CLASSIC PLAY
The majority of the Classic Play products have been designed by the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck (1918 – 1999). In 1947 he was hired by the municipality of Amsterdam to design a public playground. Back in those days there were no public playgrounds for children (the only ones in the city were accessible via membership) and his first designs were an enormous success. He soon became an independent designer specializing in playgrounds and up to 1978 he designed well over 700 of these, of which in 2016 seventeen were still fully intact.
Van Eyck taught at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture from 1954 to 1959 and was a professor at the Delft University of Technology from 1966 to 1984. As a celebration of his design legacy, seven of his original playground structures were relocated to the gardens of the world renowned Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 2013 to form a permanent exhibition where visitors can get reconnected with their childhood and admire the timeless and transparent design of van Eyck’s’ playground equipment.
WELCOME TO BOERPLAY! TIMELINE
For well over 50 years we at BOERplay have specialised in equipping school playgrounds, public areas and recreational spaces with active playing fun. We offer an extensive range of modern playground and sports equipment, street furniture and flower boxes. All our products are durable, maintenance-friendly and vandal resistant.
BOERPLAY AND SUSTAINABILITY
We realise that as a company, we have a major impact on sustainability. We produce in-house and, when possible, obtain our raw materials and semifinished products locally, with a positive impact on CO2 emissions. During design, the starting point is the Dutch sustainability norm (which succeeds that of the EU). We design with a quality that by definition guarantees a lifespan of at least 15 years. This is why we use high quality materials such as:
- FSC® certified wood (class 1)
- Stainless steel
- Galvanised and powder coated steel
- Aluminium
- Hercules rope
- Rebo plastics made of recycled household plastics

The first playground equipment, AlfaMATERIALS
The Classic Play playground equipment are made of aluminium. Aluminium is a special metal with a number of unique features; it is three times as light as steel and does not corrode. Aluminium is maintenance-free. Also in extreme conditions, cold or heat the material retains its properties. The material will feel cold in severe frost to the touch, but children’s hands or tongues will not freeze to the material. Aluminium lasts for a very long time and is therefore not required to be replaced quickly.
Aluminium is present in abundance. Around 8% of our earth’s crust consists of aluminium oxide. Producing new aluminium requires a lot of energy. It is therefore one of the most recycled materials. In order to recycle aluminium 95% less energy is needed compared to unprocessed aluminium. Recycling does not cause product degeneration.
Recycled aluminium can therefore be used for the same applications over and over again.
Machining aluminium is possible in many different ways. The freedom of form of the material is almost infinite. The material can both be formed and machined. Next to machining, aluminium can also be bonded together in various ways. BOERplay makes use of both welds and bolts. After processing, we powdercoat the aluminium. We use primary colours. At a surcharge of 5% any RAL colour can be chosen.
Thanks to the low base weight, aluminium is friendly in transporting. Less fuel needs to be consumed in order to transport the material.
DESIGNING ACCORDING TO THE 4 TYPES OF PLAY
For children, a playground is not only for playing, but also to socialise. In this space different rules apply than at home or school. Rules that largely stem from the children themselves. In order to encourage children to play their games, it is important that the playground is filled with challenges and stimulations. A good playground has play opportunities for every type of child. A place where they can sit or play quietly, where there is room for sports, climbing, playing hide-and-seek, talk and/or isolate themselves. There is enough room for games with clearly defined rules, and games in which children can fantasise and set their minds free. This is why BOERplay prefers to think in terms of the entire playground, rather than merely the equipment itself.
By providing space for different types of play, children learn how to handle conflicts, play together, be aware of each other and listen to one another. BOERplay categorises these as follows:
Energizer
Children in need of space; have a lot of energy and race around.
Relatively more boys in this category
Open spaces where everything is allowed and no rules apply; running, playing football, playing basketball, cycling or skating (depending on the available surface)
Structure seeker
Children seeking a lot of structure; they consciously search for a reason to play.
Relatively more girls in this category
Structured space designated for a specific play (play equipment such as seesaws, slides, etc.)
Builder Observer
Children using materials lying around; they build their own environment.
Relatively more boys in this category
The natural boundaries of a playground (trees, hedges, bushes). Fiddling, picking, crushing, hiding, isolating themselves etc.
Children seeking shelter; they observe others before they join in or just sit and watch.
Relatively more girls in this category
Prefer both vertical and horizontal structures where they can shelter.

Falling heights
BOERplay (playground) equipment are designed in such a way that grass is often sufficient as fall protection. In addition, there are many other materials that could be used as impact absorbing flooring, e.g. (coloured) artificial grass or rubber flooring with playful motifs.
Fall height
Solid surfaces (concrete, tarmac, hard clay etc.)
Below you will find an overview of the possible fall heights, the corresponding materials and the corresponding requirements for the minimum layer thickness. When in doubt, please ask for advice from your supplier.
* If there is a forced movement, a hard surface is excluded and absorbing ground material is required for fall heights of 1.0 m and above.
** Provided that the surface is free from gravel and rubble.
*** Sufficiently equal grain size
