When I first launched BOLD Traveller a few years ago, I had no experience in the publishing or media industry. I had just left my cushy job at a top financial institution to pursue a venture I had only murkily envisioned. All I knew was that I had to follow my entrepreneurial heart and channel my passion for travel into realizing something that served Canada’s most curious and intrepid. Today, BOLD Traveller is Canada’s leading luxury travel publication. Though we had to overcome many challenges along the way, they pale in comparison to what the world is collectively dealing with now. Today is a different world: vaccines and vaccine passports are the norm and we are learning how to navigate new travel protocols and constantly changing travel restrictions. It might take time, but I am confident we will continue to adjust and find the light at the end of the tunnel—just as we always have. Throughout the pandemic, I’ve had the immense privilege of working remotely and the good fortune of staying healthy. Since 2020, I’ve been hunkered down in my small (very small) condo in downtown Toronto, flipping through old travel magazines, watching reruns of the Golden Girls or Schitt’s Creek as a way to maintain some sort of normalcy. From time to time, I would make a short trip to the Toronto Islands to read a book or stop by the old office, missing my wonderful colleagues and craving the powerful creativity that is born out of a face-to-face interaction. The kitchen chitchats and that human bond you cannot get from a Zoom call—no matter how many a day you sit through. I still enjoy working from the 12th floor of my office, empty as it may be. But what I love the most, regardless of the season, is the light filtering through the glass and the setting sun that reminds me that tomorrow is another day and maybe, just maybe, it will be better than the last.

We’ve all been deeply affected and humbled by the global pandemic in some fashion, some more acutely than others: the travel, tourism and hospitality industries have been decimated. Yet, nothing compares to the heartbreaking loss of life and long-term fallout wrought by COVID-19. The magnitude of lost jobs, shuttered restaurants and small-business closures has been sobering. We’ve been forced to face a specific kind of collective grief in ways new to many of us. Yet, two years in, I still can’t help but feel optimistic and hopeful about the future, heartened by the efficient rollout and widespread embrace of vaccination. With new travel protocols in place to keep us safe, I am confident and eager to start exploring the world anew. As I think about travelling again, I yearn for deeper, enriching experiences. In service of that desire, this issue showcases our first #BoldList—the places, the people and the things we’re craving post-pandemic. When the time is right, travel will bounce back with a vengeance - and it will be better than ever. Travel can be radically inclusive and celebrate all of us. Travel can strengthen the economic resilience of local communities. Travel can empower all of us to be part of the solution. Travel can transform lives, proving that we have more in common than what we think divides us. At its best, travel gets us out of our comfort zone, gives us an opportunity to learn about different cultures, savour different foods, ride the buses, experience traditions like locals do and ultimately helps us grow as people. And this is my wish and hope as the world opens up: I want to travel more slowly, more purposefully, and more intentionally. I wish to leave a gentler footprint. I hope we emerge from this time with a renewed sense of our global interconnectedness, a recognition of our shared humanity, a dash of humbleness and an appreciation for the people that make an impact in our daily lives.

The issue that you are holding in your hand represents a new beginning for our publication. We’ll be making some exciting changes over the next few months. Please reach out if there is anything you would like to see from us as we evolve. Rest assured that we will remain bold at heart and as committed as ever to sparking the curiosity that inspires you to hit the road. Most importantly, I want to dedicate this issue to all of you that work in this wonderful industry: the travel agents that organise our itineraries, the butlers that open our doors, the pilots that take us from one destination to another, to the front line workers taking care of our loved ones, to the lovely flight attendants who are there to save our lives in case of an emergency. The people that feed us and clean our rooms and the grocery store clerks who help us get food on our table. And to you, dear reader, who continue to serve as my inspiration. My Best Hotel Experience: Unquestionably, the Belmond Cap Juluca in serene Anguilla... Ivory sands, dreamy villas, and a tantalizing tour de force in Peruvian cuisine that has me daydreaming of ceviche to this day. My Most Memorable Hotel Stay: Not quite a hotel, but definitely spending three nights in a hammock in the heart of Managua, Nicaragua; sharing my sleeping space with a few particularly spirited chickens. In 2022, I look forward to travelling to: Iceland, because over a year of mask-wearing has given me the training I need to transition to a balaclava with minimal discomfort. Also, the Northern Lights!

When I think of The Bahamas: The Bahamas was the first island I visited in the Caribbean and the colour and warmth of the sea was a revelation. You could not get me out of the water! Still can’t. In 2022, I look forward to travelling to: Tbilisi, Georgia for its exciting art scene, and Akko, Israel, a city that is normally a model of co-existence and where you find the fantastic seafood restaurant Uri Buri.

My most memorable wellness treatment experience: at a spa in the south of France with an all-Russian staff who spoke neither French nor English. We communicated by charades. I don’t remember a time when I felt so confused yet so relaxed. In retrospect, the language barrier removed all self-consciousness which enhanced each treatment. I would travel to: the Brittany region of France for Thalassotherapy. They take hydrotherapy to the next level. In 2022, I look forward to traveling to: the Sundance Film Festival in Utah to see premiere films, ski in the famous white powder of the Wasatch Mountains, and enjoy the apres-ski saunas and hot tubs.

Two icons 150 years apart are coming together with a message of hope and optimism—in a bottle of bubbly By Vawn Himmelsbach

Veuve Clicquot has partnered with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama to celebrate its new vintage, La Grande Dame 2012. The collaboration is a tribute to Madame Clicquot, “La Grande Dame” of champagne, featuring Kusama’s signature polka dots suggestive of champagne bubbles. Kusama designed both a label and presentation box for the prestige cuvée. But the piéce de resistance is a sculptural flower, called “My Heart That Blooms in The Darkness of The Night,” that winds itself around a limited edition magnum—hand-painted by the celebrated artist herself. The sculpture consists of five blooms made of resin and copper, painted in vibrant hues and coated with lacquer—along with more than 1,000 precisely placed polka dots. According to Veuve Clicquot, the sculpture symbolizes love, vibrant energy and a celebration of life. Each of the only 100 editions is numbered and available upon request. More widely available is the 75cl bottle, which also features Kusama’s flower motif on the presentation box, as well as her signature polka dots on the label. This special bottle will soon be available for purchase in Canada. This isn’t the first time Veuve Clicquot has partnered with the iconic Japanese painter, sculptor, author, performance artist and filmmaker. In 2006, Kusama brought to life an original portrait of Madame Clicquot with a vibrant polka-dot pattern as part of a charity auction in Tokyo. For Veuve Clicquot, it was essential to collaborate with a joyful, hopeful and optimistic personality like Kusama, much like Madame Clicquot herself. These two extraordinary women—despite being separated by 150 years—both yearned to gain independence and conquer the world. Madame Clicquot was one of the few female entrepreneurs of her era in the early 1800s. As a 27-yearold widow, she took the reins of her late husband’s champagne house at a time when women didn’t have the right to work. With major innovations such as creating the first known vintage in 1810, the first known blended rosé in 1818 and the design of the Maubeuge bottle, this young widow revolutionized the champagne world. Kusama pioneered immersive experiences in art— notably with her Infinity Nets and Mirrored Rooms— where the viewer’s body and mind are integral parts of the work. As one of the few female artists of her era to make a living from her art, Kusama conquered the male-dominated art world during her time in New

York from 1958 to 1973. Now, at 92 years of age, she’s considered one of the world’s most famous and brilliant living artists. “My Heart That Blooms in The Darkness of The Night” is Kusama’s tribute to La Grande Dame, who shared her love of beauty and the avant-garde—and a drive for excellence. Indeed, Madame Clicquot understood that good champagne wasn’t enough to win over New York and St. Petersburg; the beauty of the product itself—the bottle, label and design—were just as important. As La Grande Dame once said: “Our wine must be both flattering on the eyes and on the palate.”

It was also her belief that pinot noir had the potential to make the best champagne, so she acquired 10 of the House’s 12 pinot noir parcels. But these grapes are delicate, and their expression varies depending on the terroir, weather and harvest conditions (and determines if a year will be declared a vintage). It’s these grapes that provide the structure and strength of La Grande Dame 2012, from Grands Crus and the House’s historic plots, among the most prestigious in the Champagne region of France: Aÿ, in the Grande Vallée de la Marne, and Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims. The magic is also in the blend, with 90 per cent pinot noir and 10 per cent chardonnay from the Grands Crus of Avize and MesnilSur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs. “It is playful, lively and laughing,” says Didier Mariotti, Veuve Clicquot’s Chef de Caves. “This new vintage offers a strong minerality carried by pinot noir balanced with the freshness of the blend. Its aging potential is immense.”

Single-malt Scotch whisky is often associated with cigar lounges and special occasions—and the idea of using it in a cocktail is downright scandalous. “Luscious with vanilla and pear, succulent orange and honeysuckle, all drizzled with chocolate fudge, X by Glenmorangie is perfect paired with a favourite mixer,” says Lumsden. Lumsden’s ideas come to life in The Lighthouse, Glenmorangie’s new experimental distillery designed by Paris-based Barthélémy Griño Architects. Described by Glenmorangie as a “playground for whisky makers,” the 20-metre-high glass stillhouse, which towers above the Scottish coastline, was created to push the boundaries of traditional whisky-making. And while The Lighthouse sits on the same property as Glenmorangie’s original distillery—built of stone more than 175 years ago—the new facility was designed exclusively for experimentation and injecting creativity into an age-old process. With two updated copper stills as tall as giraffes, The Lighthouse includes a purpose-built sensory

laboratory and a brew house to experiment with mashing and brewing. The whisky’s sweet and rich taste both complements and cuts through mixers to create delicious cocktails. Chef Álvaro Clavijo returned to his homeland after working in top kitchens across Europe and North America, opening El Chato in a moody space with plenty of exposed brick, an open kitchen, a spice library and a chef’s table on the second floor. The menu reflects local ingredients, from local producers, often blending Colombian ingredients with Creole flavours. Nassau is an easily navigable city whose different neighbourhoods reflect its multi-faceted face. Downtown

Downtown, easily accessible from the cruise port and popular Paradise Island, is a history-filled collection of banks, shops and pastel-pink government buildings. Bay Street is the main shopping and eating area and home of the famous straw market, the place to go for handmade Bahamian crafts and straw vendors, who make up one of Bahamas’ oldest industries. (Stick to the authentic artisans. There’s a lot of tourists at the market too.) Spend time downtown and you’ll get to know the distinct rhythm of the city. Bustling by day, downtown goes quiet at 5 pm, as if a light switch has been flicked off. That’s when cruise goers return to their ships. Then a few hours later, as the sun sets the pace picks up again as locals and overnighters make their way to restaurants and bars. Nature and historical sites are all within walking distance as is Junkanoo beach, the closest beach to downtown.

Cable Beach

On the north shore of New Providence, just a few miles west of Nassau, Cable Beach is the home of many upscale resorts lining its two-anda-half miles of fabulous white sand beach. Though Nassau has everything to recommend it, a day trip to one of the country’s out islands shouldn’t be missed to get the total Bahamian experience. Take a ferry or hop a plane for a quick flight to walk along pink sand beaches or swim with the pigs. Exuma

Your trip to the Bahamas really isn’t complete without an excursion to Exuma, a collection of 365 islands and cays, sand bars, reefs, grottos, translucent water, and even a huge swing in the middle of the ocean (at Coco Plum beach at low tide). Some of the islands are wild, others are tamed but privately inhabited by the rich and famous (Johnny Depp fell in love with Exuma when filming Pirates of the Caribbean and bought one of them), and others are waiting for you. This includes Big Major Cay, where you’ll find the real stars of Exuma: the wild pigs. In fact, Big Major Cay is also known as Pig Island. The porcines will swim up to your ferry waiting for a food handout. And, if they’re in a good mood you can swim with them. ying face down on the massage table, listening to the soft sounds of pleasant music in the Zen-like treatment room, I grappled ever-so-slightly with a decision to make. As the massage therapist worked out the kinks in my back that real-world reality had worked in, I needed to decide whether or not to close my eyes and succumb to the physical and auditory pleasantries or keep them open to watch the brightly coloured koi swimming effortlessly below me. From the massage table, my small window to the world was positioned over the plexi-glass floor affording me an experience like nothing I had ever had. I opted to watch the fish—who seemed to float in space below me the longer I lay there. Once I rolled over, I closed my eyes and let the darkness of the aromatic eye pillow escort me to that space of in-and-out delight. The property has numerous dining and drinking options although nothing can compare to Mesa 1—one of the world’s most exclusive restaurants. It goes without saying that reservations are required for this select seven-course dining extravaganza guaranteed to be an experience you will never forget. Spice Market is an easy way to “Retox” with fresh specialties from Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia and a personal favourite of mine and anyone who loves the combination of fresh and spicey global foods. Of the numerous restaurants on site, the hands-down, most popular kid in class is Chevycheria (everyone calls him ‘Chevy’). The al fresco restaurant, with its thatched roof and 1950s-era Chevrolet truck, is the place to enjoy ceviche like you’ve never had before. Punta de Mita is known for its ceviche and in addition to a daily special based on the catch of the day, the Chevy menu includes ceviche with shrimp and scallops, tuna and avocado, coconut and blended signature dishes that, much like the AWAY Spa, can easily be a destination onto itself. After a successful ‘Retox’ there is only one thing left to do. Repeat. The W Punta de Mita is surrounded by picturesque towns and villages with shopping, dining and even a polo club that make for great day trips. Wine The vineyards of Valais, which account for a third of Switzerland’s total wine production, yield some remarkable vintages, an outcome of its geologically rich soil and surprisingly dry yet verdurous valley climate. One of the things that keeps me coming back to Hong Kong is the number of worlds stretched out right in front of you. You can take in a show at the new M+ Museum in bustling West Kowloon. Less than an hour later you can be admiring a temple decorated in shades of fiery red and gold alongside a beautiful beach on Peng Chau Island. Stay: The W Hotel is a stylish, five-star property in West Kowloon. It’s connected to the Elements shopping mall and has the highest outdoor swimming pool in Hong Kong. The Eaton Hong Kong is a bright, clean, convenient hotel on Nathan Road in the Jordan neighbourhood. It’s rated four-stars and also is eco-certified. I had a great stay there on my last visit. Eat: Located on the 102nd floor at the Ritz Carlton, Tin Lung Heen serves up authentic Cantonese cuisine, including dim sum. The views of Hong Kong and Victoria Harbour are truly spectacular. Explore: The Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market, which opens at 6 a.m., is a great place to shop in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Look for luscious, fresh pineapples and plums, as well as Asian delicacies such as colourful dragon fruit. I loved visiting in the pre-dawn hours on my last trip.

WEST KOWLOON CULTURAL DISTRICT (WKCD) This is the newest area of Hong Kong, built on reclaimed land in storied Victoria Harbour over the past few years. The district is believed to be one of the largest public projects in the world, with 17 cultural venues and a central park. It’s also home to new, world-class museums, the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the M+. The latter is said to be Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture. The Hong Kong Palace Museum will focus on Chinese art and culture and is slated to open mid-2022. The WKCD also includes one of the world’s most strikingly modern designs in the Xiqu Centre, which stages Chinese opera performances. The building features a tall, wavy, metallic exterior with thousands of aluminum ribs. You enter and find yourself under waves of brilliant white, thin panels and a giant, red and white coloured light fixture that’s meant to mimic a grand chandelier. It’s truly one of the most spectacular bits of architecture you’ll ever see. The WKCD has quickly become the cultural and artistic centre of Hong Kong, a place enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Not only is the district a hip and happening region of its own, but the views of central Hong Kong and the peaks of Hong Kong Island are astonishing. You’ll catch amazing sunsets from the west side of the district. Designers here have created plenty of open space, with wide expanses of deep green lawn, folding wooden chairs to relax on, as well as palm trees and deciduous trees. It’s less than one kilometre from the ferry dock in Tsim Sha Tsui to the WKCD. You also can take public transit to the West Kowloon station, itself an architectural masterpiece. The West Kowloon Cultural District also includes parts of two great Hong Kong neighbourhoods; Jordan and Yau Ma Tei. Jordan is home to Hong Kong’s famous night market, where you can find everything from watches to antiques. There also are a plethora of casual food stalls. Yau Ma Tei is home to carefully crafted historic buildings such as the Yau Ma Tei Theatre and the Tong Lau building on Shanghai Street.

Eat: Wing On Street is abuzz with traditional Hong Kong cafes such as Kee Sum that specialize in foods such as deep-fried shrimp toast or, yum, ice cream pineapple bun. Try Bo Ma for delicious milk tea. Explore: One of the coolest places to check out on Peng Chau is the Fook Yuen Leather Factory, an historic building erected in the 1930s. Today’s owners have transformed the grounds into a wildly colourful “secret garden,” with odd, fascinating displays made up of old chairs, bicycles, and even a yellow submarine.

PENG CHAU ISLAND This horseshoe-shaped island is a tiny little slice of old-style Hong Kong, with a pretty beach, casual seafood restaurants and fascinating temples. You know you’re in a different place than Kowloon when you get off your boat and find dozens of folks scattered about on old plastic chairs, playing mah jong or other games. Some locals have donated exercise bikes, which residents and visitors can use to work off a big lunch in a shady spot overlooking the sea. There are no cars allowed on the island, so this is a wonderful spot for a getaway. The island was once home to buzzing factories that made porcelain and other materials. They’re mostly closed now, but make excellent Instagram photo material. Explorers will find small art galleries scattered about the island, as well. Lung Mo Temple is built across the road from crescent-shaped Tung Wan Beach, which makes sense when you understand that Lung Mo is a Chinese goddess of water. Tin Hau Temple has a bronze bell that dates to the 1700s. Take the gentle hike to the top of 96-metre-high Finger Hill and enjoy the view of Ngan Chau Tsai Pavilion, an open-air affair with a graceful green roof. Try a walk down a short path to the right of the pavilion for great views of orange-hued rocks along the water. Another great Instagram spot is Tai Lei Island, a tiny drop of an island that’s connected to Peng Chau by a short bridge. There’s a small beach with a rock that looks like a turtle emerging from the ocean. Peng Chau’s small markets teeming with locals, coffee and tea shops, and more, keep it buzzing. “Peng Chau,” says Hong Kong tour guide Olivia Tang, “has many goodies packed in a small box.”

riving a rental car through a country when you can’t read the signage really ups the vacation tension factor. It’s fun to see the sights of course, but not exactly relaxing. That’s why boarding our Emerald Cruise Line ship proved to be such a contrast. We’d loved our days on the road, but there was something soothing about handing over travel control to the white-uniformed captain and his crew. We’d see all the sights between Amsterdam and Budapest but someone else would be in charge of getting us there—the lazy joys of river cruising. The fun began before we set sail with a private boat tour of the canals of Amsterdam. Gliding along ancient waterways was the perfect way to settle into a cruising state of mind. Later, after boarding, we watched through the glass doors of our suite as the ship pulled away from the dock. We unpacked and congratulated ourselves for booking this mode of travel. There would be no more traffic and no schlepping of suitcases from car to hotel for a week. We had a floating home! But lovely as our suite was, we didn’t linger—there was too much to see and do

We started with a visit to the bridge, and drinks on the sunny upper deck. The captain was eager to explain how his huge collection of dials and gauges worked and even offered us a chance to take the wheel. We’d have happily chatted with him and lolled in the sun forever but soon had to head to the lounge for our first port talk. Never having explored this part of Europe, we found the daily port talk covering the next day’s adventures made it easy to plan. Emerald offers shore excursions each day, most of which are walking or small group bus tours of local sites, but you’re also welcome to explore on your own. Each port talk gives you an orientation to the next day’s stop, explaining whether you’ll dock in easy walking distance to a town or if you’ll need transportation. You can choose between what Emerald offers, or hire one of the cabs or private tour companies that are always gathered at the dock. A word to the wise – if you choose to explore on your own, be sure to arrange for a return that’s at least an hour in advance of sailing. If you’re not on board when the ship leaves, it will be up to you to make your way to the next port! After the port talk, dinner was next on the agenda and we were impressed not only by the extensive menu choices and the elegant dining room décor but also by the service. The chef and his team pride themselves on creating menus that celebrate the cuisine of each region the ship sails through, so our first night’s dinner included such Dutch treats as herring, bitterballen, krokets, rookworst (sausages) and snert (a traditional pea soup). We tried a little of everything, trying hard to remember that each day would bring a different collection of culinary treats. Is it any wonder that cruise guests come home heavier than when they left? The post-dinner entertainment that evening was low-key but charming—a local band who came aboard to play traditional Dutch tunes in the lounge. Afterwards, we headed to our suite to watch the lights on the river bank twinkling in the darkness. We knew that the week ahead would be filled with the wonders of Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. There would be fascinating medieval towns and hilltop castles to explore, and we’d ride the ship’s bikes through the countryside and along the rivers our ship was sailing. We’d visit wineries and enjoy guided tours of not one, but four exciting capital cities along the way—and Emerald’s talented staff and crew would handle every detail. We were already captivated by the magic of river cruising and it was only day one. .

a variety of activities including paddle boarding and snorkelling. Emerald Azzurra will also feature three tenders and two zodiacs for shore landings. Additionally, the ship features an onboard wellness centre complete with gym and spa. But we can’t ignore river cruising. One of the most popular aspects of this mode of travel is the way it allows for experiential travel. River cruises stop in small ports where guests can simply walk off the ship and explore. Yes, it’s wonderful to be wowed, but it’s even better to be educated. Ports of call in between Cartagena and Lima included a day’s fascinating transit through the Panama Canal; we had so many highly credentialed experts on board as part of the Eclipse’s Discovery Team, it was hard to decide where to start—with the Canal historian, the biologist, one of the two geologists, the anthropologist, the ornithologist, the naturalist, and more. Our other ports of call included a magical morning in the Utria National Natural Park (northern Colombia), enjoying the wildlife, the spectacular flora, and the peaceful mangroves; a thrilling few hours off the coast of southern Peru, around Isla Guañape, cruising in Zodiacs, savouring playful encounters with spirited South American sea lions and tuxedoed Humboldt penguins; an evening in Salaverry, marvelling at the majestic tricks and turns of the famous Paso horses and their skillful gauchos; and in stark contrast to the rainforests and jungles, a day in Trujillo, Peru’s second-largest city, exploring history and culture.

ur helicopter hovered, it seemed, a bare 100 feet above the glittering cerulean waters of the Caribbean, dotted with the San Blas islands, off the coast of Panama. This was our first day out of port (Cartagena), on an extraordinary 10-day journey (which would terminate in Lima), with Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, cruising on the uncompromisingly luxurious explorer yacht, Eclipse. I had eagerly signed up for one of the helicopter rides the ship had scheduled today. Equipped with not one, but twin, state-of-art (James Bond-looking, clad in glistening black) helicopters, the Eclipse has a crackerjack aircrew on board; they were busy all day, as groups of six passengers eagerly hopped into the super-quiet cabin. (Bose headsets also help to suppress extraneous noise, all the better to hear the pilot describe all that we were seeing below.) There are more than 350 islands in this archipelago, some 50 of them inhabited by the Guna people. There are also so many things to see below in the jade and azure undulating waters—a few surprising shipwrecks, schools of fish on the hunt for smaller prey, and the occasional lone fisherman plying his luck from a canoe. This helicopter ride will stay with me forever—a rare glimpse into the sapphire sea from above; this singular journey was so very typical of the care and thought that Scenic puts into all its cruise itineraries and excursions. From takeoff to landing back on the deck of the Eclipse, it was a thrill.

While I had sailed with Scenic previously (a delightful river cruise in France), this was a rare opportunity to experience the company’s recently christened (Dame Helen Mirren is the vessel’s godmother), Eclipse, billed as the world’s first discovery yacht, and worthy, indeed, of that epithet. My voyage took place during late October/early November, and the Halloween gala and specialty party feast the chefs organized was yet another fab shindig that will remain indelibly etched in my brain: The day we crossed the equator, we had a costume party to celebrate the loss of our equatorial virginity. Sailors who have never crossed the equator are Slimy Pollywogs, but after the crossing, become Trusty Shellbacks, sons and daughters of Neptune. (I even have a floridly calligraphed certificate to prove my seaworthiness!) If a helicopter ride captivates your fancy, you’ll also be interested in taking a ride on the ship’s submersive, or baby submarine. It cannot be launched at all ports (maritime laws for each region, local underwater ecology, the weather and the tides dictate this), but if you get a chance to do it—you must. The submarine can go down to 1,000 feet and it accommodates six people. With glass vistas all around and swivel seats, you can have figurative eyes in the back of your head. Even if you do not have the opportunity to go underwater, there is so much to do on board—and a spa/yoga/Pilates/gym area, with 6,000 serene square feet. You’ll be hard-pressed, frankly, to leave your comfy veranda suite (Eclipse can accommodate 228 guests, and for polar expeditions, 200), as they are among the most elegantly decorated and designed I’ve ever stayed in at sea—safety, sustainability, discovery and luxury are all married into the design. What You Need to know When Cruising with Scenic Cruises What does it take to get on board?

Physical distancing and masking procedures

Scenic requires all guests to have received the required dose(s) of an approved Covid-19 vaccine. Guests are also required to complete a pre-departure medical health evaluation. Crew goes through daily health and temperature checks. Guests undergo a mandatory briefing and health screening – which may include a rapid COVID test before boarding the Space Ship. A negative Covid PCR test, taken within 72 hours of departure, is required to board the ship. For guests who require a Covid test before returning home, the line will provide a complimentary test near the end of their cruise.

Checking in and out of the ship at ports is now completely contact-free. A phased embarkation allows guests to arrive and depart smoothly and with safe social proximity. Contact-free hand sanitizer dispensers are available in all public spaces and guest corridors on board, while automated doors and contactfree guest servicing minimizes the number of touchpoints. Face masks are required to be worn by crew at all times and by guests in public areas. Scenic provides guests with masks. The food and beverage service has been adapted to ensure extra care is taken in order to minimize social contact with dining tables restricted to no more than six (excepting the chef’s table) and staff served buffets. In port, guests will travel in smaller groups, while respecting social proximity and destination specific regulations. All coaches are sanitized daily and kept at half capacity to ensure ample space between guests.

AIR QUALITY Scenic Space Ships are equipped with air circulation systems that ensure there is no re-circulation of inside air anywhere on board the ship. All cabins/suites have individual controls and all air flow comes from filtered outside air.

Current Capacity Limits There are no limits on capacity at this time as Scenic Space Ships provide ample public space to accommodate far more guests than are both currently sailing and if the ships were filled. The ships carry between 96 and 171. Guests appreciate that they get to know the crew and other passengers during their time onboard.
