Fitness Academy Level 2 Overview The Level 2 Fitness Academy at Bolton College is a full-time programme that prepares you specifically for working in the Health & Fitness industry. Over one year you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and confidence in order to gain a range of industry-recognised qualifications. The main focus is a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing, with additional awards in leading circuit sessions, spin classes and suspension training.

Fitness Academy Level 2 CONTENT Bolton College has great partnership working arrangements with local Health & Fitness facilities such as David Lloyd, Exercise4Less and The Gym. Important parts of the programme are frequent visits to local gyms, allowing you to take part in activities and interact with the staff employed there. The programme also requires all trainee instructors to undertake a work experience placement of 30 hours in a gym, to fully appreciate the role.

The new fitness gym facilities at Bolton College contain the latest Matrix training equipment to respond to current fitness-industry demands.

The gym facilities are not only used for teaching members of the Fitness Academy to become instructors, but are also available for training yourself.


Fitness Academy Level 2 Structure Certificate in Gym Instructing (5 units) Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise & Fitness Instructors

• Covers the structure & function of the systems of the body e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory & muscular Assessments = Workbook (21 questions) Multiple choice exam (30 questions in 45 minutes / Pass = 21)

Providing a Positive Customer Experience in the Exercise Environment • Covers health & safety, legal aspects & professional conduct e.g. engaging with clients & meeting customer expectations

Assessments = Workbook (36 questions) Tutor observation of client consultation & practical instructing

Lifestyle & Health Awareness Management

• Covers supporting clients with active lifestyles, preventing health conditions, physical activity & healthy eating advice Assessments = Workbook (21 questions)

Gym Based Programme Planning & Preparation • Covers planning appropriate fitness training sessions for a range of different client needs (case studies) Assessments = Written knowledge questions Completion of suitable gym session plans for experienced younger & older clients

Gym Based Programme Delivery & Professional Instruction

• Covers how to professionally instruct, adapt & progress a range of body weight, resistance machine & free weight exercises Assessments = Ongoing tutor observations of practical instructing & final consultation with client & full gym session

Fitness Academy Progression

Once you have achieved your Level 2, you have the potential to progress onto the Level 3 Fitness Academy to become a qualified Personal Trainer. The Level 3 Fitness Academy at Bolton College also includes awards in leading kettlebell training, group resistance sessions and outdoor activities. There is also now an option to move up into Higher Education and gain your Advanced Personal Trainer qualification, as part of the new Level 4 Academy.

Due to the great combination of qualifications and experience gained on this programme, you can also progress directly into employment.


UNIT: ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY FOR EXERCISE & FITNESS INSTRUCTORS

• Throughout the course, you will develop your understanding of the structure, function and integration of the various systems of the body. • You will also focus on how the muscular, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, nervous and energy systems adapt as your fitness improves.

• Included is the use of anatomical terminology and an appreciation of training special populations such as younger, older and pregnant clients.

• This unit covers the components of fitness, such as muscular strength, speed and flexibility, and the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.

• You will understand the importance of healthy eating, hydration and giving nutritional advice to clients to promote better awareness.

• By exploring barriers clients face, such as time, and the many approaches to overcome them, you will learn to help, advise and support clients.

Unit: Providing a Positive Customer Experience

• This unit explores the health, safety and legal requirements of the job whilst developing your communication skills to support clients.
