city santa Catch up with the chief elf Generations of children have sat on Santa’s lap and whispered their secret Christmas wishes in his ear, believing with all their hearts that on Christmas morning, the jolly old elf will deliver the goods. To celebrate this magical tradition, Santa is heading to Downtown Boise this holiday season at DL Evans Bank on the corner of Ninth and Idaho streets. Children can visit him every Saturday from Nov. 26 through Dec. 17 from 11 a.m.4 p.m., and on First Thursday, Dec. 1 from 5-8 p.m. A visit to Santa is worth 1,000 words, but for a small donation you can have a photo taken of your child and Santa together. And in the true spirit of the holidays, all donations will benefit the American Cancer Society to help in cancer research, education and other services. So bundle up the kids, let them whisper in Santa’s ear, get a photo snapped to save the memory, help the American Cancer Society and do some downtown shopping—all in one trip. Don’t miss out on this Christmas tradition—Saint Nick only stays around for so long. —Patti Murphy

Old Chicago hosts Miracle on Idaho Street For the ninth year, Old Chicago (730 W. Idaho St., oldchicago.com/downtown-boise) will host Miracle on Idaho Street, when more than 1,000 displaced guests from local shelters are treated to a holiday meal, a visit with Santa, toys, treats and the warmth of community on Christmas Day. When guests arrive, they are seated at tables set with fine linen, silverware and china. Food is served by volunteers from the community, including members of the Boise police and fire departments. “We start signing up volunteers in November, and it fills up almost immediately,” said Ken Helmig, manager of the Downtown Boise Old Chicago. After their meal, guests go upstairs to the Rose Room where Santa and his elves greet the kids while toys, school supplies, toiletries and more are picked up by the families. Helmig noted that all the gifts are new, purchased with money raised during the year through Old Chicago fundraisers. “In the summer we have a golf tournament, and in October we do Mustache for Miracles where guys grow mustaches and compete for prizes. This year we raised about $3,000,” he said. In addition, the restaurant supplies phones in case guests would like to make a call home. “It’s a big event, and it keeps getting bigger each year,” Helmig said. “We are proud to be a part of it.” —Patti Murphy

parking Free parking Downtown, Saturday, Dec. 10 If you think a Monopoly board is the only place you’ll ever find free parking, here’s some good news: Visit downtown on Saturday, Dec. 10, and park all day in the following lots and structures for free. Just think, no worrying about meters or searching for a space. Park and enjoy more than 300 Downtown Boise shops, restaurants and entertainment options. It’s like passing Go and getting $200. Like Christmas, free downtown parking day comes only once a year, so don’t miss out. Think of it as an early present from your friends at Capital City Development Corporation, Republic Parking, Diamond Parking and The Car Park. Of course, if you’d like to get a jump on your holiday shopping, the City of Boise will help you get in the spirit by offering free on-street parking on Friday, Nov. 25. On the traditional start to the shopping rush, metered parking will not be enforced all day. Regular rates will apply in the public parking garages and private lots. —Patti Murphy
