Let me be the ďŹ rst to congratulate you on being 1. savvy enough to pick up the very ďŹ rst edition of Bar Bar, and 2. smart enough to realize that if any media in town knows how to have a good time (something this little number is deeply committed to ferreting out), it’s Boise Weekly. Whether you want ’em stiff and cheap, thick and dark, or fullbodied with nice legs, BW is here to point you to the promised land, a place where everyone knows your name—at least for the night. And since this is the ďŹ rst of these little babies outta the gate, let’s get the ground rules straight. First, don’t drink and drive. Designate a driver, hail a cab, hire a limo, take a long walk home—hell, call your mom if you have to, but do not ever assume you’re OK to drive. Second, Boise Weekly does not, never has and won’t ever condone underage drinking. Be 21. Have a valid ID. Third, know when to say when. No one likes a puker, a ďŹ ghter, a crier or a passer-outer. And ďŹ nally ‌ remember to tip your bartender and/or cocktail waitress. As you thumb through Bar Bar, you’ll notice a couple of things about the bars and restaurants included herein. First and foremost, we covered all the locally owned and independent watering holes in town that are strictly bars. Then we dug out a few locally owned and independent restaurants where we’d feel entirely comfortable setting aside the food menu and drinking our way through a visit. We also included a few places that seem unlikely stops for a drink but were doing something drink-related that warranted a mention. Last, we threw in a listing for every bar or restaurant with an ad in this here mag. And we have a good reason for that. All advertising businesses get to participate in the Bar Bar ScaBARger Hunt should they choose to, and so that you know what you’re getting into before the crawl, we included a listing to help you get there and be prepared. Now, of course, you want to know what the ScaBARger Hunt is all about, don’t you? It’s your way to win more than $250 in free drinks all over the valley. Turn to page 20 to play. Last but not least, head to boiseweekly.com, where space is unlimited and we’ve listed all the bars we could possibly think of. Cheers. Rachael Daigle

10TH STREET STATION 104 N. 10th St., 208-344-2677
This subterranean space has plush pleather rolling chairs, sports memorabilia on the walls and enough smoke in the air to set off the fire alarms. It’s a favorite with hipsters but attracts a steady stream of college students and the blue-collar crowd, too. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 5-7 p.m. $2.75 wells, $1.50 domestic drafts.
1108 LOUNGE 1108 Front St., 208-331-4110
Don’t let the scruffy exterior scare you. 1108 has been gutted and remodeled, the little oasis patio is good for beer pong and summer disco nights, and the crowd is mighty straight-friendly. ANGELL’S 999 W. Main St., 208-342-4900
Angell’s is known for its steaks and seafood. In warmer weather, the patio, tucked into a sloping grassy hill, is a lush respite from the concrete jungle. BALCONY CLUB 150 N. Eighth St., Ste. 226, 208-336-1313
This bumping club with a fantastic view is the place to get your rump shaking. It may be the fiercest gay bar in town, but the straight crowd can’t stay away. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-7 p.m. $2.50 domestics, $3 bottled imports, $3.50 mixed drinks, $1 off wine.
BAR GERNIKA 202 S. Capitol Blvd., 208-344-2175
Croquettas and house red are all the rage at Gernika. It’s a dark little corner joint that’s nothing fancy, but it’s a favorite for Basque food, Spanish wine and a selection of micro taps that’ll keep a beer lover happy.
BASQUE CENTER 601 Grove St., 208-342-9983
Little known fact: The Basque Center is open to the public. It’s the unofficial watering hole for Boise’s large Basque population, but it also has a reputation for stiff drinks and outrageously fun crowds anytime the block is throwing a party.
BERRYHILL & CO. 121 N. Ninth St., 208-387-3553
At chef/owner John Berryhill’s place, you’ll want to grab a martini or sip a single-malt Scotch as you wait for your table or get ready for a night on the town. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Sat. 4-6 p.m.; Thu.-Sat. 10 p.m.-close 2-for-1 drinks.
DOWNTOWN
BITTERCREEK ALE HOUSE 246 N. Eighth St., 208-345-1813

HAPPY HOUR: Sun.Thu. 3-6 p.m. half off appetizers, $2.75 microbrews. Sun.-Thu. after 9 p.m. $2.50 wells, $2.75 microbrews, 50 cent wings.
THE BOUQUET 1010 W. Main St., 208-345-6605
This century-old landmark has been brought back to its former glory. One of the best places to mix your whiskey as well as to catch live music. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5-9 p.m. $2 well drinks.
CACTUS BAR 517 W. Main St., 208-342-9732
Watering hole for the serious drinker by day, 20-somethings by night. Dance on the bar or lounge on the alley patio any time. Cactus is a shot and a beer kind of bar. HAPPY HOUR: All day, every day $2 well drinks and $2 domestic drafts.
CAFE OLE 404 S. Eighth St., 208-344-3222
In the basement of BoDo, the maze-like interior offers privacy and a social atmosphere. Grab chips and salsa and a marg in the cantina and call it a night. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. 2-for-1 all drinks, $3 all you can eat taco bar.
CHANDLERS IN HOTEL 43 981 W. Grove St., 208-383-4300
The lights are low, the drinks chichi and the music live. Bask in the bar’s blue light with a Scotch or a martini and act like you’re a high roller.
CHINA BLUE 100 S. Sixth St., 208-338-6604
With a bar in the women’s bathroom, one made of ice, two hidden away in the VIP lounges, and one for the masses, China Blue is committed to a party. For maximum fun, try all five. HAPPY HOUR: Fri. and Sat. 9-11 p.m. $2 beers, $3 you-call-it.
COTTONWOOD GRILLE 913 W. River St., 208-333-9800
If you love having drinks in ski lodges, Cottonwood is your in-city destination. Inside and out, it looks like it was airlifted out of Aspen and dropped on to the Greenbelt. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. discounts on select wines by the glass and draft beers, special appetizer and martini menu.
DIRTY LIL RODDY’S 100 S. Sixth St., 208-338-6604
At Roddy’s you can ride the bull when things get dull (or when they get interesting). HAPPY HOUR: Fri. and Sat. 9-11 p.m. $3 Jack Daniels, $3 vibrator drinks, $10 buckets of Bud and Bud Light. www.boiseweekly.com | | 76G 76G

THE E-CLUB
GRAINEY’S BASEMENT
415 S. Ninth St., 208-342-5446
109 S. Sixth St., 208-345-2505
Boise’s grande dame of gay-friendly clubs has been welcoming people for decades. It looks like a little hole in the wall, but inside, the full bar fuels some of Boise’s best movers across the large dance floor night after night. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-7 p.m. 50 cents off all drinks.
Varied live music and a fun-loving clientele in this underground space. One flash of ID provides access to both Grainey’s bars so boredom will never rear its ugly head. HAPPY HOUR: Sun. all night, 50 cent Rainiers.
FALCON TAVERN
GRAPE ESCAPE 800 W. Idaho St., Ste. 100, 208-368-0200
If you’re not looking for this little pub on Idaho Street, you might miss it. Too bad for you because you’ll miss out on a superb rotating beer selection; Falcon strives to keep it seasonal and keep it local. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. 2-for-1 16 oz. pints and house reds and whites.
For years, the Grape has held down the most sought-after restaurant real estate in downtown, and on a busy summer night, it’s easy to see why. If fine wine (or a martini) and a decadent cheese plate is your idea of a relaxing time, the Grape is your escape. HAPPY HOUR: Tue. 5 p.m. wine flights, price varies.
THE FLICKS
GRIZZLY ROSE
646 Fulton St., 208-342-4222
1124 W. Front St., 208-342-3375
Praise be for the Flicks, where limited-release films are paired with beer and wine. Not feeling like a film? That’s OK. Flicks makes the bar guide because you don’t even need a movie ticket to share a drink with friends.
A little naughty, a little nice, a little country and a little hip-hop. The Grizz is still fairly new, but it has intimate concerts featuring big names. A VIP room, big old dance floor and a mechanical bull ensure that whether you’re stopping by or staying all night, fun will had by you and all your friends. HAPPY HOUR: Fri.-Sat. 9 p.m-2 a.m. drink specials and free bull rides.
780 W. Idaho St., 208-947-3111
THE FRONT DOOR NORTHWEST PIZZA AND TAP HOUSE 105 S. Sixth St., 208-287-9201
Two words sum up drinking at Front Door: “domestic free.” The pub consistently bottoms out Boise’s Coldest Beer contest for good reason: good beer don’t need no cold. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-6 p.m. $1 off drafts.
GAMEKEEPER LOUNGE 1109 W. Main St., 208-343-4611
Slip into the shadowy lounge and sink into one of the lavish lounge chairs. Order a drink, close your eyes and listen to some live jazz. Sigh. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 3-6 p.m. $1 off domestic beer, drafts, well drinks, wines by the glass, $2 off martinis and half-price appetizers.
GUSTO’S 509 W. Main St., 208-343-5159
Dark walls, a tin ceiling and low lights lend it a lounge feel; the invasion of college coeds on the weekends and the occasional metal, punk or rock show invigorates the joint. You may even see a sk8r on the half-pipe—inside.
HAPPY FISH SUSHI & MARTINI BAR 855 Broad St., 208-343-4810
The martini menu at Happy Fish keeps its patrons hooked with frou-frou choices like the Jackie O or the G-Spot, or with classics like the Dutch or James Bond. Or ditch the hard stuff for sake, beer or wine. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Thu. 3-6 p.m. $5 select martinis and $5 8 oz. hot sake.

HUMPIN’ HANNAH’S 621 W. Main St., 208-345-7557
For three decades, Hannah’s has been the place to go to get your dance on. On any given night, the place is packed thanks to the Rocci Johnson Band, and you’ll have to thread through a throng of party people to order a drink. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 3-8 p.m. $2 domestics, $2.50 well drinks.
MACK & CHARLIES 507 W. Main St., 208-343-5159
Dark and sleek interiors will help you decompress any weeknight while you knock around some billiards. But stop in on a weekend and you’ll be able to peruse what seems like the city’s entire population of beautiful 20-somethings. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5-8 p.m. specials vary daily.
MAI THAI 750 W. Idaho St., 208-344-8424
Proprietor Giuseppe Veneziano puts the social in “sociale” and is never shy about popping open a bottle and sitting down with customers. HAPPY HOUR: Every day $4 house wine.
Mai Thai has been serving up style along with Thai cuisine and colorful cocktails for years. Many of its drinks were concocted to snag awards during the annual Martini Mix-Off. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Thu. 5-6:30 p.m., 9-10 p.m. and Fri. 5-6:30 p.m. $2 daily bottled beer selection, $5 2-for-1 well drinks, $5 mai thai cocktail, $5 mojito, appetizer specials $.99-$3.95.
LEKU ONA
MAIN STREET BISTRO
111 S. Sixth St., 208-345-6665
609 Main St., 208-345-4515
Leku’s three-sided bar invites conversation and is a decent place to smoke a stogie; perhaps that’s why it’s one of the favorites with the political set. It has a positively sophisticated, old-country feel to it. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-5:30 p.m. half off well drinks, Bud, Stella and house wines.
MSB has long been the place to go looking good and looking for a good time with many a newly 21-year-old discovering the need for a good hangover cure. In the summer, the prime-location patio is barely standing room only. HAPPY HOUR: Mon., Tue., Thu. $2 domestics, $5 pitchers; Wed. $1 domestic drafts, $2 micro drafts, $3 sex on the beach, $4 large Corona or Red Stripe; Fri.-Sat. 8-10 p.m. $2 you call it, $4 Red Bull drinks.
LA CANTINA SOCIALE 707 W. Bannock St., 208-377-0224
LIQUID 405 S. Eighth St., 208-287-5379
Liquid has an ever-changing music and entertainment schedule of punk, rock, acoustic, comedy and more. Cheap drinks and an owner who knows a thing or two about bartending. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.Sun. 2-7 p.m. $1 PBRs, $2 well drinks, $1 off everything else; service and military receive happyhour pricing 24/7.
LOCK, STOCK & BARREL 1100 W. Jefferson St., 208-336-4266

MULLIGAN’S PUB AND EATERY 1009 W. Main St., 208-336-6998

DOWNTOWN
PENGILLY’S SALOON 513 W. Main St., 208-345-6344
OPA 213 N. Eighth St., 208-342-6555
Opa! Every time someone walks in or out of the skinny bar, the staff yells “Opa!” Dressed in red from head to toe, Opa is a sleek little place where the pretty people and the hipsters coexist. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Sat. 4-7 p.m. $2 wells, $2 drafts; Mondays, international drinks $2 off.
PAIR
Cosmo rated Pengilly’s the best bar in the U.S. of A in which to steal a kiss. Esquire called it one of the greatest bars in the country. A bar could get a big head from all that attention, but Pengilly’s has been around long enough to know how to take a compliment without getting too big for its britches. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 3-7 p.m., all night Tue. 2-for-1 well drinks and drafts.
PROTO’S PIZZA
601 W. Main St., 208-343-7034
345 S. Eighth St., 208-331-1400
Low couches and dark, moody walls make a dramatic backdrop for consuming cocktails. With floorto-ceiling windows and prime corner patio space at Sixth and Main, Pair is a place to watch and be watched. And if that gawking works up an appetite, check out the menu. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. $5 martinis.
Try the signature Prototini, a brilliant concoction of Absolut Vanilla Vodka sprinkled with coffee beans, shaken and topped with Kahlua. In the summer, the bar goes indoor/outdoor thanks to some garage doors. Belly up outside for a change. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. $1 off all drinks and an assortment of $5 small pies.
PIAZZA DI VINO
RED FEATHER LOUNGE
212 N. Ninth St., 208-336-9577
246 N. Eighth St., 208-429-6340
This little wine bar certainly creates an unpretentious scene of its own. With an art gallery upstairs, a modest menu and off-the-hook DJ parties, it’s easy to forget that it’s really all about wine. But all about the wine it is.
Red Feather whips up righteous cocktails. It’s a prime place to nibble on local apps and get buzzed on local booze. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. appetizer specials, no drink specials.
PIPER PUB & GRILL
603 Main St., 208-343-7034
150 N. Eighth St., Ste. 200, 208-343-2444
During the warmer months, Piper Pub’s balcony is so full of happy-go-lucky folks, it looks like a Mardi Gras celebration. And during the wintry days, the Scotch club sips the night away. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 3-6 p.m. 2-for-1 drinks and appetizers (some restrictions apply).
RED ROOM Red Room is a hole in the wall. Literally. It’s no more than 10 feet wide. Get a can of man (PBR flavored, of course), and play Supermario Brothers. Take too many friends and you’ll look like you’re pouring out of a clown car at the end of the night. HAPPY HOUR: Tue. double well drinks for price of a single; Wed. $2 PBR tallboys all night; Sun. $2.50 well drinks and $1 Rainier cans.
DOWNTOWN
REEF 105 S. Sixth St., 208-287-9200
This downtown destination is part tropical retreat with a great patio and part restaurant with live music. Island food is matched with a large selection of beer or wine. Or order a tiki-themed cocktail served in a large ceramic bowl and set afire. HAPPY HOUR: Sun.-Thu. 3-6 p.m. $3 wells and domestic pints, shot specials, $4.50 mojitos, key lime martinis and margaritas, half-price appetizers.
TABLEROCK BREWPUB AND GRILL 705 Fulton St., 208-342-0944
Downtown’s only microbrewery pours a selection of handcrafted drafts in hefty 20 oz. British imperial pint glasses. So whether you’re giving the comehither lash bat to the Laughing Dog Pale Ale, the Hopzilla or the Dawson Taylor Stimulator Stout, you’ll probably still leave with your arm thrown around a bubbly growler or two. HAPPY HOUR: Tue. and Thu. 4:30-6:30 p.m. $2.75 20 oz. beer, $2.25 14 oz. beer, $2.25 house wine.
TERRAPIN STATION 1519 W. Main St., 208-342-1776
Terrapin used to be ground zero for the Dead Heads. Although the music has strayed from the hippie lineup, the beer selection is still outstanding, the tapestries psychedelic and though the crowd at times is more “trustafarian” than rastafarian, good vibes usually rule the roost. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-7 p.m. $1.75 wells, $1.50 PBR, $2.50 micros, $5 PBR pitchers, $9 micro pitchers.
TOM GRAINEY’S 109 S. Sixth St., 208-345-2505
This two-for-one bar has long been the anchor of the Sixth and Main scene with live music all the time. Grainey’s is comfortable and homey with an old Wild West feel to it. Or get your urban on downstairs in the Basement. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Sat. 3-9 p.m. $1 off everything.
YEN CHING 305 N. Ninth St., 208-384-0384
Have a martini with your potstickers and chow mein if you please. Yen Ching has an air of class probably due to the recently added full bar, which, thanks for asking, is why it’s a popular spot for downtowners to lunch and makes an appearance in BW’s bar guide. No Happy Hour (yet).
THE ZONE AT THE GROVE HOTEL 245 S. Capitol Blvd., 208-472-3333
If you prefer to devour a plate of nachos while you watch a couple of dudes beat the snot outta one another on ice, The Zone is a good place to catch a hockey game. But that’s about the only time to check out this second-floor haunt. Seasonal closures and erratic hours have chased all the fun out of this bar in recent years.

DONNIE MAC’S TRAILER PARK CUISINE 1515 W. Grove St., 208-384-9008
Six different beers are always on tap in the trailer park, which is definitely more family friendly hangout than destination bar. But for a change of pace, check it out. Kitsch is so cool here, you can get a Brass Monkey. Classy. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 2-7 p.m. $1 PBR.
GIL’S K-9 BAR 2506 Main St., 208-345-4420
This hidden gem, perched near the industrial, Connector end of Main Street, is a windowless dive you’ve probably motored by a million times. But don’t be scared of the unknown. Pub grub and a healthy selection of libations lurk inside.
JOE’S CRAB SHACK 2288 N. Garden St., 208-336-9370
Joe’s has a riverside patio that’s a great place to spend a summer evening, and outside is where you’ll want to be. Inside is mayhem with eight highdefinition televisions, a full menu, a full bar and entertaining servers. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 3-7 p.m., $1.25 domestic beers, $2 well drinks, $3 frozen margaritas and select martinis.
LUCKY DOG 2223 W. Fairview Ave., 208-333-0074

A destination for folks who put stock not just in what they drink, but where. The Modern is one Boise’s tres chic lounges. With 45-rpm record players in each bathroom and unique bar snacks, it’s definitely not your average juke joint. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 5-7 p.m. $3 beer specials, $3.50 wells, $5 wines by the glass.
SPEARMINT RHINO GENTLEMEN’S CLUB 1500 W. Grove St., 208-429-8229
One of a chain of upscale, international gentlemen’s clubs, Spearmint Rhino Boise is rife with babes in bikinis and fights, but only on the big screen TVs. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 3-7 p.m. Sat.Sun. 5-7 p.m. $2 well drinks, wine and drafts, $4 you call it.
SYMPOSION 2801 Fletcher St., 208-342-9420
This is a bar for dogs, but humans will be tolerated. Without a canine companion, you don’t belong at the Sympo. It ain’t the cleanest bar around, but the barkeep is entertaining and the drinks are a decent bang for your buck.
THE TORCH 1826 W. Main St., 208-344-0218

CHARLIE BROWN’S 5783 Overland Road, 208-375-6541
Charlie Brown’s used to be a place for young folks in bellbottoms and leisure suits. Unlike its early patrons, not much has changed about Charlie Brown’s except the neighborhood. Now Charlie Brown’s is like the old guy who’s lived in the same place his whole life; he’s not going anywhere. All grit, no grace. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5-6:30 p.m. $2 drafts, $2.75 wells.
JUMPIN’ JANET’S 572 S. Vista Ave., 208-342-7620
The jumpin’ in Jumpin’ Janet’s has everything to do with the fun-loving clientele after happy hour. In a strip mall, a menu of sandwiches and delicious apps gives patrons a little something to soak up two-forone happy-hour cocktails. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-7 p.m. $3 2-for-1 wells.

The “LDG” sits smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood, and the selection of beers might be reminiscent of what patrons stock in their own refrigerators. In the cold weather, huddle around the fireplace, and when it’s hot, practice for the LDGsponsored horseshoe tournaments in the bar’s huge fenced back yard. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4:30-6 p.m. $1 Rolling Rock 16 oz. pounders, $1.50 draft beer, $4 pitchers.
MCCLEARY’S PUB 604 N. Orchard Ave., 208-342-3007
The regulars will leave you alone or welcome you into the fold while you throw back some cold suds or stiff spirits. Get a little liquid courage in you, strike up a game of pool, shuffleboard, darts or pinball all by your lonesome or with a couple of your newest drinking buddies. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 9-10 a.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. 50 cents off drafts and $1 off wells.
NAVAJO ROOM 4900 Emerald St., 208-343-5817
Ah, the soothing comfort of a Western theme. Larger-than-life photos of the Duke and Clint Eastwood share wall space with Native American murals, and a corner stage serves as a karaoke corner. They’ve served up suds and drinks for more than 40 years in this joint where regulars meet at the bar, in front of a wood-burning brick fireplace or stake a claim in a cushioned corner booth. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 5-7 p.m. $2 cans, $2.25 wells.

A drinking game for the traveling lush. And now the fun begins. What you’ll ďŹ nd here is a friendly little competition we like to call your way to get free drinks. Yes, free. Here’s how it works: Thumb through Bar Bar and pay close attention to the ads. With few exceptions, you’ll see a three-quarter-inch circle somewhere on every ad. Some circles are dashed lines, others are laid over the ad’s design. What belongs in those circles is a sticker. The ďŹ rst person to collect a sticker on every participating bar wins the big prize. To get a sticker, you must visit each bar and order a drink. The big prize? Gift certiďŹ cates to every participating bar, totaling more than $250 in free stuff. So get drinking and the ďŹ rst person to bring their completed, fully stamped copy of Bar Bar in to BW (523 Broad St.) will walk out of our ofďŹ ce with a ďŹ stful of free drink coupons to dispose of as they see ďŹ t. BENCH
THE PLANK 650 S. Vista Ave., 208-336-1790
This Bench haunt may be one of Boise’s most interesting little watering holes. It’s not just Boise’s only pirate bar, but it may be the only pirate-specific bar in the world that doesn’t serve rum. Beer and wine only, but bar grub, darts and live music make for plenty of merriment even without Captain Morgan. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-7 p.m. and Sat.-Sun. 1-7 p.m. 50 cents off microbrews, 75 cents off domestics, rotating daily specials.
QUINN’S RESTAURANT & LOUNGE 1005 S. Vista Ave., 208-345-0135
When smoking was banned in restaurants, Quinn’s installed a wall between the bar and dining area. Now, the Bench joint has a family-friendly vibe on one side, and smokers can still indulge with impunity. Quinn’s is a must-stop on any St. Patrick’s Day bar tour. Hell, it’s a must stop every day. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5-7 p.m. 50 cents off.
STUBS SPORTS PUB 3662 S. Findley Ave., 208-336-7882
Every seat in the house, including recliners, allows easy viewing of one of the many giant TVs. Watch them while digging into apps, salad or a pizza or sandwich. And if you’re as tough as a fullback, try a pickled egg. They score a touchdown every time. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-7 p.m. $2.75 20 oz. domestics, $4.50 20 oz. microbrews.
THE TORCH II 610 Vista Ave., 208-336-4747
Stepsister to the original bikini bar on Main Street, The Torch II is almost a more popular stop these days. Skin to win, baby. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Sat. 2-7 p.m., Mon. 10-midnight, Sun. 4-7 p.m. $3 wells and domestics.
VISTA BAR 813 Vista Ave., 208-342-9911

Grab your friends, drop some money in the jukebox and spend an evening tossing back a brew or two. Or three. Or four. Call a cab. HAPPY HOUR: Sun. all day 16 oz. PBR and shot of Jack Daniels $3.50, and 8 p.m.-close $2 wells and domestics; Mon. 8 p.m.-close $1 off pitchers; Tue. 8 p.m.-close $1.50 off bombs; Wed. 8-close flip against the bartender to see who buys on wells and domestics; Thu. 8 p.m.-close ladies 2-for-1.

THE BEER HOUSE
FLYING PIE
9751 Cory Lane, 208-322-9958
6508 Fairview Ave., 208-345-0000
It’s essentially an old house that serves beer. In the middle of a residential neighborhood, it has deals on mini-pitchers and spicket-heavy pours of chilled boxed wine. It’s like a perennial barbeque at your drunk uncle’s double-wide. Don’t expect to be pampered. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 3-6 p.m. $2 pints, $5.50 large pitchers.
This pizza joint makes BW’s bar guide for one reason only: Triple Pi Ale. Brewed exclusively for Flying Pie by Sockeye Brewery, any restaurant that has its very own beer is worthy. Drink specials include buy five bottles and receive the sixth free. They stand by their beverages with a guarantee—if you don’t like your drink, trade it for one you do.

Sin Night, $2 Long Island ice teas, $3 Jaeger bombs, $1 drafts.
With a new owner, the place is evolving faster than you can say, “No honey, I’m still at the office.” Its location doesn’t exactly welcome a kitten-heel and apple martini crowd ... yet. Expect a bar staff rolling with the punches, giant mugs of beer, a place to get your meal and your smoke on, and a place to play a little beer pong. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. 25 oz. drafts for 16 oz. price; every day 11 a.m.-4 p.m. free pool, rotating food and drink specials.
CAFE OLE 210 N. Milwaukee St., 208-322-0222
The mall zone sibling of the downtown Boise cantina, this Mexican eatery offers needed respite from the head-spinning chaos of the Boise Towne Square (with a little help from Patron, of course). HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. and 9-11 p.m. 2-for-1 all drinks, $3 all you can eat taco bar.
THE CRESCENT BAR 5500 W. Franklin Road, 208-322-9856
To eat and drink at the Crescent, one must follow a small but important set of rules: enjoy cold beer and a varied selection of pub food; at least like sports; enjoy good service and kick-ass happy hour prices; and above all, don’t be a lawyer. Don’t believe us? Just try taking your solicitor or barrister in. We dare you. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4:30-6:30 p.m. $1 off drafts and wells, $1.50 off calls and cocktails, $1 off appetizers.
THE POCKET 1487 N. Curtis Road, 208-375-2474
Venture inside this expansive pool hall for a cold brew or a stiff cocktail. Regulars boast that the best pocket billiard players to ever wield a stick in the Northwest choose to rack one up at The Pocket. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-7 p.m. $2 wells, $2 drafts, $6 domestic draft pitchers, $3 micro drafts and $9 micro pitcher.
Q’S BILLIARDS AND EATERY 6570 Fairview Ave., 208-322-9122
This good ol’ fashioned pool hall hasn’t changed much over the last 20 years. The BFD special— burger, fries and any domestic beer—is still $2.95, and TVs still flicker with whatever sport happens to be in season. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-7 p.m. $1.50 drafts and well drinks.
SAM’S PLACE 3395 N. Five Mile Road, 208-376-0074
This strip mall dive has all the smoke-stained, harddrinking, pool-playing appeal of a country song. Don’t expect to leave without instigating or break-
WEST ing up a good bar brawl. Or at least kickin’ some ass at shuffleboard. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 3-7 p.m., $2 domestic drafts, $3.25 premium drafts, $2.50 wells.
SOCKEYE GRILL & BREWERY 3019 N. Cole Road, 208-658-1533
Up on the Bench, a beer revolution is brewing. Best known for its selection of hop-kickin’ IPAs, Sockeye pours about a dozen homebrewed micros every day. The food is Northwest fare with a healthy bent to it, and live music happens every Tuesday and Friday. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5-6:30 p.m. and 8-10 p.m. $3 pints.
TAJ MAHAL 10548 W. Fairview Ave., 208-327-4500
Decidedly restaurant, yet decidedly noteworthy for its beer selection, with more than 80 foreign and domestic beers. We say the beer list that comes with your curry is a thing of beauty. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5-6 p.m. half off beers.
VILLAGE PUB 9936 Fairview Ave., 208-322-9153
Village Pub can be considered hidden, set back from the main drag in a clubhouse-like building. But walk inside and you will be immediately drawn to the central fire, the classic booth seating or a stool at the bar. It’s a long-standing institution that has a new feel to it. Pool table and lunch specials to boot. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Sat. 4-7 p.m. 25 cents off.
SOUTHWEST
BUDDIES PUB & DELI 8654 W. Overland Road, 208-658-0906
Without another bar in sight, Buddies is Southwest Boise’s answer to booze prayers. Nevermind that it’s in a strip mall. If you really need a fix, Buddies can deliver. Otherwise, it’s best suited for regulars and wayward wanderers. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 10 a.m.-7 p.m. $2.50 drafts.
HOOLIGANS PUB 10704 Overland Road, 208-376-9800

LEGENDS SPORTS PUB AND GRILL 7609 Overland Road, 208-377-1819
Wrap your hands around frosty mugs of pales, IPAs and regional beers. A full bar is available as well for sports-loving patrons who come in for the big games or before a flick to enjoy the food part of the business as much as the spirits. Though this classy Latin-fusion restaurant can be pricey if you opt for the candle-lit, clink-clink, wine-anddine ordeal, it offers a pretty solid two-for-one early and late-night happy hour for those more charmed by a river of strong booze than all of that lakeside romantic stuff. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-6 p.m. and Thu.Sat. 9:30-midnight, 2-for-1 all drinks.
EASTSIDE TAVERN 610 E. Boise Ave., 208-388-8700
Many would be put off by Eastside Tavern’s location. But never judge what happens in a bar by its not-sostellar location. All walks of life converge for a little late night drink slinging in the dark and shopping mall surroundings. This ain’t the kind of place you order a Cosmo; cherry bombs all the way. It’s a small wonder that not only can the building support the weight of the sign, but that the whole structure doesn’t collapse in a strong wind. Even so, the 44 Club has two things going for it: karaoke and no draft beer. The former means crooning fun, and the latter just means really, really, really cold bottled beer. This is one of Idaho’s mainstays, so if you’re in the mood for an old bar with some local color, belly up. HAPPY HOUR: “We’re cheap all day long.”
This utilitarian haunt inside the 20th Century Lanes bowling alley serves up ridiculously cheap pitchers to spare you from a night of bowling sobriety. The lounge alone is the reason many bowlers choose 20th Century over other lanes in town. HAPPY HOUR: Mon. 5-7 p.m. and Wed. 9-11 p.m. 2-for-1 drinks.
BREWS BROTHERS 6928 W. State St., 208-853-0526
Pastel and smoky, it’s the kind of place where everyone has their own mug up on the wall. Tucked away in a strip mall hideaway, Brews is clean and new-feeling with a ton of beers: 23 drafts. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. noon-2 p.m. and 4-8 p.m., all day Sun. 50 cents off draft with daily specials Mon. 7 p.m. to close; half off drafts Wed. 7 p.m. to close, $1 off bottles.
BURGER ’N BREW 4295 W. State St., 208-345-7700
The State Street location of this Boise mainstay is the last man standing in the Burger & Brew family. This is what a sports bar used to be: family restaurant, sports memorabilia, bar area for the game crowd. It’s a comfortable, neighborhood bar feel, and it manages to retain some of the friendliest bar staff in town. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. 50 cents off.
DUTCH GOOSE 3515 W. State St., 208-342-8887
A no-smoking policy offers a respite from many a bar’s smoky ozone layer. Foosball, darts, pool, horseshoe pits and televisions galore, and the food guarantees plenty of repeat business. Steamed clams, French dip, Reuben sandwiches, finger steaks and a selection of brilliant burgers. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. $1.50 domestics, $2.50 premium beers.
FIRESIDE INN 1610 N. 31st St., 208-342-9075
When compiling a dive-bar hop, Fireside is a mustvisit. Big white building. No windows. Dark and smoky inside. It’s the kind of place you could hide in all day and no one would look for you. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-6 p.m. 50 cents off liquor, $5 pitchers.
FLYING PIE 4320 State St., 208-384-0000
The draw might be the pizza, but Flying Pie on State Street is proud to offer a “7-Day Beer Keg Forecast,” updated regularly so patrons know what to expect from the taps. Triple Pi Ale, brewed especially for the Pie by Sockeye Brewing, is the big kahuna in the Pie’s beer pond.
THE LIFT 4091 W. State St., 208-342-3250
This sweet spot tempts traffic jammers with their ridiculous drink specials. Tuesday is Holy Oly night, with 50-cent Olympia cans from 4 p.m.-close, and every night you can throw back $2 domestics from 4-6 p.m. and 9-11 p.m. And if you need something to soak up all that cheap booze, gnaw on a plate of nachos or one of the vegetarian-friendly dishes. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. and 9-11 p.m. $2 domestic pints, $3 wells.
MCCLEARY’S PUB 9155 W. State St., 208-853-9910
The pub boasts a back yard bigger than your house. There are horseshoe pits, a basketball court and a gazebo. Inside, entertainment includes video games, dart boards and a pool table. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5:30-7 p.m. with 50 cents off domestic and microbrews.
MONTEGO BAY 3000 N. Lakeharbor Lane, 208-853-5070
A little bit of the tropics in a land-locked state. Montego Bay’s claim to fame is its patio, or layers of patios, stretching from the restaurant down to the lake. There are multiple bars inside and out, and customers swill the night away in Boise’s tiki version of Margaritaville. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 5-7 p.m. $2.50 well drinks, $2 drafts, $5 domestic pitchers.
TERRY’S STATE STREET SALOON 3301 Collister St., 208-331-8225
Terry’s may look like it’s about to fall down, but the loyal clientele and the ever-present party will keep the roof raised. This is a converging point for the college and blue-collar crowds and wayward North Enders. Better know what you want when you finally get your 10 seconds at the bar, though, because bartender Kjell don’t wait for nobody, missy. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-7 p.m. $2 domestics, $4 double wells.
TURNER’S SPORTS BAR 4022 W. State St., 208-342-9090
Turner’s is about as classy as its exterior would let you believe. Though this rickety box of a bar is crawling with weary regulars, don’t forget that you’re all there for the same thing: the cocktails. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 5-7 p.m. 25 cents off well drinks, 50 cents off pitchers.
GARDEN CITY
BOULEVARD BAR 4079 Chinden Blvd., Garden City, 208-342-9906
The Boulevard is a tough little joint. But once you’ve seen how much fun the regulars are having, you’ll want to become one. HAPPY HOUR: Mon.-Fri. 4-6 p.m. 25 cents off everything.
CLUB SAVVY’S 3933 Chinden Blvd., Garden City, 208-429-9339
One of the windowless Garden City dens, Club Savvy’s knows how to do the typical karaoke and pool table scene. The smoky dive is a surprisingly hip little joint with a younger crowd gathering for pool, dancing and a good time seven damn days a week. HAPPY HOUR: Every day 4-9 p.m. 50 cents off mixed drinks and drafts.
MR. LUCKY’S 4902 Chinden Blvd., Garden City, 208-327-0925

SHORTY’S SALOON 5467 Glenwood St., Garden City, 208-672-9090
With spurs, hitching posts, and a jukebox full of Willie, it’s a good old cowboy bar. Live music, lots of boot-scootin’. HAPPY HOUR: Wed. 9 p.m.-midnight $1 drafts; $4 trailer bombs daily.
STAGECOACH INN 3132 Chinden Blvd., Garden City, 208-342-4161
If there is such a thing as an institution in Boise, it’s the Stagecoach. The windowless, wood-lined bar and restaurant serves strong drinks and big steaks. The waitresses wear fringe-lined mini dresses and know the names of every regular.
VISUAL ARTS COLLECTIVE 3638 Osage St., Garden City, 208-424-8297
