PERFORMING ARTS UAL (University of Arts London) Music, Performing & Production Arts Diploma Level 1

Study Programme Overview Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study. Ever wondered what it would be like to be on stage in front of an audience? If you are hard-working, committed and would like to discover your talents, this one-year course might be the place to start. This is a course for learners who are either new to dance or drama, or have gained some previous experience. This practical-based course is a great place to start, as it will give you an understanding of the performing arts industry and can help you on to the next stage of your education or help towards getting a job. Work experience is an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

What You’ll Learn You will form a theatre company, as a group. You will choose a name and design the logo. You will make decisions about the style of performance that you will develop and choose a target audience. You will spend most of your time in rehearsals and then will perform your work in the College theatre, as well as touring to other venues. You will have the opportunity to perform in regular theatre performances, as well as to create your own short film. You will also work together as a company to write, direct, rehearse and perform your own play.

There will be a strong emphasis on developing your employability skills, including teamwork, time-keeping, presentation, communication skills and developing confidence. These skills are crucial, whatever your chosen career path. If required for your chosen career or HE course, you may wish to study English and Maths to Level 3. Elements of Study Your programme consists of the following elements: • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • English and Maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE Grade 4 or equivalent) • Employability skills (eg. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial and personal development (eg. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

Entry Requirements To enter at Level 1, you do not need to have any formal qualifications, however, we would ask you to prepare an audition and attend an interview.

How will I be Assessed? There will be continuous assessment throughout the course. You’ll be assessed through your public performances, your written assignments and filmed discussions and presentations.

You will develop your skills in a wide range of areas, including: • Acting (live theatre) • Acting for the camera • A range of dance styles • Comedy performance • Masks • Film-making • Musical theatre

• Operating lighting and sound • Stage management • Marketing • Front of house and customer service

Study Programme Overview

Dance and Acting Pathway

Can you picture yourself on the stage, the screen or even behind the camera? If you are a creative and ambitious individual, our performing arts courses will help you to break into this competitive industry.

• Jazz Dance • Contemporary Dance • Urban Dance • Tap Dance

During this one-year course, you’ll have the opportunity to work towards the Level 3 Diploma in stages that will build and develop your skills. All the practical work will be leading towards public performances, either in the College theatre, or other venues around Bolton. Work experience is an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

What You’ll Learn You will explore and analyse what goes into becoming a professional performer or technician. There are 8eight units that you will study over the year with us, which will include practical and theoretical sessions, including: • Introduction to Performance/Production • Communicating with an Audience • Staging a Performance • Performance Skills and Practice • Producing and Performing to an Audience

• Dance and Drama Improvisation • Physical Theatre • Choreographing Dance • Musical Theatre

You will work towards a full-scale production towards the end of the year, which may include a contemporary theatre production, dance show, or a musical theatre production. Other projects throughout the year include, theatre for children, schools tour, TV and film project, site-specific project and directing and choreography projects. You will be given the opportunity to audition for our theatre and dance companies. These companies are run outside of class time and provide students with a range of performance opportunities and further training. Our partnership with the Octagon Theatre, and the University of Bolton provides students with an exciting range of enrichment and work experience opportunities, throughout the academic year. You will choose either the Acting pathway (with a strong emphasis on acting for camera, as well as live theatre) or our unique Dance and Acting pathway. If you would like to specialise in backstage work, you will be given relevant training and the opportunity to work on a range of shows. PERFORMING ARTS UAL (University of Arts London) Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts Level 3

Study Programme Overview On successful completion of the one-year UAL Diploma Level 3, you may progress onto the Extended Diploma Level 3. During this course, you will be considered to be a young professional and given opportunities to develop your artistic and leadership skills further. You will be expected to work independently at times, with guidance from tutors, to lead your own performance projects. This university-style course will effectively equip you will all of the skills needed to successfully progress onto Higher Education. Work experience is an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

What You’ll Learn You will study a further four units at Level 3 during this year:

If you would like to specialise in backstage work, you will be given relevant training and the opportunity to work on a range of shows. As an experienced student, you will take a lead role in all projects and will be given opportunities to direct or choreograph work. You will work on a full-scale production towards the end of the year, which may include a contemporary theatre production, dance show or musical theatre production. Other projects throughout the year include, theatre for children, schools tour, TV and film project, site-specific project, directing and choreography projects. You may direct or choreograph your own performance work, working with your peers. You may also develop your own performance work for camera, producing a short film. You will work alongside industry professionals on external performance projects in order to provide valuable experience of working in the Performing Arts industry.

You will be given the opportunity to audition for our theatre and dance companies. These companies are run outside of class time and provide students with a range of performance opportunities and further training.

You will also select a preferred performance pathway to specialise in. You will choose either:

Dance and Acting Pathway • Jazz Dance • Contemporary Dance • Urban Dance • Dance and Drama Improvisation • Physical Theatre • Choreographing Dance • Musical Theatre

Elements of Study • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme) • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent) • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work) • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life) • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills).

Entry Requirements You will need to have completed a one-year Diploma Level 3 (UAL or BTEC) with a Merit or Distinction Profile.
