Local Entrepreneur Seeks a win with Shula Burger Team Delray Beach resident and entrepreneur Carrie LaNoce is no stranger to success, and her latest venture finds her following in the footsteps of a legend. Joining former Miami Dolphins Coach Don Shula in his Shula family of restaurants, LaNoce is making her mark running the first independently owned and operated Shula Burger franchise in the U.S. Shula Burger features quality Black Angus beef, gourmet ingredients, hand-crafted beers and legendary shakes. The restaurant features an open kitchen where customers can see their burgers being made using fresh ingredients and our signature blend of Black Angus chuck, brisket and short rib. The Shula legacy is also on display at the location, with pop art featuring the Shula story. LaNoce knows it’s the perfect time to launch the Shula Burger concept in South Florida. Americans are embracing their love of burgers while simultaneously lamenting their lack of free time, and LaNoce is eager to move forward with the fast-casual plus concept and begin competing with other burger brands on the national level. “I’m honored and excited to open the first independently owned and operated Shula Burger franchise in the country, and feel like I’m in the perfect position to satisfy South Florida’s craving for gourmet burgers with a trusted brand name 100% behind me every step of the way,” LaNoce said. Before joining the Shula Burger team, LaNoce was part of family entrepreneurial efforts – owning businesses with her brothers. With
the opening of her Shula Burger location, LaNoce joins a proud tradition of the more than 50 percent of women who own their own businesses. “Women are launching businesses at nearly twice the national average, and I’m honored to be opening the very first Shula Burger franchise,” said LaNoce. “The Shula name is a big one to live up to based on Coach Shula’s reputation as both a hall of fame Coach and iconic restaurateur, but I am confident I have the entrepreneurial background and relentless work ethic necessary to make the first independent Shula Burger location a success. Plus, as a woman who has lived in Delray Beach for years, I understand how to appeal to families in our neighborhood and ensure they get the best burger in a family friendly environment at the right price.” Shula Burger’s Delray Beach Grand Opening: Wednesday, July 10th, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. 14917 Lyons Road, Suite 114 Delray Beach, Florida As part of the celebration, Shula Burger will hold a special in-store drawing to reward 50 fans attending the event with a free burger each month for an entire year! Owner Carrie LaNoce will donate 5 percent of the net proceeds from the opening day sales to Achievement Centers for Children and Families, an organization that has been near and dear to the Shula family for years. This charity provides affordable, quality care for children whose parents wouldn’t be able to keep their job or go to school without this service.

Reaching for the Stars When I assumed this position, I promised you I would chime in and share my thoughts occasionally as warranted. I also offered you a forum to share your thoughts, express your frustrations and just sound off on whatever is on your mind. Local reader Zelda Parker, a care provider to children with special needs, wants to share her experience and I will give her my platform to do so. See you next week By Zelda Parker During the last few years, I have had extensive experience working with special needs children of varying ages. It has been both rewarding and challenging. This experience has helped me better understand my own strengths and limitations and better appreciate the education and opportunities I have been offered throughout my lifetime. My experience has shown me that patience and perseverance are the chief characteristics of the person providing the education to these children. The education provider must be able to nurture the innate curiosity within each child and build the power of discovery into each lesson. The most basic element in providing educational opportunities to special needs children begins with building the rapport. Sometimes the education provider develops as close a bond with the child as his or her own parents. In essence, the educator becomes a mentor or a big sister or brother. The child must feel that the educator is absolutely watching out for that child’s best interests. This bond involves closely watching how the child interacts with other children as well as the environment. The child must feel comfortable with expressing his thoughts and emotions about a wide range of topics including controversial social issues. This rapport is built on the basis of being able to provide constructive criticism without value judgment.
Another element in teaching children with special needs is to try to teach them basic life skills, which will allow them to gain a sense of freedom and independence. Teaching each child to be independent instills the confidence to move forward to meet new challenges and skills. The first time the child is able to go to the store and pay with the proper change opens up a new frontier. Yet, another example is when the child reads the words and understands the sign: “50 percent off.” A third example is being able to understand the importance of depositing money in the bank and the art of saving money. In essence, try to level the playing field for the child, so that he or she is closer in development to peers. Peer pressure is often a negative when it comes to a child with special needs. The inability to keep up with peers can lead to the child feeling insecure and inferior to others for many years to come. A third element is the importance for these children to start with a simple task that has very definable outcomes and to complete it at his or her own rate. Quite often, adults do not give the child proper time and guidance and then expect the child to achieve the desired goal. Communication is the key. It is especially important for the child to know what is expected and how to reach the goal. The child should be allowed the space to think independently to overcome obstacles. This allows the child to develop higher level thinking skills and to solve problems. It is important not to micromanage but provide guidance when necessary. Furthermore, it is important not to allow the child to become overly frustrated and to quit out of anger. The education provider should remember that often the best lessons learned were from mistakes that were made or tasks not completed exactly as planned. Once a child is ready, the education provider will know when to bundle simple tasks and provide more complicated assignments. A fourth fundamental for the special www.bocaratontribune.com
needs child is to capitalize on his or her hobbies. Many important facts and discoveries are made from letting the child branch out from an initial interest. This is perhaps the best way to teach research and follow-up skills. All types of higherlevel learning can be achieved by allowing the child to make discoveries and then pounce on the “aha moment”. Create the environment where there is a thirst for knowledge. Encourage the child to ask questions and draw conclusions. A fifth fundamental is to remember that individuals
learn at different rates and by different methods. The lesson here is to get to know the child and match his other learning style and rate. Guide the child in developing by teaching to natural ability and teach that child how to compensate for inherent weaknesses. The biggest lesson to be learned is that you as an education provider make a difference in a child’s life. You hold the key to unlock the child’s potential. The sky is the limit. There is no turning back. Commitment, dedication, and a sense of purpose are your guideposts.

THOUGHTS FROM THE PUBLISHER By Douglas Heizer
The Pervasive Power Of Persistence By: Robert J. Tamasy What would you consider the foremost requirement for success in the workplace? Would it be talent? Or education? Training? Good luck? Certainly each of these can be a factor in professional success. But there is one other quality that might be more important than all of them – persistence. Richard M. DeVos, Sr., co-founder of the Amway Corporation and owner of the National Basketball Association’s Orlando Magic, offered this perspective: “If I had to select one quality, one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick the trait of persistence. Determination. The will to endure to the end, to get knocked down 70 times and get up off the floor saying,
‘Here comes number 71!’” DeVos seems to have a good point. If we think of top achievers in virtually any pursuit – government, business, technology, science, medicine, even sports and entertainment – we find most of them did not become “overnight successes,” but rather made their marks through hard work and a resolve never to accept failure as a final verdict. When we read the biographies of famous people, we usually discover they utilized adversity as motivation to keep trying, rather than as an excuse for quitting. I have a friend who overcame great disadvantages in childhood and young adulthood to forge a very successful career as an entrepreneur and sales executive. Despite a limited education and a lack of training, he embarked on a
rigorous self-improvement program, despite scoffers that insisted he was doomed to fail. Persistence, even in the face of setbacks, was his constant companion. The Bible has much to say about persistence and its close cousin, perseverance. For instance: Persistence builds character. Just as persistent exercise strengthens and tones muscles, persistence in the face of everyday challenges and obstacles builds character and inner strength. “…but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us…” (Romans 5:3-5). Persistence provides joy. Staying the course, refusing to give up, and then reaping the fruits of hard work and determination, provides a sense of joy and fulfillment that cannot be
achieved in any other way. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4). Persistence reinforces purpose. When we focus on specific goals and an overriding, clearly defined mission, they help us to persevere despite discouragement and disappointment. As DeVos said, we can get knocked down 70 times and get up again. “Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14).
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Your Other Potential Best Friends! It’s a well-known affirmation, that dogs are the best friends any human can have. Their loyalty, their playfulness, and their constant presence by the side of their owner are among several other appreciated qualities they bring to one’s life. Amazing is also what trained canines can do for a person destitute of good vision or afflicted by a degenerative malady, as well as the services they render to officers of the law in a variety of situations! Indeed, no one can deny the loyalty of such animals and the consistency of the friendship they are capable of offering to members of the households they occupy, almost as if they were family!
Another potential best friend which is not viewed as universally as a dog is a book. It’s sad, when such is the case, because books are indeed friends available twenty-four hours any day to anyone seeking their company. Regardless of its age, a book has a lot to offer, regardless of the language in which it was written. It can provide knowledge, instill wisdom, expand the mind, augment one’s vocabulary, and even bring therapy to its reader, regardless of the subject of its content! I never forget the experience I once had of talking with a groom and his best man, while we waited for the call to move to the area where the wedding
I was to officiate would occur. The best man, a high school drop-out, boasted of the fact that he had never read a book in his life, nor he ever planned to. It was a sad statement to hear, for it denoted a tragic reality more present in our society than anyone would like to acknowledge as true. People who had bad experiences in school seem to associate books only with school work, not recognizing the value that other kinds of reading can bring to anyone’s personal growth and total development as a person. Because my entire life has been and continues to be enriched beyond measure by my love for books, I can only recommend this tool to my
readers, regardless of age. In case, no day goes by without some hours being devoted to reading, to enlarge my mind, to accumulate new knowledge and feelings, and to be able to look at life from additional angles which reading opens up. Wisdom does not come only from books, entertainment is not limited to the printed page, knowledge is to be found beyond reading materials. At the same time, books will never disappoint you in offering you the same and much more! It shall always remain a legitimate best friend to those who keep their company!

Boca Raton Police investigate strong arm robbery Boca Raton, FL – Detectives with the Boca Raton Police Services Department are investigating a strong-arm robbery that occurred at approximately 7:25 pm Tuesday, June 4th. The victim says she was at Memorial Park on Crawford Boulevard with her two children. While her children played, the victim was running laps around a field. She became concerned when she noticed two black males standing on the southeast corner of the field staring at her. Due to her concern, she and her two children left the area. While walking south in the City Hall parking lot, the victim
noticed the two men walking in the same direction. She proceeded down West Palmetto Park Road to SW 3rd Avenue. The two men continued to follow them. The two men then caught up with the victim and her children on SW 3rd Avenue. One stayed on his cell phone from the field all the way to when he approached the victim. That’s when one of the suspects ripped a gold necklace off her neck and ran north on SW 3rd Avenue, then east on SW 3rd Street. The victim lost sight of them heading south on SW 1st Avenue along the railroad tracks.
Savvy resident thwarts potential break in Boca Raton, FL – On Monday, June 3, 2013 at about 11:30 a.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a suspicious incident in the 200 block of NW 9th Avenue. The resident called police when she saw a male, wearing a delivery type uniform, get out of the back seat of a grey SUV, knock on her door, and then look into her windows. As officers arrived in the area, they saw the SUV back out of the driveway and head south on NW 9th Avenue. The officer gave the Florida tag number to the dispatcher and was told the tag was stolen. Officers stopped the SUV and made contact
with the driver, Vincena Osborne, front passenger, Xavier Muff, and rear passenger Michael Edwards. Officers discovered the SUV was also reported stolen. Officers checked the exterior of the residence and found both fence gates open, although the resident said they are always closed. Officers arrested all three and charged Osborne with grand theft auto and possession of a stolen tag. Muff and Edwards were charged with trespass of a conveyance. Edwards also had an outstanding warrant for burglary.

Jay & The Americans Come To FAU on July 4
During the 1960’s, Jay & The Americans was one of the few homegrown artists able to get their records on the charts amidst the onslaught of the British Invasion. They even opened up for the Beatles on their first American concert and did the same, a few years later, for the Rolling Stones on their U.S. debut. Eighteen hit records later, the founding members of the group still laugh about how it all started. “All we wanted to do was get a record played on the radio so all of our friends could hear us, like on the Murray the K show,” recalls Sandy Deanne. “When you’re 17 and you’re from Brooklyn, like we were, Boca Life & Arts
it was about getting girls, having people ask for our autographs and hearing that record on the radio, which was the most incredible high I’ve ever had. None of us thought about a career. A career is what Bob Hope had. We were just looking to be famous.” It all started with the haunting single “She Cried” followed by the break-out “Only in America” and the hits just kept on coming for the next 10 years. Smashes like “Come a Little Bit Closer”, “Let’s Lock the Door”, “Some Enchanted Evening” and “Cara Mia” kept the group on the road for the better part of a decade, but as the sixties came
to a close, the Americans needed a shot in the arm. The group signed a record-breaking $3 million deal with United Artists, Sandy recalls, “and we had no new material, so we said, ‘Let’s pick out the songs we like the best that we used to listen to.’” The albums and singles that followed were some of their highest-charted to date, including “This Magic Moment” and “Walkin’ in the Rain.” Today, three original members grace the stage. Sandy, Howie Kane and Marty Sanders carry the torch along with Jay Reincke and their fan base is still growing. “The most amazing part is that we never realized what a legacy we really had
www.bocaratontribune.com
- we sometimes see a 20-year-old kid singing Come A Little Bit Closer and they know the lyrics,” says Sandy. “That’s a wonderful thing.” Jay & The Americans appear at the Carole & Barry Kaye Auditorium at FAU (777 Glades Road, Boca Raton, FL 33431) on July 4 at 6:00 PM. Special guest stars The Original Del-Satins featuring Stan Zizka. Tickets start at $39. A limited number of VIP tickets include a barbecue after the show with the stars. A Serious but Hunky “Man of Steel”
Why so serious Supe? Henry Cavill is easily the hunkiest, most buff Superman there has ever been. He is also the gravest, most humorless Man of Steel since Richard Donner brought the series to the big screen in 1978, with the late Christopher Reeve as a friendly, wisecracking Superman and Margot Kidder as his sexy, sardonic reportergirlfriend Lois Lane. British actor Cavill is the star of the massively expensive reboot “Man of Steel,” directed by Zack Snyder (“300,” “Watchman”). The movie, with screenplay by David S. Goyer and executive producer Christopher Nolan (“Dark Knight Rises”) begins promisingly on the distant planet Krypton with the birth of the baby who will be
June 14, through June 20, 2013
come to known as Superman on planet Earth. The baby’s father Jor-El (Australian actor Russell Crowe) has big plans for his son, called KalEl. Planet Krypton is doomed and rebellious General Zod (a glowering Michael Shannon) is organizing a coup to seize power. Jor-El recovers a codex that contains all of Krypton’s knowledge and packs it in a space ship with his infant son, bound for Earth. Gen. Zod is banished to a Phantom Zone, which is the equivalent of a black hole. So far, so good, but only about 20 minutes have elapsed in a 148-minute film. Suddenly we splash down to the present with a bearded, glistening
Kal-El (Cavill) working as a deckhand on a fishing vessel. When an oil rig catches fire and an explosion seems inevitable, Kal springs into action, propping up the rig, enabling the workers to escape. Then we flash back to Kal’s childhood somewhere in the heartland in the town of Smallville. The baby has been adopted by Jonathan (well-played by Kevin Costner) and Martha Kent (always reliable Diane Lane). Little Clark Kent is different. His father acknowledges this and tells him he has a great responsibility to use his special powers for the good of mankind. We see Clark confront then befriend a bully, Pete Ross, who recurs in the story. Clark is played at age 9 by Cooper Timberline and age 13 by Dylan Sprayberry. Ditto Pete by Joseph Crawford and Jack Foley. This is all well and good, providing needed back story and demonstrating Clark’s great reluctance to use his super powers. When we jump into the present again it is up in the Arctic and Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Lois Lane (Amy Adams) is investigating mysterious goings-on at a NORAD base. Conveniently, Clark is there working. He discovers a spaceship frozen in the ice. Wouldn’t you know it’s from Krypton, and there
www.bocaratontribune.com
is a hologram there with further instructions from Jor-El. When Lois files a report on a suspected UFO frozen in the ice, her skeptical Daily Planet editor Perry White (Laurence Fishbourne) refuses to print it. In a nod to the modern media, Lois goes to an Internet geek who starts blabbing the story all over. This is where all heck proceeds to break loose as Clark Kent’s cover is in danger of being blown and as Gen. Zod, out for vengeance, comes to Earth with a 24-hour ultimatum. Instead of flirty fun between Lois and Clark, who is not yet a mildmannered newspaperman, we have fight after fight between Zod and Superman, who is only called that name behind his back. “It’s not an S,” Kal insists of the symbol on his manly chest. “It’s a symbol of hope.” “Man of Steel” is one of those movies you think is over, only to be confounded when the combatants pick up and start fighting all over again. The CG destruction of vehicles and high-rise after high-rise becomes numbing, even boring. Another installment in this never-ending story is already in the works. Let’s hope it becomes more involving as Clark Kent becomes a reporter and Lois warms to his as yet unrevealed charms. Three stars Boca Life & Arts

Food Review Unfortunately, food cannot compete for your attention here with 24 beers on draught, 32 by the bottle and 5 large beirs on the menu. Bob, Ray, Vic and this reviewer scanned the list of 10 starters and tasted a German favorite – the “Pretzel”, a large salty version served up with house made mustards and very tasty. We tried the “Drunken Meatballs”- rather flat tasting, not a good blended mixture of chopped meats. The potato pancakes were devoid of true potato taste despite the sides of apple chutney, sour cream and chives. We loved the pastrami sliders and the corned beef sliders – large portions of tender, tasty meats – with sauerkraut, house made grain mustard and pickles. They also have steak sliders and BBQ pork sliders – these we will try next time…Chef Ron has winners here! The “Biergarten” burger, ordered medium rare…all natural Florida raised wagyu, all beef knockwurst, cheddar, tomato, coleslaw , onion, and house dressing – creating a mountain of taste! Of the nine entrees, we selected the fish and chips…though the fish was fine Atlantic cod, the dish
needed to be crispy, crunchy which this was not. Not our favorite at all. Sorry to say that the wiener schnitzel wasn’t particularly tasty, even with the braised red cabbage…dull…no snap to the cabbage. The wurst platter had a bratwurst, knockwurst and kielbasa for a trio of nice tastes and textures. Other entrees were fish of the day, chicken schnitzel, beef sauerbraten, kasespatzle, short rib goulash and firecracker pork. Sides includes French fries, coleslaw, cucumber salad, glazed carrots, herbed spaetzle – untried. The potato salad side had so-so taste. 4 Wonderful desserts – apple strudel with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, Bavarian chocolate cream pie, black forest cup cake minis and chocolate stout ice cream sandwiches! Sweet ending to our review of this American German style offering mediocre foods. Biergarten is located at 309 Via de Palmas in Boca Raton (561-3957462) and is open 7 days, Monday through Saturday from 11AM to 2AM, Sunday 11AM to midnight. The menu is a work in progress and changes each 6 months or so. There is a full bar and a kid’s menu.

Forever in Their Memory The Boca Raton High School Class of 1979 held a memorial service for their deceased classmates recently. The brief event, at the Delray Beach Memorial Gardens, featured solos by Steve King, scripture reading and words of reflection. The most chilling moment was when they released about a dozen blue and yellow balloons were released in the air at the end of the program. They are trying to get the exact numbers of members who have passed. “They often say at funerals that, ‘You will be missed but never forgotten. Well, I don’t want them to be forgotten,” said Mable McGowan Taylor, who coordinated the service. “We will miss them but I want it to be known that their memories will never be forgotten.”

Your Life: Waste, Spend Or Invest It?
Three Years?
Practically every day I receive unsolicited mail trying to interest me in some kind of financial investment opportunity. Although wise financial investing is the intelligent thing to do, I have noticed that many people who diligently plan how they will invest their income have never attempted to consider planning for how they will invest their lives. When the time comes, and you arrive at the end of your life, how will YOU determine whether your life was worthwhile? What evaluation criteria are you planning to use? To ask an even more immediate question, how are you investing your life right now? What kind of return or “dividend” are you expecting to receive from the investment of your life? Realistically, you only have three options when you consider what do with the rest of your life: You can WASTE it. There is countless ways for doing this; we see them by looking around. Many people do absolutely nothing with their lives. They simply exist – taking up space and using up air. They make no contribution with their lives. Their hours are consumed by meaningless activity – or no activity at all. You can SPEND it. There are many ways to spend away your life. You can give yourself to a career, or a hobby, or an experience, or travel – any kind of pursuit that captures your interest and seduces you into devoting much of your time, energy and resources to it. An average individual will spend approximately 29,962 days on this earth. The question for each of us is: On what will we spend those days? You can INVEST it. The Bible teaches the best use for our life on earth is to invest it in something that will outlast it! This involves
taking the “long-look” – maintaining a long-range perspective on life. It is interesting how much things can change when you acquire an eternal perspective. As you might expect, the Bible speaks often about the value – and importance – of maintaining an eternal perspective on temporal living. Many of the stories Jesus taught dealt with this theme of investment. In Matthew 25:14-30, for instance, He told a story about three men who were given responsibility for their master’s property. Two of them invested wisely and were rewarded; the third did not and was disciplined. From biblical stories like these, we see seven principles for investing your life: 1. OWNERSHIP: Everything I have really belongs to God. All we have is only on loan to me for the time we are on this earth. 2. ALLOCATION: God strategically gives us specific talents and abilities at birth. 3. ACCOUNTABILITY: God expects us to use the talents He has given to us. One day we will give an account to Him of what we did with what He gave us. 4. UTILIZATION: Using our talents to the fullest involves risk, so faith in God is required. 5. MOTIVATION: What prevents us from developing our talents is fear, unwillingness to venture beyond our “comfort zone.” 6. APPLICATION: If we don’t use our talents, we will lose them. 7. COMPENSATION: If we use our talents the way God intends, He will reward us. Romans 2:6 assures us, “God ‘will give to each person according to what he has done.’”
“The law is an ass” originates in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, when the character Mr. Bumble is informed that “the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”. Picture this: The professional young lady after a few years realizes that her husband is a drunk. Well, no, not just a Saturday night, Sunday football afternoon drunk but an alcoholic; a person who would rather make love to a Bud Light than to her. Best of times and worst she finds herself pregnant, and decides to hold on a bit to see if their little girl would encourage husband to changes his ways. Surprise, surprise…it did not. A divorce ensued. The parties fought over child care issues. The wife sought and got temporary exclusive parenting rights and the husband had supervised visitation only because of his alcoholism and the Judge’s fear of the husband driving his car with the child a passenger. The final hearing in the divorce case was set to start in about a month. The Husband’s lawyer had withdrawn for lack of payment. Word came though the Husband’s camp that he had fallen, cracked his head and was in a coma. The trial was cancelled; the husband in limbo as was the wife. “When can I get divorce,” she asked. After a brief visit with our Trust and Estates partner to confirm what I already knew I had to
tell her that if her husband remained in a coma, or became mentally incompetent as the result of his fall she would have to wait for three years after he was officially found to be incompetent to get divorced. I concluded that if he were to become incompetent he would have a guardian who could negotiate a marital settlement agreement with her, but the marriage could not be ended for three years under a Florida statute. I also told her that while she could bring an Incompetency case to court herself she could not be the guardian because they were in a divorce case against one another. Money was thin all around and not the real issue in the divorce case. The woman had a job with a reasonable paycheck but could not afford to start another case in probate court. All told she appears to be between a rock and a hard place. It also appears that there should be a more flexible path for a person in her situation, albeit unusual, to be able to go ahead with her life. Her income disables her from getting assistance from the local Legal Aid office. Who knows what happens next. Michael H. Don Shula to Open Signature Burger Joint in West Delray Beach in July By Fred Hamilton Football legend Don Shula is taking on the crowded burger category with the July launch of his fast-casual dining concept called Shula Burger in Delray Beach. Shula’s newest restaurant concept will host a grand opening celebration on July 10 in the Delray Marketplace, 14917 Lyons Road, Suite 114, Delray Beach, FL. Store owner, Carrie LaNoce, will be hosting multiple events from 11AM10PM during the grand opening, including a drawing that will give 50 winners free burgers each month for the next year. With indoor and outdoor patio seating, the newest of four Shula Burger locations will provide a family-friendly, fast-casual dining option for Delray Beach residents and visitors to the Delray Beach area, restaurant executives said. This restaurant is the perfect place to satisfy any burger craving. “We’ve combined the hottest trends of better burgers in a fast casual setting with the transparency of cooking right before the customer for a spectacular dining experience we know will catch on here and around the country,” says Coach Don Shula, Shula Burger founder. “The Shula Burger brand allows us to serve more customers more often,
and introduces new consumers to the Shula family and the high quality dining experience we consistently deliver. The brand is a clear winner for us, and we want to accelerate expansion here in South Florida through partners like Delray Beach resident, Carrie LaNoce.” Shula, who has been described as “the winningest coach in National Football League history,” founded the Fort Lauderdale-based Shula’s Steak Houses LLP, which franchises 32 full-service restaurants across 16 states and includes the following brands: Shula’s Steak House, Shula’s 347 Grill, and Shula’s 2 Steak and Sports, and Shula’s Bar and Grill. He is thrilled that Delray Beach resident, Carrie LaNoce, is launching the first independently owned and operated Shula Burger franchise location in West Delray. Located just west of the Florida Turnpike with easy access off of West Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road, Delray Marketplace is wellpositioned to draw from the local Delray market, plus residents and visitors in the Boynton Beach, Boca Raton, and southwest Palm Beach County areas. Nestled between highend gated communities, country/ golf clubs and resorts, and quality new home construction, Delray Marketplace is already becoming Delray Beach’s newest hot spot.
Globally Recognized Boca Tech Firm Relocates to Delray By Elizabeth C. Burrows The Boca Raton technology and IT services firm, Cloud Computing Concepts (C3), will be relocating its corporate headquarters to Delray Beach. The globally recognized company will bring nearly 20 new employees to the downtown area before the end of the year. The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, on May 23, approved an agreement with C3 under the Job Creation Bonus Program, which rewards the company with $38,023.85 for bringing high-paying jobs to the city and retaining them over a five-year period. The program is one of the incentives the CRA offers to attract companies in targeted industries to Delray Beach. “Innovative firms like C3 are a perfect fit for Delray Beach, and we hope these incentives help them reach that conclusion,” CRA Economic Development Director Vin Nolan said. “Such companies want to be downtown, in a chic urban environment with cultural amenities, and they’re willing to invest in retrofitting existing space to meet their needs.” C3 is currently renovating 2,500 square feet of downtown office space in a mixed-use building on East Atlantic Avenue.

The CRA board also approved a $6,000 rent subsidy for C3 through the Business Development Assistance Program. Once the renovation is complete, the business will relocate its 13 existing employees and is slated to create an additional seven job positions within six months. With additional data centers in New York City, Las Vegas and Madrid all planned to open in 2012, C3 delivers onsite and cloud-based IT solutions to businesses across the country. In 2012, C3 was named one of 50 Florida Companies to Watch by the Florida Economic Gardening Institute, and was ranked 84 of the world’s 100 top cloud service providers. The top 100 CSPs generated more than $2.3 billion in combined cloud services revenues for 2011, up nearly 46 percent from 2010, according to the Talkin' Cloud 100 report, which CEO Rick Mancinelli was also featured as one of the top 50 Entrepreneurs in South Florida by Business Leader Magazine in 2012. For more information about the Job Creation Bonus Program and other business incentives available through the Delray Beach CRA, contact Nolan at 561- 276-8640 or at nolanv@mydelraybeach.com. Touring the demolition underway at the Bridge Hotel, one can immediately feel the drama to unfold as the already peerless water views now frame much of the lobby level floor. You see electricians and technicians busy removing the original 1970s elevator casing and wiring and demolition crews bulldozing the lobby to make way for two new restaurants and knocking down several interior walls before heading poolside to remove the outdoor restrooms structure to make way for more deck space. Designers and installers are busy measuring for new carpeting, wall coverings, window treatments, furniture and built-ins and new bathroom tiling, fixtures, and glass enclosed showers. You take in the extended outdoor expanse that wraps the perimeter of the property that will soon offer guests increased outdoor waterfront dining, special event green space for waterside ceremonies and cocktail parties, and unparalleled on-thewater dock-to-dine opportunities for socializing, celebrating or just relaxing. You begin to envision the new total re-orientation of the property, from the new lobby
entrance to the reception areas, meeting rooms, gift shop and where several bar and dining spots will be. Liquidators have already purchased all fits, finishes, carpeting, furniture and lighting for re-sale with a truck-load of hotel furniture donated to Habitat for Humanity. Upon closing, food was shared with employees who helped close the hotel, as well as donated to Boca Helping Hands, Saint Ambrose food bank, and Our Father’s House Soup Kitchen. Transformed to appeal to the needs of today’s discerning guests, the new jewel on the Boca waterfront will be the perfect convergence of stylish hospitality and casual comfort. Every detail from the stunning new lobby, to the tastefully appointed guest rooms and the breathtaking ambience of its unique waterside location – providing guests with the quintessential Boca Raton experience. Upon re-opening, the pet-friendly hotel will feature 128 all-new guest rooms and 11 suites, completely redesigned and restyled with private balconies with breathtaking views of the water.

Strikers take early lead, but fall in stoppage time to Minnesota on the road
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers (2-2-5, 8 points) were unable to capitalize on an early lead on the road and end up falling to Minnesota United FC (4-2-3, 14 points) 2-1 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn on Saturday night. Strikers’ forward Darnell King scored the opening goal before United FC’s
Pablo Campos scored twice in the second half including the gamewinning goal in stoppage time. “We’re disappointed with the result and ourselves for letting this game slip away. We don’t and won’t make excuses and we have to learn from this,” said Strikers’ head coach Daryl Shore.
The Strikers took the early lead on United FC when Darnell King was able to deflect a clearance attempt from United FC goalkeeper Matt VanOekel in the 10th minute and scored from yards away on the open net. Both sides traded several scoring chances following the Strikers’ goal with United FC getting a barrage in the 34th minute that ended without a clean shot on net. Fort Lauderdale thought they had a golden chance in the 36th minute when Jemal Johnson was played through and crossed to a wide open Darnell King, but the play was called back for being offside. Pablo Campos equalized for United FC in the 57th minute on a penalty kick, as his shot went off the crossbar and into the goal. The Strikers’ Scott Gordon was called for a handball in the penalty area to draw the foul.
In the 64th minute, Hosman Ramos made an excellent run into the box, but his shot was right at VanOekel who made the save. The Strikers were able to put several shots on goal in the second half. In the 70th minute, Pecka played a pass to Johnson who was able to shoot toward the near post with VanOekel once again making the save. Pablo Campos scored the game-winning goal in second half stoppage time for United FC. Simone Bracalello played a cross following a corner kick attempt that Campos headed after the ball went over Strikers goalkeeper Matt Glaeser and behind the Strikers defense. The Strikers return home to face the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday, June 15 at historic Lockhart Stadium.
2-Year Old Miami Heat Fan, Marcel Romero, Wears Heat-Themed Doc Band Helmet to Celebrate Championship Run When Mariangela Romero found out that her son Marcel was suffering from a condition where the left side of his skull was flat, she was shocked and saddened. The specialist in Miami that she and her husband met with said the only option was to have Marcel wear a device, known as a Doc Band Helmet, nearly 24 hours a day until the skull was reshaped – which could take months if not years. Mariangela Romero accepted that Marcel would have to constantly wear the helmet, but she would not accept that the helmet had to look so medical and bare. Luckily, Cranial Technologies of Miami, the company that supplied Marcel with his Doc Band, informed the family of Signs Now Boca Raton, a local signage and branding company, which was generously offering its design and printing services to local South Florida families at no charge. The Romero family traveled from Miami to Signs Now in Boca Raton where they met with the design team that would create a Doc Band wrap for her son. “The reason why it was so
important for us to have Marcel’s helmet designed is so people out in the world don’t look at my baby like if there is something wrong with his head but instead look beyond that and smile at his helmet and see this as a fun thing not a medical condition,” said Mariangela Romero. Given the choice of any design for the Doc Band wrap, the Romero family said there was no question what they wanted displayed on Marcel’s helmet. “My husband Marcel (senior) is a big fan of the Miami HEAT,” Mariangela Romero added. “We decided to design our son’s helmet to feature the team on the back and his name on the front. It is truly exciting to watch the HEAT play in the championships with our son out in public so people can come up to us and cheer.” Signs Now Boca Raton owner Mary Sol Gonzalez first became involved with the cause in 2011, when a parent of a child suffering with Plagiocephaly stopped by the Signs Now office emotional and in need of help. “The parent wanted to do something special with the
Doc Band Helmet her child had to wear,” said Gonzalez. “The existing helmet was boring and plain and we decided adding a little color and a fun character would make the child and parent smile a little more.” What began with the goal of making just one child smile has quickly turned into hundreds of smiles. Signs Now Boca Raton has already donated more than 50 DOC Band (a device for the head which consists of an outer plastic shell with a foam lining) wraps to children suffering from Plagiocephaly. It has committed to providing close to 100 more DOC Band wraps free of charge to special needs children in South Florida in 2013. According to Gonzalez, Signs Now Boca Raton is the only business and/or organization to design and create Doc Band wraps in Florida. She acknowledges they are also one of only a few locations to do it for free in the entire country. (Other businesses require parents to mail in their Doc Band helmet and pay to have it designed, painted, etc.) “I truly feel this is more for the
www.bocaratontribune.com
parents of the children,” Gonzalez added. “It’s the parents that feel the discomfort or sadness when people look at their children. When their child is wearing a fun design on their helmet, people may still stare but typically to complement the featured design.” Andrea Patenaude, who came to Signs Now Boca Raton in 2012 in need of a helmet for her threeyear-old Logan, said: “When the time came to accept that my son would need to be fitted with a DOC Band to address his issues I was very concerned about how it would impact him. I wanted to find a way to make him want to wear it and feel good about wearing it. Signs Now Boca Raton was recommended and it was a great experience from beginning to end. They set me up with an amazing designer who not only made a fabulous design using the characters that Logan loves, but let us participate in the wrapping process. The team at Signs Now made a process filled with uncertainty, certainly great.” June 14, through June 20, 2013

FAU’s Michael Sylvestri Drafted by Washington Nationals Florida Atlantic University's baseball pitcher Michael Sylvestriwas drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 29th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft Saturday. Sylvestri concluded his senior season after compiling a 4-3 record with a 3.86 ERA. He held his 2013 opponents to a .253 batting average and was instrumental in the Owls top-25 national rank and 42-22 record. The converted catcher tossed a total of 75 innings wearing an Owl uniform, including the final inning and a third versus the No. 1 team in the nation at the Chapel Hill Regional Championship. His two-
year record stands at 5-5. "I'm happy for Michael," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "He worked hard to make the transition from catcher to pitcher and I look forward to following his progress through the minor leagues." Sylvestri is the 10th player to be selected in the MLB draft since McCormack assumed the helm of FAU. He also is the 81st FAU player to sign a professional baseball contract that was recruited or played under McCormack's direction. The Owls have had at least one member drafted 15-consecutive seasons (1999-2013).
Lynn Alumnus Matera Signs Deal with Cleveland Indians By Chad Beattie Camden, N.J. – Lynn University baseball alumnus Paddy Matera had his contract purchased from the Camden Riversharks by the Cleveland Indians organization, the Riversharks reported last week. Matera is one of 14 players to sign a minor league deal in program history but first since Kyle Holloway in 2010 to sign with a major league baseball affiliated club. A two-time member of the Fighting Knights from 200809, Matera played a key role on Lynn University’s 2009 national
championship squad. He batted .271 with 12 doubles, five home runs, 38 runs batted in and 42 runs scored during the title run and caught the final out to secure the 19th national crown in Lynn history. Matera, 25, had been batting .297 in 40 games with Camden. At the time he was picked up, he was leading the Riversharks in home runs with six and was second in the Atlantic League with 20 extrabase hits. A returning Rivershark and Toms River, N.J., native, he will begin his affiliated baseball career in high-A Carolina.

Strikers to Host Open Tryouts at Lockhart Stadium in July The Fort Lauderdale Strikers have announced they will host an open tryout at historic Lockhart Stadium during the NASL’s break between the Spring and Fall seasons. Taking place on Saturday, July 13, the one-day tryout will serve as an opportunity for soccer athletes from South Florida and beyond to put their talent on display, with at least one player earning an invitation to train with the Strikers during the preseason. “With every open tryout we’ve had, I’ve seen an improvement in the level of skill and talent of players stating their case to be noticed by our staff,” said Strikers’ head coach Daryl Shore. “Players want the opportunity to be seen and given a chance. It’s our hope to give more players that chance to come to our camp and work to become a part of the Strikers’ organization.” The Strikers have several players who grew up playing in South Florida and participated in an open tryout or combine before joining the Strikers. Players such as Gonzalo De Mujica, Manny Gonzalez and
