SAYING…. YES I DO!

ONGRATULATIONS, YOU’RE ENGAGED!

Now do me a favour and forget everything you think is “required” for a wedding. Because truly, there are no requirements when it comes to your special day, and no one blueprint for all weddings. I firmly believe that all the weddings in the world – be it small or grand, intimate or luxurious – should be the perfect opportunity to reaffirm your commitment in a way that will help you create everlasting memories. Your wedding is all about celebrating you, the love and affirmation you feel for each other and it’s even better when you enter into that day feeling like the most beautiful version of yourself.

Saying “Yes I Do!” not only to your partner is something fantastic, but also saying it for yourself is perhaps one of the most beautiful life commitments you can express: “Yes, I do deserve to enjoy this day to the fullest because I have so much love to share”.

Turn to your unique story. How did you meet? How do you make each other feel? Look to questions like these (and the answers!) for inspiration and you’ll start to create the outline for a beautiful day.

If you find yourself presented with something that does not feel like “you,” whether it’s walking down the aisle, doing that first dance or wearing a certain style of attire, simply put your own spin on it or skip it – really! The couples who stay true to themselves throughout the planning process end up with weddings they love – and we can’t wait to share. Want to see how other couples say ‘Yes I Do?’ Check out our Real Celebrations (p. 30). Planning to wed in a beachy locale? You’ll want to see some of our favourite places to say “Yes I Do! in “Love Islands” (p.24). And, if you need ideas for a memorable honeymoon spot, discover some of the best all-inclusive luxury resorts around the world in “Relaxed Romance” (p.28).

I hope you feel as inspired by this issue as we felt creating it. Bon voyage, and here’s to a lifetime of fulfilment, friendship and love.

ESSENTIALS

INES DI SANTO

One of the fastest growing wedding trends may indeed be the destination wedding itself –because who doesn’t love celebrating with their nearest and dearest in a tropical locale? But, there’s always the matter of what to wear. Here, we round up the best wedding style essentials.

Getaway Style 2023 GOWN GLAM

TREND: BEDAZZLED BODICE

Pearls, crystals, delicate embroidery, and lace appliqué – eye-catching bedazzled bodices are in high demand in the world of wedding dresses. These bejeweled pieces can add subtle hints of classic glamour or steal the show with glinting gemstones and intricately-detailed appliqués or floral motifs.

TREND: LAYERS OF LOVE

A Mille-feuille may have been our pastry of choice, but this year in the fashion wedding space, the voluminous, multilayered look was making our ball gown dreams come true. Whether an A-line layered skirt or a train with tulle upon neverending layers of tulle, dresses with texture and volume are all at once fun, fancy and fabulous.

THE DETAILS

TRUE GLOVE

The glove is the true accessory of the moment, and it sure is a stand out. From full length, tea length, delicate lace and even gloves with showstopping accents, adding a pair of gloves can elevate your look and bring the red carpet old Hollywood glam vibes to your special day.

TREND: STATEMENT BACK

Those seeking a more sultry, form-enhancing shape are going to love the plethora of lowback dress options. A low back detail is a fantastic way to add a touch of extravagance to even the most minimalist chic gowns. Bonus points for jaw-dropping looks from every angle.

FRESH VEILS

Embellished with pearls, or adorned with majestic floral appliques, this year veils truly stepped into the limelight. No longer are veils just for hiding behind – these pieces separate themselves from years past, shaking up tradition by bringing glitz and originality to your look.

SUIT UP

TREND: A BOLD TAKE

Looking for a more laidback suiting option, but still wanting to keep in a more traditional colour scheme? Consider a bold striped suit in complementary tones for a fresh, fashion-forward fit. A destination wedding allows you to infuse your personality into your day. Experiment with colours, try an exaggerated lapel – step out of your formal-attire comfort zone and veer towards the latest and greatest in the unconventional and unique suit options available.

STEP RIGHT UP

A simple, well structured loafer provides just the perfect measure of form and function for your big day. Choosing a neutral coloured shoe in a leather or suede is a more laid-back wedding option while still remaining classic enough to pull your day of look together. The Loafer, Aldo

CROWNING GLORY

Extra? Maybe. Incredible? Obviously. Adding a crown or tiara to your wedding outfit adds a handful of glam and a whole lot of royalty. From basic to intricate, elegant to bold, the options for crowns are seemingly endless. Fabric flowers, crystals, beads, and handwoven metals – whatever your vision, a crown will make your day both magical and memorable.

BEST FOOT FORWARD

An elegant slide or chic ankle wrap can easily and comfortably take you from morning to evening, with no finicky heels in sight. A touch of crystal embellishment gives your celebratory sandal just the right amount of sparkle. Ankle-wrap, Aldo.

WEDDING DAY GORGEOUS!

YOU’VE CHOSEN A breathtaking destination backdrop for your dream “I do’s.” Next up on your list –making your hair, skin and nails big-day (and photo!) ready with a focus on bringing out your natural beauty. Whether you prefer all-out-glamour or subtle touches, here are six beauty trends to consider when planning your ultimate bridal look.

HAIR

1 GO HIGH GLOSS

More and more brides are opting for sleek and sophisticated hairstyles. The well-loved, “model off duty” slicked-back low bun can be a simple, face-framing option for when you want to let your makeup, jewelry or dress make the statement. A subtle shine keeps hair looking and feeling healthy and vibrant. For the perfect glossy look, try JVN Nourishing Shine Drops to add the crowning touch – a dash of shine. $30, Sephora.

SKIN

2 GLOW UP

Dewy skin is here to stay. Properly hydrating skin and creating a dewy, plump canvas for makeup sets the stage for a flawless wedding day look. Whether you’ve chosen to go bold with your palette, or are keeping things classic, creating an ethereal glow is the perfect compliment to that true-love-grin you’ll be wearing all day long. To get the look, apply Innisfree Dewy Glow Jelly Cream after cleansing your skin, and before adding your makeup. Don’t forget to take your dreamy glow all the way down to your chest and collarbone for a full body sheen. $32, Sephora.

3 SCREEN QUEEN

We all know sunscreen is key, no matter what the climate, when it comes to preventing premature aging, and it is an absolute necessity if you’re planning on a sunny destination. In 2023, the latest offerings shield us from the sun's harmful rays, and also pack

is everything we want for face and body (don’t forget the decolletage!), especially on such a monumental day. $170, cledepeaubeaute.ca.

MAKEUP

4 ROMANTIC FLUSH

Achieving that perfect, lit-from-within flush is as simple as a great, buildable liquid blush. Creamy formulations melt seamlessly into

the skin, providing hydration and buildable colour, allowing you to achieve the perfect romantic flush and leaving you photo ready. To achieve this luminous look, try gently patting some Drunk Elephant O-Bloos Rosi Glow Drops directly onto the highest part of your cheekbones. Add another layer for a deeper flush. $48, Sephora.

5 BOLD BROWS

Full, feathered and natural-looking brows continue to dominate the wedding landscape in 2023. Every modern bride knows that even if you don’t have full brows on your own, “fake it ’til you make it” is the name of the game. The

Kybrow’s spoolie brush combs and sets your eyebrows for a lasting and face-framing finish. $23, Shoppers Drug Mart.

NAILS

6 HEAVENLY

GLAZE

A pearlescent chrome finish adds a modern, dreamy touch to even the most subtle of nail polishes. Pair it with a nude tone, a la “Glazed donut” trend made famous by Hailey Bieber, and you up the elegance factor. Make your last polish layer Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Top Coat in “Unicorn” to achieve this much sought-after look. $15.99, Shoppers Drug Mart.

The Essential Planning Checklist

Here’s how to make that dream celebration on location a beautiful reality. Use this as your guide to designing your big day.

THE ESCAPE of a destination wedding is what people love most about them,” says Diana Pires, event planner and founder of Toronto’s Diana Pires Events. “You are gathering your dearest in a beautiful location to enjoy new and unique cultural experiences together. Guests feel like they are being taken away on an adventure, and destination weddings create a wonderful vacation opportunity for everyone.”

Sound like the perfect party, but worried it’s too much to manage? Trust when we say a destination wedding is easier to plan than you think. Like any great event, it does take some thoughtful – and at times intensive –planning at the outset.

“There are things you need to seriously

think about before booking,” says Pires, who has planned luxury destination weddings in locations including Portugal, Greece and the Dominican Republic. “This experience is about you, but also your guests, so you want to check out the surrounding areas and what’s on offer in the region for guests to explore. You also need to consider the travel from the airport to your wedding location –this is important to guests.”

Once you nail down where and get familiar with the logistics of getting hitched in your chosen locale, it comes down to getting the finer details of the day organized on a well-paced timeline before you jet.

With the help of Pires, we’ve done the work for you and created this 12-month countdown to help keep all those requisite destination wedding planning tasks on track.

What To Pack For Your Honeymoon

YOU’RE OFF to tie the knot and spend your blissful honeymoon on a beach soaking up the sun and the sand – or you’re a guest at a wedding at a sexy, warmweather destination (or even a gorgeous hotel with a fab pool), and want to make sure you look just as chic on the catamaran cruise as the beachside rehearsal brunch.

Bikini? Board shorts? Full-coverage or body positive? “When it comes to choosing the right swimwear, it’s important to consider your body shape and the style that makes you feel comfortable and confident,” says Yasmine Hamdi, Social Media Coordinator & Brand Ambassador at Bikini Village. If you’re pairing a string bikini top, for example, with a full-coverage bottom, it’s key, says Hamdi, to consider the proportions of the two pieces. Her tip? Choosing solid colours and similar patterns for both pieces can be a good idea to create balance.

We connected with Hamdi for more of her top tips and bathing suit picks on what to pack for a hot-weather destination wedding or honeymoon, and how to wear them. PS there are even his-and-her styles – chic, coordinated sets that say you’re in this together. Isn’t that romantic?

BOLD TRAVELLER: What should every bride think of when it comes to buying a suit for a destination wedding?

BIKINI VILLAGE: Think about your comfort level. While it’s important to feel confident and stylish in your swimsuit, it’s also important to make sure you’re comfortable enough. You certainly don’t want to spend your entire holiday worrying about your swimsuit riding up or falling off.

EXPERT PICK: Sea Level Spinnaker white one-piece swimsuit, $190.

WHY WE LIKE IT: The clean white tone is on point for a bridal getaway; pairing with white shorts or a bright pareo wrap give it style mileage; and the deep-V neckline elongates the silhouette and draws the eye upward.

BT: What are the key trends to look for in swimwear, and especially in bikinis, now?

BV: Swimwear trends are constantly evolving, and this season we’re seeing some exciting styles hit the beach. Crochet details are a big hit, adding texture and a boho-chic vibe.

Cutouts are another popular trend, creating an edgy yet flattering silhouette. Lace details and floral prints are also in, adding a touch of femininity to beachwear. Additionally, earth tones are having a moment, with natural colours like warm browns and greens being embraced for their versatile and understated look. As always, it’s important to choose swimwear you feel comfortable and confident in, so you can enjoy your time in the sun with ease and style.

EXPERT PICK: Rip Curl Ocean Together crochet bikini top, $99.95; bottom, $84.95.

WHY WE LIKE IT: Great coverage from top to bottom, even with the open weave; the tassel ties at the shoulders and at the hips add a feminine, boho-chic detail and a flexible fit; and the bralette-style top does double-duty, easily slipping under a white shirt or blazer for evening.

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CARING FOR YOUR SWIMWEAR

To keep your swimsuits looking their best, there are a few things to keep in mind, says Yasmine Hamdi:

• Avoid throwing them in the washing machine, as this can cause damage to the fabric and delicate details. Instead, hand-wash with a gentle detergent and cool water;

• Always hang your swimsuits to dry in a shady spot to prevent fading and to keep their shape;

• Never, ever leave your swimsuits damp and balled up in a beach bag for a prolonged period of time. This is a sure way to create a funky, musty smell that will make even the bravest beach-goers turn and run. Wash and dry as soon as possible to keep swimsuits fresh and ready for your next adventure.

help support and accentuate curves. For more voluptuous figures, swimsuits with thicker or adjustable straps, as well as underwire, can provide the support needed for a fuller bust.

To accentuate and add shape, swimsuits with gathers and knots at the waist, as well as high-waisted bottoms, can create the illusion of curves and add a little volume where needed.

EXPERT PICK: For the voluptuous, try the Miracle Illusionist swimsuit, $254; to add curves, try the highwaisted bikini from Kulani Kinis, top, $70; bottom, $66 – and get him a matching pair of volley shorts, $96.

WHY WE LIKE IT: For the curvy girls, this white suit has a sexy deep-V and full-support halter-style neckline, to show off shapely shoulders; and Bikini Village carries a wide selection of D-Cups and up. Sporty types will appreciate the high-waisted Kulani Kinis bottom, and the fuller, bralette style top. And who doesn’t love a matching pair?

And don’t forget the accessories!

BT: Are there certain styles that suit and support more voluptuous silhouettes – and also, to help accentuate and add shape for those of us that aren’t blessed with curves?

BV: When it comes to finding swimwear that flatters different body types, certain styles can

“Don’t be afraid to play with accessories to balance out your look,” says Bikini Village’s Hamdi. A wide sun hat, for example, can help create a more balanced silhouette, while a statement pair of sunglasses can draw attention to your face and add some extra flair to your beachwear ensemble.” bikinivillage.com

ISLANDS

When it comes to dreamy places that kindle (or re-kindle!) passion, there’s no one-size-fits-all. For some, it’s about sunset walks on a golden beach and candlelit dinners underneath swaying palms. For others, it’s about sharing a heart-racing adventure or swoon-worthy cuisine. We’ve picked a few of our favourite islands that bring the sizzle.

YES I DO VOLUME I | 2023 25

SUN & SAND: ANGUILLA

Maybe it’s because you can’t fly here directly, but Anguilla has an air of exclusivity and seclusion that’s perfect for a romantic getaway. There aren’t any mass resorts, nor are there casinos, sprawling malls or Starbucks outlets. There aren’t even jet skis (they’re banned here). In fact, to get to Anguilla, you’ll need to fly into neighbouring St. Maarten and take the ferry. What it does have is 33 pristine beaches, most of them uncrowded (and without the constant drone of those pesky jet skis). Anguilla is also known for its ‘barefoot luxury’ with properties like the Four Seasons Resort and Residences, Belmond Cap Juluca and Zemi Beach House. The glamorous Malliouhana Resort (right) is fresh off its pandemic makeover, with Art Deco-inspired rooms and world-class spa. Anguilla is also known for its collection of ultra-luxe private villas. And Alkera is the latest to join this collection – a contemporary architectural gem with expansive glass panels, soaring ceilings and an open concept that blends indoor and outdoor living, with privacy, serenity and sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea.

FULL-ON NATURE: THE BLUE ZONE, COSTA RICA

A Blue Zone refers to a geographical region where people are healthier and live longer than anywhere else, often more than 100 years. There are only five Blue Zones in the world, one of them being the Nicoya Peninsula on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. So when it comes to wellness travel, the Blue Zone beckons. Here, the diet is primarily plant-based, and locals are committed to the pura vida lifestyle, which encourages us to slow down and connect with friends, family and nature. It’s easy to do that while surrounded by lush rainforest, secluded beaches and friendly locals. And there’s no better way to experience pura vida than with your loved one at a luxe wellness retreat. The new beachfront villas of Hotel Nantipa (left), set on a 5.7-acre property, are part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, with a new wellness centre and open-air treatment rooms. Hacienda AltaGracia, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, is a holistic wellness resort with an expansive hydrotherapy facility, Casa de Agua, and treatments that use local muds and oils.

WELLNESS: BALI

With its misty mountains, terraced hillsides and neon-green rice paddies, it’s almost impossible to feel any stress after spending a few days in Bali. The locals here also have a long tradition of wellness practices, and many spa treatments are based on Balinese and Hindu healing traditions. For a wellness getaway that oozes romance and adventure, Capella Ubud Bali – on a lush hillside terrace in the rainforest – offers 23 tented suites, each with a private plunge pool, inspired by Marco Polo’s expedition from China to Indonesia in the early 19th century. Its Auriga Spa (also in tents) offers signature treatments that reflect the varying energies of the lunar cycle; there’s also a 30-metre-long outdoor pool cocooned in the rainforest. Or escape to Como Shambhala Estate (above), another luxury wellness resort in the rainforest, which specializes in Ayurvedic treatments and holistic wellness. Another option is the Sacred River Spa at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, where you can get your chakras aligned before an evening candlelight mala meditation session for two.

SERENITY: THE ISLANDS OF TAHITI

Nothing says romance like an overwater bungalow, and arguably no one does it better than the Islands of Tahiti – indeed, the concept was invented here about 50 years ago. That’s because these volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean are surrounded by barrier reefs that create tranquil lagoons, dotted with tiny islands called motus. These lagoons are ideal for overwater bungalows, where you can plunge directly into the calm waters – in remarkable shades of blue – from your private deck. It’s also where you’ll find some of the most extravagant resorts in the world, with the highest levels of Polynesian hospitality –like the Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa (left), where you can amp up the romance with a sunset cruise around Bora Bora and a candlelit dinner beneath swaying palms. The intimate, idyllic Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa, part of the Relais & Châteaux collection, is designed in authentic Polynesian architectural style, just a five-minute-boat ride from Taha’a island, famous for its vanilla plantations and black pearl farms.

WEEKEND URBAN GETAWAYS

Not ready to commit?

Try one of these city breaks

MONTRÉAL: There’s always something to experience in North America’s romance capital, no matter the season. In winter, ice skate in Parc La Fontaine; in summer, sunbathe at the river ferryturned-floating spa, Bota Bota Bring your favourite bottle of wine to Le Millen, which offers a sevenor nine-course tasting menu (think, foie gras and pink peppercorn beef carpaccio). At Le Renoir, start the night with a glass of Champagne at the lounge bar in winter or terrasse in summer, before an evening of French gastronomy. Or head to Maison Boulud in the Ritz-Carlton Montréal for French tradition inspired by New York City; in winter, a 46-seat glass greenhouse provides a unique setting for dinner. Montréal’s nightlife is second to none, whether you’re looking for a sophisticated wine bar, trendy rooftop terrasse or secret cocktail lounge behind a hidden door. To stay, W Montreal has modern, edgy rooms; book the Extreme WOW suite for the hotel’s signature VIP service. At Hotel William Grey, two buildings dating back to the 18th century blend modern design and historic architecture, with stunning rooftop views of the city.

DETROIT: While Motor City may not initially come to mind as a romantic destination, Detroit’s Art Deco architecture, world-class entertainment and elevated culinary scene makes for a great weekend getaway – especially for couples interested in history, culture and music. The Siren Hotel, in Detroit’s Wurlitzer building – an Art Deco landmark built in 1926 – features carefully restored travertine floors and plaster detailing, with antiques from Italy, France and Belgium. Be sure to snag a spot at the eight-seat chef’s counter restaurant Albena by Chef Garrett Lipar, and grab some adult candy (aka creative cocktails) at The Candy Bar

Detroit is the home of Motown, so a trip here wouldn’t be complete without visiting one (or more) of its iconic music venues. Like Cliff Bell’s, established in 1935, with its mahogany leather banquettes and cabaret club vibe. Baker’s Keyboard Lounge is Detroit’s oldest jazz club, operating since 1934; jazz greats like Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and John Coltrane graced the stage here. Don’t forget to check out the Motown Museum, located in the former recording studio of Motown Records.

RELAXED ROMANCE

28 YES I DO VOLUME I | 2023 THE GUIDE | HONEYMOON ESCAPES
SANDALS ROYAL CURAÇAO

WHEN THE WEDDING is over, that’s when the magic really starts to happen.

The honeymoon is a couple’s time to decompress after the energy and stress of a wedding and do something that is, without a doubt, exclusively for them. And since no two couples are the same, it’s wonderful to know that there are allinclusive honeymoon resorts around the world that are designed for each type of couple.

An all-inclusive resort is the perfect setting for a honeymoon because couples can truly click into relaxation mode the minute they arrive. Fortunately, the world is blessed with some truly memorable all-inclusive resorts that are geared toward every type of traveler.

From over-the-top wellness resorts to idyllic private island paradises and farm-to-table culinary escapes, these are five of the best allinclusive honeymoon resorts around the world.

1 SANDALS ROYAL CURAÇAO

When it comes to honeymoons, Sandals Caribbean Resorts is no newcomer. What is new, however, is its latest resort on the island of Curaçao. Sandals Royal Curaçao opened in June 2022 and it seems the brand has outdone itself.

The brand-new resort sets the bar for luxury among other Sandals properties. The resort even has two new signature suite categories: Seaside Butler Bungalows and the Kurason Island Poolside Butler Bungalows. Each of these suites has Tranquility Soaking Tubs, private pools, and the signature Sandals butler service.

Sandals Royal Curaçao has eight restaurants to choose from, as well as three beachfront food trucks, all of which are included in the room rate. The list of inclusions at this romantic beach resort are seemingly endless, from PADI-Certified SCUBA equipment to the mini bars, daily and nighttime entertainment and shows, and unlimited Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks Wines.

Couples can spend their days lounging at the brand's first two-level infinity pool, or board a catamaran to sail the turquoise waters around Curaçao. It's a resort that encourages couples to choose their own adventure for a honeymoon to remember. sandals.com/royal-curacao

Not all all-inclusive resorts have to be on picture-perfect tropical islands. In fact, you can find some of the best all-inclusive hotels and resorts tucked in rural parts of the planet. If you’re looking for that country farmhouse vibe for your honeymoon, with bucolic landscapes instead of beaches, Twin Farms in Vermont may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Nestled amid rolling hills and wreathed in pine forests, Twin Farms is a five-star Relais & Chateaux property known for its provincial landscape, charming cottages, decadent spa, and haute cuisine.

The cottages here are deliciously romantic with fireplaces, jacuzzis, and deep soaking tubs. When couples aren’t ensconced in their private suites, they may be experiencing farmto-table dining at its finest. Think private wine cellar tastings, gourmet picnics, or chef’s table dinners. www.twinfarms.com

Mexico is a treasure trove of riches when it comes to romantic all-inclusive resorts. But there is something about Grand Velas Los Cabos that is, quite frankly, dreamy beyond belief. The design of the resort is sleek, chic, and sexy with spectacular suites, all of which have dramatic Pacific Ocean Views. Tip: The Grand Class Corner Suites are a cut above the rest with oceanfront views and plunge pools on the terrace.

Couples can steal away to a quiet corner of the pool to enjoy fresh tiradito or shrimp tacos al pastor. Things get a little more sexy and elegant at Cocina de Autor with its 8-course tasting menu, or the decadent tomahawk steak for two at Velas 10. Dress down at the resort’s spectacular spa. Of course, the allinclusive package at the resort is supreme, with inclusions like complimentary bottles of artisanal tequila and replenished bottles of wine. The resort also includes Don Julio 70, one of the most premium tequilas you can find. Dial up the romance with a melty deep tissue massage at the spa, or sip an artfully curated cocktail and watch the sky explode into a burst of colours at sunset. loscabos.grandvelas.com

4 MI RAVAL ARIZONA RESORT AND SPA, ARIZONA

For the couple that geeks out on spa treatments, lives for yoga, and thrives on the trails, Miraval Arizona is the perfect allinclusive honeymoon resort. This stylish, Southwestern hideaway helps couples to disconnect with the world to reconnect with each other in the rugged and wild landscape of the Sonoran desert.

The pampering starts at check-in. Each couple is given a dossier with the activities of the day, which can range from yoga to rock climbing. Of course, no honeymoon experience at Miraval is complete without

an indulgent trip to the stunning spa. The desert energy vibrates at a different frequency, and the Life in Balance Spa has a host of treatments that are only available at Miraval, featuring ingredients like Arizona clay and purple sage. For couples who want a little something extra, the astrological birth chart readings and sound baths are particularly unique.

Rooms are elegant and understated, harnessing that southwestern vibe but with an emphasis on luxury. White linens, exposed beams, stone, and tons of natural light fill the spaces. The Retreats are the most impressive. Couples will love the Reflection Retreat, which has a spa bath with free soaking tub and outdoor shower, full gourmet kitchen, and patio with reflection pool and fire pit. miravalresorts.com/arizona

LOUIS-JÉRÔME AND MARCO-AURÉLIO

LOUIS-JÉRÔME BarbosaDoise, 33, area managerCanada, Whyte & Mackay, and Marco-Aurélio Doise-Barbosa, 33, premium account manager, VGW, wanted a wedding that felt both timeless and chic, so they could “look back at it decades from now and still love every detail without feeling outdated or trendy,” says Louis-Jérôme.

Louis-Jérôme, who was born in Vancouver, paid homage to his Franco-German European roots with part of the ceremony spoken in English and French, as was Portuguese, to reflect the destination wedding, which took place in Brazil, where Marco-Aurélio was born, in Corinto in the province of Minas Gerais. And about that destination: “LJBD wanted

a destination wedding, and was very adamant about it,” says Marco-Aurélio. “We had already been to Rio de Janeiro once before, and he fell in love with the city, the views, the colours, the energy, the people. There was very little making him change his mind.” Marco’s home country, and Louis’ love of the sun, the city’s vibrancy, and their large diaspora of Brazilian friends living in Canada were all contributing factors – the couple knew then and there that it would be the perfect city to celebrate their union.

HOW THEY MET

They both spent time out in Toronto’s Gay scene, but had never really spoken or officially met. That magical night was in May 2017, at Fly, a gay club that unfortunately no longer exists. “It really was a love at first sight story,” recalls

Marco-Aurélio. “We were standing at the bar, each ordering drinks, locked eyes, and the deal was done.” They left the club, held hands, and walked around the city until the sun came up and the birds started chirping. “It was a truly beautiful and memorable experience that has shaped the last six years of our lives.”

WEDDING DAY THEME

“Love is a Revolution! The wedding was very proudly gay, respecting those who had fought for the right to marry before, so we could do without putting our lives in danger or our jobs in jeopardy for simply loving whom we love and being who we are,” says Louis-Jérôme. The colour palette inspiration was pastel rainbow, for the decor and the dress codes. Guests were given rainbow-hued fans to keep cool.”

THE INVITATION

The couple took inspiration from their love of travel. The invitation came in the form of a multi-lingual “boarding pass,” which was designed by a friend. These were sent out by mail, and a website with more up-to-date information was shared, as well.

THE VENUE

“We stumbled across Vila Santa Teresa, which is literally perched on top of the hills of Rio, with splendid views of the Flamengo, the Bay and Sugar Loaf, all watched over by the statue of Christ the Redeemer. This hotel, which is also featured in the Guide Louis Vuitton and Michelin, took our breath away. With a stunning combination of art-deco architecture and interior finishings, we could not have envisioned a better place to get married, it was truly a magical place to share that day.”

THE CEREMONY

“It was January 4, 2022, and it was very casual, hosted by two of our best friends, Yolaine Ayad and Vitor Costa. Yolaine hosted in French and English and Vitor hosted in English and Portuguese. There were tears of joy all around. They did a tremendous job in bringing an international group of strangers together to join in this celebration of love. The ceremony in itself was short, 20 minutes, sprinkled with anecdotes of our lives before each other, and since we’d met. We also highlighted the ceremony with an intimate blessing of the rings; as we are not religious, but respect the powers of Mother Earth, the blessing involves passing the rings through the four elements.”

THE CELEBRATION

“The entire event was standing, no formal, sit-down hour-long banquet tables, all we wanted to do was dance and celebrate our love! Chandon Brut and Rosé along with wine, Caipirinhas, cocktails and beer stations were available all evening long. Dinner was served freestyle, inspired by Carioca and Brazilian foods, such as beef carpaccio, salmon verrines, salmon teriyaki cones, moqueca, picanha, polenta ragu. We were ready to dance, and did not want to be weighed down as we danced the night away!”

“OUR LIFE IS A HONEYMOON! OUR LOVE OF LIFE, PASSION TO TRAVEL, AND CHOSEN FAMILY MAKE EVERY DAY AN ADVENTURE”

THE POWER OF FLOWERS

Decoding the love language of flowers: from the Hawaiian Lei to the Turkish tulip.

FLOWER POWER. Flowers are admired and beloved throughout the world, but a little digging provides some fascinating insights into what they mean and symbolize in different countries. For centuries, flowers have helped people to share emotions they can’t express in words. “The love language of flowers” has been practiced in many societies, both ancient and modern.

THE CUSTOM OF LEIS IN HAWAII

Probably nothing captures the spirit of aloha like a lei. Introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers who sailed from Tahiti, leis were constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, and even animal bone and teeth. Among other sacred uses, the lei was used to signify a peace agreement between opposing chiefs.

With the advent of tourism, the lei quickly became the welcome symbol of Hawaii. Legend has it that departing visitors would throw their leis into the sea in the hopes that, like the lei, they too would return to the islands again someday. The Kaanapali Beach Hotel in Maui offers lei-making sessions at their Kawenaokeao Cultural Center.

THAI BLOSSOM TRIVIA

“If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change.” These words are from Siddhartha Gautama upon whose teachings Buddhism was founded. Floral offerings are an essential part of Buddhist culture.

Flower power is prevalent everywhere in Thailand, from the jasmine garlands hanging on your tuk tuk driver’s mirror to the lotus blossoms adorning spirit houses and temples. The lotus flower represents purity, enlightenment and faith. White jasmine

represents the bond between a mother and child. It is the preferred Mother’s Day gift amongst the Thais.

TURKIYE’S TULIP MANIA

Most people think tulips come from the Netherlands, but they were originally cultivated in Persia and the Ottoman Empire (Turkiye today). The period from 1718 to 1730 was known as the Tulip Era under the reign of Sultan Ahmed III, who adored the flower and often tucked one into his turban. Tulips were depicted in the arts, folklore, poetry and music.

In the 17th century, the tulip came to the Netherlands and became a status symbol selling for exorbitant prices; one bulb could cost the price of a house! Eventually this tulip mania craze crashed, but the tulip remains the national flower of the Netherlands and Turkiye. Keukenhof is the Netherlands’ most popular tulip destination, as millions visit every spring to marvel at the gardens in Lisse.
