How will I be Assessed?

Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

Assessment will be carried out through a variety of methods, including practical assessments, assignments and tests.

This Entry Certificate aims to develop your interest and passion for the hair and beauty industry by providing a practical introduction that will prepare you for further learning or training, such as Level 1 Hairdressing, Level 1 Beauty Therapy or Level 1 Barbering.

Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

We encourage our students to continue their English & maths study to Level 3. Elements of Study Your programme consists of the following elements: • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent) • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills).

Alternatively, if you choose to look for paid work you could opt for a Hairdressing Apprenticeship and work as a Hairdressing Apprentice. Following further study you could work as: • A fully-trained Hairdresser where you could earn between £14,000 and £20,000 a year, depending on experience. • A Salon Manager, earning between £18,000 and £30,000 a year.

Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements, but you should be committed to learning and keen to practise new skills, whilst working with others. The Level 1 qualification is ideal if you are looking to gain an insight into the hairdressing and barbering industry as you will learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and career progression in this sector. Hairdressing & make-up Hair Services (Women’s Hairdressing) get into Diploma Level 2 career mode the best young stylists & make-up artists!

Study Programme Overview If you are under 19 and are considering a course in the fast moving, fashion orientated world of hairdressing then this is the course for you. This one year course is a stepping stone into the exciting world of the hairdressing industry. It will introduce you to the discipline of a working environment and encourage you to develop your artistic ability. The course is delivered in our state-of-the-art Hairdressing Academy which includes five large air conditioned studios, all designed to provide a realistic working environment to students and the public.

What You’ll Learn You will be taught by our highly qualified enthusiastic staff. Your learning will cover a wide range of hairdressing skills which are required if you are considering building a career in the hairdressing industry. The course includes theory including some science related topics and practical training. There are 10 units of study which include:

• Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

Entry Requirements School leavers will have a good record of attendance, punctuality and a good report from school. You will need a Hairdressing Level 1 qualification, possess a genuine interest in hairdressing and have good dexterity skills/or equivalent experience. You will need motivation and enthusiasm for working with people and the general public and you will be committed to learning, training, and practising new skills.

How will I be Assessed? Practical skills will be assessed on paying clients, colleagues and friends in a realistic working environment. You will attend theory classes and this will be assessed by online testing and a completed log book.

Study Programme Overview

Entry Requirements

If you are looking to step onto the ladder of the exciting world of hairdressing then this course is for you! This one year course will help you to gain and develop the basic skills required to work in the hairdressing industry.

You will possess good dexterity skills and have a keen interest in hairdressing. Good references from a previous employer or college/ school, showing a positive record of attendance and punctuality, will be required.

It will introduce you to the discipline of a working environment and at the same time allow you to develop your artistic and creative ability. Training and studying with us will give you an opportunity to go as far as your talent will take you.

You must enjoy working with other people and be committed to learning, practising and participating in hairdressing training activities. Basic levels of English skills are required and you will be invited to attend a pre- course discussion.

This course covers a broad range of hairdressing skills and knowledge. It is taught by highly qualified and enthusiastic staff in realistic working environments at our Deane Road campus.

Following this you may be asked to complete a pre- course practical assessment.

What You’ll Learn

You will be assessed on a continual basis. Practical skills will be assessed on models, colleagues and friends in a realistic working environment.

The course consists of 11 units, of which four units are generic and mandatory and seven units are hairdressing specific. You will learn how to: shampoo and condition, cut, colour, perm, style and dress long and short hair, promote retail products and services, and design and create hairdressing images. You will also learn about client care, reception duties, the hairdressing industry, employment laws and the importance of health and safety at work. Elements of Study Your programme consists of the following elements: • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent) • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills) If required for your chosen HE course, you may wish to study English & maths to Level 3.

How will I be Assessed?

You will attend theory classes and this will be assessed by online testing, oral questions, short written assignments and log book completion.

Study Programme Overview

Entry Requirements

Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

We ask for two GCSEs at 4 or above (preferably one in English) and good attendance at school/college.

If you’re thinking about a career in the media and entertainment industry as a Hair Stylist and/or Make- up Artist, then this course could be for you. With the opportunity to showcase your excellent people skills, creative flair and professionalism in our Wella- accredited salon, you will gain the experience that you need in order to move on to a career in anything from fashion, to film and TV, to owning your own business. Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

What You’ll Learn

You will need creative flair and a keen interest in make-up and hair. You will also need to be a good team player with high motivation to work hard.

How will I be Assessed? You will be assessed via a broad range of methods: • Oral questions • Written end exam • Assignments • Practical work We will ask you to organise and build a portfolio of practical work to provide evidence of what you have learned.

Supporting Your Learning and Wellbeing

You will gain a wide range of skills in: • The Art of Applying Make-up • Creative Make-up Artistry • Hair Artistry – Hair-Up and Blowdrys Elements of Study Your programme consists of the following elements: • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent) • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

We want you to enjoy every minute of College, both in the classroom and out of it, so we have a range of dedicated support and wellbeing services. These include FREE travel; FREE breakfast; dedicated Learning Development Mentors; impartial advice and guidance; dedicated one-to-one support for learners with additional needs; and support with the cost of College, plus much more.

If required for your chosen HE course, you may wish to study English & maths to Level 3.

Future Opportunities

Gifted and Talented Programme

After you have completed the course you could remain in College and progress on to Hair & Media Make-up Level 3.

If you’re a potentially high-achieving learner, capable of exceeding your targets, we will stretch and challenge you by providing the opportunity for you to study additional qualifications, with support in place to complement your study programme experience.

Alternatively, if you choose to look for paid work you could take up a Hairdressing Apprenticeship and work as an Apprentice Hairdresser. Following further study you could work as: • A qualified Media Make-up Artist and earn between £12,000 and £19,000 a year, depending on experience. • An Image Consultant, earning between £14,000 and £40,000 a year. • A Salon Manager, earning between £18,000 and £30,000 a year.

Enrichment We want to give you a positive experience at College and a rounded view of the industry you could one day be working in. So, during your time at College, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities, including: • Meeting employers/industry experts • Opportunity to participate in local and national competitions • Visits to film and TV sets eg: Emmerdale and Media City • Visiting local businesses • Taking part in Showcase activities and relevant events

How will I be Assessed?

Our Apprenticeship programmes will give you vital hands-on experience, learning from real life situations, with the guidance of industry professionals. You’ll gain the skills and confidence needed to excel in your chosen career.

You’ll be assessed throughout your learning programme by a mixture of formal tests, workplace observations, portfolio building and self-assessment.

This Apprenticeship will enable you to gain the skills required to be a Hair Stylist and to work as an employee within a hairdressing salon.

We want you to enjoy every minute of College, both in the classroom and out of it, so we have a range of dedicated support and wellbeing services. These include FREE travel; FREE breakfast; your own dedicated Work Based Tutor; impartial advice and guidance; dedicated one-to-one support for learners with additional needs; and support with the cost of College, plus much more.

The course is a great way to build on your skills and gain a recognised qualification whilst also earning a salary.

What You’ll Learn

Supporting Your Learning and Wellbeing

The Apprenticeship consists of around 30 hours in a salon and one day in College per week. Mandatory units include: • Basic Cutting • Colouring • Styling • Hair-Up • Consultation • Plus Two Optional Units of Your Choice Functional Skills (if applicable): • English Level 1 • Maths Level 1 You will be trained and assessed in theory and practical skills, with the majority of training taking place ‘on the job’.

Entry Requirements A successful interview with a salon accepting a Level 2 Apprenticeship programme. A good level of maths and English, assessed via a College in-house assessment (BKSB). You will be required to attend College one day per week.

Apprenticeship Overview Our Apprenticeship programmes will give you vital hands-on experience, learning from real life situations, with the guidance of industry professionals. You’ll gain the skills and confidence needed to excel in your chosen career. This Apprenticeship will help you develop the skills required to be a Hair Stylist and to progress as an employee within a hairdressing salon. The course is a great way to build on advanced cut and colour skills and gain a recognised qualification whilst also earning a salary.

What You’ll Learn The Level 3 Apprenticeship is aimed at those who have already achieved a Level 2 in Hairdressing, or who can demonstrate, through formal qualifications or relevant experience, a level of knowledge equivalent to that covered by the Level 2. The Level 3 consists of:

Entry Requirements To complete an Apprenticeship you will need to have an employer who is willing to support you throughout your training. If you have not yet found one, we can help you with your search. We ask that you hold a Level 2 Hairdressing qualification or equivalent - students progress onto this course rather than apply straight from school.
