for a generation At BOERplay, we are passionate about creating inspiring indoor and outdoor spaces where people of all ages can play, exercise, discover, and meet. We believe that play and exercise is essential for the development of people on physical, cognitive, social-emotional, creative, and intellectual aspects, regardless of their age.
Experience and expertise With well over 60 years of experience of designing (inclusive) outdoor spaces for play, sport, meeting, and exercise, delivering our services and products worldwide. We cooperate with schools, recreational organisations, municipal authorities, and other organisations, using various furnishing concepts based on the needs of the users.
Attention to needs Whilst designing an outdoor area, we look through the eyes of the end user and select exercise and play equipment that meets the

different needs, age groups and play types. Thus, contributing to their physical and mental health as well as their social well-being.
Materials and safety Our playground equipment is manufactured by skilled professionals in our own factory in Nieuwendijk (NL). We warrant a long lifetime as we use sustainable materials, such as FSC® certified (hard)wood, coated aluminium, stainless steel and recycled plastics. In the design process of the equipment and the overall exercise- and play areas, we give safety the highest priority. In addition, we strive to reuse materials to promote sustainable solutions that are of value for both now and the future.
The four play types To help us create engaging and challenging play areas, we distinguish between four different play types: Energizers, Structure seekers, Builders and Observers. Each type has its own way of playing and has unique needs from a play area. The four types were inspired by the design philosophy of Dutch architect Bertus Mulder. By taking an approach that focuses on this diversity, we can enable each child to engage in their preferred style of play, alone or with others.

The influence of play
on development Playing is a great opportunity for children to stretch their limits. By taking risks, they learn to recognise and stretch their limits. This has a positive impact on the development of young children in the following ways: •
Sensorimotor development: Whilst playing, children use their senses to gather information about the environment and about their own bodies. By rocking on a springer, they feel the resiliency beneath their body and see the upward and downward movements. This improves their balance and coordination as they learn to control and adapt movement.

Physical development: Playing challenges children to develop their motor skills such as balance, coordination, strength, and endurance. Through climbing, jumping, running and other physical challenges, they develop muscles, strengthen their bones, and build a healthy body.

Cognitive development: During play, children are being challenged to solve problems, discover new things, and use their imagination. This stimulates memory, logical thinking, and creativity. Play also has a positive influence on the ability to plan, make decisions and concentrate.

Emotional development: Exploratory play allows children to overcome their fears and insecurities, build self-confidence and develop selfesteem. By taking on challenges and overcome obstacles, children learn to deal with frustrations, setbacks, and risks. They develop resilience, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.

Social development: Playing together encourages cooperation, communication, and social interaction. Children learn to negotiate and support each other during adventurous play activities. They develop social skills such as understanding others’ perspectives, respecting each other’s limits, and building healthy relationships within a group, and empathy.

Our vision for

This can be seen in every aspect of our play equipment, from the choice of materials to the smallest details. Our team of more than 100 employees creates hundreds of play areas every year with a mission of making outdoor play appealing and fun. Our play areas promote children’s development. But just as important for our children’s future are the methods we use to create them. We strive continuously to reduce our environmental footprint. Our ultimate goal is a circular economy in which the use of new raw materials is minimised, materials are reused or recycled, and waste is almost entirely eliminated. Some of the steps we are taking to make our 6
operations more sustainable include: Recovering, recycling and reusing equipment • Using sustainable and circular materials. We design and develop our products in-house, and we use durable , high-quality, circular materials. Moreover, we explore potential new materials, such as Green Matter – recycled plastic derived from artificial turf. • We use a range of materials in our products, including metal, aluminium, stainless steel, FSC® certified wood (Scandinavian pine, Robinia, tropical and European hardwood) and recycled plastic. Options for waste separation, recycling and reuse are investigated as part of the design process. • We are evolving into a partner that provides play solutions while retaining ownership of the resources. Play-as-a-service: instead of the physical play structure, we sell enjoyable play experiences by realising exciting play areas that are built to last.

Reducing waste. We work to order. Manufacturing on demand minimises the need for stock. As a result, we have almost entirely eliminated our non-quality costs (rejects and returns).
Dutch manufacturing and employment We are proud of the fact that our play and exercise equipment is manufactured in our own factory in the Netherlands. We also install the play structures ourselves. This allows us to provide employment opportunities here and preserve Dutch knowledge and expertise regarding play. We reduce our environmental footprint further by using local suppliers wherever possible.
Low life cycle costs Our equipment is designed for use in public spaces. It has a minimum lifespan of 15 years with corresponding warranties*, and we even offer lifetime warranties on some materials. We believe that play equipment should require minimal maintenance once it is installed and consider this at the design stage. Our equipment stands out for its low maintenance costs (<2% per year). This helps safeguard healthy budgets for new play areas and equipment. In the unlikely event that equipment does require repair, our products are designed to allow this to be carried out safely, responsibly and thoroughly.

Inclusive play
everyone’s welcome
What is inclusive play? Inclusive play means providing equal opportunities for all children to play, regardless of their background, abilities, or disabilities. To do so, we must create environments in which everyone feels welcome, can move freely and have fun. Inclusive play is considerate of diverse needs and provides accessible play areas and structures that can be adapted to support different ability levels. This promotes interaction, social integration and increased understanding among children from different backgrounds. Inclusive play is a crucial step towards a society where everyone has equal opportunities to participate in and enjoy play. Why are inclusive play areas important? Inclusive play areas have adapted play structures and accessible features designed to meet the diverse needs of children with disabilities. They foster a sense of engagement, acceptance and connection with other children. They also promote the development of motor, cognitive and social skills in children with disabilities. Creating an inclusive play area not only prevents the exclusion of children with disabilities but also allows them to fully participate in and enjoy play and social interaction with other children. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities emphasises children’s right to grow up and play together, but much work still needs to be done to achieve this. of Dutch organisations are working to make inclusive play possible for all children. The Samenspeelnetwerk (Playing Together Network) has formulated three key goals: 1. Promoting an inclusive play culture in which playing together is the key focus. 2. Creating more inclusive play areas and ensuring they are accessible for all children. 3. Expanding available knowledge and improving access to information about inclusive play. How does BOERplay support inclusive play? We have defined our ambitions and goals for creating inclusive play areas within the Samenspeelnetwork. We have pledged our support to the network by becoming a promisemaker. Throughout our entire process, we are committed to helping people play and move together, from product development to layout concept and from design to realisation. We gather and share knowledge during Samenspeelnetwerk knowledge sessions, and we collaborate with several partners, including NGSK, De Speeltuinbende, designers, TU Delft, students, local authorities, schools and advocacy groups. We strive to generate support and raise awareness about the importance of inclusive play areas. Our inclusive play equipment is designed to support conventional play activities as well as interactive play with other children and/ or caregivers without causing feelings of discrimination or marginalisation . This does not generate additional costs, but it does demand
a different design approach. For example, providing wheelchair-friendly equipment with multiple play options for children of all abilities, ‘flying-carpet’ swings that are suitable for all ages, sand and water installations with pumps and channels, accessible game walls, picnic tables with wheelchair access , and sensory walls that are fun for all children regardless of their sensory-motor differences. How are we helping to create more inclusive play areas? We consult with stakeholders such as play professionals, local authorities, designers, schools, care homes, community initiatives and children to identify their needs and wishes. We use this input to create a custom design and layout, resulting in a concept that is supported and welcomed by all stakeholders. We share our expertise and work collaboratively to spread awareness about the importance of inclusive play areas.

Imaginative play

Children are naturally curious and eager to learn. They want to understand and find explanations for everything, and pretend play is essential to this process. All aspects of children’s development are stimulated when they are allowed to play and let their imaginations run wild. That’s why we offer design concepts that support imaginative play. These concepts enhance the pleasure of play and encourage imaginative play and role-playing. Imaginative play and learning Imaginative play helps children better understand the world around them. Roleplaying, imitation and acting out situations are an important part of this. Learning through play supports development in several areas, such as thinking, imagining, planning, experimenting, remembering and communicating. Activities like visiting the supermarket, caring for pets, cooking together, or playing cops and robbers stimulate all these developmental areas. When children engage in play-fighting, chasing and even colliding with each other, they are developing resilience. These activities teach children how to deal with each others’ emotions, express themselves, cope with setbacks and persevere. Above all, they develop children’s social and communication skills.

Imaginative play with
Figura Play Figura Play is a playful programme, designed to support children’s learning through having fun and creating stories. The programme was developed specifically for young children. Figura Play has a fall height of less than 150cm , making it ideal for installing on grass. But it’s even more enjoyable when installed on a surface with a fun design that sparks the imagination and stimulates creativity. Figura Play is available in coated aluminium or recycled plastic as standard, but it can also be customised with your choice of materials and colours. The units in the range are compact in size and require minimum fall space.

Risky play
Building confidence through play
Children develop confidence and independence when they are allowed to push themselves and take risks. Adventure Play Explore and Basic Play Rocks have no predefined climbing routes. Children can explore independently and devise their own routes, even quite far off the ground. That’s super exciting! Risky play Playgrounds that offer challenging climbing routes encourage children to explore what they can do and push themselves further. They can try out new activities and overcome their fears, which is essential for their development. While parents watching from the sidelines may worry, this process is very important. Children naturally seek out excitement and adventure. They love to climb, especially high up, testing and exploring to see just how high they can go. Engaging in play that includes an element of risk is an important part of growing up. Self-confidence Offer children choices and allow them to discover for themselves how far they dare to go. Give them space to learn how to navigate acceptable risk. It’s essential that they have opportunities to test and push their own boundaries. This does not mean we should encourage dangerous play, but instead, provide opportunities for play that is exploratory and challenging. This is how children learn to assert themselves, both physically and mentally, helping them build self-confidence and develop as strong individuals.

Outdoor adventure The space available for free outdoor play is constantly decreasing. Growing population density means more and more open spaces are being replaced by buildings and roads. Added to this, parents’ increasing concerns about safety result in children having fewer opportunities to play freely outside.

Exploratory play encourages children to step out of their comfort zones, develop new skills and explore and expand their capabilities. We encourage them to overcome obstacles, take risks, think creatively and push themselves further. This helps children build self-confidence, develop resilience, and grow, both physically and mentally. Natural play
Exploring in nature
Think of the places you loved to play as a child. They were often natural spaces like the park, a woodland near home, or even just the patch of grass around the corner. These weren’t official play areas, but they were places where children could enjoy making discoveries. Children love to find their own spaces to play in and have a natural urge to venture into nature. Unfortunately, their chances to play in a natural environment are becoming increasingly limited. That’s why we’ve developed a special concept that provides opportunities for engaging in natural play and experiencing nature. This concept focuses on creating natural play landscapes and nature playgrounds. Natural play Children enjoy discovering nature: playing with sand and water or romping around with friends in green spaces where they can create their own adventures. Afterwards, they come home with scruffy knees and torn trousers, bursting with stories of the fun they’ve had. Unfortunately, urbanisation is removing such opportunities to play in natural surroundings. Research shows that as many as 15% of children never play outside (source: Jantje Beton, 2019). However, natural play and experiencing nature are essential to children’s healthy development. Nature-based learning experiences, natural play areas and green school playgrounds significantly contribute to health and learning, and it is vital that these are promoted. In an increasingly urban environment, playing outdoors and engaging with nature are crucial for a healthy and successful life (source: IVN, 2014).

Timeless play
on iconic equipment
Play spaces with a timeless character, such as those designed by Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck, are known for their iconic play features. These play areas are minimalist and modern in appearance, constructed to be effective and functional and able to withstand rough use. This allows them to be smoothly integrated into modern architectural projects. Inspired by Van Eyck’s philosophy, we present a concept with modern designs for timeless playground fun. Aldo van Eyck: the desire for a playful and informal society Play is timeless. However, playgrounds are not. The first playgrounds with specifically designed play structures did not appear until the late 19th century. These playgrounds charged an entry fee, restricting them to the children of well-off families. Immediately after the end of the Second World War, Dutch architect and designer Aldo van Eyck (1918–1999) was asked to design public play areas and play equipment for small, unused city plots . He installed equipment with modern forms and minimalist designs that stimulated children to discover their own interpretation of how they should be played on. Connection & imagination The playgrounds designed by Aldo van Eyck are renowned for their unique designs, playful approach and promotion of social interaction. They were characterised by geometric patterns, diverse equipment combinations and integration into their surroundings. Van Eyck placed the child at the centre of his designs and created community play areas where neighbours 28
could connect with each other. These spaces invited people to use them in different ways, such as climbing, chatting with friends or den building.
Timeless play with
Classic Play Classic Play is a timeless product line made of aluminium. Outdoor sport and exercise Increasing recognition of the importance of physical activity has led to a growing demand for outdoor exercise facilities. Spaces that provide opportunities for physical activity are a valuable addition to communities, school playgrounds and recreational areas. Children can play freely while (young) adults and seniors use the adjacent space to work on their physical fitness. Our challenging sport and exercise equipment is designed to offer a wide range of outdoor fitness activities. It includes table tennis tables, football pitches, panna cages, outdoor gym equipment and even an entire skate park. We have everything you need!

When designing sport and fitness areas, we look at the surroundings and the distinctive characteristics of the space. We also consider who will use the space, how old they are, how it should look and whether equipment for sport and play should be in one central location or separate areas. Customised designs
Built to last
Our in-house play landscape design team translates our vision from the perspectives of Energizers, Structure seekers, Builders and Observers into playground concepts. The play types are incorporated into the design in such a way that it is obvious that space and opportunities have been created for every type of play. (See the 2D design below.) Existing materials or play equipment can be integrated into the design, helping to reduce costs and promote circularity.

PROJECT Camping Linda (NL) A huge play ship has been installed on this campsite that will provide many hours of fun. The surfacing is artificial grass designed to enhance the playground’s North Sea theme, with areas representing sand and water and accentuated with colourful fish and shells. Another fun detail is the incorporation of the campsite’s logo in the artificial grass.

Sustainability and durability were important in this project, so the posts are made from recycled plastic. This material requires minimal maintenance. It also has a long lifespan, making it a better choice for the environment and ensuring that children can enjoy this playground for many years to come.

PROJECT Herford (DE) The German city of Herford undertook to upgrade their public play areas, a task that involved modification or even complete replacement of the existing playgrounds. Several providers were asked to submit proposals using preliminary details about the budget, age groups and available space. To ensure the city’s residents were involved in the process, the proposals were presented to the public, and BOERplay was selected to deliver this project. The resulting play area is exactly what the neighbourhood needed.

PROJECT Merwebolder (NL) The area by the petting zoo at ASVZ De Merwebolder in Sliedrecht has been remodelled to make it more accessible for all the care facility’s clients. Alongside a brightly coloured new playground, the area now boasts a mini road system, an animal enclosure and new green spaces and landscaping. There’s also a sensory area with a reading throne that serves as a gathering place. The new playground is a delightful space where residents and staff can enjoy keeping active in the fresh air.

PROJECT Tel Aviv (IL) This modular castle made of Robinia wood has been installed and approved in Tel Aviv, Israel! The play towers were designed to be enjoyed by multiple age groups, and the structure was created to meet Israel’s specific requirements regarding inclusive play values. Our Robinia wood castles are designed for easy transport and installation, so they can be in place relatively quickly to provide years of fun and adventure!

PROJECT Celbridge (IE) Imagination and adventure on a play ship on dry land! What could be more fun? ‘De Antilope’ was our first large play ship, and it set sail from the Netherlands to dock permanently in the Irish town of Celbridge. We worked with a local partner to design a play ship that met the customer’s specific requirements. Several copies
of this play ship have now been installed in Europe and beyond. ‘De Antilope’ is made of FSC®-certified Robinia wood. It is available in two lengths and has two large polyester slides. The play ship is a place where children of all ages can let their imaginations run wild. Who’s ready to sail the high seas?

PROJECT Vrouwenhof (NL) This project, created for the Vrouwenhof pancake house and playground in the Dutch town of Roosendaal, allows children to explore in, around and even over the water. On an island surrounded by a shallow pool, children can let their imaginations run wild or enjoy creative play in the sand. There’s even a pulley system with a bucket for hauling sand up onto the play structure! Children’s safety was an essential aspect of the design process. The water is just deep enough for paddling but too shallow for swimming. The play area is close to the restaurant’s terrace, so parents can watch their children as they play.

The project successfully achieved the client’s aim of increasing visitor numbers by providing a place to cool off during the hottest days of summer. Children arrive wearing their swimming costumes, eager to play in the water. Manager Maarten told us: “Bringing in the elements of water and natural play has allowed us to compete with swimming pools and beaches. Children come to Vrouwenhof to cool off in the hot weather. Hot days were much quieter before.”

PROJECT Bergambacht (NL) The playground and public space on the Poorthuisstraat in the Dutch town of Bergambacht was given a makeover. The redesign included elevating the area, new paving and planting and refurbishing the playground. The play area’s new

look is now more in keeping with its surroundings. The equipment is suitable for children aged 4 to 10 years, which means lots of swinging, climbing, jumping and even playing table tennis!
PROJECT Westende (BE) The playground at the Belcoast C-Hotel in Westende has been given a natural look. This is because it is located by the coast and many people otherwise choose the beach instead of the swimming pool at the hotel. The natural look can be seen in the overflow from pool to playground, but also in the material chosen.
This project used products from Adventure Play Explore range. The redesign aims to make guests’ stay more enjoyable and longer. For example, while parents enjoy a terrace, children can have a complete blast in the Belcoast C-Hotel’s brand new playground.

PROJECT De Vogel (NL) A phased plan for adventurous and natural play was developed for several play areas in the De Vogel holiday park in Hengstdijk in the Netherlands. The plan involved creating a number of smaller play areas around the park, followed by an eye-catching playground near the park’s central facilities. Our latest installations are an adventure playground next to the beach and an exciting play structure for older children near the camping area.

PROJECT Put Middelwaard (NL)
richtingsvoorstel Speelplek Put van Middelwaard, Vianen
When the Vijfheerenlanden municipality took over the management of the Put Middelwaard recreational lake, they asked us to create a new and exciting balancing course, an inviting space for older children and adolescents and a fun play area for little ones. A concept for challenging and natural play was created and realised after feedback from visitors, who were asked for their input on the design. The play and exercise area opened in the summer of 2021.
