The Beacon Restaurant in West Bend until 1972, then moved to Boca Raton, Florida. In Boca Raton, they operated The Chef ’s Corner on 1st Avenue. Delores was very active in church, serving as a Deacon at the Congregational Church of Boca Raton until she moved to Bonita

Dwyane Wade is Back and Peaking at the Right Time By: Pedro Heizer Dwyane Wade has made a living out of proving people wrong. He’s been doubted from High School to the Pros, and all those times he has come out on top and proved his doubters wrong.

Remember when the season started and ESPN disrespectfully placed Wade at number eight in their NBA Player Ranking? Remember when Wade was coming back from his offseason knee injury and the so-called experts said he was past his prime? Remember when fans decided to turn their back on our beloved MV3 and proclaimed him a liability and should be traded for younger pieces?

At the start of the season, Wade was averaging career lows in almost every category, 17.1 points per game, 4.8 assists per game, and 4.5 rebounds per game.

What people didn’t understand was that this was to be expected from a 31-year old coming off a knee surgery, but fans wanted results, and quick.

Since that dismal first month of the season, Wade’s numbers have steadily gone back to Wadelike numbers and quietly, Wade is having his most efficient shooting season of his career.

During the 19-game win streak, Wade is shooting a career-best 54 percent and averaging 24.2 points and 5.6 assists per game. Wade has also been especially clutch late in games, shooting 61 percent in the fourth quarter since the start of February.

Wade also extended his streak of games with at least one steal to 23 in a row last night.

Because of his terrific week, Wade was awarded by the NBA as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the first time this season.

During the week of March 4-10 Wade averaged 25 points per game on 60 percent shooting from the field and 88 percent shooting from the line. The 10-year NBA veteran also averaged five assists, four rebounds and 3.5 steals over that stretch.

The former Finals MVP started the week off with a 32-point, 10-rebound performance in Minnesota March 4. He then finished with 24 points and six rebounds in Miami’s dramatic win over Orlando March 6 before scoring 23 points on Sunday against Indiana.

At 31, Wade has been able to evolve his game without sacrificing his aggressive style that made him one of the most explosive players in the league early in his career. “My role is just different now. I ask myself would I rather do great things on a bad team and average 27 points per game or average 22 and be on one of the best teams.”

Wade has never been the type of player to play all 82 games in a season. Due to his aggressive style of play, he’s bound to be bruised up on a nightly basis. What must be noted is Wade’s resilience and willpower to always come back stronger than the previous time.

During the 2007-2008 season in which Heat fans saw Miami go 15-67, Wade was shut down with more than two months to go on the season because of injuries.

People had counted him out then, but with the Sports

help of his personal trainer Wade played in the 2008 Olympics and led the “Redeem Team” in scoring.

He came back to the Heat for the 2008-2009 season and had an MVP-type season.

“There are moments that you never want to be doubted,” Wade said. “For the most part, I go through a point like that every year the past few

Strikers Acquire Stefan Dimitrov on Loan from New York Cosmos

New York Cosmos forward Stefan Dimitrov has joined the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on loan for the duration of the NASL spring season according the the Cosmos.

“This is a great opportunity for Stefan to get some games in and keep up his fitness,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “I wish him the best at the Strikers and I hope he is able to come back to the Cosmos in top shape.”

The 28 year-old Bulgarian forward is immediately eligible for the Strikers.

“I’m looking forward to giving my all in Ft. Lauderdale, then returning and putting that experience to work for the Cosmos,” Dimitrov said. “I played under (Strikers coach) Daryl Shore for a year at the Fire, so he knows what kind of player I am. I’m excited because he knows how to help me develop on the pitch and will know the best way to utilize me.”

Dimitrov played with an amateur Bulgarian team inQueens, New York before enrolling in and playing college soccer for Concordia College.

Dimitrov was the leading scorer in the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer 2008 regular season with 23 goals in

17 games. He was also named to the 2008 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-America Second Team and named the 2008 East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Dimitrov was signed by Chicago Fire in March 2009, after being invited to try out with the team by head coach Denis Hamlett. He made

his MLS debut on 13 June 2009, as a late substitute in a game against D.C. United.

Dimitrov joins a great front line that includes players like Andy Herron, Walter Restrepo, and Mark Anderson, who combined for 25 goals last season, and newcomer David Foley.

“We’re excited we were able to

work out a deal with the Cosmos to bring in Stefan Dimitrov,” said Strikers head coach Daryl Shore.

“He’s a player I’ve had some past experience with and he’s a target forward who is good in the air and we’re looking forward to him getting down here and playing for the Strikers.”

Strikers continue to make moves this offseason to bring the Soccer Bowl to South Florida.

Earlier this week the Strikers added a wealth of experience and veteran leadership to the team’s back line with the signing of former Jamaican national team captain Shavar Thomas for the Spring season and the re-signing of last year’s team captain Toni Ståhl for the entire 2013 season. Per team policy, terms of the deals are not disclosed.

“Shavar has had a great professional, as well as a great international career, and we’re excited that he’s accepted to join our team as we look to build our defensive group for this season,” said head coach Daryl Shore. “We know he’s going to be a positive role model both on and off the field given the kind of leader he’s been for his clubs and his country. To add a player of his caliber is pretty special for us.”

Shavar Thomas, 32, has several championships to his credit including winning back-to-back Caribbean Championships in 2008 and as captain in 2010. Thomas was also a member of the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup winning team while with Kansas City. He also played in the 2004 Olympics and in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009 and 2011.

“My goal is always to win games Sports

and win championships, so hopefully we can be a strong unit and that will translate into us earning a lot of points,” said Shavar Thomas. “I’m looking forward to playing with the team. I’m very familiar with Lockhart Stadium having played there with Jamaica against teams like Peru and Colombia.”

Thomas brings 10 seasons of professional experience to the Strikers and shares a common bond with Toni Ståhl as both players attended the University of Connecticut.

Toni Ståhl, 27, has been a defensive stalwart for the Strikers since the 2011 season when he was named to the NASL’s Best XI team.

Ståhl will resume his position at the center of defense after a successful 2012 season where he was second on the team in minutes with 1,859.

“We’re excited to bring Toni back as a part of our core group,” said Shore. “When you add him in with guys like Shavar [Thomas], Ivan Guerrero and Scott Gordon, we’d like to think we’re going to have a pretty good group in the back this

year.”

The Strikers continue the 2013 preseason with a series of collegiate friendlies. The team will head across the state to take on Florida Gulf Coast University on Wednesday, March 13, before facing Barry University, Nova Southeastern, and Florida Atlantic University. Fort Lauderdale opens the 2013 NASL Spring season at historic Lockhart Stadium on Saturday, April 6, against FC Edmonton.
