Studying has given me a new-found confidence – I now know that I’m capable of achieving anything I want and with my new qualifications I’ve secured a job that I love!
I was an Engineer for 44 years and when I retired, I decided it was time to get back into education. The course has been challenging but I’ve learnt a lot.
I’m studying English as part of my job at Royal Bolton Hospital. I’m really enjoying the course, especially the grammar side of things. I have much more confidence now, both at work when writing reports and at home.

‘Returning to education at the age of 27 was daunting, but the Apprenticeship has really built my confidence and given me focus for the future. I have a young family so being able to earn an income whilst learning new skills was the perfect solution for me. I work at Bolton Cares as an apprentice in the Administration Department. I’m involved in a wide variety of tasks and the diverse nature of the role has allowed me to develop enormously. One of my greatest achievements has been my progression in maths. At school I hated the subject but I love it now – something I never thought I would say! I’ve completed my Level 1 qualification and plan to do my GCSE next, then focus on training to become an Accountant in the future. I’m a prime example that you’re never too old for an

I work hard and it inspires him to work hard too.’ ‘Gemma is an extremely hardworking and valued member of our team and is known throughout the business as a go-to person; she’s always there to help and will always go the extra mile to ensure she meets the expectations of the person giving the task.’

My work placement was at Head Kandi and this is where my manager saw potential in me, and on the back of the placement, he offered me a Level 3 Apprenticeship. I’ve just finished my Apprenticeship and I loved it. I’m really committed to barbering and outside of work, I do a lot of self-study and practical work to perfect my knowledge and abilities – I always aim for a high standard of cutting skills. The Apprenticeship has given me confidence; I was pretty quiet at the start but it’s developed my interpersonal skills and now I love dealing with the clients - I’ve built up my own clientele and last year, I was so happy to win ‘Outstanding Apprentice in Barbering’ at the College’s Apprentice Awards.
‘Sean’s proved himself to be the model apprentice and his commitment to his barbering work is so impressive. It’s been wonderful to support him throughout his Apprenticeship journey and I envisage a very bright future for him.’

Nail Technology Diploma Level 3 ‘The Beauty, Make-up and Nails course gave me experience in a range of different disciplines and helped me decide to specialise in Nail Technology. The tutors give us a lot of encouragement. They all have a background of working in the beauty industry and teach us with practical industry knowledge rather than just ticking off boxes in the curriculum. I’m now hoping to secure a job in a salon and I’m also considering setting up my own business as a mobile Nail Technician.’

‘I would definitely recommend the course to others because it’s very practical. We spend time in class actually building computers and fixing faults rather than just learning theory. I recently started a new job in IT Support and Sales and I’d like to go to university in the future to expand my knowledge even further.’ www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

‘I chose the Apprenticeship route, rather than going to university, because I learn best through experience and liked the idea of having a paid job that leads to a recognised qualification. From my very first day on the programme I was able to get stuck in and quickly became part of a highly experienced and professional IT team – I’ve learnt lots from working alongside my colleagues and they’re always happy to help. I’d love to continue my training and complete my Level 4 Apprenticeship.’ Chloe Newsham, working at Bolton College ICT (IT Software, Web and Telecoms) Level 3

‘After leaving the army, I secured employment as a Residential Child Care Worker and decided that it would be beneficial to also gain a qualification that would help me progress in my change of career. The course has a good mix of theory and practical work and I feel that I’m getting a good insight into the role of counselling and the benefits it can bring to other people. I’ve applied to do a degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy Professional Practice at Salford University and I’d like to be a fully qualified Counsellor in the future.’ www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

‘I was apprehensive about coming back into education, but the course is structured so it’s really easy to understand and all the students share knowledge and help each other out. I’m really enjoying learning how to do something productive. I currently work in a plumbers merchant and the course has really helped me when serving customers. I’m hoping to enrol on to the Level 3 course next and then make a move into the trade and work as a plumber myself.’ 32

Working with Children Level 1 ‘I’m passionate about working in childcare and the early years course at Bolton College is everything I hoped it would be and more. I’ve enjoyed the practical, hands-on nature of the course. My fellow students are all really friendly and, because we all come from different backgrounds, we benefit from sharing our knowledge and experience with each other. I want to continue my studies at Bolton College and then progress to a job in childcare.’

Louise Horpe Spanish
‘If I was to describe the course I would say it’s been fun, inclusive and has exceeded all my expectations. I originally joined the course to learn the basics of Spanish to help me when I travel abroad. I was nervous about starting the course because I’ve not been in education for a long time, but I’ve been made to feel really welcome and I’ve enjoyed the class so much that I’ve just enrolled to do the next level.’

Jake Roberts Motor Vehicle Body Repair Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Boundary Garage ‘I prefer working to being in a classroom, and being able to earn whilst you learn is a real financial bonus. What’s more you get to work alongside highly skilled body repairers every day. My Apprenticeship has been a really positive experience. I achieved my Level 3 qualification and I now work here full-time.’
Alex Nolan Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at A&S Car Care Centre Ltd ‘I was attracted to an Apprenticeship because I prefer using my hands rather than being in a classroom. I’m working on customers’ cars on a daily basis so I have a responsibility to do a good job. I get lots of help and advice from the mechanics I work alongside.’ ‘Taking on an apprentice has worked really well for us as a business. At first we had an extra pair of hands in the workshop, but we now have someone who is highly capable of working on his own and is an asset to our business.’

Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 2 ‘The course is a brilliant way to get qualified quickly. At College I learn all the theory, policies and procedures I need to do my job, then I get to spend time in a classroom on placement and get an insight into the job in real-life. Teaching Assistants play such an important role in the classroom and from my viewpoint, the role really fits around my lifestyle. I also have a passion for working with children, which helps, and I love that Teaching Assistants can have such a positive impact on the life of a child. If you’re good with children, then this is definitely the course for you!’
