Study Programme Overview

Elements of Study

Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

Your programme consists of the following elements:

This growth sector offers excellent career opportunities in electronics, mechanics, manufacturing and design engineering. The rewards include a job that is well paid, diverse and engaging and the opportunity to develop transferable skills which are in demand locally, nationally and worldwide.

• Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent) • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

Courses are delivered by tutors with a wealth of specialist skills, based on years of industry experience and academic status. The curriculum is furthermore developed alongside employer needs.

Entry Requirements

Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

How will I be Assessed?

What You’ll Learn • Working Safely in an engineering environment • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering • Using and communicating technical information In addition, optional units including: • Producing mechanical engineering drawings using a CAD system • Producing platework components and assemblies • Assembling and testing electronic circuits

We ask that you have three GCSEs at grade 3 or above. You must have Maths at Grade 4 or above.

You will be continually assessed throughout the year; there will be no exams.

Supporting Your Learning and Wellbeing We want you to enjoy every minute of College, both in the classroom and out of it, so we have a range of dedicated support and wellbeing services. These include FREE travel; FREE breakfast; dedicated Learning Development Mentors; impartial advice and guidance; dedicated one-to-one support for learners with additional needs; and support with the cost of College, plus much more.

You will have the opportunity to complete work experience during the course. Many of our learners are offered a permanent position at the end of their placement. Around 15 of this year’s learners gained some kind of employment through exposure to the industry. If required for your chosen career or HE course, you may wish to study English & maths to Level 3.

Future Opportunities Alongside your studies, you’ll have a unique opportunity to be part of the University of Bolton’s EXCEED programme. This will give you a range of additional skills and experiences, and includes masterclasses; university visits; access to industry experts; and mentoring and support with your university application, perfect for that next step into Higher Education. After you have completed the course you could remain in College and progress on to the Foundation Diploma Level 3 course. Alternatively, if you choose to look for paid work you could opt for an Engineering or Manufacturing Apprenticeship. Check out opportunities at the University of Bolton by visiting www.bolton.ac.uk Following further study you could work as: • An Electrical Engineer where you could earn up to £40,000 a year, depending on experience. Once Chartered, you could earn £45,000 a year or more • A Telecoms Engineer, earning between £16,000 and £30,000 a year • A Design and Development Engineer, earning between £21,000 and £55,000 a year, depending on experience

Entry Requirements We ask that you have either four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths, English and Science or the Engineering BTEC Diploma Level 2
