hat an exciting time to be in the agriculture industry. I have never witnessed a buzz like we have seen this fall whether it was in the local auction markets, or the purebred sale barns, there is electricity in the air. One of the most rewarding things I have seen is the young people, getting back involved. The future for our industry is bright, and will be for some time. I was visiting with a great cattleman this fall, Wilf Davis, about the early import days. I was too young to remember when the exotic cattle first came into Canada, but Wilf made a comparison of how the atmosphere today is somewhat like those early years for our breed. How those early pioneers sought to get more pounds on those commercial calves in the fall by using a Simmental bull. It has come full circle, with one major difference. Years of breeding, tooling and continued development to improve our breed. Pounds pay, the dollars invested may seem higher, they may infact actually be less. There has never been a better time, or a better reason to invest in a Simmental bull, like there is today! As people adjust to the “New Normal, much like the fall sales, the early sales could be where the best buying is done, as this spring’s bull market will get more progressive with each passing sale. Welcome to our 16th annual bull sale, Friday February 13th, at the ranch. Our cow herd has grown in numbers, however this year our offering is slightly smaller. We have culled extremely hard to offer you simply the best. I am confident in saying this is the most complete, and best group of bulls we have ever offered from top to bottom. Last year was the beginning of a big shift in our bull battery with 5 new sire groups being represented, well this year 4 new herd bulls make their debut, along with a nice selection of AI sires. It is part of our commitment to supply new genetics to our customer base. I hope you are as impressed by the new set of genetics as we are. There will be much diversity in the pen, from performance, to calving ease, polled or horned, purebred or fullbloods, there is something for everyone’s’ needs. We are very pleased to be teamed up with Boehringer once again to offer you triple assured health protection on your purchases. Please read their ad in our catalogue for more details. In short it is added value for you our customer, and assuring you are getting the best protection we can provide. Our bulls are once again fed on a TMR cereal silage ration, with the intent of developing these bulls. We weaned in early September, with no creep, and then turned out on grass and introduced to silage; they were then started on bull ration in early October. Perhaps not the recipe for the biggest weights on paper, however they will last for many years to maximize your investment, and also to maximize their genetic input into your herds. Regardless if you are a first time buyer, or one of our many faithful repeat clients, we want you to purchase these bulls with confidence, and know if you have a problem, you will be backed by our no nonsense guarantee, and supply the best service to you we can. On a final note we would like to draw your attention to a couple new changes coming for the fall of 2015. We are always seeking ways to add value for our customers. We have teamed up with VJV Ponoka & VJV Dawson Creek to offer an “Anchor D Ranch Simmental influenced calf sale at each market, in early October. In doing this we hope to have a larger selection of same genetic based cattle to present to the buyers. This should give the buyers and feedlots an opportunity to assemble a group of cattle that should perform relatively the same, in bigger numbers. I hope this returns a premium for the producers, as every extra cent counts. Dates will be announced closer to fall, give us a call for more details. Please join us sale day for lunch. If you are unable to attend sale day, or wish to view the bulls prior to the sale, feel free to stop in anytime. We look forward to seeing you Friday, February 13, at Anchor D Ranch. It seemed only fitting to start off this year’s sale offering with the “Epic” sire group. I’ve always been a firm believer in that you always have to be on the hunt for the next herd bull. I am also a firm believer in the power of cow families. When “Epic’s” dam sold as a bred heifer we were the contending bidder on her, so I have tried to pay attention to what she has produced. We saw his sire “Colossal” in the flesh, and were on a mission to try and purchase a son of his. As luck would have it “Epic” came up for sale in December as a calf, and I just felt that he could be the one. I realize this is only his first calf crop, but I truly believe we have something special with him. There has only been one calf offered for sale from him to date, an open heifer sold at Agribition this fall, where she ended up being the high selling Simmental lot. We used “Epic” lightly on heifers, and saw the second largest workload this past year behind “Maximus”. The “Epic” calves are stamped. Super hair, depth of body, broad topped, and super dispositions. When 3 of 8 calves are what we consider to be features that says something. He has bred beyond our expectations, and I suggest as a sire group this is one you want to have a very good look at. As an added bonus we have decided to sell 3 lots of 10 Canadian Qualified semen lots on him. This will be the first, and only semen marketed on him for the 2015 breeding season. I think after February 13 “Epic” will no longer be a secret. I know this is only his first calf crop, but I feel he may be the best bull we have ever walked!

“Majestic” is a calf that just continues to impress me more each day. He is from a super young cow, off of our old “Dulcie” cow. We purchased her from the Hiemstra dispersal, at a ripe old age with the hopes of getting a few daughters in our herd. “Majestic’s” dam was worth the purchase alone. I talked about the merit of cow families, this is a bull that is backed by one of the best, and will do some outstanding things in his time. Who knows what this springs bull market will see, but I suggest that “Majestic” will be a bull you won’t want to fall short on sale day. If you like him, buy him.

Each fall at the female sale we display a few feature bulls. “Mazorotti” created quite a buzz, that day, and has continued the trend. Same story applies as before, with the strength of cow families. His dam is an incredible “Montana” daughter, who will find her way into our donor pen sooner than later. She has the ability to moderate birth weight yet combine outstanding growth. “Mazorotti” is dark red with an outstanding hair coat, incredible length of spine, and all the attributes to be a bull you can walk with your cows and heifers. He is as versatile of bull as we are able to offer this year, and with the pedigree he has, he too is similar to his sire in that he is truly something special.

I started with my first registered Simmentals 33 years ago. Yup hard to believe, but in that time our commitment has been to produce the best we could. In that time we have seen a lot of changes in the breed, in the industry, and in the people. One thing that has remained the same is quality will always surface. “High Noon” has risen to the top of his class. He is a bull we couldn’t be prouder of. You will note he is a 3/4 brother to “Mazorotti” and his dam is a full sib to Mackenzie’s show cow “Kate” who went on to be National YCSA Champion as a two year old. His great grand dam is a cow we purchased out of the Arnold Brothers Dispersal, and she left a huge impact on our herd, unfortunately we never entered her into our donor pen, but with only 3 daughters in our herd, she has proven to be a prolific influence in our program. Remember the name “High Noon” he will have an impact in our breed.

“Dynamo” is a very good “Epic” son that tends to get a bit over shadowed by his litter mates. When you stop and analyze him you really have to appreciate the makeup he has. A super stacked pedigree, extreme length of spine, great neck extension, and overall eye appeal. He will be a bull that you will grow to appreciate more each day, and will mature into an impressive individual. A very good bull from a really nice young cow, with a great history behind her.

A really nice put together “Epic” son from a first calving “Barbossa” daughter. We used “Epic” on all the first calving “Barbossa” daughters with very good results. “Epic” is very smooth fronted, with exceptional length. His pedigree doesn’t necessarily lend itself to being called a heifer bull, but with the built in calving ease of “Barbossa” it appears to be a winning combination. I do feel as though his sons from these “Barbossa” daughters will also prove to be very easy calvers as well, with maybe just a little more performance behind them. Having a shot of “Romulus” on the back side of this pedigree isn’t going to hurt either.

“Republic” is a bull I have really appreciated for some time. A very typical “Epic” son in pattern, with that deep body capacity, big broad top, strong color pattern and super hind quarter. Interesting when you look at this pedigree, he adds a whole new dimension in coming from a “Baltimore” daughter from our great old “Dorothy Jane” cow. “Republic” will be a bull with unlimited potential, and will deliver the goods every time. I know they can’t all be feature bulls, but this is a strong candidate.

“Neon Gold” is a younger bull from a really nice first calving “Barbossa” daughter. He has incredible length of spine, and is really smooth built. He too is backed by one of our super cow families, in “Herlinde”. “Neon Gold” will be an extremely honest bull that I would use to add length of spine, moderate some birth weights, and certainly keep a large number of his daughters. His color is pretty darn good too.

Another calf with a different twist on pedigree being from a “Magnum” daughter, who is a half-sister to “Dorothy Jane”. “Maroon” is the youngest bull in this year’s sale, but is high on quality and performance both. He has the very typical “Epic” stamp, and I would dare say he is the bull who has made the most progress since weaning. Sure that could be partially to age, as he is just really starting to mature, but he is also bred to be maybe just a cut above as well. However you interpret it, “Maroon” will be a very good herd bull choice.

We still dip into the tank and use some “Rogant” semen as often as we can. In my mind he was one of the best sires who’s semen was imported from Germany. If you trace back to many pedigrees, “Rogant” is sure to be found. “Ninja” is off of one of “Dorothy’s” very best daughters. “Kate” is a mirror image of her dam. She is a cow that can produce among the best, and always looks good in doing so. This is a great combination that has produced a real solid ranch bull that will produce those extra pounds in the fall.

“Maximus” has quickly become our go to guy. It was very interesting to me when we analyze each sire group, and until you break them down on paper you don’t truly appreciate the great job “Maximus” has done. His sons are just so darn consistent, and we are now seeing his first set of daughters swing into production and they are awesome. “Maximus” will moderate some frame, and maintain pounds in the process. His sons and daughters are predominantly dark red, heavy haired, and just low maintenance easy fleshing cattle. “Maximus” has seen the largest workload this past year, and is truly an amazing breeder. If his sons cover cows anything like him they can have a larger group. If you’re not there when he has cows cycling you won’t see them, he is one of the bulls who will actually breed them all and gain weight in the process. We are very fortunate to have this great bull in our herd bull battery.

Perhaps not the most original names, however “Max” is very original. He is without question one of my favorite bulls in the entire pen. His dam is a cow we purchased from the Jim Leslie Dispersal. Jim told me she was the cow in his herd that would always wean the biggest calf, and was perhaps his best producer. I would say Jim was quite likely right, as this cow could get the job done. Just stop and analyze the way “Max” is put together. I dare say he is as close to perfect as you can find. A super muscle pattern, huge top, and lots of rib shape. We named him “Metallic” quite simply because this bull is shiny. He is hard not to find in a pen of 80 plus bulls. That is something to be admired, as with all the tools and data we have now a days to assess cattle, the still most single important trait is eye appeal. When a group of calves hits the sale barn it doesn’t matter how they stack up statistically, if they don’t look the part, they aren’t as easy to sell, it really is that simple. “Metallic” has all to tools, the chrome, and the goods, and will produce to match these traits. This is early photo we took for ads and he did not get retaken, he is a much more mature bull than you see here.

“Mohawk” is from Mackenzie’s original 4-H cow “Candy”. She has been such a good cow for Mackenzie, just an extremely honest hard working problem free cow. If you had a whole herd of cows like her you wouldn’t go wrong. “Mohawk” will be a bull to add performance and growth, as well as his maternal strengths are second to none. He will add milk, be great on disposition, and add longevity and great foot structure. Both his dam “Candy” and grand dam had impeccable udders that are the type that don’t break down. Red to the hoof, great length, and over all body mass. “Rasputin” is very eye appealing, and is the type of bull that will work on a wide variety of cows. He has been a standout since birth, and as I mentioned this is only the second calf from this cow, but I expect big things from her down the road. Herd bull time.

“Roman’s” dam has been an extremely consistent producer for us, producing 6 bulls, all of which have made the bull pen. “Roman” will be a bull you expect to add growth and power onto a calf crop, but with this pedigree his maternal strengths are very powerful as well. He is simply a well-rounded individual that will produce the best in both ends of the pen. He has brothers working at Ferrybank, Mounkes, Orlick, Boisvert, & Dykstra’s herds, add your name to this list.

Another really solid made “Maximus” son. He is patterned much like his sire, and is backed by the great “Dorothy Jane” cow family. His dam “Saturn” has been a great producer for us. She is a moderate framed cow that is an absolute tank. She likely has as much volume as any cow we have on the farm, is super easy fleshing, and is the type of female you admire and appreciate every day. If we had to short list our cow herd, she would most definitely make the top cut. “Mars” is going to be a bull that should have a lot of fans, and as a mature bull who may be as impressive of a bull as you will find. Put a big star on him.

As you can see we have had a significant make-over in our bull pen. This will be “Intuition’s” first calves for us, and we are very pleased with the results. He will add lots of thickness, as well as muscle expression. I would guess his calves will be much like him in that he is extremely easy keeping, and has an outstanding pleasant disposition. I know when we purchased him we had a few comments about being a straight white faced bull. As you can see making them dark red, and with pigmentation is certainly not an issue for him. As a young bull he is very impressive to see, I would guess as a mature bull he will be mind blowing.

“Olympus” comes from another great cow family in “Desiree”. We finally shipped her at age 18, and have several daughters that are aging with grace. Longevity is certainly in his cards. Corona has been a cow that has always been light on birth weight and high on performance. As a first calving heifer she raised one of our feature “Montana” bulls selling to Three Hills Colony. I know Jake & Johan always had nothing but good things to say about this bull. I feel as though “Olympus” will be one of the really great buys this spring.

“Baulderdash” also comes from the “Desiree” cow family. He is a bull that continues to get better and better each day. Super dark red from a wicked good “Samurai” daughter, making her a half-sister to “Imax”. On paper this bull has all the credentials to be a great one, and in person he matches up. This will be a super solid herd bull for someone that will turn heads for many many years. In my mind he has the potential in this sire group to be the next great one.

We can never have too many cows like “Lindsay”, “Frontier’s” dam. She is a direct “Herlinde” daughter that has an impressive track record. We finally took the time to flush her last year, I guess that should endorse her as to how much we think of this cow. “Frontier” is her 7th bull calf with 5 of the previous 6 all finding their way into purebred herds, with the 6th going to Sunny Bend Colony. This is an outstanding productive cow with many years still in her. “Frontier” himself will make them thick and chunky, add longevity, muscle, and be sure to keep those daughters.

His dam comes from a full sister to “Three Sixes” mated to “Evan” and has been one of those cows we always use to experiment with, when we use new sires. She is a cow we can always rely on to moderate some birth weight add thickness, and blend in that super dark red color. “Integrity” won’t be one of the biggest bulls sale day, nor is he bred to be, however if you want a hassle free bull in an affordable budget, he very well could be your bull. “Buddy” will add some performance and growth. His dam is a larger framed “Molson” daughter, who is very stylish, and has a unique outcrossed pedigree for our herd. She has an absolute picture perfect udder, and will certainly produce some big time performance cattle. The first year on a sire group always tends to be a bit different, as we are trying to learn which crosses will be the most complimentary, and maximize the genetics on each side of the mating. This is a cross we will duplicate, as I think they will expose the absolute best traits on each side. “Buddy” will be big dark red and super hairy, add both growth and maternal, and look good in doing so.

“Nestor’s” dam was a very solid producer, with a great cow family behind her. In fact her dam produced 8 full siblings including “Vanessa” averaging right at $9000, and also went on to be entered into our donor pen. “Nestor” had to be grafted onto another cow at about 2 months old, which wasn’t the easiest task, as he did have a bit of a mind of his own. However with just a slight bit of setback he grafted on, and has developed into a really solid made bull. He should be super thick, and produce some outstanding steers and replacement heifers. I think he could very well be one of the bulls in this year’s sale that could be a bit of a sale sleeper, so my advice is track him down and have a good look, he is a real honest rancher bull.

We purchased “Maltese” as a mature bull, but unfortunately his time had already passed, so we will have a very limited amount of offspring from him the next few years, through AI. This particular bull has a very neat pedigree, as he is from “Saphire’s” very first calf. For those of you not familiar with “Saphire” she has now moved into our #1 position in the donor pen, and is the dam of “Venom”. “Scooter” is a family favorite around here. Every year there seems to be that one particular bull with that look at me attitude. “Scooter” happens to be the one this year, his catch phrase would be “No worries”. He is a super stout big capacity bull with lots of performance, huge muscle shape, and from a cow who does it time and time again. She produced the likes of “Kings Ransom”, going to Kulyk Simmentals, SK, “Camouflage” going to Hidden Dreams, ON & “Fake ID” selling to Battrum Cattle co, AB all of who were feature bulls, not to mention “Bettina” who is in our herd, and produced one of our top prospects this year. To say this cow can get it done is an understatement, and with “Viper” as his sire only sweetens this whole package. Look him over, he’s something special.

For the past several years we have not sent herd bulls to pasture as by the time we go to grass the cows should be bred. Well Mother Nature never explained to the baby bull calves that they aren’t quite old enough to get the job done, or are they? Yes “True Grit” is the result of one of the little fellas getting the job done. We believe his sire to be the second high seller from a couple years ago, “True Grit 520Y” selling to Blushrose Simmentals, SK, as he had a bit of extra age in the pen. At the time of cataloguing we haven’t received DNA back to confirm this but will have by sale day. If he doesn’t match to that sire choice he will have to simply sell as a grade. No matter of the results, he is a big dark red heavily pigmented young bull with great performance, from a beautiful young cow we purchased from Buzzard Hollow Ranch in Texas. He has just ran out with our herd bulls until Mid- December, so he won’t have a bunch of extra condition, just in perfect shape to start the spring off right. He is our only extra aged bull in the sale for those of you needing to get a bigger job done.

He comes from a really solid producing Prospect Hill cow that always manages to put something good in the pen. There will be extra performance coming from “Windsurfer”, and he will no doubt be a bull that is more than capable of producing a big powerful set of feeding steers. I also believe that he will be a bull that just gets better and better with time. Her influence in our herd will remain, as many of you will be familiar with “Damascus”, her “Antonius” son we had work for us the past couple years. He had a great set of bulls in last year’s sale, but his daughters are absolutely flawless. “Pallidan” is extremely similar to “Damascus” in that they are both super easy fleshing, dark red, and heavily muscled. His weights will be a bit off, as his dam was simply worn out, but mark my word this bull has no end of good things to offer.

This years poster boy, “Windsurfer” has developed into a pure power beef bull. If you want them thick and full of red meat, then you need to look at this sire group. Regardless if you’re feeding out your own calves, or shipping them in the fall right off of mom, these will be the performance bulls as a group. Interestingly enough, Mackenzie’s 4-H steer last year was a “Windsurfer”. He was gaining in excess of over 5 lbs. per day, until we slowed him down. If you want them bigger it only takes a feed pail, as these guys will have the gas to get there, but are fed to last. Another strong selling feature on “Windsurfer” is the cow power behind him. You’re not just buying into performance, you will get an amazing set of daughters to make brood cows with as well.

A true pen favorite for me. “Questo” is the running mate of Goldbrick and I think you will quickly notice the same great characteristics these two bulls possess. His dam is unquestionably one of my most favorite cows, with an absolutely flawless udder, extremely easy fleshing, and the ability to raise super stars. We don’t have a lot of “Montana” daughters, however when you look through and find one off of one of those cows they are typically at the front end of whatever sire group they are in, they are just wicked good. Like the bulk of the “Windsurfer” calves, “Ortega” does have extra length, depth and pigmentation. Yes as a sire group they do have a bit more birth weight, however we certainly have no problems calving them, when these calves hit the ground, you can certainly see where the extra weight comes from as they are super long spined, and then just begin to bulk up. His dam offers some outcrossed genetics for many, and is a cow we purchased back from CDR Simmentals, when they decided to disperse. She was infact the sale topper of our female sale, the year she sold as a bred heifer. “Ortega” will develop into a bull that I’m sure will have many admirers.

Yes we did have a few comments about too bad he’s not red, can you imagine what he would be worth. I have often said the same thing about him. As a breeder I too get caught up in the color, and other factors we believe to be important. Now let me ask you this, have you ever noticed those big buckskin steer calves when they hit a sale barn? Have you ever heard the buyers say, oh too bad there buckskin? More often than not they fetch a premium. This is a serious herd bull, that I would be extremely proud of having the entire pen just like him. We can never raise too many like this. I think his name is very suiting, because when his calves hit a sale ring, they will be just like a bunch of “Gold Brick’s”. Have your accountant on speed dial, whoever gets this guy will create themselves a tax problem.

We didn’t have an overabundance of these buckskin bulls this year. I always like to have a group of them on offer, and when you look at “Joker” I think you would agree he will produce a great set of steers. Typically we have not shown cattle. Our show ring has been the sale barn and the feedlot. “Joker” would not win a lot of ribbons, however he will reap a lot of dollars with the calves he will sire. Use him on whatever type of cow you desire he will do a great job.

“Mr. Gibbs” is a bull that Garren raised, and went through our sale a couple years ago where he was the third high seller. Tony Sanderson purchased him, and we mentioned that day we would like the opportunity to purchase a piece of him back. “Mr. Gibbs” did a great job breeding for both of our herds where as a yearling he covered 2 sets of cows, grew like a weed, and looked like a million bucks in the fall. His first set of calves have really impressed us with their growth, his calving ability, their great length, and yes they seem to possess his same super-duper attitude. Look at the “Mr. Gibbs” sons to pass on those same great traits, and with the “Image 21J” cow family behind them, they should all be extremely maternal as well.

It seemed only fitting that Garren have the feature “Mr. Gibbs” son in the sale. Garren purchased “Commodore’s” dam from our good friends at Ferme Sibelle, in Quebec. She has been a tremendous purchase for him, and is the type of cow you would only want more of. This fall at the Bar 5 Extravaganza Sale, her full sister sold for $12,000, and yes she is a half-sister to “Dirty Harry” who sold for $35,000. The dollars don’t necessarily make “Commodore” good, he just plain and simply is. This is a mating that will be duplicated again, and we expect to see the same results. There will be very little guess work here, this is a great bull.

His dam is an awesome producer, she always brings in a great calf. Perhaps not the first cow you notice in the pen on her own, but definitely a cow you notice when she has a calf at side. Last years brother went to Dave & Pam Simpson in BC, and he was one of the feature bulls. I know “Michael” has no pigmentation, but don’t let that fool you, he will throw it. Point and case just check out the “Intuition” calves. One of the really good bulls in this years offering.

“Admiral” is off of one of my favorite cows. She is now 12 years old, and still would rank as one of the top uddered cows in the herd. She is always in mint condition, has a great foot with lots of depth of heal, and is one of the most gentle cows I have ever worked with, besides the fact that she has been an absolute rock star producer. It was almost like Christmas all over again this year when she gave me a heifer calf. We bred her to “Razzmatazz” several times, always producing big hairy long bodied performance bulls. When we mated her to “Mr. Gibbs” I must admit I was trying to get a yellow bull calf. He didn’t come yellow but, we did get a performance bull. He will add some frame and size into a group of calves that will have lots of growth. Certainly on the female aspect, longevity is bred right in, so don’t hesitate to keep those daughters.

“Commander” is similar to “Captain” in type. Another bull with lots of hind quarter, hair, and a great top and is really long. I guess you don’t really realize it until it’s too late, but those really productive cows just seem to age on you so quickly. His dam is another 12 year old cow that came from Movald Ranches. She has just been extremely steady, not necessarily putting the top calf in the pen, but always putting a strong marketable calf in the pen. I guess it speaks volumes alone when a cow of that age just solidly keep plugging along. You can never have too many like that, the reason you don’t notice them so much is because they are just problem free. Have a close look at “Commander” sale day, he will age like wine, and only continue to improve.

There will be no lack of performance here. “Captain” is a very typical “Mr. Gibbs” son possessing extra length of spine, a terrific hair coat, and a big old top you could camp out on. His dam is a real nice honest female that we wanted to just add a touch of power to. I would use “Outrigger” on a bigger higher performance set of cows. He should moderate frame while maintaining performance and be a solid color producer as well. He will be a bit of a sale sleeper.

The old saying about you never really know how good a bull is until his daughters get into production is so very true in the case of “Montana”, infact he may have been one of our very best. “Sparticus” really has the best of all things we can offer her, tracing back to not one, or two, but 3 of our top cow families, in “Herlinde, Dorothy & Image 21J”. This will be the final calf crop for “Mojito” for us. He was an outstanding bull for us, and after he finished breeding our cows (which is this calf crop) he went to work for XRC Simmentals, SK. We have typically always sold all our bulls, but the year “Mojito” came along we really felt as though his best value was for us to retain him. A decision we never regretted. “Mojito” is as sound of bull as you could find, from one of our top cow families. His sister “Saphire” has positioned herself as our #1 donor cow, and is perhaps the most impressive cow we have ever had grace our pastures. His dam is now gone but she does still have a full sister in our herd, who will be calving this spring at age 15, with no signs of slowing down. If you need to add foot structure, depth of body, overall muscle mass, and add color into your herd, this is a very solid sire group to choose from.

“Brinks & A.T.M.” are a set of twins who certainly have no lack of performance. “Brinks” was raised by their natural dam, whereas “A.T.M.” was raised on a foster dam that was a first calving heifer. He may give up a bit in size, not much, but also keep the cows in mind that raised them. This is a really solid pair of bulls, who we have sold 2 full brothers to in the past, one going to Mike Bauer, ON, and the other to Gerald Smith, AB. Their dam has been a tremendous producer for us, and with past full brothers being sold I guess you know we liked the cross. She is an awesome cow who has produced bull after bull for us, and managed to squeeze a couple of really good daughters into the herd in the process. This is the first time she was mated to “Mojito” as she had a steady date with “Tazz” for many years. “Bandito” is certainly no disappointment for us, as she has just kept right on producing the good ones with where ever she goes. If you’ve owned a “Regis” son, then you will know exactly what I mean in this guys’ description as they were pretty well all the same. Only thing is there is no relation what so ever. His dam came from the progressive young breeders, Stout Brothers, and she was a cow that would moderate birth weight, and was very strong on polling her calves, when using horned bulls. This is the only “Elexis” son in this years sale. This fall in the female sale we made the decision to part with “Elexis” as the Treasure lot. Our friend Brian Mardy made the decision to try and assemble an embryo inventory on this great cow as she is starting to show some age. If you really stop and look at what this cow has done for our program in the short period of time we had her, it is truly amazing. She is a cow that worked with a large number of horned sires for us, polling the majority of them. The mating to “Spitfire” is one of the very few crosses we actually did on her with a polled sire. If her only claim to fame was producing “Imax & Eclipse” then that would be pretty good, but it doesn’t just stop there. I actually think “Fireball” could write another whole new chapter. Have a close look “Fireball” is a hot ticket. (Homo Polled test Pending)

The “Sorcerer” has been one of those standout calves from day one. He has always looked the part, and is loaded with eye appeal and style. The “Sorcerer” should work in a heifer pen, or throw him in with your cows, he won’t disappoint. He will be one of those bulls you can use anywhere with great results. He is from a really nice first calving “Molson” daughter who traces back to “Legend & Hosea” so there is very little doubt as to where the dark color and all the style comes from. Long and smooth, “Sorcerer” should quite simply be a wizard for you.

Not anything new here, a direct son of “Dorothy Jane & Three Sixes”. We had a handful of yearling recip heifers I wanted to use, so we made sure we used bomb proof calving ease embryos on them. “Hatchet” has a number of full siblings including a full brother working for the Trasks in BC, at age 9, “Shock “N” Awe” who worked for three different purebred herds in Ontario and “Kate” who is the dam of lot #9. Now I’m talking about calving ease, which he most certainly is, but also note the dam of lot #9 and what they can do when you throw some power at them. There is lots of jam here, and I’m very certain “Hatchet” himself would be a bigger bull if not for the fact he was raised on a first calving heifer. Point is calving ease, yes, maternal, yes, longevity, yes, strong color, yes, good choice, absolute yes!

Super long, dark red polled Full Fleckvieh bull, who combines calving ease with growth. “Sharp Shooter” is a bull I would confidently use on heifers, but expect much more. His sire “Venom” was the walking mate to “Viper” the year they both sold. They both fetched the same amount of dollars sale day, and everyone knows that “Viper” went on to have a successful show career. We have utilized both these bulls in our program through AI, with great success. In fact “True Grit” sire of lot #26 was one of our high sellers at $21,500 to Blushrose Simmentals, SK. “Sharp Shooter” has so much potential being from a dark red, polled “Bravo” daughter. The pedigree here alone is intriguing, and I dare say with “Sharp Shooter” you have the potential to hit the mark every time.

I would have to say if you’re looking for a bomb proof calving ease bull, “Image” would have to be my first choice. I think everyone knows how excellent “Arnold’s Image” worked on heifers, combined with “Legend, Regent & Antonius” and you have a serious list of calving ease contenders all stacked up. Please take the time to look “Image” over though. Sure he’s a calving ease bull, but just look at the muscle shape, the top, depth, and rib on him. This is a bull that will be a rare find. I’ve always maintained the hardest bulls to find are the heifer bulls that will give you more than just a calf. I think “Image” is one of those very bulls, and with the pending cow herd expansion on the horizon, I think he is one you will want to have high on your wish list.

You will see we’ve put the bulk of the heifer bulls all in one section. “Barbossa” has proven himself time and time again to us on his true value to our program in the heifer pen alone, besides the fact he has produced the high selling sire group, and individuals in both the bull and heifer sale the past several years. Our confidence in him can best be explained when I tell you 2 years ago he bred 53 heifers for us. A slightly smaller group this past year, only because we were fortunate enough to use his son “Tortuga” on heifers before he entered stud for Alta Genetics. His daughters producing for us now are exceptional, and there is no sign of “Barbossa” slowing down for us. If you want peace of mind in your heifer pen then look at his sons, but also remember you’re getting so much more than just a heifer bull.

It seemed only fitting to name one of these “Barbossa” sons “Guardian”. “Barbossa” is as good of heifer bull as we have ever owned, in fact he probably is the best one. He is so predictable, and if you can allow that heifer to have minimal stress on that first calving, I think you have a better cow in the end because of it. “Guardian” is off of an absolutely beautiful “Razzmatazz” daughter, and just happens to be smooth polled to boot. For whatever reason he decided to have no eye pigmentation, which is very strange, as his dam is pretty well a blazed face. I have to draw your attention to “Intuition” once again. He too comes from two heavily pigmented parents, yet came white faced, but just look at the pigmentation he is throwing. It’s there trust me, and “Guardian” is a very well put together total package, who will watch over your heifer pen.

“Chester” is a family favorite. He had a lot of extra love and attention, as his dam did the splits while coming into the barn to calve. She was basically in survival mode, so “Chester” had a variety of moms for those first few weeks until a foster mom came along. Well in that time “Chester” went from being a calf to being more of a family pet, and he still has that laid back attitude. He is another top notched heifer bull candidate, with a great smooth shoulder set, a very moderate birth weight, and a nice small head. Just a very solid choice as a heifer bull candidate.

If you have the time to view some of the “Barbossa” daughters in production, I think you will understand where we are coming from. “Ego” has made a lot of friends over the summer. He is from “Angelica” Mackenzie’s show cow, where as a cow calf pair they were named Reserve Champion 2 year old at the Alberta YCSA show and at the National show in Manitoba, she was named Champion 2 year old and Reserve Supreme Champion Female. Ego himself had some bragging rights on his own, as he was named Reserve Champion Bull Calf at both shows. He’s pretty cool, but more importantly is his dam. “Angelica” is a cow that I have extremely high hopes for (so does Mackenzie). We absolutely admire this young female, and she is backed by a top notched cow family. We actually went out and purchased back “Entourage” this fall, who is a full sibling to “Angelica”. I know whoever buys him should expect some frequent phone calls from Mackenzie, as she has grown pretty attached to him. This is a bull that has an awful lot to offer to the industry, and needs to be looked at very seriously.

He is a super deep sided bull, with another really strong cow family backing him up. The “Macenta” cow family have all been stellar producers for us, and also stem back to a great Fleckvieh foundation. Another strong point to me is “Macenta” is a direct daughter of “Robin Hood”. When we trace back to cows that produce time and time again for us he seems to find his way into those pedigrees. “Wolfgang” is a very typical “Wolfman” son in his frame, muscle, hair and great foot structure, he just adds yet another dimension with the cow family behind him.

Here is another of those red bulls that is from a 1/2 Fleckvieh cow. “252R” has been an outstanding producer for us raising several really good bulls, and having one daughter in particular that always brings her A game (dam of lot #71). She has been designated as a yard cow the past two years, as she had foot rot that moved into the bone so her mobility is somewhat limited. I guess that may endorse how much I like this cow with cull cows fetching the dollars they are, yet she has been given a pass to hang around the yard. “Timber Wolf” is a baldy bull that will produce the big stout steers and sweet made heifers.

Big performance here. “Stone Wolf” would be more of a terminal candidate to give you those big power steers. I hope that where ever this bull goes I will get the opportunity to see the calves he sires before they hit the market. I have often said I truly believe in order to become a purebred breeder you should be made to feed a pen of your own cattle to finish. I really think “Stone Wolf” will sire a group of steers that will be easy to feed, with big gains and high yields.

“Were Wolf” is a bit finer made than the bulk of the “Wolman’s”. He is from a very feminine long bodied black cow. Like his dam he is very long spined, and smooth shouldered to make him an easy calver. He too traces back to our good old black cow “Moe”. I do think this is one of the red bulls that may slide under the radar a bit. With our sale being as early as it is, this is a bull who will look so much different come late March. I promise you by late March he will probably cost double to where he will be sale day as well. Be sure to track this guy down, he will be one to have a good second look at.

Mackenzie’s lone purebred cow has been a very solid producer for her. Last years halfbrother sold to Doug & Phillis Hill. He is very similar in type to last years bull, and comes from a very nice broody female, moderate in frame, very deep sided, with great foot structure. Like the rest of the “Wolfmans” Mackenzie Wolf” will be a traveling machine. These bulls get out and move with agility and are good breeders. Good solid decision here.

“Black Wolf” is the only black “Wolfman” bull we had this past year. Once again going back to the “Moe” cow family. He is a younger bull that maybe gives up a bit of masculinity sale time due to his age. Trust me this guy will develop into an outstanding herd bull. He will have all the qualities and traits you need to sire a group of calves that completely squash the scale down, and a set of replacement females that will have you wet with anticipatory drool. (Yes anticipatory is a word). He’ll be damn good.

A big performance bull coming from a cow we purchased out of our production sale from the Snider family. She was bred to “Eye Candy” a “680S x Kisses” son they used in their herd. This past summer they showed 4 sisters from this bull, and they were impressive to say the least, and were carbon copies of one another. I really feel as though “Candy Man” will produce the same way his sire has, and put together a set of calves that are like cookie cutters. He is a really cool bull, with tons to offer, and from a tremendous cow we will see a lot more of in the future.

I’ve never been there, but from what I hear how could you not be excited about “Mardi Gras”? Here is another of those calves that has just stood out from the day he was born. When we started in developing our own set of red cows we used some of the best Fleckvieh based cow families we had to build up from. “Mardi Gras” is actually a 3/8 Fleckvieh, solid red, multi-generational polled bull. His “Bodybuilder” granddame, would have been our top red cow in my mind, which we bred back to “Venom” to combine another of our Fleckvieh cow families in. I don’t know if he is or isn’t cool by industry standards, but I dare say you stop and analyze this bull for his potential and his potential outcross, and I think we do have something special here in “Mardi Gras”. Homo Polled Test Pending.

We are very pleased to present you our first set of “King Louie” calves. He is a very typical “Stubby” son. Very easy fleshing, moderate in frame, but built like a brick. He was used on all our first calving purebred heifers, as well as a few big performance cows. He is a tremendous breeder, and calves extremely well. I feel very confident the bulk of his sons will work as heifer bulls as well. As I said we used him, on some power cows also. There is no lack of jam there either. He is an extremely versatile bull that can walk both ends of the pen, and put marketable offspring in from either group.

Super stout, really hairy, with huge testicles, moderate birth, and an impeccable dam. She is a young cow but in the time she has produced, she has proven to be a birth weight moderator. She is a beautiful cow with a great disposition, very nice udder, and extremely easy fleshing. “King George” will tend to be more moderate in structure as well, and I would say as well to be very easy keeping. I would say even with his thickness he is a bull that should be able to be used on heifers or cows with the utmost confidence.

“King Henry” will be the big performance bull in the “Louie” group. His dam is a huge volume cow that has tons of milk. “King Henry” will no doubt produce those big heavy weight steer calves that will really tip the scale at the sale barn. His dam has been a very solid producer for us not necessarily putting the top calf in the pen but having daughters that will do so. “King Henry” will do a fabulous job, use him as a performance bull.

This is my personal favorite of the “King Louie” sire group. “King Julian” really displays like a “Stubby”. Big hip, big top, big hair, small birth weight. I think he has as much potential as any bull we offer this year. I like the fact he will moderate birth weight, but not moderate weaning weight. His dam is a really nice first calving baldy “Wolfman” going back to “Robin Hood”. This fall when I was delivering sale heifers and touring through cows with Rodney Sargeant, he was telling me what a good job the half- brother to this cow did for them. That bull happened to produce the reserve champion pen of feeder steers at the Calgary Stampede for them. These people feed a lot of cattle and have an outstanding commercial herd. Its bulls like this that only compliment the hard work and effort that great cattlemen already devote into building a superior cow herd. He’s just another piece to anyones growing puzzle.

“King John” is from a full sister to lot #69. I bragged about how much I like the “252R” cow and how she has done a great job for us. I feel as though this young cow could very well write another chapter to her already growing novel. “King John” is a very clean fronted bull that will no doubt be a calving ease sire, maintain growth and add maternal. I would feel confident in using him on any breed of well-developed heifers and be ready to catch a good night’s sleep. Last bull in the catalogue, but certainly not the last bull of the sale.
