Study Programme Overview

Elements of study

This programme has been designed to introduce you to the creative sector, enabling you to make informed future progression choices while developing and applying your knowledge and acquiring a range of relevant practical, communication and personal development skills.

Your programme consists of the following elements:

This qualification is suitable if you have an interest in art, design, media or a related subject and wish to explore and extend this interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience.

What You’ll Learn The content of the programme was developed with representatives from universities, further education colleges and employers to ensure that it provides you with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to progress to the next level of education and training.

• Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent) • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

Entry Requirements You don’t need any formal qualifications, but a passion for all aspects of art, design and media is a must. We will ask to see a portfolio of your art/design work and invite you to an informal interview.

Students are assessed via a ‘Final Major Project’ which takes place at the end of the course when they are at their best. This large project allows students to demonstrate all the learning that has taken place through completion of the other units. This unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and determines the overall qualification grade.

You will undertake several projects and learn to work creatively to a client’s brief. If required for your chosen HE course, you may wish to study English & maths to Level 3.

Study Programme Overview

There are two pathways:

Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

• Art & Design with drawing, mixed media, printmaking, painting and three dimensional design. • Art & Design with drawing, mixed media, animation, graphic design and photography.

This programme has been designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to further study and training in a range of art and design subjects, including fine art, photography, graphic design, and others. Many students will have identified a specific career in the creative industries that they wish to progress to such as fashion designer, graphic designer, product designer or architect, and will use this qualification as a starting point.

What You’ll Learn The qualification will provide students with: • Research, ideas development, the use of technical skills and evaluation. • The diversity of roles and responsibilities in the industry and the personal and professional characteristics needed for a career in the creative media industry. • Communication skills used in the industries and exploration of the specific skills and attributes required for communicating with an audience in the production of art and design outcomes. • An opportunity to demonstrate understanding through the production of a portfolio of evidence via a final major project. • The history and context of art and design disciplines and an understanding of the value of contextual research in informing practice. • An opportunity to integrate and use previously acquired skills, knowledge and understanding and to explore and develop more specific techniques, skills and attributes across art and design subjects. • An opportunity to integrate and use skills, knowledge and understanding and to explore and develop specific techniques, skills and attributes.

How will I be Assessed? The qualification is made up of eight units. All units are delivered through vocational learning and relate to the art and design sector. The units focus on the underpinning skills, knowledge and understanding that support all art and design activity. The units have been designed to allow our College to deliver them in a way that meets the specific needs of our students, taking into account college resources, relationships with local creative employers and responding to the fast-paced nature of the creative industries. Students are assessed via a ‘Final Major Project’ which takes place at the end of the course when they are at their best. This large project allows students to demonstrate all the learning that has taken place through completion of the other units.

Study Programme Overview This programme has been designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to degree level study in art and design, or into employment. It gives you an opportunity to explore, develop and test your creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from further to higher education. It will enable you to develop a portfolio of work that could support progression into a range of higher education courses, usually in conjunction with other Level 3 qualifications. Most learners progress to the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design.

What You’ll Learn Students can expect to learn the following on the course: • Critical and contextual awareness of different perspectives and approaches. • Research, analyse and evaluate relevant information and ideas to develop creative solutions. • Practical methods and skills for creative production. • Solve complex problems through the application of practical, theoretical and technical understanding. • Critically review the effectiveness and appropriateness of methods, actions and results. • Research, planning, time management and actions to access progression opportunities. Study Programme Overview Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study. This course has been designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to degree level study in art and design, into further education and training, or into employment. It provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in the visual arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from further to higher education. It is generally delivered over two years and will allow students to apply for a range of higher education courses.

What You’ll Learn This course offers two pathways: Art & Design with drawing, mixed media, printmaking, painting and three-dimensional design. Art & Design with drawing, mixed media, animation, graphic design and photography. You will also learn: • Different perspectives & approaches • Understanding & adapting practical methods and skills for creative production • Critically reviewing the effectiveness and appropriateness of methods, actions & results • Using evaluative & reflective skills • Research, planning, time management and actions to access progression opportunities • Presenting yourself and your work to appropriate audiences

Elements of study Your programme consists of the following elements: • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life for 50 days during your course) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

Entry Requirements A grade 4 or above in Art/Design or Graphics, plus four additional grade 4 GCSEs, including Maths and English.

How will I be Assessed? Assessment is via a ‘Final Major Project’ which takes place at the end of the course when you are at your best. This large project allows you to demonstrate the learning that has taken place through completion of other units. This unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and determines the overall qualification grade.
