HEALTH & WELLBEING
Women, Trauma and Mental Health: The Differences between Men and Women By Dr. Charla Waxman BS, MBA, EdD Community Liaison Men and women are affected in very different ways when it comes to mental illness. Each gender is unique in emotions, thoughts, and behaviors and mental health issues are no exception. An example could include physiological and mental health combinations of disorders caused from hormonal changes, like perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, menopausal depression and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Even when men and women have the same diagnoses women may experience those same disorders that males have in ways unique to them. Increasing studies and programs relate specifically to gender and women seem to be of interest for both. One of the reasons for the increased interest in researching and developing women’s mental health programs is the issue and prevalence of trauma among women. Trauma, of course, can occur in anyone’s life and because we are all so different, it can impact any one of us spiritually, emotionally and physically in a multitude of ways. For women the data is dramatic: • According to the National Institute for Mental Illness the prevalence of anxiety and depression is much higher for women than men. • Women who are exposed to trauma are 3-4 times more likely to become depressed (National Institute on Mental Health). • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is experienced at a higher level for women than men and women wait longer (as long as 4 years) than men (about a year) even after significant symptoms arise to seek treatment (World Health Organization). • Women are 10 times more likely than men to be affected by an eating disorder (National Institute for Mental Health). • Stigma for seeking mental health support and treatment is greater among women, especially women of color (John Hopkins). • Serious mental illness is prevalent at a level more than 70% greater in women than in men (National Alliance for Mental Illness). • Women are more likely to experience “comorbid” mental health conditions which is defined as two or more disorders affecting one person. Trauma, like an accident, the death of a loved one, or a serious medical concern can also cause someone to feel depressed or anxious. When women have suffered abuse physically, emotionally or verbally and do not receive treatment or professional support they are at risk for developing mental health conditions. Among these are depression, anxiety and

substance, but PTSD, self-injury, and even an eating disorder would not be uncommon. Of concern would be the potential for suicidal thoughts and feelings and trauma related to abuse could be the central cause. Much research has been done to explore the effect of serving in the military in war-torn areas for both men and women. Although both genders are affected, women who have been through the devastation of war and who are isolated from their children and family, friends and pets may feel anxious or depressed. For both genders PTSD symptoms may arise during or after exposure to war. The pandemic has affected nearly everyone in some way, but women have experienced more guilt during COVID lock-downs as they have tried to balance work and a stay-at-home- family. Having kids without hours at school has created challenges and pressure in the household. As a result, the pressure, loneliness, fear of job loss and loss of a loved one have caused substance use and abuse and depression and anxiety. Issues related to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder have become prevalent with thoughts about how severe cleanliness can prevent the virus. The fear of illness can cause Panic Disorder and women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with it. Many times the symptoms of trauma go unrecognized. As women find it necessary to care for others, they continue to look past the symptoms right in front of them and go on with their very busy lives. For all issues related to mental health, the longer the signs and symptoms are allowed to linger, the harder it is to recover and the longer it takes to feel well and for symptoms to subside. Early recognition and early support equals early recovery. The addition of therapy, sometimes medication, education and skill development can change the course of mental health. Mental health challenges for women are complex. Many kinds of treatment options and resources are available to help women find satisfying relationships, a good job and home-life balance and the chance to lead healthy lives. Most important is being able to simply ask for help. There are many organizations and professionals poised to help women get the treatment and help they need to start on the road to recovery and health. People, women, can and do recover from mental illness. Both men and women can get the help they need at Lake Behavioral Hospital. Women needing support for trauma, perinatal mood disorders, or life’s challenges can receive the help they need in either an acute inpatient setting or in our Intensive Outpatient Program. The Women’s Connection Program, provided as inpatient care, offers special gender-specific groups, activities, and a specially individualized discharge plan. Healing and recovery are possible. Here are some more trends that could possibly increased their total spend per customer, and their ASPs. dominate the technology industry in 2021: Privacy and Confidential Computing It involves the encryption of the entire computing process and not only the data. This creates extra layers of security that help to protect sensitive information. We should expect more of privacy and confidential computing in action come 2021. Smart Work from Home Technologies Recent changes shifted the way we do things and carry out business. Initially, it would be radical to allow employees to work from home on a large scale. Even when employees were asking for enhanced work flexibility, it was never to be. The current trends have led to the common acceptance of the work from home formulas. We have seen many tech giants extending the work from home flexibility to their staff. Some like Twitter have even given their employees the option of working from home entirely for the rest of their working careers. Part of what made all this a reality is the deployment of smart work from home tools such as WebEx, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. Such apps have witnessed massive usage over the past few months, and this is expected to continue even in 2021. Artificial Intelligence AI has continued to improve operations for many companies and businesses. We have seen how AI has helped in the suggestions customers get when shopping on Amazon, or even when they are watching movies on Netflix. Hyperautomation Robotic process automation(RPA) was a major technology tool that companies have had their focus on. Now, it has moved from task-based automation to process-based automation. The magnitude of automation is set to go even higher as Hyperautomation increases in the coming year. Distributed Cloud This involves the spreading of public cloud services to different physical locations. However, the evolution, governance, and operations of the services remain at the public cloud provider. By 2025, Gartner predicts that most cloud service providers will provide a number of distributed cloud services. Device Form Factors The current customer needs include small, light, and effective devices. Therefore, manufacturers are heading to the call by providing hybrid devices that double up as phones and tablets. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 does this quite well. 2021 will see a return of stronger and more efficient folding and unfolding devices. Quantum Computing As people continue to realize the power of quantum computing, we are more likely to witness its application in many industries in 2021 and beyond. Anywhere Operations This IT operating model supports customers everywhere. It also enables employees anywhere in addition to enabling the deployment of business services across distributed infrastructure.
