INTRODUCING
IONA

On 24 May 2018 P&O Cruises proudly announced the name of their newest ship, Iona, as a celebration of the sea and our island nation. Named after the tranquil island in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland; known for its stunning landscape and epic views of the ocean. Iona is set to mirror this concept and make the sea the star. You will be able to view the everchanging coastline vistas and ports of call from many areas of the ship.

A major new entertainment hub, SkyDome, will feature an impressive roof and a pool with a retractable stage. The SkyDome offers a unique space whatever the weather. By day, the SkyDome is the perfect place for entertainment, relaxation and informal dining. By night, the SkyDome will come alive with aerial performances and immersive shows.

WELCOME And they named her Iona!
It seems only fair to start with news that P&O Cruises will name their brand new ship Iona. I think the name perfectly represents the beauty of our own home shores. As more details on the ship are revealed, it only makes me even more excited for her launch in 2020. Itineraries go on sale in September so don’t forget to register your interest with us to be the first to find out more about Iona. Stay tuned for the launch of the new P&O Cruises programme soon, too. It has been a busy few months for new cruise ships and we’re giving you the inside scoop on some of them in this edition. I was fortunate enough to sail on Seabourn Ovation and I must say, both the ship and the service on-board blew me away. Norwegian Bliss also left us impressed; could there be a new family favourite in the water? In this issue we’re also exploring some of the smaller Italian isles, talking carbs and the Colosseum in our 36 Hours in Rome feature and discovering whether you really can do Paris in a day. I hope you enjoy reading. Yours sincerely

SILVERSEA CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF LUXURY EXPEDITION CRUISING
S
ILVERSEA CELEBRATED 10
years of luxury expedition cruising with a two-day gala voyage between London and Dublin in early June. The ultra-luxury Silver Cloud departed London’s Tower Bridge to honour Silversea Expeditions’ very first voyage, which sailed under Tower Bridge for Svalbard over a decade ago. Silver Cloud, which was the first vessel in the Silversea fleet to be converted into an ice-class expedition ship in late 2017, crossed paths with the recently extended 8
and renovated Silver Spirit in Greenwich, London.
Silver Cloud’s celebratory voyage included a congratulatory video message from HSH Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco who cut the ribbon in Monte Carlo during the naming ceremony for Silversea’s first expedition ship in 2008.

“We are delighted to be celebrating this important milestone,” Silversea chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio said. “Since the launch of our expedition itineraries, we have connected people with the world’s most spectacular landscapes and cultures, and, in the process, we have fostered respect and greater care for our planet and its inhabitants. I am very proud of my team and our mission. We will continue to scout new destinations to bring innovation to the world of expedition cruising.”
July/August 2018
Viking Ocean Cruises has taken delivery of its fifth cruise ship from the Fincantieri shipyard in Alcona, Italy. The 930-passenger Viking Orion is identical to its sister ships, Viking Star, Sea, Sky and Sun and features all-balcony staterooms, multiple dining venues included in the cruise fare, two pools, and a spa with a free thermal suite that features a sauna and snow grotto. Viking Orion will sail to a wide range of destinations including the Mediterranean, Australia & New Zealand, Alaska, Asia and the South Pacific. The sixth ship in the fleet, Viking Jupiter, floated out in May and is scheduled for delivery in early 2019.

sure that it is safeguarded for marine life and the enjoyment of generations to come.
“We have been listening to guest feedback and asking our staff how we can work together to reduce, and wherever possible, remove our reliance upon single-use plastics. On-board Boudicca, for instance, we have been able to reduce the use of cling film by 32%; this is being replicated across our other ships.”
Along with plastic straws, the cruise line will also be removing plastic cutlery, single-use coffee cups, single-use plastic jam and butter containers, reducing the use of cling film and swapping plastic laundry bags with linen ones. Thomas Rennesland, Hotel Operations Director of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “As a cruise line, we make our living out of the sea. We need to do our utmost to conserve this precious environment and make
disposable plastics; to reduce the amount of plastics used operationally; and finally, to influence our supply chain in their behaviours.
“There are three key elements to the environmental measures that we are undertaking across our fleet: to reduce and – where possible – eliminate single-use

NEW SERIES OF ‘THE CRUISE’ TO BE FILMED IN AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND ASIA
T
HE SIXTH SERIES of the
popular ITV documentary ‘The Cruise’ is to be filmed later this year and will air on our TV screens in early 2019. Filming will take place on Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess from August to November in Australia and New Zealand. Destinations will include Sydney, Melbourne, Wellington, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. The new six-part series will continue to show viewers an
insight into life on-board for both guests and the ship’s crew, with the return of some familiar crew members as well as several new faces. Tony Roberts, Princess Cruises’ vice president UK and Europe, said: “‘The Cruise’ continues to go from strength-to-strength, with viewing figures higher than ever, so we are delighted to have ITV back on board. The programme has unquestionably opened up the appeal of a cruise holiday to a whole new
audience and we look forward to seeing Princess Cruises set sail on the small screen again from early 2019. “Majestic Princess is the perfect setting for the next series as it’s our newest ship and includes a wealth of features and amenities such as fine dining, a luxury spa, an indoor garden and a 900-seat theatre. Meanwhile, Australia, New Zealand and Asia are on many bucket lists so we can’t wait to help transport viewers to these stunning parts of the world.”
MSC Cruises christened new ship MSC Seaview in Genoa, Italy, with Hollywood icon Sophia Loren returning as Godmother and cutting the ribbon on her 13th MSC ship.
The christening ceremony was hosted by Italian TV hosts Michelle Hunziker and Lorella Cuccarini, with festivities featuring children’s choir Piccolo Coro Dell’Antoniano and opera singer Matteo Bocelli, son of Andrea. MSC Group founder, chairman and ship owner Gianluigi Aponte, as well as MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Pierfranceso Vago and other executives also attended the ceremony. MSC Seaview began her maiden voyage on June 10, and will sail from six Mediterranean ports - Genoa, Marseille, Barcelona, Naples, Messina (Sicily) and Valletta.

AVING SPENT OVER four
decades in the travel industry, the majority of which have been dedicated to cruise, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have enjoyed many trips on a wide variety of ships since. Starting right back in 1979, when I stepped aboard Canberra for a travel agent’s educational visit around the Canaries, my family and I have cruised with Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean to name just a few. More recently, I had the unique chance to be part of the naming ceremonies of Seabourn Odyssey, Sojourn and Quest, all fabulous occasions, and a great chance for me to see and experience this amazing product for the first time. It was these events that led me to take several family holidays with Seabourn, who have undoubtedly become a firm favourite of mine. It’s difficult to put my finger on what makes Seabourn different; all cruise lines use the adjectives such as luxury, but Seabourn just get everything right! On her first cruise on Seabourn Odyssey, my daughter of 16 said, “it’s not as glitzy as I had expected, it’s understated luxury,” and I think that defines what I like about Seabourn. It is certainly the height of luxury, but it is not too overwhelming and the passengers seem to fit perfectly into this environment.
The magnificent staircase on
Returning from a holiday in March around the Caribbean on Seabourn Odyssey, I found an invitation to join Seabourn Ovation on a pre-season sailing from the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa to Venice. This short cruise, known as a shakedown cruise in the trade, is a chance to run the ship in test mode prior to starting her formal schedule. For me it was a perfect opportunity to see the latest enlarged concept in the cruise line’s award-winning and highly-acclaimed fleet of Odyssey-class ships. With a passenger capacity of 600, compared to 450 elsewhere in the fleet, I was rather worried that a further 150 passengers might just spoil the perfect balance, so here was the ideal opportunity to find out! Michael and wife Vicky as they sail away from Genoa
Landing on the rather short runway at Genoa, you could see Ovation gleaming in the shipyard, right next to the airport, and within no time we were driving through the gates and onto the boarding area. It was hectic with last-minute

preparations, but amidst what was clearly organised chaos, Ovation stood proud and I must say, amazing! There is something rather special about seeing a brand-new ship for the first time. Our accommodation for the next six days was a Veranda Suite, located midships on deck 8. As you would expect, the suite was generous with an ample balcony, sitting area, walk-in closet, all marble bathroom and Molton Brown toiletries. The most noticeable difference to the earlier ships was the influence of ship designer Adam D. Tihany. The suite was modern, fresh but luxurious, with a sophisticated colour palette and beautiful fabrics. Tihany’s master touch continued to stand out as we ventured around the ship to see the Penthouse Suites, Signature Suites and, of course, the fabulous Winter Garden Suite. Exploring the remainder of Ovation, it was Tihany’s influence that really had the greatest impact on me. The perfectly balanced design and attention to detail was evident everywhere. The highlight was The Grill by Thomas Keller, with its own cocktail bar and lounge. It is one of the best designed areas I have ever seen on a ship; even before I had sampled any food, this was a sure winner for me. Another noticeable improvement was The Colonnade and its enlarged dining area. Situated at the rear, it offers a slightly more casual dining alternative with both indoor and outdoor seating. As a family we always head to The Colonnade for lunch to enjoy alfresco dining and now Ovation boasts not only a much larger outdoor area, but a second outdoor overflow area on the deck below, so finding a table outside clearly was never going to be a problem. As with all Seabourn ships, you can enjoy breakfast here, plus beautiful lunch buffets and regionally themed dinners. Seabourn are renowned for their multiaward-winning cuisine and a highlight is the main restaurant. Ovation takes the dining experience to a new level and, again, Tihany’s touch is in abundance; The Restaurant is a beautiful, light,

open space with a twist featuring modern Murano glass chandeliers. The fine dining was amazing, but it always has been and it’s clear to see why they continue to receive some of the most coveted gourmet accolades. The soufflés are to die for and each evening I sent a photo of the latest offering to my son, knowing full well he would be green with envy! My highlight dining experience was dinner in The Grill. After drinks at the superb cocktail bar mixed by a highlycompetent mixologist, we enjoyed roast chicken in thyme jus for two. Being partial to a roast dinner, this was sensational and for it to be carved at the table by a Thomas Keller Master Chef, over from America just for the shakedown and maiden cruises, was the icing on the cake. I can very highly recommended it. It is in the quality and style of service on board that Seabourn truly excels. I have been blessed over the years to sample so many products at different levels and Seabourn have my award for outstanding customer service. Other luxury lines come very close, but with crew numbering nearly as many as guests on each ship, their service philosophy underlies every aspect of Seabourn’s shipboard experience. I mentioned earlier about what makes Seabourn different and quality and style of service is undoubtedly at the core.
Caviar in the surf
On Seabourn Ovation, the new team - together for just a very short time - were performing as if they had been together for years. This achievement alone is a testament to the exceptional management behind the scenes.
The Restaurant
And so, to go back to my earlier question; would a further 150 passengers spoil a product I have come to love? Well, I think my enthusiasm and comments already answer this. There is certainly much more space provided by the extra deck and width, and I am in no doubt that the additional passengers will simply blend in unnoticed. However, the extra facilities can only enhance what is already one of the most amazing cruise experiences available today.

HEN THE CROWDS are heading
for nearby Capri, those in the know spend sultry summer days on this little island that cocoons everything from rejuvenating hot springs to fabulous beaches inside its coastline. Ischia has avoided a tourist takeover and managed to retain its authentic Italian charm, regardless of whether you’re wandering the towns of the north or the fishing villages of the south. The beaches are peaceful, unruly bougainvillea spills over the town’s rugged white walls and pavement lunches last long into the 24

afternoon, caprese salads made with milky mozzarella and bulbous red tomatoes. Ischia was a little-known island until the 1950s, when Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were spotted smooching in the Tyrrhenian Sea. While the star couple put Ischia on the map, it still lacks the crowds. For such a small island, it covers all bases in terms of scenery. The hillsides of Monte Epomeo still feel wonderfully wild, scented with rosemary and pine. The spa towns of Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte and Lacco Ameno attract most visitors to
the north coast, while the south still feels like a local secret, all kids’ kickabouts on the beach and boats with peeling paint draped in fishing nets. Just across the water, midday bakes mysterious Castello Aragonese in hot Italian sun, while inside its 15th-century walls offer shade that makes the walk across from the mainland worthwhile. Next time a cruise takes you to Naples, skip the queues for the ferry to Capri and get to know your new favourite Campanian isle instead.

crystalline waters are as good as any you will find in the Caribbean; little wonder then that the rich and famous head here for their European escapes. When VIPs who can holiday anywhere in the world choose to holiday here, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Beyoncé, you know it must be good. With haute couture replacing souvenir shops, Olbia is Italy’s high-end haven with extra sand. Like all the best Mediterranean enclaves, Olbia’s interior is blanketed in emerald shrubbery and terracotta rooftops. Greek, Roman and Carthaginian rulers have shaped the city, intriguing remnants of their time here left behind at the Museo Archeologica, set on its own tiny island
in Olbia’s harbour. Venture into the countryside and glitzy coastal towns are replaced with rustic villages where local market traders deal in wine and cheese, both of which are best enjoyed on a picnic in amongst the mountain scenery. While there is oh-so-much to keep you here on the island, Olbia is the ideal base for nipping into the Maddalena archipelago. Made up of seven main islands and tens of islets, the smattering of islands is home to gorgeous beaches like the famous pastel-pink Spiaggia Rossa Beach. Pick your paradise, take a dip in the water, then with hair still damp and skin salty, hide away from the midday sun in a waterside trattoria to sample the Sardinian cuisine.

F THE AMALFI Coast is a treasure trove
of jewel-hued stucco towns, Ravello is its hidden gem. Sitting pretty, snuggled into the clifftops of the Neapolitan Riviera, it delivers vertiginous views that steal away your breath. Follow the snaking, traffic-free pathways that climb through town until you reach the gardens of Villa Cimbrone. Those stop-you-in-your-tracks views charmed DH Lawrence back in 1927, when the writer holed himself away here to pen Lady Chatterley’s Lover. There must be something in the air in Ravello that inspires the bohemian; German composer Richard Wagner finally completed the second act of Parsifal at nearby Villa Rufolo, the views from its gardens enough to push him past a two-year bout of creative block.

PONZA
Focaccia
Somewhere between Naples and Rome are the Pontine Islands, mere flecks of rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
O
F THE SIX rocky outcrops,
Ponza is the largest but it has managed to fly under-the-radar for decades, hanging on to a retro appeal that has attracted everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Beyoncé. It isn’t the glitz and glamour that attracts the A-listers but rather the simple pleasures. Days spent dipping in and out of yellow stone coves in wooden gozzo boats, plunging into turquoise waters and refuelling with olive-studded focaccia don’t need a superstar budget. Look beyond the yachts gleaming in the harbour and you’ll see why the Romans are so keen to keep this little island paradise to themselves. There are no airs and graces hidden away on this low-key locale. There are but a handful of taxis here and a building ban dating back to 1967 means no high-rise, high-end resorts scattered over the skyline either. Sure, the stars might
stop by, but Ponza has them under its spell within minutes and before they know it they are eating, drinking and sunbathing just like the locals. The blue and green waters around Ponza look better in person than they do on pictures. Clear and deep, the sea here is perfect for divers, the seabed scattered with shipwrecks and volcanic rock formations home to countless weird and wonderful sea creatures. Once you’ve dried off, make yourself comfortable at one of Michelin-starred Acqua Pazza’s port-side tables to sample its signature fish poached in a rich tomato sauce. You’ll find the dish that gave Acqua Pazza its name across Italy now but this is where it all began. Ponza has a long history as a place of exile and you’ll struggle to find a more picturesque place to be cast away.

HARING A SPOT in the Pontine
Islands is Palmarola, a craggy uncut jewel that cradles coral beaches and sea stacks along its coastline. There’s barely a thing to be found on this all-but-uninhabited island paradise, aside from a couple of restaurants close enough to the sea to dine with your feet in the sand, but therein lies its charm. The island feels so remote that it’s hard to believe Rome is so close by and that a resourceful Roman hasn’t yet capitalised on the island’s obvious appeal.
rock tunnels that lead to hidden grottos. Elsewhere in Punta Tramontana, they merely laze back on wooden boats and gaze up at the three mystical gargantuan arches known as La Cattedrale. Nearby, the ruins of a medieval monastery provide something to explore later, when the sun is at its strongest and you are seeking shade.
The island feels so remote that it’s hard to believe Rome is so close
If you like your Italian isles still beautifully rugged and raw, Palmarola will be an itinerary highlight.
There’s a primitive feeling to Palmarola, with no roads or souvenir shops in sight, just dusty pathways and grottos still bearing the markings of cavemen who called the island home long before the pirates started stopping by. The same waters once frequented by pirates are now scattered with snorkelers and scuba divers instead. In Cala Brigantina, those feeling especially brave take a deep breath and disappear into

Norwegian Bliss is cruising past the finish line in the race to become one of the hottest family ships at sea.

decks up, go-karts careering around the deck-top twists of Norwegian Bliss. Did we mention we’re in the middle of the North Sea? Norwegian Cruise Line are known to bring the fun and they have outdone themselves with the latest addition to the action-packed fleet. In fact, one of the first race tracks at sea is but the beginning of its family-tempting features.
For starters, there’s the space-themed laser tag course, an Area 51-style haunt complete with incubated aliens and a techno soundtrack that promises to get the adrenaline pumping when the lights go down and the lasers come on. There are the blue waterslides that snake above the pool deck, their insides lit with pulsing neon lights, save for a single see-through section that loops 11ft over the edge of the ship. A giant yellow bucket hangs tentatively above the Kids’ Aqua Park, anticipation building as it fills with the water that’ll drench anyone in its path. Ocean Place on Norwegian Bliss

FEATURE
There are no children joining us on this inaugural sailing from Bremerhaven but still you can almost hear their excited screams every time the bucket tips. The sugar highs that will fuel hours of these activities come courtesy of Coco’s, a new-to-Norwegian venue serving up tankards with rims thick with melted chocolate, the ‘Mad Milk Shakes’ inside laden with dark chocolate gelato, Oreo cookies and caramel butterscotch. The thought alone is enough to make a dentist whimper and that’s without mention of the jelly gummy bears scattered on top. To say it is fuelled on freakshakes and fun, Norwegian Bliss is surprisingly chic. If ever there was a ship designed to cater to multiple generations of the same family this is it. While tots are splashing their way around the Aqua Park with Dad and teens are tearing up the race track with new best friends, Mum can be chillaxing in the Snow Room while Nan kicks back with a book on a velvet chaise lounge in the Observation Lounge. Norwegian Bliss may look like just another megaship but there’s more to it than meets the eye. There’s nothing brash about her interiors for one. Instead, there’s an abundance of ivory leather, polished teak and brushed navy velvet. Metallics lend a high-end edge to everything from scatter cushions to coffee tables, while mood lighting makes for dining rooms that wouldn’t feel out of place in London’s most exclusive haunts.
to all eras. When it comes to laidback lunches between dips in the pool, variety really is the spice of life at the Garden Café, perhaps the best shipboard buffet we have ever eaten at. The choice and quality is incredible, from tiger prawns that left little room for anything else on your dinner plate and chargrilled tuna steaks topped with sweet mango relish to wooden boards piled with sundried tomatoes and charcuterie, prosciutto-topped stonebaked pizzas and shards of pistachio-studded chocolate bark. It’s 'quite the spread', to quote our mother at a buffet, and even our roomiest cruise trousers were feeling the strain.

Manhattan Room
Speaking of dining, there are more places to eat on board than on any other ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, each one with its own personality. Q is straight out of Americana, complete with frat-party style red cups and lighting reworked from old cart wheels. The District Brewhouse is the obvious place to end your All-American evening with cocktails and craft beers once the live country and western music has rounded off a meal of meaty platters in Q. Cagney’s Steakhouse has always been a fleet favourite and those steaks have never tasted better than they do at The Waterfront. Los Lobos, La Cucina and new seafood spot, Ocean Blue, are also amongst the 13 restaurants and bars available al fresco. Complimentary dining is equally indulgent, every dish delicious and the service faultless. In the Manhattan Room, evenings start with dinner and end with dancing, another nod to NCL’s determination to appeal 38

Pool Deck, Norwegian Bliss
The entertainment on Norwegian Bliss is as diverse as the dining. The music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons rang out in West End hit Jersey Boys, while the silent disco saw dad dancing galore to 70s, 80s and 90s classics. NCL’s deck-top parties are famously lively, as you might expect from a cruise line that counts ‘Mr Worldwide’ Pitbull as godfather to one of its ships. The man himself would be proud of the Cuban beats that echoed around the pool deck at the Caliente party held while we were on-board, unseasonably balmy temperatures in the North Sea only adding to the atmosphere. There are various themed nights on the agenda for guests, including Nashville Nights & Light, a deck-top hoedown that’ll see you kicking up your cowboy booted heels until the wee hours. Having broken records as the largest passenger ship ever to transit the Panama Canal, Norwegian Bliss is now sailing an inaugural season from its Seattle homeport. Having been so well designed to appeal to multi-generational travellers, the ship will undoubtedly come into its own in Alaska and the Caribbean. Alaska’s landscapes have never looked better than they will through the vast windows of the Observation Lounge or from some of the biggest stateroom balconies we’ve seen on a ship. And as for those already legendary deck-top parties, well the only thing that could have made ours better was a Caribbean backdrop and Norwegian Bliss will have one of those soon enough.

WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE
Is it really worth going to Paris for four hours? That’s the question we asked ourselves when it came to choosing how we’d spend the day when Celebrity Silhouette arrived in Le Havre on a short break. In the end, we decided that Paris is always a good idea. But were we right?

AVING SPENT THE evening
before raising a toast to Celebrity Silhouette’s arrival in Southampton for a summer of sailings, and raising eyebrows with our plans for a jaunt to Paris in record speed, we awoke to a rainy Le Havre and wondered whether we may well have made the wrong choice. Should we have shunned the 2½ hour coach trip through the French countryside to Paris and shopped up a storm at Le Havre’s Docks Vauban shopping centre instead? Everybody knows that Zara is even better abroad. Alas, we were here not to give our summer wardrobes some attention but in
the name of research, so we had a hearty breakfast, filled our takeaway coffee cups and headed for the coach. Whether you opt for an excursion or risk going it alone, there is no getting around the distance from Le Havre to Paris. The train takes around the same time as the coach transfer and it’s worth bearing in mind the tendency of our continental counterparts to take a typically laissezfaire approach to timekeeping. Our decision to visit Paris via a Celebrity Cruises excursion was reinforced as the right one as soon as we spotted signs declaring a train strike in France that day.
After a comfortable if uneventful drive, an impulsive scream of excitement when the Eiffel Tower first came into view spelled the end for any doubt over whether we had made the right decision to go into the city for such a short time. Paris is magic. We were under the city’s spell before the coach had come to a standstill and even the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits. And boy, did it rain. Only in Paris does a sea of rainbow umbrellas look like art and a couple sheltering from the storm look like a scene from an Audrey Hepburn movie.
Paris is magic. We were under the city’s spell before the coach had come to a standstill
Newlyweds on the carousel

Notre-Dame de Paris
With our clocks set to be back on the coach for 3.45pm, we threw ourselves into Paris with wild abandon. We crouched and contorted to try and snap the perfect Eiffel Tower selfie, and ran up the steps to the Trocadero to see the city at our feet. We thought the newlyweds on the carousel under the cherry blossoms must be there for the photographs, only to realise it was just the two of them, no photographer or wedding party in sight. Her veil in the wind and his chivalrous dedication to keeping her dress from the wet floor was enough to inspire the incurable romantic in even the most pragmatic passer-by. www.bolsovercruiseclub.com|Into The Blue

The Louvre
Trying to negotiate the Metro threw our rose-tinted glasses out of place, an amateur grasp of French hardly helping the situation. Conscious that we only had a few hours, we were keen to tick the big attractions off our list including Notre-Dame, the Hotel De Ville and the Louvre. We’d need time to sample some French specialities too, so a bistro stop had to figure in there somewhere. We decided to start at Notre-Dame and work our way back to the coach. It’s walkable in under an hour and there are hop-on-hop-off river cruises galore if you’d rather save your feet between the sights. We chose to jump on the Metro (a bargain at €1.80 a trip), taking Line 9 from Trocadero, changing to Line 4 at Strasbourg-St-Denis and getting off at Cité, just around

Cité at dusk
the corner from the Hunchback’s humble abode. We didn’t have time to climb the tower and join the gargoyles that loomed above but Notre-Dame managed to look rather majestic indeed in the rain. After catching sight of the beautiful wisteria-covered Au Vieux Paris, just across from the cathedral, we sheltered from the rain with a croque-monsieur et frites in a typically French bistro. As is often the case in France, it was as cheap to drink wine as it was fizzy pop so who are we to argue?
Au Vieux Paris
Feeling full and with the rain having finally relented, we crossed the Seine to leave the Île de la Cité behind and visited the Hotel De Ville, the neo-renaissance centre of political Paris. The Louvre was next on our list and our amble along the river in the museum’s direction introduced us to Paris’ bouquinistes, second-hand booksellers who continue to do business from boxes on the banks of the Seine as their predecessors have been doing since the 1500s. If you’re looking for a souvenir of your time in the French capital, we recommend snubbing the tacky souvenir shops and treating yourself to a vintage poster or antique book from their Aladdin’s Cave of treasures instead.
The Louvre and the regal surroundings of the Palais Royal Mes Du Louvre lived up to our expectations

time spent analysing the Metro map put paid to our hopes of seeing the Mona Lisa. As if we needed any more reasons to come back to Paris. After a five-minute Metro ride, we made it to the Jardins Du Trocadero with just enough time to tick ‘eat a crepe under the Eiffel Tower’ off our bucket lists. Now, in the spirit of full disclosure we have to admit that you can’t see everything glorious Paris has to offer in the smidge under four hours that you’ll have on an excursion here. Instead, think of your visit as the hors d’oeuvres before a full-on feast
for the senses when you inevitably return. Would Paris be better with hours on end to explore its streets, eat its food and drink its wine? With a doubt. But in the meantime, we can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than by getting a taste of what’s to come.

Celebrity Silhouette promises a summer of sun from Southampton and she’s bringing the HP Sauce.
H
AVING CALLED SOUTHAMPTON
home since its launch and gathered a loyal following in the eight years since, Celebrity Eclipse left some pretty big shoes to fill when it departed for Dublin in April. Fortunately, Celebrity Silhouette has arrived fully stocked with the home comforts we Brits can’t live – or holiday – without. It isn’t all HP Sauce and PG Tips though; Celebrity Silhouette debuts a whole host of new features for UK cruisers to spend their summers sampling. First up, there are The Alcoves. Lending an air of Ibizan beach club exclusivity to the popular Lawn Club, these eight for-fee cabanas are a haven of relaxation with real grass beneath your feet and the best people watching of the summer. The exclusive enclaves are serviced by their own Alcove Attendants and come complete with alcohol, fresh fruit and cheese platters. Think a good old British summertime picnic, only at sea. We Brits can’t resist a barbecue when the weather hots up and al fresco dining on Celebrity Silhouette puts the role of Grill Master firmly in your hands. The Lawn Club Grill replaces the Corning Glass Show to bring open-air grilling to the ocean. Choose a table overlooking the lawn and roast your own meat and seafood under the expert guidance of a chef armed
with a collection of herbs and spices Colonel Sanders himself would be proud of. With Solstice-class favourite, Qsine, also encouraging you to play with your food, mealtimes have never been such good fun. Sitting down to lunch at The Porch, Silhouette’s second new dining spot, feels a lot like arriving for dinner at an exclusive oceanfront eatery in the Hamptons. The $30pp menu is to die for, with dishes such as Steak Tartare with Truffle, Citrus Red Snapper Ceviche, Lobster Bisque and the piece-de-resistance, The Porch’s signature Seafood Tower, which deserves its additional $5 fee and so much more. Celebrity Cruises is famous for delivering its Modern Luxury concept without taking itself too seriously, a theme Celebrity Silhouette continues with subtle little touches like the quirky art installations worth millions. The virtual caged birds courted much attention when we were on board. There’s also The Hideaway, a forest-themed sanctuary where the best seat in the house is in a wooden ‘nest’ suspended overhead. You’ll bust a move at the silent disco in space age Quasar and have your tipples topped up at Cellar Masters, a wine bar equipped with a state-ofthe-art Enomatic wine system. Unless you’re otherwise engaged appreciating the juggling mixologists at the Martini Bar. Or taking in the views from the Sky Observation Lounge, an uber-stylish space occupying the very aft of the ship on deck 14. Unlike some cruise ship nightclubs, there wasn’t a single tumbleweed in sight when we were on board, the dance floor jam packed as a DJ worked the crowd with a mix of chart hits and feelgood classics. With such a reputation for contemporary luxury, the great kids’ facilities on Celebrity Cruises ships are easily overlooked, however Celebrity Silhouette offers tons for families cruising from the UK. The kids’ clubs are amazing, there are really spacious family-friendly staterooms and carefully-planned child-friendly excursions, plus babysitting services designed to allow mum and dad to enjoy a couple of holiday cocktails in peace. Get your order in early
Rebecca enjoying the larger than life Lawn Club
for a Celebrity VIP Pass and you’ll find the kids endlessly entertained with slumber parties, themed events and Lido Deck dinners. They’ll even get a goodie bag, plus the chance to have a nosy behind-thescenes on a ship tour. What kid doesn’t like going where they aren’t supposed to be? Celebrity Silhouette’s maiden season from Southampton is well underway, leaving airport hassle in her wake as she whisks British holidaymakers away to destinations including the Norwegian Fjords, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean. 36 HOURS IN R
OME’S HIGH-SUMMER HUMIDITY
is laced with an air of importance. There’s a ‘we were here first’ arrogance lingering around those centuries-old ruins and the monuments built in tribute to Greek gods and great emperors. Italy’s capital feels as commanding and powerful as you’d expect from the one-time centre of the world. Its ancient 70

landmarks stand proud, glared upon by gargantuan marble gods with torsos rippling and power in their poses. To travel here is to travel back in time. Because where else can you walk in the footsteps of gladiators or stand on the very spot where the Roman Empire began? It isn’t all ancient history. Rome is chic shopping streets too, clattering with the
kitten heels of raven-haired belladonnas. It’s pavement bars busy with a caffeinated lunchtime crowd of sharp-suited gents as suave as Greek gods. Rome is violinists playing as Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s angels watch on in the shadow of the Castel Sant’Angelo and it is animated discussions over an Aperol Spritz and aperitivo. Rome wasn’t built in a day but you can fall in love with it in 36 hours.

DON’T MISS….
Y
OU CAN’T VISIT Rome without getting
acquainted with its ancient icons. From the atmospheric and imposing Pantheon, so impressive it prompted Michelangelo to remark that it was ‘built by angels, not by men’, to the Colosseum, an arena of menace where memories of bloodthirsty crowds awaiting a thumbsdown to seal the fate of a wounded gladiator seep from the walls. Seeing the maze of dungeonesque corridors and looking down on the steps gladiators would emerge from to do battle really brings home the barbarity of the amphitheatre’s history. Six million people visit the Colosseum each year but while the queues are long, they move quickly. Book a tour with Coopculture (www. coopculture.it) if you want to skip them and be one of the few granted access to the Colosseum’s very top tier. Alternatively, address boyhood fantasies of doing battle and enrol at the Gladiator School of Rome (www.viator.com). Located just down the road from the Colosseum, the experience makes for a great dad and lad afternoon. It’s a couple of years since the Trevi Fountain cast off the scaffolding that had shrouded it during lengthy restorations by fashion house Fendi and it is looking better than ever. Get there before 9am and not only will you miss the crowds, you might also see workers sweeping the fountain floor of the thousands of Euros thrown in there by tourists every day; one for a return to Rome, two to find love and three for a wedding. The coins are donated to various charities but once-upon-a-time a large chunk of them filled the pockets of local rascal Roberto Cercelletta, or D’Artgnan, who made his clandestine fortune fishing them from the fountain for more than 40 years. Whatever time you visit the landmark, keep an eye out for the huge jar that stands alone on its right-hand side, put there by architect Nicola Salvi to block the view of a barber who complained about the mess outside his nearby barbershop during construction. With a night in Rome, you can see the 72

major sights in a different light, literally, on a tour of the city under the cloak of darkness. Viator’s Panoramic Rome by Night Walking Tour (www.viator.com) starts by showing you the sunset over the Eternal City’s red rooftops from Pincio Terrace, before wandering down the Spanish Steps – a landmark that isn’t unmissable if you’re short on time otherwise – followed by the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona with Bernini’s Four Rivers Fountain, and finally the Campo de’Fiori. Once famous for its executions, the square is now better known for its daily morning markets and nightlife that attracts only the coolest Romans. It is a hive of activity come evening with plenty of places to round off your night tour with dinner and drinks. If you’re here for the history, and of course you are, don’t forget to visit the Ara Pacis, an almighty monument dedicated to Pax, the Roman goddess of peace. See how shopaholic tendencies were catered for in 100AD at Trajan’s Market, believed to be the first covered shopping centre in history, and walk amongst the red-brick ruins of the Baths of Caracalla on ancient Appian Way, Europe’s first great highway. Finally, cross the oldest bridge in Rome to one of the world’s smallest inhabited islands, Isola Tiberina or Tiber Island. There’s a mythical quality to this 3rd-century slice of land in the River Tiber, where Rome’s residents would travel to have their ailments cured by the waters of an ancient well in the Basilica of St Bartholomew.
If the summer heat gets stifling, escape to the park where Romans go to relax. Villa Pamphili (Via di S. Pancrazio) falls just off most tourist maps but it is only a short stroll from Trastevere. The country house is surrounded by manicured grounds fragranced with lemon trees and jasmine, a secret garden away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

HE TRAM TRACKS Tour (www.
rometramtracks.com) takes the party on the road in a vintage tram that rolls through the streets of Rome in a haze of old-school classics. The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones are joined by Italian classics and Rat Pack favourites on a set list that sees you all the way from Porto Maggiore to the Basilica di San Giovanni, Terme di Caracalla and right the way to the Colosseum. With authentic Roman nibbles and unlimited free wine, it promises to combine sightseeing with getting squiffy and who doesn’t love the idea of that? No city worth its salt is without a standout rooftop bar and The Terrace at Hotel Raphael (www.raphaelhotel.com) is Rome’s. The restaurant is known for its experimental cuisine, including some of the best vegetarian food in town, but if you’re on a budget you can skip the swish dinner and order a bottle of Prosecco to toast the Eternal City by moonlight. If pizza and pasta draw your attention away from the rooftop views, save yourself for tomorrow morning and redeem the calories with a climb up the 551 steps to the dome or ‘cupola’ of St Peter’s Basilica. If you’d rather save your legs, you can pay an extra 2 euros and take the lift part way up, climbing the last 320 steps. Be prepared; Vatican City is cash-only and you’ll be hugely disappointed if you queue to get inside St Peter’s Basilica only to find you don’t have the cash for entry to the cupola. Set some change aside to send a postcard home from the Vatican City Post Office too. The Terrace at Hotel Raphael

RASTEVERE IS ONE of Rome’s most
charming, rustic neighbourhoods in which to wander aimlessly. You’ll undoubtedly get lost, jaunty streets all seeming to spill into the same bucolic courtyards, but that’s all part of the district’s appeal. Best of all, hidden away in the nooks and crannies of the burnt ochre buildings are some of the best restaurants in Rome, all of them little to look at but totally delicious.
Da Enzo restaurant
The real Roman cuisine at Da Enzo (Via dei Vascellari, 29) ranks amongst the best in the whole city and while plenty of eateries around these parts look like authentic trattorias, this really is one. The house wine is so good even the locals will happily quaff it, the Jewish-style fried artichokes are a revelation and the al dente rigatoni all’amatriciana dusted in a sprinkling of pecorino is to die for. Save space for the family-recipe tiramisu too. Snaring a dinner reservation here is no mean feat so don’t be surprised if you have to settle for lunch here, the beauty of which is that you’ll have plenty of time to walk off those carbs in Villa Farnesina
Tiramisu
nearby Villa Farnesina. One of Rome’s grandest Renaissance villas, this off-thebeaten-path treasure has frescoes by the great Raphael and other Italian masters hidden within its walls. Even better, entry is only 5 euros. For a souvenir everyone back home will appreciate far more than a fridge magnet, it has to be a blue and white bag of cookies from Innocenti (Via della Luce, 21). This
Carbonara at Da Enzo
unassuming little cookie shop doesn’t look like much with its blue window frames and retro melamine counters, but that enormous oven has been baking the best biscotti in Rome since the 1950s. If you can get those cookies home without ending up with an empty bag of crumbs you’ll have done a better job than we did. When night falls and your feet are tired, treat yourself to dinner at high-profile Pierluigi (Piazza de Ricci, 14), where Barack Obama and countless other heads of state have been hosted over platefuls of the finest seafood in the city.

Of special note are two Silver Discoverer cruises that depart in summer 2019 for Borneo's Camp Leakey – a renowned refuge for orangutans, to which the cruise company enjoys exclusive access and has made various donations to support the protection and research of the primates.
