Paw-ty Time to Benefit the Tri County Humane Society

Paw-ty Time will once again be the hot spot for pups and the people who love them on Sunday, August 11th from 11 am to 3pm at the Shoppes at Village Pointe in Boca Raton. This awareness and fundraising party for the Tri County Humane Society is hosted by Yvonne Boice, the owner of the shopping plaza and a devoted dog lover herself. The event is free and open to the community. Paw-ty Time will feature an array of fun-filled activities for the entire family. Entrepreneurial Team to Expand South Florida’s Iconic Sloan’s Ice Cream Brand into Delray By Fred Hamilton There will soon be more of the famed Sloan’s ice cream to share with countless new Palm Beach County residents and visitors. The Palm Beach-based Sloan’s — a luxury brand combining innovative flavors with over-the-top aesthetics, has closed a deal to put a parlor at 111 E. Atlantic Ave., next to Tramonti Restaurant, at 111 E Atlantic Ave., company officials said on Wednesday. The 2,500 sq. foot building, which has been vacant for some time, used to be the home of a gift shop. It will feature all of the staples that have made Sloan's a beloved ice cream destination in Palm Beach County -- the over-the-top atmosphere, candy, toys, magical fog bathrooms and, of course, Sloan Kamenstein's memorable ice cream flavors. “When I first stepped inside a Sloan’s store, I realized this is the opportunity my family had been searching for,” said David Olmo, a longtime business owner in South Florida with more than a quarter century of business ownership experience. “The creativity, energy and brilliant presentation of Sloan’s lured my wife and I in, and the ice

cream is beyond incredible. Plus, the stores are simply magical — their fantasyland atmosphere speaks to the inner child in all of us. Now, we get to spread this incredible concept.” The Olmos have acquired the development rights to build and operate Sloan’s Ice Cream stores throughout the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area, as well as in Key West. Their agreement calls for opening 10 new South Florida Sloan’s locations initially, with an opportunity to add on more units. The couple has been in business together for most of their married life. Their three adult children, David Jr., Gregory and Stephen, will help with operations of the South Florida Sloan’s locations. “This is truly a dream come true for our family,” Debra Olmo said. “My husband and I live and breathe our business ventures — we’re thrilled to be expanding a concept that brings smiles to the faces of countless of families and visitors every year. Morgan Pritchett win Zonta Club of Boca Raton’s Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship The Zonta Club of Boca Raton is part of a worldwide organization of women in business and the professions who work together to advance the status of women through volunteer work, donations and scholarships. Each year Young Women in Public Affairs scholarships are given to high school seniors who have very high grade point averages, are active in school activities and in community service. This year sixteen applications were received from local high schools. Generally, one scholarship is awarded annually. Each individual Zonta club submits their winner to the District Chairperson and the

winner from that group earns an additional scholarship. The District winners are then submitted to the International Chairperson, this year ten international scholarships were awarded to young women from around the world. The Zonta Club of Boca Raton scholarship winner for 2013 is Morgan Pritchett, she just graduated from Nova High School, she will be eighteen years old in August of this year. Morgan will be attending Florida International University and plans to earn dual degrees in Geographic Information Systems and Marketing.

Ten South Florida Teens Work to Boca Raton Native Daniel AckerRebuild Communities Affected by man Selected as Summer 2013 Hurricane Sandy Intern At The Kennedy Center

Some say they are “just teenagers,” but nearly 100 of them are traveling from around the world on June 25-27, 2013 to dedicate their time and effort to help rebuild the communities affected by Hurricane Sandy at BBYO Stand UP and Rebuild: A Teen Issue Summit on the Power of Service in New York, NY, hosted by BBYO, the world’s leading pluralistic Jewish youth movement. The Summit participants are members of BBYO’s high school leadership programs – the Aleph Zadik Aleph (AZA) for young men and the B’nai B’rith Girls (BBG) for young women – from across the United States, Canada and Bulgaria. In New York, the teens will learn about direct service and advocacy from guest speaker Steve EisenbachBudner, Executive Director of Tivnu: Building Justice. They will also attend a panel featuring those directly affected by the storm called “Sandy’s Devastation First Hand.” “As Jewish individuals, we have the responsibility to help repair our world after the destruction left by Sandy,” said Ira Dounn, BBYO’s Director of Jewish Enrichment for the Northeast states. “At BBYO Stand UP and Rebuild, teen leaders will have the opportunity to live this Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world) and to think deeply about the profound connection between Judaism and service.” On Wednesday, the teens will

spend the entire day engaging in hands-on service projects including gardening, cosmetic rebuilding in private homes, yard work and residential outdoor beautification, community beautification and assisting a local recovery group with various other projects. As a teen-led and staff supported organization, BBYO offers programming that is inspired by the interests of today’s teens. Judah Burstein, a rising senior, from Brookline, MA; Sarah Fellman, a rising senior, from Charlotte, NC; Kyle Price, a rising sophomore, from Scarsdale, NY; and Josie Roth, a rising junior, from Boca Raton, FL are the AZA and BBG members who are serving as the program coordinators and will facilitate, with staff support, sessions throughout the Summit. “Relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy are strong, but there is still so much more to be done. As Jewish teens, it is our responsibility to do everything we can to help,” said Josie Roth. As part of BBYO Stand UP, BBYO’s grassroots service, advocacy and philanthropy campaign, BBYO Stand UP and Rebuild is designed to help teens acquire the skills and resources necessary to create their own service, advocacy and philanthropy campaigns to affect positive change in their local and global community.

We Will not be Deterred, Even Through the Pain The images remain etched in my mind – two months later. They were faces of the people, captured moments after the two Boston Marathon terror blasts that registered deep confusion and shock. Every face asked the same thing: Why is this happening? There will never be a satisfactory answer to the question. President Obama has promised there will be justice. “We will get to the bottom of this,” he said. With the killing of one suspect and the capture of another, I’m still not sure we will. My deepest sympathies go out to the victims. In cowardly fashion, an act of evil has struck a soft target – a community event based on health and fitness, courage and sportsmanship, which the fluttering world flags at the finish line showed was held in the spirit of good fellowship regardless of race or religion. The two murderers who used bombs to spread their hatred knew full well the finish line carnage would be televised around the world, with the intent of spreading fear and trepidation about other events treasured by free societies, such as the looming London Marathon. The ghastly attack is a stark reminder that terror can always strike when and where we least expect it. This attack hits home for me. It’s personal. I grew up looking forward to each marathon, partly because it was Boston’s great spring holiday – Patriot’s Day. It was the day when the first battles of the War of Independence are remembered and which the city celebrates with the doubleheader of a major baseball game and the world-renowned marathon. It also was a day for family, one that called for BBQ and kite flying - if you’re a kid – a day where you and hundreds of thousands of people meet on one accord. Instead it was stained with the blood of so many innocents, and all because someone, somewhere, believed that killing others is an effective way of drawing attention to their otherwise neglected cause. What kind of evil is it that lies behind such acts? What warped version of reality takes over when someone plants bombs in places where thousands of people must

pass and does so in the full expectation that many will be killed and dreadfully maimed? What cause could possibly be elevated, what problem cured, by such lunacy? Sadly, there are millions of people who live each day with the fear of random attacks: in Iraq, for example, where dozens of car bombings just last month left 50 people dead and more than 300 injured; or in Pakistan, where a bomb in a passenger bus killed nine a few days later; or in Nigeria, where dozens were killed two months ago when bombs exploded at a major bus station. Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, there have been dozens of tragedies around the world – notably in Bali, Madrid, London and Mumbai. Many have been killed and injured, and we have shared the pain and anxiety of witnessing images of horror in nations we regard as friends. Mercifully, since September 11 changed the world, our beloved country has been free of such devastation until now. This has perhaps lulled some into a sense of security, although our freedom from terror here at home has been more by good management than good luck. While not all investigations are made public, I know that our law enforcement officials have foiled several plots by extremists looking to launch horrendous terror attacks on Americans. So while we reflect on the trauma unleashed in my beloved hometown, we should also give thanks to the largely unsung work of counter-terrorism forces that have prevented far worse here at home. The Boston Marathon outrage will test the resolve of the United States – and of all free nations. Locally, there have been some rumblings as to the fate of public events. Awful though it was, cancelling other community gatherings would be a win for terrorism, whatever its origins. While prudent precautions are common sense, surrendering our way of life to fear is not an option. Boston now stands as another grim reminder of the political maxim uttered by many a democratic leader who knows liberty cannot be taken for granted: “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance”. www.bocaratontribune.com

Competition, Integrity and Compassion By: Rick Boxx When we talk about competition in business, typically we are thinking in terms of trying to achieve an advantage over our competitors – whether through the products or services we offer, customer service, or other factors that could enable us to increase market share. And whenever a circumstance presents itself that could enable us to gain a competitive advantage, we know it would be wise to grab it. However, a friend of mine, Cliff Jones, offers a very different perspective on competition and the practice of capitalizing on a competitor’s misfortune. In his book, Winning through Integrity, Cliff included a story about his friend, Robert Ingram, who owned two radio stations, one that specialized in classical music. Mr. Ingram had a monopoly on

classical music radio programming in his city until a new competitor arrived. The competitor’s station presented similar programming, threatening to put a significant dent in the advertising sales and revenue generated by Mr. Ingram’s station. One day severe winds blew down the transmitting tower of the rival station. Many people in Mr. Ingram’s situation might have celebrated the competitor’s misfortune. However, he chose a very different approach. Instead of waiting for his opponent to fail because he was no longer able to broadcast, Mr. Ingram sent the chief engineer of his own company to get the competitor’s station up and running again. When someone asked why he would do such a thing, knowing that choosing not to do anything likely would have resulted in eliminating the competitor, Mr. Ingram’s reply

was simple and honest: “I had what he needed to survive.” In the Bible’s New Testament, we find this profound admonition: “If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself,’ you are doing right” (James 2:8). In Mr. Ingram’s case, he could have used the competitor’s problem for his own advantage. But he also realized that, had the circumstances been reversed, he would have appreciated receiving such assistance himself. Too often in today’s demanding, high-pressure, bottom line-oriented business environment, we are willing to do anything to secure an important sale, get a signature on a contract, or somehow undermine those competing with us. The thought of offering help to them in a desperate time of need rarely occurs. But if we are committed to

conducting business with integrity – and compassion – concentrating on the best interests of those we encounter during the course of a typical workday, perhaps a radical change in our thinking is necessary. Another New Testament passage tells us, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). This might sound difficult, because it is. We can’t be certain of the next sale, or of finalizing the next deal. But if integrity is our priority, we know what to do – even when it is difficult. Will you do the right thing, even if it is for the benefit of a competitor? Until next week!

Hospitality Can Be Your Daily Experience! A hospitable heart must always precede a hospitable action. You don’t need to open the doors of your house to anyone, including strangers, but it’s necessary to have the doors of your heart noticeably ready to open to other fellow humans! In fact, I have offered to some of my audiences the challenge: “Be a hospitality center wherever you are, where others can approach you without fear, with significant benefits for them, and for yourself as well.” Indeed, there’s nothing good anyone ever does unto others which does not reward that individual even more than the immediate beneficiary

of a kind gesture! If you are to make hospitality a daily experience, you need to manifest a welcoming disposition to all you meet. Not just your words but your countenance must convey that reality. Most people can detect ‘yes faces” and “no faces,” and it is to the former that others gravitate. As social creatures, many humans experience lonely days on account of the lack of direct personal contact with fellow humans. It’s not sufficient to meet the grocer, to greet the postman, to wave to a neighbor, or momentarily to open the house doors to a repair man.

Most humans are eager for greater depth in their daily communication with people and this is possible to be restored to the extent that one recognizes the significance of hospitality, whereby they can meaningfully connect for occasional, or even regular, exchanges on issues of greater meaning and depth. Although sometimes the initiative can come from another, unto whom you graciously respond, you also need to learn how to approach people and see if gradually a meaningful acquaintance can be established. Persons need whatever you provide, as you also may lack what another

can offer, in terms of friendly interactions. While it is true that much hospitality occurs within a home which invites others in, it can be just as effective when the only doors open are those of your heart, wherever you may be, in welcoming what others have to say and in joyfully responding with what you are capable of offering. Every single day we are surrounded by such opportunities, and its true beneficiaries are those who cautiously, but also decisively, take rightful advantage of them. The benefits are mutual, and often enormous!

“Booster Bags” Bandits Busted After Stealing More than $4,000 Worth of Merchandise, Police say

By Fred Hamilton Authorities arrested five people from Miramar and Miami-Dade County in two separate incidents recently on shoplifting-related charges. The arrests came on Thursday, July 27 outside the Town Center at Boca Raton. While patrolling the mall parking lot, officers assigned to the Tactical Team saw a rented Nissan Altima with very dark tinted windows. They followed the car and stopped it after the driver did not signal to make a lane change, police said. Police became suspicious because burglars and thieves have been renting cars with dark tints and driving to their target destinations in the city to commit crimes, police said. An officer approached and smelled marijuana on the driver, which gave them the right to search the car and occupants, police said Police found marijuana. But they also found 138 articles of clothing worth $4,272.14 from various stores. They also found a booster bag, which is a bag lined with aluminum foil and used for shoplifting. The bags are designed to defeat the alarm systems at the door, authorities said. In the trunk were 18 pairs of shorts and 22 shirts from Aeropostal; nine dresses, 13 shirts and 12 pairs of shorts from Express; 10 shirts and eight pairs of pants from Hot Topic; one necklace, nine dresses, six shirts and five pairs of leggings from Rue 21; five pairs of leggings and 24 pairs of jumpers from Charlotte Russ. They also told police that they came to the mall to shoplift from American Apparel. The driver of the car, Lashonda Shaprell Ryland of Miami, told police she shoplifted the merchandise, according to the Boca Raton police arrest report.

The other occupants of the car collectively said the clothing was for their family and was taken from other malls, police said. Police charged Ryland and the other occupants, Nia Malika Bell, 38, and Ray Carr, 50, both of Miami, with possession/use of anti-shoplifting counter measures and retail theft with others distracting merchants. They also charged Carr with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and giving a false name upon arrest. The second arrest occurred not long after in the same parking lot as other officers with the specialized unit saw a man and a woman with a large bag wrapped in duct tape. The pair then got into their car and began leaving the shopping center but officers stopped the driver, Gerald Livingston Allen, 23, when he failed to signal before making a lane change. Allen, 23, was driving with a suspended license from two years ago, police said. While questioning Allen and his passenger, Letha Sahanna Young, 29, officers saw marijuana and rolling papers in the car. They searched the car and found a “booster bag” as well as numerous pieces of merchandise from Pac Sun and Express valued at $477.87, police said. Police charged both Allen and Young - both of Miramar with retail theft in concert with another. They also charged Allen with operating a vehicle with a suspended license and Young with possession/use of anti-shoplifting counter measures. Before they entered the store, an officer had noticed Young stuffing a large bag wrapped in duct tape — another suspected booster bag — into her purse before heading into the mall. Young's purse appeared "empty and flat" when she went into the mall but was "round and full" when she and Allen exited.

Woman arrested for opening fraudulent accounts with stolen identities

W h i l e conducting surveillance in the area of Glades Road and I-95, members of the Boca Raton Police Tactical Team observed a car Jazmine Murph with Tennessee plates commit a traffic violation. After stopping the vehicle, officers saw marijuana in plain sight. The occupants, two females and a male juvenile, were removed from the car and a search was conducted. In addition to the marijuana, officers found a purse, which contained Bloomingdales credit account receipt with a $3,000 credit limit, a Macy’s credit account receipt with a $1,200 limit, a Justice credit account receipt for $1,000 with 3 new Justice gift cards totaling $870. All were opened on June 25th in the name of Janet Bamford. Also in the vehicle was a piece of paper with the name, date of birth and social security number for William Logie, along with a Kohl’s credit card receipt for $1,000 opened on June 20th. A search of the front passenger, Jazmine Murph, produced a Florida driver’s license with her picture, but with the personal information of

Janet Bamford. A further search of the car turned up three handbags and a woman’s wallet in the trunk. A receipt in the bag indicated they were purchased with the line of credit just opened at Bloomingdales in Bamford’s name for a total of $1,824.26. A Justice bag and a receipt for items purchased totaling nearly $1,000 were also located. Both Bamford and Logie were contacted and said their identities had been stolen. They had reported the crimes in the past. During Precious Memory questioning, Jackson Murph admitted to officers that she was the one who opened the accounts. As a result Jazmine Murph was charged with Grand Theft, Creating, Possessing & Use of Fictitious Personal ID, Attempt to use ID of another Person without consent, Fraudulent use of a Credit Card and Possession of Marijuana. The driver of the car, Precious Jackson and the male juvenile were charged with Possession of Marijuana.

Fatal Car Crash Killed a Woman In Jog Road Monday Morning

BOCA RATON – A woman speeding out of Mizner Preserve on Jog Road, just over the Boca/ Delray line, was killed Monday morning in a horrific three car crash. Investigators say Fran Abel, 57, was speeding in her 2009 Audi as she jetted from Mizner Preserve across Jog Road. She slammed into a vehicle that was traveling north on Jog which forced that car

into a spin. That vehicle hit a tree, then stopped in the street. A third vehicle — whose driver presumably had no idea that Abel was going to rocket out of the community — couldn’t stop and ended up hitting the driver’s door. Vintage Rock and Roll Came to Florida Atlantic University on July 4th

All-American vintage rock and roll came to Florida Atlantic University on July 4th and baby boomers came out in force to soak it all in. Sixties superstars Jay & the Americans were the main attraction at the concert which took place in the Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium on the University’s Boca campus. It was billed as a luxury alternative to more traditional outdoor Independence Day festivities centered on fireworks displays and local talent. The evening’s headliners spend more than half the year on the road, singing their hits, such as “Only in America”, “Come a Little Bit Closer” and “This Magic Moment” at festivals and concert events. Featuring three original members from their heyday on the Billboard charts, the group covered all of their dozen-plus hits in addition to peppering the show with covers and stories of their work with other artists. of Jay & the Americans were the first to discover and produce Steely Dan, for example. Jay & the Americans were the first to chart a Neil Diamond composition. And the group made no secret of their evolution involving not one, not two, but three Jays. Jay Reincke, who has fronted the group since their re-formation seven years ago, was in fine voice this night and made re-creating the Americans’ more operatic cuts, such as “Cara Mia”, seem like a walk in the park. “The third Jay was extraordinary,” remarked Deby Goldfarb of Stepping Out Florida, who had brought a group of more than twenty single men and women to the show. The original Americans kept up with their younger counterpart, keeping the audience engaged and carrying on routines that must come naturally, considering most met when they were still in their teens. Stan Zizka and the Del-

Satins opened the show and showed first-time revelers why they were back by popular demand, having played the same theater just 6 months earlier. Although some may have come expecting to hear little more than the songs the group recorded with Dion such as “Runaround Sue” and “The Wanderer”, the Del-Satins wowed the crowd with a variety of classics such as “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (a show-stopper) and a medley of patriotic tunes culminating in “Livin’ in America”. Zizka, just past his 70th birthday, roused the spirit of James Brown for the latter, cutting up and dancing around the 60-some-oddfoot apron of the stage like an entertainer half his age. It was tough to decide whether to focus on his wild comedic facial expressions or his feet which seemed to have a life of their own. Original DelSatins Tommy Ferrara and Les Cauchi were also spotlighted as was

Edie Van Buren, who delivered the Pointer Sisters’ “I’m So Excited” like she meant it. The show was the latest in the “Pop, Rock & Doo Wopp Live” series produced by Joe Mirrione and Tony Brocco, area residents who also delivered the “Jazz, Bossa & Blues Live!” series and “Moonlight Serenade” big band events to Boca. Sandy Deanne, founding member of Jay & the Americans, was impressed with the dynamic duo’s efforts on the fourth. “Never have I seen so much thought and caring for both the fans and performers go into presenting a show,” gushed Yaguda. “That’s high praise, coming from a 50-year industry veteran who was also the Music Supervisor for Beatlemania on Broadway”, responded Mirrione, upon hearing the commentary. “But we don’t let it go to our heads. Despicable Me 2” Best-Suited for Children

By Skip Sheffield “Despicable Me 2” is a sequel strictly for the kiddies. The original “Despicable Me” was funny and clever, turning the tables on the traditional movie bad-guy role. That former bad guy is Gru, voiced by Steve Carrell. How bad was Gru? He tried to steal the moon in the first movie, but in a manner of speaking he saw the light and became a good guy, adopting three orphaned girls. All three of the original girls have returned to voice their parts of Margo (Miranda Cosgrave), the eldest; tomboy Edith (Dana Gaier) the middle child and Agnes (Elsie Fisher), the youngest. As the story opens we see Gru is drag in a futile attempt to play a fairy princess when the real one

was a no-show. Being a single dad is not nearly as interesting as being a villain, so although the same French directors (Pierre Coffin and Chris Reanaud) and writers (Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul) returned to work on the sequel, the idea is no longer as fresh or unusual. According to my sources Al Pacino was originally cast to voice a new villain, Eduardo. stepped into the dual role of Pacino dropped out over creative Eduardo, owner of a Mexican differences and Benjamin Bratt restaurant and his alter ego El Macho, a Latino super-villain. There are various subplots involving lovelorn Gru and his lady friend Lucy (Kristen Wiig) an obnoxious date with Shannon (Kristen Schaal) and Margo and her boyfriend Antonio (Moises Arias) who just so happens to be Eduardo’s son. Also returning is Russell Brand as Gru best villain buddy, Dr. Nefario, but even he seems disillusioned with his new goodguy role making terrible-tasting jelly. “I miss being evil,” he says wistfully. comedy are Gru’s legions of cute yellow “minions,” who are there to serve Gru’s every command. There is a funny twist in which an evil plot is hatched to turn the giggling minions into snarling purple monsters, but it is not followed through. Indeed the minions have become so important they will have their own movie in the next sequel, scheduled for release in December, 2014. Make sure you stick around for the final credits and you will see some amusing “auditions” for the next movie. These computer-animated movies take a lot of time to make. Three stars Boca Life & Arts

The flatbread listing of 3 standards including our favorite artichoke and goat cheese as well as grilled garlic pesto chicken and a plum tomato. New additions of steak and blue cheese, then spicy chipotle shrimp were both fine tasting. Appetizers now include a ahi tuna tartare, cool and smooth with a wasabi-avocado mousse and mango chutney. Also there is a hummus offering of both roasted red pepper and minted edamame styles – excellent!! The standards are spicy chicken relleno, goat cheese ravioli, lump crab and roasted shrimp with spinach stuffed mushrooms and grilled chipotle spiced chicken skewers. Five small salads are listed in addition to four entrée salads – the new version is a delicious vegetarian tasting salad with triple grain quinoa, cedar roasted tofu, mango chutney, soft tacos and summer vegetables – excellent tastings. The fish and seafood roster still list the mesquite – grilled garlic shrimp, the caramelized grilled sea scallops, cedar plank roasted salmon and – our favorite –grilled boneless rainbow trout with baby carrots, parsley roasted potatoes and grilled lemon. The new addition is grilled jumbo shrimp cavatappi pasta with caramelized garlic, roasted yellow peppers, summer tomatoes and

broccolini – unfortunately bland shrimp and pasta, not our choice. Poultry and meat heading lists old favorite grilled kona-crusted lamb t-bone chops, all natural BBQ chicken and oak-grilled filet mignon…a new 13 ounce bone-in strip steak, done medium and tender/juicy- perfect! New item turkey skewers with grilled vegetables – farro Hoppin’ John with a zinfandel BBQ glaze – a fine choice. Do Not Be Reluctant to Show Mercy In real fellowship – a friendship or relationship in which mutual support is extended – people experience mercy. Fellowship is a place of grace, where mistakes are not rubbed in with constant reminders, but rubbed out and forgiven. Fellowship happens when mercy wins over justice. Everyone needs mercy, because we all stumble and fall, and usually require help getting back on track. Because of this, we need to be willing to offer mercy to each other – and be equally willing to receive it from one another. You cannot have fellowship, whether in the workplace, a community organization or a family, without forgiveness because bitterness and resentment always destroy fellowship. Sometimes we hurt each other intentionally and sometimes unintentionally; either way, it takes massive amounts of mercy and grace to create and maintain fellowship. The Bible offers this wise admonition: “You must make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others” (Colossians 3:13). The mercy God shows to us should serve as the motivation for us to show mercy to others, regardless of the circumstances. Whenever you find yourself being hurt by someone else, you have a choice to make: Will I use my energy and emotions for retaliation – or for resolution? You cannot do both.

Many people are reluctant to show mercy because they fail to understand the difference between trust and forgiveness. Forgiveness is letting go of the past. Trust, however, has to do with future behavior. Forgiveness must be immediate, regardless of whether a person asks for it. Trust must be earned and rebuilt over time. Trust requires a track record. If someone hurts you repeatedly, you are commanded by God to forgive them instantly, for your own benefit as well as the other person. Lack of forgiveness can become an emotional cancer, a lingering, lethal source of bitterness. However, you are not expected to immediately trust the person that has hurt you – and you are not expected to continue allowing them to hurt you. When people inflict pain in your life, they must prove to have changed over time before they can regain your trust. One of the best places for restoring trust is within the supportive context of a small group that can provide both encouragement and accountability. But while you are giving people time to make positive changes, your first step should be to extend forgiveness, independent of whatever remedial action they choose to take. Consider this insight from the Scriptures: “When people sin, you should forgive and comfort them, so they won’t give up in despair” (2 Corinthians 2:7).

Americans, Our Enimies? No the real Americans are not our enemies. Us every day Joes who have always gone to work, every day and done the best we could for our wives, husbands and kids. Those who truly love this country love it more than God, because we know that it is real and that is has given us opportunities which few people on this planet can enjoy. Who are those American enemies you ask; those who would bring us down so that we can cow tow to foreign masters with strange names, and colors and experiences unlike our home. No, I don’t think so. They may be different, but they would love to have our lives, and opportunities, and our very homes, not to take away but to earn. They want to be us, and pay the price that we do. Over the last ten years, and perhaps before, our enemies have shown their stripes from every corner of our fair land. Every so often they beg for your vote, but then go on to Washington where they caucus with their own separate tribes and, year after year, like lemmings follow one

another over partisan cliffs. They daily trash day the magic of their own predecessors who knew that while “Party” loyalty is important loyalty to the best interests of all citizens is a far, far better dream. We have no more leaders. Our enemies in the Senate and the Congress draw their opinions from religious leaders, who constitutionally have no power or from the fringe groups of leftists or Tea Party acolytes who would not know a compromise as a better way if it would bite them on the butt. In a comic strip of yesterday swamp buddy “Pogo” would often say, “We have met the Enemy, and they are US!!!” I wish that it was so today because the “US” today would do a better job of running this country that the carpetbaggers and scalawags in the Nation’s Capital today who pray to their “Party” banners while allowing the United States to fail by the weight of their self interest. Have a Happy 4th, God Bless America and Americans, but save us from our elected representatives.

FAU Board of Trustees Names Dennis Crudele Interim President Florida Atlantic University’s Board of Trustees today named Dennis Crudele as Interim President to succeed Mary Jane Saunders, pending confirmation by the Florida Board of Governors. Crudele, a longtime FAU administrator, was named acting president on May 15, when Saunders resigned as FAU’s sixth president. “I’m pleased to be able to continue the progress we’ve already made in fostering a more responsive and transparent environment here at FAU,” said Crudele. “I pledge to continue making changes where they are needed in order to create a clean slate for the new president to inherit.” Prior to his role as acting president, Crudele was FAU’s senior vice president for financial affairs, where he oversaw many departments and functions of the university, including human resources, the FAU Police Department, the university budget office, business services, the university controller, the purchasing department, administrative technology support services and business/auxiliary services. He also was executive director of the FAU Finance Corporation and he served as liaison to the Audit and Finance Committee of the FAU Board of Trustees. Crudele came to FAU in 1987 as director of purchasing. Over the course of 26 years, he rose steadily through the ranks, serving successively as assistant vice

president for administration and finance, assistant vice president of operations management in the Division of Student Affairs, associate vice president for financial affairs and acting vice president for financial affairs. In 2010 he was named senior vice president for financial affairs, overseeing an operating budget of $587 million. He has played a major role in the university’s efforts to deal with challenges generated by repeated deep cuts in state funding, totaling $79 million over six years. Crudele came to FAU from the governing body for the state university system, the Florida Board of Regents, which in 2003 became the Board of Governors. During his six years at the Board of Regents he held a number of positions, including office operations supervisor of business and financial services and purchasing agent. His service on the Board allowed him to gain system-wide knowledge of the business/financial side of university operations. “FAU is in good hands with Dennis Crudele, as we’ve already seen during his six weeks as acting president,” said Anthony Barbar, chair of FAU’s Board of Trustees. “He has my full support, as well as that of my fellow trustees. We know he will continue to serve as a strong, thoughtful and decisive leader during our search for a permanent president.” Crudele has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida State University.

FAU Names Barbara Witte as Director of Gift Planning BOCA RATON – Florida Atlantic University’s Division of Community Engagement recently named Barbara Witte as its director of gift planning. Witte will work with Executive Director David Rutherford to assist donors who are interested in supporting FAU’s academic, research and scholarship programs through deferred giving. Strikers conclude Spring with road loss against Rowdies The Fort Lauderdale Strikers fell in the finale of the NASL's Spring season 4-0 against the rival Tampa Bay Rowdies on Thursday night in front of 5,034 fans at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla. Two goals in each half propelled the Rowdies to the win. The Strikers Mark Anderson returned from injury to play a full 90 minutes in the match. "We are obviously very disappointed. I think the early goal caused us to lose some confidence and we were not able to recover," said Strikers' interim head coach Ricardo Lopes. "In the second half we were able to use the counter attack to generate some good chances, but their keeper made some good saves." In the 20th minute forward Georgi Hristov ran down the Strikers’ right flank and played a through ball to Keith Savage who's shot from inside the 18 yard box put the Rowdies up 1-0. The Strikers' Hosman Ramos fired a shot toward Rowdies' goalkeeper Diego Restrepo in the 28th minute, which

he successfully blocked away. Savage’s second goal came when Luke Mulholland played the ball into the box which Strikers' goalkeeper Matt Glaeser attempted to punch away. Glaeser's attempt was off and Savage was able to head the ball into the net from eight yards away for his third goal of the season. The second half began with an excellent chance as Strikers' left back Stephane Guillaume hit a cross come shot from 35 yards away which caromed off the Rowdies' crossbar and was cleared away by defender Jordan Gafa. The Rowdies extended their lead in the 52nd minute when defender Jay Needham headed in a Luke Mulholland corner kick. The Rowdies then made it 4-0 when Hristov played a through ball to forward Mike Ambersley who beat Glaeser one-on-one. The Strikers' final chance came in the 70th minute when Jemal Johnson was free from 10 yards away but Restrepo came out and blocked Johnson’s shot.

Atlanta Silverbacks Win 2013 NASL Spring Championship; Will Host Soccer Bowl

By: Pedro Heizer This year the Fourth of July sure had its share of fireworks. Not only in the skies, but also on the soccer pitch. From Major League Soccer, to the North American Soccer League, teams put on a show for their fans. In the NASL, Independence Day marked the date of the final game of the Spring Championship Season, and three teams, the San Antonio Scorpions, the Carolina Railhawks, and the Atlanta Silverbacks all were in contention for the Spring Championship. The Carolina Railhawks had the best chance of winning the tittle since a win would have made them untouchable at the top of the standings with 23 points. For the San Antonio Scorpions, they needed to beat the Railhawks by three goals and would have also needed help from Minnesota United FC to defeat the Atlanta Silverbacks. The Silverbacks had the most improbable of scenarios; not only did they need to defeat Minnesota United FC in Minnesota, but they also needed Carolina to lose to the Scorpions, and they needed to overcome a goal difference of four that was in Carolina’s favor. Wouldn’t you know it, the

soccer gods smiled upon Atlanta on Independence Day. The Scorpions defeated the Railhawks 2-0, and all the Silverbacks needed to do was defeat Minnesota by two, which they did. What a fantastic turnaround by Eric Wynalda and the Silverbacks. From last place just one season ago, and all the entire soccer community doubting, to NASL Spring Champions. “I am so proud of these guys and how they played,” said Silverbacks coach Brian Haynes who has turned around Atlanta’s fortunes after they finished one place of the bottom of the 2012 NASL standings. “We did what we had to do so I am so proud of the boys who gave a great effort against a good team and we took our chances well.” As the Spring Champions, the Silverbacks have earned the right host the 2013 Soccer Bowl at Atlanta Silverbacks Park versus the Champion of the 2013 NASL Fall Season. The NASL will kick off the 2013 Fall Championship Season on August 3rd when the Fort Lauderdale Strikers travel to New York to renew their rivalry with the New York Cosmos.

HEAT Use Mario Chalmers’ Team Option By: Pedro Heizer In a quest to “three-peat”, Pat Riley and the Miami HEAT will do everything they can to keep the core of their championship winning team together. Earlier today in Miami, Pat Riley told the media that the twotime defending NBA champions will exercise their option to bring Mario Chalmers back for the 20132014 season. The Heat had a $4 million team option on Chalmers for next season, and in a move that isn’t particularly surprising, they opted in Wednesday and have secured the two-time NBA Champion for another year. In the conference, Riley also indicated that the Heat aren’t expected to amnesty Mike Miller, despite the fact that he’s set to make $6 million next year. Chalmers, who was drafted in

2008 alongside Michael Beasley, has spent his entire career with the Heat since being acquired in a draft night deal with Minnesota after winning that year’s national championship with Kansas. As a rookie, Chalmers started and averaged 10 points per game. The 27-year-old has been Miami’s starting point guard for the majority of his career. This season, Chalmers hit a career best 40.9 percent and had some great shooting nights in the playoffs, notably a 20-point effort where he nailed four of five threes in a 103-100 win in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. Chalmers’ ability to hit spotup three-pointers has increased drastically since his rookie season which makes him more valuable to a HEAT squad which had many sharpshooters to punish teams who leave them open.

Jones and Lewis Exercise Player Options For The 2013-14 Season By: Pedro Heizer James Jones and Rashard Lewis have both exercised their player options for the 2013-14 season earlier today. Not as if this was anything surprising. Neither player received much playing time this season, Jones and Lewis averaged 3.7 and 4.3 minutes per game respectfully during the 2013 NBA playoffs, but both may become bigger parts of the rotation with the possible amnesty of Mike Miller. Ray Allen also has a player option for next year, Mario Chalmers has team option for next season and the HEAT have until Sunday to exercise the $4 million option. Miami has three players who will become unrestricted free agents come July 1, Chris Andersen, Jarvis Varnado and Juwan Howard. Below is the official release by the Miami HEAT: MIAMI, June 25 – The Miami HEAT announced today that both forward James Jones and forward Rashard Lewis have exercised their player options for the 2013-14 season. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Jones, a 10-year NBA veteran, appeared in 38 games with the HEAT this season, and has earned Sports

postseason berths in each of his five seasons with Miami, including two NBA Championships. The Miami native has appeared in 246 career games with the HEAT, averaging 4.2 points and 1.4 rebounds while shooting 39.8 percent from threepoint range. He hit a career-high 123 three-point field goals during the 2010-11 season while capturing the 2011 NBA Three-Point Shootout title. Jones originally signed with the HEAT as a free agent on July 9, 2008. Lewis, a 15-year NBA veteran, appeared in 55 games (nine starts) with the HEAT this season averaging 5.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 14.4 minutes while shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three-point range. He scored in double-figures 13 times this season, including a season-high 19 points twice, first vs. Boston on April 12 and then at Cleveland on April 15. He appeared in 11 postseason games during Miami’s championship run this season totaling 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks while shooting 40 percent from the field in 47 minutes of action. Boca Raton Product, Jozy Altidore Joins Sunderland On 4-Year Deal

By: Pedro Heizer On Tuesday afternoon Sunderland announced the signing of USMNT striker Jozy Altidore to a four-year deal. The transfer fee is rumored to be £8.5million (around $13 million). Altidore, 23, is Sunderland’s sixth summer signing and has been brought in to boost Paolo Di Canio’s attacking options, with the club heavily reliant on the goals of Steven Fletcher last season. “I’m thrilled to be here,” Altidore told Sunderland’s official website. “It’s a fantastic club, I’m really excited about this season and I’m excited to be a part of it.” According to a statement on the club website, Altidore is set to join head coach Paolo Di Canio and his

new team mates in Italy for training camp on Tuesday. In the 2009-10 season, Altidore played in the Premier League with Hull City, while he was on loan from Villarreal. While at Hull City, Altidore only found the back of the net once. However, in 2011 Altidore joined AZ Alkmaar and had one of the best seasons by an American overseas, scoring 38 goals in 67 appearances. While many question Altidore’s return to the English Premier League, I see this as a huge opportunity for Altidore to redeem himself with fans of the EPL. Altidore is older, wiser, and more skillful today than he was back in the 2009 season, expect the US start to shine in Sunderland.

Miami To Host Guinness International Champions Cup Finals By: Pedro Heizer Stephen Ross might have been unsuccessful in bringing the Super Bowl back to Miami, but he is bringing the next best thing, the Guinness International Champions Cup. The ICC, which will match up some of soccer’s most storied franchises, will in have its championship game here in Miami on August 7. Some of the biggest clubs in the world will take part in the tournament including, Chelsea, A.C. Milan, Valencia, Everton, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus, and the back-to-back MLS Cup Champions Los Angeles Galaxy. Together the eight teams have won 120 league titles, and 20 European Champions league trophies. Real Madrid leads with 32 La Liga titles in Spain. The tournament also will feature 35 of the top 100 players in the world. Relevent Sports, whose parent company RSE Ventures is owned by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, brings the excitement and intensity of international soccer to the United States by showcasing the best clubs in the world through premier tournaments and events. Relevent Sports goes beyond the game and provides an innovative approach to building international soccer presence by utilizing brand development, grassroots planning, corporate sponsors, international touring and philanthropic initiatives for the soccer organizations. Charlie Stillitano, former general manager of the New York/ New Jersey MetroStars, and venue director for Giants Stadium during the 1994 World Cup, is currently the CEO of Relevent Sports and one of the people who are very close to this project. “Stephen Ross had the idea of creating a tournament and having all the teams come down to Miami to play the final,” said Stillitano. “He [Ross] sees Miami’s changing face and the cultural shift, he realizes that in many cases their first love is soccer.” Although South Florida has not had a Major League Soccer franchise since 2001 when the Miami Fusion called it quits, the area is no stranger to big marquee soccer matches; most recently, 36,535 fans filled Sun Life Stadium as they witnessed Spain and Haiti clash on June 8th.

Prior to the ICC, the World Football Challenge tried to do the same type of tournament and it was a huge success. Over 60,000 fans packed stadiums to watch powerhouses Chelsea, America, Inter Millan, and A.C. Millan clash. However, with a win or go home feel to it, teams coming to the United States trying to get ready for preseason didn’t appreciate the idea of coming to play a game and going back. “The biggest challenge we found when creating the ICC was the schedule,” says Stillitano. “What we found is that as teams [from Europe] don’t want to come and just play friendly matches. They want to compete.” The ICC is a very condensed tournament; on one side of the bracket, the first-round matches are Juventus vs. Everton at AT&T Park on July 31 and Real Madrid vs. the Galaxy at University of Phoenix Stadium on Aug. 1. The other side has AC Milan vs. Valencia on July 27 at Estadio Mestalla in Spain and Chelsea vs. Inter Milan on Aug. 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Semifinal matches are at Aug. 3 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Aug. 4. Seventh and fifth-place matches will be played on Aug, 6, while the third-place and championship matches will be played on Aug. 7. “With the knockout stage, we tried to keep a format that is really easy for fans to understand,” said Stillitano. The one team that might be new to some soccer fans is the Los Angeles Galaxy, and despite being the back-to-back defending MLS Cup champions, some question the move to include the MLS franchise. “Los Angeles is a very recognizable team,” says Stillitano. “We specifically chose the Galaxy to represent MLS; we want them to showcase their talents.” With the Galaxy in midseason form, and the European powerhouses about to begin their pre-season, don’t count the Los Angeles Galaxy our just yet; they might surprise many of you. “When these calibers of clubs get together in these types of stadiums, there really isn’t a friendly match,” says Stillitano. “All eight of these teams will compete to become the champions.” July 5, through July 17, 2013
