What Our Learners Say

Ahmed Mohammad Maths GCSE ‘I like the teaching methods in class; they really help me learn. We do a mixture of presentations and group work and our teachers made sure we were fully prepared for our exams by letting us practice our techniques using mock GCSE papers. I’m currently studying Business Studies Level 2 alongside my Maths GCSE. I hope to go to university to study Business Management.

www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

Janet Grundy Pre-GCSE English I’m studying English as part of my job at Royal Bolton Hospital. I’m really enjoying the course, especially the grammar side of things. I have much more confidence now, both at work when writing reports and at home. I would really like to progress to my English Level 2 next. The qualification will help me to apply to be a nursing associate and then continue my training to become a staff nurse.

Beth Core Hairdressing Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Egerton Hair & Beauty ‘I completed my A-Levels and was destined for university, but I realised early on that this wasn’t the route for me. My Dad started his career as an apprentice, before becoming a successful business owner. This appealed to me, especially as it would allow me to pursue my dream of working in the hairdressing industry. I’m now a fully-qualified stylist at Egerton Hair & Beauty, with a strong client base and a growing reputation for hair-up, bridal and modern colouring techniques. I work closely with Kev, the salon owner, and I get involved in all aspects of managing the salon – cutting hair, styling, client care, bookings,

Kevin Winstanley, owner of Egerton Hair & Beauty ‘Beth has been a breath of fresh air since the day she started with us, showing a level of dedication and commitment way beyond her years.’

‘Returning to education at the age of 27 was daunting, but the Apprenticeship has really built my confidence and given me focus for the future. I have a young family so being able to earn an income whilst learning new skills was the perfect solution for me. I work at Bolton Cares as an apprentice in the Administration Department. I’m involved in a wide variety of tasks and the diverse nature of the role has allowed me to develop enormously. One of my greatest achievements has been my progression in maths. At school I hated the subject but I love it now – something I never thought I would say! I’ve completed my Level 1 qualification and plan to do my GCSE next, then focus on training to become an Accountant in the future. I’m a prime example that you’re never too old for an Apprenticeship; age should never be a barrier to achievement. The structure and work ethic it’s

provided means I’m a good role model to my son. I work hard and it inspires him to work hard too.’

Lisa Antoni, Bolton Cares ‘Gemma is an extremely hardworking and valued member of our team and is known throughout the business as a go-to person; she’s always there to help and will always go the extra mile to ensure she meets the expectations of the person giving the task.’

Higher Education In partnership with

It’s been a great few years for Bolton College; as well as being graded ‘good’ in its recent Ofsted inspection, its Higher Education provision has been ranked sixth in the country for student satisfaction rates. QAA published a report in March 2018 and highlighted Bolton College’s good practice in HE, stating ‘The teacher observation system at Bolton College helps to drive up teaching standards and improve student employability and the student experience.’ The planned merger with the University of Bolton will bring even more opportunities (visit www.boltoncollege.ac.uk/latest-news/mergerupdate). The College meets the needs of many Higher Education students through Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and Certificates (HNCs). Times Higher Education commented that in England, overall student satisfaction stood at 85% but Bolton College exceeded this, hitting 92%!

Dressmaking Level 1 ‘Every week we’ve learnt new skills and we’ve progressed very quickly from basic dressmaking to more complicated projects. I’m looking forward to being able to use my new dressmaking skills to design and make my own traditional dresses. I’ve already recommended the course to a lot of my friends.’ 16

Performing Arts Level 3

‘The best thing about the course is the people! Studying with individuals who all have different personalities, talents and insights has helped me to grow as an actor and build my confidence. I was the lead role in the College production of Peter Pan and I’ve also been lucky to get some amazing experience working as an extra in productions for Sky, Netflix and ITV. My next step is to sign up with a reputable agent and secure work as a TV and film actor.’

‘The course has given me all the tools and skills I need to progress in my career in the catering industry. I’ve enjoyed the variety on the course and having the opportunity to practice my cooking and presentation skills in a real working environment in Signature, the College restaurant. It’s really fast-paced but I love it and can’t wait to learn more new skills and cooking techniques.’

Rebecca Cayton

Cake Decoration Level 2 ‘I’ve always enjoyed baking, especially as I’ve got older and have more spare time now my children are growing up. The facilities at Bolton College are fantastic and there’s always plenty of equipment available for students to use. The course is structured so that we are given a brief to follow but we also have the freedom to put our own spin on the finished design and use our own creative ideas.’ Don’t forget English & Maths pg 4

‘I first studied at Bolton College 20 years ago and returned to refresh and expand my knowledge. The tutors have been fantastic – really supportive and always available to offer advice. The training compliments my existing skills and I’m looking forward to putting what I’ve learnt into practice in the salon. Next I want to enrol on an advanced micro-pigmentation and medical tattooing course.’

Charlotte Maclaine

Theatrical & Media Make-Up Level 4 ‘The course allows me to be creative and learn lots of skills that I wouldn’t normally have had access to. The best part has been learning about prosthetics in special effects make-up - I’ve been involved in making clay moulds and silicone pieces, then learning how to seamlessly apply these to the body. My dream job is to work on TV and film sets as a make-up artist.’

Beauty Therapy Level 3 ‘I love the course, my tutor is very supportive and the facilities at Bolton College are exceptional. I’ve always wanted to own my own business so in the next year I’d like to open up my own Beauty Salon - I’ve been saving to do this since I was 16 and the skills I’ve gained from this course will allow me to do this. In 10 years’ time, I’m aiming to have multiple salons across the region and nationwide.’

Nail Technology Diploma Level 3 ‘The Beauty, Make-up and Nails course gave me experience in a range of different disciplines and helped me decide to specialise in Nail Technology. The tutors give us a lot of encouragement. They all have a background of working in the beauty industry and teach us with practical industry knowledge rather than just ticking off boxes in the curriculum. I’m now hoping to secure a job in a salon and I’m also considering setting up my own business as a mobile nail technician.’

Access to HE in Computing & ICT ‘There is a fantastic atmosphere at Bolton College, the tutors are always available to provide help and the content of the course is helping me progress into Higher Education with confidence. The Advanced Learner Loan is a big plus. It has allowed me to concentrate on my studies without needing to work full-time to pay for my fees up front. I’ve applied to go to university after completing the Access course and I’d like to specialise in back-end development and coding.’

‘I chose the Apprenticeship route, rather than going to university, because I learn best through experience and liked the idea of having a paid job that leads to a recognised qualification. From my very first day on the programme I was able to get stuck in and quickly became part of a highly experienced and professional IT team – I’ve learnt lots from working alongside my colleagues and they’re always happy to help. I’d love to continue my training and complete my Level 4 Apprenticeship.’ Chloe Newsham, working at Bolton College ICT (IT Software, Web and Telecoms) Level 3

Natalie Morris

Construction Level 3 ‘I was told that Bolton College was one of the best colleges in the area for Construction, and so far it’s meeting my high expectations. The College have helped me find a voluntary placement, which helps me to put the skills I’m learning at College into practice. I’m planning to complete my HNC qualification next and then get a training placement to help me decide whether to progress into building, surveying or project management within the construction industry.’

‘I was apprehensive about coming back into education, but the course is structured so it’s really easy to understand and all the students share knowledge and help each other out. I’m really enjoying learning how to do something productive. I currently work in a plumbers merchant and the course has really helped me when serving customers. I’m hoping to enrol on to the Level 3 course next and then make a move into the trade and work as a plumber myself.’ Don’t forget English & Maths pg 4

Nicola Cairnes Counselling Level 2

‘After leaving the Army, I secured employment as a residential child care worker and decided that it would be beneficial to also gain a qualification that would help me progress in my change of career. The course has a good mix of theory and practical work and I feel that I’m getting a good insight into the role of counselling and the benefits it can bring to other people. I’ve applied to do a degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy Professional Practice at Salford University from September and I’d like to be a fully qualified Counsellor in the future.’

Lee Renshaw Barbering Level 2

‘The course is well organised and covers all the skills you need to become a barber. The teaching is structured so everyone can learn at their own pace and there’s plenty of opportunity to put your skills into practice in the onsite salon. I want to complete my Level 3 qualification next, to further expand the techniques I’ve already learnt. My long-term goal is to have my own barbers and be a one-stop shop for male grooming.’

Hairdressing Level 3 ‘I always wanted to be a hairdresser and decided to take the plunge and do my training three years ago. I’ve progressed from the Entry Level course right through to the Level 3, learning new techniques and adding to my skill set each year. I wish I’d done the course years ago – I would definitely recommend it! I’m hoping to open my own salon very soon.’

g n i s s e r d r i g Ha n i r e b r a &B Beth McGlinn Hairdressing Apprenticeship Level 2 Working at John-Lee Guy ‘At the age of 23, I seized the opportunity to completely change my career and I’m so glad I did – I’ve never looked back! I worked really hard and had lots of support from the College and my work colleagues, which enabled me to complete my Apprenticeship in just 18 months. I was then head-hunted by the award-winning John-Lee Guy Salon in Bolton, where I now have my own column. Throughout my training, I’ve learnt additional skills in colouring techniques. I’m now highly skilled in colour creates, colour correction, balayage and ombre as well as Wella blondes and pastel toning. I now deliver masterclasses in the lastest colour techniques to both my junior and senior colleagues at John-Lee Guy. These experiences have ignited my passion for teaching and in the future I’m planning to go to the University

of Bolton so that I can gain my teaching qualifications. Teaching was not something I’d really considered before, but I love to share my knowledge with my peers both at College and in the salon.’

John-Lee Guy, owner of John-Lee Guy ‘It’s a pleasure to employ someone who is keen to push herself and embrace any challenge that faces her. Beth’s adaptability has led to her successfully completing her barber training and this has brought a whole new skill set to the salon and led to the growth and diversification of our client base. Beth embraces the values of the Salon but she has a unique individuality that clients come back for time and time again.’

Sean Parker Barbering Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Head Kandi I’ve always wanted to be a barber. I got in to the trade at Bolton College originally as a full-time learner, gaining a Level 2 and a Level 3 in Barbering. My work placement was at Head Kandi and this is where my manager saw potential in me, and on the back of the placement, he offered me a Level 3 Apprenticeship. I’ve just finished my Apprenticeship and I loved it. I’m really committed to barbering and outside of work, I do a lot of self-study and practical work to perfect my knowledge and abilities – I always aim for a high standard of cutting skills. The Apprenticeship has given me confidence; I was pretty quiet at the start but it’s developed my interpersonal skills and now I love dealing with the clients - I’ve built up my own clientele and last year, I was so happy to win ‘Outstanding Apprentice in Barbering’ at the College’s Apprentice Awards.

Michaela Maddocks, Bolton College Assessor ‘Sean’s proved himself to be the model apprentice and his commitment to his barbering work is so impressive. It’s been wonderful to support him throughout his Apprenticeship journey and I envisage a very bright future for him.’

Samantha Nixon

Working with Children Level 1 ‘I’m passionate about working in childcare and the Early Years course at Bolton College is everything I hoped it would be and more. I’ve enjoyed the practical, hands-on nature of the course. My fellow students are all really friendly and, because we all come from different backgrounds, we benefit from sharing our knowledge and experience with each other. I want to continue my studies at Bolton College and then progress to a job in childcare.’ We offer professional training courses which are ideal for people working in a range of settings within the public, private or voluntary sectors, who wish to raise and broaden their awareness of working / supporting individuals with learning difficulties.

Danielle Naylor

Health and Social Care Level 3 ‘The tutors have been really supportive, especially as I had my baby part-way through studying at Bolton College and needed extra help to make sure I didn’t fall behind in my studies. I’ve been able to make use of the on site nursery to care for my child, which has been fantastic. I’ve completed work experience placements during my course and I represented the College at the Skills Convention in Health & Social Care. The course has inspired me to become a midwife in the future. I’ve secured a place a university to study Adult Nursing in September and then I plan to complete my Masters in Midwifery.’

‘If I was to describe the course I would say it’s been fun, inclusive and has exceeded all my expectations. I originally joined the course to learn the basics of Spanish to help me when I travel abroad. I was nervous about starting the course because I’ve not been in education for a long time, but I’ve been made to feel really welcome and I’ve enjoyed the class so much that I’ve just enrolled to do the next level.’ Don’t forget English & Maths pg 4

Classic Car Restoration ‘I’ve always wanted a VW Karmann Ghia and when I could afford to buy one, I wanted to be able to do a lot of the repairs and maintenance work myself. I’m enjoying developing my knowledge and skills in electrics, body panel repair and chrome repair. I’m looking forward to showing off my car at shows across the UK throughout the year.’

What’s more you get to work alongside highly skilled mechanics every day. My Apprenticeship at Boundary Garage in Bury has been a really positive experience. I achieved my Level 3 qualification and was then offered a permanent job in recognition of my hard work and achievements.’ Jake Roberts, Motor Vehicle Body Repair Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Boundary Garage

Public Services HND ‘I chose to study for my HND in Public Services at Bolton College because it offered such good value for money and I liked the teaching style of the tutors – they are very friendly and always happy to offer help and advice. I would highly recommend the course. It’s not all about sitting in a classroom every day – we’ve had lots of eye-opening and interesting experiences including a trip to Poland to visit Auschwitz and a visit to the courts in Manchester to watch a real case from the public gallery. When I finish my degree I want to work in Border Control and Immigration.’ Don’t forget English & Maths pg 4

Triple Special Olympics Gold Medallist; Double Cycling World Champion; GreaterSport Ambassador; Special Olympic GB Athlete Leader; and Bolton Sports Awards Volunteer of the Year – Bolton College’s Kiera Byland can claim all of these accolades, at the age of just 20! Cyclist Kiera, who is studying a Sports BTEC Diploma Level 3, is grateful for the support she has received from Bolton College, helping her to fulfil her sporting ambitions and dreams, “I have a lot of commitments and I travel all over the world. me to reach my potential, both in and out of the classroom.” In May this year, Kiera received another accolade, the Inspire Awards Sporting Achiever of the Year 2018. Over 500 people saw Kiera take to the stage at the Macron Stadium to receive her award, including Bolton College’s Principal Bill Webster. It continues to be onwards and upwards for Kiera. In just nine months, she will travel to Abu Dhabi to represent Team GB in the Special Olympics World Games - we’re sure Kiera will continue to make Bolton College, and her country, very proud.

Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 2 ‘The course is a brilliant way to get qualified quickly. At College I learn all the theory, policies and procedures I need to do my job, then I get to spend time in a classroom on placement and get an insight into the job in real-life. Teaching Assistants play such an important role in the classroom and from my viewpoint, the role really fits around my lifestyle. I also have a passion for working with children, which helps, and I love that Teaching Assistants can have such a positive impact on the life of a child. If you’re good with children, then this is definitely the course for you!’

If your young person is keen to get into the world of work and earn whilst they learn, an Apprenticeship is exactly what they're looking for. Our Apprenticeships are designed to kick-start careers whilst providing the option to go on to Further or Higher Education. Apprentices benefit from support and guidance in and out of College whilst gaining a valuable insight into their chosen career from industry professionals. Our Apprenticeship programmes consist of four key elements and begin with the learner in their first job and earning a wage.

3 English & Maths Ofsted said 'Apprentices develop a good understanding of how to apply their skills in English and mathematics within their vocational work'.
