ITH AWARDS SEASON well underway,
I start with news of some big wins for Bolsover Cruise Club. We were thrilled to receive the accolade of both Best Cruise Travel Agency and Best Online Cruise Agency at the British Cruise Awards. Unlike many industry awards, these are voted for by the public, something which makes our wins even more special. I’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who voted for us. We were also very proud to see one of our Cruise Experts, Poppy Outram recognised at the TTG Travel Awards, where she scooped the awards for Cruise Agent of the Year and Top Agent of the Year. Well done Poppy! This edition of Into The Blue sees us visit destinations far and wide. We’re sharing four ways to explore Asia in 2019, perfect if you’ve always fancied a little Thai island hopping but aren’t enamoured by thoughts of going it alone, backpack and all. We’re also taking a closer look at Nordfjord, where Iona will sail what is shaping up to be the most popular inaugural season ever for a P&O Cruises ship. We talk adventure with Hurtigruten ambassador Dave Cornthwaite and discover the destinations set to be top of everyone’s wish list for the year ahead. We’re also spending 36 hours in Valletta. The phrase ‘hidden gem’ is often overused but there really is no better way to describe the tiny Maltese capital that has quickly become one of our favourite Mediterranean ports of call. I hope you enjoy reading.
Yours sincerely

CELEBRITY APEX TO DEBUT IN SOUTHAMPTON
C
Into The Blue|Call us on: 01246 819 819
ELEBRITY CRUISES HAS announced
that Celebrity Apex will launch in the UK and sail several voyages out of Southampton during its first season in April 2020. Celebrity Apex is the second in Celebrity’s Edge class and will be almost identical to sister ship Celebrity Edge with features to include Edge Villas with outdoor plunge pools. When Celebrity Apex launches, it will be the
first time Celebrity has operated two ships out of Southampton, with Celebrity Silhouette returning to the UK for her third consecutive year. Celebrity’s president Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said: “This is the first time that we’ve had a christened ship in the UK since Eclipse. In 2010 Celebrity Eclipse changed the face of UK cruising with our
modern luxury approach. Celebrity Apex will continue our tradition of reimagining what is expected from all aspects of a holiday at sea and elevate modern luxury cruising in ways never seen before.”
Apex’s itineraries will go on sale on 29 November 2018. To be the first to find out more about Apex visit www.bolsovercruiseclub. com/celebrity-apex.
SAGA TO NAME NEW SHIP IN DOVER
T
HE NAMING CEREMONY
of Saga’s first new-build ship Spirit of Discovery, will be held at the Port of Dover on 5 July, 2019 “As the place that Saga’s first cruise ship set sail from more than 20 years ago, Dover was the natural choice”, revealed Chief Operating Officer Nigel Blanks.
“With Saga’s Group headquarters based in Kent, we felt it only right that we name our first brand new, purpose-built cruise ship in Kent and what better way to do that than with the iconic White Cliffs of Dover as a backdrop. Spirit of Discovery will be the first cruise ship to be named in the port for more than a decade and the first following the regeneration
of the Western Docks. We are already planning a few surprises, and will no doubt add a few more before next year, so save the date, as we christen the first of our new-build fleet”, Blanks added. Spirit of Discovery’s maiden voyage, A British First, will sail from Dover on 10 July 2019. The 999-guest luxury boutique ship will circumnavigate the British Isles.
CRYSTAL CRUISES REVEALS FIRST LOOK AT ‘DIAMONDCLASS’ SHIPS Crystal Cruises has shared exterior images of their new ‘Diamond-class’ ships, with the first ship set to join the fleet in 2022. The luxury ships will measure approximately 67,000 gross tons and accommodate approximately 800 guests, boasting luxury design elements and exceptional amenities in line with Crystal Cruises’ award-winning fleet. The ‘Diamond-class’ ships will be built at MV Werften shipyard in Stralsund, Germany.

THE When Celebrity Edge launches later this month, it will be headline venues like Eden and the Magic Carpet that catch our eye. But peel back the layers of the first new Celebrity Cruises ship in six years and you’ll discover it is as innovative as it is attractive.
W
HEN WE ARRIVED at the
Sun deck on Celebrity Edge
Chantiers d’Atlantique shipyard on the north-western coast of France on a mid-September morning, Celebrity Edge was standing proud against grey skies, having sailed through her first sea trials. From outside, the first Edge-class ship looked good to go but the hard hats and goggles we had been issued suggested otherwise. According to Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, the $1billion ship was 95.6% complete. However, on a project of this size, that last 4 or so

percent isn’t just a matter of shipping in the crockery and touching up the paintwork. Inside Edge’s gleaming navy exterior, hundreds of workmen and women – more women than Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, says she has ever seen on a build before – are working frantically to get the ship launch-ready. Yet see past the scaffolding and the dust sheets and it is already glaringly obvious that Celebrity Edge is going to be a gamechanger, not just for Celebrity Cruises but for the industry as a whole.
Rooftop Garden on Celebrity Edge
Villa on Celebrity Edge
Celebrity Edge, Chantiers d’Atlantique shipyard
Celebrity Edge is the first ship designed entirely in 3D, traditional shipbuilding concepts left behind in favour of new thought processes borne from a determination to bring something totally new to the seas. The use of 3D renderings in shipbuilding isn’t especially new but in Edge it is unprecedented, allowing its creators to totally rethink the traditional structure of a cruise ship. By shifting from a standard exoskeleton design, which effectively requires the sides of a ship to be closed off, and replacing it with a cutting-edge endoskeleton that moves the spine of the ship to its centre, Edge’s designers have created a vessel that feels twice its size. Every new ship promises panoramic views but few have ever delivered it quite like this, all uninterrupted floor-to-ceiling windows, walls of glass and those revolutionary ‘infinite veranda’ staterooms capable of impressing, even with a building site backdrop. Edge’s two-storey villas weren’t quite ready for their close-up in time for the preview, but we were told that they are everything designers envisioned they would be and more. Celebrity Edge was never intended to be one of the biggest ships at sea but painstaking attention-to-detail has gone into making sure she feels like it in terms of space. Ramps replace stairs in Eden to create a seamless transition between levels and balconies are minus handrails for uninterrupted views. The serene venue is cocooned at the aft of the ship, ensconced in a huge glass

wall that at almost 7,000sq.ft is one of the largest of its kind at sea. Nothing happens by accident on a ship of this size and expense, and Lisa Lutoff-Perlo explained that this expanse of glass alone required hours upon hours of consideration and consultation to determine how its size and positioning would affect the noise and movement of the ship. It isn’t just a lot of thought that goes into creating light and lofty spaces like Eden but a lot of money too, including a substantial sum just to make the gap between decks larger and in turn the ceilings higher. Even areas that might feel a little like a means to an end on other ships feel anything but utilitarian on Celebrity Edge, thanks to the extra space and careful use of lighting. Only 15-20% of the ports on her itineraries will require tenders but when you do board the state-of-the-art, custom designed boats (complete with air conditioning, flat-screen televisions and plush leather upholstery) you’ll do so in the ‘Destination Getaway’, a softly-lit spot that’s so cool it has already been earmarked for teen parties and crew get-togethers. Celebrity Edge is ground-breaking from a marine engineering and energy efficiency point of view too. While we had been too busy snapping the first shots of the ship when we arrived at the yard to notice, Richard Fain pointed out later that there is something a little different about its bow. Known as a parabolic ultrabow, another Celebrity Cruises innovation, it will use hydrodynamics to cut through the waves more smoothly and more efficiently, lowering energy consumption and helping the Edge-class ships to become 25% more energy efficient than those in the Solstice-class. Propellers have also been Cosmopolitan Restaurant

moved to the front of the vessel to reduce drag and make for a much smoother sailing. Notably, at a time when we are more conscious than ever about conserving the seas we sail, Celebrity Edge will also be the first ship to be rated for underwater noise. “It means Edge will be harder to detect on sonar but at 16 storeys above water it’s hard to miss!” said Richard Fain. Edge is the complete package, a combination of brains and beauty that has what it takes to convert even the most loyal land-based holiday lover. Our tour lingered in the Grand Plaza but even hours wouldn’t have been long enough to take in everything that is going on here. The space is the brainchild of architectural design duo Jouin Manku, and partner Sanjit Manku’s pride was palpable as he escorted us through the ship’s piece de resistance, or as he describes it ‘both the heart and the belly button’. In the Grand Plaza the duo, completed by Patrick Jouin, set about fusing ultra-modern design concepts with classic inspirations gleaned from the ocean liners that commanded the seas during the golden age of transatlantic travel. So, while there is a sweeping staircase, it is a sculptural creation that wouldn’t look out of place at The Guggenheim. And while there is a chandelier – it isn’t an atrium without one – its design is akin to an art installation, complete with 765 pipes of LED light and not a single crystal droplet in sight. Just as Celebrity Edge breaks tradition with its engineering, Jouin Manku have broken the mould with their designs, so much so that some of the most striking features blended seamlessly with the building site around them. In place of the usual

polished marble and gleaming chrome is raw plaster and exposed steelwork, the bare bones of the ship’s structure left exposed behind illuminated fabric panels on the walkways. It isn’t a reproduction either but the real deal, complete with chalked measurements and such created by the shipbuilders. Celebrity Edge is different. The first of four Edge-class ships – the second of which, Celebrity Apex, will sail from Southampton in 2020 – it takes everything we love about Celebrity’s ‘Modern Luxury’ cruising and merges it with engineering and design that is totally unique. Almost 28 million of us cruise today and new ships are launching more frequently than ever to accommodate us. Standing out is hard to do in an ocean of firsts but Celebrity Edge is set to not only move the industry forward but change it too.

MAIN DINING—INTRODUCING FOUR MAIN RESTAURANTS. With such a revolutionary ship as Celebrity Edge, Celebrity were inspired to completely rethink the main dining experience. In order to bring a new global excitement to their main restaurant, Celebrity have created not one but FOUR complimentary, main restaurants, each with a global influence that is not only represented in the cuisines they serve, but in the distinctive ambiences they offer. These main dining restaurants offer a more intimate dining experience, because they’re smaller in scale, yet offer more seating per guest than any other ship in the fleet. NO BACKPACK NECESSARY

SIA IS ONE of the most diverse regions in the world but there comes a time when throwing
a backpack over your shoulder and island hopping under your own steam just doesn’t hold quite the same appeal as it did back in the day. If you gave a gap year a miss, or want to see what has changed since you last headed East, a ship can become your home-from-home on the other side of the earth. The neons shine brighter here and the sands are whiter. The incense lingers heavier in the air and the palaces gleam golden in the heat of endless summers. There are so many ways to ‘do’ Asia. From itineraries that will inevitably introduce the kids to a lifetime of wanderlust to classic sailings beneath canvas; luxurious no-expense-spared bucketlist trips to unforgettable cities. You could even savour cruises that deliver you to the doorstep of exotic locales each day yet welcome you home with the best of British each evening. Here are four ways to experience Asia in 2019, no backpack necessary.

SOUTHEAST ASIA UNDER SAIL
S Star Clippers cuisine
TAR CLIPPERS ARE relatively new to
Thailand but there is something about these traditional tall ships, all creaking sailor’s knots and billowing cream canvas, that looks so at home amidst the paradise beaches and archipelagos of Southeast Asia. Sailing here in such a way feels like diving feet-first into a Robinson Crusoe adventure, albeit with the refined sounds of Vangelis’s 1492: Conquest of Paradise providing the opening credits.
If Thailand to you means immaculate beaches and underwater worlds, the northern islands won’t disappoint. The snorkelling is spectacular in the pristine waters of Ko Surin and Ko Kradan, while the diving in the Similian Islands is up there with the best on earth. There’s a call at Bird Island, officially known as Ko Rok Nok, and Ko Kradan, a small slip of an island where the beers taste better on the beach and Star Clippers are known to pitch up the barbecue and rustle up a feast on the sand.
Island-hopping takes on new meaning with Star Clippers, The piece de The pièce de résistance is bridging the gap between cruising resistance is Phang Nga Bay. Made famous and sailing. Phang Nga Bay
Getting from ship to island takes a jaunty ladder and a tender boat but getting your feet wet is part of the appeal. Thailand’s northern islands are stunningly beautiful, so they inevitably draw a crowd. However, when you board your full-masted sailing ship, it sort of feels like you own the place; all eyes on you and a ship that looks perfectly at home in paradise.

SEVILLE L
Alcázar
ONELY PLANET DEEMED it the
number one must-see city for 2018 and Seville’s star has never shined brighter. The Andalusian capital is often overlooked by city breakers in favour of cosmopolitan Madrid or bohemian Barcelona but while everyone’s attention has been focused elsewhere, the city has thrived on its trading roots and undergone a period of transformation that makes it irresistible. Further confirmation of Seville’s new cool kid status recently came in the form of its very own Pantone colour. Created in collaboration with gin maker Tanqueray, Pantone: orange FFAB60 is described as ‘friendly and optimistic with a touch of zest…[it] wraps you in a warm and welcoming embrace’, a description that could just as easily apply to the city as a whole. Excursions from Cadiz will showcase Seville in a day on most itineraries, though some ships are small enough to squeeze along the Guadalquivir river and dock right in the heart of the city itself. Seville sizzles at the height of summer and you’ll find yourself pulled from Gothic pillar to Moorish post on a tour of its highlights. Built by the Moors and better known by Game of Thrones fans as the Water Gardens of Dorne, the Real Alcázar is as elaborate as palaces come and is undoubtedly the jewel in Seville’s crown. There are plenty of gems scattered elsewhere too. Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, 80 chapels making up its majestic structure at the heart of the city. The cathedral was 38

destined to impress from the very start, its design committee determined to create something ‘so beautiful and so magnificent that those who see it will think we are mad’. If myth is to be believed, it is the final resting place of Christopher Columbus too. Seville’s star attraction was created for the Ibero-American Exposition World’s Fair in 1929 but the exuberant Plaza de España is far more grandiose than its purpose suggests. Its Mudejar style is as photogenic as they come (those tiles!) and the people watching can be done by boat as you pass beneath the four beautiful bridges or by bike out and about in María Luisa Park. As its fiery Pantone shade suggests, Seville is a city not shy on colour. There are its vibrant bitter oranges, hung heavy from trees groaning beneath the strain everywhere you look, but there’s colour too in the scarlet ruffles of traditional traje de flamenco outfits scattered around the city in which flamenco was founded. The dance is in Seville’s DNA and you’ll inevitably stumble upon a performance; the Museo del Baile celebrates all things flamenco with daily shows from Seville’s biggest stars. You shouldn’t need much more convincing but if you do, let your appetite lead the way; Seville has been synonymous with good food since long before it took the attention of Lonely Planet’s hot list. And this is never more obvious than in Bario Santa Cruz, the city’s old, pretty Jewish Quarter, its amber buildings hiding endless tapas joints beneath their rafters.

KOTOR
I
Historic town of Perast
a mountainous backdrop deserving of comparisons with the Norwegian fjords, mesmerizingly blue waters warmed by Mediterranean temperatures and a medieval walled town charming enough to tempt you away from the bay, this sweet little secret is set to become the word on everyone’s lips. A hidden gem in the most literal sense, this tiny town on the coast of Montenegro is tucked away in a crease of land surrounded by moody mountains that make for some pretty spectacular views if you’ve got an uphill walk in you to Lovcen National Park. Don’t worry if all that sounds too much like hard work for a holiday; the sail into the Bay of Kotor is impressive in itself and enjoying it involves nothing more strenuous than placing your order with room service and indulging in an al fresco breakfast on the balcony. St Tryphon’s Cathedral has risen from the ashes numerous times after earthquakes left it in ruins but the resulting addition of Baroque bell towers and Corinthian columns only adds to the character of the impressive catholic cathedral. Look beyond the religious and Kotor’s old military ties mean an abundance of the historic town walls we all love in any Mediterranean city. Kotor’s fortifications date back to the 9th century but were still being developed right up until the 1800s. Climb the 1,350 steps to the fortress
of St John and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views all the way up, not just at the top. It’s a hard slog, so remember your water and go hard on the Montenegrin specialities at lunch; you’ve earned it. Kotor’s compact size means it can easily be explored in a few hours, leaving you time to spare to see more of what Montenegro has to offer as well. The baroque town of Perast is pretty in itself but it is most importantly the departure point for pilgrimages by boat to a mysterious island known as Our Lady of the Rocks. The island is serene, surrounded by still waters and wrapped in mountain scenery. At its heart is the Gospa od Skrpjela, a church bathed in legend and folklore, including the tale of a woman from Kotor who embroidered with her own hair while waiting for her sailor husband to return from sea. The embroidery hangs inside the church, though it’s down to you to decide whether you believe the myth. When the sun is high and hot, and the city is busy, the opportunity to get out on the water and see the bay from a new vantage point isn’t one to be missed. Swim, kayak, paddleboard or book a catamaran tour of the coastline for a unique way to soak in those views. www.bolsovercruiseclub.com|Into The Blue

BALI W
Sacred Monkey Forest
HETHER IT IS the strange symmetry of
stacked emerald rice terraces or the sound of the azure sea lapping strips of immaculate white sand, there is something hypnotic about Bali’s ethereal beauty. The Indonesian island is no stranger to the spotlight having found itself on the tourist radar following the release of the cult classic ‘Eat, Pray, Love’. While we can’t promise your own moment of selfdiscovery, we can promise the kind of peace and serenity that can only come from such a spiritual paradise. Bali was made for beach lovers with some of the sweetest sands found anywhere in the world in Denpasar, as well as world-class diving and all the watersport your heart could desire. However, while it might be a tad controversial, we think there’s enough to do on dry land that you needn’t so much as dip a toe in the water during your time on the island. Take a tour of tropical green hillsides stacked with rice paddies and banana, cacao and coffee plantations. Make mischief with hundreds of Balinese macaques at the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud, walk into the mouth of a demon at the Goa Gajah Elephant Cave and find yourself intrigued and entranced in equal measure by traditional Balinese dance, all experiences of the exotic that feel a world away from home in the most intoxicating way. Its 10,000 temples have earned Bali the nickname ‘Island of the Gods’ and to visit without experiencing some of the idyllic temples it is famous for would be sacrilege. The Taman Ayun Temple is one of six royal temples in Bali. The ‘Garden Temple in the Water’ is beautiful, standing proud atop an offshore rock, its moat filled with lotus flowers. Bali’s thousands of temples might be its calling card but there is so much to do here that there’s little wonder it has become a hot spot for features far beyond just beaches. Cooking classes see you visit local markets, before cooking up a feast at family homes, traditional satays and curries almost always on the menu. Spas are startlingly cheap too, a Balinese massage overlooking rice paddies and palm trees beating one in your local salon back home hands down. And before you head back to the ship, it’s only right to grab a cold Bingtang beer and watch the sun set into the Indian Ocean from one of Bali’s endless sandy stretches. 40

MYKONOS
R
UMOUR ON THE street is that Mykonos is set to
become the new Santorini. The Cycladic spot has come to become known as a hedonistic hideaway, mixing up quaint Greek seafront spots with an achingly hip bar and boutique scene. Mykonos’ popularity is booming with the A-listers and where their endless budgets and taste for the high life go, we will follow. The Greek isle is on everyone’s agenda but despite the throngs heading its way, its whitewashed streets still feel deliciously authentic and can be surprisingly uncrowded, especially if your cruise calls there just outside of high season. It’s an obvious choice if you’ve already seen the curve of Santorini’s caldera and are on the lookout for new vistas to take your breath away. Mykonos is whatever you want it to be. Looking for a good time? Beach bars bedecked in driftwood deliver
cold wine and hot tunes for an Ibiza-esque vibe. Beach bums will find a different beach for every hour of the day if they so choose, all lapped by bright blue water and with the hot air of typically Mediterranean summers cooled just enough by those soft Aegean winds. Designer shopping here leaves the likes of St Tropez in the shade but sweet little leather shops run by locals are just as likely to tempt you to part with your credit card. The island’s star-studded reputation dates back to the days when Aristotle Onassis would sweep in by schooner from his nearby private island, his future wife Jackie Kennedy taking the glamour up a notch with celebrity shindigs attended by the likes of Grace Kelly, Mick Jagger and Mia Farrow. Its popularity subsided in the 90s and noughties but it is back with a bang. When an island has enough sparkle to put idyllic Santorini in the shade, you know it must be good.

SAYYES MORE
When motivational speaker, adventurer and author Dave Cornthwaite decided to ‘say yes more’, it changed his life. We caught up with him to find out how embracing adventure in both the every day and the extreme would eventually lead to him peddling a water bike 1,243 miles along the Norwegian coast, Hurtigruten’s ships keeping him company along the way.

would become one of 25 1,000-mile-ormore journeys made using a different form of non-motorised transport. The ‘pet project’ would come to be known as Expedition1000 and it would eventually bring Dave together with Hurtigruten and the Norwegian coast. Hurtigruten and Dave Cornthwaite are a match made in heaven, he the adventurer and they the expedition cruise line. Dave’s life-affirming ‘SayYesMore’ motto resonated from their first meeting almost two years ago, so when his attentions turned to peddling a water-powered Schiller bike along the ‘Hurtigruten’ route from which the cruise line got its name, it went without saying that they would be involved along the way. It would be a huge challenge, one which the captains of some Hurtigruten ships – experts in these waters – said that Dave simply could not do. But with his supplies waterproofed, Dave set off from Kirkenes in July 2017 on what he describes as one of his most difficult journeys to date.
the Norwegian route. Visiting the same towns and villages Hurtigruten’s ships have called into for more than 175 years, Dave arrived via water bike and while the vessels may differ, the warm welcome was the same. People offered him meals to eat and places to sleep, if he could tear himself away from outdoors spots with a near-constant view of the Norwegian fjords. For one night only, he traded his tent for Fordypningsrommet, the world’s most northern artist’s retreat, founded by musician Håvard Lund. Dave would later return to the cosy nook on the coast, spending a month of winter holed away writing a book about the challenging Norwegian journey.
been there for him when his spirits were flagging and Dave would go on to sail with Hurtigruten twice over the next year. “I did it the hard way the first time I did the Norwegian coast, so I definitely appreciated the comfort of seeing it by ship the second time around!” he said. “It’s a great way to get around, just getting dropped off at these little places along the coast, then going off to explore. As a holiday, it’s the one I’d choose” And that is the story of how Hurtigruten came to be the expedition cruise line with a record-breaking adventurer’s seal of approval.
On 2nd October 2017, Dave arrived in Bergen, his challenge complete and his backside rather saddle sore after bobbing around on a bike on the waves for the last two months. Their ships had MS Lofoten MS Lofoten, crew
It took 61 days to complete the Hurtigruten route by Schiller bike, sometimes with killer whales or puffins for company on fleeting moments of the 14-hour days, and sometimes with Hurtigruten’s ships, guests and crew for support too. Dave became the ‘smallest ship in the Hurtigruten fleet’ and it wasn’t unusual for his bigger fleet mates to pause mid-fjord with gestures of encouragement for one of their own. MS Lofoten cast overboard a care package in his direction, filled with snacks and clean clothes. MS Richard With went a step further, delivering a takeaway direct to Dave’s bike. But it was MS Spitsbergen and its crew that went all out, creating the world’s first waterbike drive-thru. And so it came to be that on a foggy afternoon somewhere in the Norwegian fjords, Dave found himself on the ship’s tender deck tucking into a burger and chips, plus a bottle of Coca-Cola in a champagne bucket, with the ship’s 500 guests watching on from above. When it wasn’t the guest, crew and cuisine on Hurtigruten ships keeping Dave’s spirits up, it was the locals he met along

We’re focusing on just some of the sights and sounds of some of Norway’s most popular destinations and excursions dotted along the majestic Nordfjord, which stretches 106km inland from the rugged Norwegian coast at Stad. What is it about Nordfjord that puts it top of the to-do list?

OLDEN Situated at the southern tip of Nordfjord, one of the most appealing features of Olden is the blissful tranquillity it has to offer. This wonderful Scandi village is incredibly peaceful and provides the ultimate relaxing location to sit back and enjoy the magnificence of the Fjordland over an ice cold akevitt, the potato-based national drink. Olden really is a photography lover’s paradise; however, it’s not just the captivating scenery that enthrals its guests. There many museums exhibiting all the very best the Fjordland has to offer, from the heritage of the glaciers nearby, many of which are branches of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in mainland Europe, to the fascinating local folk history. An incredibly well-respected skiing centre provides a great pull for visitors to the glacier plateau, especially for any skiers looking to admire Hornindalsvatnet, Europe’s deepest lake.
Kayak, Loen
Hornindalsvatnet The view from the Loen Skylift
LOEN Sister village to Olden, sitting just 8km away on the fjord itself, Loen’s charms match Olden’s when it comes to postcard-perfect churches and spectacular scenery. Nestled at the head of Nordfjord, and home to the dramatic Loen Skylift, Loen offers a fast and easy route to the top of Mt Hoven itself. Introduced in March 2017 and boasting a route which takes you on an incredible 1100 metres in less than 5 minutes, Hugin and Munin, as the two cable cars are known, are anything but dull.
BRIKSDAL GLACIER The amazing valley around Olden and Loen portrays an idyllic setting with the river flowing from the mountains and the Briksdal Glacier. This sensational attraction is also renowned for its impeccable waterfall scenery with giant cascades of water plummeting to sea level. This area allows for visitors to roam on foot and one of the most popular routes is to head for the Jostedal Glacier from the
valley. This is a designated national park and a truly beautiful location to explore; great for capturing that once in a lifetime photograph.

ADVENTURE AROUND EVERY CORNER Once you’re here, the methods of getting around offer an array of opportunities for excitement. Guests looking to enjoy a walking tour will love the beautiful architecture around Olden and Loen, leaving the picture-postcard villages feeling like they have taken a step back in time; however there are also more fast paced alternatives. Take it all in from water-level via a RIB boat adventure or even indulge in a kayaking experience. Exercise enthusiasts may enjoy the prospect of a Huaren Viewpoint for scintillating views or head for Briksdal Glacier and enjoy a once in a lifetime glacier rafting adventure.
Humpback whale breaching
For anyone seeking a more taxing way to achieve the breath-taking scenery of Mount Hoven and the surrounding area, Loen’s via ferrata or ‘protected climbing route’, will ensure you earn your pastries and pancakes at the mountain’s peak. In essence, a via ferrata is a steel cable attached securely to a mountainside, allowing you to take in the views of glaciers, mountains and the fjord itself, harnessed and tethered, with absolute safety. If the climb itself doesn’t get the adrenaline going, perhaps the Gjølmunnebrua suspension bridge will. Just a few hundred metres from the snow-capped tip of Mt Hoven itself and stretched 160m across a deep canyon above the fjords, this wobbly bridge is essentially built from steel cables. And whilst you’ll be harnessed and kitted up to prevent falls it’s not for the faint-hearted. But if you’re up to the challenge, this really is a tale to tell once you’re back home again.

I’m a runner and there is nothing I love more than lacing up my trainers, pulling up my compression socks and pounding the pavements. Except, that is, for holidays. I’m a big believer that time spent at sea is time well spent but can you really sail the seas without piling on the pounds? I joined Princess Cruises in Southampton to find out, running kit and all.
A
S A CRUISER and a runner with a
half marathon on the horizon, I was intrigued. Is it really possible to train, maintain a healthy diet and look after your wellbeing at sea? I’d decided to focus on four important factors, the cornerstones of staying healthy at sea if you will; sleep, training, diet and taking time out. I’d better start by mentioning that Sapphire Princess blew me away when I arrived. What a ship. The atrium elicits a ‘WOW’ as it greets you in all its glory and the ship is everything I know Princess Cruises to be: glamorous, elegant, tranquil even. I’d go so far as to say that 58

there can’t possibly be a better place to spend a Tuesday morning testing your health and fitness resolve than here. Had it been possible to swap Southampton for St Maarten it would have been perfect in every possible way. My first priority once on board was checking out the staterooms. Sleep is a huge and often overlooked factor in
maintaining both our physical and mental health. I’d heard that Princess Cruises had recently rolled out more than 44,000 luxury beds in staterooms across the fleet and I wanted to see how serene a slumber they’d offer. One word: heaven.
It was roughly three laps to each mile and it turned out to be one of the best 10k runs I had ever done, both time wise and from a relaxation point of view.

The beds have been designed by ‘The Sleep Doctor’ exclusively for Princess Cruises. Each features a plush two-inch thick pillow top, a nine-inch-deep single-sided mediumfirm mattress for enhanced support and, for less partner disturbance, individual wrapped coils. I’m sold! Not only are the beds unbelievable but Princess Cruises have also introduced a sleep programme that is synced to the TV, designed to make it even easier for you to catch the perfect sleep. The programme serves up five sleep tips, as well as sharing what to look for in a mattress for your own humble abode, plus advice on how to gain more energy. There’s also a Princess Cruises ‘MusicCure’. Did you know that the sound of the ocean is one of the only noises known to help lull you into a blissful trance at bedtime? Prescribing music like medicine, the ‘MusicCure’ programme soothes you into a restful slumber. You can also purchase a Princess Cruises sleep kit, an addition to their sensory stateroom offerings that includes eye shades, aromatherapy scents, earplugs and even the Sleep Doctor’s ‘Good Night’ app. Once convinced Princess Cruises could promise a great night’s sleep, it was time to see what the facilities are like when it comes to training, whether that means running a marathon or keeping fit at a more leisurely level. The personal trainers onboard knew their stuff and there were countless classes on offer, from spinning and Zumba to more sedate affairs like yoga. Body conditioning classes like the up-and-coming ‘Stretch and Release’ promised to stretch those aches and pains into submission without requiring you to do anything too strenuous; music to the ears of most of us on lazy days. I’m more of an outdoorsy person, so I was happy to discover plenty of places on Sapphire Princess to get out and about in the fresh air. In fact, I tested out the promenade deck to its full potential by running a 10k. Nuts, I know, but all in the name of research. It was roughly three laps to each mile and it turned out to be one of the best 10k runs I had ever done, both time wise and from a relaxation point of view. Running here is a great way to get some intensive training in but a lot of passengers were power walking and chatting their way around too, just generally

loving the feeling of being outdoors in the fresh air. There are plenty of seating areas around the deck to rest or to stretch out on a sun lounger too. Princess Cruises also offer healthy smoothies and I decided it was the perfect way to reward myself after a run. I must admit it didn’t look too appetising, slightly more like mushy peas with a slice on the side than a delicious drink, but with spinach, ginger, mango, pineapple and herbs it was so luscious. Next up, did someone say spa? Could anything be more perfect after a workout than an hour or two of absolute rest and relaxation, soothing music and aromas hitting your senses and leaving you almost instantly rejuvenated? There are plenty of areas to relax and enjoy all the various saunas and steam rooms, as well as the outdoor Spa Pool (it’s adults only too), plus seating areas and thermal beds. There’s so much to do here that you could pass hour after indulgent hour, all from as little as $5 per person. You can also purchase an unlimited pass for your cruise, with the cost dependent on your cruise duration. There are tons of treatments on offer but anyone who is in training or works out regularly, can start with an Ocean Wrap to counteract a build-up of lactic acid. You’ll be wrapped in seaweed and left to float in a bath of various lotions and potions, cleansing the muscles and reducing acid build-up. Finally, it was time to test the food. This is what cruising is really known for and there’s definitely a misconception out there that cruise ships are bursting at the seams with too much of a good thing, something that might be a
nightmare for anyone who is easily tempted. This is totally not the case with Princess Cruises and proof came in the form of a Healthy Choice menu, the dishes on which we devoured in the International Dining Room having worked up quite the appetite. Starters included
Chilled Avocado and Bay Shrimp or Kale Salad with Toasted Pumpkin and Sunflower Seeds, followed by Poached Salmon or Beef Tenderloin for your main course. There are even desserts on offer, you’re on holiday after all, with a choice of simple fresh fruit salad or warm baked apple. Every dish was delicious and I’d have been more than happy to dine off the Healthy Choice menu day after day, albeit with some treats along the way. For a lot of us, getting in ‘ship shape’ starts before we step aboard and resumes once we’re back on dry land. But we live healthier lives than ever on a day-to-day basis and so Princess Cruises are reversing the role, making becoming fitter and healthier at sea an effortless part of the experience of being on board their ships. So we can eat healthily and train and sleep to our heart’s content, with plenty of ice cream and great steaks thrown in for good measure.

A contemporary classic. Queen Elizabeth is the youngest ship in the Cunard fleet, with a timeless interior that celebrates Art Deco design. Beautiful decorative touches and elegant flourishes create a distinctive, warm ambience, raised to new levels in her November 2018 refit. Her wide open deck spaces, grand public rooms and cosy bars and lounges host all manner of sociable activities and entertainment, from favourite pastimes to something entirely new, wherever you are in the world.

A breath of fresh air.
Occasions to remember.
A most delicious tradition.
Queen Elizabeth’s spacious Games Deck is right up on the top of the ship, yet perfectly shaded from the sun. You can play a wide variety of games here, from croquet to paddle tennis, and perhaps even challenge yourself at a friendly tournament.
In 2018 and 2019, Queen Elizabeth plays host to special Big Band Ball voyages. Inspired by the iconic big bands of the 1920s, these will bring together hugely talented musicians from across the ship to create a swinging 13-piece orchestra, with vocalists including Joe Stilgoe.
Afternoon Tea is a prized Cunard signature. White-gloved waiters serve cucumber sandwiches, fresh scones and tea accompanied by the orchestra in the majestic Queens Room. Or perhaps enjoy The Lion’s Share in the Golden Lion pub, served with a flight of beers.
A blissful setting.
Theatrical flair.
An exquisite soundtrack.
The Garden Lounge, taking its inspiration from the hothouses of Kew Gardens, is the perfect place to sit back, relax and appreciate sunny days at sea, whether over an informal breakfast, Afternoon Tea or a refreshing cocktail.
Queen Elizabeth’s lavish Royal Court Theatre would rival many venues in the West End or on Broadway. Seating almost 1,000 guests, it offers an incredible atmosphere for the dazzling shows it hosts – and you can even reserve a private box for a small fee.
Queen Elizabeth is positively alive with music. Wherever you go on board, you will likely hear live music drifting through the air. Pianists, harpists, string quartets and contemporary bands are all resident on board, playing throughout the day and into the evening.

Alaska 2019.
Asia, Alaska & Australasia 2020.
During spring and summer 2019, Queen Elizabeth will embark on her first ever season in Alaska. In her luxurious company, you’ll be able to discover its majestic, untamed wilderness and unique frontier spirit. Here, vast swathes of pine forests, electric blue glaciers, serene fjords and the legendary Inside Passage are the settings for an array of dramatic scenery and wildlife. You can choose from four roundtrip itineraries from Vancouver, each 10 nights in duration.
Queen Elizabeth will spend most of the following year exploring distant shores around the mighty Pacific Ocean. It’s an ideal opportunity to delve into the contrasting islands, intriguing cities and rich cultures of Japan. New for Queen Elizabeth in 2020 – are the natural wonders of subtropical Ishigako and Kushiro, whose marshlands are the only habitat of the rare Japanese crane.
On these itineraries, Queen Elizabeth will make her first acquaintances with many of Alaska’s intriguing towns for the first time. Among them is Juneau, the state capital, set among steep forested mountains. There’s Ketchikan too, known for its photogenic Creek Street boardwalk and intricately carved totem poles. Sitka has an intriguing Russian heritage, while Skagway tells the story of fortune seekers who once risked all to reach the Klondike goldfields.
Queen Elizabeth returns to Alaska in 2020, visiting historic Seward for the first time. You can also discover southeast Asia where her maiden arrival into Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, awaits alongside long-time favourites like Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City. Or let the incredible landscapes and friendly cities captivate you Down Under. Voyages range from two to 18 nights, and can be combined to create longer routes of up to 40 nights for an unforgettable in-depth exploration.

TS YEAR AS the European Capital of Culture may be coming to a close but the future of Valletta has never looked more golden. The
miniature Maltese marvel still feels like a secret. While its spirit feels similar to southern Italy, its tumble of narrow streets is unlike any you’ve seen elsewhere, instead as unique as the locals who serve your cold Cisk to tables stacked precariously on steep, ancient steps. Valletta is already the starting point for P&O Cruises Eastern Mediterranean itineraries and countless cruise lines will sail into the city in 2019. Here’s how to spend 36 hours in Europe’s most underrated destination.

DON’T MISS…
A
S A MERE slip of a city, and a very
walkable one at that, Valletta invites you to cram a lot into your time here. Excursions can take you north to Gozo and the Blue Lagoon but with a whole itinerary of Mediterranean beaches ahead of you and the Azure Window sadly no more, why not dedicate your time here to the city itself instead. The best views in town are a five-minute walk from your ship, at the Barrakka Gardens. The Three Cities are a sight for sore eyes at any hour but the sandstone walls of Birgu, Senglea and Conspicua glow golden when the sun starts to set. Take in vistas stretching across the Grand Harbour and out towards Fort St Angelo from Upper Barrakka Gardens, before taking the lift down to the waterside. It’s free to go down and you’ll emerge right where you need to be for ferries and taxi boats across the harbour, but make sure you keep a euro back to save your legs on the return trip to street level. If you’re skipping sunset, time your visit to the gardens at 12pm or 4pm to watch the cannon fire from the Saluting Battery below. Tucked inconspicuously away in a spot 150ft below the Upper Barrakka Gardens are the Lascaris War Rooms. Their cavernous tunnels offer shaded respite from the Mediterranean’s sweltering heat at the height of summer but there’s more to them than that. Malta was bombed so relentlessly during World War II – at times enduring up to 10 air raids a day – that King George made the unusual decision to award the whole island the George Cross. The War Rooms housed Britain’s War HQ and served as the point from which all offensive operations were directed during the war, its network of top-secret underground tunnels and control rooms vital to Malta’s defense. Since used by NATO before becoming one of Malta’s most popular attractions, the Lascaris War Rooms are a must for history buffs and are just minutes away from the port. Book a guided tour to get the most from your visit; the guides are incredibly interesting and knowledgeable. They’re available twice daily at 10.30am and 1pm. 80

Like any good city in the Mediterranean, Valletta’s skyline is scattered with church domes. St. John’s Co-Cathedral looks like one of the most unassuming of them all from outside but push open the doors to discover a different story altogether within. Every inch of the interior is opulent, gilded and marbled to within an inch of its life, from the floor beneath your feet to the frescoed ceilings overhead. The co-cathedral was built for the Knights of Saint John and while they were known to adopt a ‘more is more’ approach to décor, it was a Baroque-style revamp in the 17th century that really upped the ante. Italian artist Caravaggio spent a short time as one of the Knights of Saint John and you’ll find some of his work in the cathedral’s oratory. Leave your heels at home and make sure shoulders and knees are covered for your visit. Sailing yacht in the Blue Lagoon
Valletta’s backstreets are an attraction in themselves. Malta as a whole still looks like it did decades ago, which is why Hollywood’s location scouts return here time and time again. Valletta’s well-worn vintage shop fronts and peeling corner balconies were the only things capable of competing with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt on the looks front in By The Sea, the film they produced here during their honeymoon in 2014. The city is so small that it is impossible to get lost; you’ll find yourself at the water’s edge eventually, whichever way you walk. Grabbing a ricotta pastizzi for sustenance and embarking on your own walking tour of the city costs barely anything but it’ll have you hankering for a return trip within minutes of setting off.

Maltese wine and cheese board
VER SINCE THE Knights of St John
commanded the city, locals have come from across Malta to stock up their pantries at Is-Suqtal-Bel, Valletta’s indoor food market. Having reopened in January 2018, years after falling into a state of decay and dilapidation, Maltese specialities are back on the menu and drawing a mixed crowd to the market’s communal Kapunata by the sea tables. The basement of the market is reserved for stalls selling local wines and cheeses, tasty souvenirs against which the usual fridge magnet just doesn’t quite stack up. Head back up to the ground floor and you’ll find a smorgasbord of eateries gathered from the island’s finest. There’s something about the hot Med sun that makes you crave fresh Asian fare and Zest has been Malta’s go-to since becoming one of the first Asian restaurants on the island 15 years ago. If you’re more inclined towards tasting your way around a destination, head to Gululu for Maltese dishes and sharing platters. Garlicky ‘bigilla’ beans are Moorish, as is the sweet and salty kapunata, but it is the traditional dish of fried pasta with bacon, egg and cheese that serves up the satisfying stodge you need after hours of exploring.

Osteria.Ve may be the number one restaurant in Malta according to Trip Advisor but the appeal of this tiny little place in Bergu isn’t down to food alone. Go here for dinner, taking a traditional dgħajsa from Valletta to the Three Cities, where an amble through tangled streets littered with tiny churches and lit with a golden glow finally brings you to a slip of a restaurant. Overlook the aesthetics of the menu; word-processed and laminated sounding klaxons to those in search of authenticity, but what Stefano and Thomas lack in style, they make up for in service with a smile. The food here is good, think fresh-today tuna tartar with juicy peaches, followed by Bigoli in rich duck ragu, but it is the service that makes eating at Osteria.Ve so memorable. There are only a handful of tables so booking in advance is a must; grab the table for two in the window overlooking Bergu’s eerily silent streets and you have hit the jackpot. www.bolsovercruiseclub.com|Into The Blue

DRINK UP….
W
HILE ONCE FAMOUS for its
raucous Strait Street, an area frequented by potty-mouthed sailors in search of a good time, up until a few years ago, Valletta had a tendency to fall silent after 6pm. But that was then and this is now. Café Society led the charge, becoming the kind of place locals are reluctant to wax lyrical about for fear of giving the secret away. Truth be told, it is Valletta’s favourite evening hideaway, where the cold Cisk lager costs a euro and the night plays out beneath crystal chandeliers and world flags strung end-to-end in the street. Café Society hosts its own film club too, a must-do if your visit to Valletta falls over a Thursday evening. The steps outside start to fill early as a handful of in-the-know tourists join locals for a film showing with the
Three Cities glittering in the background beyond. Strait Street might be widely regarded as the best place to eat and drink in Malta but nowhere compares to Café Society for atmosphere. If Strait Street has piqued your interest, TicoTico is worth a visit for its retro styling and mismatched interiors alone, having been lovingly restored to look just as it did in its heyday. Just off ‘The Gut’, as Strait Street was once known, is a place that still parties as hard as it did when the sailors were in town. The Pub hit the headlines when Oliver Reed had his last drink at its bar. In town filming Gladiator, party-loving Reed embarked on a boozy afternoon with sailors from the nearby HMS Cumberland, one which ultimately lead to his untimely demise.
The English bar has become something of a shrine to its most famous patron, his portrait appearing numerous times amongst the Union Jack flags and Royal Navy memorabilia. Sailors left their scrawls on the walls upstairs and while you can still do the same, it’s probably best to do so before The Pub has its wicked way with you. Ask a local where to grab a beer and listen to live music in town and they’ll send you underground to the Beer Cave, deep beneath the Castille Hotel. The bare brick of this barrel-shaped spot means it keeps its cool when the rest of Malta sizzles in summer. Its beer menu is vast with over a hundred varieties on offer and the open mic nights attract the best musical talent on the island. Strait Street, Valletta

streets ahead of the competition when it comes to capturing the attention of cruisers stopping by on a mini break. Nowhere merges naughty and nice quite like Amsterdam, but there’s a lot more to the city than rouged Amsterdam skyline
Irish hospitality that makes a Dublin weekender so enticing. For such a diminutive capital, Dublin serves up a hefty slice of hedonistic endeavours and historic appeal. When even the most dancing-averse of feet aren’t being prompted into a jig by fiddled folk music, they’re pounding the streets on walking tours that unearth the city’s powerful past. Explore the history behind Ireland’s most famous tipples on tours of the Jameson Distillery Bow St. and the Guinness Storehouse, your thirst suitably whetted for the traditional Irish haunts crammed into the city streets. Anyone who gets their kicks from books not bottles will be entranced by Dublin’s literary legacy, its city streets offering endless inspiration to some of the greatest writers of our time; Wilde, Yeats and Joyce are all present and accounted for at the Dublin Writers Museum.

Culture vultures will find more art and artefacts in its 50-plus galleries and museums than they could thoughtfully contemplate in a month, never mind a day or two; the Museumplein alone cocoons world-class institutions including the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum within its borders. ON’T TRY AND fix what
isn’t broken, or so goes the saying, and there isn’t a thing about Bruges’ Brothers Grimm-style squares and swan-scattered lakes that couldn’t be bettered anyhow. We’ve been flocking to the city for centuries, lured by warm waffles and Belgian beers that go down even better when the temperatures plummet and the Christmas lights strung above the Markt twinkle into action. It’s hard to find fault with a city that looks like a fairytale and smells like chocolate. Bruges is crammed with historic highlights too, with the Provincial Palace to the Belfry and Bruges City Hall standing out in a crowd of impressive architecture.

Bruges and there’s a reason the medieval marvel is a mini cruise favourite. But there is a Belgium beyond Bruges and it starts in Antwerp. Achingly hip and historic in equal measure, the country’s second city impresses with a combination of cutting-edge architecture and Art Nouveau gems. Visit the MAS museum in the ‘t Eilandje district, a harbourside hotspot for hipster locals and in-the-know visitors. While MAS tells the tale of Antwerp’s residents, the MoMu is all about its fashion, while the Red Star Line Museum feels more relevant than ever with its inspiring insights into the emigration of thousands from Europe to America in the 1800s. Fans of the Old Masters
can visit the former studio of Pieter Paul Rubens, while shopaholics flex the plastic on the Nationalestraat. When you’ve ticked the usual suspects off your list, Antwerp promises the perfect alternative weekend away.
