The top was down on the vehicle but the windows were in the up position. All the items were left in plain view. There is no suspect information.

Three ‘stars’ added to Boca’s Walk of Recognition The new stars are for Alyce Erickson, Mary and Harold Perper and Jamie Snyder, who have demonstrated a significant longterm commitment to serving in the interest of Boca Raton and have enriched the lives of our citizens.

Alyce Erickson has immersed herself in the Boca Raton community since the early 1980s. Many organizations have benefited from her involvement and leadership: the Children’s Museum, Lynn University, American Red Cross, Florida Symphonic Pops, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Florida Atlantic University and the National Society of Arts and Letters, for which she started the Distinguished Young Artist Award for a worthy student in the arts. In 2009, she was awarded the Junior League of Boca Raton Woman Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mary and Harold Perper have supported numerous charitable organizations throughout Boca Raton.

Mary Perper is a longtime hospital volunteer and Harold serves on the Boca Raton Museum of Art Foundation Board, and they continue to make donations to the hospital and museum. Recently the Perpers funded the “mildly ill clinic” at Florence Fuller Child Development Center; they provide continuous support of Hospice by the Sea, and they have been longtime friends and benefactors of Lynn University.

Jamie Snyder is known primarily for her leadership and vision for down-

town redevelopment in the 1980s and early 1990s.

As chairman of the Boca Raton Community Redevelopment Agency, her vision shaped downtown as we know it. She led the redevelopment of Sanborn Square, the adoption of the Beautification Plan in the mid-1980s, new design guidelines in the late 1980s, and she was the driving force behind the creation of Mizner Park.

In addition, Jamie was a founding member and served as president of the Boca Raton Historical Society and continues as an honorary board member.

She is also a member of the Junior League of Boca Raton and was awarded Woman Volunteer of the Year in 1990.

Instituted in 1997, the Walk of Recognition award has been presented to 70 citizens of the community. Each inductee’s name is inscribed in a black granite plaque, which is set into a commemorative monument featuring the mission of the program.

The plaques are underwritten by Marta Batmasian as part of her commitment to the community.

The Boca Raton Historical Society (BRHS) is a non-profit membership organization, dedicated to collecting, preserving, and presenting information relevant to the past and evolving history of Boca Raton, and to maintaining a visible role in education and advocacy of historic preservation.

First, SB 2086, a broad reaching elections bill seeks to disenfranchise voters by significantly reducing early voting days, adding bureaucratic pitfalls for those with frequent address changes

I filed two amendments (#’s 527862, 196564) to remove the injection of politics into the judicial election process and to set Florida’s presidential primary date within the legal time period to ensure Florida remains relevant during presidential elections.

In addition, I successfully fought initiatives to split the state’s Supreme Court and to remove Supreme Court review of ballot language that could change the constitution. The constitution, the balance of power, and the right to vote, are all sacred aspects of our democracy. As your state senator, I was proud to fight to protect our democracy and the rights of our citizens.

I am committed to developing a sustainable future for South Florida, while always having a robust respect for our environment, culture, and history. Since January 2011, the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office has received 13 complaints involving lottery scams, according to PBSO spokeswoman Teri Barbera.

Most cases are occurring in the suburban West Palm Beach area.

She said the majority of victims are elderly or of Hispanic ethnicity. Hispanic victims are being approached by strangers in parking lots and asked to help redeem a winning lotto ticket because the stranger is not a U.S. citizen.

The victim is asked to supply “good faith money” and told they will be reimbursed when the ticket is cashed.

Another scenario involves elderly victims being contacted by telephone. The con-artist will tell the victim they have won a prize (lottery/sweepstakes) and should send money to cover the taxes. In three recent cases the caller asked that the money to be sent to Jamaica.

Barbera said anyone approached by a stranger asking for money to help cash in a winning lottery ticket should immediately call the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office at 561-688-3400.

Hot water faucets will be disappearing from county facilities in money-saving move

You can start scraping the H’s off the faucets in most Palm Beach County facilities.

District 4 County Commissioner Steven Abrams announced that Palm Beach County has discontinued hot water usage in most of its facilities - including his own office in the South County Administrative Complex. The shutdown includes some 135 hot wa-

ter heaters.

“It may seem like a drop in the bucket, but it all adds up,” said Abrams. “The county is sometimes accused of getting into hot water, but now we’re getting out of hot water while saving taxpayers’ money,” he added.

The county will achieve an immediate savings from the actual energy costs of the heater in addition to the maintenance, repair and replacement, said Abrams.

In addition, it will avoid water damage from periodic system failures, which the county experiences, according to the county’s Facilities Development and Operations Department.

The majority of savings will be in the cost of replacing these units, which were old and needed immediate replacement. With 135 heaters countywide being taken off line, the initial annual savings is estimated to be $162,000, said Commissioner Abrams.

Also, he said, additional savings will be realized by not using these water heaters when considering the damage they create when they inevitably fail, causing hundreds of gallons of water to leak into the space where they are located. This results in a costly cleanup.

“For example, in December 2009, there was a system failure in the West Palm Beach Courthouse which cost over $26,000 and interrupted service for several days.”

West Boca accident critically injures man who jumped on car BOCA RATON - The Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s office said a man who allegedly jumped on the hood of a moving car, then fell off, was knocked unconscious and suffered critical injuries about 3:15 p.m. May 18.

The PBSO report identified the injured party as Jorge M. Fuentes, 18, of 9725 SW 2nd Street, Boca Raton. He was transported to Delray Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

The report says Victor C. Santana, 18, of 9528 SW 2nd Road, Boca Raton, was attempting to leave the parking lot of the basketball and tennis court area of Veterans Park.

As he began traveling forward, Fuentes reportedly ran up to the car and jumped onto the hood and passenger side quarter panel. The victim sat in this position, leaning back against the front windshield for a few seconds before falling off, said PBSO. As he fell, he sustained an injury to his head and was knocked unconscious, said the report.

By Dale M. King BOCA RATON - Palm Beach County’s proposal to widen sections of Palmetto Park Road to eight lanes has ignited a firestorm among Boca city officials, citizens and the Federation of Boca Raton Homeowners Associations.

But Deputy Mayor Susan Haynie told the Boca Raton Tribune that a proposed amendment to the city’s Comprehensive Plan could halt the county effort by limiting the width of that road to six lanes.

The City Council has already begun the process of amending the Comprehensive Plan “to reflect the city’s expressed desire to keep the portion of West Palmetto Park Road between Military Trail and I-95 [the portion within the City limits] at its current six lane configuration.”

BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic University High School hosted its graduation exercises Friday, May 20 in the Barry and Florence Friedberg Lifelong Learning Center on FAU‘s Boca Raton campus.

The group of 30 students represents the seventh graduating class since the school was founded in 2004.

A highly innovative public high school administered

by FAU’s College of Education, FAU High challenges students with an advanced curriculum that uses the dual-enrollment concept as its programmatic centerpiece.

“As FAU has evolved and increased in class size, I’ve found the quality and depth of our students to have increased as well,” said Terri Watson, dean of students of Florida Atlantic University Schools.

“Our students are academically talented and highly motivated. They continue

to outperform their counterparts and serve their community.”

The graduating class hosts a number of accomplished students, including Salutatorian Ashley Love, 18, who will graduate twice this year. She received her high school diploma May 20 and anticipates getting her bachelor’s degree in accounting from FAU in December. Love plans to apply to FAU’s masters program in accounting for the spring 2012 semester.

Love, who was often the

youngest person in the university classroom, commuted from Loxahatchee to attend FAU High, an hour long drive. “There were no limits going into this program, and it was so exciting . She currently works for a certified public accountant and would like to become a CPA by age 20. Her ultimate goal is to become the CEO of a Fortune 500 company by age 40.

More than half of this year’s 30 high school graduates will continue their studies at FAU; most have attended FAU High since their freshmen year. The highly selective program offers high school students the opportunity to earn high school credits and university course hours at the same time at no cost.

The school pays for tuition, fees and books. FAU High School is part of Florida Atlantic University Schools.

Next Hurricane Season on Edition 50

BOCA RATON - The city of Boca Raton along with local veterans groups will sponsor two events Monday, May 30, in honor of the Memorial Day holiday.

A commemorative ceremony will be held at 9 a.m.

Monday in Boca Raton Cemetery, 449 SW 4th Avenue, Boca Raton. It will feature veterans’ groups, city officials, music by the Fort

Lauderdale Highlanders, Boca Raton Community High School Band and Coastmen Chorus, drills by Boca Raton Community High School NJROTC and a performance by the New Young Patriots.

Also participating will be American Legion Post #277 and its auxiliary unit, Boca Raton Elks Lodge #2166, Estahakee Chapter DAR, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla #36 and honor guard units representing the city’s Police Services and Fire/Rescue Services.

Mayor Susan Whelchel and several other officials will offer “Thoughts on Memorial Day.” A commemorative wreath will be placed at the memorial monu-

ment recognizing each service group represented at the ceremony, followed by “Taps” and a traditional 21gun salute. Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

The “Summer in the City” music series continues Monday evening with a per-

formance by the New Gardens Band and the Robert Sharon Chorale at 7 p.m. at the Mizner Park Amphitheater, located on Federal Highway, just south of Glades Road. Bring along a blanket or chair. Food and chair rentals ($2 each) may be purchased. Free parking is available at several garages in the Mizner Park area.

To SUV or not SUV, that is the question A neighbor who lives a few houses down the street from us had a party over the weekend. It was a pool party, and since it was held in the afternoon, it was probably a birthday party for one of his young children.

He must have invited friends, all of whom are probably also parents of young children.

What struck me most was not the large number of vehicles in the area of his house, but the fact that every single one was a sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Again, I asked myself, why are there so many SUVs in a place like Florida? I spent most of my life in the Northeast, and there was a good reason for the proliferation of the big, utility vehicles in that area. The Northeast has snow, ice, hills and mountains, not to mention a variety of offroad spots that could easily ruin an automobile.

But in Florida? There’s no snow or ice. The earth is as

flat as the proverbial pancake. And off-road travel is usually restricted, illegal or both.

I don’t know if the popularity of SUVs is just a younger generation thing.

I do know older folks who also have SUVs. The only time I actually considered getting an SUV was when my wife and I lived in northern Rhode Island, an area known for its winding roads, steep hills and large quantities of snow and ice. There were many winter nights when it would be raining in Providence, but snowing by the time we got to our house.

And we had a very steep driveway. So steep, in fact, that when I made the occasional visit to Town Hall, the employees would tell me, “Oh, you live in THAT house!”

Yes, the house was beautiful, but the driveway was treacherous - at least one season of the year. In spring, summer and fall, there were no problems.

Those were lovely times, with flowers and trees everywhere. In autumn, the trees were a blaze of color.

My wife and I talked of getting an SUV to get up the steep driveway in winter. I remember visiting dealers and taking several SUVs out for a drive. I just couldn’t get used to them.

They were so big. When I turn a corner, I like to know that the back of the car is right behind me, not wrapped around a utility pole.

In my lifetime, I have wavered from small cars to larger cars, and now I am back to the smaller, fuelefficient vehicles. See, I have not even mentioned fuel efficiency until now.

It seems to me that if you drive in Florida, there’s no need for an SUV if you are operating on asphalt roads with no inclines and no hint there will ever be an obstruction that requires you to kick the vehicle into 4-wheel drive.

That’s another thing. Do

motorists need 4-wheel drive on Florida roads? It is just a waste of gasoline.

And, yes, I know not all SUVs have 4-wheel drive.

But consider the TV commercials promoting SUVs. Where do you see the vehicles being driven? Through rivers, through patches of thick mud, over sharp rocks and into heavily forested areas. If you’re going to spent multiple thousands of dollars for an SUV, is THAT what you’re going to do with it? Consider the luxury SUVs by Cadillac and Lexus and Mercedes.

Are you going to put it through the rigors of the worst kind of off-roading?

I’m not going to tell people what to do. I’m sure SUV owners can come up with dozens of reasons why they need the big vehicles.

POSITIVE LIVING

There are reasons to be positive and stay motivated in these difficult times I’ve spent a lot of time this past week meeting with business owners in Boca Raton, and I’ve seen that the retail market is still not up where it should be.

It’s sad to see people who are sad. I try to give these men and women a pat on the back for surviving during a tough economic period - and some of them tell me they don’t know how long they can go on like this. It’s tiring, it’s depressing, and it’s just plain hard work to come in every day not knowing if by the end of the afternoon, there will be more dollars in the cash register than the previous day.

I’m not a motivational speaker, but I know that this sluggish economy will pass. I hope it will happen soon, but no one can be sure. We hear things from Washington, D.C. about the nation’s financial system getting better. But it’s hard to believe everything.

Can we really kick start the economy when the U.S. has reached its debt limit - a debt measured in many tril-

lions of dollars?

In these troubling times, business owners are often stuck in the middle. On the one hand, they have to make sure that their retail shop, store or commercial industry makes a profit each day. On the other hand, they have to be certain that their workers receive the pay they deserve so they can support themselves and their families and not end up on the unemployment rolls.

If I could give citizens some words of advice, they would be: Stay motivated, and remain positive. Look for signs of improvement.

I’ve been watching the TV coverage of the recent tornadoes that have destroyed many communities in the Midwest. I was moved almost to tears - when I saw that someone had attached an American flag to a broken piece of wood atop a pile of debris that was once a home. Now, that takes courage. It takes tremendous inner fortitude when all your possessions, all your goods and all the

things you hold dear have been wiped out by a powerful act of nature.

If you drive around Boca Raton, you can see shopping plazas where many stores are vacant. You see restaurants with dining areas that are practically empty.

But you also see stores that are flourishing. You see eating places with waiting lines. You see shopping mall parking lots filled to overflowing with cars.

There is a reason to be positive and to work for the day when these difficult times are just bad memories.

There is reason to be motivated, for the sake of your children, grandchildren and the community you call home.

Even the city of Boca Raton is being motivated to make its downtown a more popular place to visit, to enjoy special activities and to spend money.

If everyone spends a few dollars, it’s a good start. A small investment now can return a larger investment later. That is my message.

Choices and Consequences To every choice one makes, there’s an inevitable consequence. Some choices bring anticipated results while, with others, the consequences may come as surprises, either good or bad.

Some consequences are immediate, while others may be seen or felt only after a prolonged, extended time. This very day the human race is still reaping both the good and the evil which were sown in a very distant past, through choices made by others. And so it shall continue to be for ages to come!

There are choices which produce drastic results, and others which bring very mild outcomes. A few, only affect the one who makes the choice, while others impact a much wider company of people, either for good

or for ill. For this reason, choices must be carefully made, and with much forethought, besides the anticipation of abundant fruit, resulting from a rich harvest!

Keep in mind that even positive choices may produce negative, even dire, consequences. By the same token, innocent choices may equally contribute to unsound results and devastating consequences.

There are choices that affect one in this life only.

Other choices, however, also have long-lasting consequences and, thus, must be tackled with utmost seriousness and without delay. In dealing with consequential issues, there’s no time to waste, and no reason for delays!

Many lives are wasted on earth, while others are

kept from endless bliss on account of wrong or postponed choices. And not making a choice, when one is called for is, in itself, a real choice.

This may be alright in a few circumstances, but not always so!

In things essential, whatever is left undone needs to be tackled, the sooner the better. Imperative decisions cannot be indefinitely postponed without the experience of inevitable, unpleasant consequences. Studiously avoid waiting until tomorrow for what can and must be accomplished today! Non-essential matters should be laid aside in favor of issues and activities whose consequences are of more urgent significance!

BOCA RATON - The Boca Raton Beautification Committee held its annual Landscape Excellence Awards, and honored residential, commercial and industrial entities that maintain the city’s lovely greenery.

Awards were presented by Barbara Benefield, awards chair, and City Clerk Susan Saxton. Bob Jennings, Beautification Committee chairman, welcome the group to the City Council Chambers for the presentation. A luncheon sponsored by Lang Realty followed.

Foster, adoptive parents honored; agency officials cite need for more homes PALM BEACH COUNTY - Foster and adoptive parents who gathered at a recent appreciation luncheon were encouraged to “give yourselves a pat on the back” for their selfless work.

“You are the best recruiters we have,” said Toby Pina, chief operations officer of Child and Family Connections (CFC). “You identify and help find foster parents.”

CFC and the Foster Adoptive Parent Association sponsored the event at Benvenuto Restaurant in Boynton Beach to honor those who have opened their homes and hearts to foster and adoptive children - youngsters who otherwise might face life in a shelter after being removed from their biological parents due

to abuse or neglect.

And while the atmosphere was light, with music, dancing and raffle prizes, officials from placement agencies stressed the need to find more homes for an ever-increasing number of needy children who have been removed from abusive households.

Judith Karim, chief executive officer of CFC, said 200 children are now available for placement in foster homes. Agencies throughout the county have already placed 450 youngsters.

“A lot more kids are coming into the system with deeper therapeutic needs because of abuse and neglect,” she told the group of foster and adoptive parents. “We want your input; please get involved. We would love to have foster parents repre-

“These kids only want love,” said Emmanuel “Manny” Oliver, a member of Florida Youth SHINE, made up of young people who have aged out of the foster care system. “I was in foster care from age 9 until I aged out. I can’t count how many homes I was in.”

Daniella Arnold, placement coordinator, said the “biggest challenge is placing sibling groups and teenagers.” She repeated the general theme of the event, that “there are more children than there are foster homes. We need people to open up their homes.”

Karim said the recent “tragic deaths” of several foster children in Palm Beach County has added to the influx of children in need of foster care. “Kids coming to us have experienced traumas worse than those we have ever seen in this field,” she said.

Dr. Angela Deal, vice president and chief operations officer for the placement agency called CHOICES, opened the ceremony with a prayer to give foster parents strength “to soar like eagles.” She also sought divine intervention “to take away [the children’s] feeling that no one wants them.”

“Open up doors where others have closed doors for these children,” urged Dr. Deal.

Agencies involved included 4Kids, Alternative Family Care, Camelot, CHOICES, Home Safe, Kids in Distress and Place of Hope.

Fundraiser at Shane’s Rib Shack aids Christine’s Hope for Kids BOCA RATON - Shane’s Rib Shack on NW 19th Street in Boca Raton held a recent fundraiser, and will donate a portion of the proceeds from the night’s event to Christine’s Hope for Kids Foundation.

The Foundation was started in January, 2010 to honor the memory of Christine Gianacaci, a 22-year-old Lynn University student who lost her life in that month’s devastating earthquake in Haiti while serving on a humanitarian mission with Food for the Poor. The Foundation looks to honor Christine’s giving spirit by reaching out to help underprivileged children and kids with differences.

Chalfonte volunteers help Yale alumni build Habitat for Humanity home BOCA RATON - A whole bunch of Boca Raton residents headed just a little bit north May 14 to help build a Habitat for Humanity house.

A half - dozen residents from the Chalfonte condominium joined a dozen or so Yale alumni to work on the house in Delray Beach. All the volunteers were from Boca Raton, and the owner of the house was also there to do her share.

Jim Shulman from the Chalfonte does some drilling on the Habitat “Every year, we do a profor Humanity home ject,” said Gordon Meyers, a Chalfonte resident who organized the group from the seaside condo. Throughout the world, he said, Yale alumni spend one day of the year to help the community.

Last year, 3,500 people turned out to work on 250 projects on one day - everything from serving food in soup kitchens, tutoring school, cleaning up parks and beaches, building homes for the homeless and providing support to orphaned children. This is only the third year the project has been in effect.

Princeton and Stanford joined Yale and universities in Australia, Japan and Turkey for this year’s Day of Service.

The crowd gathered to show their collective commitment.

The Chalfonte group hung drywall and painted, among other things.

The owner of the Habitat house, the mother of seven, said she has already put in 500 hours of “sweat equity” building the home.

“This is a concept which the Chalfonte Condo As-

sociation is implementing which we hope will involve many condos in the Boca Raton/Highland Beach area,” said Chalfonte resident Steve Laine.

He credited Meyers and the Yale University alumni with making the effort a success.

BOCA RATON - The National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) Boca Raton South Florida Chapter recently celebrated the accomplishments of a host of talented individuals in art, dance, music and theatre.

The evening began with a welcome from NSAL Boca Raton Chapter President, Judi Asselta. The musical

Chevalier Donald Mandich presented Alyce Erickson The National Society of Arts and Letters Distinguished Service Award for Leadership. Alyce responded, “I am humbled and honored to be a small part of this national organization of the National Society of Arts and Letters, whose purpose is to discover, encourage and assist young talented people in art, dance, drama, literature, music, musical theatre and voice.”

American Cancer Society’s R.O.C.K. Camp Event On May 15, there was a great fundraising event held at the Delray Beach Marriot Hotel. The world renowned artist Michael Israel painted three large canvases; one of John Lennon, the Statue of Liberty, and Marilyn Monroe on stage during the gala dinner. They were then auctioned by world class auctioneer Neil Saffer, assisted by his wife Trish and fellow Rotarians Dennis Frisch and Doug Giardano. Neil Saffer was honored for his long time support and partnership with R.O.C.K. camp and his efforts to help send kids with cancer to summer camp. Neil Diamond sound alike performer Neil Zirconia pleased the crowd with a rendition of his more popular songs. One of the highlights of the evening was a book signing by author/cancer survivor Scott McNeil. Scott spoke about his battle with cancer since the age of eight with five surgeries to remove a spinal cord tumor. At 23 years of age on May 13th 2011, he walked across the stage to receive his BA degree in psychology from the University of Miami.

All I know is the house was packed at an advance screening of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in the IMAX-3D Theater at the Museum of Discovery & Science, and by the finale, people were cheering.

This is the fourth outing for Johnny Depp as the paradoxical Capt. Jack Sparrow.

Jack is mincing but swashbuckling, cowardly but brave, nimble one minute, clumsy the next, and above all, full of pirate charm.

What exactly is that, I wonder? Pirates were dirty, slovenly, smelly, ruthless amoral misfits who stayed at sea for months at a time and made their living plundering ships and murdering people without cause.

Arrrrgh! Indeed. The answer of course is that it is Johnny Depp’s charm and magnetism that makes Jack Sparrow such a lovable rogue. At this point Depp has gone through everything in his bag of tricks

to make Jack interesting, so you see a lot of stuff you’ve seen before, including his dad (Keith Richards).

What you haven’t seen before is Penelope Cruz playing a female doppelganger of Jack Sparrow. That’s how the installment starts in London. Cruz is Angelica, a past love of Jack’s and allegedly the daughter of the fearsome Blackbeard, aka Edward Teach (Ian McShane).

The plot of any “Pirates of Caribbean” film doesn’t much matter. This one is by a consortium of writers who do a riff on Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth with mermaids on the side.

There is a side plot involving the grudge between Privateer Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Blackbeard, who lobbed off Barbossa’s right leg in a sword fight.

Taking over from Gore Verbinski, who helmed the first three, Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) directs with razzle-dazzle and non-stop action, accentuated by complex special effects. If you

stay for the closing credits you will see there are far more digital artists and special effects crew than actors and stage hands.

Two of the coolest things about the film are Hans Zimmer’s score and the beautiful but deadly school of mermaids. One of the most beautiful, Syrena (Astrid Berges-Frisbey), provides a romantic interest for the new character of young cleric Philip (Sam Ciafin), replacing Orlando Bloom in the requisite role of handsome, hunky eye candy.

There is not much more to expect from a formula originally based on a Disney theme park ride. Depp has expressed a willingness to continue for parts five and six, as long as people keep coming back.

I imagine there isn’t much any film critic can write to sway opinion one way or the other.

The subjects include Ruslan, who once was a punk rock star and now plays for spare change in the subway. Olga is a single mother who struggles to survive working for a billiard table company. Andrei is the most materialistically successful as owner of a chain of quality menswear

stores. Borya and Lyuba are married schoolteachers with a young son. From them we learn how history books have literally been written to expunge stuff that is no longer accepted.

“Our history is unpredictable,” Borya muses. “Lenin was just as murderous as Stalin. We just didn’t know it then.”

There is a lingering Russian melancholy in the new era.

“This political freedom makes your soul feel empty,’ says one of the subjects. “Church has become fashionable again.”

If you have even the slightest interest in Russia, “My Perestroika” is an eyeopener.

“Taking Things For Granted” There are propensities that appear to be common to all men. Daily life and frequent conversations confirm that we all have the malady of under appreciating the wonderful blessings around us.

Just let the electricity go off for a few hours, or let the car break down, or find yourself without the luxury of a hot shower for a few days and you realize we are truly blessed and often ungrateful.

I am discovering that truly grateful people are not those who have been spared adversity but have learned some indispensable lessons through their trials. The Apostle Paul was often in less than desirable circumstances and frequently in uncomfortable situations but wrote, “Be joyous always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5.16-18) Someone sent me this email several years ago and it has never ceased to remind me of my own attitude of ingratitude.

Black & Gold Spring Game at Olympic Heights

By Orlando Greenwald BOCA RATON - Something new has begun at Corey Lewis Stadium. The Olympic Heights Lions took the field early Saturday morning for their intrasquad scrimmage. The two teams were split in two - Black and Gold.

As the Lions took the field, there was one major change that could be seen by all -a new coach.

Coach Travis Johnson was hired just over a month ago

to replace Coach Mitch Henghold who resigned after 6 years at OH. The former defensive coordinator of Pope John Paul II has plenty of prior experience, including playing at the college level and working at many high schools across the South Florida area.

With the change at head coach, a new play book is installed. Moving away from the Wing T formation, Coach Johnson has integrated a new system which he personally calls, “Fast & Furious.” This new offense is very high-paced, resembling the University of Oregon’s style. The offense even goes as far as including the large posters with different pictures that represent a certain play just like the Ducks do. This hurry up offense features a lot more passing which was practically never seen during the past seasons under the Wing T. A new coach, a new system, and 6 weeks worth of hard practice led the Lions into their spring game.

Playing in front of parents, students, and former players, Coach Johnson ins-talled his new approach to the game, and pleased a pretty good crowd Saturday morning.

Right from the beginning it was evident that the “Gold Squad” was there to dominate the game. The squad was led by returning quarterback, Matt Kelly, who threw his first pass of the game as a quick slant to wide receiver, Richard Thompson that went in for 6 points. He had another

hookup with Richard and ended the game with 4 touchdown passes in total.

Another player who stood out for the Gold squad was number 80, Walvenski “Wally” Alme. Wally had a big 11 yard sack, a fumble recovery and plenty of chase down tackles that saved would be big plays. The Gold squad was able to put 35 points up on the board.

The Black Squad came out shaky, with many bobbled snaps, and some that just went over the quarterback’s head. With many broken plays, Kwame Clea did his best to escape and try to get as many yards as he could. The bright spot of the scrimmage for the Black Squad was towards the end when they finally were able to score their first and second touchdowns, both on passes from Kwame to Jimmy Derival and Kwame to Austin Redinger respectively. On defense will be senior Mike Kosoy who led the team with 2 big sacks, one that resulted in stalling a late drive by the Gold team.

Kicker Tolga Onur was perfect from field goals and PATs. The game ended 35 to 17 with Gold coming up victorious. Coach Johnson said after the game that this summer will be dedicated to getting “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” and the student athletes will begin summer workouts right after classes end.

Throughout the summer, there will be updates on your Olympic Heights Football team.

Cleveland Wins Draft Lottery Each May, teams without playoff life get excited for the NBA Draft Lottery. In Miami, just three years ago, we anticipated relief from the worst season in franchise history. Only Miami didn’t receive its number one overall pick, Chicago did. Miami parted ways with its number two overall pick Michael Beasley for a second round pick in this year’s draft, while Chicago drafted Derrick Rose number one, who is this year’s MVP. One pick, it was the difference between trading away an asset for making room for Mike Miller to getting the 2011 NBA MVP. One pick can set you away from greatness or irrelevance. There have been several teams with bad luck in the lottery, some of those trends continued, and some came to an end.

While some teams continued their good luck.

This year the ping pong balls were favored for the Minnesota Timberwolves, but they fell to 0-14 in the draft luck and didn’t win that #1 pick, they got the second overall selection, while Cleveland came in and got the #1 pick, just one year apart from losing their MVP LeBron James. Now it should be noted that Cleveland’s #1 pick was not their own. It was actually the pick they received for trading away Mo Williams for Baron Davis. What seemed to be a brain scratcher of a trade turned into gold for Cleveland. Meanwhile, the Clippers just continue to get bad luck. for L.A. Utah sneaked in and got the #3 pick, their first top 3 pick since taking Dominique Wilkins. They received that pick from New Jersey in exchange for giving up Deron Williams. Utah can easily improve their roster with such a high pick. But what is considered to be the weakest draft in recent years may have some of these teams scratching their heads in what to do with the pick.

Toronto/6.Washington/ 7.Sacramento/8.Detroit/ 9.Charlotte/10.Milwaukee/11.Golden State/12. Utah/13.Phoenix/14.Houston The Winners?

Cleveland - The Cavs not only snagged the number one selection, but they also grabbed the number 4 pick.

This will be a great way to jumpstart their way back to

relevance by getting two young stars in one year that can change the culture together in Cle-veland.

Utah - The Jazz also get two lottery picks. Although the number 3 selection will be difficult to decide who to take, most likely Irving and Derrick Williams go one/ two, the Jazz will be in great position to add to a great roster already.

Minnesota - Despite not delivering on that number one selection, the Wolves will get their hands on either Kyrie Irving or Derrick Williams to partner with NBA Most Improved Player and Rebounding Champ Kevin Love, and last year’s selection Wesley Johnson.

If Minnesota can get Ricky Rubio to come play with them they can begin to make some noise out West.

The Draft Lottery is a fun time. Look forward to the real NBA draft set to take place on June 23 in New York.

Boca Raton Resident has Olympic Dreams

Boca Raton Resident, Mariangela Macchiavello has a simple goal; represent Peru in the PanAmerican Games in Guadalajara this October.

The Florida International University star moves like a mermaid in the water, “In the water I feel free,” says Macchiavello, 20.

“No matter if it is five in the morning or six in the afternoon.”

Macchiavello’s goal is not only to represent Peru in the Pan-American games, but also to be only the fourth swimmer in the history of Peru to represent the country in the 2012 Olympics in London.

Macchiavello has been swimming since the age of six in Peru, but at 13

she took time off until she was 17.

Despite being away from the sport for four years, in high school, she was named captain and most valuable player of the swimming team from 2006 to 2008.

“She’s very talented and with little time in the sport still has much to grow,” said the head coach of the FIU swimming team, Randy Horner, referring to the swimmer.

“She has a natural talent for water and that’s not taught.”

Macchiavello has clear goals and a busy schedule, but she still finds time to be with her parents Sophia and Andres at their Boca Raton home, “Whenever I have free time I visit my

parents. They have always been supportive of me.

I talk to them every day, they are my best friends,” she said.

Sofia Macchiavello, meanwhile, highlights the efforts of her daughter to excel both in studies and in sport.

“Unlike many girls her age, Mariangela make a daily sacrifice. She trains at five in the morning, goes to school, and trains more after school. She still maintains an average GPA of 3.3. She is very dedicated to the sport and her career”.

Golf Swing Weight Training A New Approach By: Mike Pederson Golf swing weight training is as specific as you can get in regards to golf training to improve power, distance and iron yardages with every club.

Wouldn’t you love to add 10 yards to every iron? Instead of a 150 6 iron, you’re hitting a consistent 7 iron the same distance.

This alone will greatly improve your “greens in regulation” and getting more shots closer to the pin. The end result is a much lower score.

Golf swing weight training shouldn’t be new to you. You’ve heard all the pros train for their game. So why shouldn’t you? Here’s one secret that can add a quick 20 yards to your driver in less than a week or so.

Swing a weighted club!

This is not a revelation. But, I’m here to tell you it’s one of the quickest and most effective ways to increase your distances with all clubs.

The benefit is developing the

exact golf swing muscles from a strength and flexibility standpoint within your golf swing. You’ll improve your backswing and follow through range of motion, as well as your power through the hitting zone.

In all my dvds, books and websites I preach the importance of a balanced routine of both golf stretching and strengthening exercises for all your golfing muscles. This is critical for your long term success.

I am an advocate of this approach, and strongly suggest you be too. There are many muscles the weighted club doesn’t hit that can be affecting your game. Like the hamstrings, lower back and even abs.

But how about a little shortcut along the way?

Golf swing weight training is something I’ve personally been doing for over 10 years and I’m fortunate enough to say I can consistently drive the ball over 300 yards. I don’t say that to brag, but to say this type of

training and approach is effective and works!

Because I’m not a big guy like all those long drive competitors, golfers are surprised when they see me hit a drive.

They all seem to ask how can I do that? Immediately I go into my golf trainer mode and precede to tell them the importance golf swing weight training and working on the “machine” to hit longer drives.

Within a couple of holes they are hitting me with a ton of questions they want answered.

By the time I’m done, I wished I hadn’t told them what I do for a living.
