From development to sale In the pharmaceutical industry everything revolves around medicines. They are developed, examined, tested, produced, packaged and sold. If there is any sector that requires precision and hygiene, it is this one. The aim is to support health as best as possible. Laboratories, plants and packaging companies therefore need to comply with strict (international) standards. Particularly the research, production and packaging areas have to be set up in accordance with various technical and sanitary regulations. Floor finishes can play a large role in this. Bolidt offers a broad range of floor and wall finishes that comfortably meet the strictest requirements. The systems are developed in-house, produced and processed on site by experts. Related sectors, in which Bolidt flooring is applied, are biotechnology, the biopharmaceutical industry, health care, nanotechnology and the food industry.
From orange to green The materials that Bolidt uses for its applications have been chosen with care. The use, consumption and reuse of the produced materials are given a lot of attention. Bolidt’s materials do not contain chemical thinners and are used up completely during application. In this way, the amount of leftovers and wastage is kept to a minimum. In addition, Bolidt products have a long life and remain suitable for (re) use, even after renovation or rebuilding. Current research into sustainable production and processing the materials in an efficient and economical way will be continued in the future. An increasing number of Bolidt products have obtained the ecological quality mark for synthetics. This guarantees optimum attention to regulations and minimal environmental impact of raw materials, products and leftovers. It also ensures close scrutiny of consumption and packaging and of factors that lead to a burden on people, machines and their surroundings. Every aspect of the company’s operation is run, not only with the present, but also with the future in mind.
From pore-free to scratch resistant
From pore-free to scratch resistant The materials that Bolidt works with are thermosetting synthetics. These synthetics, based on so-called polymers, are specifically developed by Bolidt for flooring and wall applications. Because the synthetics are applied in liquid form, the end product is seamless and the surface smooth and even. The pore-free composition and the absence of seams make it impossible for viruses and bacteria to grow or spread. Micro-bacterial research has shown that micro-organisms do not thrive or multiply on Bolidtop systems. The fact that the flooring systems are highly scratch resistant prevents bacteria-sensitive patches from forming after installation. Because of these qualities, cleaning is easy. At the same time, contamination does not cause any problems. Bolidt offers flooring that is resistant to disinfectants, chemicals, alcohols and solvents.
From electrically conductive to low maintenance The flooring systems of Bolidt are more than just hygienic. They are extremely durable, wear resistant and able to withstand high mechanical loads. The floors are resistant to heavy foot traffic and the stress caused by forklift trucks, pallet transport and air cushion vehicles. They are also resistant to chemicals such as organic and inorganic acids, caustics, salts, disinfectants and even solvents. In order to optimize the safety of employees and visitors, each system is available in a smooth or non-slip version. In addition, there are electrically conductive versions especially for explosion hazardous areas. Static charge is dissipated through these floors before it can even pose a threat. At the same time, sensitive equipment and (unmanned) automatic transport systems are protected against damage. For environments with high requirements, Bolidt provides high performance flooring.

From laboratory to packaging area Within pharmaceutical companies there are spaces with a wide range of purposes. For each of these spaces Bolidt offers effective flooring solutions. There is impact- and shockproof flooring for production areas, hygienic and chemical resistant flooring for laboratories; there are non-slip floor finishes for ‘wet areas’, heated ramps, roof car park systems and parking surfaces for car parks; there is design flooring for entrance halls and showrooms and finally, dustfree, durable flooring for packaging areas. From wear resistant to chemical proof Bolidt flooring is very much at home in industrial environments. Pallets being moved, forklift trucks driving and manoeuvring, heavy loads being lifted and set down, heavy objects falling: the right flooring is able to withstand such stresses. Add to this the remarkable resistance to a large number of chemicals such as organic and inorganic acids, lyes, salts, disinfectants and even solvents and the universal applicability in a wide range of spaces is evident. Given the fact that the combination of mechanical and chemical resistance is even available in electrically conductive versions, for instance for areas where an explosion hazard exists, the Bolidt flooring systems can be classed as true ‘all-rounders’ in this branch of industry.
From coved skirting to drain joints Bolidt systems are perfect for large surfaces, but also for small details. Bolidt offers a wide range of finishes. There are seamless connections to walls, fronts, columns, drains, thresholds and more. Corners of (less than) 90° can be avoided by the application of, for instance, coved skirting. The seamless, pore-free quality and easily accessible corners guarantee hygiene and facilitate compliance with both the HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) requirements. Points to consider per space
Entrance zone First impressions are formed in the entrance zone; this is the introduction to a building. In this area, colour, form and material are extremely important in achieving the desired atmosphere. From a functional point of view, high wear resistance and good cleanability are imperative. Dirt is walked in and the stress load on the entrance zone is high.
Hallways Hallways are the arteries of any building. Every day, they lead dozens to hundreds of people from one space to another. Trucks and trolleys provide additional stress. In transport aisles, forklift and pallet truck traffic places great demands on the flooring. High wear resistance is therefore a prerequisite for these areas, but an aesthetically appealing work environment is important as well. That is why Bolidt flooring is not only functional, but also offers a wide range of finishes. In addition, floors in production or laboratory areas usually have to meet strict requirements with respect to hygiene. Especially driverless transport systems (AGVs) can also require electrically conductive floor finishes.
Production areas All aspects of the production of pharmaceuticals have to fulfil the so-called GMP requirements. This production includes weighing, mixing, filling, sterilization, packaging and storage. With regard to the flooring, an overall well kept appearance and proper hygiene are most important (so it must be easy to clean and disinfect). Clean and light-coloured flooring makes dirt visible. The production areas or “white zones” can often only be entered through air locks. The locks are there to ensure that possible contamination is kept out of these areas and stays in the “grey zones”. The floor and the rest of the space remain in optimal condition.
Mechanical loads in pharmaceutical production range from light to high; from foot traffic to forklift transport, with or without the use of driverless transport systems. Chemical loads also vary, from moderate to high; substances with an explosion hazard deserve particular attention. For all these (combinations of) requirements, Bolidt has sophisticated, durable solutions. And what is not yet available, is being developed as you read this. Bolidt keeps innovating.
Storage rooms and warehouse In storage rooms and warehouses, pallet trucks and forklifts constantly drive back and forth. The floor finishes have to prevent the concrete subfloors from starting to wear and releasing cement dust. These floor finishes therefore mainly have a dust binding effect. Enhanced mechanical properties are also desirable. In addition, there may be requirements with respect to the electrical conductivity of the floor in cases where, for instance, AGVs (Automatic Guided Vehicles) are used or explosion hazardous materials are stored.
Laboratories and cleanrooms Cleanrooms are designed to limit contamination by airborne particles to specified maximums. International standards such as ‘ISO 14644-1’ and ‘US. FED STD 209D and E’ are used to classify cleanrooms by the cleanliness of their air. The concentration of airborne particles per m3 of air – whether or not combined with size specification – is measured to determine the room classification. Bolidt has smooth, pore-free flooring systems that meet the strictest requirements in this field. Sometimes, this will also require an electrically conductive finish. For instance, to eliminate explosion hazards caused by the presence of solvents or to protect sensitive equipment and driverless transport systems. Flooring in laboratories must always be resistant to the effects of a large number of chemicals. And, not unimportantly, it should contribute to an environment, in which employees work with pleasure and concentration.
Technical spaces Technical spaces in pharmaceutical production facilities sometimes take up as much as thirty to fifty percent of the total volume. In order to be able to guarantee the required high quality production environment, these facilities contain sophisticated technical installations. The installations cater for the continuous need for electricity, air, steam and heat. Especially the air handling units for cleanrooms occupy a lot of space. Low-maintenance and dust-free flooring systems are therefore advisable here.
Loading and unloading areas The loading and unloading of lorries by means of forklift trucks and hand pallet trucks places an extreme and abrasive load on the loading and unloading platforms. Since the activities (partly) take place outdoors, a wearresistant top layer that provides slip resistance in all weather conditions is required. Through many years of experience in developing wearing courses for bridges and ship decks Bolidt is able to offer perfected and extremely strong systems.
Offices Offices have to meet different requirements than the other spaces. The standards for hygiene are not as strict, but indirectly still important of course. Flooring systems here also have to be properly cleanable. Of most importance is a pleasant working environment. This can be achieved by proper sound insulation and attractive flooring. Bolidt flooring is available in numerous colours, designs and provides options for personalization.
Showrooms A showroom should have a pleasant atmosphere. The products on display need to be shown to their best advantage. Desired effects are widely different, ranging from modern professionalism to functional technology to comfortable warmth and colourful versatility. Bolidt offers a wide range of design possibilities that can be used to create whatever effect is needed.
Restaurant and canteen Restaurants and canteens are places for relaxation. The interior has to provide a pleasant setting. The choice of colour and material has a great impact on how the space is experienced. As well as creating the right atmosphere, the flooring needs to be functional. Because chairs and tables are moved around frequently, wear resistance is a must. Hygiene is equally important. The floor should be properly cleanable and therefore resistant to (caustic) cleaning products.
Toilets, changing rooms and showers Toilets, changing rooms and showers are used quite intensively. For this and other reasons, maintaining a high standard of hygiene is an essential flooring requirement. Right angles or sharp corners should be avoided to enable proper cleaning. This is realized by coved skirting with rounded and seamless transitions from floor to walls, which is produced on site. A flexible and waterproof fungicidal wall coating provides additional protection.
Car park and ramps As for a car park, it is important that it is comfortable, light and accessible. With these basics in place, car park users will be able to find their way and to experience safety. The ramps require a non-skid finish. An additional heated layer prevents slipperiness due to snow or frost. Bolidt makes it happen, whatever the season.
Important qualities
Wear resistance Foot traffic has a great impact on the flooring. From both a functional and an aesthetic point of view, it is essential that the floor finish can withstand such stress. Damages make the floor look unattractive and hinder proper cleaning. Dirt can easily settle in scratches, gaps and rough patches and leads to reduced hygiene. In the field of wear resistance, Bolidt has proven itself for more than 45 years. Seamless flooring is not only applied in the pharmaceutical industry, but also in the food industry. These are sectors in which stress loads are the highest. The seamless construction and the high quality of all ingredients guarantee a long life.
Hygiene The floor plays an essential part in ensuring good hygiene; this literally forms the basis. The seamless systems of Bolidt make it impossible for bacterial germs to multiply. This is due to a seamless and pore-free surface without awkward edges, cracks and corners. As a result, dirt cannot settle in the surface, which at the same time is resistant to disinfectants, chemicals and cleaning products. The scratch and wear resistance prevent damages that could attract bacteria and viruses. In addition, Bolidt offers special applications to provide additional hygiene. An example is coved skirting that seamlessly connects the floor to the wall finish by means of a rounded (concave) corner. This and other details make the difference.
Electrical conductivity The flooring in various spaces within pharmaceutical production facilities has to meet requirements regarding electrical resistance. This may be to prevent delicate electronic equipment from being affected by uncontrolled discharge. Laboratories and cleanrooms also require good conductivity. Conductive flooring can minimize the risk of explosions. In areas where volatiles like powders and solvents are used or stored, electrically conductive flooring provides the desired safety. Bolidt has developed electrically conductive floor finishes specifically for these types of situations. Bolidtop Stato flooring conducts without a complicated connection to an earthing system. Static electricity is quickly eliminated or its generation is prevented by a very special, conductive lower layer that is in direct contact with the structural cement-bound subfloor.
Chemical resistance Organic and inorganic acids, lyes, salts, disinfectants and solvents; flooring in a pharmaceutical environment is severely tested. In addition, the floor may also be mechanically loaded. Bolidt flooring is resistant to chemicals and very intensive use. Damages do not occur and the production process can continue year after year without any problems. The chemical resistance is based on special polymers with a chemical formula and chain structure.
Flexibility Pharmaceutical production facilities undergo physical changes on a regular basis. When renovations take place, it is important that floors can be extended or repaired quickly and easily without visible or tangible traces. It is also possible that only a new appearance of the floor is desired. A flooring system that allows this to be done quickly and economically offers a major advantage in such cases. Bolidt has flooring systems that include this option. The Bolidtop flooring line consists of solventfree, quick-drying components that are sealed with a permanent, durable layer. This sealing layer can be replaced quickly and odourlessly. In this way, repairs and possible differences in colour can disappear under the new layer and a beautiful ‘new’ floor is ready for use within a short period of time. No other flooring material offers the possibility to realize such a renovation or ‘redressing’ so quickly, easily and economically.
Appearance & design Spaces derive a large part of their atmosphere and appearance from their flooring. The colour scheme, design and texture co-determine the perception of a room. This perception can have a great influence on concentration and work performance. A pharmaceutical facility houses a diversity of interiors. The production hall requires a completely different floor than the entrance area or the canteen. Bolidt’s portfolio includes a wide range of design options. Everything is possible: from taut lines to playful and from professional to personal. Almost all colours are available, plain or multi-coloured. Patterns can be created, mother-of-pearl can be added. Incorporating a print or painting in the material is possible. Light can also be part of the design. Even a 3-D effect is an option. All systems are colourfast and made up of components of the highest quality that also guarantee the intended appearance of the flooring in the longer term.

Bolicoat 50, 50 PF en 50 RF This coating system is applied directly onto concrete and offers a uniformly looking finish in almost any colour. The system is environmentally friendly due to the use of waterborne resins. It has a short setting and drying time. Bolicoat 50 RF provides a surface with a higher level of anti-slip. Bolidtop 300 This flow-applied flooring system provides a seamless, smooth and smart finish with an excellent chemical resistance. Due to its closed surface structure, the finish is optimally hygienic and dust-free. It is available in many attractive colours. This flooring is ideal for spaces, that are exposed to light to moderate mechanical loads. Bolidtop 500 and 500 RF Bolidtop 500 is a flow-applied flooring system with excellent flow properties. It is mechanically strong and offers good protection against chemicals. In addition, it is impermeable to fluids and can be well maintained due to the pore-free and smooth surface. By adding special additives to the surface, the system also remains slip resistant in wet conditions (Bolidtop 500 RF). Bolidtop 500 SAR - new This flooring system is exceptionally resistant to chemicals. A special quality is its resistance to organic solvents like acetone and methylene chloride. The system is impermeable to fluids and suitable for medium loads. Bolidtop Stato 500 This ESD-safe flooring system meets the latest electrical standards. It is suitable for medium (forklift) traffic. The addition of an optional silicon decor mixture creates a quiet and well-maintained appearance. The system is also available in a slip-resistant version (Bolidtop Stato 500 RF). Bolidtop Stato 500 SAR This ESD-safe flooring system meets the latest electrical standards and is exceptionally resistant to chemicals. A special quality is its resistance to organic solvents like acetone and methylene chloride. It is the combination of its electrically conductive properties and mentioned resistance to solvents that makes this system unique. In addition, it is impermeable to fluids and suitable for medium loads. Bolidtop 525 (Deco) This comfortable, walk-friendly floor finish creates surveyability through its matt surface and uniform colour scheme. The system is very suitable for application between machines and under conveyor belts because it is processed in liquid form and has a high filler content. Bolidtop 550 is a true industrial heavyweight with excellent chemical resistance. The system is also available in a slip-resistant version (Bolidtop 550 RF). Bolidtop 700 en 700 RF This solid and aesthetically sound floor finish system is characterized by its high impact and shock resistance. The mechanically compacted flooring has a terrazzo look and can withstand very heavy loads. The slightly antiskid surface contributes to a safe working environment. Bolidtop 700 RF is especially slip resistant and withstands high mechanical loads. Bolidtop 700 PT - new Bolidtop 700 PT is a smooth and pore-free floor finish. Boligrip 1250 This viscous-elastic synthetic wearing course is ideal for heavier (car) traffic because of its balanced layer thickness.
