Westway Farms Female Sale of the Decade

Page 1

FRIDAY AUGUST 23, 2024

6PM - AT THE FARM - DIDSBURY, AB

On behalf of the Hadway Family …..Welcome to the Female Sale of the Decade at Westway Farms. Ten years ago we had Westway’s Top 50 Female Sale and we haven’t had one since. Why you might ask...it is pretty simple, Tom can’t part with any cows!! Like it’s a big deal to bring the cows to Town so to speak! In true Tom fashion, he has said numerous times in the last few weeks to Andie, you’re not going to sell that one are you?!

When selecting cattle for the Sale of the Decade we did not hold back on what we were going to part with. We believe that we have created a high quality offering of bred heifers, heifer calves and frozen genetics. We are confident that any of the lots in the offering can go on to add value to any program, just like they would to ours if we were retaining them. It is not easy parting with the quality on offer. As many other producers know, these animals are the results of breeding decisions made within the past decade.

While a few things have changed here at Westway the one thing that has not is the importance we place on the maternal strengths of our cow herd. The strict culling list has not changed in the last ten years - good feet, good udders, good dispositions and they must produce quality offspring. We also continue to purchase herdsires that have strong maternal pedigrees to add maternal strength to our program. The WFL cattle are being developed with reproduction and longevity in mind and it is a priority. They are developing on a TMR ration while on grass paddocks.

Raising a cow herd is a wonderful adventure. It is an evolving, exciting process that takes patience. Patience to piece together genetics that will result in cattle that represent all the traits that you feel makes that animal the one. The thing is, the “great one” is always replaced by that next “great one” which is the perfect scenario for raising a cow herd because it just keeps this wonderful adventure going. We hope you are able to find your next great one in this catalog. If you have

any questions please reach out to Andie or Bill and please know you are always welcome to stop by the farm for a tour. We also encourage you to reach out to the Bohrson Marketing Crew for their professional service in evaluating the cattle on offer. We certainly welcome any visitors to Olds for the World Simmental Forum or the National YSC Show to stop by.

We are extremely excited with the offering and the cattle for sale truly represent the Westway Program and all we have strived for the last 28 years. We are so grateful and blessed that our kids are involved with our operation and enjoy the cattle business. Many family meetings take place around the kitchen table looking at sale catalogs and pedigrees, and listening to online sales. Andie and Bill have done a great job selecting and getting these girls ready to look their best on August 23rd. Their passion for our cattle program is evident and our operation is very grateful to have their expertise in the management of our herd.

Juniors please note we have taken the time to halter break the heifer calves. These calves have been blown, washed, and led and would be great 4-H or junior projects. To support you with your junior programs there is a junior incentive offered as outlined on Page 5.

The sale females reflect the Westway breeding program and this is an excellent opportunity for you to purchase some of the genetics Westway has been using. You may have to wait another ten years for another female sale because “the apple didn’t fall far from the tree” when it comes to Andie and Tom! Take advantage of this opportunity while it is here and invest in some genetics to take your program to where you want it to go. Looking forward to seeing you on August 23rd!

The Hadway Family

The Westway Farms Female Sale of the Decade truly allows a great opportunity for progressive programs to access the very elite genetics of one of the top programs in the industry. The last time the WFL brand had a production sale was a decade ago and purchases from that sale made immediate ROI for the successful buyer and are still having a positive impact on those programs because the cattle that carry the WFL prefix are bred for profitability. This sale truly embarks on opportunity of depth of quality and overall strength as we are loaded with quality from a program that often keeps their females locked up tight.

The purebred cattle business is an enjoyable industry to be in and in the end, it is truly the people within it that make it special. The Hadway family has been in the Didsbury area for generations and known as one of the most genuine, hard-working, dedicated and salt of the earth families that we have ever had the pleasure to work alongside and we can recommend to do business here with ease. Truly, some of the nicest people in the business and ones that are dedicated to ensure their customers are happy with their purchases. When you are investing in a WFL female, you are not only getting a high quality product but you are buying it from great people that are committed on doing everything to their best ability, no matter the challenge.

Never has WFL offered as many females as you’ll see in this sale and in most cases, they have kept their female sales limited to very few if

any being offered annually. By offering limited females in the past, it allows them to open up the vault and sell those “hurts to sell” type of females for this one special sale. As you analyze the genetics, they are proven yet outcross to the mainstream bloodlines in the Simmental industry and offer a twist on pedigree in many cases but not giving up shear quality to do so. The bred heifers also carry exciting services that will only boast their profitably and allow you to capitalize on these special genetics. With a special flush and embryo selection on offer, you truly are getting an opportunity to access the WFL brand in a well rounded and impressive sale offering.

This sale will have it all with high quality cattle, awesome hospitality and backed by some of the best people in the industry that are a pleasure to work with. We encourage you to join us on sale day as it will be a fun event that showcases a program that has been breeding excellent stock for multiple decades. If you can’t attend, feel free to contact any of the WFL crew or ourselves at BMS to represent your needs in a professional manner as there truly is something for everyone. We do look forward to seeing you at the beautiful WFL farm east of Didsbury that will surely be an event of the decade for their farm and also the Simmental industry.

I think Andie could say “this is my favorite” about many of these heifer calves but if she had to actually pull a favorite it would likely be this one. Her dam is the only WFL 1044x x Italian daughter we got from the mating. 4032M is long bodied and keeps it in a balanced package with the way her top and bottom lines lay in. She has lots of power which she gets from her dam which is noticed in her big square hip which stands on a good leg. Her dam WFL 1044X Sweet Licious 2012H is a beautiful red cow that has a great amount of middle, held up by a strong top line and finishes it with an attractive front end.

If maternal and longevity is a priority for you then this is a heifer to take a look at! Combining the 2025H donor cow and Mountain View sire who is backed by the 913G donor is going to result in a great amount of ROI. This heifer is as dark as you can make a red one, balanced in terms of her muscle, substance and frame size. She has enough extension through her front end to give her plenty of look to be easily noticed.

What an opportunity to acquire a heifer calf with a pedigree such as 4037M’s who is out of the new Captivate sire and proven 913G donor cow. Sound structured, large framed with a great amount of length. Take an opportunity to get in on the first Captivate females selling in Canada. You’re going to hear a lot more from that sire we are very excited about!

HARMONY 4120M

This one is sure easy to pick out when touring or when she’s tied up in the barn! The amount of rib expression and depth from flank to chest that this one has is hard to achieve. Tie that middle portion in with a big hip and attractive front end and you have one of the best red heifer calves in the sale offering! Impact is going to make a lot of big time females the way he passes down his traits and this is definitely one of them!

Here is one that is built as well as any! This heifer is extremely balanced the way that she flows from head to tail and ties her muscle shape and look into her frame size. Not overwhelming in any area but puts it all together to be the total package! We had been searching for another Betts son for the past two years, and when we came across the BJL Betts 24K bull from Curtis Simmental we knew that we had to own him. He has matured into one of the most attractive young herd bulls that we own and can’t wait for his first calf crop in the 2025 bull sale.

A Centrium sired heifer that you will appreciate for her stoutness. She packs a lot of punch and performance into her frame size and still gives you a beautiful look from the side profile. She’s dark in color, will be an easy keeper while maturing and will end up being an easy fleshing cow. Her dam is a very attractive cow that is wide based and has a good udder under her. Take a look at who her granddam is to boot.

This dark cherry red heifer is closely related to lot 59 above her. She has a great amount of length to her and is flexible on the move. Her red baldy dam is extremely powerful, strong topped and as easy keeping as you can make a first calver for this time of the year. You wont miss this sweetie on sale day!

This Mountain View is the practical kind! Dark red, extremely good lined and grabs some extra punch from her Concept sired dam. Her dam is a moderate female that has a very good udder and very sound on the move.

913G

Here is a typical Mountain View daughter who pairs nicely with Lot 61. We like the length of spine this heifer has, the deep red colour and how stout boned she is. Lots of confidence in this heifer with a pedigree like hers. Her red baldy Reddington dam is as good looking as they come who is backed by the consistent female maker, 9111G.

WFL RED PARKHILL 4044M

64

WFL MISS 4039M

One of the features in the red heifer calves division! She has that big middle shape that we strive to breed for with extra sweep. The way that she ties in her front end gives her that fancy look that would make her a good candidate to show with a quiet disposition to go with it all. Her sire, WFL Western Hauler 138J sold to Conley Cattle and C-4 Land & Cattle in the 2022 bull sale and is a red baldy heifer bull that we are excited to keep using going forward.

A good looking Walk The Line heifer here that is strong topped. She is the result of a group of embryos we had purchased out of the New Years Resolution Sale out of a beautiful, dark red baldy cow from the R Plus program. You know that with the combination of Walk The Line and 5015C she is destined to reproduce some great calves!

The power heifer of the bunch! She is the widest based heifer in the offering and carries that stoutness right up to a big wide top. A definite cow prospect with lots of hair and is one that you know is going to raise a great herd bull at one point in her career. Her dam is the very productive 9111G who has put many bulls through the annual bull sale. 9111G has an extremely high quality set of Reddington flush daughters in production, one which is the dam of Lot 62.

A real peanut here and the youngest girl of the group! This girl is great to handle and has a very quiet disposition. She is dark coloured, heavy haired and flows smoothly from her nice hip shape into a big belly. She is moderate in stature with good muscling which Impact is great at passing down. She is a maternal sister to the heifer above her, lot 65.

If Bill was able to keep one sale heifer calf back from the group this would be it! As practical as you can make one when you think about keeping one around for a long time, and one that has the pieces to breed consistency and soundness. She has the hip and top shape that Captivate breeds onto his progeny that gives her the balance and an extremely attractive look. Her dam is as beautiful as the picture, and is a reason that we went out and sourced a bull with the RSF Bullet Proof in the pedigree this spring.

A neat black Mountain View heifer calf here out of the potent Cream Soda cow family. This one is hard to fault with how consistent she is in her lines and the look she gives you. One that could be a valuable breeding piece with a different pedigree. Her Stepping Stone sired dam is a fault free kind of cow with good feet and udder that produces a good calf every time. Top it off this calf is a sweetheart!

A real intriguing baldy female that is large frame sized with tons of length. She is extremely symmetrical in her top and bottom lines and attractive through her front end. Extra good haired and one that would make a good show prospect for a junior member. Her dam has been a consistent producer leaving us three high quality daughters so far. 902G is a maternal sib to lot 40, a feature black bred in the sale.

20B

This baldy, Betts granddaughter is a tank! Her sire, KT Hires 101H is famous for adding extra punch to his progeny and that’s exactly what he did here. 4117M is the easy keeping kind that carries a ton of substance through her whole build right from her heavy muscled hip, to her rib cage and forerib. She is one of the nicest haired heifer calves in the sale with that fuzzy base hair.

ANDI

A black, Western Hauler sired heifer here that has some stretch. Her sire passed down that good looking, long front end with lots of extension. She’s real lateral in her rib shape, and sound on the move. Her dam is an easy keeping, smaller sized Prime Time daughter.

This one is a unit! She has as much depth of flank and rib shape that you could give one at this point of the game. Strong topped with a great amount of width to her entire build. She’s going to be a nice combination of power and size when mature as she combines the Monarch Sire on a Gold Key Dam.

Here we go, we have left one of the best for last! We think this one is an outlier as she combines one of the best terminal bulls in the Simmental breed, back to a cow sired by an Angus foundation female maker and out of the no need introduction Cream Soda cow family. This one has the right parts to make an elite donor, and one that could go through the show ring. She is as balanced as any heifer in the sale with the way that she combines her power into a good looking feminine package. Her dam is our favorite SimAngus donor in the herd that has raised two notable sale bulls selling to Westman Farms & JK Bar Cattle in 2023 and a son to Rocky Meadow Ranch in 2024.

An opportunity to acquire genetics on our best SimAngus donor female. We all know what SAV Density has done when it comes to making females, and when Mike McDonald flushed Soda Pop 422B that way he made three extremely good SimAngus cows. WHL Cream Soda 1810F has led the charge on production in the SimAngus division here and can make a good one no matter the mating. Buy embryos to the proven mating by 5015C, or embryos sired by our new exciting resident herd sire Black Gold Nobleman that we purchased this spring from our good friends at Black Gold Simmental.

WFL 403B MS ELEGANCE 9111G

An opportunity to acquire genetics on a proven red baldy donor cow. WFL 9072 Red Doll 913G is the dam behind the moderate calving bull WFL Mountain View 4J that was purchased by Black Gold Simmental. She’s dark red in color, balanced in her build with a good udder under her. Her dam WFL Red Doll 9072W was the best red baldy donor cow to ever walk the farm and always competed in production with the great WFL Licious 1044X. 913G continues to produce no matter the mating she is given. Her red baldy heifer calf, lot 56 is proof of that and here is a chance to get a full sibling to that elite heifer calf.

WFL 403B Elegance 9111G is another red baldy donor that has led the way recently in terms of production. She has 12 registered calves to date and her embryos have been very sticky over the years. She is deep from flank to chest, has a beautiful udder under her and is very good looking. Her dam, WFL MS Elegance 403B has been the best producing black baldy female on the farm with 18 registered calves and continues to produce at 10 years of age.
