Full Steam Ahead It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but it already feels like Christmas is bearing down on us unprepared shoppers like a gift- and cookie-laden freight train. Thankfully, if the deluge of digital and big box store ads is getting you down, Boise Weekly is here with a shopping guide filled with beautiful, practical and quirky presents that hail right from your own backyard. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again—shopping locally is more than a trend, it’s a best practice for supporting your friends and neighbors, and keeping funds close to home. Plus, we’re making it easy! We’ve split the gifts in this year’s guide into five categories: The Adventurer (for thrill-seekers), The Idahomebody (for the Boise-proud), The Culture Junkie (for fans of the arts, pop culture and more), The Family Plan (for those with a full house) and The Friend Who Has Everything (for—well, you get it). Simply pick the description that best fits your giftee, whether they’re a friend, co-worker or member of the family, and flip to it to get shopping! We’ve also got one more trick up our sleeve to streamline the experience, just in case you’re short of time for browsing. Glance to your right, and you’ll see a flowchart designed to direct you to the perfect gift in your price range based on who you’re shopping for. The process couldn’t be simpler, and it will offer you three ideas in a snap. That said, we’d of course love for you to check out every page of this guide. From Flying M’s unicorn-shaped neon desk lamp and Re-Pop Gifts’ package of all things Harry Potter, to Ballet Idaho’s The Nutcracker tickets and Snake River Farms’ baskets of steaks (yes, you read that right), you’re sure to find something perfect that you didn’t even know to look for. Happy shopping! —Lex Nelson

Dear Readers, What would Boise Weekly like this holiday season? The same thing we asked for last year: you. FRESHLY ROASTED We could dream of all of Santa’s toys and trinkets, but none could compare to your affection and loyalty. In fact, we consider you to be more much than just someone who reads BW. You’re our friend. Our special bond reminds us that, together, we’re always better when we embrace new ideas, respect a diversity of opinions, welcome new friendships and celebrate a wide variety of cultures.

We use locally roasted coffee that's sourced sustainably with careful attention paid to the supply chain, allowing us to champion the social and environmental initiatives of the farms and communities represented.

We hope you have an absolutely grand holiday season; but do try to take care of yourself. We’ll need you strong and healthy for 2019. We wouldn’t dare try to take on another year without you. To you and all that you hold dear, we wish you joy, peace, warmth and much love.

— George Prentice, Editor

CAREFULLY CRAFTED We take our craft seriously. We love the art of brewing coffee and strive to focus that passion to bring you the best cup possible. We want the coffee’s to take center stage and develop recipe’s that showcase the natural attributes of the bean.

Made Possible By Love Whether through Pending Coffee or by joining forces with local non-profits, we want to make an impact that goes beyond coffee. People are the reason that we got into this business and it’s the people that have made all of this possible. We love to partner with our community to advance the cause of love, one cup at a time.

Boise’s Bountiful Bazaars Wintry Market is a gem in Boise’s holiday market scene JEANNE HUFF, IDAHO PRESS

I

ndie Made. Etsy. Pinterest. There’s been a slow but steady rise in homemade clothing, jewelry, furniture—you name it. And in order to satisfy the increased numbers of homemade-hungry shoppers, there’s been a rise in artists, crafters and makers. “It’s what you used to think your grandma used to do,” said Amy Pence-Brown. “There’s been a resurgence of younger, hipper makers, putting their own funky twist on it.” Pence-Brown and Kristin Montgomery got together in 2010 to talk about launching a holiday bazaar for indie makers. “There was this burgeoning scene of indie crafters in Boise who didn’t have a place to sell,” PenceBrown said.

They put their heads together—Pence-Brown’s background includes a stint at Boise Art Museum, Montgomery comes from the world of interior design and architecture, and both have business experience—culled their contacts, scraped up some money for necessities and sweet-talked themselves into a venue, for free. “The very first one was at Ballet Idaho,” said PenceBrown. “They let us borrow some of their practice space. We had about 30 vendors.” This year is Wintry Market has more than 60 vendors. While most are local, they’re also bringing in artists and makers from Montana, Oregon and Washington for the first time. The regional artists will help bring a freshness to the market, they said. ery added that they look for diversity, then pick artists for variety and quality. “We have guidelines. We curate the show, you don’t automatically get in,” said Pence-Brown. Everything at Wintry Market also has to be handmade. And while it’s organizers no longer get their space for free, they also don’t require a percentage of their vendors’ take. “We take zero commission,” said PenceBrown. “We do charge a booth fee and that’s to pay for overhead costs, rent for the space, marketing, professional photography, and we pay for an artist to create the posters and we pay printers.” In 2017, Food and Wine magazine named Wintry Market the best holiday bazaar in Idaho. Pence-Brown said one trendy item this year is “really artsy jewelry” made out of unusual materials such as clay, wood, recycled plastic, bone, metal and recycled skateboards. “It’s amazing,” said Montgomery. Shoppers can also expect to find everything from kids’ toys, men’s handmade beard products and T-shirts to furniture and more. Prices start as low as $2, and “nothing is more than $200,” said Pence-Brown. “A lot of people come to local bazaars to buy all their holiday purchases,” Pence-Brown said. “You can find things you can’t find at the mall.”
