Fitness Academy Level 3 Overview The Level 3 Fitness Academy at Bolton College is a full-time programme that prepares you for progressing within the Health & Fitness industry. Over one year you will develop your knowledge, skills and abilities to achieve a range of industry-recognised qualifications. The main focus is a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training, with additional awards in leading outdoor fitness, studio resistance and kettlebell training.

Fitness Academy Level 3 CONTENT Bolton College has partnerships with local Health & Fitness facilities such as David Lloyd, Exercise4Less and The Gym. Frequent visits to local gyms will allow you to take part in activities and interact with the staff employed there. All trainee Personal Trainers will benefit from a work experience placement of 30 hours in order to access a wide range of clients.
The new Matrix fitness gym facilities at Bolton College contain the latest exercise equipment, replicating the demands of the industry.
The gym facilities are not only used for teaching members of the Fitness Academy to become instructors, but are also available for training yourself.
Fitness Academy Level 3 Structure Diploma in Personal Training (6 units) Applied Anatomy & Physiology
• Covers detailed structure & functioning of the systems of the body (e.g. endocrine, optimal posture & disease processes) Assessments = Workbook (17 questions) Multiple choice exam (20 questions in 25 minutes / Pass = 14)
Providing a Positive Customer Experience in the Exercise Environment
• Covers lifestyle & psychological factors, medical conditions, theories of behaviour change & providing evidence-based advice Assessments = Workbook (18 questions) Tutor observation of client consultation & documentation

• Covers screening, postural & fitness assessments, use of SMART goals, reviewing client progress & use of alternative environments

Award in Instructing Kettlebell Training Sessions • Covers planning, instruction & evaluation of kettlebell training sessions (e.g. safety, core stability & range of uses)

Fitness Academy ProgressionS
Once you have achieved your Level 3, you have the qualifications for a career as a Personal Trainer in the Health & Fitness industry. There is also an option to move into Higher Education and become an Advanced Personal Trainer, as part of the new Fitness Academy Level 4. The new part-time (two days) Level 4 Academy includes Active IQ Level 4 Certificates in Advanced Personal Training & Strength & Conditioning.
Due to the level of prior qualifications and experience needed to access the Fitness Academy Level 4, you should currently be working in the industry.
Unit: Applied Anatomy & Physiology
• Throughout the programme, you will develop your understanding of the structure and integrated functioning of the body’s different systems
• You will focus on posture, planes of movement, core stability, musculo-skeletal conditions, spinal disorders and disease processes
• Included is the effect of exercise on neuromuscular connections, energy system utilisation and endocrine system glands and hormones
Applied Anatomy & Physiology Preparation Tasks Postural deviations can result from birth defects, environmental and lifestyle-related issues, leading to the overuse and underuse of certain muscles. This unit covers factors affecting health and wellbeing, medical conditions and diseases such as obesity, hypertension and arthritis.
