YOUR SHARED MEMORY OF RIDING MORNING STAR MIGHT WIN YOU A CHAIR One lucky skier’s fond memories of riding the now-retired Morning Star Chairlift at Bogus Basin could win that person a piece of history: one of the lift’s iconic chairs. The Morning Star Chairlift Story Contest, in which entrants share their memories of riding the lift in stories of no more than 250 words, runs until Sunday, June 2. Entrants must be at least 18 years old, entries are limited to one submission per person, and photos are optional, but not required. The winner will be selected by a panel of celebrity judges, including Bogus Basin is asking people to share their stories about the MornBetsy Russell of the Idaho Press, ing Star chairlift for a chance to win one of its chairs. revealed on Friday, June 7. At the end of its 2018-2019 ski season, Bogus Basin announced that, after 50 years, the Morning Star Chairlift (Chair No. 2) would be replaced with a high-speed quad chairlift. The Morning Star lift began coming down in April, and earlier this month, 30 of the chairs went to the highest bidders in an online auction, bringing in more than $75,000 to the nonprofit. Another of the chairs was a grand prize in a special Idaho Gives Day raffle. Now, Bogus officials are asking people to share their stories for a chance to win a unique piece of memorabilia. Additionally, a number of the entries are expected to be shared via social media. ow many surveys have placed Boise at or near the top of lists of best places to live? Honestly, we’ve lost count. Just a couple of months ago, the City of Trees landed on Livability.com’s 2019 Top 100 Places to Live rankings. In fact, the survey ranked Boise No. 1 when compared to more than 1,000 other cities with populations between 20,000 and 1 million. “Young families are drawn to Boise because it’s one of the safest cities in the world,” wrote the survey’s authors. “Boise has become a magnet for people looking for a tight-knit community, great job opportunities, easy access to the outdoors and, perhaps most importantly, a much lower cost of living than many larger and comparably sized cities.” We’re not entirely certain that every Boisean would agree with that “lower cost of living” comment, which is currently a white-hot topic of debate. It’s a fact that housing prices are rising: The median list price for a Boise home is somewhere around $350,000,

and median rent in Boise is about $1,395 per month. Indeed, there are many differing opinions on what Boise officials like to call “smart growth.” But truth be told, our favorite thing to do each year is to celebrate Boise: embrace its past, celebrate the present and look to our collective future with great anticipation. So, with a full heart, Boise Weekly proudly presents our 2019 edition of Best of Boise. A record-setting number of nominations and votes (300,000plus) were cast during this year’s BOB’s balloting process. And for that, we give great thanks to you, dear reader. Time and again, you make the Best of Boise happen. True, there’s only one winner in each category, but rest assured, tens of thousands of voters weighed in on Boise’s best. Is BOB the ultimate arbiter of taste? Of course not. Is it a sincere expression of affection for what makes Boise so special? You bet. —George Prentice, Editor

In 2008, Boise Weekly wrote about Hannifin’s as it celebrated its 100th year on the corner of Main and 11th streets. Now, 11 years later, the cigar store is still quietly puffing away, enthroned forever as Boise’s Best Smoke shop. Of course, it’s not nearly as cynical as that: Since its opening, Hannifin’s has prided itself on offering the Treasure Valley’s best selection of cigars, cigarettes and pipe tobacco, with more than 100 different brands on its shelves. Step inside, and it’s as if the clocks have been turned back to the era when Grease was happening, and smoking was still what the cool kids did. “It makes me feel good that there’s a lot of history and a lot of people love coming here and seeing that it exists,” Robert Guerrero, the shop’s then-new owner, said back in ‘08. “And though some things have changed, many things have not.” As cigars and cigarettes are increasingly beset be e-cigarettes, and those in turn face tightening restrictions from lawmakers, Hannifin’s remains a smoker’s port in the storm.

THE RECORD EXCHANGE Opened in 1977, The Record Exchange is a true Boise original and a beacon to music lovers everywhere. It is also currently the largest store of its kind in Idaho, and an increasingly rare bird: an independent record store. That last bit is a real point of pride for the folks who work there, and for its customers. The RX helped establish and keep the tradition of Independent Record Store Day, which just celebrated its 12th-annual event, and it has been a staunch ally of music institutions like Treefort Music Fest, regularly hosting in-store live performances, album release parties. Its knowledge and stock of local recording artists is unparalleled. Since the inception of the Best of Boise contest, The RX has owned its orbit in the Best Record Store category, ultimately earning its place among the Lifetime Achievement award-winners. THE FLICKS From its position high above the foothills, Bogus Basin looks down on the City of Boise like a proud parent—and for years, Boiseans have beamed right back. Considered Boise’s very own ski resort at just 16.5 miles out of town, Bogus sees tens of thousands of visitors each year, particularly now that summer innovations like live music, hiking and biking trails, and even a roller coaster have made it a year-round attraction. Still, winter is when Bogus is most beloved, as skiers, snowboarders and tubers pack their trucks with gear to take advantage of its 91 named runs and 37,000 groomed Nordic trails. The resort gets 200-250 inches of natural snow each year, then tops it off with powder from its own snowmaking machines. As if all that weren’t enough to earn the ski hill Lifetime Achievement status, Bogus is also a nonprofit that has operated under an allvolunteer board since 1942. As long as Boiseans can still climb mountains, Bogus’ spot in their hearts (and on this list) is safe.

During one of Boise Weekly’s countless visits to The Flicks one Saturday evening, we chatted up a few of the hundreds of customers who streamed through the door to share a glass of wine or beer, order some mouth-watering food (on that particular evening, homemade pasta e fagioli was simmering on the stove) and settle down for a screening of an Oscar-caliber film. “If you love movies, you love The Flicks,” one patron told us. “Actually, there are other movie theaters closer to where we live, but look at us. We’re all settled in with a glass of wine and a fabulous film. It’s all… well, it’s a lovely way to spend an evening, isn’t it?” And there you have Exhibit A of why voters have, for every year we’ve had a Best of Boise competition, chosen The Flicks as the best of the best when it comes to cinema entertainment. We also unabashedly adore owner Carole Skinner and her amazing staff and volunteers, who make an evening at The Flicks such a pleasure. If there was an Oscar for Best Cinema, The Flicks would most assuredly take home a gold statue. BOISE WEEKLY.COM

BEST LOCAL ARCHITECTURAL TREASURE EGYPTIAN THEATRE Since 1927, The Egyptian Theatre has been a tentpole of Boise architecture, with a huge, painted theater area and old-timey pipe organ, and for as long as anyone has kept track, it has been one of Boise’s most treasured landmarks. A classic movie palace, it is now the staging ground for Boise favorites like Boise Classic Movies, Opera Idaho and silent films accompanied by live music performances. egytiantheatre.net 2ND PLACE: Boise Depot, facebook. com/theboisedepot 3RD PLACE: Capitol Building, capitolcommission.idaho.gov 10 | MAY 29 – JUNE 4, 2019 | BOISEWEEKLY

BEST HOME SWEET HOME Whether you’re an art collector or just like to keep an eye on the local newsreel, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the name “James Castle” bandied about at least once in the past year. If not, it’s about time we fill you in: Castle was an Idahoborn artist who lived in Boise from 1931 until his death in 1977, churning out work in a range of unconventional media, including a combination of spit, soot and scrap paper. Born deaf and considered an “outsider artist,” Castle’s work didn’t gain national attention until 1951, but today he’s one of the most well-known names in the Gem State artistic canon. To honor his legacy and preserve his work, the Boise City Department of Arts and History bought his family home at 5015 Eugene St. in 2015 and turned it into a combination gallery, shop and residence for visiting artists that opened to the public in 2018. Less than a year later, in March of 2019, the spot was added to the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program, joining such notable spots as The Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio in New Mexico and the Thomas Cole National Historic Site in New York, and making it an enduring feather in Boise’s cap. —Lex Nelson

BEST LOCAL BAND BUILT TO SPILL Through decades and lineup changes, Built to Spill remains an enduring jewel of Boise’s music scene, one of the city’s most popular exports and a perennial crowdpleaser at Treefort Music Fest. BEST BROADWAY IMPORT It won’t be until the Morrison Center’s 2020-2021 theater season, but Boise is already buzzing about the Broadway smash Hamilton coming to the City of Trees. Broadway in Boise subscribers who renew their seasons tickets at the end of the 2019-2020 season will get the first crack at tickets for the musical, which won 11 Tony awards and continues to play to sold-out theaters on the Great White Way. As for the 20192020 season, some impressive Broadway imports are on tap, including Waitress, The Play That Goes Wrong, A Christmas Story, Bandstand and a return visit from The Book of Mormon. Hamilton will undoubtedly be one more in a long line of theatrical juggernauts that have sold out the Morrison, including The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King and multiple engagements of Wicked. —George Prentice BOISE WEEKLY.COM

BEST READING LIST In late April, Jennifer Egan, the bestselling author of A Visit from the Goon Squad and Manhattan Beach, was in Boise for The Cabin’s Readings & Conversations series, and people walking out of the event said they were impressed by her stories and presence. They were also buzzing about the next round of authors, which The Cabin Executive Director Kurt Zwolfer announced from the stage like a trailer for the next Star Wars movie. The Readings & Conversations series has become known for attracting famous, critically acclaimed and sometimes notorious novelists, poets and journalists. They come to tell their stories, read their work and answer questions from the audience. For its 2019-2020 season, The Cabin will use the Morrison Center twice: for TaNehisi Coates (Monday, Oct. 7) and Ann Patchett (Tuesday, Oct. 15). Coates has written journalism for The Atlantic (“Donald Trump Is the First White President”); a book-length open letter to his son, Between the World and Me; and Marvel Comics’ Black Panther. KTVB, CHANNEL 7 True, there are multiple television stations in Boise, but the medium burns brightest on the ratings powerhouse that is Channel 7. As one of our readers wrote, “They’re simply the best. They have the best anchors and the best stories.” Yes, we’re going to miss veteran news anchor Dee Sarton (her final day on the air will be Thursday, June 6), but co-anchors Mark Johnson and Kim Fields are akin to trusted members of the family. KTVB has come out on top of this category for 20 straight years. ktvb.com 2ND PLACE: Idaho Public Television, idahoptv.org 3RD PLACE: KIVI, Channel 6, kivitv.com

BOISE BICYCLE PROJECT BBP is king of Boise’s bike community, doing everything from organizing pedal-powered events to tuning up rides.
BEST ATHLETIC STORE IDAHO MOUNTAIN TOURING In a highly competitive category, Idaho Mountain Touring has once again emerged as Best of Boise voters’ favorite athletic store. A downtown fixture since 1984, IMT has grown considerably over the decades. Along the way, owners Chris and Jill Haunold and their talented staff have helped Boiseans evolve as well. BEST BIKE SHOP BOISE BICYCLE PROJECT Boise Bicycle Project has changed hundreds of lives by putting bicycles in the deserving hands of the economically challenged. But BBP is also very well respected for its top-notch bike shop. From a simple flat fix to a full-tilt rebuild, BBP has the tools and the staff to get the job done. What makes BBP so unique is that its full-service shop also functions as a nonprofit cooperative, giving it a community focus. boisebicyleproject.com 2ND PLACE: George’s Cycles, georgescycles.com 3RD PLACE: Idaho Mountain Touring, idahomountaintouring.com
BEST RIDE Just before Halloween in 2018, Boise Weekly got to run this headline: “Man Dressed as Dinosaur, Woman Dressed as Rainbow Brite Trigger First e-Scooter-Related Police Report.” In the incident, the costumed man and woman were both riding the same e-scooter when the man fell off, striking and injuring a woman using a crosswalk near the corner of Sixth and Front streets. The incident had all the ingredients necessary to stir up the conversation already swirling around e-scooters in the City of Trees, from frivolity and fun to rule-breaking and injury. The devices first hit the streets in late 2018, when two companies, Lime and Bird, loosed their flocks of battery-powered scooters, immediately garnering love and enmity. Bird and Lime operated under the auspices of a package of ordinances, passed by the Boise City Council in mid-2018, which limited the number of e-scooter companies to three, with each franchisee allowed to deploy a maximum of 250 e-scooters. Since then, they’ve become the darlings of everyone from men in business suits to teenagers ignoring the minimum age rules in the terms of service. In April 2019, a third (and final) e-scooter vendor, San Francisco-based Spin, made its debut in Boise. So far, the e-scooters have been well-received despite a handful of mishaps. Later in the summer of 2019, the Boise City Council will revisit those ordinances and hear about possible changes. —Harrison Berry BOISE WEEKLY.COM

BEST BOARD SHOP THE BOARD ROOM This summer, Boise will once again host an X Games qualifier; but long before the X Games even began, The Board Room was in the eye of the hurricane for Boise skateboarders and snowboarders. Established in 1995 and still located at the State Street gateway to downtown, The Board Room remains the crown jewel of the city’s boarding scene. In 2017, it opened a second shop in McCall, but Boise still considers The Board Room its very own. boardroomboise.com 2ND PLACE: Greenwood’s Ski Haus, greenwoodsskihaus.com 3RD PLACE: Idaho River Sports, idahoriversports.com
BEST GOLF COURSE WARM SPRINGS GOLF COURSE One Best of Boise voter put it perfectly: “Warm Springs is the everyman’s course.” Indeed, you’ll see folks from nearly all walks of life strolling the gorgeous City of Boise-owned course that hugs Warm Springs Boulevard. The 18-hole championship course, shaded by mature trees, is minutes from downtown Boise and showcases spacious fairways, welltended greens and, of course, the Boise River, which flows right alongside the fairways. warmspringsgolfcourse.com 2ND PLACE: Quail Hollow Golf Course, quailhollowboise.com 3RD PLACE: Shadow Valley Golf Course, shadowvalley.com
BEST LOCAL SPORTS TEAM BOISE STATE BRONCOS (FOOTBALL) Was there really any question here? Sure, we like basketball, baseball, hockey, tennis and golf. But Boise loves the Broncos. The Boise State football squad continues to be part of the national sports debate each fall, and on game day, so many people fill Bronco Stadium that it could unofficially become a modest-sized Idaho city (if only for a day). The coaches and the players come and go, but Boise really loves its blue turf. With nearly three months before next season’s kickoff, USA Today and ESPN are already predicting that Boise State should be part of the New Year’s Day bowl game conversation. In December of 2017, Boise State University joined the National Association of Collegiate Esports—in other words, it started fielding teams of varsity videogamers. These sports are booming nationally, spurred on by surveys like one conducted by Limelight Networks showing that more 18- to 25-year-old men are watching eSports than traditional sports. Some companies, like the research firm Statista, project the value of the industry will surpass $1 billion this year. In that virtual melee, Boise State’s eSports team is thriving, and the university has already hosted events in its special eSports arena in the Venture College that have brought in gamers from across the country. In 2018, Boise State’s Overwatch team captain, Maggie Borland, made national headlines as one of the only women in the world to head a collegiate eSports team, and in April of this year, Boise State gamers Miles Herget, Matt Ness and Oscar Filson, playing Rocket League, beat out eight other teams from the region to win the Mountain West Spring Classic for the second year in a row. Looking to the future, we’ve only got one thing to say: Game on. —Lex Nelson
BEST OUTDOOR GEAR STORE OUTDOOR EXCHANGE Outdoor Exchange’s catchphrase says it all: “Gear up and get out for less.” Best of Boise voters agreed, putting the Linen District shop at the top of the list. BEST WHEELS OF FORTUNE There are several summertime must-dos in the City of Trees: floating the river, climbing to Table Rock, sharing a bottle of wine at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and rocking out at Outlaw Field among them. But near the top of our list is the annual Twilight Criterium—a full day of cycling around Boise’s downtown core, capped by a just-before-sunset thrillfest from professional cyclists. The day of events includes a masters (for riders 40 and older), and amateur and even celebrity bike races. Our favorite is the traditional kids ride, where the next generation of racers circles the Idaho Statehouse alongside three-time Olympic gold medalist and Boise native Kristin Armstrong. This year’s Twilight Criterium is slated for Saturday, July 13. —George Prentice
BEST SKI SHOP GREENWOOD’S SKI HAUS For more than a decade, Best of Boise voters have chosen Greenwood’s as the best in town. “If you need it, they’ve got it,” one voter told us. BEST DOORSTEP SHOPPING Home delivery of groceries is pretty old-school. Ask your grandparents and they’ll fondly recall a time when the neighborhood grocer would deliver your items to your doorstep. Pharmacies too. Ah, the good old days. Well, everything old is new again. Indeed, Albertsons, Boise Co-op, Fred Meyer and Whole Foods each now offer some kind of service to bring your produce, meats, dairy, baked goods and you name it to your home. True, there’s a delivery fee attached (and that fee climbs higher if you want your groceries sooner than later), but competition is so stiff right now in the Treasure Valley that grocers are fighting tooth-and-nail for your money. Even Walmart is pushing its free online grocery ordering service, which doesn’t require much more than pulling into a drivthru lane where an employee helps pack your items into your vehicle. —George Prentice

For just under a year, a lot of people in Boise’s East End neighborhood thought the Roosevelt Market, the longtime bodega across the street from the elementary school of the same name, would share the fate of so many historic Boise locations, becoming the site of yet another condo or chain coffee shop. Then, something miraculous happened. The property owners announced they would reopen the Roosevelt Market in November 2019 under new management: Dave “DK” and Sarah Kelly, formerly of Bleubird and currently of Petite 4, a Frenchinspired bistro on the Boise Bench. The new, improved Roosevelt will sell many of the same products as its predecessor, but will also offer Bleubird-inspired sandwiches, meat and cheese boards, prepared foods, baked goods and throwback penny candies for school children. At a launch party in April, DK and Sarah handed out Sarah’s award-winning chocolate chip cookies and milk, and talked about the ins and outs of their arrangement with owners Pamela Lemley and Jill Simplot, like a stipend to hire staff and management so that they can run the Roosevelt three to four days a week without sacrificing Petite 4. —Harrison Berry BOISE WEEKLY.COM

EDWARDS GREENHOUSE For more than a decade, Edwards has been firmly planted at the top of Boise’s list.
BEST NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S ALLIANCE Idaho loves its nonprofits. Proof positive was this year’s edition of Idaho Gives, which saw donations to 589 charitable organizations. And in the Treasure Valley, we have a particular space in our hearts for the Women’s and Children’s Alliance which, for more than a century, has provided safety, healing and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault. The WCA offers shelter, transitional housing, care management, court advocacy, safety planning, financial literacy and two 24hour hotlines—one for domestic abuse and another for rape crisis—to our most vulnerable neighbors. wcaboise.org 2ND PLACE: Idaho Humane Society, idahohumanesociety.org 3RD PLACE: Boise Bicycle Project, boisebicylceproject.org 28 | MAY 29 – JUNE 4, 2019 | BOISEWEEKLY
BEST NURSERY OR GARDENING STORE EDWARDS GREENHOUSE Established in 1930, Edwards has topped Best of Boise’s Best Nursery/ Gardening Store category for more than a decade. Voters told us, “They have the best selections and their folks are so knowledgeable and kind.” Indeed, Boiseans turn to Edwards to make their holidays, anniversaries, birthdays and special occasions that much more fabulous. And now that it’s gardening season, Edwards is one of the busiest spots in town. One Best of Boise voter told us, “I board my dog at Compansions four or five times a month, and they’re always so wonderful to her. It’s amazing. Her little tail begins wagging as soon as she walks through the door.” This is another very competitive category but, once again, Companions has taken the crown. Companions’ owners say they always “choose quality over quantity,” which is why their dog limit is about a third the size of other boarding facilities. It’s also why readers tell us that the increased level of care ranks Companions No. 1. compansionsdogresort.com

In New York City, practically every street corner is home to a bodega—a small grocery store where neighbors can pick up everything from snacks and sandwiches to toilet paper, toothpaste and ibuprofen—but out west, the institution of shopping small in the city has taken much longer to catch on. In the last year, however, Boise has experienced something of a bodega boom. First to open its doors was JD’s Bodega, a spot on Capitol Boulevard across from City Hall that’s like a marriage of grab-and-go cafe and high-end gas station (without the gas), where owner Josh Davis puts local products on a pedestal. Next to welcome customers was The Benchmark Bodega, a quirky shop on Overland Road that caters to nearby subdivisions with a selection of bulk tea, coffee, beer, wine and gift items. Bodega Boise, which opened this April near the intersection of 10th and Main streets, completed the trifecta. Its black-and-white space boasts not just food and drinks but pinball machines for kids and household staples that citydwellers can rely on in a pinch. So far, the City of Trees has welcomed the influx with open arms, making it a good bet that another bodega will pop up soon. It’s time to stake your money on which corner will be next to change hands. —Lex Nelson BOISE WEEKLY.COM

BEST BAKERY ZEPPOLE Zeppole Baking Company has taken the Best Bakery crown nearly every year since 2010, and for the last seven years it has been on a solid, flour-powered winning streak. One voter cited the bakery’s “delicious bread and cookies” as worthy of the top spot, but really, everything at Zeppole deserves the nod, from its soft-centered brutti rolls to its deliciously tangy sourdough batard, not to mention sweet breads like the chocolate-cranberry levain, which no Christmas would be right without. zeppolebakery.com 2ND PLACE: Pastry Perfection, pastryperfection.com 3RD PLACE: Janjou Patisserie, janjou.com 34 | MAY 29 – JUNE 4, 2019 | BOISEWEEKLY

There are a hundred reasons to dine out in downtown Boise. But there’s one really good reason not to do it every night of the week: It can be a budgetbuster. That’s why we’re such huge fans of Downtown Boise Restaurant Week. In fact, we still think it’s a bit too under-the-radar. We’ve lost count of the times that we’ve had readers complain that they missed Restaurant Week, which will celebrate its ninth year in 2019. The concept is simple: For 10 glorious days, more than 20 participating restaurants curate a special prix fixe menu in any of five categories, including twocourse lunches for $10, two-course dinners for $15, three-course dinners for $30-$35 and fine dining dinners (that normally would cost three figures) for $39-$55. Restaurant Week is traditionally held on the final week of October, often extending into the first few days of November. It’s the perfect way to sample some of Boise’s best restaurants. So, start working up that appetite. —George Prentice

BEST EDIBLE UPGRADE Though it’s only halfway done, 2019 has already been a big year for Boise’s outdoor markets. In February, the Boise Farmers Market announced that it would move from its longstanding home at the corner of 10th and Grove streets to a new, much bigger location with abundant parking: the site of an abandoned Kmart at 1500 Shoreline Drive, just off Americana Boulevard. Since April, market devotees have been shopping for their fresh produce, meat and dairy at the Shoreline location, enjoying a handful of new vendors and a “Market Bee” school bus-turned-shuttle that ferries passengers to the Capital City Public Market in downtown Boise every 15 minutes. Capital City, too, is thriving, and celebrated its 25th anniversary on Eighth Street this year by adding dozens of new vendors to its roster. It also innovated with a mini-market each month at JUMP during First Thursdays, and a Wednesday evening market on 34th Street in Garden City. Because of the changes to both markets, people have more ways— and places—than ever to fill their reusable bags with the best Boise has to offer. —Lex Nelson

BEST KUNA RESTAURANT BEST KOREAN K-FUSION BBQ & GRILL
ENRIQUE’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT
Diners get the real Korean experience at K-Fusion, and that means no skimping on the spice. “When you ask them to go four [stars], it’s some of the spiciest food you can find in town, and I appreciate that,” wrote one BW reader. You can also count on the Broadway Avenue eatery for pipedin K-pop, killer karaoke and, of course, all of the authentic Korean food (from recipes passed down through six generations) that you can eat. k-fusion.com
Last fall, Enrique’s did just about the only thing it could to better itself: It moved to a larger location so that even more hungry, happy customers could pack in for top-notch Mexican food. Now situated in the Sandstone building just a block away from its 20-year location on Main Street, the eatery has tripled in size, and BW’s readers appreciate the extra space to chow down on linguica, sip cocktails and load their plates at the famous blue-lit buffet. enriqueskuna.com

BEST NEW BLOOD For BW’s April Fool’s story, we wrote about the Boise Co-op’s plan to sell a line of CBD products—but the biggest news of the year for the North End grocery store is no joke. It now has a chief executive officer (its first ever) and a brand new culinary director. CEO Michelle Andersen joined the team in February after a stint at Starbucks; and her former co-worker at Sustainable Restaurant Group, Jin Yang, became the Co-op’s new culinary director in March. Yang, named one of the world’s most innovative sustainable chefs by Uproxx, brought with him a grab bag of ideas for making the grocery more environmentally friendly, and has been revamping recipes, cutting down on allergens in prepared foods and spearheading the reduction of nonrecyclable packaging like clamshell containers since he came on board. In an interview, Andersen refused to answer questions about her former Starbucks boss Howard Schultz’s rumored 2020 presidential run, but instead dropped one of the biggest food-related news items of the year when she said the Co-op is working on something big—possibly a third location. —Harrison Berry

BEST SUDS EQUITY It’s time we raise our glasses to the ladies. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, it’s become more clear than ever that Boise is home to a mass of beer-loving women who want to make their voices heard and have their palates given their due. Events like all-women beer tastings and showcases deliberately highlighting female beer reps have proliferated in the last year, helped along by groups like Boise Girls Pint Out, a 4-year-old beer drinking group for women that has more than 1,000 followers on Facebook and hosts tastings, trivia nights and brewing get-togethers. “I have a husband that’s in his own beer club, so I guess I wanted to have my own outlet to go and be able to explore beer, and to be able to share my love of it with other women,” BGPO co-founder Kristin Montgomery told BW. Though we found that many of those women are still fighting stereotypes about what “ladies” like to drink, they’re not letting that pushback slow them down, and now have a presence in the local industry at all points in the process, from growing and manufacturing hops to brewing and drinking. “I think it’s become a little bit more taboo to go, ‘Oh, a girl in the beer industry, huh?’” said Kerry Caldwell, the quality assurance manager at Mother Earth Brew Co. in Nampa. “Even if people think it, they aren’t so comfortable saying it anymore.” In 2019, it’s ladies night every night in Boise. —Lex Nelson BOISEWEEKLY | MAY 29 – JUNE 4, 2019 | 53

RED FEATHER LOUNGE Red Feather has a long list of inventive drinks and a total mastery of classic cocktails.
BEST COCKTAILS BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE In the 1970s and ‘80s, Boise mulled bulldozing the city block at the corner of Main Street and Capitol Boulevard to build a shopping mall. The idea was supported by some city leaders, but atrocious to their wives, who so loved the Egyptian Theatre (which has been at that site since 1927) that they managed to get the Sphinx’s share of the plan scrapped. In May of this year, the love of the Egyptian and other historic theaters across the Gem State struck again when Gov. Brad Little signed HB 157 into law. Henceforth, the 13 operating theaters built in the Gem State before 1950 (and listed on the National Register of Historic Places) will be able to sell beer and wine on a retail basis without clearing the design rules applied to newer theaters. According to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Mat Erpelding, the rules surrounding beer and wine licensure for older theaters were vague and prohibitive. Removing roadblocks to their profitability will keep adult beverages in the hands of whomever wants them, and ensure Idaho’s historic theaters survive for future generations. —Harrison Berry 54 | MAY 29 – JUNE 4, 2019 | BOISEWEEKLY

BARDENAY RESTAURANT & DISTILLERY There’s nothing like distilling your own liquor to put yourself on a town’s bar map. That’s the story of Bardenay, which was America’s first restaurant-distillery, meaning that it makes and pours its own spirits. TAPHOUSE It offers plenty of taps and most definitely has the game on the big screen.
BEST SPORTS BAR TAPHOUSE Home to the Hawks, Steelheads and Broncos, Boise is passionate about sports, and thanks to its centralized downtown location, deep tap list and, of course, glut of TVs, Taphouse took the top spot on this year’s Best Sports Bar list. In fact, voters have chosen Taphouse has their favorite sports bar for five years in a row. taphouseboise. com 2ND PLACE: Parilla Grill, parillagrillhydepark.com 3RD PLACE: Legends, legendspubandgrill.com
BEST STRIP CLUB SPEARMINT RHINO GENTLEMEN’S CLUB Last year, there was a shakeup in this category, when Spearmint Rhino Gentlemen’s Club edged past The Torch to become Boise’s Best Strip Club. BEST TRIVIA NIGHT SPACEBAR ARCADE Boise is a haven for outdoor recreation, but it’s an indoor sport—trivia—that has become one of the most popular, and some bars around town have wrapped their homespun trivia nights into their brands the way other watering holes call themselves sports bars. For as long as Spacebar has been doing trivia nights, it has been doing them right, a move that put the underground bar and arcade at the top of this year’s list. As one voter put it, “They need a bigger space, but I still like their brand of trivia best.” facebook.com/ spacebararcade 2ND PLACE: Edge Brewing, edgebrew.com 3RD PLACE: Lost Grove Brewing, lostgrovebrewing.com
BEST RECYCLED BREW At first, we were taken aback when someone told us us about using recycled wastewater for beer. But the more we learned, the more impressed we were with an initiative dubbed Pure Water Brew Boise. The recycled wastewater is “cleaned up” with heavy treatment, and brewers add calcium and other minerals back into the H2O. The water comes out even cleaner than the water from our kitchen faucets. True, it’s a bit of a challenge to tell people that they’re drinking what could once have been toilet water, but Colin Hickman, spokesman for the City of Boise Department of Public Works told us, “When it’s beer, for some reason the same ‘ick factor’ doesn’t exist.” So far, Barbarian Brewing, LongDrop Cider, Lost Grove Brewing and Mad Swede Brewing have participated. —George Prentice

Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo is pure fun. Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel and David “Dave-1″ Macklovitch have called themselves the “only successful Arab/ Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture,” and have trained their listeners to expect the unexpected. Their style is epitomized in the music video for the catchy 2018 single, “Juice.” We don’t want to spoil the twist, but let’s just say it involves tight red skirts, sexy legs and lots of freshsqueezed citrus. “I like being on that edge of, ‘Are they serious? Are they joking? Are they earnest? Are they tongue-in-cheek? Are they music nerds or are they just two goofballs?’ I like playing with these opposites. P and I cultivate that,” lead singer Macklovitch told Spin in 2018. It’s a persona that has endeared Chromeo to its audience and raised eyebrows in the press. That particular Spin article was called “Can Chromeo Stop Goofing Long Enough to Earn Critical Respect?” As the duo was featured on NPR’s lauded Tiny Desk Concerts series months later to play tracks from its 2018 album Head Over Heels (Big Beat Records), it looks like the answer is yes. —Lex Nelson With Neil Frances. 8 p.m., $26-$119. We’ve all heard of bluegrass, but what about browngrass? According to Bill Pucci, the lead singer and multi-instrumentalist of self-proclaimed browngrass quartet Sour Bridges, “It’s like bluegrass, just a little dirtier.” Sour Bridges isn’t the only band to use the term—California musician Tommy Dahill even chose it as the name of one of his albums—but the Austin, Texas-based group has certainly popularized it, plying listeners across the county with a mix of folksy fiddle and rock-n’-roll electric guitar since 2010. It’s a blend that will fit right in at Pengilly’s in Boise, where local folk groups like Hillfolk Noir have been known to use the same stage as burlesque acts and controversial panels. Sour Bridges will come to the City of Trees on Wednesday, June 5, toting its brand-new album, Neon Headed Fool (self-released, 2019), which just dropped May 24. —Lex Nelson 9 p.m., FREE. RAMAPONG SERVES UP RAMEN, PING-PONG ON BOISE’S CAPITOL BOULEVARD This early in the game, there are no frills at RamaPong, the underground restaurant from Boise Fry Co. that combines ramen and PingPong beside Spacebar Arcade. The menu is short and to the point. Ramen takes pride of place as the only entree, with options for house or sweet potato broth, and three different tares, or flavors, to choose from, including shio (a salt base), shoyu (a soy base) and miso. The basic bowl with sweet potato broth costs $8.75, with add-ons like onsen egg, soft-boiled egg, braised pork “cutz,” buffalo meatballs and togarashi sweet potato upping the price anywhere from 75 cents to $3. Sides include katsu chicken ($8.14) and fried tofu ($4.50), and the space has a much-coveted full bar. When BW stopped by, the steaming bowls of ramen were deeply savory, with noodles swimming in a thick, salty sweet potato broth. Strips of kombu studded the miso bowl with a plank of togarashi sweet potato, and carrots cut in the shape of flowers adorned the shio bowl with braised pork. The pork was a bit on the fatty side, leaving the shio broth dotted with oil spots, but the noodles (from ramen giant Sun Noodle) were satisfyingly chewy and served in generous portions. The katsu chicken, paired with housemade teriyaki, was a standout, with light, crisp breading and very little grease. RamaPong’s ramen may not be life-changing, but for someone a few beers in, a bowl of its noodles will be just the thing to ward off a hangover. Considering it stays open late—until midnight on weekdays and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights—and offers $8-per-half-hour Ping-Pong at peak hours, that may indeed become its niche. In the meantime, the restaurant has big plans for its first year, including the pop-up-style addition of themed ramen bowls like spicy Korean or Vietnamese, a “ramen monster” mural near the bar and even, perhaps, locally made noodles. —Lex Nelson
